Women, Success, and the Perception of Pretentiousness

What happens when you lose a parent at a young age? You grow up very quickly. Karen went from 5 to 25 overnight when her loving father mysteriously disappeared and was never found. She was a serious and focused kid and felt a sense of responsibility to her mother and 2 brothers.

At 19, her career in the music industry began in Atlanta, Georgia, when the mayor's wife took a liking to Karen and mentored her for many years. Karen worked with some of the most famous musicians in the world for over 40 years, think Prince and Dixie Chicks, to name a few. 

Her work was her life, and she didn't get married (and divorced) until later in life and, unfortunately, could never have children. She wonders what her life would have been like with her father, but also says she would not be who she is today without that tragic experience.

She kicked ass in her (almost thankless) career and did well for herself financially. She was able to create financial stability, buy herself 40 acres of land, and build her dream home to relax in and enjoy during her retirement years. After recording the podcast, she asked me if we should edit out the part where she talks about her successes because she was worried about sounding pretentious. "um, hell no!" I said, "You earned your money, home, & land, and you should not feel shameful."

Why is it that men don't feel embarrassed about their successes? It's quite the opposite. Generally speaking, men are proud of their work and speak highly of their positions and possessions, but women feel they can't talk out loud about these things for fear of being judged.

Ladies (and speaking to myself, too), be proud and acknowledge your awesomeness and successes without fear or embarrassment. We owe it to ourselves and the world at large.
