So I asked you this, what genreare you trying to play at your
organization? Here's the secret.
There are only really like fivechords that you need to play in
order to play most popularmusic. Just played almost all

music. The difference is how youplay those five chords matters.
Are you playing on like this?
Or like this?
So gotta ask yourself thisquestion. Who are you as an
(01:36):
artist, here's an issue. contextswitching is a problem. If your
organization is asking you toswitch from one genre to the
next, every few minutes, you aregoing to screw something up, you
will get tired. On average, ittakes people about 10 minutes to
get back into a productiveworkflow after being
interrupted, so you might beplaying a sweet solo. And then

some drunk asshole says play forUber. Sidenote, if you are a
musician, you do have to learnhow to play Freebird. Or you
will get beat up at the bar. Somake sure that you know how to
play Freebird. But the point is,you can't do it all. You can't
play every single genre foreverybody. You have to find the

right genre for you. And youhave to find the right band
members to play that genre withyou, sidenote, always find the
drummer they are the hardest tofind. Once you find your band,
now you've got to deal withstage fright. Trying to achieve
social performance isexhausting. But guess what,
that's what HR does every singlefreaking day. We are onstage

acting. Here's the trick. Youcan't fake it. You have to be
authentic and you have to betrue even when it hurts. If you
are constantly acting over andover and over again, it's
exhausting. You will burnyourself out how many articles
that we read lately about HRfatigue. The problem is human
behavior. When you constantlyconsider your actions, you screw

up, you have to learn how toplay your own music, or people
will tell that you are notplaying the genre that you
should shouldn't be playing.
Here's a quote I love. If youtell the truth. You don't have
to remember anything. That's aMark Twain quote. And that's
what we should all be strivingto do. If we are faking it, we
will fail. Eventually, when Istarted my career, I thought I

had to play everything in Cmajor. Because it's pretty and
it's right and it's like thatthat corporate headshot with the
shiny photo that everybodywants. But the truth is that I
should be playing a C minorthat's just me. That's who I am.
So ask yourself this. How areyou doing? Are you playing the

blues on a Sunday? Because thatsucks. If you've got the Sunday
scaries if you dread going intowork, guess what? You're
probably playing the wronggenre. So do you need a bridge?
A bridge is a contrastingsection and music that gets
people to go back to the returnto the original material. Is it
time for you to go back to youroriginal material? Ask yourself

that. Here's the thing. We canmake a difference in HR. If we
are our authentic selves. Oh bythe way, close it out on a
badass power cord. lasting mark.
