The greatest power we have is the choice to shift our perception. Before we discover Soul Recovery, so many of us live in a constant loop of “why is this happening to me?”, feeling like victims of our circumstances — whether it’s our family, our health, or the state of the world.

In this heartfelt episode, I share how my own journey taught me that while we’re powerless over what happens outside of us, we hold absolute authority over how we respond inside ourselves. This is sovereignty — not denial or spiritual bypassing, but a profound remembering of our divine nature and a commitment to see life through the eyes of love. Together, we explore how to stop feeding fear, how to meet challenges — including health struggles — with compassion and practical action, and how to stand firm in our wholeness no matter what storms rage around us.

Soul Recovery invites us to witness our responses without judgment, release old patterns and beliefs, deepen our connection to something greater still, and live from the sanctuary of our heart. From this space, we’re “in the world but not of it” — participating fully in our human experience while rooted in a higher perception that keeps us centered, peaceful, and empowered. You are not alone — you are not a victim — and your inner power is waiting to be awakened.

Rev Rachel Harrison (00:00):
Before we stepped into our soul recovery,
we may have believed that wewere victims of the world that
we see, that we were victims ofour circumstance.
We were victims of our past.
We were victims of what ishappening around us and the
people in our lives.
But in soul recovery we'velearned a new way that, although

(00:20):
we are powerless overeverything outside of ourself
which is giving us freedom wecan be sovereign in our own
experience and how we choose tosee it, how we choose to be
present in our life, theconsciousness that we hold to
see our lives, to create ourlives, to speak into our lives,

(00:41):
what we want to attract and callto ourselves.
This episode is about how to beconnected to that sovereign
state.
Enjoy the episode.
Welcome to the Recover yourSoul podcast a spiritual path to
a happy and healthy life.
My name is Reverend RachelHarrison.
I started Recover your Soulafter having profound changes in

(01:04):
my life from my recovery ofalcoholism, codependency and
control addiction.
I was guided to share the toolsand principles of spirituality
and soul recovery to help otherstransform their lives as mine
was transformed.
For us to overcome externalcircumstances, we need to turn
the attention to ourselves, focusing on our inner change and

(01:26):
healing, positive results inour lives will follow.
Welcome to Recover your Soul.
I'm Rev Rachel.
Thank you so much for choosingin into your soul recovery with
me.
Thank you for being part ofthis amazing community.
I'm just so honored andprivileged to be here with you

(01:47):
as we're all learning how totake our power back, how to
really step into our spiritualpractice.
Soul Recovery is a spiritualpath to a happy and healthy life
, and spirituality can bewhatever it is for you.
I'm not here to dictate whatthat looks like for you.
I'm here to open the windowjust a crack for you to be able

(02:08):
to explore that for yourself.
I definitely have a heavymetaphysical lean as a
metaphysical minister and I dobelieve that there is a ultimate
fundamental truth that focuseson love and light and kindness
and compassion, and that there'sa lot of complexity in being
human and being here with otherson this wild ride of earth

(02:32):
school, as I like to call it.
And for this episode today, Iwanted to really lean in more
about what we talked about lastweek, which is we get to choose
the world in which we see, bythe thoughts and the words that
we use, that we can actuallywork on what we want our lives

(02:53):
to be like and will look likeand feel like, based on what we
choose in how we see it.
The power of our thoughts andthe power of our voice.
The power of our thoughts andthe power of our voice, and one
of the things that I wanted touse in this episode as a
catalyst is on Spotify, you canleave comments on the episodes,
which is cool, and one of thecommunity members said I loved

(03:16):
this episode.
Can you talk more about how soulrecovery works with medical
issues and that it's hard tostay positive?
It's interesting because I'dalready wanted to talk about
this concept that we're going tomove into, which is this belief
sometimes that we think thatwe're victims to our
circumstance, that we're victimsto the people in our lives or

(03:39):
to what's happening to us, andwe use the terminology in soul
recovery about taking our powerback, because we tend to put a
lot of energy on what'shappening outside of ourselves
as being the dictate whetherwe're okay or not.
This was a huge piece of mylife because when my kids were

(03:59):
in their crazy years and we allgo through crazy years, right so
I think this is the really bigpiece of really understanding
the different chapters.
We are in our experience thatthere will be chapters in your
life that are complicated, andwhen I was in that chapter, with
Alex being in his reallycomplex place that he was with

(04:20):
drugs and alcohol and all of thethings that were happening with
him and his dad and Bodhi wasin his own experience that he
went through, which is alsousing drugs and having issues
when he was younger as well, andthe family dynamics that we're
in and Rich and I werealcoholics and we were drinking
and had moments of sobriety butreally we were still not having

(04:43):
done the deep work of healingand I'm just trying so
desperately to hold on to all ofit.
I felt pretty victimized by mylife and I often tell the story
about how, when I heard somebodysay you're only as happy as
your least happy child, thatthat made so much sense to me
because I wasn't very happy,because I had these extenuating

(05:06):
circumstances that were verycomplicated and, like most of
you that are here, I had part ofme that really felt like it was
my job to be on top of it, tofix it, to take care of it.
That was my codependent peoplepleaser in me and I felt like I
was a victim to my circumstance.
I felt like my husband.
If he did something different,if he could just show up in a

(05:28):
different way, if he could justbe somebody else, if he could be
what I wanted, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah right, then it
would be different.
And I was constantly in thisvictim mentality of life is
happening to me.
This is another thing happeningto me.
Why is this happening to me?
And as I've gotten more clarityaround the spiritual journey

(05:52):
and the spiritual path and morespace to begin to see things
from a different perspective andto have that clarity like we
talked about last episode thatour thoughts are so powerful and
our words that we use are sopowerful that I can actually see

(06:12):
more clearly about how I wasclaiming myself as a victim and
it was showing up to me andproviding me more evidence of
such.
Brene Brown is famous for sayingthat you're going to go out in
the world and you're going tofind what you're looking for.
If you're looking for the worldto show you that you are

(06:33):
belonging and that you areenough, you will get evidence of
that.
If you're looking for the worldto show you that you don't
belong and that you aren'tenough.
Guess what?
You're going to get more ofthat, and I think this is the
piece of metaphysics andspirituality that is so profound
.
As I deepen my spiritualpractice, the teachings all come
back and say the power of yourinternal dialogue that you have

(06:59):
with yourself is so much morecompelling than you know, has so
much more power behind it thanyou know.
So when we take our power backand we stop saying that
everything on the outside if itwas different, then I would be
okay you connect to your truenature, which is a magnificent,

(07:24):
perfect child of the universe.
You were brought here onpurpose.
No matter where you are on thespiritual or religious spectrum,
we are all of the same body andmind to really reflect this
truth that we are divine beings.
If you're a Christian, we aremade in the likeness of God

(07:46):
himself, and if you'remetaphysical, we are the essence
of the universe, we are thecreation of the universe.
So, wherever you are in thatspectrum, look at how we're all
being offered this knowledgethat we are part of something
even greater still.
And we don't give ourselvescredit for that, because we

(08:08):
think that we are somehow beinginflicted with suffering, with
pain, with all kinds ofsituations that are happening to
us.

Back to the episode as I'mrecording this, it is June 14,
which is a big day.
I have the meditation that isgoing to be live streamed later
this afternoon and I'm veryaware of the energy that's

(09:33):
happening around us in terms ofour politics.
There's so much going on in theworld and then I was going
through Facebook quickly andthere's the now Iran and Israel
are fighting and there areprotests and violence in many,
many, many countries.
It feels like the world's onfire and on some levels,

(09:57):
emotionally, it is because we'rechanging so much.
We're so full of thisincredible shift in our
consciousness, and I'm not goingto get into politics and I very
important to me to not getinvolved in the storylines of
all the things but what I wantus to really understand is that

(10:20):
it's really a macrocosm of themicrocosm that is our own lives
outside of ourselves, and howthat is such a fearful place.
And so then we go back to I'monly as happy as my country is.
I'm only as happy as who myfamily members are.

(10:41):
I'm only as happy as whateverthe health is of my own body or
of the people around me and thehealth of their bodies.
And we recognize that we'reconstantly giving that power
away to forget that actually youhave the ability to be present
within yourself in a way thatyou have sovereignty.

(11:02):
Sovereignty means that you'renot giving anything or anyone
else the control over how youare internally, how you feel
internally, what you thinkinternally.
We've spent our lifetimeschecking in with everything and
everyone about what's going onwith us.
So as I contemplate what'shappening out in the world, I've

(11:25):
dug in even deeper into myspiritual practice, not to put
my head in the sand, not topretend like nothing is
happening, but to remember thatthe power that we have is to
stay present and awake in ourown consciousness and our own
choice of how we choose to seeit.
And I choose to see that, regardless of what's happening,

(11:46):
there is an element of awarenessand awakeness and that I can
choose to see with the eyes oflove.
And just moving into theconcepts and the words that were
used, I remember a long timeago or maybe some people still
do it now.
You know the what would Jesusdo, and people had wristbands

(12:06):
that said what would Jesus do orthe initials for that.
And it was this real moment, Ithink in time, where people were
saying you know, if I wasactually to look through the
eyes of Christ, if I was able tolook with that Christ
consciousness, what would thatlook like?
And that's a really beautifulplace to start.
So if those terminologies workfor you and that's something

(12:29):
that resonates with you, usethat.
If you're like me and you'remetaphysical, then I look
through the eyes.
I actually look through Christconsciousness eyes, because
that's important to me, but Ilook through the eyes of the
masters that have come andwalked before us, who've been
able to see above and beyondwhat feels and is very complex

(12:54):
and dense here on the ground.
And it's never about denyingthat there are real, real things
happening that are complicated, because I think that if we
dismiss that and we try to gostraight to that spiritual place
where you're like, oh, justpretend, like everything's okay
and have a higher thought, that's not it at all.
I think that when we reallylook at what it means to be

(13:18):
human beings here, if we aredivine, if we are here to have
this experience, regardless ofwhat your spiritual belief or
practice, of what it is, if youstep up and you wouldn't be here
and you wouldn't be listeningthis far in if you didn't
already have some of thesethoughts right that there's so

(13:39):
much more to who you are and andto who everyone else is, and
that we're noticing more andmore and more that those wisdom
teachers that came, thosemasters that came, regardless of
who they are for you all taughtabout love and compassion and
oneness and peace and tendernessto others.

(14:00):
That at the essence and thecore of all of those teachings
is a foundation of love and ofenergy, of consciousness.
And so when I look at thisquestion that says I've been
diagnosed with something, how doI move actually in the soul
recovery, into not moving intofear?

(14:23):
It is the same as the questionof this particular situation is
happening in my family.
Maybe you have a kid who'sstruggling with addiction.
Maybe you're looking at theworld and you're feeling like
everything's falling apart.
You really recognize that thereis some level of what is the
experience on the outside andhow it wants to affect what's on

(14:44):
the inside.
And my hope is that soulrecovery is giving us a process
to be able to witness and noticein step one.
You're witnessing and noticingthat ready for awakening moment
where you're like, ooh, this, this is hard, this doesn't feel
good.
Well, if you have a medicalissue, you can use this to
actually bump up against it andsay I'm fearful, I think that

(15:09):
something wrong with me, I don'tknow how to handle it, and it
actually gives you informationabout patterns, beliefs and
stories that are inside, usuallyabout our feeling like a victim
, right that something'shappening to us.
Why is this happening to me?
How can this be happening to me?
And underneath that is often abelief or a story that we have

(15:34):
for ourselves that we can'thandle it, or that we brought it
on to ourselves or that it'sgoing to make our lives
miserable.
And then step two in soulrecovery is admitting that we're
powerless over every singlething outside of ourself,

(15:57):
outside of ourself.
So if you have a medicalsituation, you can remember that
you're powerless over so manythings.
Right, you're powerless over,maybe, other people's reactions
to you.
You might be powerless overwhat your doctors are offering
or saying that might not alignwith what you're thinking.
You're powerless over some ofthe circumstances that bring on
some things.

(16:18):
There's definite belief inspirituality that there's a
marriage, like a workingtogether in a way, of who we are
spiritually and how clean ourenergy is to be in our most
healed and clear state, to makesure that whatever toxins or

(16:40):
situations that are happeningwith your body are cleared out.
And then there's also the piecethat you're just a body and it
has problems.
It's like asking a car to neverhave any issues.
You can change the oil in yourcar and take great care of it.
Eventually it's going to needsome things to be fixed.
Your body's wear out, there'sgenetics, there's all kinds of
things that are at play, and youcan admit that you're powerless

(17:01):
over whatever the genetics arethat you came in with, that you
might be predisposed tosomething.
But when you start looking at itfrom a spiritual perspective,
what you're doing is you'retaking out the part that says
I'm a victim of, and yourecognize and you remember that
you can connect to somethinggreater still, which is step

(17:23):
four in soul recovery, that deepconnection to your higher power
that gives you the strength tobe able to handle whatever's
coming.
Then, when you look at stepthree in soul recovery, which is
, you know what are theselimiting beliefs, what are these
underlying patterns and stories?
So often they're layered withunworthiness or that victim

(17:45):
mentality again that, like this, always happens to me, or I
can't handle it, or there's noone there for me.
Those are stories that we tellourselves.
Those are stories that we tellourselves.
Those are stories that we tellourselves that everything's
overwhelming, that it has to belike this for me to be safe.
Those are those patterns andbeliefs that are in our
subconscious that are keeping usfrom moving into that

(18:08):
connection to source.
All the spiritual stuff that Iread and hear reminds us that
there is so much more availableto all of us that if we trust in
this universal, creative cosmicforce of light and energy and

(18:31):
just unlimited nature, that weactually move into the quantum.
I love that there's so muchmore information about the
quantum.
We actually can move into apretty wild space that says I
get to choose how I'm going tosee it.
And when I look at the worldright now, the way I choose to
see it is yes, it is verycomplicated, yes, it is very

(18:54):
painful.
There are definitely thingshappening in people's lives that
are affecting people in veryreal world ways and at the same
time, if I look at it from theeyes of love, even Jesus had to
come and turn the tables.
He turned the tables to saythis isn't working.

(19:16):
So are we as a human species, onsome level turning the tables
to be able to raise into ahigher consciousness, to be able
to see that there is unity, that we're awakening on some
level, to recognize that there'sso much more to be seen in all
of us and to remember that, nomatter what anybody thinks on

(19:41):
either side, no matter whatanyone thinks on either side, at
the foundation of who we are,we are these incredible souls
who are connected, incrediblesouls who are connected.
And if we can come into thatunity space, that place of
really recognizing theconnections, and that the

(20:02):
thoughts and the feelings andthe beliefs that we have have so
much power that we can chooselove, that we can choose to see
through those eyes of love, through that Christ
consciousness, through the eyesof the Creator, through that
Christ consciousness, throughthe eyes of the creator, I find
myself.
The channel, clearly, is comingback to Jesus, and however you
see Jesus, see him, however yousee him, but as a historical

(20:25):
figure or as a spiritual figure.
This is somebody who came andreminded us that this isn't
about caste.
It was about looking at peoplewho were of every race, of every
gender, of every socioeconomicclass, and those were his

(20:48):
disciples, those were his people.
And he also reminded us thatyou are able to heal yourself,
that it was through the beliefin something greater still that
offered the healing, that he wasjust a mirror for people to
heal.
And that's where we are rightnow in a society.

(21:11):
I think that if we really lookat this, we are not victims,
that we take our power back andyou start just observing what is
, and in that I can recognizeand see that so many people are
so affected by fear and fear.
Of course they are, there'sreason for it.

(21:32):
But then we stand in our soulrecovery space and we think I
actually get to decide how thisis going to reflect to me.
How am I going to show up forthis?
What am I going to do about it?
Can I connect to my higher self?
Can I connect to the innersanctuary of my heart, where we
move into a space where thatheart, consciousness, it

(21:54):
radiates out an energy that isvery different than our mind and
our intellect.
It's completely connected toyour higher self.
There is almost always a spacefor compassion and forgiveness
and grace when you're in yourheart, and it doesn't mean that
you don't take action in yourlife if you have an illness or

(22:17):
if somebody in your life isstruggling or if you see some
place that needs to have change.
It isn't about laying down andjust saying, well, we're just
going to let everything just be.
That's not what the spiritualteachings say.
What the spiritual teachingsare saying is that you're not a
victim, which means that youhave sovereignty over how you
are showing up and you stophaving the outside world dictate

(22:42):
whether you're okay or not.
And when you do that and youstay in your heart and you see
through the eyes of spirit, youcan show up in ways that are
strong, that have voice, thathave action.
If you have a medical procedure, you go into those situations,
you ask the kind of questionswhere you really make sure that

(23:03):
you're getting the questionsthat you want answered and that
you feel like you havesovereignty over your own
medical situation.
And then you remember that yourmind has power and that if you
think from fear, then you'reactually feeding whatever that
situation is medically fear.
But if you feed it love andlight and healing and you ask

(23:24):
questions on a metaphysicalperspective, there's a whole
other side.
Like I talked with ChristineLang in Ask your Spirit, who's a
medical intuitive, like Italked with Christine Lang in
Ask your Spirit, who's a medicalintuitive, and she talks about
how medical issues often aregiving us information and when
we listen to that informationand we take in what that is
offering our soul to learn aboutourselves.

(23:46):
Then, whatever the healing is,it becomes part of the healing.
It can have a better resolvefrom that place.
Instead of thinking that you'resick or there's something wrong
with you, in soul recovery we'reremembering there's nothing
wrong with us anyway.
We're remembering our wholenessin everything.
We're coming back to our heartin everything and more and more

(24:11):
and more.
As complicated as life is, Isee the beauty in all of it and
I know that this is hard whenyou have difficulty knocking at
your door or feels like it'srunning over you.
And in those moments, the moreyou can just be in touch with
what you actually feel, thedepth of the feeling that's

(24:33):
within you that might haveheartbreak or despair or courage
or frustration or love orexcitement, whatever those
feelings are, to allow yourselfto let those feelings wash
through you, because that is thevalue and the power of the

(24:53):
human experience.
But as spiritual beings we wantto be able to be in the body
and also not of the world at thesame time.
Sometimes in spirituality theysay to be in the world but not
of the world.
In spirituality they say to bein the world but not of the

(25:18):
world.
And the teachings in the Bibleand the New Testament are the
kingdom of heaven is within you.
That this concept of being avictim means that you are
choosing to not allow yourselfto feel that power, that that
wholeness, that ability tohandle and do difficult things
is the incredible innate beingof who you are.

(25:39):
And that we can choose love inevery action, in every word, in
every situation.
And remember that, whatever isgoing on either with you or with
the world around us, we are notvictims of the world that we
see, that we get to choose howwe're going to interact with it.

(26:00):
And sometimes there's littlebaby miracles that happen and
sometimes there's big miraclesthat happen.
Staying in gratitude that, regardless of what the situation
may look or feel like in thatmoment, that there is something
more to learn and understand init and that you can connect to

(26:20):
something greater still andthere is an opportunity for you
to remember the strength of whoyou are, to heal in everything.
And that, when you stand inthat clear space within yourself
and that, when you stand inthat clear space within yourself
, from your higher self, reallybeing able to look and feel that
, knowing that you're connectedfrom your heart space, the

(26:41):
sanctuary of your heart thatthere's a capacity to radiate
out love that reaches in waysthat no action can ever take.
We do not have to fixeverything around us.
We can't fix everything aroundus.

(27:06):
We're powerless over that.
And these are the steps in soulrecovery where we're releasing
what doesn't serve us.
Step five and step six is movinginto the truth of who we are,
recognizing the incredible giftof who we are and these new
beliefs, these new ways of being, where you understand that
sovereignty that you have.
And, yes, it's scary to be in amedical situation, but you

(27:29):
don't have to live in the fearof it.
You can use it as a challengeto get through and to teach you
something about yourself and toremember how strong you are.
And as a society, we canremember that we are one,
regardless of any of the beliefsthat everybody has, and that we
can always choose love andunion and connection, and that

(27:52):
we can trust and know that weare being guided and held into
new ways of being that arearound light and compassion and
tenderness to each other, andthat it will be complicated it
has never been withoutcomplications to be human beings
but we're here at a veryspecific, powerful time.

(28:13):
That is around an awakening, anawakening of ourselves, an
awakening of our world, and ifwe can hold the space of knowing
and I almost used the word hope, but the guidance came through
and said hope is not the word touse, because hope has a vision

(28:35):
of what we think it should looklike.
But knowing and faith is beyondthat, because it gives us a
space to move past our limitedview and to see beyond that into
a place of faith and trust.
And a trust is that you.

(28:57):
You need to be part of thehealing.
It is your mission, it's yoursoul's purpose, on whatever way
it is large or small, to release, deeply release, all of this
dense shackles of beliefs andpain that you've been holding on

(29:20):
to.
That is being really like, ohGod, I'm seeing this vision of
just this shattering of allthese old beliefs and all these
old stories as if they were real, and it's as if the view in
which you had seen the worldcould only be through your

(29:42):
limited perceptions of yourself.
And it's being shattered andit's opening up a view that is
so bright and so beautiful andyet, at the same time, I think,
if you're like me, I want somuch for everything, just to
clear and for it all just to beperfect without hardship.
Of course I do, and youprobably feel the same way that

(30:05):
we could all just open this partof our heart and that then
everything would be okay.
Then everything would be okay.
But that being okay issomething that's on the inside,
not always what we see on theoutside, and that is where that

(30:26):
power of we are not victims ofthe world that we see and we get
to choose how we are going tosee it, and we choose to see it
through the eyes of love.
We choose compassion, we choosepeace, we choose healing, we
choose faith, we choose love.

(30:55):
Be mindful of what you'rebringing in, what you're seeing,
what you're paying attention to, because that sovereignty means
that you only allow in what isbenefiting you for your higher
self and your higherconsciousness.
And so there is such a part ofus that, like wants to stay
abreast.
But be mindful of what you'reputting into yourself and how

(31:15):
much you have the news onconstantly, or scanning things
that are giving you theinformation.
We're powerless over all thosethings.
We are not putting our head inthe sand.
You're not putting your head inthe sand about what's happening
on a big scale with your familyand then personally with you.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
