Meet James Troup: President and Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Rehabilitation Center (GRC)

Recovery sticks when care meets real life, not the other way around. That’s the spirit behind our conversation with James Troup, CEO of GRC, who walks us through how a 50-year legacy provider rebuilt itself into an advanced recovery network focused on mind, body, and spirit. We explore what makes their model different—individualized, evidence-based treatment paired with family programming, 16 locations across southwestern Pennsylvania, and statewide telehealth that removes distance as a barrier to care.

James shares how GRC wraps services around each person’s needs, from co-occurring mental health support to medical care and practical resources, and how they keep people engaged after discharge through an app and consistent check-ins. We dig into the power of relationship-driven outreach with hospitals, employers, and schools, which turns referrals into trusted bridges for those ready for help. Along the way, we hear the community’s voice: the stories people share when they spot a GRC logo and talk about a brother, cousin, or friend whose life changed because someone made treatment feel safe and close.

We also highlight an unexpected edge: a boxing academy that weaves physical activity into recovery. It’s not a gimmick—it’s a structured, coached practice that helps reduce stress, build discipline, and create wins people can feel in their bodies. When staff jump in for workouts, it models healthy coping and narrows the gap between provider and patient. The result is a network that stays connected across settings and seasons, proving that holistic care can be both compassionate and operationally strong.

If this conversation resonates, share it with someone who needs a path forward, subscribe for more grounded stories and tools, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. One day longer, one day stronger.

SPEAKER_00 (01:22):
So, yeah, so uh James Troop, I'm the CEO of
Gateway Rehab Center.
Um, we now had recentlyrebranded as GRC, and that's in
response to our um advancedrecovery network that we've
built here.
We're really committed to uhproviding the community whatever
the needs of the community are.
So, in order to do that, we'veexpanded our mission quite
drastically over the last uhlast five years.

(01:44):
That's how long I've been here.
I've been here five years.
Uh prior to that, I worked forAllegheny Health Network and I
did some uh private practicestuff with pediatrics with this,
but this uh the mission, thegateway here of helping people
get back on track and and umhaving helping them heal.
And you know, our mission hereis to help everyone affected by
addictive disorders and and therecovery that we're looking for

(02:06):
and and providing is in mind, body, and spirit.
You know, it's not just um onearea that we're focused on.
We're focused on a multiplute ofdifferent uh as aspects to
recovery.

SPEAKER_02 (02:18):
Absolutely.
What makes GRC unique?

SPEAKER_00 (02:22):
Well, it's the advanced recovery network we
built.
You know, we we basically haveresponded to what the community
needs, but also when we admit apatient, they have multitudes of
needs, whether it's physicalhealth, mental health, and
obviously our mission to dealwith addictive disorders is is
primary.
But their patients bring a lotof different um issues to our
our centers and our outpatientclinics, and we've really

(02:43):
focused on having this advancedrecovery network where we're
able to wrap services aroundthem while they're in our
treatment and care.
And then even after theirdischarge, they can stay engaged
with us through a multitude ofthings of connecting through our
app and and just checking inwith us periodically so we
continue to help them with theirjourney for recovery.

SPEAKER_02 (03:03):
As we know that marketing is the heart of any
business, how are you getting toyour target market right now?

SPEAKER_00 (03:10):
So we really market through the community, through
relationships.
We work with hospitals, otherproviders in the area.
We work with employers.
Um, everyone's uh dealing withthis disease of addiction in
every aspect of life.
Um, you know, there's no one umwho hasn't been impacted by this
disease.
So we reach out to a lot ofthose folks that are are are
seeing people, meaningemployers, hospitals, um,

(03:34):
schools, you know, all theinstitutions that are in our
community, those are greatreferral sources for us.

SPEAKER_02 (03:41):
So when you're not busy running your business,
James, what do you like to dofor fun?

SPEAKER_00 (03:46):
So I'm actually a firefighter as also.
I've tonight I have a we'rewe're working to the fire
department.
Um my son and I like to hunt andfish and be outside, and he's
really into sports.
So he plays basketball andfootball, so that keeps me
pretty busy as well.
And my daughter's in college, souh do a lot of family stuff, you
know.
I really enjoy that.

SPEAKER_02 (04:05):
Yeah, sounds like they keep you moving.
Yeah, so you're a very busyperson.
So, in your own words, why areyou doing this?

SPEAKER_00 (04:12):
Um, I just love the that I'm a business background.
I love the fact that we're inthe business of helping people
and you see the results.
Um, you know, we have a whole uhwe have a we have a marketplace
where where our employees areable to buy our logoed shirts.
And if you wear one in thecommunity, someone's gonna say
something to you like, mybrother went through gateway, my
cousin, and it changed ourlives.

(04:34):
So it's really rewarding to hearthat in the community.
Since we've been around over 50years, we've had an impact, and
this organization has had animpact on a lot of people.
Um I I'm I'm everywhere you go.
If you wear one of our logoshirts, someone's gonna come up
to you and say, you know, they're gonna feel safe enough
to approach you and say one ofmy family members or a friend
had gone through gateway.

SPEAKER_02 (04:54):
What a special legacy that you're building here
in the community.
And James, one last question.
Give me one hot take for thisweek.

SPEAKER_00 (05:04):
Yeah, so we have a boxing academy here, and I I
like boxing a lot.
So I've been involved in boxinga long time.
I go over and work out thepatients periodically.
After this, I'm going to dothat.
So um I saw them all going intoour with our boxing uh coach.
Um, so it's real exciting thatwe have this boxing academy to
help people uh in the recoveryprocess, um, you know, just with
some physical activity.

(05:25):
You know, like I said, this isuh there are many different ways
to to recover, and it's nice toadd more healthy type activities
uh to their daily regimen.
Um and I they really enjoy itand they always like when I stop
over and work out with them.

SPEAKER_02 (05:39):
Yeah, I love that holistic approach to kind of
blow off some steam and getactive.
