Welcome to The Real Turf TextPodcast, episode 1 43.
(01:10):
Today we're talking to TylerMaje, equipment Manager at
Harmony Club in Fort Collins,Colorado.
Harmony Club is a private 18hole championship course.
Tyler has zero to two techs inthe shop, depending on the
season.
He's mostly John Deere, but ismoving to Toro.
He has Foley grinders.
(01:31):
Let's talk to Tyler.
welcome Tyler to the Real TurfText podcast.
It just got real, didn't it,Tyler?
Tyler Miget (01:38):
Hey, Dan.
Yeah.
What's up Trent?
How are you, man?
Trent Manning (01:41):
Yeah, I'm doing
good.
I'm doing good.
Thank you for scheduling this onverification day.
Tyler Miget (01:46):
Oh, man.
Trent Manning (01:47):
job pre-planning
there.
Tyler Miget (01:50):
Could have did not,
but you know what?
I I'm really good at learningthe hard way, so at least I'm
good at learning
Trent Manning (01:58):
you but you
checked your wife's schedule and
that's the most important thing.
We all know that.
Tyler Miget (02:03):
because I've
learned the hard way.
Trent Manning (02:05):
Yeah.
Okay, great.
That's awesome.
Yep.
Good answer.
Tell us how you got into theturf industry.
Tyler Miget (02:15):
Oh man.
It's kind of a funny roundaboutway.
I well, let's see.
So I don't know how muchbackstory you want, but I I got
hired on at mute.
Trent Manning (02:25):
we got an hour
here, so
Tyler Miget (02:27):
Alright, sweet.
Cool.
Perfect.
Well, let's see.
So I I kind of grew up, youknow, turning wrenches and
stuff.
My grandfather worked for GMTruck and Coach for 35 years or
so.
And I mean, nearly every memoryof like fixing something I was
like by his side, you know, inthe house or in a car you know,
(02:48):
tearing down a three 50 Chevyand a boat in the front yard.
Oh, yeah.
I can't remember how old it was,but yeah he towed a boat back
from Florida for my dad.
And yeah, the they said themechanic said the block was
cracked and he didn't believehim, so we tore it down in the
driveway.
But sorry.
No it wasn't, no.
(03:10):
Yeah.
Yeah man.
So we I just started turningwrenches with him and then in
high school I started bustingfires, at a place from uncle.
And after I went to college, Icame back and you know, did
didn't finish college but cameback and, you know, started
turning wrenches at his shopthrough pretty serendipitous,
scenario where I got to learnfrom the a SC Master Tech and
(03:33):
basically be an apprenticewithout, you know, a formal like
program or anything.
And really fell in love with it.
Did that for, you know, a numberof years and really fell in love
with it.
And also at that time I wasvolunteering for a nonprofit and
an opportunity came along that Icould go on staff with that
nonprofit.
So I did, and I wound up justkind of making space for myself
(03:56):
in the nonprofit.
And did that for probably 10years.
So we worked with middleschoolers and high schoolers in
particular, and then collegestudent students with
disabilities and teen moms.
It's pretty sweet.
And then yeah, man.
Trent Manning (04:06):
you doing with
them?
Tyler Miget (04:08):
Oh, well.
So I worked my way up from avolunteer leader and you know,
just had some opportunities andsome relationships and I wound
up planting I guess a couplefranchises as the best way to,
that you could think of them ata few different schools.
And then, and then and thenwound up planting several in
another town Loveland, Coloradoexcuse me.
(04:29):
And yeah, during that whole timeI was coaching, football,
wrestling, and track and field, the middle school level.
So, I'll allude or I guess I'llmention it later, but my
Instagram handle is Coach Mja.
But yeah, that's just how, youknow, hundreds and hundreds of
people know me as Coach Mja andor coach mostly.
But yeah.
so anyways, when it, when, youknow, when my wife and I felt
(04:50):
that it was kind of time to hangthat up.
We I went off and started my ownhandyman business and did that
for a few years.
It was a side hustle first, andthen it just, we made it the
full-time gig.
And, and then so Lauren and I gooff on a kind of goals and
vision retreat with each otherevery year.
And one year we just decidedthat it was gonna make the most
sense for our family, that I gota, went back and got a W2 job
(05:13):
and you know, for some of thegoals and stuff that we had.
And honestly, Trent, I was justlike, I was applying for random
jobs.
I had picked up golf a few yearsprior and found a my mom worked
for, worked for the governmentfor a long time.
And so I was just looking on thegovernment websites around where
we lived and, the town justSouthwest is Loveland.
(05:35):
We live in Fort Collins.
And that, you know, they had a agolf mechanic position that was
open.
So I applied for it and youknow, I had no idea about, you
know, grinding reels or bedknives.
I remember, you know, fillingout the application going like,
why machine brake rotors?
You know, like, how hard couldthis be?
Trent Manning (05:54):
Right, right.
Tyler Miget (05:55):
you know, and and
yeah I remember talking with
with the guy that hired me, mymy boss there, Dennis just a
legend.
So he he took a gamble on me andI couldn't be more grateful to
have fallen into this professionand it's so awesome.
Like, who knew, you know, guidance counselors don't know
about it, I'm sure, but yeah,it's.
It's been a blast.
(06:15):
So, that's how I got into it.
And then was there for aboutthree years.
And it's called the Old courseat Loveland.
So we were an 18 hole facility, and then we had across the
street a nine hole par three, like a true par three course,
not just a pitch and putt calledCattail Creek that we took care
of.
And then a snag course, I don'tknow if you've heard of that,
but it's called Starting New atGolf.
(06:36):
So yeah, it's just, it's bigoversized clubs.
It's basically you could go fromnever having swung the club as a
kid, you know, all the waythrough at the facility I was at
all the way through to playing achampionship course where you
know, we would host some prettysweet tournaments and then had
an opportunity to move over hereto Harmony Club and and I took
(06:57):
it.
So yeah, really?
Yeah, really stoked.
Trent Manning (07:01):
I don't, yeah.
What's like what really hookedyou in to golf?
What'd you enjoy most aboutworking
Tyler Miget (07:08):
The sport or
Trent Manning (07:09):
No on golf
equipment.
Tyler Miget (07:12):
oh, man.
I think it's a real fun I thinkit's a real fun marriage
between, you know, the big Idon't know, what am I trying to
say?
There's enough kind of bruteforce, you know, busting the
tractor tire by hand and, youknow, kind of, having to do
stuff like that.
And like the fact that we canget so nerdy and precise on
(07:34):
grinding bed bars within like ahalf 1,007 an inch to make sure
that our bed knives, you know, like, I've got a tab open on my
computer, you know, I'm readingthe Holy Bible of Mike Rollins.
Trent Manning (07:45):
Oh, nice.
Yep.
Yep.
Tyler Miget (07:46):
Carolina, this gang
I didn't get to make it to his
class'cause we had some Melrosestuff at the, at at the CTS.
But yeah I got to visit with himfor a minute and and yeah, I'm
just, you know, going throughall that stuff and there's just,
there's so much precision and somuch you know, kind of under the
surface that is it's just, it'sso fascinating that you can
(08:07):
never be perfect.
But to strive for perfection, Ithink is it's just really
exciting and enjoyable for me.
Trent Manning (08:13):
Oh yeah, for
sure.
Yeah.
And I think, you know, mostpeople say it's the variety that
we're not doing the exact samething every day.
And I keep thinking about thisfriend of mine, he works at a
Ford dealership he's constantlypulling engines on F1 fifties,
you know, day after day.
I mean, he's, you know, postpicture on social media and he's
(08:35):
got the whole body off of thechassis, you know,
Tyler Miget (08:41):
yeah.
Yeah.
One of those, what was that like2013 to 2015 or something?
They were like, yeah, just acouple connectors and just pull
the cab off.
Yeah, great idea.
Trent Manning (08:51):
that's, yep.
That's what he's doing on those.
And I mean, I'm sure that can befun and challenging, but I
think, you know, after you doone, you really wanna do three
or four or 10 or 15
Tyler Miget (09:03):
yeah.
Yeah.
And there's, yeah, there's justso much, you know, kind of in
our field that you get to solvea new problem every day.
And you know, and I think themore we can, like, the more I've
leaned in with kind of theleadership aspect of it with you
know, kind of the culture stuffwith our crew and our facility
here at Harmony Club you know, better training.
(09:24):
Gets better results.
So I think, you know, I stillget kind, I get to scratch that
itch of being able to coachpeople up and, you know, kind
help'em understand, you know,why we're doing what we're
doing, you know, as the linecoach,
Trent Manning (09:37):
Yeah.
No, that's awesome.
And I like using that term too.
For employees coaching causedoing.
you're coaching'em, you're not,you know, bossing them around or
telling'em what to do.
You're coaching them, you'retrying to work with'em and make
them better at what they'redoing.
Tyler Miget (09:53):
yeah.
No doubt
Trent Manning (09:54):
Yeah.
So, yeah, I really like thatterm.
What's your least favorite partof the job?
Tyler Miget (09:59):
man.
It's being interrupted.
I, I really love getting kind ofinto that like hyper focus
groove.
So where I'm at, we get like awinter season, so that's when I,
you know, do all my big projectsand stuff.
And I always have like thisacclimation period coming out,
like in the springtime where I'mgetting back into the rhythm of
(10:20):
being interrupted, like midproject, you know, like, let me,
lemme finish this you know, whatever I'm doing and then I'll
come get right with you.
Or, you know, dropping somethingwhen it's urgent.
So yeah, that's,
Trent Manning (10:34):
Yeah,
Tyler Miget (10:35):
my wife is cracking
up right now.
Trent Manning (10:37):
yeah.
No, that's, I mean, it's achallenge.
It really is.
Because yeah, you put your headdown, you start doing something,
and then you get interrupted andyou know, you come back an hour
later or two hours later and youget focused again and you get
interrupted Never gonna get thisfinished.
But,
Tyler Miget (10:53):
yeah.
I'm sure.
I'm sure there's so many of uswho are so, have also such an
efficiency bent that we love, you know, optimizing our
processes and stuff like that, that yeah.
For probably for most of us toget pulled out of that.
Trent Manning (11:10):
yeah I don't
know.
I think for me, I almost enjoyit too.
'cause it is, it.
It like, works with my a DD likeoh, over here.
Got
Tyler Miget (11:21):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (11:21):
Jr.
A little bit of a squirrelsometimes
Tyler Miget (11:25):
Oh man.
Yeah.
Hey
Trent Manning (11:26):
I do think
Tyler Miget (11:27):
Trent?
Trent Manning (11:28):
Yeah.
Go ahead.
Tyler Miget (11:29):
Yeah.
Do you know how many turfequipment technicians with a DD
it takes to change a light bulb?
Would
Trent Manning (11:36):
I do not.
Tyler Miget (11:38):
you like to see my
bike?
Trent Manning (11:40):
Yes.
Yeah.
What kind of bike do you have?
Mean, I can
Tyler Miget (11:44):
It's a, oh yeah.
Trent Manning (11:46):
a, Yeah.
Tyler Miget (11:48):
It's got pegs.
Trent Manning (11:49):
That's
Tyler Miget (11:50):
Oh man.
Trent Manning (11:51):
stuff.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What's your favorite tool?
Tyler Miget (11:55):
Oh, it's gotta be
the Milwaukee anything.
Trent Manning (12:00):
I love
Tyler Miget (12:01):
i'm such a hooch
for that dude.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah, so I picked up theextended three eights ratchet
and that thing is so handy.
You can get in anywhere with it.
Trent Manning (12:13):
Yeah.
With that being extended.
Tyler Miget (12:16):
yeah, you do.
You can get in a little easierto some tighter spaces, you
know, like, I don't know, likeon a John Deere 8,700 or
whatever, or one of thoseterrain cuts or whatever you're
pulling the drive line out.
It's, you know, it's reallyeasy.
You get enough leverage to breakit off, and then enough.
Enough juice to be able to screw'em out or something like that.
So yeah, I really like, yeah,Milwaukee, anything.
(12:38):
But yeah the extended threeeights is pretty sweet, but also
like, just what they haveavailable on like the M 12 and M
18 platforms are it, they're soawesome.
It's just such a wide variety ofthings that they can they can
pump out.
So yeah big fan of that stuff.
Trent Manning (12:55):
all the different
things.
And I mean, if anything hasrevolutionized mechanicing, I
mean it has
Tyler Miget (13:02):
It's the batteries.
Trent Manning (13:03):
those tools,
battery tools,
Tyler Miget (13:05):
It's crazy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You're not dragging a airlinearound, man.
That's pretty sweet, man.
Trent Manning (13:11):
I know I've told
it on the podcast several times
that it kind of cracks me up.
I got a snap on half inch impactand we use that, you know, for
everything, tires and all thatstuff.
And if it won't bust it loose, the guys was like, what am I
gonna do?
I'm like, we got a pneumatic oneman, try it.
Tyler Miget (13:30):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (13:30):
if, you know, if
I'm using the, you know, the
electric on something, like whenyou gonna be done with that?
I'm like, an electric one in thetool, or I mean, a pneumatic in
the toolbox, you know?
Tyler Miget (13:40):
yeah.
That's,
Trent Manning (13:41):
hose.
You gotta take an arrow hose andhook to it.
But
Tyler Miget (13:45):
oh man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's one thing I, I do missabout just about my like, car
shop tools that both of minehave bit the dust since then.
But Snap-on used to have a gunthat had like a clutch in it so
you could like snap somethingfree and then go with it.
Do you know if Milwaukee has,you know, anything
Trent Manning (14:07):
I don't,
Tyler Miget (14:08):
or if anybody has
that?
I'm sure Snap-on does, but thesnap-on trucks not come here.
Trent Manning (14:13):
like a heavy
impact.
On the little screw guns, youknow, they have a clutch and I
love that for like, Blowers orstring trimmers or something
like that.
I use the
Tyler Miget (14:23):
Yeah, no doubt
Trent Manning (14:24):
When I'm putting
it back together.
And it's nice because you canbreak it loose with your hand
and then hit the trigger and zipthe
Tyler Miget (14:31):
for sure.
Yeah.
I miss that.
Trent Manning (14:33):
super handy.
Tyler Miget (14:35):
Yeah, clutch for
sure.
Trent Manning (14:38):
What do you do to
relax or find your balance?
Tyler Miget (14:42):
Oh, man, I well,
I've been to therapy a lot, so
Trent Manning (14:47):
Well, let's talk
about that.
'cause that
Tyler Miget (14:49):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (14:49):
important.
I mean, serious.
Tyler Miget (14:51):
yeah,
Trent Manning (14:52):
yeah, I mean, I
joke a little, but you know, and
I wanna say the episode that'sdropping tomorrow David Gummo,
he we were talking about therapyand getting help and mental
health and how important it
Tyler Miget (15:05):
I tell you what,
man.
Trent Manning (15:06):
care how old you
are or what you do or how you
were brought up, it can't hurt
Tyler Miget (15:11):
Yeah.
Yeah.
I couldn't agree more.
I, you know, I think there's alot to be said for finding like,
you know, a good therapist, somebody who's gonna fit your
vibe.
I actually I got connected withmy therapist, just, you know,
through some people that weknew.
But the reason I picked the onethat I have seen for years in
particular, I keep of sayingthis the reason I picked him was
(15:33):
because I thought if we got intoa fist fight that he would hit
me and it would hurt really bad.
Like, you know, and then I had,he had one of my friends that we
were running that nonprofittogether.
She asked me, she goes, do youthink that, do you think that
you want somebody who you couldget physically violent with
because you feel your emotionswith such an intensity that if,
(15:55):
you know, if they could handlethe physical violence, perhaps
they could handle the emotionalviolence as well.
And I was like, just a, me justtears immediately.
Just Oh, a mess.
I was like, yeah, probably.
I don't know, maybe, but oh man.
Yeah I think the therapy, theself-knowledge, you know, like I
always want to be a betterversion of me and I think, you
(16:19):
know, just like, you know, having coached so much for a
long time, it just made, it madesense for me to, you know, be
able to have somebody outside ofme and outside of like those
immediate relationships and youknow, and somebody with a, you
know, an education and anexpertise to.
Be able to coach me up, like,Hey, you know, how can you, how
(16:41):
can I be a better me?
And, you know, we go and talkabout that.
And yeah, it's been, that's beengreat, you know, just as far as
helping me be a balanced humanbeing let alone a better husband
and father.
You know, like, I think themeasure of us as men, and I
think, you know, probably mostof the people who would listen
to this, but like, just betweenyou and me, you know, I think
(17:03):
the measure of us as men is therelationships and you know, that
kind of stuff that we leavebehind.
You know, you could turn arancher, you know, know what
Toro part numbers are foreverything.
But, you know, that doesn'tmatter in the grand scheme of
things.
I, in my opinion.
So, that's,
Trent Manning (17:20):
You're right
about that.
Tyler Miget (17:21):
Yeah, as far as
being balanced, you know, I
think that's been super helpfulfor me.
I, when I saw this question, Idon't know, I think.
I think work is in some, issatisfying for me in a way that,
you know, I think re relaxationis really satisfying for a lot
of people.
you know, as A-D-A-D-D-A-D-H-Dbrain people there's a lot of
(17:43):
stuff going on in there.
So to have some of that besatiated by going and tinkering
and doing whatever that isactually really satisfying for
me.
So I, we've got, you know, a fewacres north of Fort Collins that
we we bought, and I've fixed upthe house and now we're working
on kind of the property and theoutside stuff.
And so I just got on my littletractor and bush hogged like a
(18:06):
few acres just for fun.
And it was like cathartic and,you know, peaceful.
And anytime I go out back nowI'm like looking at'em like.
Looks really good.
I'm really happy.
You know, I did that.
And you know, the other, we gota, we raised meat chickens and
and laying hands.
So we've got like 60 somethingchickens in the garage right
now.
(18:26):
And you know, the other day Iwas like, man, I need to put up
a new coop for them.
And so I just went out and threwthe box blade on the tractor and
just prepped the land a littlebit and you know, set up a
foundation for it.
So that, I mean, that stuff, it,maybe it's not relaxing, I
suppose, but it is reallysatisfying for me, like satiates
that, you know, that go thing.
(18:47):
And but yeah, anytime I'm nextto water, that is peaceful for
me for sure.
So, we've got some nicereservoirs and streams and stuff
up here, but, you know, anytimegoing to the the ocean or lake
Michigan actually, we went therefor a vacation last year.
And if you go on the.
No, but it's almost exactly likeit, dude.
(19:07):
It like, so we stayed we stayedon the eastern coast of it you
know, on this bluff that likeoverlooked the lake.
Just our family, you know, we'rea five minute walk to the beach
around the bluffs and it's like, you know, a hundred yards or
something out and it's likechest deep water at most.
And we've, my Lauren and I'sboys are four in one.
(19:29):
So they, you know, obviouslyyounger than and they were just
able to just like, play in thewater.
It wasn't salty.
It was, you know, gets in youreyes.
It's just lake water, but it'slike big sandy beaches.
Gosh they might have won me overup there.
Trent Manning (19:42):
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (19:44):
I'll never befriend
a ER though.
Just kidding.
Trent Manning (19:47):
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (19:48):
I just always talk
trash to ERs.
I'm gonna try and say thiscarefully because I never wanna
speak ill of anybody.
And the situation I came into atHarmony Club was was it was
really challenging.
You know, I just think that, youknow, probably for a couple
iterations of superintendent andequipment manager, there was a
(20:09):
lot of, you know, animosity andmaybe not a lot of great lanes
of communication.
And I think a lot of stuff gotoverlooked for a long time.
And so there's just been a lotof like backed up maintenance
and.
I've just like, I feel like I'vebeen on, you know, kind of
(20:29):
dialed up to 120% since I camehere in July.
You know, I think it was reallyhard feeling so behind and so,
just like overwhelmed man youknow, coming into having like,
you know, seven inch John Deerereels and, you know, none of
them have none of them have arelief grind just because, you
(20:51):
know, somebody was in here that, you know, they just didn't know.
And they were just trying to dothe best they could with what
they had.
And so coming in on the heels ofthat was really, it was really
challenging because, you know, like we talked about earlier,
geez, you're trying to do thatand you're trying to put a, you
know, or a relief and a spin onsomething that's got 60 thou or
more of cone in it.
(21:13):
And then, you know, somethingbreaks down out in the field and
you gotta go, you know?
Rescue somebody from a pond or,you know, change a tire or, you
know, without a dedicated cardor, you know, like tools, you
know?
So moving in and gettingcomfortable here has been a
process.
I will say that having thewinter to kind of catch up has
(21:37):
been really awesome.
And our ownership and managementthey're really awesome and
they're, you know, they're supersupportive and they're helping
out a ton.
I've got a great superintendentthat I work for.
We've got a great team here.
So, you know, the hard days arehard and that, you know, I'd
rather be in a foxhole withpeople that, you know, I enjoy
(21:59):
and have my bath than I.
You know, feeling like I'm outon an island and, or, you know,
like alone in my cave and nobodygives a crap.
And so yeah, so, so it's beenchallenging, but, you know,
we're green and up and we'relooking good and I'm thrilled to
kinda see some of the fruits ofthe labor, you know what I'm
saying?
Trent Manning (22:18):
follow up with
that.
How important is that to havepeople that you work with, that
you get along with, that youknow they have your back and I
mean, just like you said, you'rein a foxhole together.
Tyler Miget (22:31):
yeah.
I mean, I think one of the, Ithink one of the greatest things
you can do as a person, foranother person is just to be
there you know, and bearsomething with another person
and just have their back.
So to be able to have that in aplace.
You know, where you're spending40 or more hours of your awake
(22:52):
time in a week, you know, it'sso meaningful to be there for
people.
And it's so meaningful to havepeople who just like flat out
show up for you.
I had that at the old course aswell.
You know, my, my boss there hehad our back.
Like, for real.
And I just, I don't think theimportance of that can be
overstated.
You know, and I think it takes alot, and people, and I think
(23:14):
people have to be willing toshow up for one another in that
way.
And but yeah, I mean it's, Idon't know if I could overstate
the importance of beingavailable and being willing to
just show up and you know, kindof.
Bear it with the people thatyou're working with, you know?
Yeah.
Trent Manning (23:34):
that's good
stuff.
Do you have a mentor in theindustry?
Tyler Miget (23:39):
I had maybe one of
the best of all time,
Trent Manning (23:44):
awesome.
Tyler Miget (23:44):
yeah, no I've
listened to a few of the
podcasts.
Okay.
Confession time.
I didn't know that Real TurfText was a podcast.
I just thought it was like theWhatsApp community.
I was talking to JustinWilkerson at CPS and he was
like, yeah, if you listen toany, the podcast, I was like,
I'm an idiot.
I'm sorry.
There's a podcast.
So,
Trent Manning (24:05):
man.
It's all good.
Tyler Miget (24:06):
so I so I've
listened to a few and where was
I just talking?
I just, I got totallysidetracked on Justin Wilkerson.
What is the,
Trent Manning (24:13):
about mentors and
Tyler Miget (24:15):
oh, mentors.
Yeah.
Sorry.
Yeah.
How can I forget?
Yeah, are you sure you don'twanna see my bike?
Trent Manning (24:22):
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (24:23):
man, so, so the guy
who the guy who was the mechanic
at the old course at Lovelandwho I replaced, he had been
there for 43 years and yeah, Imean, like he, he worked in the
shop when it was an old farmshop that was original to the
land.
Gosh.
And like, I think they openedthe course in 59.
(24:45):
And he, I mean, he got therelike in the eighties, but, you
know, seeing like his picturesand stuff was crazy.
You know, of just how it hadchanged and all the stuff that
they had done throughout theyears.
But he taught me, you know, allabout like the real geometry and
all of this stuff that he had,you know, I think he, I don't
know if he was connected at allwith like the cut line is king
(25:07):
kind of stuff, but he still wasable to explain all of the
intricacies of like, you know, kind of the trigonometry and the
relationships of the angles andstuff and, you know, kind of why
you're setting what and howyou're setting it.
So I remember it was one of myfirst, it was like my first week
on the job, and he had a, he, sohe had a lifetime golf pass, so
(25:29):
he was out there every morning, but I had adjusted reels on a
Jacobson Greens King, four plus.
And I had, I don't know what Idid, but I, they were off.
So I, so, you know, we had oneside that was like, you know,
cutting everything and one sidethat wasn't cutting anything.
So, my units were all off andand it was very evident in the
(25:51):
practice Green that it mowed.
And Dale just walks over andyeah, he, he coached me up a
little bit and was like, youknow, you, something's not
right.
Let's take a look at it.
So we got to the bottom of it.
But yeah, I mean, I can't sayenough good things about Dale.
Just just one of those guys likeslow and steady, calm and, you
know, the stories I heard werethat he had some fire, but he
(26:13):
was always he was always sogracious with me and just made
himself available.
You know, he was like, you know,I would text him on a Monday.
He was there on a Tuesday, and,you know, I could call him.
He's since moved, but, you know,he's still he's still very
available as a resource.
So, yeah.
Can't, I lucked out, so Iremember, that's why I was
talking to the other peopleabout listening to the podcast.
(26:35):
I have heard a lot of people whohave had to kind of take a lot
of the real geometry and stuff, you know, on the chin and, you
know, kinda learn it all thehard way and, you know, figure
out why it's scalping or figureout why it won't cut right.
Or whatever.
And, yeah, I was super duperfortunate to, to have a guy like
Dale you know, kind of be therefor me and coach me up and, you
(26:59):
know, and the other guys whoworked there had all been there
for a long time.
So, yeah, I was super fortunateto come into a place where a lot
of people had my back while Iwas getting up to speed for
sure.
Yeah, man.
Trent Manning (27:10):
for sure.
Do you have a technician you'dlike to work with for a day?
Tyler Miget (27:15):
Oh, anybody but
Mike Henderson.
What a Gober.
No, I'm teasing.
No.
So Mike's the mechanic at PebbleBeach.
Yeah, we hung out a bunch duringthe Melrose, so I just, yeah,
just man,
Trent Manning (27:29):
dude.
Is he
Tyler Miget (27:30):
he is a good dude.
Yeah.
I loved hanging out with Mike.
Yeah, we had a bunch of funhonestly.
Trent Manning (27:37):
Just time out at
or pause after we went to the
show and I drove up the coastand we stopped by and saw
Michael
Tyler Miget (27:47):
Oh, heck yeah,
Trent Manning (27:49):
and man, it was
awesome.
Tyler Miget (27:51):
dude.
Yeah.
That's so awesome.
Did you drive the PCH up?
Trent Manning (27:56):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (27:57):
Oh man.
How was that?
Trent Manning (27:58):
yeah, it was
awesome.
It was beautiful.
Yeah.
Big sur and yeah, all thatstuff.
Highly recommend it.
If you ever get a chance to doit, just do it.
Tyler Miget (28:06):
Oh, that's a dream.
Heck yeah.
Trent Manning (28:08):
it was awesome.
Yeah.
We went all the way up to SanFrancisco it,
Tyler Miget (28:12):
Nice.
Trent Manning (28:13):
flew back from
San Francisco.
Tyler Miget (28:15):
Oh, that's a great
idea.
Trent Manning (28:17):
yeah.
Super, super good time.
And but anyway, going to PebbleBeach, I mean, it's like no
other, you'd like drive out onthe course on, I think it's the
14th hole and you're right nextto the ocean, and then you dip
into the maintenance facility.
Tyler Miget (28:32):
Oh man.
Yeah.
Trent Manning (28:34):
of the ocean from
the maintenance facility is just
incredible.
Tyler Miget (28:38):
Yeah.
That's so great.
Trent Manning (28:39):
sorry.
I didn't mean to
Tyler Miget (28:40):
no, not that.
Yeah.
It does a nice looking bike.
Trent.
Trent Manning (28:44):
Right.
Tyler Miget (28:45):
how many more times
can I make that joke?
Probably five.
Man, honestly I would love towork with anybody, you know,
anybody in that in that chat.
I think, you know, going to justsee how anybody's doing
anything.
I think they're, you know, wisdom is wisdom no matter where
it's from and there's a ton ofwisdom and it's evident in our,
in our.
(29:06):
Group, you know, our real turftech group, but Al and also in
the Tito Group there's a ton ofguys in there.
I tell you what, Phil Turner isthe mechanic at Hoy Lake or
Royal Liverpool.
And we got to hang out duringthe Burnhard thing and he, it's
awesome.
Yeah, I, and just like, they hadto like rip me out of the shop.
(29:29):
'cause they were like, allright, we're gonna go on the
bus, we're gonna go look at thecourse, you know, and blah,
blah.
I was like, I don't care.
Like, let me hang out.
Yeah.
Being able to work with him or,you know, any of those other
guys over there, gas is one.
James, you know.
Chris Mitten who after the afterthe after our chat in San Diego
he texted me and was like, whatthe hell dude?
(29:51):
Like Chris, who yeah, he gave mea hard time about it, but yeah,
I was just like swimming innames and people and, you know,
all that stuff.
But
Trent Manning (30:00):
get to meet
Matthew Axton when you were over
there?
Tyler Miget (30:03):
don't do this to
me.
Trent, don't.
Trent Manning (30:06):
That's cool.
That's cool.
If you didn't, it's all good.
Tyler Miget (30:09):
Oh, man.
I think Matt is one of the guysthat I missed.
I met James and Chris and Ithink Matthew was the third of
those three who kind oforganized Tito that I didn't get
the chance to meet.
But yeah, I mean.
Trent Manning (30:23):
at, yeah, I don't
remember the name of that really
nice course he was at, and thenhe went somewhere else, I think,
just recently or within the lastlittle bit.
But
Tyler Miget (30:32):
Yeah, I'll tell you
another one is yeah, Barry Drean
he he's now teaching for the theBurnhart Academy over there.
So he's doing a lot of theirlike mechanical classes and
curricula over there.
And so I took the grinding classover there during their continue
to learn kind of BTME conferenceand just a day with him I was
(30:57):
like, I was throwing just likerandom from left field questions
at him about stuff I had heardabout but didn't know about.
And every time, like thoughtfulanswer.
Just like on the spot, you know, knew what he was talking about.
But I mean, honestly, anybody, like in our group too, like
there's, you know, like you andlike a bunch of the, other more
(31:19):
seasoned veteran guys that like,I don't know if you have like
the parts, catalog and stuffmemorized, but like, if you
could just throw out a, Hey,what's this part?
And people are like respondingback with, you know, whatever
the the reference numbers arefor it you know, that those
people have had some some milesin the shop.
(31:40):
So, yeah I think that would be,you know, just gonna see all of
that stuff would be super rad.
Trent Manning (31:46):
Yeah.
I mean, anytime you get theopportunity to go hang out with
somebody else, I do it.
Tyler Miget (31:52):
Yeah.
Heck yeah.
Trent Manning (31:54):
I recommend that
to anyone listening speaking of
Gaz, I think he's gonna comeover and hang out with me in
September.
Tyler Miget (32:05):
Shut up.
Trent Manning (32:05):
Yeah.
I'm so stoked.
I'm like, are you sure you wannacome over here and hang out with
me?
Tyler Miget (32:11):
Wow.
Trent Manning (32:12):
A lot of cool
people over here, but
Tyler Miget (32:14):
Oh, that's awesome,
dude.
Trent Manning (32:16):
yeah, I'm all
about it.
But I'm
Tyler Miget (32:17):
Oh, that'll be a
hoot.
Trent Manning (32:19):
and I told him,
you know, I mean, I'm fortunate
here because I got JohnPatterson right down the road
from me, which is another
Tyler Miget (32:26):
Oh, sweet.
Yeah.
Trent Manning (32:28):
Corey Phillips,
he's another legend.
So we're gonna try to.
Try to visit a couple othershops while he is in town and,
Tyler Miget (32:35):
Oh, that'll be
awesome.
Trent Manning (32:37):
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (32:37):
Heck yeah, man.
Trent Manning (32:38):
cool.
Very cool.
Get ready for tips and tricks.
Let's do some tips and tricks.
Tyler Miget (32:45):
Oh God.
Trent Manning (32:46):
tricks you got?
Tyler Miget (32:48):
Oh, Q, massive
imposter syndrome.
Trent Manning (32:52):
that grandpa
taught you.
Tyler Miget (32:54):
Oh man, I sh I
should have more of this.
Tips and tricks.
Go to therapy.
Trent Manning (33:03):
Okay.
Yep.
Tyler Miget (33:05):
let's see, another
tip.
Okay, this is gonna be superrandom Trent, but I've taken
some cooking classes on herelocally and when my wife and I
travel, we try and, you know, get some cuisine in us.
But the way really efficientkitchens run, I think is super
helpful for people who do anylike.
(33:26):
Systems oriented stuffespecially like physical,
tactile stuff like what we'redoing.
So like rebuilding reels or, youknow, even like breaking'em down
and grinding them you know, orstuff that you're gonna have to
do on repeat.
So there's the French term portis meas and plus, it's basically
just everything in its place.
So to be able to have stuff kindof lined up, lined out, and
(33:49):
being able to optimize yourworkflow for me that's been
super helpful.
So, in a cooking sense, youknow, you're just, you're firing
up dinner, but if you haveeverything chopped first,
everything, you know, kind ofcut up and all your seasonings
out that you want and and allthat stuff, it's a much smoother
operation if you're not havingto do knife work while you've
(34:09):
got the, you know, the pan onthe heat and the, you know, the
chicken going or whatever.
So, yeah, man, that's,
Trent Manning (34:17):
Yeah, no, I mean
that's that's really, I mean, I
think it's spot on and a reallygood point.
I wasn't thinking about theFrench terms, when you started
talking about that, immediatelywhere I go is the Japanese
terms, and I don't
Tyler Miget (34:35):
oh,
Trent Manning (34:36):
words, but it's
lean manufacturing.
If you just Google leanmanufacturing and guy that, he
wrote a book and it's a versionof lean manufacturing, but it's
two second lean.
'cause he is trying tostreamline it.
it really started at Toyota andlike the 1940s, and I can't
(34:58):
remember the gentleman's name,he come up with this system and
it started out as three s it's,you know, the three standards
and it's sort, I'm puttingmyself on the spot here.
Tyler Miget (35:13):
Yeah.
Here we go.
Trent Manning (35:14):
yeah, sort
straighten and what else?
And clean or something likethat.
I know that doesn't start with anest, but it is it's maybe it's
sweep and then it goes to nowthey're at like seven s.
But
Tyler Miget (35:31):
Oh, okay.
Trent Manning (35:32):
the two second
lean guy talked about in these
processes, everybody alwayswants to make it more
complicated and do more,
Tyler Miget (35:43):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (35:43):
really all you
need is the three.
Yes.
so you learn the eight types ofwaste.
So you got, you know, one of thebig ones that we do all the time
in the shop is movement.
And movement is a ton of waste.
If you're walking to thetoolbox, you're walking to the
lift or you're walking back andforth.
And that's just a waste of time.
(36:04):
So, I mean, you're making methink about Like get all the
tools you need in the spot, youneed them.
it's something, I mean, I'mnowhere near the three s
standard, but it's somethingI've been working on.
So just say for instance, thevice that I changed bed knives
(36:25):
in sin, I have a cabinet.
So it is like a nut and boltband basically.
That I modified that I put allmy greens bed knives in I got
Tyler Miget (36:35):
nice.
Trent Manning (36:35):
knife screws
there.
I got the bit for the bed knifescrews.
You know, I try to geteverything I need right, right
there in, in that spot
Tyler Miget (36:45):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (36:45):
where before my
bed knives were in the parts
room.
So that's, you know, whatever, ahundred steps to get the parts
room.
Tyler Miget (36:52):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (36:53):
that's what,
Tyler Miget (36:54):
Oh
Trent Manning (36:55):
on for the last
couple years.
And your comment about thekitchen stuff made me think
about that.
Tyler Miget (37:01):
yeah.
That's awesome.
I'll I'll have to send you apicture, but I this winter I did
totally revamp because I thinkI'm on real number 43 or
something that I'm rebuildingthis winter.
And I've got my whole bid and Iset up right under the vice and
all that little parts bit, soI'll have to send you a Of that.
But yeah I mean, I think in aengineering class I took the one
(37:23):
of the hallmarks that they'retalking about or that, you know,
this guy was teaching on for oneday that has really stuck with
me has been there's a lot more.
Elegance in engineering that isfocused on subtraction than
addition.
So making something more simpleis more elegant than making
something, you know, adding abell or a whistle or making
(37:44):
something unnecessarily morecomplex.
So, that's really cool.
I wrote down your, the leanmanufacturing and the two second
lien and and that stuff.
So I'll have to check that out, brother.
Trent Manning (37:54):
it is.
I had to look it up.
Sort, systemize shine.
Tyler Miget (38:00):
Ooh,
Trent Manning (38:02):
Yeah, and that's
like the most important ones in
my opinion.
From what I've learned about it,another really good read is the
Toyota Way.
And
Tyler Miget (38:12):
okay.
Trent Manning (38:13):
lean
manufacturing and that kind of
stuff.
But
Tyler Miget (38:16):
Oh man, I love it.
Trent Manning (38:18):
it's a, yeah,
it's a super short book also.
Really good stuff.
It's just it's a whole lotharder to get everybody else to
buy into it.
Tyler Miget (38:27):
Yeah.
Thanks man.
I appreciate that.
Yeah.
It's harder.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Trent Manning (38:31):
the challenge.
but, you know, and it's, it goesback to everything has a place,
everything, you know,
Tyler Miget (38:39):
A place where
everything in its place.
Yep.
Trent Manning (38:41):
Yep.
All that.
All that good stuff.
Tyler Miget (38:43):
Heck yeah.
Trent Manning (38:45):
so like I said,
I'm nowhere near there, but
we're working towards it.
Tyler Miget (38:49):
Heck yeah.
That's what I'm,
Trent Manning (38:51):
let's talk about
the Bernhardt.
Was it Academy?
Is that what they called it?
Or what?
Tyler Miget (38:58):
man I wish I knew
exactly what they would want it
to be called.
I've called it probably ninedifferent things.
So it.
Trent Manning (39:07):
Well just pick
one, I mean,
Tyler Miget (39:09):
Yeah, so the
Bernhard delegation I believe is
what it's been for a long time.
I think their partnership withthe G-C-S-A-A, they branded it
as the links to success when wego that way.
And then when they come thisway, it'll be the root to
success.
So, yeah, for whatever that wasI'm not sure I was unclear, but
(39:30):
yeah, I mean, what a awesometime.
Some great people that I met.
Some really fun connections thatI hope remain connections for
for a long time.
You know, I've only recentlyfound out that networking is is
not just necessary, but it's oneof the fun parts of kind of our
industry and,
Trent Manning (39:49):
yeah, for sure.
Tyler Miget (39:50):
I just always
thought of networking as like a
sleazy thing where, you know, you're just, you want something
from somebody who has somethingcool or whatever.
But that, you know, I thinkbeing able to reframe it as
something that it, you know, ismutually beneficial for for both
people is really cool.
So, yeah, man.
So we got to visit four coursesthat are on the great Britain
(40:11):
and United Kingdom top 100.
And, so there was and then Ithink two of them are on the
world top 100.
So we went, so we like landedovernight flight, got off the
plane, took a bus straight to acourse called Motown which is
where they hosted the firstRyder Cup on UK soil.
And it's a Heathland golfcourse, which.
(40:34):
I don't know if I totallyunderstand what a huge land is,
but there was a lot of heath andland, so I think I'm on my way.
Trent Manning (40:44):
I'll take your
word
Tyler Miget (40:45):
but, no.
Trent Manning (40:45):
my head too.
Tyler Miget (40:46):
Yeah, I mean, it
was like, it was kind of like a
park land, but they had a ton oflike peat so the undulations
from day to day based on likethe dryness of the soil or, you
know, like whatever the ET wasthey can change a ton.
You know, and it was it AlistairMcKenzie's first course that he
designed.
Trent Manning (41:05):
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (41:06):
yeah.
So, there were some folks onthat, on, on our delegation who
were super like architecturenerds.
So I just got to kind of likerevel with them without
understanding what they were sopumped about.
Trent Manning (41:20):
So how many of
you were they?
Tyler Miget (41:23):
Yeah, so there were
nine of us from North America.
Carol Turner was the LoneCanadian.
And then the rest of us werefrom the us.
Yeah.
And just a, just like such awide array of like kinds of
people.
I was the only mechanic.
There were two assistant supersand then the rest were
(41:44):
superintendents.
No, sorry.
Brent Downs is a director ofagronomy.
'Cause he's fancy.
Trent Manning (41:52):
I mean, that's
the superintendent in my book,
so
Tyler Miget (41:56):
I don't know.
Yeah, he's got two courses thathe takes care of.
But anyways really awesome.
So we got to see RoyalLiverpool.
We got to see, dale wherethey'll host the open in two
years.
And then we gotta see Wallacewhich we got a presentation from
from John McLaughlin you know, before we even went and saw the
(42:17):
course.
And I just can't say enough goodthings about him and the way he
leads.
He's such like an aspirationalguy.
And inspirational guy too, forsure.
And then and then we also got tosee we got to go visit with
John, led Lewi, I believe is howyou say his last name led.
Who knows, I should I'm a badperson,
Trent Manning (42:37):
word for that one
too.
Yeah, sure.
Tyler Miget (42:39):
but he is the he's
the head of grounds for
Manchester City football club.
And so he oversees like all ofthe pitches and it was really
cool.
We got to sit with him and someof the folks on his team and got
to see how they do likedifferent soil testing and like
in the profiles of the soil andhow they're like measuring like
(43:01):
harness compaction, shear forcesand stuff and how that affects
the players throughout thecourse of a game or throughout
the course of like theirpractices and stuff.
And they're like they're workingin conjunction with like the
health team to, you know, kindof figure out some of that
stuff.
Some of it was over my head, butit was fascinating nonetheless
that
Trent Manning (43:21):
how much goes
into that?
Tyler Miget (43:24):
it is.
Trent Manning (43:25):
You know?
Plus, you know, the whole sportsfield thing, you know?
I mean, I thought there was alot going on at golf.
And you
Tyler Miget (43:31):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (43:32):
those sports
field guys, they only got an
acre to take care of.
But that acre, man
Tyler Miget (43:37):
Oh man.
Yeah.
Talk about smooth and true babe.
Trent Manning (43:41):
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (43:43):
Yeah, we, yeah.
So yeah, getting a, you know, chop it up in Brent he is in
Indiana.
He also has a podcast.
So, you know, we had all the theBernhard delegates on kind of
in, in two goes.
And he just released his thepart two yesterday.
Trent Manning (44:01):
No
Tyler Miget (44:02):
it's called the Low
Downs Podcast.
And it was just so fun to beable to kind of recall it and
remember it with people who hadtheir own perspectives and
stuff.
And one thing my friend Ryan.
Franklin, who's at IndianapolisMotor Speedway.
One thing that he said was like, his favorite part was like, the
in-between time like the programstuff was all really awesome.
(44:24):
The conference, the dinners, thecourses, all, you know, the
facilities were amazing.
But, kind of like the stuff thathappened in between those on the
bus or, you know, having a beerafter touring Wallace a or, just
going around Liverpool, like, Ithink that's what kind of like
(44:45):
solidified, what made us feellike a crew.
And I mean, for instance so MattGole, the guy who he just won
the President's award at CTS sohe was on our delegation.
And.
I so I was asking him and Brentto help me understand like
organic matter in soil profilesand stuff.
(45:06):
And seriously, for one hour Ijust sat like shoulder to
shoulder with Matt Gole and hejust like explained this stuff
to me and how we're working likesand through the profile black
layer, like all of the organicmatter stuff that's like, you
know, like it can beoverwhelming and very
scientific.
You know, my boss has a greatcure for insomnia.
(45:29):
like reading some articles aboutit.
But but honestly like just to beable to have access and
friendships with people who arenumber one willing and number
two, able to explain stuff to adumb like that is, it was just
really cool, you know, to beable to come back with an
understanding of like.
(45:51):
Like, why are we pulling coresand doing deep trying to, you
know, like different stuff likethat at a deeper level.
Yeah, it was really cool.
Super grateful for it.
Trent Manning (45:58):
yeah.
No, that is, yeah.
is really awesome.
And I wanted to back up a littlebit, and you were talking about
the networking thing and howimportant that is, you never
know what that networking willlead to, lead to anything, I
mean, just my personalexperience, I've, I mean, this
(46:20):
industry is filled with so manyreally good people.
Tyler Miget (46:24):
yeah.
Just solid people.
Yeah.
Trent Manning (46:27):
people people
that bring enjoyment to my life
on a daily basis that I've metin this industry.
I've made some, you know, truefriends in the industry.
I mean, I got a ton ofacquaintances, but I mean, I'm
just thinking.
So, Rob Renner, he's at NationalGolf Links of America I wanna
(46:52):
keep the story pg, but he kindof cusses like a sailor.
Super good dude.
I mean, don't get me wrong, buthe's from New York, long Island,
right?
So anyway he cusses a lot.
And anyway, we just kinda hit itoff and I mean, we text, you
know, not every day, but a fewtimes a month or whatever.
And, I gonna try to plan a trip.
(47:15):
He goes fishing like every dayafter work.
I'm gonna try to plan a tripthis fall and go fishing with
this dude.
Tyler Miget (47:22):
Do it, dude.
Trent Manning (47:23):
It's just, you
know,
Tyler Miget (47:24):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (47:25):
things like that.
Tyler Miget (47:27):
Yeah.
How'd you guys get connected?
Trent Manning (47:30):
Well I met him so
long story, but I was asked to
speak at the New EnglandTurfgrass conference in, when
was this?
Like, I don't remember.
21 Maybe.
it was, no.
Yeah, I think, anyway, and Idrove up there I did that thing
(47:52):
and then I caught the ferry, went over to Long Island and I
was already friends with JRWilson at noac JR.
Set up basically a shop tour forme and Tyler Barrett that works
for Foley.
I.
And he drove us around, JR did.
And we went, I don't know, wewent to like four or five golf
(48:14):
courses in a day.
And anyway, one of'em was RobRenner.
I mean, the other one was whichis right across the road from
Rob Shop is Shinnecock, which, you know, another, I mean, both
of these are top one hundreds.
I mean, they're probably liketop twenties.
I don't know exactly where theranking is.
So anyway, I met him there andtexted him a few times after
(48:38):
that, asked him some questionsabout John Deere stuff.
Anyway, he's a big Jake guy.
He's got all kind of Jacobsonequipment, or maybe not
equipment, but greens mowers.
He's been
Tyler Miget (48:49):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (48:49):
mowers for the
last, whatever, 35 years.
And I think he's gonna stayJacobson Green Mowers until he
retires, whenever
Tyler Miget (48:57):
Cool.
Trent Manning (48:57):
up.
But anyway, just, you know, solid people in this industry.
Tyler Miget (49:01):
That's awesome.
And you get go fishing with him.
Trent Manning (49:04):
well and
Tyler Miget (49:06):
better do.
Trent Manning (49:06):
for you.
Yeah, no, I'm, I am I told himthe last time we text, I'm like,
when's the best time to come?
And,
Tyler Miget (49:13):
yeah, man.
Trent Manning (49:14):
he's like,
anytime we, we'll go fishing
anytime,
Tyler Miget (49:18):
Oh, that's awesome.
Trent Manning (49:19):
you know, for me
and work and all that stuff, I'm
thinking fall will be a goodtime.
Tyler Miget (49:25):
Yeah.
Perfect.
Trent Manning (49:26):
yeah.
And JR he's got a camper, youknow, so he's like, we can set
up the camper.
Tyler Miget (49:32):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (49:32):
just, everybody's
just so nice and accommodating
and we'll,
Tyler Miget (49:36):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (49:36):
do anything for
Tyler Miget (49:38):
You could be living
in a camper down by the river.
Trent Manning (49:42):
that down by the
ocean on Long Island in the
Tyler Miget (49:45):
Come on, man.
Yeah, that, yeah that's a littledifferent than a van down by the
river.
Trent Manning (49:50):
Yeah.
That's that's
Tyler Miget (49:51):
oh, man.
That rocks.
Trent Manning (49:53):
yeah, really good
stuff.
Well, let's quickly talk aboutMelrose a little bit.
Tyler Miget (49:59):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (50:00):
a Melrose
recipient.
Tyler Miget (50:03):
Yes, I was.
Yeah, Melrose was also reallycool.
I think getting to see some moreof the behind the scenes stuff
within the conference and justbeing able to brush shoulders
and ask questions of theleadership of the GCs a was
amazing.
You know, I think getting tohear, so, you know, ta presented
(50:24):
to us that, you know, you know,I don't think it was ever a
doubt that, you know, he wouldbe the president, but I know
Matt Gole was gonna do as muchas he could to mess with him,
so, that was hilarious.
Yeah.
Matt stood up and like adjustedhis pants or something,
Trent Manning (50:39):
Nice.
Tyler Miget (50:39):
At cts.
But anyways yeah, getting tohear some of like the hopes and
the vision for the associationitself.
It was really cool.
And, understanding that, youknow, they're just, they're
people.
The people who are running thething are just people and and
truly their heart is, centeredaround like, how do we best
(51:00):
serve golf coursesuperintendents, assistant
superintendents, directors ofagronomy, you know, like all the
people involved in, in, and thefact that they're like taking a
very clear interest in how toserve equipment managers and
noticing that, there's not a tonof people who can do what we do,
so how do we take care of thepeople who are doing it and grow
the field and, you know, getpeople in the know about it.
(51:25):
Like, I was just, I was flooredhonestly.
You know, and then again, likethe networking, the, You know,
just, you know, being able tohang out and go to dinner, you
know, go over to Kansas CityBarbecue, which is where they
filmed all the the bar scenesand Top Gun and stuff.
So getting over to, you know, getting to share a basket of
fries or whatever with, youknow, whoever was in there for
(51:46):
the night.
And, you know, it was mostly thethe golf course people.
Yeah, it was really cool.
And getting to getting to knowMishka who runs the foundation
and just getting a briefunderstanding of all that she
does was really cool, but it wasalso super impressive and to
hear her desire and, you know, the fact that she like, knew Kim
(52:10):
Melrose who was the CEO of Torofor a long time.
It was really cool.
And her son, Austin, he's atsome place that's super awesome
that I can't remember the name.
Trent Manning (52:19):
Hazel Team
Tyler Miget (52:21):
Hazel team.
Trent Manning (52:22):
Yep.
Tyler Miget (52:23):
I'm so bad with
names.
But yeah, like
Trent Manning (52:26):
it's all good.
Tyler Miget (52:26):
just getting a,
like sit and visit with him at
like a few different points andhim and then the other Melrose
recipients who the leadershipand the equipment manager routes
was really awesome.
And it actually it's alreadyopened up a few doors.
I applied to teach at the GCSAconference next year.
(52:46):
And and was talking with RyanMcClain and who's one of the
honchos over at the Carolina'sGCSA.
And, he was like, you shouldcome teach at Arthur.
And I.
I didn't know I could.
So anyways I, yeah I reached outto him and yeah, and I mean,
even just to like, reach outbriefly and then just be able to
(53:08):
chop it up and catch up for, youknow, how are the kids, how's
the wife, how's life, all thatstuff.
And you know, it's really cool, you know, and and the fact that,
you know, that I've got someserious dirt on Mike Anderson
enough to be able to play P Bullat some point.
Trent Manning (53:26):
Right.
Tyler Miget (53:26):
No.
Yeah, just yeah, I mean, allthose guys John, he's at I
forget where he's at, but he'sbeen at his course for I think
41 years or something.
But again, just like a wealth ofknowledge and a guy that I can
just I did it the other day.
I just texted him and.
You know, say, Hey, how's itgoing?
You know, congratulations on,you know, completing your EMCP
(53:49):
one and two, and you know, andthen just, yeah just really a
bunch of guys, you know, that Ireally admire, honestly.
So yeah, so,
Trent Manning (54:01):
is y'all's group
still connected through like a
WhatsApp or something like that?
Do y'all have a little
Tyler Miget (54:07):
no, we're not.
We probably should be,
Trent Manning (54:10):
I don't, I
There's an idea for you.
Tyler Miget (54:12):
But Trent, look at
you, man, not just pretty face,
dude.
Trent Manning (54:16):
There's not
really any original ideas.
I don't think.
There's very few.
I'm pretty sure when John bozosgot the Melrose, I think his
group, they're still talking toeach other or whatever
Tyler Miget (54:30):
Nice.
Trent Manning (54:30):
you know, they
got a group chat of, and I don't
know if it's in WhatsApp orwhatever.
It's but I do think it's kind ofcool, you know, that they kind
of stay together and, I mean, you could do that with the
delegation too, or, you know,
Tyler Miget (54:42):
yeah, definitely.
Trent Manning (54:43):
cool to keep all
those people together,
Tyler Miget (54:46):
Yeah.
Keep them up.
Yep.
Trent Manning (54:48):
Yeah, I mean,
like you were saying before
about being at a Fox saletogether.
I mean, not that it, the exactsame thing
Tyler Miget (54:55):
yeah
Trent Manning (54:56):
you do something
really special together with a
bunch of other people.
I think it's cool to in touchwith them.
Tyler Miget (55:03):
yeah.
Absolutely.
Trent Manning (55:04):
went on, like
right after she graduated
college.
She went on the world race andit's a Christian retreat type
thing, and you do a differentcountry
Tyler Miget (55:19):
Oh wow.
Trent Manning (55:19):
for like 10
months or whatever.
Anyway the other girls that shewent with on, on the race, they
still get together like once aquarter or something,
Tyler Miget (55:29):
Wow.
Trent Manning (55:30):
you know, and now
they're, you know, they're grown
ass women and with kids andlives and you know, everything
else.
But,
Tyler Miget (55:37):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (55:38):
20 years old when
they done that.
So it's
Tyler Miget (55:41):
Yeah,
Trent Manning (55:41):
that, that they
stay connected for, you know,
all these years.
'cause that was 20 years ago.
Tyler Miget (55:47):
that's great.
Trent Manning (55:47):
'cause we're all
getting older every day.
crazy.
Yeah.
Tyler Miget (55:52):
No doubt.
Trent Manning (55:53):
out.
You ready to do some rapid fire?
Tyler Miget (56:01):
Oh man.
No, but yes.
Trent Manning (56:03):
All right, let's
do it.
What's your favorite movie?
Tyler Miget (56:07):
Oh, I've got so
many a favorite comedy, Dumba
Dumber, favorite cartoon?
Probably Lion King or Hercules.
And favorite kinda drama orwhatever.
Probably Tenet.
I.
It's a Christopher Nolan also.
I could watch anything with himthat he's done.
It's super cool.
Trent Manning (56:26):
Gr Yeah.
Yeah.
Good stuff.
What would be your last meal?
Tyler Miget (56:30):
Oh man.
A Florentine steak with all thefixings.
It's like 4 45 day dry aget-bone that they measure in
kilos.
And they they cook it over achestnut fire I believe with
some chestnuts too.
Yeah.
But my wife and I went to toItaly.
One of our sauce was Florence, and they're known for their
(56:51):
steak and they, and so, theycook, they always cook it pretty
rare.
And she was pregnant, so I gotto eat like a, you know, like a
one point something kilogramsteak off myself.
It was a fabulous time.
Yeah, babe.
Yeah, I think House had somebottles of wine.
Yeah, it was great.
Trent Manning (57:11):
Yeah, that's I,
yeah.
I'm gonna go look that up afterwe get off,
Tyler Miget (57:14):
Do it.
Yeah.
So good.
Trent Manning (57:18):
What are you most
proud of besides your family?
I.
Tyler Miget (57:21):
man.
Trent Manning (57:22):
Time to get
serious.
Tyler Miget (57:24):
Yeah.
Are you sure I can't save myfamily?
Trent Manning (57:27):
Now you, I mean,
Tyler Miget (57:29):
no.
Trent Manning (57:29):
ev I know you're
proud of your family.
We're all proud of our familiesand not to take anything away
from our families.
Tyler Miget (57:37):
Yeah.
Well, as someone who strugglesmightily with imposter syndrome
and also I don't wanna soundlike I'm full of it ever or full
of myself.
Man I'm really proud of kind ofthe trajectory I.
I've been on in this industry.
you know, I've put in a lot ofhard work and I've really made
it a point to learn as much as Ican.
(57:58):
You know, there's probably a tonof guys, you know, even and and
GS who could blow me out of thewater mechanically you know, or
leadership wise or whatever itis.
And I think I, I've just keptpersistent at trying to get
better you know, mechanically orwith the precision stuff or just
(58:22):
even with how I engage peoplethat I'm working with and people
who I I'm in a leadership roleto just always like really
trying to thoughtfully andintentionally improve, i'm
really proud of that.
Yeah.
Trent Manning (58:38):
No that's
awesome.
And I mean, I was kind ofpicking up on that, you know,
you're talking about.
always trying to improveyourself and those things.
And I mean, I think that's, youknow, so, so important.
And if you really work onimproving yourself, everything
else around you gets better.
I believe
Tyler Miget (58:57):
Yeah.
No doubt.
Trent Manning (58:59):
opinion.
I'm no expert.
I don't have a bunch of lettersbehind my name or anything.
Tyler Miget (59:04):
got four, babe.
Come on.
Trent Manning (59:06):
four.
I got four.
But,
Tyler Miget (59:07):
I'm gonna try and
get there with you this year,
man.
Yeah,
Trent Manning (59:10):
do it man.
Tyler Miget (59:11):
I
Trent Manning (59:11):
Anybody else
interested in C Tim?
Feel free to reach out to me orG-C-S-A-A or, I mean, definitely
reach out to GCSA, but
Tyler Miget (59:22):
yeah.
Trent Manning (59:22):
some moral
support, reach out to me or any
other CAM that you know, and Imean, we're all willing to give
you some moral support and somepointers I do think it's, you
know, it is really nervewracking.
When you're getting your shopready and going through the
rubric, and I think you build upa lot of stuff.
(59:43):
I mean, I'm guilty.
I build up a lot of stuff in myhead and I help, you know,
Tyler Miget (59:49):
You got it right
here?
Trent Manning (59:50):
stuff.
Yeah.
You know,
Tyler Miget (59:52):
Yeah.
Trent Manning (59:52):
but I was still
like, I'm not gonna pass this.
It's easy to work it up in, inyour mind and make it worse than
what it is.
It's really not that bad.
Tyler Miget (01:00:01):
Okay.
Trent Manning (01:00:02):
reach out to any
other CTM and we'll be glad to
help you out.
Tyler Miget (01:00:08):
Will do.
No doubt.
Trent Manning (01:00:11):
tell the
listeners how they may get in
touch with you.
Tyler Miget (01:00:16):
