Reimagining Our Faith

After the resurrection, Jesus appears to the disciples—but unfortunately Thomas isn’t there. When the others tell him, “We have seen the Lord,” Thomas refuses to believe them. He doesn’t fake belief to fit in. Thomas doesn’t nod along to avoid awkwardness. No, instead Thomas says, “Unless I see… I will not believe.”

In the Upper Room, Jesus tells His disciples, “You know the way to the place where I am going.” The room is silent. Everyone is confused. No one understands what Jesus means. Why is Jesus going somewhere? And how would they know not only the place where Jesus was going but also the way to get to that place? As we read through the Bible, it is interesting to note that Philip is always listed fifth among the disciples. He is always the first person listed in the “second tier” of disciples. Now, Philip wasn’t a leader like Peter, James, or John. He wasn’t outspoken. He wasn’t decisive. But we do hear his voice a few times in the gospels.
