As Julie Basello, I'm inviting you on a journey where we push past the paralysis of our comfort zones and face the fears that bar us from transformative growth. Ever felt your heart race at the thought of leaving the familiar behind, even when it’s clear it no longer serves you? That's the essence of crossing 'fear bridges,' and in this episode, I draw from my own unexpected phobia of driving over bridges to illustrate the potent changes that lie in wait when we dare to confront the things that scare us.

Strap in as we navigate the tumultuous yet exhilarating road of personal reinvention. Witness the pivotal moment I chose to step away from a job that failed to recognize my worth, and how this decision illuminates the path for others searching for the courage to demand more for themselves. I stand at the crossroads of uncertainty and potential, armed with my experiences as a content manager and creator, ready to invite you into the roller coaster of life's continuous evolution. Together, let's embrace the reassurance that even when the road is uncharted, the journey is rich with opportunity and growth.

safety isn't safe at all.

(01:24):
Okay, so you've stuck aroundthrough that.
So let me tell you what I meanby fear bridges.
As humans, we sometimes createwhat we think is a safe space
for ourselves in life.
That safe space is calm, it'sstatus quo, it's familiar.
But what if safe spaces weren'tsafe but instead they were an
illusion that lulls us into afalse sense of safety and
security.

(01:44):
Our same old safe bets yes, I'mquoting the great Amy Winehouse
.
Here are things we perceivewon't let us down.
Here's what else they won't do.
They won't force us out of ourcomfort zone, they won't propel
us to elevate ourselves and theywon't inspire us to try to be
the best version of ourselves wecan be.
Indulge me in my bridgemetaphor.

(02:05):
If you don't mind, I'll try tomake it make sense In real life.
I have a phobia that's become apart of my life in the last few
years.
Prior to the past few years, itwasn't even a thing for me, but
now it's become a very bigthing in my life.
I've somehow developed a fearof driving over bridges.
As someone who has driven inmany states and countries over
the course of my life, I'mreally struggling with this, as
you can imagine.

(02:25):
I mean everywhere we go,there's always a damn bridge.
I've driven out of my way justto not cross a bridge, because
now bridges bring me into aguaranteed panic attack.
It's scary and it's awful.
When I use the term fear bridge,I'm referring to the fact that
we are all afraid of something.
You may drive over bridgesseamlessly, but fear other
things.
u y of drive family orfriends, loss of a spouse going

(02:48):
broke, struggling.
We all have things we're afraidof.
Some of us have fears that areeven debilitating to some extent
, like my fear of bridges.
They make us go out of our waynot to experience the fear.
They make us act in a manner ofavoidance of pain rather than
seeking the goals we really want.
If you let fear drive the bus, most likely the bus is going to
stay in park and not go anywhere.
So what are we supposed to doif we crave a new start and we

(03:10):
struggle with our fears?
In my example, I drive out ofmy way to not cross a bridge.
Crossing a bridge would get mecloser to where I'm going in
less time, but I go out of myway because I fear having a
panic attack on a bridge.
What's on the other side ofyour fear bridge that you really
want and what's keeping youfrom crossing over to it?
These are interesting questionsto me.
Maybe they are to you too.
They're definitely worthexploring.

(03:32):
Before I go further in thisepisode, I'm going to share
something very honest and verypersonal with you.
It's directly related to thefear bridge.
I've been talking aboutreinvention for a while now and
trying to help people see pasttheir fears and their roadblocks
so they can stop stoppingthemselves and move into a space
they really want to be in,whether it's in life or at work
or wherever.
I've experienced the pain andjoy of reinventing myself quite

(03:55):
a few times in my life and, asthings often go, I'm embarking
on yet another reinventionjourney that was pretty much
forced upon me.
I recently had to make a choiceat my job.
That really wasn't much of achoice.
You may know what I'm talkingabout the kind of choice in
quotations that feels like it'salready been made for you but
that people still act like is anactual choice.
This was something I wasn'tactually planning on.

(04:17):
I'd been at my job for a longtime and I loved what I did at
the company I was at and I putmy heart into everything I
worked on, thank you.

(04:47):
I had to make the decision towork for people who didn't see
my value or move into the nextchapter, as scary as the next
chapter is.
I would be doing myself a greatdisservice if I stuck around
with people who didn't value mesimply so I could collect a
paycheck.
There's really no paycheckworth disrespecting yourself or
allowing others to disrespectyou and your skills, abilities
and talents.
The other thing is that we aresetting examples for ourselves

(05:08):
all the time.
I always like to tell my femaledirect reports that there's a
little girl somewhere that'slooking at you, watching what
you do, and saying to herself Iwant to be like her someday.
You have to think about who andhow you want to be.
Those choices are important.
Character is important.
So I made the choice, and here Iam speaking to you from a place
I haven't been in a very longtime and, if I'm being straight

(05:31):
up and honest with you, my firstreaction was to be afraid.
Then I thought about it andfigured this was a great
opportunity.
The last time I was in thisposition, I didn't have nearly
the skill set that I have today,or the experience or the drive.
Well, maybe I did have thedrive, because I've always been
intensely driven, but thearsenal of skills I have at my
disposal today far exceeds whereI was before.

(05:51):
So I decided to put myproverbial money where my mouth
is.
I talk about navigatingreinvention, with its positives,
its perils and its pitfalls, and now I'll be speaking to you
very personally about my ownreinvention journey.
I want to show you that thiscan be done successfully at any
age.
I want you to come along withme through this journey.
It may not be the easiest thingI've ever done, but at the end

(06:13):
of the day, it can and will bedone, and I will come out on the
other side in a different buthopefully better place than I am
today.
Get ready for quite a fewepisodes throughout my journey.
Get ready for me to show youthe ups and downs and the
everything in between.
You may get to know me betterthan you ever wanted to, but
maybe, just maybe, when I comeout on the other side, you'll
understand that you can and willbe able to do this too.

(06:36):
There may be compromises to bemade along the way, but one
thing I will never compromise ismyself and my value.
There are a lot of thingsstacked against me in this
journey I find myself on.
Let me paint a picture for you.
I'm a content manager andcontent creator.
I've been an operations manageras well, and I've been a
manager most of my career.
I work in marketing.
I'm not in my 20s or even in my30s.

(06:57):
The job market is prettyterrible right now.
Companies are laying people offleft and right and I happen to
work in brand marketing, one ofthe first departments to be cut
during cost-cutting measures atcompanies.
I'm not independently wealthy.
I just got on my feet after mylast reinvention, which was just
a few years ago.
It all sounds a bit ominous onpaper.
It sounds ominous to me.

(07:18):
As I say it, I'm sure you'relistening, thinking wow, julie,
that really does not sound likea great set of circumstances and
, quite frankly, it really isn't.
If I didn't know me, I would besaying girl, what are you doing
?
But I do know me.
Because of knowing myself, I'mmaking a concerted effort to
focus on the things that arestacked in my favor.
So let's talk about those.

(07:41):
I am multi-skilled.
I'm actually not ajack-of-all-trades and master of
none.
I'm an experienced corporateand portrait photographer.
I have videography shooting andediting skills.
I'm a certified and experiencedsocial media manager.
I have a degree in English andI've written blogs and short
form content for over a decade.
Professionally, I've worked onprojects as an editor and
copywriter.
I'm a podcast host and podcastproducer who has not only
produced this podcast but alsopodcasts for other companies.

(08:03):
I do voiceover work.
I'm also a very skilled managerwith a history of people
development under my belt.
I have a history of managingteams and developing people in
their careers.
When you work for me, you leavewith better opportunities and
you're ready for them.
I can do a lot of things.
I'm also extremely creative, organized and can read and
replicate brand voice formultiple brands.

(08:24):
I'm one of those people who canlearn to do just about anything
if I want to.
I'm driven, I'm confident andI'm not afraid to work hard.
I've worked for many companiessuccessfully.
I've also worked for three ofmy own companies successfully.
I currently run my own contentagency that helps small
businesses with marketing andcontent needs.
I'm afraid, but I'm notparalyzed with fear.
That's an important statement,so let me say it again I am

(08:47):
afraid, but I am not paralyzedwith fear.
Fear will motivate me, but itwill not drive the bus for me.
I'm cautious, but I am stillwilling to try new things to see
where they lead.
I'm an adventurer.
I'm not afraid to makedecisions and I'm not afraid to
stand behind my decisions.
I'm not afraid to be wrong, because mistakes help you learn
and understanding.
That is Management 101.

(09:07):
You don't grow until you learnhow to be humble and how to be
wrong.
My, you don't grow until youlearn how to be humble and how
to be wrong.
My point is I'm open to any andall solutions.
I feel that the universe willpresent opportunities I'm meant
for.
I just need to put myself outthere in as many places as I can
.
If I'm meant to work a job, options will present themselves.
If I'm meant to focus onBacillo Media, freelance
opportunities will presentthemselves.

(09:27):
One way or the other, I'll beshown the way.
I just need to put one foot infront of the other, grab my tool
bag of skills, talents andabilities and keep it moving.
The reason I'm saying all thisis not to show you how great I
am, because that is not whatthis is about.
It's about you taking the timeto make your own list of what's
in your toolkit in terms of yourskills and experiences.
When you start to think aboutit and write it down, you will

(09:50):
be amazed at how well amazingyou actually are.
I'll make one promise to youI'll share the real deal with
you.
I will tell you what I'mthinking and feeling as I go
through this.
You can take whatever works foryou, for my information and my
journey.
I just want you to at least bemoved to really think about your
own reinvention journey.
If I had my choice, I would wantmy journey to inspire you

(10:12):
enough to change whatever youwant to change.
For me, the time is now andthere are no dress rehearsals.
I want you to see thatoperating under the gun is not
the end of the world.
I know I have some lofty goals.
I wouldn't be me if I didn't,but I think if I can embark on
this journey, forced or not thenyou can too.
But don't let me just tell youabout it.
I'm prepared to show you too.
Get ready for future episodesoutlining what I'm working on,

(10:38):
what's happening and everythingthat is going on as I navigate
this journey.
My mom used to say this tooshall pass, and she was right
