It was in 15th century that Kabir established a separate identity of the Nirgun stream of Bhakti, with the worship of a formless God as against the Sagun stream of Ram Bhakti and Krishna Bhakti . He was a disciple of Ramananda. Kabir can rightly be called the originator of the medieval school of Nirgun Bhakti of a formless God. The beginnings made by Kabir were carried further by Nank, Raidas and Dadu. Kabir's early life is shrouded in mystery, which has contributed more to his popularity as there were always tussles over the ownership of Kabir amongst the Hindus and Muslims, which was in a sense an anachronism, since it was against theses very notions that Kabir campaigned for. According to legend he was born to a hindu widow, who in order to hide her shame abandoned this child and it was adopted by a weaver couple Neeru and Neema, who were Muslims. According to legend, Kabir was found in a lotus leaf, although only some aspects can be substantiated as historical truths.
