Nund Rishi or Shaikh Nūr al-Dīn Nūrānī, revered and remembered by most Kashmiris as the ‘Alamdār (flag-bearer) of Kashmir, is one of the most significant figures in the history of religion and literature in Kashmir. Nund Rishi, as Nur-ud-Din is also called, was born in 1378 AD to a tribe of shepherds in what is today the Kulgam district of south Kashmir. He travelled to different parts of Kashmir as his Rishi movement, with its emphasis on monism and austerity, gained large adherence and brought more and more people into the fold of Islam. Nund Rishi started the mystic of an order of the Sufi saints, called the Rishi order.He is also the creator of Shruks, a Kashmiri variation of the Sanskrit shloka, which engages with the idea of negative theology
