Get ready for a masterclass in rapid growth, strategic leadership, and the invaluable lessons learned on the path to building, scaling, and selling a business.
The episode starts with Steven talking about his upbringing, growing up in Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York which are places that have higher percentages of Italians in them than any other states in the US, which means some powerful families reside there.
For Steven, that meant always being surrounded by these guys, they'd show up with their cigars and Cadillacs and he didn't think this was a childhood that was any different from others. He always thought that his father just had some really good businesses and from time to time, Uncle Vinnie or Uncle Joe would come over.
That was until he was 12 years old, as he was about to walk from his house to his school, when the FBI swarmed the front of their house and they seized all of the papers on his father's desk, only to find out that his dad was involved in the mafia doing money laundering because he grew up in that field.
Steven talks about how because of this, he was able to see the good side of entrepreneurship as he was always being sent on errands to do things for his dad's legitimate businesses but he also saw how it changed his life completely.
Visiting his dad in penitentiary and seeing him all locked up, how he had to get patted down just to see his dad and not even be able to touch him or give him a hug, it changed him in a way that he ended up retreating into himself and became more of an introvert.
