Meet the Host: Jeff Bass, General Contractor and Owner of Remodel Contracting

What drives a successful contractor beyond the bottom line? In this revealing conversation, Jeff Bass pulls back the curtain on the philosophy that's made Remodel Contracting a trusted name throughout the DFW Metro area.

At his core, Jeff identifies as a servant first and a businessman second. "I am a servant at heart," he explains, detailing how this mindset shapes every aspect of his company's approach. Whether guiding homeowners through transforming outdated spaces, creating entirely new ones, or navigating the often-frustrating insurance claim process after damage, Jeff positions himself as the client's advocate and representative. This approach has allowed him to grow from a small operation into a multi-division company with dedicated teams handling residential projects, roofing, and commercial work.

Beyond his contracting business, Jeff reveals the many hats he wears—third-term city councilman for Garland, former restaurant owner, passionate home chef specializing in smoked meats and homemade pasta, and devoted family man with a 20-year marriage. Rather than traditional advertising, his business thrives almost exclusively on relationships, referrals, and community connections through his chamber of commerce involvement. The conversation offers a masterclass in how authentic service can drive business growth while creating meaningful impact both in homes and communities. "I like to keep business coming in and keeping my guys busy and keeping my clients happy," Jeff shares, demonstrating how serving others remains at the heart of his success story.

investment they have, which istheir house.
Whether that dream be to build, update an existing area that's
maybe got a little age to it, orgetting their house back to

(01:28):
normal after an insurance claimsuch as water damage or hail
damage, it's very important torepresent my clients.
I am a servant at heart and Ibelieve in serving my clients to
their best interest and to mybest ability, and so, whether
that be helping them with adesign process, helping them

(01:49):
come up with what ideas theyneed for their house and seeing
that through to fruition, orwhether that be being their
advocate and working with theinsurance company on an
insurance claim, I want to bethere to represent my clients in
the best light possible.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Wow, well, that sounds amazing, jeff.
And when you're not busyrunning your business, what do
you like to do for fun?

Speaker 3 (02:13):
For fun.
I have a servant heart, so I amon city council.
I'm a city councilrepresentative here in Garland
where I live, and I've actuallybeen on my third term doing that
now, and I love representing myconstituents in matters
concerning the city.
Aside from that, I love to cook.
I formerly had barbecuerestaurants, but now I've got
two smokers in my backyard so Ilike smoking meats.

(02:35):
I love cooking for my family.
I've got my wife of 20 yearsand we have one teenage son, so
I try to keep up with him, andI've got two dogs that I take
care of as well, so just a busy, fulfilling lifestyle.
I'm happiest helping take careof others and, like I said,
cooking I love cooking, sothat's one way that I serve as

(02:58):
well.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
What's your favorite dish to cook, Jeff?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Well, I grew up working in the restaurant
business, mainly in Italianrestaurants and barbecue
restaurants, so those are kindof two passions that I have.
Probably the number one thing Ilike doing is I like smoking
ribs and smoking whole turkeys.
Aside from that, makinghomemade pastas, I've really
recently gotten deep into makinghomemade raviolis.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, that sounds delicious.
Let's go ahead and switch gearsfor a second.
Now we know marketing is key toany business success.
How do you market your business?

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Most of my marketing is through my personal network
and referrals.
We get most of our businessthrough repeat customers or
referrals from repeat customers.
Don't do any physicaladvertising of any sort.
I'm also a member of theGarland Chamber of Commerce.
I was on the board for that forfour years and I still chair

(03:57):
multiple committees for theChamber of Commerce, so I do a
lot of networking through thatas well.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Wow.
So, jeff, you are a very busyperson, as we can certainly tell
In your own words.
Why are you doing this?

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Honestly, I like to serve.
I also I'm on the board formultiple nonprofit organizations
.
I have the luxury of having a.
My wife has a good job, so shetakes care of the family bills
and what I do is it allows me tobe out and serve the community.
Before I started doing this, Ihave always had an interest in

(04:37):
remodeling and have hadinvestment properties in the
past and remodeled properties inthe past, including my own my
own and so I saw a need in thecommunity for proper
representation for clients, steering them in the right
direction, giving them theinformation they need to make
the best decisions they can ontheir projects.
I got into this throughinsurance claim processes, and

(05:00):
so that's really how I got into.
It is basically to be anadvocate for my clients with
insurance companies, and thatjust grew from there into.
I now have three divisions Ihave my residential, I have
roofing and I have commercial.
I like to be an advocate for myclients and make sure that
someone's listening to whattheir needs are and someone's
helping them with that process.

(05:21):
I have a roofing team, I havetwo commercial teams and I have
three residential teams, and Ijust like to keep those guys
busy all the time.
You know they've got familiesto feed too, so I just like to
keep business coming in andkeeping my guys busy and keeping
my clients happy.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Love it, Jeff.
We'll catch you in the nextepisode.
