Ready for an adventure? Join Camille, and her husband, Bryce, as they travel on down the road toward Texas and the upcoming solar eclipse. Things get off to a bumpy start, to say the least, with unexpected delays in getting her father moved into his condo. You’ve heard about this ongoing, less than smooth, operation in previous episodes. Well, it’s improved, some. But there’s always right field, you know. Camille will fill you in.

But, after a few more delays, off they go.  Cats, sunshine, rainbows (and lollipops?), and then bam! Ah, but Camille tells it so well. So, buckle up and get ready for her unique perspective of things when the situation is less than perfect but not as bad as it could be.

This is the first part of her multi-part Travel with Me series where she takes us with her on the road to a lifetime event like no other and all the excitement along the way.

In episode 96, we embark on anexciting journey.

(00:04):
To go see the solar eclipse.
This is part one of my road tripwith me series.
You're listening to the remotework retirement show.
I'm your host, Camille Attell.
And this is the only show thathelps semi retirees figure out
the remote work options.
I believe the remote work is thenew retirement plan and that

(00:26):
many retirees have both theability and desire to work, how
they want so they can live howthey want.
Let's dig into today'sepisode....
Well, hello again, if you are areturning listener or welcome if
you're a first time listener.
I am coming to you straight frommy travel trailer.

(00:47):
Dinette booth.
And that kicks off the topic fortoday, which is the road trip
with me series.
I've done this.
One other time.
But this time I'll do amulti-part series.
As we head towards the solareclipse.
So couple things I want to tellyou before we dive in.
Number one I'm absolutelyexhausted.

(01:09):
So.
I was even debating whether ornot to record the podcast today,
but I thought, you know what, wouldn't it be cool if you just
got the real behind the scenes, look, instead of the curated
produced podcasts, you couldreally truly journey with me.
As I dragged myself halfwayacross the country to go see the

(01:30):
solar eclipse.
So that that's number one.
I'm a little tired.
You might hear it in my voice.
You might not.
If you aren't familiar with howI do these podcasts.
The second thing I'll tell youis because I'm on the road and
in my travel trailer, I don'thave all my equipment with me to
do the podcast.
Normally I have a really goodmicrophone.

(01:50):
Today I'm using my headset.
I think it will be okay.
But if you hear some strangenoises, just know.
It's my headset and not a fancymic normally.
Uh, if you come back and listento other shows or go back and
listen to old shows, you'llprobably hear a slight
difference in the audio.
The last thing I'll tell you isI had.

(02:12):
I had planned to do this seriesalong with the route we were
taking.
But if you, if you travel muchor if you own an RV or some kind
of a, if you're nomadic, I guessI should say in any way, you
probably know that travel plans.
Often get.
Thwarted, right?
Like the best laid plans can beimpacted.

(02:35):
And so that's where I'm going tostart this story today is that
our plans were impacted andthat's pushed us back.
So I don't have an exciting, Imean, it's exciting.
I actually have some excitingstuff to share with you, but I
thought that I would do these.
These, uh, episodes the seriesbased on some of the locations I
would be at.
That didn't happen.

(02:56):
So I'm just going to tell youthe down and dirty.
Of what happened on part one.
And by the way, we are headed toTexas.
So we drove from California.
And we are headed to Texas.
And we made it as far asArizona.
In two days.
Okay.
So let me just tell you what'sgoing on here.
Let me back up and tell youthat.

(03:19):
All the whole month of March.
Was supposed to be a month ofgetting ready for this trip.
I have this travel trailer thatI purchased last year.
I wanted to get it out ofstorage.
My plan was to just test all thesystems, take it out.
Make sure everything wasworking.
I also wanted to introduce mytwo cats.

(03:41):
Mo and Parker.
I wanted to introduce them tothe travel trailer so that they
could get used to it.
Now Parker Parker used to travelwith, with us back in the day
when we were my husband, Bryceand I were traveling in a motor
home.
From 2016.
To 2020.
And a little bit in 2021.

(04:01):
Okay.
So we had been traveling thatwhole time.
Parker was with us that wholetime.
And he is a road cat.
He loves the road.
He doesn't love the driving, buthe loves being at camp sites.
He's friendly.
He gets out and he walks around.
He loves laying in patches ofsun.
He just likes it.

(04:21):
I think he's a real adventurecat.
Now we didn't have Mo duringthat period of our lives, we got
her a little later and then wetook her out on the road in
2021.
We did one trip in 2022 and Moabsolutely hates road trips.
I mean on this particular roadtrip.
I don't think I've seen her comeout from under the blankets in

(04:42):
like 24 hours.
So I'm a little bit worriedabout Mo not so much about
Parker.
And again, my whole plan inMarch was to really test all of
this stuff out so I could workout the kinks.
And Bryce and I, uh, even evenwent and invested in a little
bit of solar, although investedis that I shouldn't even use

(05:04):
that word because.
A lot of the folks that I knowin the RV community, they really
invest in solar, like hugepanels.
You know, hundreds, if notthousands of dollars, we didn't
do that.
I just bought.
Like two panels off of Amazonand we're going to try to hook
it up.
We don't even have it hooked upyet.
So you might be wondering, well, what happened then in March, if

(05:27):
you had.
A plan for March.
Why are you saying in thisepisode that none of that
happened?
Well, if you've been followingalong.
Uh, in the last couple ofepisodes.
Then you may have heard me talkabout how I was helping my
father buy a condo.
And I was trying to get himmoved in.
The idea was we were going toget him moved in.

(05:48):
In February.
So that I would have all ofMarch to focus on this trip.
Well, that did not happenbecause again, the best laid
plans.
Often go awry.
And so what happened with thewhole condo situation is.
A 30 day, escrow turned intosomething like an 80 day escrow.
I won't go into all the gorydetails, but it was not pretty.

(06:12):
I had to throw myself at everydifferent version of loan.
Uh, loan scenarios and borrowingscenarios.
And because we're, we're movinghim into a retirement community.
The retirement community has itsown set of rules.
And high level here's whathappened.
The lender approved me with oneversion.

(06:35):
But the retirement communityrejected that version.
And then the opposite happened.
The retirement communityapproved me for one type of
scenario.
But the lender would not.
So I had to work so hard.
To come up with so manydifferent creative ways.
To get this loan closed.

(06:56):
And.
Yes, it closed.
It closed about a week before Iwas leaving.
And then we had to move my dad.
Right.
My dad who is almost 81 yearsold.
And God bless him has about 80years of stuff.
In his, in his, where he used tolive.
We had to figure out how to.

(07:17):
Uh, encourage him.
I'll use the word, encourage.
I encouraged him to let go ofthose things and downsize into a
one bedroom condo.
A very nice one bedroom condo.
I will add with plenty of space.
But it's not a three-bedroomhouse.
And he does not have a garage.
Okay.
So if you could just imagine, and I think.

(07:38):
Some folks listening can relateto this because I know.
Many many people.
Have gone through somethingsimilar with relocating a parent
or a family member.
And I know that I am not theonly one.
Um, but this was like just acomedy of errors all around.
And I'll say one more thingabout this.

(07:58):
I'm I'm kind of nervous.
I'm actually really nervousabout this.
I.
I'm going to say I moved my dadin, but I should not say that.
Because then when I went to theleasing office or what I thought
was the residence center.
To get him registered, get hiscar approved and get him his
membership card.

(08:19):
They told me that I had to drawup a lease with my own father.
And then I had to submit thatlease to the HOA board.
For them to approve him as atenant tenant.
Which none of that was disclosedto me.
Before the law before thepurchase.
If I had known that I would nothave pushed so hard.
To purchase this property.

(08:40):
Because now it puts me at risk.
It puts him at risk.
So.
At the time of this recording,we're still in the pending
status.
Oh, my goodness.
Please pray for me.
Send good vibes, whatever, whatever it is that you do.
Please.
I just want this to get approvedso that my dad can get some
peace and some rest.

(09:01):
Because if he does not getapproved, I honestly don't know
what I'm going to do.
I don't know if I'm going tohave to move him out.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Anyway.
So all that happened before.
We were supposed to hit theroad.
So none of the stuff that I wasplanning to do with my travel
trailer, did I get to do inMarch?
Uh, it was just chaos, honestly.

(09:23):
So somehow in the same week, Iwas able to move my father and
get the travel trailer out ofstorage.
I get it packed.
Um, Bryce and I worked feverish.
Really on getting all thesystems together and loading it
up and so many different things.
So many hurdles to jump through.
But we did it.
However, we were delayed by oneday.

(09:45):
Part of that was because ofeverything happening with my
dad.
The other part of that is Brycehas had the good sense to look
at the weather conditions wherewe were headed.
So one of our, well, the secondday we were going to be headed
to Arizona.
He saw a big storm come in withlike two to three inches of

(10:05):
snow.
So he decided, you know what,it's better that we leave a day
later.
Give us one more day to pack onemore day to get my dad settled.
We'll leave a day later.
And then we'll bypass that stormbecause the storm will have
melted by then.
So we thought.
Okay.
So now we're into the actualroad trip part of this episode.

(10:28):
So we get on the road.
We drive.
We believe California, SouthernCalifornia.
We were going to go to Loughlin, but we decided not to go over
any mountain passes because.
Our car that pulls the traveltrailer is just a smidge small.
In theory, our car should bepowerful enough to tow the

(10:50):
travel trailer we have, which isa Gulf stream.
And it's around 3,600 pounds.
But the.
It doesn't leave us a lot ofextra room to pack and have and
carry extra weight.
We, we really had to be diligentabout how much weight we
carried.
And what we put in.
Secretly.
I was really happy about thisbecause my husband, who's not in

(11:14):
the rig right now with me.
Um, he is notorious foroverpacking.
You know, if you want to bringone or two books on a trip, he
wants to bring 10.
You know, you need to bring twopairs of shoes on a trip.
He'll bring like four or five.
Right?
So the fact that we had totravel light was great.
Because I can travel.
I have no problem with that.

(11:35):
And when he goes backpacking,he, he goes backpacking in the
Sierras where he used to quite abit.
He can travel light.
But I think he sees an RV ortravel trailer the way he sees a
house like, oh, well there'splenty of room.
So let's just fill it up.
And I'm more like, no one, Ibought one pair of shoes.
No joke.
Just one, because they're thekind that you just slip into so

(11:57):
I can use them for slippers andI can use them for walking and I
can use them for everythingelse.
I brought.
Uh, two sets of silverware thatare not even silver.
They're like a M.
Some they're not plastic, butthere are another material that.
I wouldn't say they disintegrateor you throw them away, but they
will keep for a long time.

(12:18):
Right?
I'm that kind of person.
I'm the minimalist.
Okay.
So we got everything in, but wedecided not to go over those
mountain passes just on day one, because we didn't know how the
car would perform.
I should also mention we havetaken the travel trailer out one
other time.
We did a trip back in November.
Two Borrego Springs inCalifornia.

(12:39):
And.
That trip was a good test, butwe did not pack the travel
trailer with much of anything.
So we really didn't know how ourcar would perform when this was
truly packed.
So we get on the road and wedecided, instead of going to
Loughlin, we would go toneedles, California.
And then that would position usto then get to either, Holbrook

(13:02):
Arizona or Winslow Arizona.
We were kind of debating betweenthe two.
We had never been throughWinslow before on our other road
trips.
And of course you have to seeWinslow.
I mean, It's famous.
Right?
It's the song, which I can'tsing right now.
So we decided to go forHolbrook, which was a big, big
day on day two.
So day one actually was reallygood.

(13:25):
I mean, it was raining reallyhard, but.
It, we got through it.
We got to the campsite, reallynice campsite in Needles
California.
All those great desert sounds.
The birds were chirping.
And then right after we pulledin.
There was a huge, beautifulrainbow right across the sky.

(13:45):
And then there was a secondrainbow right above it.
I saw a double rainbow.
I don't think I've ever seen adouble rainbow before.
My husband tells me these thingshappen all the time, but I've
never seen one.
So for me, it was pretty darnmagical.
So that was day one..
So day two was a real journeybecause.

(14:06):
Remember, this was the day thatwe were supposed to bypass the
snowstorms in Arizona.
Well, new storms came in.
And so as we were going over acouple of passes, we got the,
the hardest.
Hale slash grapple slash slushedthing you've ever seen.
I mean, maybe you've seen worseactually, because I live in

(14:28):
California.
So what do I know?
But this, it was ferocious.
I mean, this came in so fast andso heavy.
And I got really, really nervouson the roads because we were
going over these passes.
So you go up, you go down, youknow, And at one point, my
husband said, we need to pulloff.
Now when Bryce says we need topull off, you know, It's a bad

(14:49):
situation.
He's really good under pressure.
He's a great driver.
He's he's very much in control,so I knew things were bad.
So we pull off.
Many people pulled off to theside of the road.
But many people didn't and carswere just flying, flying,
flying.
So at one point I said, wereally should get out of the

(15:09):
car.
And I was like, whoa, it's thatbad?
He's like these other cars aregoing very fast and the roads
are slick and I'm like, oh gosh.
So now I'm terrified we get outof the car.
I'm like climbing up a hill inthe snow because I'm like, well,
if someone hits our car or anyother car, it's going to slide
into the side.
So I'm getting up this hill.
So I'm climbing up a snowbank.

(15:31):
It's like 33 degrees.
I mean, my one pair of shoes, Ididn't wear socks that day.
Of course.
And you know, I'm barely dressedfor this stuff.
So.
Luckily that storm settled.
After about 20 minutes, we gotso lucky.
And then we thought we were outof it, but of course.
We hit another similar storm.

(15:53):
We had to pull off again.
This time, we were able to makeit to an exit.
We pulled off.
And my husband checked theweather.
We looked at the map.
I'm really into these radar mapswhere you can see.
How storms move and how quickly.
We had exactly a 20 minutewindow.
To get out of that area beforewe would get socked in by a much

(16:15):
longer storm.
So he's like, we gotta just gofor it.
And we were only, like, at thatpoint we were only 10 miles away
from our destination.
But of course still atelevation, so still dangerous.
So luckily that 20 minute windowheld up.
We got about.
I want to say about six or sevenmiles in, we were driving really

(16:37):
slow.
And then it started to flurryagain that not that heavy hail
slash grapple stuff.
And whew, we got off the freewayand we're able to pull right
into our campsite.
So.
It was, it was intense.
I mean, it started off as sunnyskies and really a nice day with

(16:58):
dry roads.
But it ended with, uh, justthese intense storms.
So here we are.
I'm not going to do anythingtoday.
I'm not going anywhere.
I was going to go see thepetrified forest, but I'm just
going to chill out.
I'm reading a great book calledremarkably bright creatures
about an octopus.
Maybe you've read it.

(17:19):
And I'm drinking coffee sittingin the sun.
And, uh, working of course.
All right.
Well, stay tuned for part two.
Thanks so much for listening.

We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today.
