Now, anxiety isn't wrong.
(00:02):
It's a signal.
It's a symptom.
Just like any other emotion, If you'reangry, the anger is not necessarily wrong.
But what is that anger showing you?
And it's now what we do with that anger, what we do with that anxiety, that will
determine whether we have a good or badbehavior Welcome to Renew and Transform,

(00:46):
I want to talk about dealing with anxiety.
Now, a lot of us deal with anxiety.
It's a pretty.
common emotion and feeling and experiencefor humans, but it is becoming one
of the most debilitating experiences.
In these generations and especiallyin the younger generations.
(01:08):
Now there's a lot of things that causeanxiety, you know, bills, jobs, your
health, kids, relationships, finance, inflation, conflict, international
wars, all kinds of things, politics, purpose, or the lack of purpose.
(01:28):
Now there's a recent study that says twoout of three Americans are anxious or very
anxious, according to this study done.
And another study shows 91 percentof high school and college students
suffer from severe anxiety.
Two out of three Americans reporthaving anxiety or very serious
(01:52):
anxiety, according to a late study.
There's another study that saysabout 91 percent of high school
and college students deal withanxiety from stress of schooling.
Another article mentioned that thisis the most anxious generation.
And why is that?
(02:12):
You know, anxiety isn't a sin.
It's not wrong.
It's not bad.
It's not even good.
It's not good or bad, necessarily.
Now, you might think it's bad.
We have this idea that it is bad.
It's a bad thing.
It's a bad feeling.
It's a bad emotion.
But I believe that emotionsare not necessarily bad.
But they give us information and dataabout something that is going on beneath
(02:37):
that surface, beneath that surface level.
We're just touching the icebergthere, the tip of the iceberg.
But we need to go deeper tosee, well why, why am I anxious?
Now, anxiety isn't wrong.
It's a signal.
It's a symptom.
Just like any other emotion, If you'reangry, the anger is not necessarily wrong.
(03:00):
But what is that anger showing you?
And it's now what we do with that anger, what we do with that anxiety, that
will determine whether we have a goodor bad behavior now anxiety is similar
to a check engine light of a car It'stelling you something take a look here.
Check something check within yourself.
Check your heart check your mindWhy is this causing me anxiety?
(03:23):
Why am I lacking peace?
Now, to bring it to a powerful scripturethat I constantly remind myself, because
I do still deal with anxiety often, andI'm working through it, and these are what
I use, a couple scriptures that I use tokind of refocus my mind, because usually
when I'm anxious, it's because I let mymind get hijacked by something outside
(03:46):
of me, outside of my control, and outsideof my realm of what I can do right now.
So let's go to a 1 Peter 5:7,"Give all your worries and cares
to God for he cares about you."
Take it to God.
And you're going to hear me talk aboutthis a little bit more later, but take it
(04:06):
to God, whatever you're thinking about, take it to God in prayer and stillness.
Another one that I love is 2 Timothy.
1 (04:13):
7, "For God has not given us a
spirit of fear and timidity, but of
power, love, and self discipline."
Now anxiety is oftentimesdeeply rooted in fear.
Fear that something's going to happen, something with our jobs or bills, our
finances, our family, our relationships, something that I can't control.
(04:35):
I begin to have anxiety andI begin to feed that anxiety.
Another way of putting it, whyI use those specific scriptures.
And there's a bunch.
that tell us not to be fearful ornot to have anxiety or whatnot,
but it's still going to happen.
You're not a robot.
You have human emotions.
That means you're going to havea human experience and you're
(04:57):
going to feel a range of feelings.
Now, anxiety, another way of putting it ispondering or meditating on the negative.
Ruminating on the negative, focusingon the things are either stressing you
out, or making you feel less than, orputting fear in your heart, or making
(05:18):
you doubt yourself, or even doubt God.
Worry is rehearsing,rehearsing the negative.
Rehearsing it in your mind.
When you start to recognize howpowerful your mind is, you can
begin to get power over anxiety.
You think anxiety is, Oh,I'm just an anxious person.
I just have anxiety.
(05:38):
I have anxiety.
Maybe you've been labeled thatby the system that you have
anxiety or you have a disorder.
Well, let me tell youthat that's not permanent.
And we have power over our mind.
We have the ability to focus on thingsand rewire our mind instead of rehearsing
and ruminating on the things that arenegative, that we can't control we
(06:03):
can begin focusing on the good thingsfocusing it on better scriptures,
on books, on videos, on sermons,or music, whatever we need to do to
interrupt that thought pattern thatis keeping us in an anxious state now.
This actually takes skill now ifyou're a really anxious person This
is not going to just happen one timeand you're gonna to be good, and
(06:25):
you're going to be free from anxiety.
But it is possible.
That is the first thing youneed to recognize, that it is
possible to not have anxiety.
And it's also possible to noticeif you do have anxiety, you can
recognize the symptoms in your body.
You could recognize the physiology.
You could recognize that your heartrate increases, your body temperature
changes, your sweat, your palms, your muscle tightness, whatever
(06:48):
physiological responses you have, you can recognize those as alarms, as
signals, like, okay, I need to stop.
Anxiety is a signal to tell you tostop, to pray, and even to praise
God for the things that are goingwell, to really shift that focus.
You can use that anxiety as a trigger topray, to praise God, to find something
(07:13):
to be grateful for, And you canslowly interrupt that pattern and take
yourself out of that anxious rumination.
When we're anxious, while wemeditate on those negative
things, we are training ourselves.
We're training our brain to findmore things to make us anxious.
We are training ourselves to stay inthis habit where we find more things
(07:38):
That might cause us more anxiety.
When we focus on the things thatare negative, our brain begins
to search for those thingsbecause it becomes used to it.
But the same thing happens whenwe think about positive things and
change our focus on the good things.
Now it's an interesting part of thebrain called the reticular activating
(07:59):
system and it begins to search.
It looks for things based on howyou program your mind to look.
The more grateful you are about something.
The more your mind will search for thingsto be grateful for, and then vice versa.
And the same thing works the other way.
Now, if you're not familiar with Dr.
Caroline Leaf, she's a Very prominentneuroscientist and she, uh, is a
(08:24):
lot smarter on neuroplasticity andreshaping the mind, refocusing the mind.
She has a lot of great books, butthere's one thing she put out that
said 12 minutes of focused prayer.
Catch this, 12 minutes of focusedprayer over an 8 week period can change
your brain to such an extent thatit can be measured on a brain scan.
(08:49):
Now this is not just.
philosophy at this point.
There is scientific evidence to prove it.
There's equipment, medical equipmentthat can measure your brain activity.
12 minutes of focus prayer over 8 weeks.
Can show a difference in yourbrain activity through brain scans.
(09:10):
So this is not just an idea.
This has been proven now.
You are the potter of your mind.
You get to shape your mind by whatyou focus on, but what you think
about and what you put into your mind.
Again, 2nd Timothy 1.
7 For God has not given us aspirit of fear and timidity, but of
(09:31):
power, love, and self discipline.
So with that spirit of God, Wehave to self discipline, right?
We discipline our mind.
Because we have that power, wecan discipline our mind on the
love of God, and we will not bein fear, and we will not be timid.
You have to break the cycle.
(09:52):
If there's one takeaway, you can break the cycle.
Shape the pot so it can be filledwith the good things, filled
with wisdom, with scripture, with love, from knowledge of God.
You have the power to shape thatinstead of dumping garbage in it and
leaving it in there Focus on the goodfocus on love focus on the power of
(10:16):
God to help you Change your mind ifthis can help you when you notice
anxiety Like I said before, take it toGod, take it to God, take it to God.
When you notice that I tell myselfwhen I'm, when I'm feeling anxious
and I just know my body is justtense, I think, take it to God.
(10:36):
First Peter 5, 7, cast all youranxiety to God for he cares about you.
All of it.
Take it to God.
But what does that look like?
How do I do that?
Sometimes we just have to be humbleenough to come to God and say, I don't
know what to do, but my eyes are on you.
(10:59):
I don't know what to think, what to say, what to do.
My eyes are on you.
Once you start to focus on God, He'llbegin to reveal things to your heart.
He'll begin to reveal to you, maybethe right scriptures, maybe the right
activities, the right workouts, theright music, the right thing to do
(11:23):
to interrupt and break that cycle.
The longer you stay in that cycle, Themore challenging it is to interrupt it,
but because our minds are malleable, because God designed our mind so
intricately complex that we can renew it,we can transform it by what we focus on.
(11:45):
Anxiety is not a death sentence, even if you've been diagnosed
clinically, it is not a deathsentence, but it is leading to death.
It is leading to death.
People are committing suicidebecause they cannot defeat anxiety.
And when I say take it to God, notonly take it to God, but God may
(12:07):
reveal who you need in your lifeto really support you because you
were not designed to do it alone.
You were not designed to do lifewithout God, and you were not
designed to do life without others.
So if you're dealing with anxiety, one of the greatest things you can
do is just admit That you need help.
(12:30):
I did.
I still need help.
I need God moment to moment.
There's moments I just sit there.
When I deal with serious anxiety, I,and I know I should be interrupting it.
I should be listening to a book.
I should be listening to music.
I should watch a movie or a sermonor go work out, take a run, get
out of my mind and get into mybody with physical exercise, but
(12:53):
sometimes I just feel overwhelmed.
Sometimes I could be in a fetalposition, just processing, crying.
grieving, feeling, but I don't stay there.
Once I allow myself to feel thosethings, I recognize my need.
Sometimes I can't even, when I take itto God, sometimes it's so simple and it's
(13:15):
just, help me, help me, God, just help me.
I don't know.
Just help me.
That's sometimes the only, onlything I can say and utter is help me.
If it is big enough to make you anxious, then it is big enough to pray about.
Whatever it is, take some time to relaxyour body so you can recognize what
(13:37):
it is that is causing you anxiety.
And if it's causing you anxiety,It's worth praying about.
It's worth sharing with someone you trust.
It's worth communicating.
Support is needed for you becauseI'm feeling anxious because of this.
It's okay.
We all feel anxious at some point.
(13:58):
But this skill of refocusing, gettingsupport, getting feedback from others,
going to God, getting stillness sowe can pray, helps you feel better.
overcome that in the long run.
I love how Craig Groeschel saysthat anxiety is a signal alerting
you to take it to God in prayer.
(14:18):
It's a signal that's tellingyou to pause and pray.
You might get clarity.
You might recognize that whatI'm fearing is out of my control.
What's in my control?
Let me focus on that.
What can I do right now in this moment?
Be still and know that I am God.
Psalms 46 10.
(14:38):
Be still.
Stillness can help you hear Godinstead of muffling him with
your worries, fears, and anxiety.
There's so much noise in the world.
And if you're allowing it to overwhelm youand bombard you and not giving yourself
time to be at peace and still where youcan actually hear God, then you are just
(15:05):
limiting his ability to work through you.
You're stifling God and you'restifling the Holy Spirit.
Even Jesus isolated himself to getclear and to connect in prayer.
If Jesus did it, then I needto do it and you need to do it.
Just remember, for the battleis not yours, it's God.
(15:27):
Take it to God.
Anxiety is a signal to pray and praise.
And it takes faith to praise beforethe blessing, when it's hard,
when you feel anxiety, praise.
That develops your faith, becauseit's not when you want to do it.
We want to praise when everything'sgood, but when we praise when
(15:48):
we're in the middle of thestorm, that develops our faith.
Remember, take it to God.
Try giving it all to Jesus.
You have nothing to lose, but all to gain.
Much love.
I'll see you next time.
Thank you for tuning in.
Be a light and share this withsomeone you love and care about.

(16:11):
And remember, do not conform tothe pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to testand approve what God's will is.
His good, pleasing, and perfect will.
