SPEAKER_00 (00:51):
Let me ask you
something real.
When was the last time youslowed down long enough to
actually look at your life?
Not the cleaned up version, notthe version you show your
friends, but the real you, theparts you avoid, the places you
hide, the thoughts you don'twant to claim as your own.
(01:14):
See, you can learn a lot aboutyour spiritual condition by
paying attention to your mentalcondition, because your life is
always moving in the directionof your strongest thoughts.
If your thinking is sick, yourlife will be sick.
If your thoughts are shaped byGod's truth, your life will
begin to heal from the insideout.
(01:36):
Yeah.
This is not an episode ofcondemnation.
This is an episode oftransformation.
Let's go, boys.
Hey, welcome to RenewedMindsets.
(01:57):
I'm Rick, and I'm so glad you'rehere.
Now let's just start off withscripture today.
Don't copy the behavior andcustoms of this world, but let
God transform you into a newperson by changing the way you
think.
Then you will learn to knowGod's will for you, which is
(02:19):
good and pleasing and perfect.
Your mind is where the battlebegins.
God doesn't start with yourbehavior, He starts with your
thinking.
Because straight living cannotcome out of crooked thinking.
You can't live right if youthink wrong.
Now here are truths that everybeliever needs to grab a hold of
(02:43):
today.
One, two thoughts cannot occupyyour mind at the same time.
They can't.
You have to decide which onestays, whether it's truth or
lies, faith or fear, God's wordor the world's noise, or I could
say the world's nonsense.
(03:03):
Two, your eyes and ears aregateways to your mind and soul.
What you watch, what you read, what you listen to, it shapes
your spiritual appetite.
It changes your cravings.
Proverbs 15, 14 says, a wiseperson is hungry for knowledge
while the fool feeds on trash.
(03:25):
That's the Bible's way.
That's God's way of sayinggarbage in, garbage out.
Now let's be honest.
Most people live mentallymalnourished and spiritually
dehydrated.
They're feeding on the world'strash and wondering why their
life feels empty.
The next thing is that a renewedmind takes intention.
(03:48):
It's not going to happenaccidentally.
It's not going to happencasually.
And it won't happen because youhope it will happen.
You have to choose it.
So throughout this episode,we're going to be talking about
a personal inventory.
It's something that you need todo on your own.
You may need to listen to it asecond time or write down, take
(04:10):
notes this first time.
But a spiritual inventory is afearless examination of what
shapes your mind.
God doesn't expose you toembarrass you, He exposes you to
transform you.
So the first question is howhave you guarded your mind in
the past?
(04:31):
Now sometimes we protectourselves by denying our pain.
We shove it down, we bury it,but denial never heals.
Denial simply delays the freedomthat God wants to give you.
Ask yourself, why is it easierto deny painful thoughts than to
(04:52):
face them?
Be truthful to yourself when youanswer that one.
Second inventory question forrenewing your mind.
What are you filling your mindwith right now?
You're always feeding your mindsomething.
If you don't choose the diet, the world is going to choose it
for you.
Are you consuming harmful media?
(05:14):
Movies, music, books, Facebook,TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat?
I could go on and on and on.
Are you listening to destructivevoices?
Are you living in environmentsthat pull you away from God?
(05:36):
Are you hanging out in placesthat pull you away from God?
Be honest with yourself.
Third question (05:45):
Have you failed
to focus on the positive truths
of Scripture?
Now listen, most believers arespiritually weak because they're
spiritually underfed.
The word of God is not optional.
It's your daily bread.
Just like we eat physical food,we must have God's word every
(06:10):
day.
Lamentations 340.
Instead, let us test and examineour ways.
Let us turn back to the Lord.
The word of God is not optional.
It's not optional.
It's not something that yousprinkle on your day.
(06:31):
It's the foundation of yoursanity.
It's the anchor of yourthoughts.
Test me and know my anxiousthoughts.
Point out anything in me thatoffends you and lead me along
(06:52):
the path of everlasting life.
God already knows your thoughts.
He's not shocked by yourstruggles.
He's not surprised by yourbattles.
He's not surprised at what youdo behind closed doors.
(07:12):
He reveals what's wrong so hecan make it right.
He exposes wounds so that he canheal them.
He lifts things to the surfaceso they don't keep sinking you,
right?
Your mind is not going to renewitself.
It's not.
Renewal requires honesty andsurrender, an examination of
(07:37):
yourself, and a willingness tohear God's truth.
Because when your mind changes, your life changes.
All right, we've talked aboutrenewing our mind.
Now we're renewing our body.
First Corinthians 6, 19 and 20says, Don't you realize that
your body is the temple of theHoly Spirit?
(07:59):
You do not belong to yourself.
Honor God with your body.
Well, let's get real.
Most of us are in the place thatwe are in life because we've
treated our body like itbelonged to us.
Like it was ours to abuse.
Like consequences don't apply.
(08:21):
God cares deeply about ourphysical health.
Your body is not your own.
Your body is his temple.
I'll say it straight.
If your mind changes, but yourbehavior stays the same, nothing
changes.
Nothing changes.
(08:44):
Just like for renewing yourmind, I have inventory questions
for renewing your body.
And if you'll look in thechapters, if you want to go back
and write these down, um, thechapters for the podcast, I put
inventory questions as thechapter name so you can go
(09:05):
directly to it.
Or you can read the transcriptbecause it's in there.
So first inventory question.
Pardon my huff there.
It's late.
It's late, and tomorrow is theWednesday before Thanksgiving.
Why am I just talking to you?
(09:26):
I don't know.
We don't talk enough.
You listen to me talk, but Inever really say anything
personal.
So I love you.
Thanks for listening.
Let's move on.
First inventory question.
How have you mistreated yourbody?
Now mistreatment of your bodyincludes alcohol abuse, drug
(09:49):
use, overeating, starvingyourself, sexual sin, um,
ignoring rest.
That's a big one.
Staying up all night playingvideo games, and then trying to
get up and work to the glory ofGod, and you're tired and you
can't.
That's that's mistreating yourbody.
(10:09):
Trust me, you will grow oldwithout sleep.
Living recklessly.
You know what the problem withall those are?
Sin is fun.
It's fun until it's not.
Sin is destructive, but it'spleasant.
But that's the devil's game.
(10:30):
Destruction always comes with abill and it always gets paid.
Next inventory question (10:36):
What
habits have harmed your health?
Psalm 139 reminds us that Godknit you together intentionally.
You were not designed forself-destruction.
You were designed for a purpose.
Self-harm is not freedom, itbecomes bondage.
(10:58):
It's a problem.
So once you renew your mind andrenew your body, you can start
focusing on the other aspects ofyour life.
We're going to talk about familynow, your family.
Joshua 24, 15 says, As for meand my family, we will serve the
Lord.
Families were created to be safeplaces.
(11:19):
For a lot of us, they're not.
For a lot of people, that'swhere our fear comes from.
The sin that started in thefamily gets twisted to where the
family unit is a place of pain.
So our first inventory questionfor that is have you mistreated
(11:41):
anyone in your family?
Mistreatment?
It includes yelling, belittling, emotional neglect, ignoring
needs, indifference, controllingbehavior.
Do you see yourself in any ofthat?
(12:01):
Why is it so hard to face thehurt that we caused?
Because guilt is heavy.
Because humility is painful.
And confession requires courage.
Got another inventory question.
Who do you hold on resentmenttoward?
(12:24):
Resentment, especially in afamily unit, is poison that
never stays in one room.
And it leaks into yourrelationships, into your mind,
into all the decisions you make.
And ignoring it doesn't make itgo away, it just makes it
stronger.
(12:46):
Another inventory question isabout amends, making amends.
Whom do you owe amends?
Now, amends are not about fixingeverything immediately.
That's not gonna happen.
But they are about owning thedamage.
And once you take that step, youcan start working towards the
(13:08):
future.
Another inventory question Whatfamily secret have you been
denying?
Jeremiah 6 14 says, They offersuperficial treatments for my
people's mortal wound.
You can't heal what you refuseto acknowledge.
Every family has things thatnobody wants to talk about.
(13:32):
But God brings healing throughhonesty, not hiding.
And God has a great option forpeople who can't get the peace
that they need from theirphysical family.
It's called church.
Hebrews 10, 25 says, and let usnot neglect our meeting
together, but encourage oneanother.
(13:54):
You know what that means?
Do you know what that means?
It means that God, it means thatthe Bible, God's word, says, go
to church.
All you people that say, I don'thave to go to church, I can
worship on my own.
Well, guess what?
You're wrong.
You're wrong, and you're lazy, and you're just looking for an
(14:16):
excuse to not go to church.
So you try to convince yourselfand others that going fishing on
Sunday morning instead of goingto worship is you worshiping
God.
Well, I'm calling out your bullcrap because that's not it.
You're not worshiping God duringthat time.
God created the church as asupport system, it's a place to
(14:37):
grow.
It's a place to be sharpened,it's a place to be loved and
held accountable.
Your first inventory questionabout that is have you been
faithful to your church?
Now let me give you these.
Faithfulness includes showingup, not just on Sunday morning,
(14:57):
but every time the doors open.
Faithfulness includes servingothers.
It includes giving.
It includes praying.
It includes helping others grow.
Most of us come to church andtake and take and take.
But church is about giving.
(15:19):
Giving what you have so somebodyelse can benefit from it.
Being part of a fellowship.
Being faithful to church, beingfaithful to your church includes
(15:42):
all of those.
Another inventory question (15:45):
Have
you been critical instead of
active?
Criticism without involvement isjust spiritual laziness.
It's easier to point out theproblem than become part of the
solution.
If you want a strong church, youhave to build one.
And those of you that left achurch because you're not being
(16:07):
fed, what did you do to make itbetter?
Probably nothing.
You were just looking for anexcuse to not go to church
anymore.
Nobody's fooled by your by yourwords.
Nobody's fooled by your falserighteousness.
They're not.
(16:28):
Isaiah 118 says, Though yoursins are like scarlet, I will
make them white as snow.
You know, a spiritual inventoryis not about shame.
It's about freedom.
God wants you honest and hewants you unburdened.
He wants you to be free fromsecrets and habits and patterns
(16:51):
that have been choking yourfuture.
Your list needs balance, strengths and weaknesses,
failures and victories.
And it needs accountabilitybecause isolation kills growth.
And that's another one for you.
I go fishing on Sunday mornings, and that's how I worship.
(17:14):
Isolation kills growth.
Yeah, you might pray when you'reout there.
Lord, please let me catch thebig one.
But you're not growing.
You can face every part of yourstory because God walks with you
through every part of yourstory, and He finishes what He
(17:34):
starts.
So as I wrap this up this week,I've got four questions that I
want you to think about andanswer as you're doing this
spiritual inventory.
First one, what part of yourthought life is God highlighting
right now?
(17:55):
The second, what's one changeyou can begin this week to
better guard your mind?
The third one, where do you needhealing in your body, in your
family, or your churchrelationships?
And the fourth and finalquestion, and probably the
biggest one What will yousurrender today so
(18:18):
transformation can begin?
