(00:24):
and discovering thelife-changing impact of our
words.

the power of a renewed mindset.
Don't conform transform.
Welcome back to RenewedMindsets.
I'm Rick and I'm so glad you'rehere.

(01:09):
You know today's topic is bothchallenging and transformative
Controlling the tongue.
Did you know that the averageperson speaks about 16,000 words
a day?
Imagine the impact we couldmake if all those words were
intentional day.
Imagine the impact we couldmake if all those words were
intentional, uplifting andGod-honoring.
Our words hold immense powerpower to build up or to tear

(01:32):
down.
Today we're going to unpackJames, chapter 3, and Ephesians
chapter 4, and we're going toreflect on practical ways to
control our speech and evenlearn some fascinating facts
about the human tongue.
Stick around, because thisepisode is packed with wisdom
and encouragement.

(01:52):
Now let's start by groundingourselves in Scripture.
I'll begin with James 3, verses8-10 from the New Living
Translation.
But no one can tame the tongue.
It is restless and evil, fullof deadly poison.
Sometimes it praises our Lordand Father and sometimes it
curses those who have been madein the image of God.

(02:14):
And so blessing and cursingcome pouring out of the same
mouth.
Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right.
That is a very convictingpassage.
James is drawing attention tothe double-edged nature of our
speech.
Now think about it.

(02:35):
We can use the same mouth toworship God on Sunday morning
and then gossip or complain orroad rage on somebody on Monday.
It's a stark reminder that ourwords reflect our hearts.
Controlling the tongue isn'tjust about discipline, it's
about transformation.
Now let's turn to Ephesians,chapter 4, verses 29 through 31

(03:01):
from the New Living Translation.
Don't use foul or abusivelanguage.
Through 31 from the New LivingTranslation.
Don't use foul or abusivelanguage.
Let everything you say be goodand helpful, so that your words
will be an encouragement tothose who hear them.
And do not bring sorrow toGod's Holy Spirit by the way you
live.
Remember he has identified youas His own, guaranteeing that

(03:22):
you'll be saved on the day ofredemption.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words and slander
, as well as all types of evilbehavior.
Now Paul's words here are sopractical.
He challenges us to avoidunwholesome talk.
That includes gossip, sarcasmor any words that tear others

(03:46):
down.
Instead, we're called to speakwords that edify and encourage.
Now, how often do we stop toconsider whether our words are
truly benefiting those who hearthem?
This passage reminds us to beintentional and spirit-led in
our communication.
Now let's just take a deeperlook at these passages.

(04:09):
James uses the imagery of arestless, evil and deadly poison
.
Think about a single carelessword and how it can spiral into
hurt feelings or brokenrelationships or even years of
regret.
Right, have you ever saidsomething in the heat of the
moment that you wished you couldtake back?
No, I have.

(04:30):
James's warning isn't just toshame us.
It's to wake us up to thegravity of our words and the
need for God's help.
And in Ephesians, paul goes onand talks hand in hand with this
.
It's not enough to simply avoidsaying harmful things.
We're called to replace thosewords with ones that build

(04:54):
others up.
It's not always easy, especially when we're hurt or
frustrated, but this is wherethe Holy Spirit comes in.
We can't do this in our ownstrength.
Controlling the tongue is partof our sanctification.
It's a daily process ofsurrendering our hearts and
mouths to God.
So have you ever heard thephrase word of mouth?

(05:18):
Word of mouth is a phrase thatrefers to the sharing of
information between peoplethrough spoken communication.
Word of mouth is also a form ofsocial influence.
Word of mouth is also a form ofsocial influence and that's
based on trust and personalrelationships.
It operates on the principlethat people are more likely to

(05:43):
believe and act on the advice ofsomebody that they know and
trust better, or rather than onadvertising or other forms of
marketing right.
So the reason why word of mouthis so effective is because of
the way that our brains processinformation.
When we receive informationfrom somebody we know and trust,
it activates the reward centersin our brain, which release

(06:06):
dopamine all those feel-goodneurotransmitters and this makes
us more likely to remember andact on the information that we
receive, and add to that when weshare information with other
people, it reinforces our ownbeliefs and strengthens our
relationships.
That's the social validationand it's a powerful motivator

(06:28):
for human behavior, and I thinkevery one of y'all ought to try
it.
I need you to word of mouth thispodcast to everybody you know
and, just as a test, just to seehow they like it and how you
feel about it.
I'm so sorry it all can't be anadvertisement, can it?

(06:51):
Let's talk about how we canapply all these truths that
we've gone over in our dailylives.
Okay, I'm going to share fourpractical steps that can help us
control our tongue.
First, pause before speaking.
Have you ever heard the sayingthink before you speak.
Well?

(07:11):
Proverbs, chapter 15, verse 28says the heart of the godly
thinks carefully before speaking.
The mouth of the wickedoverflows with evil words.
Now this verse reminds us topause and consider our words
carefully.
When you're in a heatedsituation, take a deep breath

(07:35):
before responding.
Ask yourself is what I'm aboutto say true and kind and
necessary?
Second, choose words that buildup.
Make it a habit to speakencouragement and gratitude and
truth.
Replace complaints withthankfulness Instead of

(07:56):
criticizing.
Offer constructive feedback.
Remember words have the powerto heal.
Proverbs 16.24 says Kind wordsare like honey sweet to the soul
and healthy for the body.
At my church we actually had, right before Christmas or right
before right around the holidaytime, we had a no complaining

(08:19):
week, and every time you caughtyourself or you caught somebody
else complaining I don'tremember what the deal was you
had to put a dollar in theoffering plate for the school.
We have a school at our church,so apparently there was a lot
of money donated to the schoolduring that time.
The third one is accountability.

(08:41):
Change in your life doesn'thappen in isolation.
Find a trusted friend or afamily member or a mentor,
somebody that can hold youaccountable.
Ask them to, in a loving way, point out when your words don't
align with God's standard, anddon't forget to pray together

(09:02):
for wisdom and self-control.
And finally, daily surrender.
Every morning, surrender yourspeech to God.
Pray something like this Lord, guard my tongue today.
Help me to speak words thatglorify you and edify others.
Holy Spirit, take control of mymouth.

(09:24):
It's amazing how starting theday with this mindset can
transform your intentions.
It's amazing how starting theday with this mindset can
transform your intentions.
Now let's take a little breakfrom all this heavy stuff and
jump into some fun.
Some fascinating facts about thehuman tongue.
The tongue is an incredibleorgan.
It's made up of eight muscleswhich give it strength and

(09:46):
flexibility.
It's not the strongest musclein the body, but it is certainly
one of the most versatile.
Okay, next thing taste buds.
The average human tongue hasabout 2,000 to 4,000 taste buds.
Now, these tiny receptors allowus to enjoy sweet, salty, sour,

(10:07):
bitter.
And here's a fun fact yourtaste buds regenerate every 10
to 14 days.
Now here's something you mightnot have known Tongue prints.
Just like fingerprints, everybody's tongue print is
unique.
It's amazing.
It just makes me think if, uh,all these TV shows and movies

(10:31):
where somebody gets arrested ifthey had to lick a piece of
paper rather than get theirfingerprint, anyway, it's stupid
.
I just thought it was funny.
It's just a reminder of how,how fearfully and wonderfully
made we are.
Um, the tongue and of course weall know this it's essential
for speech, and its precisemovements allow us to articulate

(10:55):
sounds and words.
Without it, clear communicationwould be impossible.
Think about it the next timeyou're singing or sharing a
heartfelt message with somebody,or if you're doing a podcast
and you want to do an example ofthat you're going to keep your
tongue in the bottom of yourmouth and not use it when you

(11:17):
talk.
And if I will cook, a couplewill be impossible.
Can you go back by that kind ofthing of heaven, man?
That's horrible.
And only you diehards are theones that heard that because
you're listening.
Near the end I got a coupleother quick ones here.

(11:37):
The tongue is the fastesthealing tissue in the body.
It's always working.
The tongue guides saliva intothe throat while you sleep.
It can change color to indicateyour health.
The blue whale this is a bigone, the blue whale.

(12:00):
Of course that's not a humantongue, but the blue whale's
tongue weighs 2.7 tons.
2.7 tons, it's a big, oldtongue.
And now Deep Thoughts with RickYuhas Don't mix bad words with

(12:27):
your bad mood.
You'll have many opportunitiesto change a mood, but you'll
never get the opportunity toreplace the words that you spoke
.
Now, as I wrap up here, I wantto leave you with this thought

(12:50):
Controlling the tongue is nosmall task, but it's a vital
part of living a God-honoringlife.
We've got to remember that ourwords have the power to bring
life or destruction, and byyielding our speech to the Holy
Spirit and committing tobuilding others up.
We can reflect God's love inevery conversation.

(13:16):
So let's close in prayer.
Father God, we surrender ourtongues to you.
Help us to speak words thatbring life and healing and
encouragement.
Forgive us for the times thatwe've used our words to harm
people, and guide us to use yourspeech to glorify.

(13:37):
To glorify you In Jesus'precious name, amen.
Well, that's all for thisweek's show.
You know the name of this showspeaks my hope for you.
It's taken from the words ofRomans, chapter 12, verse 2.
Do not be conformed to thisworld, but be transformed by the

(14:02):
renewal of your mind that bytesting, you may discern what is
the will of God, what is goodand acceptable and perfect.
If you enjoyed what you heard,do me a favor, please, and tell
someone you know about it.
