Can chasing a legacy lead us astray? On today's episode of Renewed Mindsets, we promise to unravel the cautionary tales of the Tower of Babel and the Titanic, where the ambition to "make a name" spelled disaster. Join me, Rick, as I share an exclusive episode from my other podcast, Wisdom for the Day, where we navigate through Genesis 11:4 and Captain Edward J. Smith’s fateful journey, drawing lessons on pride, ambition, and the pursuit of significance. Through a Gen X lens filled with humor and nostalgia, we'll explore how our quest for lasting legacies can sometimes distance us from God and each other.

Get ready to reflect on personal legacy versus divine purpose, as we find hope in the redemptive narrative of Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit united the scattered. Our conversation today encourages finding true significance not in building our own towers, but in being part of God's greater story. Together, let's pray for unity in Christ, asking God to place His own name upon us and guide our steps away from self-centered pursuits. Tune in and be inspired with a fresh perspective that transforms your spiritual playlist and mindset.

of Wisdom of the Day for you.

It's very short, usually aboutfive minutes, and it's a
devotional.
It's something different everyday, just something to help you
start or end your day with God,just to get you a little
jumpstart, something to get yougoing.
We're into the second year ofWisdom for the Day.

(01:32):

It's a different kind ofpodcast, but it's really the
same demographic.
I love you See.
Ya, you embrace each day withfaith and wisdom, ready to feel

(02:45):
inspired.
Let's get started.
Today is day 36.
Make a name.
Reading from Genesis, chapter11, verse 4 from the New Living
Translation Come, let us buildourselves a city so that we may
make a name for ourselves.
Let us build ourselves a cityso that we may make a name for
ourselves.
Edward J Smith.
Do you recognize that name?

(03:06):
He was the captain of one ofthe most famous sea voyages in
history the Titanic's ill-fatedjourney.
Now, after setbacks in hiscareer, this new commission was
his chance to restore hisreputation.
He was determined to impresshis harshest critics.
Smith prioritized speed oversafety.

(03:28):
He ignored warnings aboutweather conditions.
In reality, it wasn't just aniceberg that sank the Titanic.
It was the pride of EdwardSmith and his employer, the
White Star Line.
Now many of us are also caughtup in trying to make a name for
ourselves.
Who can blame us?

(03:49):
No one wants to be forgotten orcast aside.
We're taught that the winnersin life are those who secure a
lasting legacy, even if it'sjust a footnote in history.
But this drive to make a namefor ourselves is nothing new.
It's a replay of what happenedon the plains of Shinar at the
Tower of Babel.

(04:09):
There, humanity sought to builda tower to the heavens, a
project fueled by pride.
The effort was doomed from thestart, as the pride that
separates us from God alsoseparates us from one another.
The confusion and scattering ofthe people at Babel are fitting

(04:31):
consequences for those whorefuse to hear God's unifying
voice.
But God's response to thedivisions of Babel is seen in
Pentecost.
Through the power of the HolySpirit, people from many nations
were brought together, unitedunder God's name.
That's from Acts 2.21.

(04:52):
In contrast to the fragmentationat Babel, pentecost shows us
God's plan to reconcile andunite through His Spirit.
Pentecost shows us God's planto reconcile and unite through
His Spirit.
True significance and unitycome not from building a name
for ourselves, but from being apart of God's redemptive story.
Pray with me, father.

(05:13):
God, lord Almighty, ourarrogant name-building isolates
us from you and our neighbors.
Place your own name upon us,lord.
We pray, and give us unity inbearing the name of Christ, amen
.
Well, that's all for today, butI'll be back tomorrow with more
