Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, around the
world.
I mean, think about it 8billion people all watching this
right now.
Maybe one day, action.
(00:31):
You're here.
We're here together.
Welcome to the RespectingPerspectives podcast.
My name's Andrew AWALLACornwall, the artist that you
haven't heard or seen of yetuntil right now.
(00:51):
I got the team here at theWatermelon Room and I want to
welcome y'all.
Thank you for being here withme.
Thank you for being here withme.
We're going to dive into somany different topics and
(01:19):
discussions and forethoughts andafterthoughts and perspectives
that you didn't even know wereout there.
Man, the journey has beenamazing.
It took a lot to get here.
Lots of planning, preparationand think about all the things
(01:40):
that had to happen before youcould even be here.
There was a time where therewas a caveman in a freaking cave
hunting and look where I'm atright now.
(02:04):
I mean I guess you could callthis hunting in a way, but I'm
searching.
I'll tell you that Always willbe.
That's a lifelong thing andthroughout this podcast I will
(02:25):
search for meaning, search foranswers, probably even come up
with more questions than answers, but at least we're trying.
You know what I mean.
Music is my heart and soul.
(02:48):
You're going to hear me talkabout that a lot, because it has
led me throughout life and hasgotten me here today always
(03:10):
loved to sing and to write poemsand paintings and everything I
could get my hands on.
Art class was my absolutefavorite and I was always that
kid in class who I had to makeeverybody laugh and it was just
something that I just likedeverybody when people were
laughing, everybody was justkind of coming together in a way
(03:31):
.
You know you were present.
Think about that, like whenyou're laughing, you know you're
like you really like present.
And as I grow up I start to seedifferent points of view and
aspects of things and that'swhat this is for to highlight
(03:55):
and throughout this podcastyou're going to hear about some
of the songs I've written.
By the way, I'm a songwriter,lyricist, hip-hop, r&b, some
soul.
I love a little bit ofeverything honestly, anything
(04:15):
that can get me in the feels.
You know.
Used to play the trombone, usedto play a little bit of the
drums year in high school.
The violin when I was like sixyears old, I played the violin
(04:36):
for like five or six years andthat's where my love for music
really kind of sprouted.
Took me a while afterwards, too, to figure that out, I didn't
really think about how importantthat music theory, and just the
(04:57):
, the repetition, was going tobe such an integral part of my
life.
So grateful for that.
Respecting perspectives, man.
(05:22):
Let that sink in.
What's that mean to you?
Well, you know, to respectsomething, man, it means to have
love and admiration forsomething.
You can respect all differentthings, walks of life, respect,
(05:52):
it's earned.
You know you got to earn that.
Earn that, keep.
It ain't just going to come.
You know so many people thinkit's just going to overnight.
Now you know what I'm trying towork for it, because it'll be.
(06:22):
It'll be that much more worthit in the end.
For sure.
Makes me think, though, youknow.
Do you respect yourself?
Let me ask that one more time.
Do you Respect yourself?
Let me think on that.
Do you respect yourself, do you?
(06:54):
What about y'all?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Man man.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Let that be the
mantra Respect yourself, because
guess what, if you can'trespect yourself, how do you
expect to respect others?
Just expecting respect out here?
(07:27):
And then let's, let's bridge alittle bit off that you know
perspectives.
What is a perspective?
It's a different view.
It's a different view.
It's a different.
It's a different thought.
(07:48):
It's a different scene.
It's a different feel.
It doesn't actually need to bea camera, you know.
It can be anything.
I love drone shots.
It can be anything.
I love drone shots Because youget that perspective you don't
(08:20):
normally get to see.
It's kind of like my mind, though.
It's kind of one over here, oneover there.
Which one's going to get thebest view, well, that's up to
you, but until you see otherperspectives, you're not going
(08:50):
to understand where they'recoming from, and it's going to
help you understand the world.
I know it's helped meunderstand the world and to even
dig a little bit more.
I'm a musician, an artist, asongwriter, and Respecting
Perspectives was my first EPthat I dropped last year, and I
(09:12):
had been working on that for ayear or two.
A bunch of different producersfrom around the world, bringing
some guys together.
Bringing some guys together gota guy from India got a guy from
(09:32):
California, from New York, alldifferent walks of life just
coming together to kind of helpy'all understand where I'm
coming from or at least give youa better view of it or a
(09:56):
different view, even a bad.
I guess there's no such thingas like a better view.
You know, sometimes you justgot to look up, got to look
around man.
Let me give you a little bitmore.
On my background I have about ahundred notebooks with lyrics
(10:24):
and actually we'll have asegment where we go through some
of those and even involve y'allwith some of the creative and
the writing process.
I would love to do that.
That's what this is all aboutseriously Bringing y'all in on
(10:45):
the creations themselves.
And don't worry, even if youdon't consider yourself creative
or an artist, guess what?
Every single living thing is aform of an artist.
Right, okay, I've seen Thingsblow in the sand and make a
(11:15):
picture, you know, just paintfall On the canvas.
But I'm trying to be a littlemore direct with it With the
respect thing, can you be honestwith yourself?
(11:36):
It might not be the bestfeeling to say something that
maybe hurts or doesn't feel good, or maybe even something that
you you know, character, tradeor whatever.
Take a breath, get yourthoughts together, just be
(12:00):
honest with yourself every nowand then, you know, take some
time to really think about it.
Think about the truth, thehonest truths.
What are some truths out there?
Let's see, a truth for me isthat I'm always going to be
(12:24):
learning.
I will never know everything.
I may think I do.
I know a few people who thinkthey know everything I may think
I do.
I know a few people who thinkthey know everything.
But this is really just meopening up and I hope you can do
(12:46):
the same.
And anytime I tie music tosomething I want you to think to
yourself.
You know what is your music?
Everybody's got their versionof that thing that drives them.
(13:10):
You know what gets you up inthe morning and not just gets
you up but keeps you up, getsyou going to that first cup of
coffee.
You know, gets you going tothat first step at work.
(13:31):
I know I work a nine to five.
I fix heaters and airconditioners.
I don't even talk about that.
I got people who've been aroundme like 10 years and they're
like wait a second.
You know, I think I need tojust talk about the normal stuff
too, you know, because thatmakes me who I am.
Also.
Normal stuff too, you know, because that makes me who I am
(13:54):
also.
They give you a good point withthat Fixing somebody's heater.
Gosh, I can be like Superman toan older lady.
You know what I mean.
They walk in and she's gotblankets on her and I can come
(14:21):
in, go downstairs, move a fewthings, voila On.
I can't figure everyone out, butit's always a challenge, it's
always something new and that'spretty cool.
I never thought that that wouldeven be a thing.
I went to school here inBaltimore at Loyola and then
(14:51):
went to Stevenson after that andI didn't even know what the
heck I wanted to do.
The whole time I'm in college, just like bouncing around.
I have so many friends andfamily members who went through
the same thing.
That's normal.
Think about that.
That's normal.
Like, think about that.
(15:16):
Okay, that's normal.
And I slowly started to realizethat, like, communication was my
thing.
It was my jam.
Just talking to people, just alittle out loud with it.
You know, got to get a littleloud with it.
(15:38):
Okay, ask yourself questions.
I pride myself in being thattype of person who asks the
questions that most people don'task and it can seem kind of
(15:58):
maybe off-putting or out of leftfield every now and then, but I
think just to even ask thosequestions is important.
I think just to even ask thosequestions is important.
Never think you know it,because there are a lot of smart
(16:25):
people out there and hopefullywe'll be able to have some on
here.
Throughout my life I have triedto embrace change.
We're creatures of habit.
We get through and through.
(16:50):
Each day it's a groundhog's day, you know.
Not trying to live like that, you know, trying to change it up
, switch it up a little.
You know, take a differentroute to work, put a different
channel on.
You know, jam some AWOL artist, get with me, feel me.
(17:20):
I'm just trying to speak tomyself.
My songs are lessons to myself.
You know, do this, don't dothat.
Remember this.
My music is a man.
(17:41):
My music is a way for me toprove that I was here.
How are you proving that you'rehere and you don't?
You don't got to prove tonobody but yourself.
(18:03):
You know, and you got to Prove, man, think about that.
Let's think.
You know we're going to do thattoo.
I'm going to get a word and, man, I'm just going to think on
that.
Words, man, that's the craziestthing.
You figure them out, take youanywhere in life.
(18:31):
You become one with your word, impeccable with your word.
We'll dig into that book alittle bit, the four agreements,
how that's helped shape me andthe way that I've thought
(18:54):
recently.
You know there's times where Ihave to kind of go back skim a
little bit, like you know what.
Oh man, that made a lot ofsense, and sometimes it don't
actually.
What am I saying?
Most of the time it don'tActually.
What am I saying?
Most of the time it don't makesense.
(19:15):
But who's it supposed to makesense to?
You know?
I mean there's a purpose foryou.
I know that because I feel mine, I found mine and I'm here,
(19:38):
we're here.
I want to help you find yours.
You know you're going to haveto try some things.
You're going to have topractice.
You're going to have to trysome things.
You're going to have topractice.
You're going to have to fall, get back up, dust your knees off
(19:59):
.
You know.
You know, hop back on Till thefat lady sings.
Man, let's take a second.
(20:21):
Think about that purpose thing.
Think about what's.
What are your passions?
You know, I think one of myfirst passions Was traveling,
(20:50):
just like seeing differentthings.
You know, when I was a kid, Iwas always that kid that was
like is staying over at otherplaces.
I was always like I don't knowif this is going to work, until
I got like a certain age, maybelike 25 or something like that.
(21:11):
But you know, once I startedtraveling, I then was able to
see what else was going on outthere.
You know, back to the wholeperspective thing.
(21:33):
You know, think about all theplaces in the world right now.
You couldn't even think aboutthis If you tried your damnedest
to visit every single placehere on earth.
(21:56):
It's not even possible, noteven near possible.
Once I got out of Baltimore andsaw what else was out there man
, that was out there, man, phew, that was eye opening and I
(22:20):
didn't even have to do anything, just had to go there.
It was already there, Shit'sout there.
You don't even have to doanything Except go there.
You know, think about close youreyes.
You know, think about that oneplace you always wanted to visit
(22:43):
but you never got to yet.
Just picture yourself thereright now, you know.
And why is this place soimportant?
And it can even be somewhereyou've been before.
(23:03):
You know what makes that spotthe spot.
Then you open your eyes andguess what?
You're somewhere totallydifferent, totally new.
(23:26):
You know the fact that we canjust close our eyes and be
somewhere else for a fraction ofa second.
I mean that's pretty cool, youknow.
Think about when you're dreaming.
You know throughout that timewhere do you go, where do we go?
(23:54):
Makes you think.
You know some of it feelsreally familiar.
Sometimes it doesn't it likefeels foreign.
You know what I mean.
Like that feeling, like youknow what I mean.
Like that feeling like you knowyou've never been there before,
(24:16):
but like you're not scared butyou're also not familiar either.
And now, when I'm in a new spotor a new place or I'm traveling,
I love to not know where I'm at.
(24:41):
Like looking down a street andseeing that place for the first
time of my life.
Like this place exists.
This place exists over here.
You know, and that place youthought about in your mind, you
(25:03):
can be there, you can go there.
You might have to put somethings into place, some planning
, some preparation, but once youdo, it's on.
Say it with me, it's going tobe a journey.
Think about what is a journey,a trek, an expedition Don't stop
(25:35):
believing Takes you somewhere.
It takes you on a journey, man.
Again, music is going to dothat for me.
I can put on some music andthat'll take me somewhere.
(25:55):
A time machine Time machinesexist, all right.
You just got to find it.
You just got to know how towork it.
You just got to know how towork it.
It'll take you a while.
Some people don't even figureit out.
(26:15):
I want you to think about this.
Okay, some people go throughlife, their whole life, without
(26:37):
even figuring themselves out,let alone what's around us.
Don't be one of those people.
It's not going to be easyeither.
Anything that Is worth doingand requires that much time and
(27:07):
attention and sacrifice, sacrifice what are you going to
sacrifice in order to get whereyou want?
And I don't want to soundpreachy either.
Okay, I'm talking out loud.
(27:29):
You know there will be timesprobably where, like in in my
head, I feel like I'm preachingor something, but I don't want
to do that.
Just opening up, just beinghonest.
Back to that Talk about anetwork, building a network, man
(27:51):
, because I've been building, building baby, steady building,
although I mean, there weretimes where I built that house,
a glass and I was playing rockand roll loud.
(28:13):
A glass and I was playing rockand roll Loud.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Ten.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Start over, build it
even nicer the next time.
You know what I mean.
Got some extra leg room, got a.5 bathroom over there, got a
finished basement, got the stew, but it's all glass and guess
(28:49):
what.
You already know and that'sokay, that's cool, as long as
I'm willing to try again.
I mean, I know that soundscliche as heck Try Trying again.
(29:18):
Did you even try a first time?
How you going to try again?
You didn't even try a firsttime, but you had to practice.
You know what I mean From thatpoint point, thousands of times,
before that becomesnatural.
(29:41):
You know what is it that feelsnatural?
Is life natural?
You know?
I mean we got Mother Naturearound
us.
That's the wildest thing too, because all the things that are
(30:08):
happening around us with theworld, things that are happening
around us with the world, things growing and falling and
burning and bridging Ebb andflow, when it really comes down
(30:36):
to just being centered, you knowyou got your two shoulders here
, but you got to stay centered.
Think of being self-centered.
I think it's like it can mean afew things too, isn't that wild
(30:57):
one that's centered in theirself?
I mean that sounds like a goodway to go.
But then when you hear aboutsomeone being self-centered, you
know really that it's just thatcenter that they think about
ago.
But then when you hear aboutsomeone being self-centered,
it's just that center that theythink about.
They don't really think aboutanything on the outside, when
(31:26):
those viewpoints on the outsidehere are going to help you
understand what's going oninside.
I think you know I'm just outhere guessing, but it feels good
(31:49):
, feels good to do so, and I'mgoing to do a quick reading from
as a man Thinketh, one of myfavorite books
ever.
If you don't have it, get it.
Change your life.
What you are, so is your world.
(32:16):
Everything in the universe isresolved into your own inward
experience.
It matters little what iswithout, for it is all a
reflection of your own state ofconsciousness.
It matters everything without, for it is all a reflection of
(32:36):
your own state of consciousness.
It matters everything which youare within, for everything
without will be mirrored andcolored accordingly.
All that you positively know iscontained in your own
experience.
In your own experience.
All that you ever will knowMust pass Through the gateway Of
(32:57):
experience and so become partOf
yourself.
And, as a little surprise, I'mgoing to perform my latest track
(33:18):
, breather.
Check it out, cause I don'twanna go, but I don't wanna stay
(33:48):
here, neither Don't know whatto do now.
I can't help that.
I'm a dreamer, can't make up mymind, keep telling myself I
don't need her, don't know whoto call, sometimes Think we need
(34:09):
a breather.
Yeah, this life is such astrange thing, crazy, with some
pain bring, always with the samesting, maybe why I've been a
little off lately.
She been at my neck kinda hastyLittle times to ourself.
Can't hurt, won't hurt.
Gotta dig takes work toself-search.
(34:30):
Yeah, first, both deserve theopposite.
Or worse, had to switch thingsup, flip it and reverse.
Moving, floating, travelingSometime.
Moving floating traveling.
Sometime Drifting through thethrough the through the.
(35:07):
Cause I don't wanna go.
But I don't wanna stay here, neither Don't know what to do
now.
I can't help that.
I'm a dreamer, can't make outmy mind, keep telling myself I
don't need her, don't know whoto call, sometimes Think we need
(35:31):
a breather.
Gotta, leave left, take a break, breathe.
Gotta, leave left, take a break, breathe.
Gotta, leave left, take a break, breathe.
Gotta, leave left, take a break, breathe, cause I don't wanna
go, I don't wanna stay, don'tknow what to do, I don't want to
(35:52):
go, I don't want to stay.
Speaker 2 (35:55):
Don't know what to do
.
Can't make up my mind, cause Idon't want to.
I don't want to, I don't wantto, I don't want to.
Don't know what to Don't knowwhat to Don't know what.
To Don't know what to Don'tknow what to don't know what, to
(36:21):
.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
Yeah, I think we need
a breather breather, breather.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
I'm sorry,
