(00:01):
This week, on the retro game Redux podcast,
we're back after a long Hiatus.
We're gonna talk about it a bunch of
things. I got a steam deck. We're gonna
talk about that and how we can use
it to emulate
old games.
We're gonna talk about different summer sales,
collect missions that are available
and
some of the games we've been playing and

(00:21):
looking forward to playing. So they can.

(00:43):
Welcome back to the Retro game Redux podcast.
My name is Ts Aka a Steve K
wished me as always
is the Curb.
Aka John Kirby.
Curb. It's been so long. How you doing,
Buddy?
I'm doing really good. It's good to be
back on the podcast. Good to hear your
voice.
I'm, it's it's been a great it's been

(01:04):
a great time.
I've been looking real forward to coming back
and,
discussing all sorts of things here with you
on the Richer game Redux podcast.
Have you been my friend? I've been good.
It's been a hectic a couple of months.
Moved into a new place,
moved in with 2 dogs so you may
hear in the background from time to time
from now on.

(01:24):
I think it's cute. I don't know about
you, but yeah. We get dogs. I got
a new
recording room.
Which is also by new stream room. It
it was really cool to set that up.
I don't know if you've seen
me streaming recently, But, yeah, Look a lot
different than the old space. I missed the
old space, but the new space is much

(01:46):
bigger.
It's much nicer, and
yeah, I'm really happier.
I do find it's hard to let, you
know, to let go of the, the old
spaces and the nostalgia associated with it, but
you know, there's always you there's always the
new things. The the, you know, building the
the dream room that you wanna set up
for recording and streaming and

(02:06):
and you'll come to love that even more
than you did the old space. I sort
of already do. It's it's been great. Yeah.
The next step I have is
I wanna eventually get all of the consoles
out, so they're not in, like,
drawers so I can have them all set
up and get a switch a switch between
them.

(02:28):
It... Yes. That... That's something I've definitely wanted
to do when I have a better space.
I know I'm planning to move
to the northeast
northeastern Us and a year or 2. And
hopefully, we can get a place where I
have the ability to set up a room
like that with all the switches and stuff
and kinda have everything consolidated in 1 space.

(02:49):
Nice nice. Well, that should be good.
Yeah. What have you been playing lately curb?
Well,
with the steam summer sale going on, there's
a lot of stuff that have kind of
picked up and even before then, there have
been some
releases and sales that have I've kinda of
taken advantage of.

(03:10):
With the announcement of the
something I've been looking forward to, I never
thought it was ever gonna happen, but dream
dream time,
Marvel versus Capcom collection was ousted with that,
I got to looking at the other games
in the collections. So I per purchased the
Capcom fighting collection,
which has some of the more obscure

(03:30):
fighting game titles like dark stock,
and includes the Street fighter hyper
fighting
version.
So I've been enjoying this stuff the stuff
out of that.
Also,
been a bit of a nostalgia
remake trip,
Si,
who you may know,

(03:52):
from Mist and R actually released the ribbon
3 d remake.
About a couple week or so back.
And suffice to say, I am in love
with it. It is
it's different from the original. It's not a
it's not a puzzle to puzzle rem...
Port or anything like that. It's actually remade

(04:14):
some of the puzzles in environment and layout,
in a way that actually makes it fresh
to anyone who's never played River or
for those with, you know, had driven their
whole lives. It actually brings a lot of
freshness
to it, and I've just enjoyed it so
much. I I don't know what what excuse
me. I don't know what a R is.

(04:35):
So,
what... What's what's R?
So R is a sequel. Have you ever
heard of the game missed?
Yes. YST.
Yes.
You have what of those like classic Cd
Rom, like,
you know, p kind of
games from the midnight environmental puzzle game. Yes.
So R is actually the direct sequel to

(04:56):
Mist.
And it was a mega hit for Cy.
And so,
you know, that was like, way back in
the nineties is like the mid to late
nineties, they had released these games, and,
I grew up with with mist
and R,
and then to hear that they have... They
have already released,

(05:17):
missed back in 20 21 as a full
3 d
remake vr compatible
and all that, and then
they released r,
3 years later, you know, this summer,
and to rave reviews,
it was originally part

(05:38):
of a fan project called the Starry expanse
project, was which was
a work in progress 3 d creation of
ribbon, but,
Cy kinda stepped in and say, hey, we're
gonna be actually doing a remake of ribbon.
And so
some...
A lot of collaboration was happening with this
this fan community team

(06:00):
in cy themselves. And so, with the help...
With the help with each other, they helped,
make this,
ribbon release a reality. So
it's actually been made for kind of modern
game sensibilities.
Puzzles are easier to understand and not so
up you skate or anything like that. So

(06:22):
if you ever had want the chance to
play ribbon, this is
the best time of the world to do
it. You know, I don't real... I never
really played either of those.
Mh. And, yeah. I find a lot of
the puzzles to be, like,
not that tantalizing. They seem just kinda hard
to, like,
you really you really had to sort of

(06:44):
give yourself to that world.
And
you know, if you're into it great, if
you're not into it then It's like nothing's
gonna make you into it kinda of thing.
This is true. But you know, you see
where that
eventually went. Like, I feel like there's a
lot of that stuff and, like, when I

(07:05):
played the resident Evil 2 remake. I felt
like there a lot of, like, missed style
kinda puzzles?
Like... Is is that is that a fair
assessment?
Or is it quite different?
Well, there are some similarities. You know, obviously,
you know, it's kind of the same type
of gameplay play.
But it's been... There are more sensible out

(07:27):
of patients. It's not a point and click.
You can actually move in A3D environment, like
in a first person view, like, modern games
do.
Like it's it's all recreated in unreal engine
5.
Right. So you have that. So you can
control it with a controller.
Mouse keyboard,
vr headset, like I have a request 2.

(07:47):
And so you can you can use that
to play of the game It's it's absolutely
immersive.
And
it's much easier to play the game,
not just because the puzzles are kinda simplified
into less obscure
but it's actually just feels better.

(08:08):
Well, I have a quest too that I
haven't fired up been over a year, or
so maybe it might be a good,
excuse to fire it. How much is this
this R3D,
remake,
the current price right now. They're on... They're
actually
on sale 10 percent off right now at

(08:28):
31...
32 bucks right now, less than that? Yeah.
Okay. Well, you know, it's seems fair.
Mh.
I just spent a
ton of money on a esteem deck. So
I'm gonna
have to wait on the gaming,
but I'll tell you my steam deck story.
You've had 1 for for for a while

(08:49):
now.
I have. Yeah. I never really saw the
appeal I'm like, I have switch, I got
my Pc or whatever. But what I also
had was a hundred and 50 games backlog
on Switch, you know,
that I, most of which I've never played,
never even opened.
And I saw it as a good opportunity
to
you know, play some of those games and

(09:11):
have access to better quality mobile gaming on
the go because, you, honestly, the switch is
It's it's pretty old as 7 years old
now, I think.
Yeah. It came out in 20 17,
and it feels like it. Right? It just
feels like alright. Games don't feel as
sort of pep as

(09:33):
you know, some other systems.
Was right. Can pause 1 second. Gotta go
check on the dogs.
Okay.
Yeah. Sorry about that. I'm alone. I'll get
at home. So the dogs when they... Whenever
something walks by, they're like,
Oh, we gotta bark at that until it
goes away. And then get away, mark.

(09:55):
Anyway,
let me just put a little marker when
that happened.
Oh, I can see it. Anyway,
yeah. So
I figured I'd get a steam deck. My
birthday happened at Anime.
And
you know, it it...
I I waited quite a while to get
it, Like, it took like almost 2 weeks

(10:15):
to ship, maybe a week and a half.
Mh.
And then when it arrived, it arrived with
a second steam deck. I'm like, oh, crap
that I ordered you by mistake. This isn't
right. This is the kind of thing you
read about on reddit.
Like, oh, I guess what. It sent you
another 1.

(10:35):
No kidding.
Yeah. They sent me 2 steam decks.
So
I
thought about it for a millisecond and then
realize the right thing to do is to
let them know that they sent me an
extra 1 and
can I return it? Mh. And
sure enough to, like, oh, thank you so
much. We had a bunch that went out

(10:57):
duplicate.
In Canada or something whatever it was. Oh,
wow. So I had to send it back
and the... It was pretty easy to do.
I just put it, you know, Ups sticker
on it and Right. Some other stuff.
When they got it back, there, like, thank
you so much for returning that,
in appreciation
we'd like to offer you the game of

(11:19):
your choice on steam.
Oh
So I got a free game on steam.
I got El and ring on steam.
Hey. I mean,
make make it a good 1.
Always gives the gets. It pays to be
a good Samaritan and I guess. It pays
to be honest. It pays to be honest.
Yeah. Mh.
So, yeah, I've been loving that. And I

(11:41):
gotta say, thank you so much for helping
me with, the mu deck situation. I sort
had figured it out how to install it.
But.
You know, Am deck for those who don't
know is a way that you can
basically turn your steam deck into, like, an
emulation. So sort of powerhouse
and put all the cores that you need

(12:02):
on there and your library of legally obtained
backups.
Mh. And Rom hacks and such.
On the system and play them
at pretty good quality.
Right. So
I did that, but I clicked 1 wrong
button and suddenly, I had 7000

(12:22):
games in my steam library. And that was
no good. Was no bueno. I could not
find anything.
So... It's bad enough your library is as
big it as it is. We don't need,
like,
10 times the amount showing showing up and
you don't know how to assert through it.
Exactly. That's a... That's it. That's it. That
made my backlog program,
a problem go even worse.

(12:46):
So... Well, I glad to help. I'm glad
to help with that.
Well, it's great. I just opened emulation station
now and it's a really cool looking interface
and, like, I can't believe how amazing this
is. And I've been playing a lot of
a lot of,
like, retro stuff that I'm just like, oh,
try this game. I'll try that game.

(13:06):
First of which, I'm like, I gotta play
some Sega Saturn games. What Sega Saturn game
can I play?
The first 1 I fired up I think
is notoriously 1 of the worst games ever
released for that system or any system.
And it's the arrow Smith Rail shooter
revolution x.

(13:29):
Music is the of that. Okay. So it's
like
it's like any other rail shooter except. Mh.
You're shooting...
I think you're, like shooting Cds,
do you have a gun as well, but
you can also choose to shoot Cds,
like you get Cds and crates
and all the enemies look exactly the same.

(13:51):
And you're just sort of, like, going like,
through different, like, city scape or whatever, then
you end up in a club
and Aero Smith is playing.
Wow.
I didn't try and shoot Steven Tyler.
But there.
It was pretty funny. And then there was,
like, a batman, like, 3 d kind of
beat them up that was

(14:13):
very bad as well.
But yeah. I mean, it's a great system.
It's a great it's a great way to
play retro on the go and... Right.
The other cool thing that I've been doing
because at at the new place, I set
up my my nas and I expanded my
my, like, network attached storage at home.

(14:35):
Okay. So
1 of the things I did was I
set up a p
media player, like, media library.
So I can.
Stream
stuff from my Nas drive,
to my Apple Tv. And then I thought,
you know what I should do is have
network attached retro.

(14:56):
Because I have, you know,
2
laptops,
2 desktops,
Mh.
And the steam deck,
and I would love to just use the
network drive
as the drive for, like, have it all
in 1 place.
Right. I couldn't I couldn't really do that

(15:18):
with the steam deck, especially, like, if I
wanna take it on the go.
But Right. I put all the Rom
that I have in a on a Nas
drive, and I have all my... I haven't
it connected to all my, like,
retro,
on all my Pcs and and my Mac
laptops and stuff. And really awesome just to

(15:39):
have everything in 1 place.
So... Okay. So just make sure I'm understanding
it. So you have your you have your
Nas. You have all your rom located on
1 central place, and you're able to use
Retro arch to access that. Yes. Because I
can just attach that drive as a as
a network drive to any of my any
of my machines.

(15:59):
Wow. Yep.
It's... You're not really... It it seems like
you may not be able to play Retro
like, on the go and you're out about,
like, a in another part like, another part
of the city or something like that. Right?
No. I have them all in a on
an Sd card on the steam deck.
Okay. Okay. Yes. You kinda have a backup
plan. Yeah. But I was able to actually
transfer them over the network drive to the

(16:22):
steam deck that way too. Because I if
you go into, like, the desktop mode,
you can attach a network drive that way.
Oh, cool. So rather than having to put
them on a Usb and then
port them over. It's like,
just copy them off the network drive, and
it works out. Makes sense. Yeah. That makes
sense.

(16:43):
That's cool.
So the other thing I should, I mention
is I started contra 3,
the Alien wars that 1 of the notoriously,
most difficult
games for the Sn,
and boy oh boy has it been a
journey.
Loads up to its difficulty for sure. Yeah.
How do how have you been enjoying Contra

(17:03):
3? I didn't quite get it
off the bat just because the control scheme
is so much more complex.
Mh. Then, the original contra and Super sweet
on the Nes. Right. I've really I might
have been just, you know, inevitable, you know,
given that, hey, it's So else, let's try
some new cool things, you know? I I
gotta say that they're, like, I

(17:25):
I will always prefer the economy of a
2 button controller. Give me a, b, select
and start, you know? That's
I think you can do so much with
that.
And the Nes is, you know, proof of
that.
Even the Genesis like Sonic is basic Sonic
1 is like 1 button. Right?

(17:47):
Maybe there's 2. But
yeah, Like,
once... Because here... Yeah. The the difference with
Contra 3 is, like, you have 2 weapons.
So each arm gets a gun.
And you can switch between them.
Yes. He can can't get all strategic with
it. Yeah. So you can have, like, a

(18:08):
spread and then like a laser
and you can switch between. And if you
die, you still keep the other gun that
was on the other arm that you weren't
using.
Oh, gotcha. Yeah. So, you know, if you've
have it selected in your hand and do
you die. Well, guess what? Too bad? Yeah.
So so I quickly figured out that
the the c weapon, the crusher weapon is

(18:29):
the best weapon in the game, but it's
slow.
But if you quickly switch back between left
and right,
then you do you could... You can do
double damage,
and that makes a lot of bosses
basically free.
So that that was a that was a
nice little
thing to figure out. And,

(18:49):
but but the game is still
like, just rocking me every time I play
it.
Right.
I've made it to what I think is
the last level,
but not very far
in it.
But, yeah, like, it's been fun to, like,
practice a little bit on the steam deck.

(19:09):
Before my stream and then, like, get on
stream and then do it for real.
So, yeah. Take it out in the backyard.
No Just been, like,
playing either... You play either contra 3,
or
playing,
like, modern games on the steam deck. Like,
I I've I, I've been I'm still in
into bella like, crazy.
That still
Oh, man. That's, like, 90 percent of my

(19:31):
time on
on Bella appalachia Has been on the steam
deck. Like, it's
for, like, good good casual gaming like steam
deck has got it in spade. It's got
that
convenience, lets you relax on at you know,
and you're not in a chair. You could
be on the couch. You can be in
the lounge chair.
Yeah. It's real nice. It's real nice. The
other thing I did,

(19:52):
I have 2 gaming Pcs. I have 1
that's like a little older from, like, 20
18. But,
for most games that I play, like, the
Gpu is fine. It's like an old Vega
6 64, which is still a, you know,
it's still a fine Gpu for a lot
of stuff. So I hooked that up to
my big screen that I use for,
scoring.
And so that's become like my sort of

(20:14):
couch gaming thing.
I, I took. Because I moved in with
someone, And I just wanted to take all
my gaming stuff and, like, take it out
of the relationship equation. It's like, let's just
put this all downstairs,
He doesn't care about that. But mh. I
wanna be able to play playstation or switch
or whatever And
so I I have a big screen Tv

(20:36):
that I use as my, like, main monitor
for for when I'm composing.
So I I just have on another input.
I have my other game... Pc, and then
the Ps s 5
and the switch,
and
that's been really great for couch gaming in
the
in the retro lounge.

(20:59):
It's pretty good. So I got a question
for you. Come out. You know, kinda of
relates to all this. You know know.
So with, you know, having this steam deck
and have your your your gaming pc in
the living room, do, you know, with doing
a lot of emulation. Does it... Do you
think it dampen your enthusiasm
enthusiasm for original or
similar hardware?

(21:20):
Or is it just, you know, does it
feel better because it's more convenient
for you to access?
Good question. I'll I'll lead. I'll I'll just
lead away from that for 1 second to
come back to it because the other thing
I got myself.
Recently was the retro tank 4 k?
Yes. And let me tell you, like, I

(21:40):
didn't really get it at first. I'm like,
why did I spend this money for something
that, you know, when I I use it
on my stream and it basically looks
the same as my C. Pull In fact,
I think the Os feels a little sharper
to me for some reason.
Okay. In 10 80 p though,
when I hooked it up, to A4K
ultra Hd monitor,

(22:02):
like, oh, I get it now because
here's what here's the thing
And
I was
I was
made aware of this concept through, I watched
the lin tech tips video where he was
reviewing it.
So

(22:22):
excuse me.
Hdr,
like, high high brightness displays
have the ability to sort of
get pretty close to a Crt
in terms of, like, light coming light emitting.
Because that's what I love about the Crt
It's like super bright and just like,
like, a glass and just sort of, like,

(22:43):
it it just shoots right in your eyes.
And it's just like, yeah. All the movements
right in your face. Exactly.
So,
Led
Oled l, you know, all that stuff. It
doesn't... It never really came close for that,
but with all the filter masks that you
can do with the retro 4 k

(23:03):
in 4 k with Hdr,
Like,
if you didn't know you were looking at
a flat screen Tv,
like, you could maybe convince
somebody that they were, like, on a Crt
because... Look a giant Crt. Yeah. Like a
a giant 1.

(23:25):
Because, like, they've they've really
made it, like, a seamless
no like, 0...
Like, I I think I measured 2 milliseconds
of latency
on my setup,
compared to the Crt.
And it was like, you know, all the
little pixels, like,

(23:46):
the the filter mask and, like, the you
you see the individual lights
of each 1. And it just feels really
nice. And I I have a couple profiles
for for different ones including the Toshiba profile,
which I really like because I have a
Toshiba Crt.
Oh, okay. And they have some Pb ones,

(24:06):
it looks really good. Like, I I... And
that's a way that I can enjoy,
the old hardware stuff
on
a modern Tv, you know a, in a
way that I never was able to before.
The other cool thing I gotta say is
it works really well with my...

(24:29):
Analog
super nt.
And here's why yeah. Here's why. You know
what it can it can do,
analog sells this...
It's basically, like an Hdmi to
Rg g adapter.
Oh, a dac. Did analog converter? Yeah. So

(24:50):
the retro tank can act as a dac,
and it can fool the...
The super into thinking that it's a dac.
Oh
So it... Oh, that's. Yeah. You just hit
a button and then
you you have to... And then you reset
the super tea, and it's outputting in native,
like, 02:40 p resolution.

(25:13):
Oh, how about that? Yeah. It's really cool.
I really kinda using the retro to
upscale it and then downs scale it back.
Well, the retro tank... Yeah. Is
it's ups scaling...
Okay. A 02:40 p signal. Mh basically.
So, that's been really cool. I really wanna
use it with a a mister.

(25:34):
That's my next thing is if I can
move.
I can save up for a mister, that
would be cool to have
because that's basically all the cores.
But for now, I just basically have my...
If I have my super tea in the
living room,
in a little in a little drawer, and
I pull it out sometimes and and and
get up to that Tv.

(25:56):
And sometimes they'll bring the retro tank 4
k up, and it looks amazing. So that's
awesome. Yeah. But, like. Honestly, like,
I think I...
It still feels different to me than gaming
on a Crt just for the... You know,
there's a nostalgia factor. There's this sort of
tactile,
just look and feel of that experience.

(26:18):
Mh. But I think that like more ways
to enjoy retro is always good, and there's
not better or worse, like everything has its
pros and cons. I think You know, Like,
real hardware, Og hardware is always gonna be
Og hardware. It's always gonna be, like the
gold standard, but it's not portable.
It's not reliable.

(26:38):
Mh It's not cheap.
No.
It's definitely not cheap these days.
I mean, at 1 point it used to
be, but then, you know, I'm really lucky
change. I'm really lucky I bought most of
my consoles.
Right at the start of Covid
before everything just went through the roof. And
now I feel like it's coming back down
again. But things are getting weirdly ex expensive,

(27:00):
like, I heard that Xbox 03:60
games and and and the xbox 03:60 itself
is like skyrocketing in value.
Collectors
point of view. I'm not getting rid of
mine.
Yeah. That's the 1
1 console. What are the few that I'd
don't have. I don't have 1 of those.
I don't have a gamecube

(27:22):
because the we just is a gamecube.
I don't need I don't need a gamecube
if I have a wee. Don't That's I
right? That's true. Yeah. The same thing. Completely
backwards compatible. Yeah. On the we. Same with
the Wii u, you can force it. To
enable gamecube,
native compatibility with,
with the

(27:42):
the jail break that you can do with
to it, which I've done.
Oh, wow. Yeah. But I... Like, honestly, like
I
gamecube games are the pretty much the only
games that Haven't really tried.
I never I never, like, it's sort of
the the kinda no man's land from my
sort of experience of retro games haven't And
I know that for you, it's probably 1

(28:03):
of the most
beloved systems
for for people, like, that we know, like,
Jimmy Loves gamecube stuff.
He does. Yeah.
The 1
game that I just bought,
which I'm excited to play on the switch.
Is the
thousand you thousand your door,

(28:24):
open mario. Yeah. Yeah. So I had a
I had a voucher left, and I'm like
I better use this before they cancel it
or it expire. I don't know if they
expire. But I saw that game. I'm like,
well, I can use the voucher for that.
Might as well.
So I'll probably play that on stream at
some 0,
that'd would be cool. It should be cool.

(28:45):
I've never played thousand new door. I played
the original, people want Mario for the n
64,
but I've never played any of the sequels
actually. Right. Yeah. Jimmy trying to get me
was trying to get me to play the
original for N 64.
I should probably do that,
you know, so much to play that. Right?
It is fun. It's pretty humorous.
Think you'll get a couple definitely some laughs

(29:07):
out of that.
I think for me, there's there's a bit
of a disconnect because,
it's kind of a spiritual successor to the
original super supermarket Rpg. And that's still so
much of a, an impactful gain for me.
That's very hard to to
transition from that to Paper Mario. U. Yeah.

(29:28):
Because it... Paper Is considered kind of the
spiritual successor to Mario Rpg. But,
what about the the super superstar saga? Is
that sort of in in the same
In the same lineage?
Can't... No. Not really. It's kind of its
own thing.
Okay. I somebody had just told me that,

(29:49):
Oh,
so sorry. Say that again. I'm sorry. Somebody
had just told me that if I like
Super Mario,
Rpg, it's sort of
super superstar saga.
Superstar saga
was kind of in the same vein and
maybe by some of the same people. III
might be getting that wrong though. So...
Well,

(30:10):
in a way, it's kind of a successor
to Super Mario
Rpg. It's it's kind of a mis mash
in a way as far as legacies go.
Yeah. I I consider it more of its
own thing,
more so because of the nature of how
it... Controls,
control each brother.
And and that it's its total the mechanical
gameplay. Like, the a button was for, like,

(30:31):
Mario and the B button is for Luigi
controls. Interesting.
Yeah. And they... They... You know, the Mario
and Luigi games are famous for that method
of gameplay. Button started on the Gb went
to the Ds. Right
Know? Okay. Yes. So that makes a lot
more sense. So I sorry is started.
Is more the the successor than.

(30:52):
Yeah. Paper Mario is closer to being a
successor to the original Super mario Rpg. Cool,
Mario and g. Games. Do you think I
should play the original paper Mario?
Actually, have you played thousand year da? I
have never... I never played thousand Okay. I
played the original. Okay. But I think it
is worth playing. It it it... You know,
it is

(31:12):
fun, in its own way. It's, you know,
is it a long... It was just harder
for me to
except, you know, liking it. And what I
did enjoy it. I... It's like, this is
actually really good. Is it a long game?
Candy. There's some... There's some side quests, you
know, to do, but it's about as long
as any other, you know, Rpg kinda there.

(31:34):
Again, like, the only thing that that's preventing
me from playing it right now on stream
is
is the the super fans.
Like, I I just can't. Mh. I can't
do another game on stream
that has
a legion of fans just just waiting
you know, with bait breath, like, for me
to to say, I love your game. It's

(31:56):
so amazing
because I wasn't there when I I wasn't
9 years old and playing the fucking game
in my basement
with grandpa watching or whatever. Like, I'm an
old man
just try to, like, have some fun playing
a video game. And I might not like
it, and that's okay.

(32:17):
I think you would... You're more like pleased
to get that with thousand your door, maybe
then the original paper Mario. Yeah.
Paper... The original paper mario isn't
for lack of a better term, isn't as
beloved as thousand your door is. Right. But
I still think it's worth playing.
It really
is its own

(32:40):
story and and and mechanics, It it it's
just its own thing, and I think that's
what makes it fun.
It's own brand of humor that kinda carried
over into the rest of the paper Mario
games, the art style, obviously.
As the start of that. But, yeah, I
think III think it would be worth playing
paper Mario
n 64.

(33:00):
Cool.
Anything else we should
talk about
on the other. Let's see here.
I think,
you know, what's funny? Speaking of Mario.
There's a Youtuber out there,
who's
who's porting Super mario 64

(33:21):
to the game boy advance.
What?
Right? That was viable.
Oh
that's there's a there's a video evidence, sir.
Yeah. This Youtuber Joshua Moreno, he's trying to
he's attempting... It's not complete. Like, it's a
work in progress. Yeah. He's trying to write

(33:42):
to Super Mario 64 port for the game
advance.
And let me tell you It is Jan
as all heck.
It's not pretty. Okay. Well, there you go.
Yeah. It's
it's not like
revolutionary or anything like that. Oh, he it's
it started off as Mario as, like a
red triangle

(34:03):
that eventually they started incorporating
Mario and the animation movements into it.
But, no. It's it's quite Lag, Jan.
And the graphics kind of,
remind me a bit more of, like, the
super
chip graphics for this nest like, Star Fox
and Stun race effects.
Yeah. It really does mario.

(34:24):
So
to fun a little bit of history. We'll
lay it in the, in the show and
the show notes for y'all, just to check
it out. But
yeah. It's more of a recent development. He's
starting it. And III
can't wait to see where it goes, you
know, with bait breath. I wanna see what
the end result looks like.
I... It reminds me of, I watched the

(34:46):
video where this guy,
k a emmanuel?
I think is his name? Or it k
or Ka. I don't know. Yeah. He basically
opened up the Sm m 64 source code
and fixed it. He's like, this is broken.
This is so inefficient. We can get this
working way better
he got, like,

(35:07):
like, a way more consistent,
like, constant Fps... Average Fps
sort of value.
Oh, wow. And just like,
made the code much more efficient using modern
programming techniques and you... And and you'd be
surprised that some of the, like,
some of the crap that just got through

(35:30):
like, just stuff that's wrong.
Stuff that's just bulky and just bloated
and it's just because because there's so much
to do in every frame.
Right? With A3D game. And it's 1 of
the first
you know, 1 of the first 3 d
games for that nintendo did. Right? If not
first.

(35:52):
Like, besides like Star fox, obviously,
so
yeah, it's it's it's a really good watch.
I I think it came at about 2
years ago. Link that in the show notes
as well.
Yeah.
So, yeah. Speaking of, like,
3 d
there's this 1 that I just discovered just

(36:13):
before we start the the start the recording
tonight here. Mh.
There
there's a there's a person called Wise guy
who's making a program
that takes an N instinct 6 4
game.
And rec compile it for the Pc. Basically
takes all the code
and reprogram it into the c programming language.

(36:36):
Which allows a pc to compile it into
an executable program.
That's so cool.
Right. I it isn't taking like weeks to
do is taking, like, minutes to do or
something like that. It's a work in progress,
and they're they're first working on it with,
like, major majority mask. Right. Zelda.

(36:56):
But I think this is this is really
cool. Like, it allows you to do, like,
widescreen screen.
Upscale,
maybe ups upscale graphics, higher frame rate, like,
60 Fps stuff like that.
Yeah. Like, native 06:60
f feet exactly. Stuff. Yeah. That's really cool.
It's it's... Yeah. It's not out yet, but

(37:19):
the video footage that I've scene. I'll link
it in the show. Notes, Sp because people...
I think people need to see this. This
is... You, you won't talk about redo redux.
Yeah, man. This is this is it right
here. Yeah.
For sure, for sure.
Awesome curb. Well, I I think we had
a pretty successful episode for you know, being
a bit rusty.
Let's keep it up.

(37:39):
Yeah. Let's do it next week. Let's get
Jimmy back on the show
for a couple episodes if we can if
he's around.
Absolutely. And until then,
I wish you the best, I'll see around
on the Internet.
And
yeah, to everyone else out there and to
you curb, keep on gaming.

(38:00):
We'll, keep on gaming. See all next time.
Bye bye.

Boysober

Have you ever wondered what life might be like if you stopped worrying about being wanted, and focused on understanding what you actually want? That was the question Hope Woodard asked herself after a string of situationships inspired her to take a break from sex and dating. She went "boysober," a personal concept that sparked a global movement among women looking to prioritize themselves over men. Now, Hope is looking to expand the ways we explore our relationship to relationships. Taking a bold, unfiltered look into modern love, romance, and self-discovery, Boysober will dive into messy stories about dating, sex, love, friendship, and breaking generational patterns—all with humor, vulnerability, and a fresh perspective.
