Hey, thank you for listening into risky benefits, a podcast
that informs you on all thingsbenefits.
We've got a saying around here.
Benefits isn't your mainbusiness.
It's ours.

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_16 (00:16):
Hi,

marketing_1_03-20-2025_164 (00:18):
And, thank you so much for coming on.
On this episode of RiskyBenefits, we have Betty Galan,
who is with the Jackson HealthFoundation.
And we are so excited to haveher tell us about their upcoming
event and a little bit about whoshe is.
So why don't we start with youdoing an introduction for our
listeners on who you are andwhat your role is at

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_ (00:40):
sure.
Well, first of all, thank youfor having us.
We're really, really excited.
To be here, you are longtimepartners of the Jackson Health
Foundation, the Jackson HealthSystem.
So thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
My name is Betty Galan.
Like you said, I am theExecutive Director of
Development for the JacksonHealth Foundation.
For those of you who don't know, the Jackson Health Foundation is

(01:02):
the fundraising arm of theJackson Health System.
What does that mean?
That means that we raise money, for anything and everything
outside of the scope of what Thehospital gets, via bond monies
or what have you, there's asignificant gap between what
they receive and their actualoperating budget.

(01:23):
We assist with some of that.
We are not a large group.
We're small, but mighty.
And we raise, we raise money forthe health system that being
said, we raise money for all ofit.
That means that we raise moneyfor all of our independent
costs, like independent standinghospitals, which include homes,
children's behavioral health.

(01:44):
Lynn Rehab, Jackson Memorial,Jackson North, Jackson South,
Jackson West, all of our urgentcare centers, and then anything
and everything in between,right?
So we raise money for programswithin those hospitals.
So for example, we can have adonor that might tell us, we
want to fundraise for.

(02:06):
Breast cancer.
Well, we have a breast healthcenter here on the main campus.
So we would direct the donor todo an awareness or an activity
surrounding that event.
So not only do we represent thehospital, the health system, but
also the programs and everythingthat runs inside.
Separately from that, we do acouple of events throughout the

(02:27):
year.
We're kind of lean and mean.
On April 3rd, though, we do havea very special initiative.
It's really not an event as muchas it is, you think about it as
a campaign.
So the way that we kind ofcompare it is to like a Give
Miami Day, where people gettogether and give to their

(02:48):
nonprofit of choice.
Well, in this case.
It is one day for Jackson.
That is it.
It is one day dedicated toJackson Health System.
So that is happening on April3rd and what we're doing is it's
really a grassroots type ofMovement.
We're working with our donors.
We're working with individuals, with facilities, with

(03:09):
organizations, with other nonprofits.
Everybody has a Jackson story.
We know that and we want toamplify those voices in the
community.
And we want to raise money.
We want to raise money fordifferent projects.
One of the biggest projects thatwe're working on raising money
for right now is our newemergency room.

(03:30):
Yeah, it is quite theundertaking.
If you've been on campus andyou've visited our emergency
room here at Jackson Memorial, you know, it is.
So we are going to be building athree story emergency room here
at Jackson Memorial that oncecompleted will be the largest

(03:50):
emergency room in the nation.
So that is one of the thingsthat our one day dollars are
going for.
Separately from that, so manymiracle stories.
I mean, it's really, it's daily.
It's our tagline, right?
Making miracles happen.
Nobody makes miracles happens asmuch as Jackson does.

(04:14):
We know we have the WriterTrauma Center.
We know we're one of the topnotch trauma facilities in the
nation.
So, we're just lucky here inSouth Florida that we have this
facility in our backyard.
Not everybody has that claim tofame, let's say.
So, that's kind of where we as afoundation kind of fit in and

(04:37):
also what the event is that's onApril 3rd, which again is called
One Day for Jackson.
We do.
We do.
We do.

marketing_1_03-20-2 (04:45):
incredible.
And it sounds like you have alot on your plate to help, to
help with all of that.
But what an amazing, you know,it's amazing experience to be a
part of.
I mean, I'm sure that you hearjust some incredible stories on
how, what you guys are doing canhelp people.
Individuals and families.
And I'm sure those miraclesreally do

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_1 (05:05):
They really do.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_1 (05:06):
That's

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_1641 (05:07):
I encourage your listeners, to
familiarize themselves with OneDay for Jackson.
They can go to the website andit's one day for Jackson dot o r
g.
That's one day for Jackson dotorg.
And there's a lot of, there's alot of information there, right?
You're going to see, about theinitiative, different events
that are going on.
I'll speak a little bit moreabout that, but one of the tabs

(05:29):
is miracle stories.
So you can see our miraclestories and kind of read about
the patient's lives.
That we've touched.

marketing_1_03-20-2 (05:40):
incredible.
I can't wait to go on and lookat

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_ (05:42):
Yeah,

marketing_1_03-20-2025_ (05:42):
stories myself.
So the listeners, I'm sure itwill be very interested to see
some of those.
Can you tell us a little bitabout how, you know, I know they
can go on the website, but howcan people get involved
otherwise?
Are there

betty-galan_1_03-20 (05:54):
absolutely.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_16414 (05:54):
to donate or to, you know, do
different initiatives to

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_1 (05:58):
Yes.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_1641 (05:58):
the event?

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_164 (05:59):
So many options really.
So when you visit one day forJackson.
org, you're going to see abutton that says donate.
You can donate any, no amount istoo small.
We always say, you can go inthere, you can donate.
You can also look at who ourpartners are and you can also go
to the events page.
This is important.
Why?
Because Let's say Vicki bakery.

(06:22):
So Vicki bakery is one of ourpartners and they're also
hosting a quote unquote eventthat day What what they're
hosting is they're doing like apercentage back from all the
guava pastries sold that day soHey, you might already go to
Vicky Bakery, so maybe you go toVicky Bakery, you buy a guava
pastry.

(06:42):
So, 10 percent of your donationthat day is going back to us.
Separately from that, we havegyms that are involved that are
doing a percentage off onclasses.
We have, municipalities that areinvolved, like City of Doral,
City of Hialeah, that aregetting together with their
employees, they're getting theword out.
To the residents, Chick fil ahere in downtown chillin five

(07:07):
guys is one of our biggestsupporters last year.
They actually donated 20 percentof all their proceeds from all
their Miami Dade County stores.
So that is, that's huge.
So I encourage you to go look atour partners, look at our
events.
There's so many different waysto get involved.
I mean, you might, you know, youmight start your day with a

(07:27):
cafecito somewhere and then getlunch and then end the day with
a Pilates session.
Just so many different, right?
Exactly.
What a great day.
So there's just so manydifferent ways to get involved.
And of course, Making adonation.
That would be a great way aswell.
And there's also and theresources tab.

(07:48):
If you go there and you and youactually just click on
resources.
You can actually find a thingthat's called a Brand Toolkit
and it's under the tab that saysIndividuals.
And it's got pre approvedgraphics, it's got pre approved
wording.
Share it on your social mediachannels.

(08:08):
Say, I'm supporting Jackson andOne Day for Jackson and the
actual image will be there.
You can copy, paste it and useit.
So, it's really a day where, again, amplify our voice.
Everybody has heard of Jackson.
Not everybody knows exactly whatwe do.
So this is our opportunity toeducate.

(08:29):
Everyone in Miami, and we knowthat here in Miami, our
population is constantlychanging.
So there are a lot of peoplethat are new to Miami that
really don't know who Jacksonis.
So this is our opportunity tobring the messaging.
Our mission to serve everybodyin Miami Dade County, regardless
of their ability to pay, andshare that message with

(08:51):
everyone.

marketing_1_03-20-2 (08:54):
Absolutely.
Thank you for the work that youguys are doing.
And I know that everyone will beso interested to learn how it
goes.
And actually, can you tell us alittle bit about how long have
you guys been doing this

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_164 (09:06):
So yeah, this is our second year
doing the event.
Last year we did it.
And right out the gates, weactually raised, were able to
raise 550, 000.
So this year, the goal is toraise a million.
So we are really, really, reallyputting our best foot forward
trying to, and you know, anotherthing is, Some of your listeners

(09:28):
may be affiliated with, I don'tknow, their kid's school.
Miami Dade County Schools is apartner as well this time
around.
We're encouraging the kids todo, to take active steps for
Jackson.
And they can get pledges andwhat have you.
Your kids might need communityservice hours and they might
need, they can share themessaging, they can do

(09:50):
fundraisers, some of yourlisteners might know somebody
who owns a restaurant or a carwash or a dry cleaner, share the
messaging.
So these are all ways you canget involved.
Our goal is really to be asintegrated in the community as
possible and really the goalthis year is to raise.
1, 000, 000.

(10:10):
So essentially doubling ourefforts from last year,

marketing_1_03-20-2025_16 (10:16):
Well, I hope that you guys have a very
successful day.

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_1641 (10:21):
I know.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_1641 (10:21):
you

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_1641 (10:21):
I hope so too.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_164 (10:23):
Yes.
What about, are there any otherinitiatives that our listeners
should know

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_164 (10:29):
Oh yeah, we have, signature events.
We do one, event in the month ofNovember, the guardian angels
luncheon, you've all supportedthat.
And that really supports ourHoltz children's hospital and
our pediatric efforts thathappens usually around
Thanksgiving time.
And then one of our very popularinitiatives is the holiday toy

(10:51):
drive that happens, it kind ofkicks off simultaneously with
the luncheon and runs throughthe holidays and, we request an
open toys and we really make areally good effort with holds
children's hospital.
We don't necessarily deliver thetoys to the kids.
We actually set up a store.

(11:12):
Where we allow parents andfamily members to come and shop
on their, their children'sbehalf.
And that's because we reallywant to integrate them in the
process.
We understand they're here tooduring the holidays.
It gives them the opportunity tofeel involved.
We allow them to gift wrap theirgifts.
That's a great event.

(11:33):
We're always looking forvolunteers to help gift wrap.
We don't give wrap all the toys, but we do give wrap some.
So that's, that's an excellentevent.
And that's a great way ofgetting involved, whether you're
here on site or not, because youcan always.
Post a toy drive.
You can do that in your family.
You can do that among yourfriends.
You can do that in school placeof worship.

(11:54):
I mean, you can do that anywhereand everywhere.
You can do that in the lunchroomat your employment.
You know, you can do thatanywhere.
So that's another big one.
And then we also have in themonth of April.
So, on April 26, we're going tobe celebrating our annual Golden
Angels Gala, and this is our bigsignature event of the year
where we celebrate theaccomplishments of the health

(12:17):
system as a whole.
So that is a big event.
We recognize a lot of ourmiracle stories are recognized
there, and it's really just abig thank you to our supporters
and those that have really shownup for us throughout the year.
Throughout the year.

marketing_1_03-20-2025 (12:38):
amazing.
I, I commend you guys for

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_ (12:41):
Thank you.
That's

marketing_1_03-20-2025_1641 (12:42):
and I hope that April 3rd, one day
for Jackson is

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025 (12:47):
right.
Thank you.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_1641 (12:49):
And the event after that on April
26th.
I know that that one will begreat as well.
And then maybe we'll do a

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_ (12:55):
Sure.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_16414 (12:56):
in the year as we get close to that
Thanksgiving and the holiday toydrive.
I, I know our listeners wouldprobably love to

betty-galan_1_03-20 (13:01):
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Well, thank you so much forhaving me.
I really appreciate it.
If your listeners have anyquestions, they can get in touch
with me through you.
I'm willing to answer questions, whatever they need.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_1641 (13:15):
And again, for everyone who's
listening, the website is oneday for Jackson dot org.
So please go on and take a lookand see how you can get
involved.
See how you can, you know whatyou're able to do on a donation.
Anything and everything would beappreciated.
So thank you so much, everyone.

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_ (13:32):
Thank you.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_16414 (13:34):
We wish you guys a

betty-galan_1_03-20-2025_1 (13:35):
Bye.

marketing_1_03-20-2025_164 (13:36):
