After a brief three-year absence, Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival is making its grand return for its 50th Anniversary. Taking place Sept 2 and 3 in Seattle, this unique Arts-forward music festival celebrates inclusivity and community, and we've got festival organizers Steven Severin and James Miles to talk to us about the focus and determination it takes to present an event on such a grand scale. An esteemed local venue owner, Steven is the Co-President of festival producer New Rising Sun and James, aka Fresh Professor -- a career educator with a novel approach -- is the Executive Director of Third Stone, the non-profit arts and education arm of Bumbershoot. This dynamic duo have set forth to bring a decidedly local flavor to a festival that also features major musical acts this year such as Sleater-Kinney, Sunny Day Real Estate, Brittany Howard, The Revivalists, Durand Jones and Fatboy Slim, among others. "Celebrating what it means to be an artist," Steve and James talk about how important it is to not only entertain the audience, but to support the community and make music and the arts not only accessible to all, but how to embed the concept of inclusivity into a long-standing community-based festival. It's a wonderful new era for Bumbershoot and we are here for it. So join us for this special episode and learn more about this impressive and exciting festival as we venture into the Great Northwest for the 50th Anniversary edition of the Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival. It's gonna be a great ride!!

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
