Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, either the Troit Wheels.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Hi.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
It's Gary Hoey, Gary Hoey. It's good to talk to you,
my friend.

Speaker 3 (00:05):
Hey, my buddy Gary. How you doing, my man? I
see you got a brand new record there, brother.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yes, I'm doing good, my friend, and good to hear
you and excited for the new album. Absolutely yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
The new album is called Avalanche, and I got to
tell you this thing is flat out good. I got
a chance to listen to it last night, the title
track on YouTube, and brother, I may have said this
to you before for other recordings that you've done, but
this is by far superior than anything you have put

(00:37):
out to date.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Thank you, my friend. I appreciate it so much. Thank you. Man.
I worked hard on that song, and you know, it
was definitely a labor of love and having everybody involved
in my son and just you know, it's it's just
a thrill to have it finally out because it took
a lot of time to get this record out between
you know, COVID, losing my mom and my sister and

(01:01):
just going through all the stuff that we went through.
I came out the other side and I said, you
know what, I felt like I got hit by an avalanche.
So I'm ready to do this.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Well, well, I was going to ask where the title
came from and look at that that because it's like perfect.
But there's something about the whole mood of that video
and the guitar sound that just is is like a
new Gary Howey approach. I mean, it is really solid, strong,

(01:30):
heavy duty blues rock blues. So it's the first album
you put out in six years. Congrats on that you
But I read that you got it all started through
a Kickstarter campaign. I think we talked about that, if
I'm not mistaken.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
During Christmas, Yeah, I decided, you know, the album was
taking a long time. I had lots of different obstacles,
and I think it might be in my bio. I
came in the studio one day, my hard drive was
not on the desktop and a lot of the music
just went away in a hard drive crash. So I
do taking care of my mom. I wasn't really backing

(02:09):
up my hard drives like I normally do. I just
forgot and so I had to kind of start the
record over and get it done. And that was a
you know, an undertaking, and so I just went to
the label and I said, listen, you know I just
want to put this record on my own, put it
out on my own instead of doing it with my
European label, and they're really great people, and I just said,
I want to do kind of a quick thing, get

(02:30):
it out, and so I did a kickstart with the
fans and they all just jumped in and you know,
bought pre copies and it kind of financed me making
this record. And it's really awesome.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Yeah, it really is.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
And it's coming out tomorrow as a matter of fact,
on May ninth. You'll have CD versions and vinyl versions.
Congratulations on that as well, so you can order it
through Garyhoey dot com. I see here and you touched
on it real quickly. Your son Ian is on this,
your niece Tyla is on this, and Leada Ford is

(03:05):
is on here, So tell me a little bit about each.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah. Absolutely. I mean having my son on it was
a great thing because I wrote a song for my
mom called Dian Mama, and he played on the track
and did all the guitar work and solos and just
really brought it to a cool level and for his grandma.
And then my niece came in and sang with me
on the same song and she you know, was standing
there realizing she's the daughter of my sister who passed

(03:31):
away from cancer, and we're both realizing we lost our
moms together and just singing the song, and so it
really brought it to a family affair, got us all
through this and the album became a very therapeutic thing
for me, my family. And then having Leada Ford, who
we just finished a record together that's going to be
coming out. I worked with her and Max Norman, a

(03:52):
great producer engineer, mixed it. So I brought him on
this record, which I think is some of what you're
hearing is, you know, getting the help from other people,
and Lida just saying, you know, I would is the
song and she's sang it unbelievable. Really, I'm so happy
and proud to have her on it.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
But you're singing unbelievable too.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
And I remember when you first sang on an early
you know what of your early recordings and I mentioned
it to you and you were so grateful. Oh, Doug,
you know, I normally don't sing, and now the confidence
in your voice, you can just hear it.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
It is solid.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Obviously, you know these songs they come from the soul
and the Heart.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
But boy, I'll.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Tell you there's no question about that. You've got confidence
in your vocals these days.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Right, yeah, thank you man. You know, I think it's
you know, from the years of singing and just doing
it and doing it as one thing. But when I
went from the kind of blues rock thing back to
what I was considering more rock than blues, you know,
getting that energy out there. I had been through so
much with my family and just everything going on that

(04:58):
I felt like I my mojo for a minute, like
I couldn't find my footing. It was a weird thing, Doug.
You've known me for decades, and like you know, music
just didn't feel right. It felt robotic. I was just
doing it, but I wasn't really feeling it. And then
when I went into do Avalanche, I just felt like,
you know what, I got hit by an avalanche. So
this track has to deliver that sense of like, you know,

(05:21):
no daylight to be found, but yet we're going to
break through and we're going to be okay. So when
I went into singing it, I kind of psyched myself
out into thinking I was like Sammy Hagar or somebody,
and I just faked it. I just did it, and
I'm like, you know, I can do it, man, And
I just kind of psyched myself out. I never would
sing like that. My family and friends were like, is

(05:43):
that you And that's just you know, I think my
heart was just like ready to break three if you
know what I'm saying. You know, my energies were just like,
I'm going to take this on.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
You know, well, anybody that goes through a family crisis
like you just did has to realize and feel, uh
what you're feeling and what you're thinking and and you know,
and how you poured it out in your music, which
is great. A lot of people don't have that opportunity
to uh, you know, to express their you know, their sorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
The way that you were able to do. And and yet,
oil boy, I'll tell you this is a rock and record.
It's heavy.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Dude.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
You got your guitar.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
There, Yeah, I do. I got my guitar right because I.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Want to hear that lead to avalanche if you could
light into that. And I highly recommend that people go
to YouTube and check out the video because the video
is badass. I got to find out who are those
guys in the band. By the way, on the video.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
My son playing guitar. Okay, my son Ian is on
guitar with harm Yeah and Leah Blue. Leah Blue, well,
he has the short curly head. That's my son, okay.
And then Leah Leah Bluestein is the drummer she also
plays in the Eagles of Death Metal and the bass
player with the long hair, that's her. That's her, Mike
Duckgo Okay.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
I gotta tell you that's a good looking banned All right, well,
crank it up, here we go.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
You know, I heard a little grinch in there. You
know there's a little little meanness in there.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah. Absolutely, Well it's comes from that crunch and just
the break in the rift. I think you're right, there's
a little crinch.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
But but it made me think, wow, this is even
better than that. So yeah, congratulations Gary, and I can't
wait to hear the rest of the songs.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
And by the way, he people can go to the
website too, Gary Hooey dot com. You got some great
merchandise on there as well, though, hoodies, the T shirts.
I mean you, you've really gone all out for this
album and you can just tell that it's it's a
labor of love. I think that's that's the best way
I could put it, probably right, it is, you.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Know, and having a record like this that I can
toll with my son. You know, he's coming on tour
with me on stage to play these songs, and you know,
he's done a few of the songs he's featured. You know.
It's like when I look at the album cover alone
and I see those blue skies and I'm on the
top of the mountain, it just feels like, Yeah, the
end of a long journey, and yeah, to be able

(08:41):
to go out there and play the music live. There's
several songs that have stories of you know what, what's
going on, and I think the fans are connected to that,
and it's helping me too. It's really good.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Yeah, nothing like a little you know, therapeutic relief.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, and doing it with your guitar. I love that.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
So I I think it was my friend Derek Saint Holmes,
of course from the old Ted Nuga band, who was
doing some rock and roll camps or cruises. I don't know,
did you run into Derek somewhere? I know you did
a cruise here recently, a rock cruise.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, Derek, I mean Derek and I have done several
rock camps together. Love him. He's so amazing as a
person and an artist. And then we we've done we
did some. We did a couple of things where I
played together with him on stage and we did Stranglehold
and different songs like that, and he's still so amazing.
And the rock Legends cruise. I think we I haven't

(09:40):
done that with him yet, but I think we're planning to.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
You got some tour dates here. I see Gary Howey,
but I'm.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Looking you see.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
Florida, New York City, Massachusetts, California, pretty much own Florida, Arizona.
Where's the Detroit rock date?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
I know, where's my have a Lance show in Detroit?
I know, I know this is crazy. Actually, my agents
are putting a bunch of dates together right now, so
I know we're going to hit our Midwest and Detroit
dates for the Avalanche tour. We have to.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
Oh absolutely, I got a feeling you're gonna be with
this record. You're gonna be touring for a quite a while. Yeah,
And more than likely they'll what they'll do here is
they'll they'll get you in here closer to Christmas, so
they can not only get the Avalanche tour, but the
Christmas Tour as well. You know. So is this something
you think could find its way to like the blues

(10:42):
charts or I mean, sadly, I don't know what's going
on with the rock charts these days, so you can't
predict that. But I could see this flying up the
blues charts for sure.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yes, absolutely, I have a feeling it's gonna it's gonna
land on the blues charts in the coming days. And
being you know, being that I've been on the chart
of the blues the last few records, and that it
does have that bluesy rock feel, I'm assuming that's where
we're gonna land. And I'm with you, man, Mamestreet rock.
I don't really know what it is anymore.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
No, no, I'm not sure it's out there, but boy,
i'll tell you right now. But there's any Bold radio
stations left in America that plays current music, it would
be it would behoove them to put this one on,
because it really it catches the ear. Boy, it looks good,

(11:35):
it sounds good, and it rocks, and it's got everything
in it, including a lot of love. There Gary Hoy,
So once again big congratulations on Avalanche, first new album
in six years. Go to Garyhoey dot com to pick
it up. It comes out tomorrow. And just how great
is that? Man, your son, your niece, lead a Ford

(11:57):
all on there. That's a big record, brother, and you
You've earned it. And congratulations, thank you my friend.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
I appreciate it so much. It absolutely feels like, you know,
a great thing after all this work, and I'm so thankful.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
And after all that heartache to my friend.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
And yeah, absolutely, you know it's okay out there people.
We can we can feel joy again, you know, don't
don't stay in that dark place, man, keep walking.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Well, if we don't see you this summer, I'm pretty
sure we'll see it, you know, right around Christmas time.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Absolutely, I can't wait. And this will be my thirtieth
anniversary for the whole Holy Tour, thirty years. So I'm
gonna have a new record out to go with.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
This tour, a new Christmas record.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yeah, I'm gonna have a new Christmas record. I'm working
on a bunch of really cool songs and we're gonna
have a new one.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
I think we talked about that.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah, that is great, awesome, that is gonna be Wow,
it's gonna be a big year. Twenty twenty five, gonna
be a big year for Gary Hoy.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Yes, yes, I'm excited for sure.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
All Right, well, thank you Gary Hoey and everybody go
out there and check out the new album Avalanche, and
thanks for rocking with Detroit Wheels.
