Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, Hi, their Detroit Wheels.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Hey, this is Mark Wilson.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Mark, Mark Wilson for the band Jet, and it's great
to talk to you and welcome back to the Motor City.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
How are you good?

Speaker 1 (00:10):
I am good, And it's good to see Jet is
coming back the North American Tour twenty twenty five. It's
going to hit the Fillmore here in Detroit on June
the sixth, and the Band of Skulls are going to
be with you, another good band, so it's going to
be a great double bill.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
So yeah, you're looking forward again to the Detroit I
haven't been there in a while, so we're excited. We
haven't done a big tour in the States in quite
some years, so we're excited to come back and placing No.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
For real, I mean it's like the rise, the fall,
and the rise again of Jet. Yeah, you're going to
have to put a book out when all is said
and done about how many times you put this band
back together. But these are the songs Mark Wilson that
will not die. I mean, congratulations.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, if we're if you're watching the NBA or something
over here, and then well on in the morning over here,
but you still hear them pumping Jet songs in the stadium,
you know, during the time outs and stuff like that,
like after twenty twenty years after putting them out, So
it's it's pretty cool. I mean, look, we always had
a really great following in the States and we worked

(01:24):
hard there. We spent a lot of the time there.
We made all of our records there, so you know,
it holds a special place in our hearts and we
you know, we did a few shows, like late last year,
we did two in New York, one in Nashville, and
two in LA just to see if you guys still cared,
and it seems you did, so we were like, well,
let's do it. Let's book a big tour, and you know,

(01:46):
we're just sort of doing sort of more eastern side
of the country on this run and then hopefully back
to do it a sort of one more west run
later in the year.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yeah, you may be getting more more airplane now then
you did when these songs came out in two thousand
and three, in the early two thousands.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Kind of come back, yeah, I mean that's great to
know for us, you know, I mean they're still pumped
in the radio here in Australia too, and in the UK,
I guess, I guess. I mean they're good songs, and
good songs carry on, you know, like they'd ever die.
They just you know, and after some time away, people
start rediscovering things we're found like in here in Australia.

(02:28):
And then we did a big two of the UK
and Europe late last year as well our fan base,
and we put those songs out twenty years ago and
people are still discovering them now we're getting new fans.
I noticed last two of Australia we did a lot
about all the fronts rows of people who would have
been babies in the first album came out. So obviously

(02:50):
people are rediscovering things for themselves all these years later,
which is great.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
I mean across America you are getting Power Did on
the radio in the arenas, so you know, yeah, it
is these like I said, these are the songs like
Cold Hard Bitch and are You Going to Be My Girl?
My goodness, But I want to talk to you about
this new song because I love it. I listened to
it the other day we were talking about getting together

(03:18):
with you guys, and it's called Hurry Hurry. Now? Is
is this the only one new song that you've done
or are there going to be more?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Yeah, there was a B side of on that single
as well that we we It's actually a song that
because Nick lived in Italy for like a long time,
and you know, it speaks Italian, so we did we
did this famous Italian song and it became a hit
in Italy. Oh cover of an Italian in Italian hop
in Italian happing English and and actually became like it

(03:47):
actually went to number two on the chop in Italy
because I don't know why. I mean, it's a famous song,
but you know, and so we put it out and
it just that song like blew off in Italy. Yeah, Harry,
Harry's the only new one we've got out of the mine.
We are working on new stuff. I was in the
studio two days ago working on new stuff, so you know,

(04:07):
we've been working on new stuff for quite some time.
I guess it's a bit different these days. We've all
got different things going on, so we find time to
get together every now and then and work on new things.
But we're kind of getting a really good fifteen But
you know, s fifteen or so songs are really really
happy with them. Eventually, we'll get in and record them
and you know, hopefully a new album coming out too.

(04:32):
But yeah, Harry, Harry is you know, it's kind of
like it probably is a bit more how the rest
of the songs are sound, and it's kind of like
a rock and roll soul kind of song.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Yeah, that's what I thought. The same band, right, I
mean it's still the brothers yourself, Chris and Nick, right, Sester.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
And Chris isn't out with us at the moment. Yeah,
we've got a different drummer on the road with us
at the moment called Pete. Who is it absolute done? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (05:03):
But everyone else is saying, all right, okay, so Jet
back here in the Motor City. Hey, you know, you
know it was here yesterday, which I'm still recovering from.
Was your big brothers ac DC?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Oh brilliant? Yeah yeah. Where did they play?

Speaker 1 (05:20):
They played at Ford Field, sixty thousand people.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, yeah, than our show. Yeah. Yeah. You know your pistons,
Your pistons are actually doing pretty good this year, right.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Yeah, look at you, mister NBA. Yeah, the Pistons, they've
come from you know, worst to first. So yeah, they've
done well this year.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
So they they've gone from that's gone from the They've
gone from the the the doghouse to the big half.
Haven't I ever really lost on the bottom rine?

Speaker 1 (05:49):
And somehow all these number one draft picks have now
finally connected. But the best part Mark was, you know,
they brought in some some some veterans, you know, like
to buy Harris who was who was an original Piston
draft pick, Hardaway Junior, a Michigan man.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah, so in Beasley it's it's been a good run
and they're going to take I think the Knicks tonight.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
So yeah, well well well that'd be yeah, that'd be
that'd be this morning for tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Yeah, so you're an NBA fan.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
A few hours for us, right, Yeah. Look, we I
own a pub in Melbourne and we we play the
basketball because it's on. It starts at like midday in Australia,
so we the pub opens at midday, so we put
the basketball for TV and because there's nothing else on
in the middle of the day. And we get like,

(06:42):
we've got all these sort of people who these optionals
who work from home on and come in and watch
the basketball and work work from the pub and have
have beers in today. So I've kind of. I've got
a lot of friends who love it. But you know,
I'm into sport, and especially when it comes to you know,
playoffs time I'm getting into. I really like my baseball
as well. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
But well yeah, and let's not get started on already
Tree Tigers because they're doing great too this year.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah. Yeah, I'm a Mets guy with the baseball. Okay,
it's probably probably not going to go down too well. Yeah,
now I'll be watching that game today.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
So yeah, that's awesome. So you get the daytime version
of our nighttime TV there.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, yeah, so we Yeah, your basketball night games come
on at like midday here.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
So Mark, tell me a little bit about you know,
in between the breakups, what did you personally do. Were
you upset about it? Were you trying to get the
band back together the whole time? Did you move on
to a different band there in Australia, I mean, what
was the story.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Yeah, I've done a bunch of stuff. I've kind of
I'm one of those people who currently sit still, So
I've I you know, I did a lot of session
where like playing on other people's records. I did some tours,
you know, I played actually I played bass for Brian
Adams for a while, which was funny on on a
big tour down here in Australia, and you know, I

(08:12):
played based off of Peter Garrett from the band Midnight Oil.
Who's the big Australian band, I'm sure you know. But
then I did, I did a lot of writing and
touring with other bands, and I wat a part, you know,
just I'm a busy guy, like I like to I

(08:34):
like to remain very very busy with a lot of
different things. So it's just the way my brain works.
I can't sort of sitter out nothing. So but I'm
glad that band's back. We've all got other things going
on as well, which is cool. So it's like the
means that jet isn't your only focus, you know. We've
all got families now and kids and stuff, and that
makes I think it balances life a little bit better

(08:58):
when it's not just or you're thinking about is your band.
It's quite as big, you know. Now we're a bit
older and a bit wiser. It's actually quite nice to have,
you know, a bit of balance. But then it's great
to get out and go through it, go on the
road for three weeks with your mates, and play some
rock and roll shows. You know.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Yeah, well you've got you've got an extensive tour this
time around, so we're exciting.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, it's pretty it's pretty detail. We have a memory
of early days. We played in Destroit in hand Traffic.
That's that's that's an area of Deturer.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
Right, sure, yeah, probably small.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
It was Smalls, right, yeah, And it was a small venue.
And it was back in the day when we'd finished
making the first record, Get Born, and we were doing
that thing that every band does is were you're in
a fifteen seat of van with the trailer and you're
just literally driving around America playing shows to nobody because
you know, we hadn't really no one had heard of us.
We hadn't put anything out. There's a bit of a

(09:58):
you know, people knew us from some people knew it's
from like an EP we had. But I remember we
played Smalls in hand Traffic in the early days and
there was more people on stage than there was in
the audiences, like three people in the audience and four
of us on stage, and then two people went to

(10:20):
the toilet.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
No, I don't believe it that plays is always No.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
It wasn't. It was very early days, I like I
hadn't heard of us, so some you know, look, the
America can be funny back then anyways, like some towns
would know you and some towns wouldn't, you know, depending
on like a little like you know, college radio and
stuff like that. You know. Obviously it blew up not
long after, but we did. We did a couple of

(10:44):
loops of America just to playing to like not many
people at all, but yeah, that I still remember that,
and like we'd never been to Detroit. That was our
first that was our first case of Detroit. Yeah, I'm
really looking forward to getting back. You know, it's been
a long time since I've been there. I can't even
remember the last time we went through.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
So yeah, well, yeah, it's a great audience here in Detroit,
you know, especially for rock and with the amount of
airplayer getting it's gonna be like a whole new experience
all over again. For a lot of a lot of
people that are going jet it's like a new band.
It's like, no, they're not, they're like twenty five years old.
But you've you've gone from playing you know to two

(11:24):
people at smalls and then you're opening up for bands
like the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. Over there in Australia,
it is an entirely other world. I mean, first off,
you guys don't get here that often because of the
you know, the length of travel and everything else that

(11:44):
goes in with it. So many great bands in Australia
that we see that come through like once or twice
in a lifetime, you know.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
And the tough thing is in Australia is you're like,
you go out and tour and you have to basically
either stay out for months or because it's you know,
just keep flying home so far and so expensive to fly.
You know, it's not just the band. You've got you know,
five or six crew people as well. You're flying back

(12:14):
and forward all the time. People in the US and
Europe just can zip home pretty easily, like it's only
an eight hour flight. Where it's for us, it's you know,
it's seventeen hours to fly into into the US sixteen hours.
It's like a long flight, but we're kind of used
to it. Being Australian. You have to, yeah, I mean

(12:35):
it takes. It's like the country is the same physical
sizes as the US, you know, but we've only got
twenty two million people, twenty six million people. So it's
you know, we're used to the big long travel we
have to you know, like one one weekend we did
a bunch of shows and we flew the We did

(12:55):
two shows in Australia. We flew the equivalent of flying
from London to Cape Town to do two shows in Australia.
You know, we're used to the long hauls. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
So does it feel good to be back with the
band and everything and getting ready to hit the road. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Absolutely, And I think we're playing better than ever. It's
one of those things you just get better and better
at your instrument. Mixed voices still like like world class.
You know, even by racking voices better, it's richer, and
you know, like that guy's got one of the best
rock and roll voices of a generation in my opinion,
and it's still great. Never done a vocal warm up

(13:31):
in his life. It's a monster.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Well we are. We are definitely excited to have you
back in the Motor City. Congratulations on the new track,
and we're excited to hear some new material. You're going
to be doing anything new outside of hurry hurrying when
you're when you're here.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Yeah, you know what. We were discussing that the other
day we might break out two new ones that are
sort of unreleased just to you know, just to play them.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yeah, well, well that would be fantastic. I know the
crowd will love that. Mark Wilson, thank you so much
for the time. Go to the Jets website and check
out all the information, the merch and everything, and and
get your tickets in advance for the June sixth date
at the fillmore along with Band of Skulls, but one

(14:19):
of the best damn bands from the early two thousands
and still kick it in, rocking and on the rise again.
So congratulations man, and all right, well, thank you Mark,
thanks for joining us today here on Detroit's wheels, and
we'll see you here in the rock and motor City.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
All right, great, good, good Stokey
