Karin Freeland (00:00):
Welcome to Rock
Your Reinvention, where I help
high-achieving career women likeyou get unstuck, make your
corporate exit strategy, andsuccessfully transition to your
next chapter.
Hi, I'm your host, KarinFreeland, a certified life coach
and corporate exit strategist.
Whether you want to start abusiness, become a speaker, or
something else, I'm here to giveyou the tools and strategies to
(00:23):
shift your mindset, build yourconfidence, and take bold
actions so you can rock yourreinvention.
Ready?
Let's go.
Well, it's mid-June, whichmeans it's time for barbecues,
sunshine, swimming, and amid-year check-in.
That's right.
You set your goals for the yearin November because you're
(00:46):
proactive and you take yourgoals seriously.
You refined the plan inDecember, dotting all your I's,
crossing all your T's, andmaking sure you didn't miss
anything.
And then you hit the groundrunning in January.
Full steam ahead, no lookingback, right?
But if you're like most, therest of the year is a blur and
(01:08):
you close your eyes to blink andthe next time you open them,
it's gonna be November and timeto do it all again.
Except that you might find youdidn't quite hit all your goals.
So what if you weren't likemost?
What if you took a more activerole in your goals throughout
the year?
What if you added a mid-yearcheck-in?
(01:29):
Well, that's exactly what I'mgoing to walk you through today.
So this is definitely going tobe more of a workshop style
episode.
So preferably you're going tobe somewhere free of
distractions where you can writeand take notes.
But if not, you can always comeback and write things down
later.
The key is you have to actuallycome back and do the work
though.
Now, I like to take athree-step approach to my
(01:51):
mid-year check-ins.
First, we're going to reflect.
Then we're going to refocus.
And finally, we're going torefuel.
But before we dive in, youmight wanna take out your list
of goals and just have them infront of you as a reference.
Now, let's break down each oneof these steps so that you can
ensure you hit all of yourgoals.
(02:12):
The first thing we are going todo here is to reflect.
And the purpose of the reflectstep is to capture all of your
learnings and lessons from thefirst half of the year.
And this is important becausewhen we're moving a hundred
miles an hour, which we all are,we rarely stop to take those
in.
And we might be missing somekey insights that could help
(02:36):
inform a better path forward orget us back on track.
So the first thing you want tostart doing is to ask yourself,
what worked well in the firsthalf of the year and why did
that work so well?
So for example, from my ownlife, I might say niching down
in my podcast to really focus onleaving your six-figure
(03:00):
corporate job has worked well.
I've been starting to see moreclients from the podcast and
more people booking calls tolearn about coaching with me.
And it worked well because I'mable to speak to their direct
pain points versus trying toaddress everyone that wants to
make a career pivot.
And it's a space that I'mreally passionate about and I
(03:21):
love to talk about it.
The next thing you're going toask yourself is what are those
things in your career, in yourbusiness, in your personal life
that have gone really well andwhy?
And remember, don't just thinkabout this only from a work
perspective because you shouldhave personal goals too.
(03:41):
So one thing that worked reallywell for our family this year
is not having any travel sports.
I mean, financially, it washelpful, but more than that, our
schedules were a lot less crazyand we had more family time
together, which has been a hugeblessing.
So feel free to like pause thepodcast and just fill this out
as you go.
Next, you're going to askyourself, what didn't work as
(04:05):
you anticipated?
Now, this is not to beatyourself up or to open old
wounds, but to see if there's away to repurpose a project, find
a silver lining, or make asmall tweak that could yield a
new result.
So I'll be honest with you.
My Facebook group has beenpretty quiet lately.
(04:27):
I try to bring in new people, but a lot of times they don't
introduce themselves, so it'shard to engage or know what
their goals are.
and i had envisioned when istarted my facebook group this
really vibrant community wherepeople were always asking
questions and we werecelebrating each other's wins
people were posting things thatwere motivational and this does
(04:49):
happen sometimes but this yearhas been really quiet now notice
that I'm not gonna solve forthis yet, okay?
I'm just merely taking down thefacts.
So I'm not trying to fix thisperceived issue, but I'm just
noticing some of the things thatdidn't go the way I wanted,
okay?
So don't attempt to solve foranything just yet.
(05:12):
Then I love to take a moment tocapture and celebrate your
biggest wins.
Because as high achievingwomen, We often fail to
recognize our achievements.
Why?
Because we're so busy trying tohit the next milestone.
And we're just like, oh yeah, that's what I'm supposed to be
(05:32):
doing.
I'm supposed to be hittingthese goals.
But it's really important toshow you how far you have come
and all that you've accomplishedso far.
So please don't skip this step.
Make sure you write down all ofyour accomplishments.
For me, I was asked to keynotea charity luncheon in
Greenville, and it was a paidspeaking gig.
(05:53):
I also just did a LinkedInpresentation for a women's
energy network for theirCarolinas and Pittsburgh
chapters.
I completed my first class forSwitch, which is a volunteer
organization that I participatein.
And I could keep going, but youget the idea, right?
We want to capture as many ofthese as you can.
Now, if you've had aparticularly tough time
(06:16):
lately...
Perhaps you experienced adeath, a divorce, a layoff,
right?
Your wins might simply beshowing up every day or getting
into the therapy that you neededto get through it.
So don't think that every...
Win has to be some big, crazyaccomplishment like, oh, I got
(06:38):
promoted and earned $50,000 morea year, right?
Achievements really come in allshapes and sizes depending on
the season of our life, okay?
But they're still valid.
They are still wins andachievements.
Don't overlook them.
Okay, on the flip side, we'regonna take a look next at what
were your biggest roadblocks?
Is there anything you could doto alleviate that in the future?
(07:02):
Or how could you see this as awin instead of a roadblock?
Maybe you learned a new skillin the process or met a new
person that you wouldn't haveexperienced if things had been
different.
Anytime you can shift yourmindset around a roadblock,
that's another win.
Now, for me, one of thoseroadblocks was not having a
(07:23):
virtual assistant.
That has put a lot more on myplate this year.
But the flip side of that, what's been good is that this
year I've also been able to becloser than ever to my potential
clients and my content becauseI'm now creating it all.
It's also saved me money that Ican now reinvest in my business
or add to my salary, which ishelpful.
(07:43):
And if I want to, I could hiresomebody in the second half if I
felt like it was needed.
So there you have it, the firststep, reflecting on on the
first half of the year.
Now, I know I used a lot ofexamples from running a business
and owning a business, but thisapplies to women in corporate,
(08:04):
women in the nonprofit sector.
So don't feel like this onlyapplies to entrepreneurs because
it doesn't.
You can use this in any walk oflife.
Now, there may be questionsthat you wanna add to your
reflect section.
You might wanna look at, well, how close am I to my targets?
Is there anything I could havedone differently to hit them?
(08:24):
What did I personally enjoymost from the first half?
Is there anything my heartdoesn't feel aligned to?
Right, because sometimes we'rehitting all the targets, but we
lose passion for the thing thatwe're doing.
And that's okay too, becausethe sooner you notice it, the
sooner you can investigate whyand make the necessary pivots.
The power of a mid-year check-inreally helps you reset so you
(08:51):
can take the next step andrefocus your efforts for the
second half.
And now we're ready to do thatin step two.
So step two is refocus.
And this step is all aboutrealigning your actions to your
most important goals.
This is the step where you getthings back on track or you make
(09:12):
intentional pivots based on thelearnings from the first half.
Because I don't know about you,but sometimes I get squirrel
brain.
And sometimes I chase the shinynew object or the thing that
people are telling me is thenext best way to boost your
business.
And then I'm like, why am Idoing this?
Let me get back to what'sproven and what's worked for me.
Why am I deviating, right?
(09:34):
And sometimes I reel myselfback in.
So the first question you'regoing to ask yourself is, are my
goals still aligned with mylong-term vision?
Now this could be a simple yes.
And then you're just like, yeah, I'm totally on track.
Okay, next moving on.
Or you might find yourselfrealizing that you've gotten off
(09:54):
track.
Maybe you have new informationin your life.
Like all of a sudden you'redealing with a sick parent or a
child with special needs and youfind yourself shifting your
priorities.
You may find you have a newaspiration.
Like my husband and I justdecided to buy a rental property
to create another revenuestream.
(10:15):
And now I have a new goal forthis long-term vision and have
to fit that in with some of myother goals.
Now, just again, a note ofcaution on the whole squirrel
brain thing, right?
Just because you see someoneelse doing something, like maybe
there's another coach out therethat has an app, right?
Doesn't mean I need to go outand hire a developer and
(10:35):
suddenly create an app, right?
And so you have to ask yourselfif you've gotten sucked into
some of those shiny objects.
And if so, it might be time torefocus and go back to your
original goals and tactics.
The next question you're goingto ask yourself is based on your
learnings from first half, whatdo you want to try or do
(10:57):
differently in the second half?
So if we go back to my exampleof the slower Facebook group, I
started a summer reinventioninitiative with six experts in
six different fields to wherewe're going to be guest
contributors in my group andhelp the women in our community
reinvent faster and go furtherthis summer.
(11:18):
And I'm so excited about itbecause it's injecting a lot of
fresh energy into the group.
And if this is successful, thenI plan to run it again in the
fall with a new group of womenand fresh ideas.
So if you're not in theFacebook group, by the way, the
links in the show notes, makesure you join us for this
because we've got experts in thefinancial space, in LinkedIn
(11:40):
and resumes and job transitions.
We have another expert focusedon style and beauty.
So we've got all the things, right?
There's six of us.
So marriage mentor or homeorganizing.
So make sure you get in therebecause it's going to give you
all the tips and tricks that youneed.
The next question to askyourself then, after you've
(12:02):
brainstormed, right?
So take some time first tobrainstorm some ideas about what
you could try in yoursituation.
And then you want to askyourself, okay, what can I
automate, delegate, or do tosimply free up more time?
Now, this again is personallyand professionally.
(12:22):
So are there things that youcan outsource?
There is something to be saidfor paying for speed.
But of course, things don'talways have to cost you money
either.
It may be getting your spouseto step up or giving your kids
some more chores around thehouse.
One of the things that I'vesimplified is how often I post
on Instagram.
(12:42):
And I've actually shut down mylittle behind the scenes channel
because I just wasn't gettingthat much engagement.
And quite frankly, I didn'tenjoy having to go in there and
constantly try to think ofsomething to post.
I've been more focused onLinkedIn lately anyway, which
has made things a lot easier forme because that's where my
target clients are.
So one thing I may consider, isgetting a property manager if
(13:07):
it becomes too time consumingwith the rental.
So that's one of the thingsthat I'm going to have on my
list of what I might be able tooutsource.
And it doesn't mean that you'regonna execute every idea
either, right?
It just means that you're opento exploring all the options.
So don't be afraid to writedown things that you might not
(13:28):
do right now or that you thinkare crazy.
Like maybe if your business iskind of slow, one of your ideas
is to buy a business that'salready turning a profit.
Now you may not go out and dothat, but like, let's at least
be open to it.
Let's at least explore some ofthese ideas, right?
This is a good time toinvestigate also if you are
(13:49):
spending your time on busy workor doing things that are really
going to move the needle.
This applies to entrepreneursand those of you in corporate
jobs.
There's a lot of things we getcaught up doing because that's
the way it's always been done.
But sometimes we need to gethonest with ourselves about
whether this is working or not.
(14:11):
So the question is, to askyourself is if I focused on one
thing for this upcoming quarter, the next three months, what
would have the biggest impact?
And that's a powerful questionthat's gonna give you a very
clear picture of what you shouldbe doing and committing your
energy to.
Okay, one thing, biggestimpact.
(14:33):
What is it?
So congrats, you're two-thirdsof the way there.
One final step and yourmid-year check-in will be
complete, so don't quit now.
And the third step is what Icall refuel.
And refuel means to get clearon the support and the resources
you need to achieve your goalsin the next six months.
(14:57):
The first piece of this is yournetwork.
Because friends, nobody gets tothe top alone, okay?
Your next level likely dependson your network.
Strategic connections areeverything.
They can lead to partnerships, clients, new roles or
opportunities, increasedvisibility, speaking gigs,
(15:18):
right?
These are the people who canopen the door for you.
So what do you need to do tohelp you achieve your goals in
Q2?
Who do you need to be connectedwith?
Who can help you?
Who can support you?
Do you have the right people inyour network?
Or do you need to ask forintroductions to key people?
(15:38):
Do you need to expand yourcircle or just work your network
better?
I see so many people whoconnect, connect, connect on
LinkedIn.
They have these really big, beautiful networks, but they
don't talk to anyone in theircircle.
That is not going to help youright because then when you
actually need something or likeoh i haven't talked to this
(15:59):
person in two years i can't justreach out and ask them for
something yes you can but if youhad been nurturing that
relationship all along it wouldbe a no-brainer so make sure
you're working your network itis only as good as you engage
and collaborate with it so beintentional with the women and
the men in your community Thesecond piece of refueling is
(16:23):
looking at your skills and yourcapabilities.
Is there anything you need toenhance in order to get to the
next level or achieve yourgoals?
Is there training or furthereducation that you want to
complete?
It's really imperative that wecontinuously up our game to
compete at the highest level.
Now, this doesn't mean that youalways need to be earning more
(16:45):
certificates or degrees for thesake of earning them or because
you don't feel like you'recompetent yet.
You don't feel like you'reenough.
That's not what I'm talkingabout.
But it does mean that weobjectively look at the areas
that we want to developpersonally and professionally.
And this should be very closelyaligned to your goals.
I remember I had one client.
(17:07):
And she just loved learning.
She has a love for learning, but she was signing up for all
of these courses.
And then it was stressing herout that she wasn't completing
the courses.
And I was like, which of thesecourses do you actually need for
your job?
And it was like one of them.
And I was like, okay, how aboutwe just put those other courses
on the back burner and you justfocus on this one?
(17:27):
And it was like a light bulbmoment for her.
And she was like, yeah, okay, that would be so much more
manageable.
Okay, so we don't need to justbe earning certificates for the
sake of it.
Now that you've done all threesteps, yay, go you, it's time to
commit to action.
What's the first thing you'recommitting to for the second
(17:48):
half that is going to help youlevel up?
And who can be youraccountability partner?
Will you hire a coach like meor will you enlist a friend or a
spouse?
Having an accountabilitypartner is key to your success.
So do not try to go at italone.
And you'll have a lot more funif you bring someone along for
(18:09):
the journey.
Either way, I'll be cheeringyou on and look forward to you
rocking your reinvention in thesecond half.
Good luck.
Thanks for tuning in.
