Devonnie (00:02):

genres and tropes so you can besure you're getting exactly what
you want out of your next read.
Hi guys.
Dev here.
How are you?
Jordan (00:17):
Great.
Thanks.
reading?
Devonnie (00:22):
reading?
Oh my gosh.
This is such a hard question.
We're reading so much.
Okay.
First of all.
I am currently reading andlistening to Wild Card by Elsie
Silver is the last book in theRose Hill series.
I am devastated.
I am also reading and listeningto our Infinite Fates by Laura
Steven.
Oh my gosh.
When I tell you this book is sobeautiful, like I'm obsessed, I
(00:43):
can't wait to see where it goes.
I am still reading Revolve, which is an arc from Bal Cbra.
Um, it's the third in.
Off the ice series and I thoughtI was listening to one more, but
I feel like that's enough fornow because who do I think I am?
Jordan (01:02):
I don't know.
The audacity
Devonnie (01:04):
Yeah.
Oh, wait, wait, wait.
I actually did wanna mentionthat I just finished listening
to, in Reading King of Envy byAna Huang and Chef Kiss Chefs f.
If y'all wanna talk to me aboutthat book separately on the
side, please hit me up because Ihave so much to say.
That was my favorite book of theseries and I thought nothing
(01:24):
could top book one.
She lost me in the middle.
She lost me in the middle, butbook one and now this one.
Oh my God, I can't wait for thenext book.
I'm excited for the next one.
So yeah, that's, that's been myreading journey thus far.
Jordan (01:36):
Wow.
I am, that is so much.
I'm so
Devonnie (01:41):
yeah.
Jordan (01:41):
And hi everyone.
I am Jordan.
I am reading a Conduit of Lightby Chelsea on Tompkins
Devonnie (01:48):
Woo.
Jordan (01:48):
I'm, yeah,
Devonnie (01:50):
Chelsea.
Jordan (01:51):
I love her so much.
Um, and listening to twodifferent alcs right now.
The Seven Rings by Nora Roberts.
Yes.
I went back
Devonnie (02:00):
crazy.
That is so crazy.
Jordan (02:03):
It's the third book in
the series.
I listened to an A LC for theprevious one last year and I
just was like, you know what,I'm gonna apply for the next one
because is it the greatest thingever?
No, but it's really nice if youwant like atmospheric.
This time of year, like if youjust want hours and hours of
listening to like what they'remaking for food and where
(02:25):
they're going and this, it's apalette cleanser for sure.
Sorry, this is a whole nothertangent.
And I'm also listening toThreaded Lies by K.
Bromberg, a sequel to a book Ihave been waiting for for a
year.
So
Devonnie (02:37):
Yeah.
Wow.
Jordan (02:39):
everybody.
Devonnie (02:40):
right.
I love that you got the nextbook though.
'cause that is so frustratingwhen you have to wait for
series.
But I love that you got the nextA LC.
It's like instant gratificationkind of, you
Jordan (02:53):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
Um, both of those, I listen toALCS of, the previous books in
those series, so
Devonnie (02:58):
Yeah.
Jordan (02:59):
I'm feeling good about
that.
But why are we here today?
We're not here to talk about ourcurrent reads.
You would never know it, but.
Devonnie (03:06):
I know.
Unfortunately, we're not gonnaspend all day just talking about
every single thing we'rereading.
Today's episode is about darkacademia.
I know.
You're so excited.
Everybody clap at cheer becausewe love this.
And also, Jordan, you mentionedatmospheric and how, uh, the,
Nora Roberts book is atmo.
That is exactly how I think ofdark academia books.
(03:27):
Like they're very atmospheric.
The, because the people, thecharacters, the plot plays a
point, but the location is also,I feel like very integral.
To the dark academia vibe andI've got a record.
Yeah.
It's another character.
And if you don't have that, theycould, they might as well be a
Hogwarts, you know what I'msaying?
Like, well, actually Hogwartswas a little, you know, let me
(03:50):
not, let
Jordan (03:51):
canceled Hogwarts,
Devonnie (03:52):
Yeah, I know,
Jordan (03:53):
we've canceled them.
Devonnie (03:54):
But also, Hogwarts
itself was also pretty dark
academia, so it's actuallycorrect.
Um, but no, the, it, it can'tjust be that they're just at
college or they're just, youknow, the, the, the.
Academic institution that thecharacters are at has to lend
itself to that atmospheric vibe.
Um, and I have one rec that islike exactly that.
(04:17):
Like I feel like it nails darkacademia on the head, even
though it's not traditionallydark academia, but.
Jordan (04:23):
to hear about it.
Devonnie (04:25):
I know I, I'm sure
you've, you've heard you've
heard enough about this book.
I could not stop talking to you.
Um, before we go there though, Ithink, should we do some quotes
or fades?
Jordan (04:36):
absolutely.
I was able to find a really coolquote from one of my recs today,
and it's a longer quote that Ichose, but I think it also
really lends itself well to therelationship that plays out, in
this book.
So Enigma by RuNyx.
You seem to have a mistakenimpression that you have a say
(04:56):
in what I do with my life.
She began, let me make it veryclear.
You don't, if I wanna walk off acliff, I will.
If I want to take early morningwalks with a handsome stranger,
I will.
If I want to apply for an award, knowing it makes me bait, I
will.
You don't have a say in it.
Her chest was heaving by the endof the tirade.
The number of words coming fromher mouth surprising.
(05:18):
Even her.
He sat still watching her withicy eyes, burning the side of
his mouth, curled in that damnsmirk.
Try it.
Try walking off a cliff.
I will block you.
Try making yourself bait.
I will catch you and try beingwith another man and I will use
his blood and make you thecanvas.
Devonnie (05:41):
Okay.
That's not how I expected thatto go,
Jordan (05:44):
Oh,
Devonnie (05:44):
but um, absolutely.
Jordan (05:48):
I knew it was longer
than our usual quotes, but I
just felt like it reallyrepresents the book so well.
Devonnie (05:55):
Yeah, that's giving, I
need to see how chaotic this
relationship is.
It
Jordan (05:59):
I will use the blood to,
and you as the canvas.
Devonnie (06:03):
that's crazy.
He is not playing about her.
Whoever these, I didn't readthat book, but yeah.
Whoever these characters are, Ineed to know more.
Jordan (06:10):
I will tell you more in
a little bit.
Devonnie (06:11):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Uh, my quote is also from one ofmy recs, uh, my favorite, uh,
this also.
I feel like it doesn't giveanything away, but it shows the
relationship between the twocharacters as well as what's
going on in their environment.
Jordan (06:26):
Mm-hmm.
Devonnie (06:27):
Don't you see Sydnee?
He says his eyes wild, his voiceraw.
They're lying to you.
They're lying to all of us andwe all go along with it because
we want to be someone so badly.
That's how they get us our need, our want to be seen and heard,
but they don't care.
They don't see us like that.
They see us as something to beused and disregarded until
there's nothing left of us.
I will preface that this is not,I don't think this is the main
(06:50):
character, the male maincharacter who says this, it's
someone else, but it's still,
Jordan (06:56):
Yeah.
Devonnie (06:57):
it's an important
relationship.
Um, so Yeah, Yeah, it's veryintense.
Just like this entire book.
Jordan (07:03):
Hmm.
Devonnie (07:04):
And that quote is from
Grave Matter by Korina Halle,
which is one of my recs today.
Jordan (07:12):
Awesome.
Well, do you wanna just, do youwanna jump into it?
Devonnie (07:15):
Absolutely.
Okay.
Jordan (07:17):
the quote, like, to give
us more, I need to know
Devonnie (07:19):
Okay.
So Grave Matter by KarinaHalley, first of all, uh, thank
you so much Karina for the arcthat I received at Book Gowns
and Crowns because Delicious, Ilove it so much.
Okay.
Grave.
Grave Matter is a gothicpsychological thriller that
takes place at an institution.
It's called the MadronaFoundation, and it's located on
Vancouver Island, which alsoamazing because, you know, being
(07:42):
a pnw girly.
That whole vibe.
It's fall, it's foggy, it'smisty.
That was very prevalent in theentire story.
Uh, the main character is SydneyDeek, and she has been dreaming
about studying and working forthe Madrona Foundation forever.
She's currently getting ready tograduate or close to graduating,
(08:03):
university.
In her master's program, Ithink.
But this would be like a levelup in her education because she
is studying to be an aspiringmycologist, which is the study
of mushrooms and fungi and stufflike that.
Uh, so Sydney gets into theMajora Foundation and oh my God,
(08:24):
first of all, day one on theplane, things go awry.
The Madrona Foundation is notwhat it seems, right?
You meet all of thesecharacters.
Yeah.
It's not what it seems like.
You think these people aremaking promising steps in
finding cures for Alzheimer'sand cancers and all these
diseases, and when you get thereit is.
(08:45):
So scary at what cost?
Because there are ghosts roamingthe halls.
There are animals that aresupposed to be dead, but are
clearly alive.
There are so, and me telling youthat, guys, I'm not spoiling
anything because Karina, Halleherself has written this in the,
um, description of the book.
Like, so these are, these arethe types of things that are at
play at the Madrona Foundation, just right off the little inlet.
(09:08):
Yeah, like it is so good.
There is a romance there.
The romance.
Not made the focal point, but itis the entire, it is, it is the
book, even though you don't knowit until really the end, um, it,
it, carina's writing is just sogood.
Karina is just amazing.
It's very atmospheric.
You feel.
(09:28):
There were times when I wasreading this at night and the
hairs on my arms would stand upbecause I was so creeped out.
The things that are happening inthe book, you're just like.
This is unbelievable.
It is very good.
'cause they're studying at a,foundation.
It's pretty much just cabins andthey have boarding.
I am labeling it as darkacademia.
It's very dark.
Yeah.
(09:48):
And it's very academic, you knowwhat I'm saying?
I need everyone to read this.
I think it's a perfect read forthis time of year.
So give it a try.
If you haven't, I would alsorecommend listening to it
because the audio book isphenomenal.
It is creepy.
It is so good.
And you kind of find out moreabout Sydney as well as the
other people who are, uh,attending the foundation and the
people running it.
(10:11):
I will warn you, the plot twistsin this book will leave your jaw
on the floor.
Some of them you may be able tosee, but most of them you are so
confused.
You, you, it's, it's just socrazy.
So yeah, if you're looking forsomething exciting like that to
read Grave Matter by KarinaHalley, love it.
Love it so much.
Jordan (10:30):
Sounds so good, and I
love hearing the concise, what
it's about because I got so manyvoice notes from you during
about reactions without beingtoo specific and I, I need to go
read it now.
Devonnie (10:43):
Yes.
Jordan (10:45):
My first rec is gonna be
my most straightforward, dark
academia, a hundred percent darkacademia vibes from start to
finish.
Enigma by RuNyx is from myquote, was from this book.
So this is the ultimate darkacademia romance.
It's full of themes of death.
(11:05):
Secrets and loss all tied intoan undeniable attraction between
two very flawed characters andthe secrets, they will drive you
crazy in the best way.
And I think that also is arunning theme throughout dark
academia, right?
There has to be something touncover.
There has to be some air ofmystery, but like the secrets in
(11:28):
this are so layered andinteresting, Salem attends
Mortimer University to try todiscover the truth about her
sister's mysterious death.
So Salem is obsessed withforensics specifically, post
death.
She like bodies.
(11:50):
Um, she's very into the forensicsides of that and, tries to
follow her sister's steps.
Through this university, likewhat was her sister a part of?
She's gonna become a part ofthat.
She's gonna angry in herself inwhat her sister's life was while
trying to uncover this secret.
Right.
And it, it all surrounds thisvery secret society and she's
(12:13):
trying to figure out how tobecome their next interest
because she thinks that's whathappened to her sister, um, cz.
Is the ultimate, mysterious, dark and broody artist.
Okay.
I And he's
Devonnie (12:30):
Oh, your quote makes
sense.
Your quote makes sense.
Jordan (12:33):
Yes.
So I will use his blood and makeyou the canvas.
Yes.
And he, I think he does, if Iremember right, does work with
blood.
Any whom?
But he sees her and is like.
I'm obsessed because she looksjust like, she looks like she
should be in a dark academiabook.
Like, I mean, she is just youknow, and so he is obsessed with
(12:55):
her and he, but he has his ownsecrets and he has his own
mysteries that he's trying touncover, but they're working in
very opposing ways to try tofigure this out.
And so it's really interesting.
I'm trying to remember.
I think the first time they seeeach other is.
At the scene of a death, hefinds her standing over this
(13:17):
dead body, like on the beach andit's very ethereal.
And he's like, what are youdoing?
Just standing there drawingthis.
It's dark academia.
It is secret
Devonnie (13:32):
dead bodies.
Jordan (13:33):
And more people die.
It's good.
It's so good.
I liked it.
so RuNyx, I know people I feellike either love their stuff or
it's just not for them.
I did read what was the firstone?
Um.
I'm trying to rememberGothikana.
So Goana was one of the veryfirst dark romance or dark
(13:55):
academia that I ever read.
And I thought it was okay.
I thought it was interesting, but it wasn't my favorite.
I enjoyed Enigma way more than Ienjoyed that one.
Devonnie (14:06):
Is, is Enigma a follow
up to Ana?
Jordan (14:09):
no, it's its own.
It's its own.
So I'm just saying like, ifyou've tried RuNyx from Gotha.
This is different.
So yeah, give it a try.
Devonnie (14:20):
exciting.
Yeah.
Jordan (14:21):
And perfect for this
time of year.
Devonnie (14:23):
Right, exactly.
And that old dark academia book,I mean, also it depends on where
you live, right?
Because if you're in sunnyCalifornia, you might, you might
not be feeling the vibe, but forall the Pacific Northwest book
besties, perfect time of year toread this stuff.
This is so good.
Jordan (14:39):
Bellevue has a fog
warning right now.
Devonnie (14:42):
Does it?
Jordan (14:43):
All day.
A heavy fog warning.
Yeah, because
Devonnie (14:46):
Oh, I love
Jordan (14:47):
no visibility.
I know.
It's so fun.
Devonnie (14:50):
we're like giggling
and kicking our feet.
Jordan (14:53):
Fog.
Devonnie (14:54):
Fog.
Jordan (14:55):
Oh, and I did, sorry.
Really quick.
I did listen to this one and Ihighly recommend the audio
version if you're wonderingwhich one way to go.
They did a great job.
Devonnie (15:06):
Good.
Good, good.
All right.
My next rec I've already spokenabout on the podcast last
season, if you wanna check itout, but this is Blood Over
BrightHaven.
Um, by rf, no ML Wong.
Sorry, rf.
Guang did Babble Babel.
I,
Jordan (15:24):
Mm-hmm.
Devonnie (15:25):
um, ml, right?
Yeah.
ML Wong wrote this book, bloodOver BrightHaven.
And this, I feel like I willlive with the story and the
characters of this book forever.
Like I constantly think aboutthem.
So Blood Over BrightHaven is.
I wanna say dystopian, but it'snot because it's also, it also
feels like really far back intime.
(15:47):
Um, but it follows, Ana Sana isan orphan.
She has been an orphan since theage of four and her entire
mission, you know what, sorry,I'm gonna pause right here.
Because Ana is a, a woman tryingto get into a male dominated
field magic.
Okay.
And then Sydnee from GraveMatter, like there's a quote
where Sydnee says, ever since Iwas little, I've always wanted
(16:10):
to be a Madsen mad scientist.
Not just a scientist, but a madone.
These women are so similar andI'm just gagging that I put them
together.
Uh, because Cyana is very muchso giving mad scientists vibes,
but like mad magician, I don'tknow.
She wants to basically be takeninto or be the first woman ever
(16:31):
admitted into the highmagistrate, and it's a male
dominated field.
Only the men can, um, studymagic.
Women who study magic are typ, right?
Typically reduced to hysterics.
Like literally, there aredoctors who come in to try to
give the women, um, medicinesbecause they're hysterical.
When they have my I, it groundsmy gears, I promise the gears
(16:51):
have been grounded down to afine dust, but it is so good and
so integral to the story.
Cyana achieves her goal.
She achi, she achieves her goal.
She gets into the highmagistrate, but of course they
don't make it easy, right whenshe is supposed to get a lab
assistant, someone to workthrough spells with, because
everything they're doing is tokeep their city running
(17:11):
smoothly.
There's something called theBlythe, kind of like a plague
that is like.
I don't know if it zeroes in onmagic, but it is, it is sucking
the life out of their times.
But of course, the people in thehigh magistrate are very
secluded.
They have their little town andthey wanna keep that going.
So all the magic is used to keepthe Blythe away and also keep,
um, their city running smoothly.
(17:35):
Ion's supposed to get a labassistant who's qualified, who
can manage these tasks.
Instead, they find her ajanitor.
They give her the janitor, butwhat they don't know is that
that janitor is the last of hisclan.
He walked across the frozentundra where the blight
literally picks people off.
It just kills them, and the waythis thing strikes it is so
(17:56):
heartbreaking.
It unravel them and it is.
It unceremonious.
It just happens.
There is no warning.
It just appears outta thin airand just removes people from the
planet in the most horrific way.
And every year, or every fewhundred years or something,
these clans try to make theirway across the icy tundra to get
(18:18):
to the city to escape theblight.
And during that trek, many die.
It's kind of like a greatmigration.
Anyway, he ends up with Cy and.
I am trying not to give too muchaway.
He knows.
He knows more.
Jordan (18:33):
He has more
Devonnie (18:34):
Then he had, yes, and
he, he knows more about the
blight than everyone else.
He knows where it's, where it'scoming from.
He knows what's happening, orthey're like literally
unraveling it as they go.
Him and Ana make the best team, but it is also heartbreaking the
level of hiding and secrecy thathe has to do to make sure he and
his niece.
(18:54):
Who he's pretending as hisdaughter are safe.
Um, there is a, a small lovestory that really is not the
focal point in this story.
It comes at the very end.
And honestly, I don't know if Itrust Cyana with that love
because I feel like it took herentire life to see what was
right in front of her.
And then it was too late and heractions led to the destruction
(19:17):
of this entire thing.
Um.
I don't wanna give too muchaway, but I highly suggest I,
this is very dark academia.
Highly suggest reading orlistening to this.
Um, the voice actors are reallygreat in this as well, and the
story is just so rich.
But one thing I will say is thatyou will be triggered.
There are things in here thatyou can immediately relate to
(19:39):
present day, like women beingtold to calm down, not being,
not having access to things.
Immigrants moving into an areathat they're deemed, you know,
not that they're not
Jordan (19:50):
And then blamed for
Devonnie (19:51):
And then blamed Yes.
And then also treated so poorlyjust because they don't have the
same tools that you stole fromthem.
You know what I'm saying?
All of those things will raiseyour blood pressure.
But ML Wong did such a beautifuljob of like, oh, did I just like
lose ear?
(20:12):
I felt like the air was justsuch,
Jordan (20:18):
At first I was like,
that wasn't interesting.
Devonnie (20:26):
oh wait.
Sorry.
My stomach is cramping.
Jordan (20:29):
Something from this book
came and like stole the words
out of you, you're
Devonnie (20:35):
Or the universe was
like, stop talking about it.
Stop.
You done?
You cut me off.
Jordan (20:40):
And time Jordan has Rex
too.
Don't.
Devonnie (20:42):
Oh my God.
Yeah, I know.
Okay.
Well with that, I'm just gonnasay read, but over BrightHaven,
I think it's a wonderful book.
I gave it five stars.
Um, that's all I got.
Jordan (20:54):
That sounds really, it
sounds really interesting and
very different from,
Devonnie (20:58):
Yeah.
Yes.
The magic system is very, verydifferent.
Like I've never read somethingwith their magic system.
So that's always interestingwhen you find new ways to, um.
Read about magic.
Jordan (21:09):
Awesome.
Well, speaking of magic, um,mine too features magic.
I'm gonna go more intodefinitely 100% fantasy realm
with Avalon University Book OneBlood and Betrayals by Jeanette
Rose and Alexis Roone.
Okay, I think I've talked aboutthis on the pod before.
(21:30):
I don't know if I've featured itas a rec though.
Holy cow.
I'm still obsessed with this.
Writing up the description ofthis book last night.
I tossed all of my arcs out thewindow and I'm gonna reread this
book, which is a lot becauseit's 1,026 pages.
Devonnie (21:49):
I did not know that.
Jordan (21:51):
It's a big beefy gal.
I mean, she is,
Devonnie (21:57):
Wow.
Yeah.
That's thick.
Ooh, nice and floppy.
Jordan (21:59):
It is so floppy.
Devonnie (22:01):
Mm-hmm.
Let's spread it.
Yeah.
Jordan (22:03):
Well, a SMR forget.
Devonnie (22:05):
A brought to you by
Jordan.
Jordan (22:07):
the flop.
So this is perfect if you want.
Moody, dark academia, full ofmysterious backgrounds, sexy
characters.
When I say everyone's sexy,everyone is sexy.
A.
Badass and I would say veryunique.
FMC.
It's all set in a fantasyuniversity.
So Avalon University is wherebeings from all the realms send
(22:31):
their best and brightest toharness their magic.
Okay?
But this is after they'veharnessed their magic.
So they already have theirmatured.
Everyone is late twenties intotheir thirties.
Going to this university, right?
I mean, and especially when youhave beings that live so much
longer, it doesn't make sense tosend them when they're just
little baby 18 year olds.
(22:51):
So these are people that havediscovered their magic.
They have control over it, andnow they're gonna go, go to this
university to really utilize itand learn more and become the
best of the best
Devonnie (23:03):
Yes.
Jordan (23:04):
summer.
Right?
So RFMC summer ended up at theschool.
She doesn't know how.
Someone applied for her, whichis weird because she tries,
she's been living in the humanrealm just trying to fly under
the radar.
So she's not sure who appliedfor her, uh, red flag number
(23:24):
one.
But she wants, she needs thesecurity of the school.
'cause the school has wards, andit's supposed to be safe.
And so she is going there toutilize the safety and learn
more.
Um, but she's just hoping tokeep her head down, learn as
much as she can, and she didn'tcare to learn anything about her
(23:45):
past.
So she does have some questionsabout her lineage that she's
never known about, but shereally does not want to know.
She's faee, but she refuses tosocialize with any other faee.
Which is un, which is un fae ofher because faee are kind of
like pack oriented.
They, faee stay with faee,right.
She does not trust them.
(24:07):
She wants nothing to do withthem because her appearance is
slightly different than otherfaee.
And she smells a little bitdifferent because, you know, she
just, yeah.
So, but she just wants nothingto do with them.
She doesn't trust him.
Other creatures in thisuniversity include her bestie,
vampire,
Devonnie (24:28):
Love that.
Jordan (24:29):
golden boy.
Angels, a personal trainer ofhers who is a berserker
Devonnie (24:36):
A be.
Jordan (24:37):
Max is my favorite.
Um, a Brody maj of a headmaster.
There's shifters and onesadistic shadow stalker.
She doesn't know who it is.
He appears as a literal shadow.
Man, and he is stalking her.
Okay.
Devonnie (24:57):
a love interest?
Jordan (24:58):
I will not confirm or
deny who is.
I will tell you book one, not awhy choose.
Devonnie (25:06):
Interesting.
Jordan (25:07):
so cool.
Um, it's is right up there forme with Zodiac Academy and the
cliffhanger was.
Absolutely brutal.
I was just sobbing tearsstreaming, but I laughed my way
through most of this book.
Like, I mean, it is hilarious.
(25:27):
The banter is amazing.
Summer, and her best friendAlice are just like, they're
roommates and they are hilarioustogether.
Just, just, it's just amazing.
And she's a vampire.
And let me tell you, she's darkand depraved, and.
She is a vampire, like her dadis Dracula I believe, or some
big, he's like leader of thevampires, but he hates her and
(25:50):
so he treats her like shit.
And she's like, let me run mydad's black card and let's get
whatever.
It's just so much fun.
There's so much fun.
And there's different dynamics.
The angels, and then you go tothe angel realm.
God is a woman, I can tell youthat right now.
You learn God is a woman and doyou interact with her?
Maybe read and find out, andit's just everything is so good.
(26:13):
Okay.
And there's so much smut.
I would like so much smu.
It's so hot.
It's so freaking hot.
Uh, book two doesn't come outuntil March, 2026, but I don't
care.
I'm gonna read it again at leastone more time, and I really hope
you all do too, if you like.
(26:35):
Fantasy.
If you like, you know, thedifferent species and all of
that, please do it.
Um, there is, you get to knowthe angels really well and let
me just say her love interest, who she ends up being with, in
this book.
She's into more rough stuff thanhe is.
But she never says anything, buthe can just tell based on like
(26:57):
what she asks in there.
And so without talking to her,he goes and he reads more about
this.
He does research.
He asks her, do you prefer thisor that?
And he goes and does research sohe can be more of what she needs
in the bedroom it's
Devonnie (27:13):
over here trying to
look for it.
Jordan (27:15):
It's just so cool.
Yeah.
It's long buckle in, but it isso worth it and it's so funny
and heartbreaking
Devonnie (27:25):
I know I, you been
talking about it for a while and
I do want to listen to it, soI'm like over here on Libby
Jordan (27:30):
I don't.
Devonnie (27:31):
to see if they have
it.
Jordan (27:31):
I don't know if there's
an audio version yet.
I don't think they've
Devonnie (27:34):
Oh, it's not,
Jordan (27:36):
No.
So I, so I am on this is so, um,Jeanette and Alexis, they run
and own their CEOs of Rosen StarPublishing.
They just published their ownand until now have also
published.
Amber v Nicoles is their thirdauthor, and so they publish
their own books.
(27:56):
they've made it Rosen Star, andso I am on the street team for
Rosen Star Publishing, so I gotan arc of this, but I mean,
seven Stars loved it
Devonnie (28:11):
Seven stars.
I love that.
Uh, yeah.
I thought they had a, um, audiobook.
Okay, so
Jordan (28:18):
Mm.
Devonnie (28:20):
I'm gonna have to wait
because a thousand page book
right now, I,
Jordan (28:24):
Yeah, no, I mean, you
need time for that.
Although I read it for how longit is and how slow of a physical
reader I am.
I flew through it.
Devonnie (28:33):
Did you read the
physical copy or a Kindle?
Jordan (28:34):
Kindle, absolutely
Devonnie (28:36):
book books on Kindle.
are all three pages long whenyou're on the Kindle.
Jordan (28:40):
Yeah.
I was not lucky enough to bechosen for a physical arc.
All their physical arcs werespecial editions too.
They made them special edition.
It was so cool.
They're so there's the authorsare really cool too.
So
Devonnie (28:51):
Yeah.
Jordan (28:52):
any who, go read it.
And when you do, please messageme and tell me like reactions as
you read.
Tell me guesses.
Tell me theories because I stillhave so many theories I need to
talk to people about.
'cause there's still so much.
Anyways,
Devonnie (29:07):
I know.
I love that.
Um, uh, and now back to you.
Thanks.
We're over here at, Uh RomanceNo, I don't actually have
another, um, I know I don't haveanother, I just had two that I,
I know.
I don't know if that's a goodthing or a bad thing.
I'm pretty sure I've read moredark academia, but I can't think
of any other one that's.
Jordan (29:25):
you were willing to,
Devonnie (29:26):
me, you know?
yeah, yeah.
Jordan (29:28):
are your special
addition?
What are your special nods?
Do you have any, like, Hey,we've mentioned them before, but
go back and read these.
Devonnie (29:34):
Absolutely.
Now that you ask, um, the Covenand the Cursed by Harper
Ellwood, which I, we'vementioned on the pa, we love
that there's another book.
What is it?
Is it the Damned or Damned?
Either way, it's The Damned.
I think.
it is Bele Buzz is Beb.
Jordan (30:00):
Yep.
That one
Devonnie (30:01):
That one is his story.
Jordan (30:04):
that demons.
Devonnie (30:05):
Yeah, because, huh?
Why would that even be a name?
Like please just be so for real.
Jordan (30:10):
I think it is actually a
bi, I wanna say
Devonnie (30:13):
bi, Yes, it's
biblical, And that pisses me off
because, okay.
Anyway.
Be
Jordan (30:21):
B.
Devonnie (30:21):
bub.
Bumblebee is the damned, andthat's coming out either this
year or the beginning of nextyear.
I can't remember.
Jordan (30:29):
at the end of this.
Um, it's coming
Devonnie (30:32):
Yeah.
One of my favorites.
It is so good.
Um, the coven, it's amazing itread it and I love that we're
continuing the story withcharacters that we've already
met.
I don't know if the nextinstallment is gonna be dark
academia, but I'm still lookingforward to it.
It might, it might fit in withour spooky reads,
Jordan (30:49):
Yeah, I think it hap, it
occurs in hell.
I'm pretty sure.
I think they go to hell.
So I think that's where it is.
Devonnie (30:56):
I'm
Jordan (30:56):
there's a hell
University, I
Devonnie (30:58):
Right?
Hell, university is crazy.
Could you imagine?
I go to, I go to university inhell
Jordan (31:05):
If anyone has rec for
universities in hell, I will
take it.
But that's interesting that weactually, now that I mention
that, it's interesting becausemy next and my final rec, one of
the characters is from hell.
He's a demon prince.
Devonnie (31:18):
We love that.
Look at that.
Jordan (31:20):
Oh, love it.
Seamless.
So Storm bringer by HazelRockwood is my latest obsession.
You guys, you know how I canobsess over certain things?
This is it.
It is the hour for stormbringer.
Okay.
It's not even out yet, so suckon that.
(31:41):
You have that to look forwardto.
I believe it's October 3rd.
It comes out.
Hazel Rockwood is an indieauthor.
Um, she has a couple of otherbooks out.
She has a couple really shortnovellas, novel for Halloween,
and then she has a Christmasone, and then she has a throuple
(32:03):
book, one of a series that's notout.
Storm Bringer is a y.
Choose.
Okay, so
Devonnie (32:10):
I love that.
Jordan (32:11):
Alias whale spin.
Well.
Is just another storm spiritwith minor magic.
Too bad.
Her pretty face, unrelentingsarcasm and stubborn attitude
just won't let her blend intothe background because in
reality, wave is heir to one ofthe oldest and most powerful
(32:32):
storm bringer families.
But she's also half siren.
And in all the realms, sirenshave been hunted, used, and
killed for as long as historyhas been recorded.
She had to leave her mother inhiding to attend the university
in order to find answers.
(32:53):
She's sure is out there aboutthe mysterious death of her
father.
My favorite part of this book, besides the smut, had to have
been wave's, audacity.
Because this girl's audacity, like knows no bounce like, but I
was here for it.
(33:13):
Okay.
Like she was born to putpowerful men in their place, but
in order to survive, sheshouldn't be drawing attention
to herself.
So there are elementals of allkinds shifters.
Demons, angels, like anythingyou can imagine.
And they all come from theirhome worlds or realms, kind of
(33:34):
like in, blood and betrayalshonestly, in that way.
There's a frat house type group.
They all live in this housetogether, and they're called the
powerhouses.
I think the 12 powerhouses.
Um, there's 12 men.
They're all from differentrealms, and they are all either
like super powerful or heirs totheir respective kingdoms.
(33:59):
Okay, so.
Something I thought about thatwas really cool about this book
is that students were all ageslike, and I mean like from 20
year olds to a hundred.
So like, yeah.
So depending on their speciesbecause of how they age.
right.
Devonnie (34:16):
that makes sense.
Jordan (34:17):
which was really cool.
Devonnie (34:19):
Yeah.
Jordan (34:20):
this is more like a
place.
It's truly a place to go findknowledge and to hone your
craft, but it's not like all abunch of really young kids.
So some students are alsoinstructors and professors and
because they just keep gainingknowledge, they can go and like
(34:40):
hone their craft where it's notas strong.
But they're also teaching likeif they are the best of the best
at what they do and the type ofmagic, then they teach it.
It's kind of open forrelationships.
There's not as much because ofthat, because everything is more
open and flowing unless they arelike administration or unless
they're a tenured, professor,relationships don't matter.
(35:00):
Anyone can have relationships.
It's not a big deal.
Well, when everyone's differentages, I mean, it makes sense.
And so it's just, I know it'skind of cool.
This is a why choose, as I said, but I don't wanna say who she
ends up with.
Because she meets differentpeople, so many different
people, and there's so manydifferent friendships and kind
of like reluctant friendshipsand.
With different people anddifferent types of species.
(35:22):
And so I don't wanna give youtoo much about that.
And I highly suggest you don'tread the synopsis on Good Reads.
I'm gonna be completely honestbecause it, it tells you who the
interests are.
And I had so much fun having noidea.
So
Devonnie (35:36):
it like a faded mate
situation or does
Jordan (35:38):
well, not that
Devonnie (35:38):
just all
Jordan (35:39):
least right now.
So this is book one.
There will be more.
It did end with a cliffhanger.
The last line was like a punchto the heart.
I,, I still think about this, the last line of this book
before I go to bed every night,I'm like, oh, remember that was
so sad.
Um.
Like wave has a heavy historyand like I said, she cannot let
(36:03):
her true power, like her levelof power, both as a storm
bringer and as a siren out.
So sirens in this world, if theyuse their siren powers, it's
manipulation.
Like they say something in someway, it will take over their
brain.
So no one trusts them and theyget used and all this stuff, and
I, it's just, it's so good.
It's so good.
(36:24):
And like I said, Hazel Rockwoodis a newer indie author and I'm
just so excited to see herwriting Grow and see what she
does with this story.
And it's amazing actually.
Before I'm done with this, I doneed to read you a quote
because, just to give you anidea for the spice.
The spice, there's so manydifferent kinds also, but I
(36:47):
remember one of the thing that Ialways want to see is I wanna
see a more dom female maincharacter.
'cause we don't get that veryoften.
But because it's a why choose,we get to see her in different
positions of power withdifferent men.
But one of them, I messaged Debabout this the moment it
Devonnie (37:09):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Jordan (37:09):
Dev, need to hear this.
I was screaming for like threepages.
I would have to put it down andbe like, I, I like, I literally
screamed.
Okay.
Come here, pet.
The command rolled from her lipssoftly and straight to his cock.
That sped to full attention.
He started to rise to his feet, but Wayla shook her head.
(37:30):
Tutut Tut pet Crawl.
And like it went on from thatand his response was, yes,
mistress.
I mean, listen.
Devonnie (37:49):
Jordan's flab.
Were
Jordan (37:50):
good.
And after I reread Blood andBetrayals, I'm gonna read Storm
Bringer already, even though Ijust did because I need it
anyways.
That's my rant.
Go read Storm Bringer by HazelRockwood October 3rd.
You won't regret it.
Devonnie (38:04):
Yay.
Oh man, those some good racks.
I love that.
Storm bringer is not out yet, sopeople have something to look
forward to, you know, that'sexciting.
I just added it to my goodreads, so once it comes out,
hopefully I'll be able to readthat.
Jordan (38:19):
Yeah.
Oh, and I forgot, like, this isthe whole dark academia.
Like she works in a magicallibrary.
Um, so there's that whole vibe.
She has to wrangle unruly books
Devonnie (38:30):
Oh, that's my favorite
little micro
Jordan (38:32):
so cute.
It's so cute and hilarious.
And then like a guy walks up andshe accidentally like, drops it
and like the spell goes out.
And it's just, it allows forsuch good.
Banter and chaos.
Absolutely.
And it's so cool.
But she's also trying to notshow her full strength of power,
so she can't do what she knowsshe can do to wrangle them.
(38:52):
And she has to be like, shelooks at them and like, well, if
you're, she's like, you're sopowerful, aren't you gonna help?
And like,
Devonnie (38:58):
I love that.
Jordan (38:59):
I know.
It's so great.
Devonnie (39:02):
I love that.
Jordan (39:02):
