Ron presents Aesop's fable "The Dog and the Shadow," a timeless tale about a dog who loses his meat when he tries to grab what appears to be another piece of meat in his reflection.

• A dog carrying meat in his mouth wants to eat it in peace
• While crossing a plank over a brook, the dog sees his reflection in the water
• Believing he sees another dog with meat, he tries to grab that piece as well
• When he opens his mouth to snap at the reflection, his own meat falls into the water
• The moral: "Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow"

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hello, are you tired?
Hmm, are you tired.
Are you tired of Aesop's fablesalready?
No, you will be, because todayis the dog and the shadow and

(00:27):
the shadow.
This is the fable.
It happened that a dog had gota piece of meat and was carrying
it home in his mouth to eat itin peace.
That's all he wanted was to eatit in peace.

(00:48):
Now, on his way home, he had tocross a plank lying across a
running brook.
As he crossed, he looked downand saw his own shadow reflected
in the water beneath.
Thinking it was another dogwith another piece of meat, he

(01:11):
made up his mind to have thatalso.
So he made a snap at the shadowin the water, but as he opened
his mouth, the piece of meatfell out, dropped into the water

(01:34):
and was never seen more.
Beware lest you lose thesubstance by grasping at the
shadow.
