SPEAKER_06 (03:46):
Reason number five the nineteen eighty three
funding boat in the memorial andthe governance of Indiana here
on the two and a half milecourse of the Ohio River.

SPEAKER_08 (03:56):
I'm qualified Alabashan lines, second half
qualified as mud wise and thirdthis morning, and we're running
into the huge band flat, whichI'll explain in just a moment.
What is the order of theAlabazan Line boat?
What are we talking about?
Why about that work?
It was Fran Mudley standingbeside me here on the banks of
the Ohio River.
I noticed your boat was lookinga little light on the front end
this morning going down theshooting.

SPEAKER_03 (04:18):
Oh, of course it was working, but they've now made a
uh final change and they feelthat it's ready for the race,
but they've got it down andsettled down in the water.
In fact, uh he said that younever felt better about a race
day.

SPEAKER_08 (04:32):
Never.
Well, you came on ashore afterhaving your problems in uh Lake
of Hills Art and why havingsettled a lake to make a New
York race.

SPEAKER_03 (04:46):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_08 (04:47):
Okay, now when it comes down to the outlet like
you have been successful, butwhy was why after what is
everything like when you feelthat you had such a slow start?

SPEAKER_03 (04:57):
Well, we made a lot of changes in the boat over the
winter without having a chanceto help them in the water.
And you know what a differencethat made.
It was completely changed, everything we did lots of same
things.

(05:20):
Thank you.

SPEAKER_07 (05:25):
What about your level?

SPEAKER_08 (05:32):
Well what it's third, and seven twenty
qualifies for call together.
And Miss Yosley at 195.
What'll be Miss Woodwatzer?

(05:54):
Just get at 125.5.
American speed plenty of 110,executive job just under 100, as
was the RISP expressed.
We have 11 boats qualified.
We'll have further reports onthe station and then our
half-hour program from startinggun to checker flag.
From Madison, Indiana, this isJim Hendrick.
Madison, Indiana, as Fred Aldertold you, the weatherman is not

(06:16):
cooperated today.

SPEAKER_07 (06:17):
They've sent winds down this Ohio Valley, down
Madison, Indiana, on the banksof the Ohio River at a two and a
half mile oval, and just thewinds do shift and lay this
water down.
We will get underway.

SPEAKER_08 (06:27):
With the Atlas Van Lines, the Square Shop, Miss
Renault, Bob Taylor Special,Miss Pure Delight, Patas the
Ostee, the Miss Budweiser, RichPlan Food Service, Miss Madison,
American Speedy Printing,Executive Tone, and Wristly
Express.
Those are the 11 boats waitingto do combat here in the Indiana
Governor's Cup, the Dean Shennowwith Memorial Trophy race.
And of course, on the station, when it happens, you'll hear it.

(06:48):
From Madison, Indiana, this isJim Hendrick.
Wind shifts around from thesouth edge of the west, going
against the current here inMadison, Indiana.
On this two and a half mileoval, Fred Alter, the
commissioner for the Unlimited,is with us.
Fred, uh, it's this is uh unlikewhat we've had the last couple
of days here.

SPEAKER_04 (07:03):
No, rather nice qualifying days, uh, good high
speeds.
Uh, in fact, the weather wasvery nice this morning.

SPEAKER_08 (07:10):
Well, Fred, actually, when it comes right
down to it, the buoys are alllaying over on their sides.
This wind is kicking up rollers.
You've raced on this river as adriver and been here just about
since his inception for thisrace.

SPEAKER_04 (07:21):
Uh, what do you expect out of this river today?
Well, it's hard to say.
Uh, we've talked to the WeatherBureau, and uh, this isn't part
of a of a frontal system oranything that uh can change
drastically uh in the uh in theforeseeable uh few hours that we
have available to us.
However, we're sitting it out, hoping that a wind shift that
maybe might bring the windacross the river, uh something

(07:44):
like that will allow the rollersto go down enough that we can
get this the show on.
I'd say probably we're lookingat zero hour or about five p.m.

SPEAKER_07 (07:52):
And if not, we'd hope for better conditions
tomorrow.

SPEAKER_04 (07:55):
Well, tomorrow they're talking about a cold
front that's following this, souh we'd have our fingers crossed
there also, Jim.

SPEAKER_08 (08:01):
Okay, and then of course that all you radio
stations along our network line, this would delay our programs.
Well, everybody, it's been along day here in Madison,
Indiana.
The fifth rate for the 1983Sunday boat campaign.
It's our halfway mark of the1983 circuit.
We had a five-hour, ten-minutedelay as high winds came down
this valley, made it impossiblefor the boat.

(08:21):
We will run our half-hourprogram very, very shortly as
the sun slowly sinks in thewest, and I'll recap all the
heat action today after this forBudweiser.

(09:46):
82B produced a deck-to-deck duelbetween Earl Hall and the Square
Shop and Ron Snyder and the RichPlan.
But it was all for naught.
Even though it brought the fansto their feet.
It was the square shop.
Penalized an extra lap forjumping the clock of the start,
and the rich plan went on tovictory.
And the second to the Renaultwith Miller Irwin driving, the
square did manage to finishthird, while fourth place went

(10:06):
to Jurdelight Executive.
It finish overall fifth place.
And now we'll have our finalfield.
Set the stage for a half-hourprogram of championship running

SPEAKER_09 (11:01):
And now to the banks of the Ohio River in Madison,
Indiana, and Jim Hendrick.

SPEAKER_08 (11:06):
Well, thank you very much, Hank, and good evening if
you're on the East Coast, and alate good afternoon if you're on
the West Coast.
Five hours, ten-minute delaybecause of high winds down the
Ohio Valley here on the two anda half mile oval in Madison,
Indiana, the Ohio River.
We've had a lot of action oncewe got started.
It was one, two, three, four, bam.
We got our heats right off.

(11:27):
And of course, this is not onlythe Indiana Governor's Cup, this
is also the Dean Shadow MemorialTrophy race.
For a man, of course, that chosethe Miss Buddha riser to many
victories and became immortal inthe words and the world of boat
racing.
In just a moment, I'll be joinedby the Cole boys, Sam Cole and
Phil Cole, as we rejoin ourforces since the first time we
work together as a trio back inthe lake of the Ozarks, the

(11:49):
opening race back in the May,the third week of May.
We'll be checking, of course, with Sam and finding out what's
happening in Heats 1A, 1B, 2A,and 2B.
But first, this word.
Jim Hendrick, along with Sam andPhil Cole, back here at the Ohio
River, Madison, Indiana, racenumber five.
It's the Indiana Covetist Trumpand the Dean Center with
Memorial Trophy run.
Sam Cole, bring us up to date onthe first couple of elimination

(12:12):
heats.
Jim and Heat 1A are winners.
That was Van Lions and JimHannah at a speed of 107.168
miles an hour.
Second place went to Squire Shopand Earl Hall, while Jack
Schaefer Jr.
brought home Bob Taylor Specialout of Houston, Texas, in third
place.
In heat 1B, it was Jim Cropfeldand Bernie Whittle's Miss
Budweiser taking a wire-to-wirewin.

(12:33):
Ron Snyder and the Rich LandFood Service took second, and
the Rislies Express out ofEvansville, Indiana, took third.
In E2A, the winner was the MissBudweiser, driven by Jim
Cropfeld at an average speed of115.592 miles an hour.
Second place was that was VanLions and Hanauer.
In third, it was the TaylorSpecial driven by Jack Schaefer.

(12:53):
Eat 2B was won by the Rich PlanFood Service and Ron Snyder.
Second place went to the MissRenault and Milner Urban.
And in third place, it was theSquire Shop, driven by Earl
Hall.
That's how the preliminary heatswin here today, Jim.
Okay, thank you very much.
Our first boat is going on thecourse out of Houston, Texas,
the RB Fox Taylor Special, driven by Southern California's

(13:14):
Jack Schaefer and the Roar ofhis engines, followed out now by
the Squire Shop with the rookieEarl Hall, Squire Shop out of
Seattle.
Also the Amazon Lions fromSeattle, and that is Chip
Hanauer, last year's APBAnational champion, world
champion, and the Gold Cupchampion.
And the Miss Fudweiser driverJim Croftville just about to
fire up to Miss Budweiser.

(13:35):
We'll be back after this wordfrom our local sponsor.
Speaking of Phil Cole, Phil, let's get on the Pidaction now
and see what's happening as theboats take the course.
They have not gone out.
We are one minute into thefive-minute period.
Now Dave Culley steps off theBudweiser as a final word with

(13:57):
Jim Cropfeld, the driver of theMiss Budweiser.
And Jim Cropfeld is going to bejoining the other five boats on
the race course, or four boatsright now.
You notice the patch put on theAtlas Van Line sponsor on its
left sponsor does not work.
You'll notice a stream of watergoing straight up into the air
when the boat turns to the left.
That's from a hole that wasknocked into Sponson in one of

(14:18):
the first seats today.
We've had a very controversialday of racing.
Five-hour delay, and after thefirst couple of meetings, all
sorts of meetings and uh variousthings, the crowd actually began
to slap and applaud and uh booand uh do a lot of things that
I've never seen crowds do aroundthe hydroplane race before.
And finally the drivers agreedto go out and hold the race.
And now here at uh 7.35 inMadison, Indiana, we have

(14:41):
perfect water conditions andperfect weather conditions and a
beautiful, beautiful field offinal boat.
Thank you very much, Phil.
Sam Cole, looking down to theleft.
What are our boats doing downthere?
Jim on the race course rightnow, up in the upper turn.
Our field of finalists here areall on the course.
Jack Schaefer Jr.
and Bob Taylor Special takes thesuit through turn three and
four.
Heading up that way to MissRenault and Milner Irvin and Ron

(15:04):
Snyder in the Richland FoodService.
On the other end of the course,we have the Squire Shop out of
Seattle.
And this is Budweiser and JimCrockfeld, and right behind him
is Chip Hanauer in the Atlasband lines.
And I think we're getting backto that dog-on-dog battle we've
had all year long.
To be sure, we'll be back with astart.
So this is the final eat here inMadison, Indiana, after a

(15:24):
60-second timeout for this wordfrom your local sponsor.
The Indiana Governors Cup.
Let's go to field call quicklyas the one-minute gun is coming
up.
A lot of racing going on beforethis five-minute period.
A tremendous amount of racinggoing on.
Budweiser trying to cut off theAtlas band lines any place.

(15:46):
He goes now.
Ducked quickly into the infield.
The field's going to join up onthe back stretch, but
Budweiser's going to be on theoutside, not where he wants to
be.
As the one-minute gun is goingto come up in about five
seconds, Jim.
They're right across from us.
Atlas has the inside, Budweiserhas the outside.
The one-minute gun is fired anda clock kicks off.
As they go up, it's a Budweiser.
Squire shot.

(16:06):
Also the Rich Plan Food Service, followed by the Atlas Van Lions.
And what other boat up there isin that stray, Sam?
Jim Ron Schneider in the RichPlan Food Service told everyone
he got the inside away from theAtlas Van Lions and Hanauer.
As they head into that turn,it'll be Rich Plan in lane one.
Squire, Lane 2, Atlas Lane 3,Renault, Lane 4, Taylor, Lane 5,

(16:26):
and on the outside, it's goingto be Jim Crockfeld and the Miss
Budweiser.
30 seconds to go at the start ofthis race, rough by corner
number four, up past the bridge.
And coming out way wide rightnow is the Renault.
There was the boat that washidden I was looking for.
It'll be uh the let's check it.
Rich playing in lane one.
Taylor Special Lane two.

(16:47):
Budweiser.
Nope.
Oh, Alice Fair.
Alice Airlines, lane three.
Square lane four.
Budweiser's in four.
Squires in five.
Okay, thank you.
Okay, as they come up hereforward, it's gonna be Budweiser
getting very close.
And the car is right off it.
Budweiser, Adam Sandline.
Budweiser leaks the way upthere.
Budweiser, Atlas Fanlines, fireshop at R.

(17:08):
B.
Taylor.
Special out a few successes.
As we go down to the first turn, let's go to Phil Cole.
Miss Budweiser sticks her nosein there first.
She had a perfect start, andshe's washing down Atlas
Fanlines in that corner.
Jim Cropfeld's coming out of thenumber two turn in first place.
Right behind him is AtlasSandline and Jim Hanauer.
And up that backstretch they go.
There's less than two secondsseparated in, but we have slider

(17:29):
race on our hands, comingtowards the bridge and Sam Cole.
Jim Crockfeld, the dirty littleZip Budweiser.
Up that backstretch, about asecond and a half ahead of Jim
Hanauer, the Atlas Fan lines.
Crockfeld on the outside.
Hanauer on the inside.
They're diving into turn three.
Jim Hendrick.
All right, it's the Budweiserhanging down the hook between
the Apexes and Currenters threeand four.
And look at that booster tail.

(17:50):
Come off that skip in.
Oh, the Atlas Van Lines isalmost hooked in right there on
the Apex.
He's float way down.
Budweiser pick up about a secondand a half on that.
As they come down to completelaps.
Number one, it'll be Budweiser.
Bill Cole, as they come towardtoward you, get the time
difference, if you will.
It'll be Budweiser and Atlas VanLine.
Followed by the Taylor Special, followed by Square.
Then the rich flam.

(18:10):
Here comes the Budweiser.
Here comes the Atlas Van Line.
And the Atlas Van Line is 5.7seconds behind the Miss
Budweiser.
And Budweiser had a speed of128.5 miles on that first lap.
0.28.5, 5.8 seconds as they uhcame out of that uh of the first

(18:34):
lap.
Budweiser now has uh increasedthat lead to six seconds.
And Jim, I made the remark thatthe Sergeant Madison was in the
worst possible tactical spot.
He got washed down all over thatturn.
He's now in score twice.
For the Ohio River Bridge, andhere is Sam Cole.
And it's smooth failing for JimCropfeld and Miss Budweiser as
he goes underneath the OhioRiver Bridge and heads into turn
three.

unknown (18:54):
Chip Hanauer just in second.

SPEAKER_08 (18:56):
What a battle we've got shaping up for third and
fourth right now.
And Jack Schaefer Jr.
in the Bob Taylor special chaseby Earl Hall in the Squire Shop.
And here comes Ron Schider inthe rich land.
And Milner Urban in the midst ofRenova, heading down the main
stretch.
Jim Hendrick here and JimCropfeld and the Miss Budweiser.
Ah, the kid out of Cincinnatiwith the handlebar mustache.
Driving Bray Little SmithBudweiser shakes it loose,

(19:16):
coming under the bridge, comesdown to complete lap number two.
Over 128 miles.
First lap will get the speed ofthe second.
Here's the Budweiser.
Three more laps to go.
And the Chilco down toward thefirst turn will have a time
difference on him.
Here comes the Atlas Van Linewith Chip Hannover.
And as the Budweiser goes by us,he is 8.6 seconds ahead of the

(19:37):
Atlas band line.
Budweiser 8.6 seconds ahead ofAtlas Van Line.
And uh Atlas Van Line is another23 seconds ahead of uh Bob uh
Taylor's boat.
125.698.
That's number two for theBudweiser.
It's Budweiser, Atlas Van Line,Bob Taylor 270 Fire Shop, Rich
Land Bridge Services, Statison, and the Mr.
No.

(19:58):
123456 under the Ohio RiverBridge, and here's Sam Cole.
And as Jim Cropfeld goesunderneath the bridge of Bernie
Littlesmith's Budweiser, MilnerUrban, our sixth-place boat,
comes across down the frontstretch.
Cropfeld sets the Budweiser upthrough lane through turn three.
Heads for Lane.
Four heads it on down here forthe home stretch.
Jim Hendrick.
Okay, at the apex now coming offof quarter number four, shaking

(20:18):
it loose, puts the nitrousoxide, goes way wide.
Is the Budweiser with JimCropfelds, who is actually
racing in his home territory 50miles away, is his hometown of
Cincinnati, Ohio.
About a 125.6 on that last lap.
Here comes the Budweisercomplete lap number three, two
more laps to go.
Jim Cruppels, Burnie Little, isBudweiser, and as he goes slide

(20:40):
down the corner number one, justcoming under the bridge.
Atlas Van Lines is second place.
Down to you, Phil.
On the upper turn, Jim Crossfeldwas 12.5 seconds ahead of the
Atlas Van Lines.
Now he's only 11 seconds aheadas he has begun to save ground.
But Atlas Van Lines is going tobe pushing and shoving on him
and trying to make up as muchground as he can.
I'll get one more intervalbefore I send him back up to Sam

(21:01):
Cole.
Budweiser moving out of thenumber two corner now, up the
Kentucky side of this IndianaGovernor's Cup race course.
As Kick Hanauer, who was 11seconds behind the line, is now
11 set of seconds behind.
So it's seeing about that sameinterval, Jim.
Sam.
A lot of fat stands here asCrockfelds heads up the
backstretch.
Jets Ron Snyder in the RichlandFood Service, and Earl Hall went
into turn three on that lastlap, side by side.

(21:24):
Snyder spoke way, way down, buthe's got it started again, and
he's settling now in fifth placein the Richland Food Service.
But meanwhile, here comes JimCrockfelds out of turn four.
He's about eight or nine secondsahead of Chip Hanno on the Atlas
band lines.
Here comes Mr.
Crockfeld, Jim Hendrick.
It's Bernie Little, saysBudweiser watching Bernie
Little.
Hands in his pocket, spacing upthe foot down the duck.

(21:44):
His wife's trying to calm himdown.
He's not having any of it.
He's had his problems in thelast break.
Here's the green bike, and onemore left to go.
Budweiser.
Jim Crockbell.
Whoa! He almost lost it rightthere.
Way up in the air.
Look at Bernie Little.
He jumped up like he wassomebody shot him out of a
cannon.
He really got airborne.
Here comes the Alasan.
Second place.
He takes the great flag.

(22:05):
It'll be the R.B.
Taylor Special to the third.
Fourth place is the Flyershop.
Fifth is the Renault.
Sixth right now is the RichFlanders Madison, driven by Ron
Sterder.
We go right now to Phil Cole.
Cannot relax.
Han Hour will not let up.
He's still 11 seconds behindhim.
He's making him drive as fast ashe can.

(22:25):
119.205 on that last lap.
And it's still 11 secondsdifferent.
Almost 12 seconds now for theBudweiser over the Atlas Fan
lines.
Jack Schaefer doing a fine jobin Bob Taylor's boat.
Let's go up under the bridge toSam Cole.
And Jim Croffeld heads it intoturn number three.
This could be his third win asunlimited pilot aboard Bernie
Little Smith Budweiser.

(22:46):
He's at the Apex headed for turnfour.
And here he comes before about150,000 fans here in Madison,
Indiana, to win the Dean ShennowMemorial aboard Bernie
Littlesmith Budweiser.
And it couldn't be any morefitting because Dean Shenowith
is the most winningest driver inBudweiser history, and this is
in his memory of 5th IndianaCountry Cup.
Is the Dean Shenowith Memorial.
As Bernie Little holds his hand, starts the clap.

(23:07):
Here comes the Budweiser inclose ashore.
The checker flag is waiting, andthe Budweiser wins it! Hill.
And you might say the Budweiserwon that from wire to wire.
Jim Crossfelt went up theoutside of this race course, and
the outside, took a deep turn, and came down inside the entire
field, Jim.
There's the second place Atlasband line spot.

(23:29):
So Jim Crossfeld won that byhooking an upper turn and
getting inside of Atlas VanLine, all the while Chim Panauer
thought he had him on the hipand thought he had him on the
outside.
So Crossfeld suckered him at thestart.
Last lap, 113.924.
We must say something very niceabout the Bob Taylor showing in
third place, but the MissMadison was in the worst

(23:49):
strategic position that shecould feel at the start, and it
cost it.
The boat is on a lot of waterdown here in the first turn, and
that's what cost it all of itsracing room, and that's what
cost it his speed.
The average for the lap, 121.523for the Heat, and that's a new
Madison record.
That is to be sure.
Sam Cole, bring it in.
Post number four, five and six.
Earl Hall in Bob StylesSquireshop comes by, gives the

(24:12):
wave.
He's on the flag laptop.
Hall was a lap down.
I've got to figure that one out.
That should have been thecheckered flag for Earl Hall.
We're going to watch now.
They're going to give MilnerIrvin.
Let's see what flag he is.
And he gets the checkered flag.
So I wonder if Earl Hall jumpedthe gun or was penalized, Jim.
We're going to have to wait andsee.
But right now, the fourth placevote was Visa Renault and
getting the checkered flag isRon Snyder in fifth place.

(24:34):
They gave Earl Hall the greenflag, so he's obviously a lap
down right now.
He's in sixth.
Samuel, let's check with uhPhil.
Phil, did you see uh with yourglasses at the start maybe that
the square was is the one thatcut off uh the Richland?
Uh he could have been the boatwho did just that because the
Rich Flan did get very wet downthere in the number one corner.
So that's maybe why uh theypenalized him a lap, and I'll

(24:55):
find it out.
But Jim, the big news is thisbesides the victory, this
Budweiser broke Dean Genoa's1982 record for a two and a half
of 12.5 mile heat, 121.523 milesper hour.
The old record was 118.608.
So we set a new qualificationrecord at this race course this
week.
We've also set a new competitionrecord for a 12.5 mile heat.

(25:16):
And of course, depends all fastRapperwood would have to go on
the qualifying runs of the AtlasFamlines at 131.004.
But the record that Croftbellsbroke was belonged to Dean
Shedderwith.
This is the Shutterwith MemorialTrophy run, and I don't think if
Dean's watching, he could be anyhappier.
The foul occurred before thestart.
The foul occurred before thestart.
Earl Hall cut Ron Snyder off, moving into the starting area of

(25:36):
the upper end of the stretch, and that was the foul call and
an extra lap added through uhEarl Hall and the Squire Shop.
Okay, Sam Cole, you'll have tofigure out the final order
finish with this penalty, andwhile we're doing that, let's
take this timeout for a butt-bythere.
Now on the penalty left to thesquire shop.
Yes, it was on lap number four.
Uh, Jim uh Mike Newman wastelling me it was on lap number
four in the upper turn.
Uh Earl Hall washed down uh RonSnyder and cost him a position.

(26:01):
Therefore, they added an extralap to Earl Hall, moved him all
the way back to sixth place, andmoved the uh uh Riftland Food
Service back up to fifth place.
And Ronald Fourth, Bob Taylor'svote in its debut here, third
place in a fine showing, AtlasBan Line second, and Bernie
Little becomes the 44 becomeswinner number 44, his 44th win,
and this is five times he's wonthe Indiana Governor's Cup.

(26:24):
By the way, Jim, very quickly, let me throw this in.
Twenty-three years ago, or 20years ago now, the Anheuser
Busch Company risked$5,000sponsoring Bernie Little's Miss
Budweiser for the first time.
Anheuser Bush's entire programof sports participation and
support has grown out of thatoriginal$5,000 sponsorship to
Bernie Little, and everythingthey do now took root from

(26:46):
Bernie Little's first$5,000sponsorship 20 years ago.
Okay, thank you very much.
We'll have another few wordsaway for the driver and the
owner who was standing on thedock, congratulating each other.
We're trying to get them uphere.
But let's take timeout for thisword from your local sponsor.
Jim Hendrick along with PhilCole, Sam Cole, here on the
banks of the Ohio River,Patterson, Indiana, the fifth

(27:08):
race of the 1983 Thunder Boatcampaign of South History, and
we have reached the halfwaymark, Sam Cole, of this Tim Race
schedule.
Yes, we have, Jim.
It's uh been an exciting year.
I'm looking forward to the GoldCup next weekend down in
Evansville, Indiana.
You know, last year Chip Hanauerand the Atlas people here had a
frustrating year weekend herebecause the boat didn't start
for the final heap, but theycame out here and they won the
race this time around.

(27:30):
Okay, the winning driver ismaking his way over toward us.
That will be Jim Cropfeld, who'shad a busy day.
As we told you, we had five hourand ten minutes delay before any
of the action started.
And the water was rough attimes, and now as he puts his
headset on, let's call in thedriver.
Hello, Jim Cropfeld.
Hello, Jim.
How are you?
Pretty good.
Don't strangle him.
Let him have the box that goeswith the rest of it.

(27:51):
That's good.
He can walk over and talk to me.
There we go.
Jim, congratulations.
Now, it looks like uh, you know, you set a record if you don't
know that.
Is that right?
Your pastor's lap was 128.2,that was lap number one.
Then he went to 125.6, 122.1,119.2, 113.9.
And your overall average is arecord for this course, 121.523.

(28:13):
The old record was a little over118 set by the man who you, of
course, succeeded.
And this, of course, is hisrace, Dean Shadow.

SPEAKER_05 (28:20):
That's one of the greatest honors I've ever had.
I I was really, I really feltbad, Jim.
This morning I didn't know therewas going to be a service for
Dean, and I was up having mylunch, and I came back and I was
just finishing up, and I Ireally felt like crying.
I felt so bad, and I still doright now, but uh well it's an
honor to win the race.

SPEAKER_08 (28:35):
You this race you won with a record speed.
Uh Bernie, this was a record.
His first was 128.2, his overallwas 121.5.
That elapsed Dean Shenowith'srecord of several years ago at
118 plus, and being a DeanShenowith Memorial Trophy race,
he said he's honored, and Idon't blame him.

SPEAKER_07 (28:50):
Yeah, I don't either, Jim.
First thing I said to him, butDean is awful happy about that,
I'll guarantee you.
And uh all the buttwise are trueand everything.
Uh, we're really very pleased towin this in Dean's honor.
And uh uh Chip Hanauer came overand congratulated him and all
the Atlas crew, and they feltgood about it too.
They put on one whale of a race.
We're awful sorry the spectatorshad to wait so long to see it.

SPEAKER_08 (29:11):
Well, when they did, they saw a tremendous race.
Jim Croft fell such speed withthe water hot was it had to be a
lot better.

SPEAKER_05 (29:16):
The water was absolutely fantastic.
It's the most perfect water I'veever seen on Madison.
Yeah, the last heat.
Right, the last heat.
During the day it was very, veryrough, but I could uh I opened
it up on the start, and uh Ididn't have any problems.
I don't know what my top speedwas.
It wasn't that much because theyhad a little small wheel on.
Well, the average 128.
That's the average.
That's your fastest.
That's the fastest.
That's uh three-mount hourfaster than my qualified.

(29:39):
I told Mr.
Little, I'm gonna go faster inthe heat.
Save it all for that.
That's what we're doing.

SPEAKER_08 (29:44):
Uh Jim, you suckered the chip pan hour at the start.
You went up the outside, andthen you dove down into that
number three hole just about ascleverly as I've seen anybody do
in a long time.
How'd you do that?

SPEAKER_05 (29:55):
Well, I planned it that way.
I did it in the first heat and Ithought, well, it worked all
right, I'll try it again.
But uh, chip went up on thebullet.
Line.
Uh, I think he had somebody'sinside, I'm not sure, but he was
on the blue line.
He was putting along, and I knewwell, he was going to hold that
blue line.
I couldn't get on his inside, soI shot up around with the squire
and uh just got going.

SPEAKER_08 (30:10):
Also, you set a new record for our heat in this last
heat here of over 121 miles anhour.
A new heat record for this race.

SPEAKER_05 (30:17):
Well, I think the last four times we run the boat,
we've broke some sort of record,so I think that's pretty good.

SPEAKER_08 (30:21):
Hang on, guys.
We'll be back in 60 secondsafter this word from our local
sponsor.
This is Jim Hendrick, along withBernie Little, and also with Jim
Crossell.
And we'll be talking togentlemen after this.
Um, makers of a book.
We only have about 30 secondsleft, Bernie Little.
You've got this one in the bag.
There's three out of five wins.

SPEAKER_07 (30:41):

SPEAKER_08 (30:56):

course.
Your fastest average for theoverall heat, 121.523.
And uh, what can you do to stopthat in the gold cups?

The race was delayed by morethan four hours because of
choppy waters, a condition thatled many drivers to complain and
threaten not to run at all.
Once the race was ran, however,Cropfeld and Miss Budweiser
proved once again that practiceis fine, but boy, winning is

(32:53):

Governor's Cup in Madison, JimCropfeld set a one-lapse speed
record of 128 miles per hour inthe race, leaving Chip Han Hour
