Spray hangs in the air, engines hammer the river, and a championship teeters on a half‑boat‑length margin. We crack open a restored broadcast from the 1964 APBA Gold Cup in Detroit and ride every surge, swerve, and split‑second decision that made this one of the most dramatic finishes in unlimited hydroplane history. This is all in thanks to Bob Van Den Akker who donated audio footage to the podcast!

Unfortunately, the first set of heats were not recorded, so we drop into Heat 2A with Chuck Thompson’s Tahoe Miss carving through rough water while Notre Dame’s Bill Muncey chases in hot pursuit!

(01:35):
And this is largely this isentirely thanks to Bob
Venenacher.
Bob Ehrenacker is a lifetimesupporter and fan of unlimited
hydrogen racing.
I've known him for the past 25years, racing RC electric boats
with him.
A great person.
Fun to be around, a hugesupporter of the support.
And I want to say thank you toBob for making this happen.

(01:59):
Um different collections.
I hate over here, I've gotten myhands on those.
I'm I'll have a few funsurprises next year with this.
Um this actually will be thelast episode for the season of
season after today because uh uhlife is just gonna be getting
busier and busier with work andschool and everything else in

(02:20):
between.
So I hope you can enjoy an extralong episode as we travel back
to 1964.
Unbelievable.

(03:47):
At this race, and I think we'regonna have a lot of fun going
back and listening to this race.
There's some fun interviewsalong the way, it's fun to hear
the commentator uh thecommentators talk about the
sport and the racing going on.
Unfortunately, we don't have thefirst fight of heat, but we're
gonna enter halfway through intoQA as Chuck Thompson has a
sizable lead.

(04:07):
And uh Bill Muncie might be in alittle bit of trouble.
Hope you're comfortable becausewe got a long episode today.
We're gonna travel back to 1964for the APBA Gold Cup.

SPEAKER_02 (04:21):
Chuck Thompson is just marking like amazing
through these first.
And believe me, the river isrough.
He's leading Notre Dame by sixseconds.
And Bill Mumpsy seems to haveclosed the gap somewhat as he's
on the back stretch of lapnumber two, or rather lap three
of each two.
Chuck Thompson in the lead.
Mumpsey said he'd push him hardenough if he got behind.
He wants to force these boysinto an engine change before

(04:42):
this day is over.
Turn one miss now is enteringthe upper corner on lap number
three.
He leads Notre Dame by sixseconds, and the distance is
about 150 yards as they moveinto the turn as Bill Munsey
closes its way down.
A half a lap behind.
We have a terrific duel betweenGale 5 and X side.
Gale five with Rex Manchesterholding off the X side.
It'll be a rough break if BillGarrell finishes fourth in fifth

(05:05):
place, way behind at the US.
Munchie slipped, uh Munsey hit abully.
Uh miss went over.

SPEAKER_03 (05:15):
Munsey hit a bully with motor game.
He spun sideways and ran over abully.
Munchie uh he has droppedcarriage.

SPEAKER_02 (05:22):
Uh uh indicating something took off hands off to
Leo.
Uh, I don't exactly know whathappened out there, but just
Munsey ran over pulley number 19in the upper turn.
This could be adisqualification, uh, depending
on the judge's interpretation ofthe hole.
And uh Munsey uh lost a lot ofground.

(05:45):
Aye oh my a turn of events now, terrific lead for Terho Myth.
Chuck Thompson continues to movenow.
He's got a big, big margin.
And remember, it was in thesecond heat last year.
It was in the second heat lastyear when Bill Muncie was closed
down when he had that string ofbad luck, and then in the first
play, he never was able to getback in contention.

(06:07):
And here he has run over a boy,boy number 19.
He ran over it on the third lapof E2A, and now Carl Miss has a
tremendous lead of about 20seconds out on the back stretch.
Chuck Thompson leads by about400 yards, and his time for that
last lap was 107.
107.

(06:32):
This is a rather strange E2A.
Chuck Thompson uh seems ratherjust uh unaffected by the whole
thing.
Uh he is pulling off the upperturn, he's driving it as if the
boy was still there.
Uh, he's right in a grove, he'soff the corner coming down to
finish his fourth lap with atremendous lead over.
Notre Dame was running underreduced power now, and Gale 5

(06:53):
and Ikside are coming uprapidly.
And this time Ross into thirdplace, Xide is in third.

unknown (07:00):
Bill Paul is charged past to Gale 5, and Notre Dame
is under reduced power.

SPEAKER_02 (07:04):
109 on that lap for Townhoe miss in the lead going
into the last lap.
Town misses in the middle of thestretch.
In second place is Notre Damehaving trouble.
In third place is uh Gale and Xside dueling their float for
both.
Here we have a terrific battlecoming up.
Notre Dame is just back forfarming, and Bill Musty is in
trouble.
Here's X side in third place.

(07:28):
A terrific goal! Exit and Galeare moving up on Notre Dame now.
Judge Thompson is in the lead,he's got a terrific margin.
Exit is charging into secondplace with Gale 5, and Notre
Dame is um has split back now.
It looks like to fourth place.
This is a tremendous turn ofevents and heat uh 2K.

(07:48):
We didn't think that Munciewould encounter any problems,
but he bounced wildly and ranover a bully in the upper turn.
And since then, the Notre Damehas just not been performing.
X side has now moved intosecond.
Gale 5 has now moved into third.
Notre Dame is fourth, and turnwill miss his home 30 in the
lead here.

unknown (08:05):
Two thirds of the way down the back shooter, lap
number five.
He's leading by over 30 secondsnow.
His time was 108.5 on the lastlap.

SPEAKER_02 (08:13):
Chuck Thompson is targetedly charging.
He's now coming into the upperturn.
A full straightaway ahead ofMiss Xide, and somewhere Bill
Burrow got up uh some power.
He has really come on this lastlap with X side.
U.S.
5 is coming by in last place, running very, very rough.

(08:33):
And now here comes Harris Tahoemiss down to get the checkered
flag.
Chuck Thompson coming in for thecheckered flag and the winner in
Heat 2A.
It's the second victory in arow.
Tahoe miss.
Tahoe miss.
The winner of heat 2A.
Exide second.
Gale 5 is third.
Notre Dame is fourth.
And Charlie Mendelson,McDonald's, Notre Dame is under

(08:56):
reduced power.
And this will partial forceMunzie and make an engine change
if he has any mechanicalproblems.
Here's Miss Xide now, driven byBill Brown.
Eight minutes 26 seconds was thetime for Chuck Thompson.
Murray, Murray, that was a wildand woolly heat.

(09:17):
Here's Gale 5 driven by RexManchester coming over.
106.
106.719.
And in rough water, that ispretty good driving by Chuck
Thompson.
Notre Dame now coming over forit.
Bill Muncie disgusted waiting.
And uh after charging verynicely through the first lap,

(09:42):
Notre Dame fell into secondplace when Tahoe took him.
And then when Muncie ran overthe boy, he just uh didn't seem
to have it for the rest of theuh heat.
Miss U.S.
is still out on the course, uhrunning under very, very reduced
speed.

unknown (09:59):
Darren Wilson is not at all in contention today for some
reason.
We expected U.S.

SPEAKER_02 (10:04):
to be a pretty solid contender, but he just hasn't
materialized.
The winner of Heat 2A, HarrisCarol Miss by 21 seconds over
Miss Xide, who made a greatcharge on those last two laps
with Bill Burrow driving.
We'll have some unofficialaverages on this uh heat 2A in
just a moment.
This Gold Cup coverage is beingbrought to you over radio.

(10:26):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, we're now trying to checkover the uh times for the boats
in Heat 2A, which was kind of awild heat.
Certainly the best battlingwe've had thus far today on the
Gold Cup course.
And the winner, Chuck Thompson, came from a very bad start.
One of the uh it looked to me tobe one of the uh uh one of the

(10:48):
worst uh starts that Chuck hasmade in quite a while.
He was throttled way down asthey came over the line, and
Notre Dame, uh Gale 5, and uhMiss Xide all came in ahead of
him.
But as they went into the firstturn, uh terrific burst of boat
speed, pushed Tahoe Miss intosecond behind Notre Dame and
came off the corner, uh, andNotre Dame was still in the lead

(11:09):
with Bill Muncie driving.
Tahoe Miss charging right upbehind him.
He took him uh midway in thesecond lap, and then uh on lap
three, the Notre Dame, driven byBill Muncie, running in second
place, was attempting to move upon Tahoe Miss when he ran over
boy number 19, or uh uh lookslike boy number 18 now, which

(11:30):
would be the last marker boy inthe upper turn.
Uh the Notre Dame slid sideways,uh, looked like Bill lost
control of the boat for just amoment, and they drove right
over the boy, and after that, slowed down considerably.
This X-side and Gale 5 werebattling for third and fourth
position, then moved up, andwith a tremendous burst of
speed, Bill Burrow came intosecond place with Gale third.

(11:52):
They finished with Poor HoleMiss first, X side second, Notre
Dame uh Gale 5 was third, NotreDame was fourth, and then Miss
US5 trailed the field by a verywide margin.
Speeds were considerably fasterin this heat than we have seen
thus far, and unofficially wehave two hole miss turning one
lap in the neighborhood of 112miles an hour.

(12:14):
Here are the unofficial averagesfor the first four boats.
Terrible Miss was first, 06.719.

unknown (12:22):
Second place was Miss Xide, 02.466, Xide trail by 21
seconds.
Third place, Gale 5, 99.815,Gale 5 trailed by 35 seconds.

SPEAKER_02 (12:35):
Fourth place, Notre Dame, 97.297, and uh we will of
course uh check with the judgesto see if there is a
disqualification coming on NotreDame for running over that boy.
And then in fifth place, MissU.S.
5, driven by Don Wilson, trailedalmost a minute and a half time
the leader, fur out ofcontention, and uh a rather

(12:56):
disappointing performance forthe U.S.
U.S., as I said, burnt very, very badly on the first lap of
the heat.
Uh, we could see a terrificcloud of spray shoot out from
the side of the rooster tail, indicating that the U.S.
had taken a very violent leap inthe middle of the first stretch.
And apparently uh something wentuh wrong mechanically with the

(13:19):
U.S.
Uh she slowed down, and then DonWilson got her going again.
But uh by the time he was uhunder full head of steam again,
he was well behind the leadersand coasting along.
Uh and at the end it looked asthough he was not only having
mechanical problems, but he wasuh looking into the cockpit as
if something was uh blown downeither in the engine well or at

(13:43):
the rear of the boat, one or theother.
Uh he was not getting a goodride, certainly.
His second heat victory in arow, and incidentally, up until
today, he had only won two heatsin Bowl Cup competition in eight
previous Gold Cup races.
So he's already uh equaled hisprevious record and has got four

(14:05):
more as the afternoon continues.
Here is Carhole Miss First, Heat2A, second Miss X from Seattle,
third, Gale 5, fourth, NotreDame, fifth, Miss US 5.
That's it for Eat 2A.
We'll have 2B in just about 20minutes.

(14:27):
Uh, we have an official summaryof E2A.
The winner, Tahoe Miss, secondwas Miss X, third was Gale 5,
Miss US 5 was 4th, and NotreDame was 5th.
Uh Bill Hunty was required to goan extra lap for running over

(14:47):
the 18th marker boy on thecourse.
He had to go an extra lap andtherefore finished fifth.
So the points on those fivevotes, Tahoe Miss now has 800,
sitting very well at the end oftwo heats.
Uh Miss Xide has 600 points.
Notre Dame has 527, Miss U.S.
338, and Gale 5, who failed tostart the first heat, has 225

(15:12):
points.
The votes are out in the coursenow for 2B.
Here's uh Madison and Smirnoffcoming by.
Bardall is on the back stretch.
Dollar Bill is down at the lowerend of the course.
And uh Eagle Electric has alsocome out.
Bluechip has been scratched fromE2B.
Uh we don't exactly know thereason.

(15:32):
Uh blue chip was not runningwell at the end of the first
heat, which was stopped when BobSchroeder was thrown out of his
boat.
And then uh it seemed that someuh material was flying off the
hull, and perhaps blue chip hassuffered hull damage uh too
extensive to repair in time.
We don't know, we'll try andfind out for you later on.
Uh, in just a few moments, we'llhave the start of heat two bee.

(15:55):
This gold cup is starting toshape up into a terrific battle.
This is Bill Jurzick in Detroiton Radio King.
The Gold Cup coverage todaybeing brought to you by Security
Civisco.

SPEAKER_04 (16:05):
Today is the First Day of July.
Security Civesco.

SPEAKER_02 (17:15):
As Eagle Electric goes by, we are ready now for
the running of heat two B of theGold Cup race.
The second heat in thisfour-heat race is probably one
of the most important because itpositions the boats on point and
lets them know exactly whatthey're going to have to do as
the race progresses.
And certainly anybody in anydifficulty at the end of each

(17:36):
two will have to make an enginechange and will have to go all
out the rest of the afternoon.
Miss Bardall, the second placefinisher in the first heat, has
drawn some of the boats that uhstarted out on the slow side
today.
Miss Schmirnoff, Dollar Bill,Eagle Electric, and Miss
Madison.
And so Ron Muffin, if he is outto defend that Gold Cup, and I'm

(17:59):
quite certain that he uh intendson doing just that, he will have
to really charge in this heatbecause he not only is trailing
on points, but he is also behindon elapsed time, which may be
important in case of a tie.
All five boats are on the courseand running.
We're waiting the one minutegun.
This is the 56th running of theGold Cup, and it's shaping up as
one of the best.

(18:20):
And it's not even half over yet.
That's the incredible thing.
Three heats of action in, fourheats to go.
And I think some of our bestbattling and dueling of the day
is yet to come.
Ronnie Muffin turning into thecourse now with Bardall.
El Catrell sitting alongside ofhim in Mich turnout.
There's the one-minute gun.

(18:40):
The boats respond by charging tothe center of the course, and
that's Bardall cutting forpossession.
A roar in the background.
Eagle Electric and Madison arecoming up the back stretch.
Dollar Bill is turning around toget into the phrase.
Another start coming up D2B.
This one looks like a siddler.
As Ronnie Muskin is chargingwith that rolls engine.

(19:03):
A deep throat sound that he getsout of the Bardall.
Leo Vandenberg has workedtirelessly in the past few
months to get the Bardallrunning in top shape.
And although she was third atGuntersville, she looks like one
of the big contenders here.
Coming down with Schmirnoff now.
20 seconds to start.
Bardall will be in the center ofthe court.
On the inside, it looks like uheither Schmirnoff or uh Dollar

(19:27):
Bill.
A bad start for Eagle Electric.
Here comes Bardall in the centerof the court.
There's eight seconds left.
Most of the boats are throttleddown.
Miss Madison is going to make agood start.
Three seconds.
Here they go.

SPEAKER_03 (19:38):
Miss Madison and Mr.

SPEAKER_02 (19:40):
Fardall.
Miss Madison and Miss Fardallover the line first.
And then came Miss Mirall, followed by Dollarville.
Totem Evans and Eagle Electricgot a very, very bad start.

unknown (19:52):
He trails the field as they start down the first
stretch.

SPEAKER_02 (19:54):
Madison was in the lead as they came across.
Bardall was right next to him, though.
Ronnie got a good startalongside.
And he has now pushed Bardallinto the lead as they go down
the main stretch.
With Madison charging rightalongside of him.
The boats now move into thefirst turn.
It looks like the Green Dragonhas got it on the inside.
Miss Bardall.
Ronnie Muson out in front withthe Bardall.

(20:16):
Number U40.
Green, trimmed in yellow andblack.
A beautiful sight as she chargesdown past the Bell Al Bridge now
and moves out toward her run onthe back shooter.
P2B.
Second place is a battle betweenuh looks like uh Mishmirnoff and
Miss Madison.
They're about 100 yards nowalready behind the Bardall.
Mishmirnoff uh bouncing badlyover there is coming off the
corner now.

(20:36):
Is Ronnie Musin.
He's about one third of the wayunder a full bar.
Miss Madison is second.
Smirnoff now has come up and isdueling for third.
We're trying to pick out theother boats as they come down.
It looks like uh Dollar Billtrails the field.
Eagle Electric is back also inthe pack.
Now, two-thirds of the way downthe back shoot on his first to
five times around the course.
Ronnie Musson in the fire hallbounces wildly as he passes in

(20:58):
front of the sprout at theDetroit Yacht Club.
And he manages to keep herupright.
Second is Madison, he's 150yards behind.
Charging in his rooster tail isMichael, driven by Bill
Cantrell, a veteran of 19 GoldCup.
Fourth place, 300 yards behindin Eagle Electric, 400 yards
behind is Dollar Bell.
The boys are straining as theycome into the upper turn.
And the leader is Ronnie Musondriving Miss Bardall.

(21:21):
Here he comes down.
Uh passing the 1,000 foot markand moving down to finish lap
number one.
Bardall is over, finishing lapnumber one, 105 miles an hour
for Miss Bardall in the firstlap.
Here's Miss Madison second.
Trying to fight off a challengeof Bishnoff driven by Bill
Cantrell.
And he is getting a rough ridein that new boat.

(21:43):
Bouncing wildly.
Here's Eagle Electric fourth.
And Tomerville is fifth as theycome by.
The leader is Miss Bardell now.
Going into the turn by the BellAo Bridge.
He has an eight-second lead overMiss Madison.
He is 13 seconds ahead of MishSchmirnoff.
Fourth place, Eagle Electric, who got a bad start.
Norm Evans has come up fast.

(22:03):
He's smoking uh quite a bit.
They're running a bit rich as hecomes by and he pits.
But uh he is still fourth.
Dollar bill driven by21-year-old Billy Schumacher is
last.
Running in fifth spot.
He's giving a good account ofhimself, though.
He has charged very hard on theheels of those leaders.
And Miss Bardall with a big leadcomes off the exit mark and
starts down for the second offive times.

(22:24):
And Ronnie Muston right where helikes to be now, all alone.
Out in front.
He has the good water.
He's halfway down the backshoot, leveling out the rooster
tail, kicking.
He's getting a good ride.
His rooster tail is smooth.
He's starting to bounce a littlebit now.
And the nose seemed to go downslightly, but he kicks it again.
And he now holds a 350-yard leadover Madison.
Schirnoff is third.

(22:44):
And I noticed that EagleElectric and Dollarville have
closed the margin somewhat onSchirnoff and Madison in the
race for second and third.
And Ron is now cut downconsiderably coming into the
upper turn.
He is not going to take anychances yet.
There will be plenty of actionleft in this Gold Cup race after
this.
Heat is over.
Madison is just not uh ridingvery well in this rough water.

(23:06):
Buddy Byers is still second, buthaving trouble hanging on to
that uh steering wheel.
He's bouncing wildly.
Here comes Fardall down now tofinish lap number two.
Bouncing a little bit.
And uh Ron took his hand off thewheel and kind of shook it.
I don't know if he is uh if he'sgot a sore wrist or something.

(23:28):
He's bouncing very, very badlyout here and uh could be shaken
up a bit.
Miss Madison is over second now.
Arnold's time, three minutes 30seconds.
Here's Michael's third.
Going over.
And now the boats are startingto fan out.
Eagle Electric is running very, very well.
And then on his point.

(23:51):
And now Billy Shoemaker ismoving in, trying to challenge
Norm Evans for fourth positionin the California boat dollar
bill.
Miss Farnell, three minutes andthirty seconds at the end of two
laps.
He leads by 11 seconds over MissMadison by 17 seconds over Miss
Schmirnoff.
He's coming off the lower cornerjust as Miss Madison reaches the
third marker boy, and just theSchmirnoff is coming in.

(24:13):
His time on that second lap wasa minute 47, 101.
So Harris Carl Miss is provingto be the boat that is
performing best thus far todayin the Gold Cup in this rough
water.
But uh perhaps this isn't thecase.
Perhaps Ronnie Musson, who's inthe lead right now, and heat to
be is just sitting back, savinghis engine.

(24:33):
He has got a great crew behindhim and is still to be reckoned
with.
He's leading in Heat 2B.
If he wins it, he'll have 700points and will move him to
second place overall.
Bardo now passing the yachtclub.
He's not taking any chances.
He is throttling down well infront of those yacht club docks.
Second place now, Miss Madison, about 350 yards behind, has

(24:54):
opened up a good margin onSpernoff.
The boats are fanning out.
And now here comes Dollar Bell.
Billy Schumacher making a greattry to pass Norm Evans out on
the back shoot.
They are dueling bow to bow outthere in uh fourth and fifth
place.
Here's uh Arnall now finishinglap number three.
Uh Ronnie Muston over the line, finishing lap number three, five

(25:17):
minutes and fourteen seconds.
His time on that lap 104.
104 for Bardall.
Uh we've heard that ChuckThompson may have done a lap at
112 here in the last heat.
Unofficial, however.
And Madison is now runningsecond.
Third place, Mish Murdoff.
And now Billy Schumacher isdriving beautifully on these

(25:37):
turns.
Charges inside with Dollar Bell, and he has taken fourth place
away from Norm Evans.
Some great driving by BillyShoemaker.
He moves into fourth place now, driving his first goal cup rate.
He has passed Eagle Electric andnow he's going out after Bill
Cantrell.

(25:58):
A real creditable job of drivingbeing done by Billy Shoemaker.
We're in the fourth lap.
Bardall leads Ms.
Madison by 19 seconds.
He leads Miss Smyrnoff by 29seconds.
Ronnie Muston now is a third ofthe way down the back shoot on
his fourth of five times aroundthe course.
Hope you're enjoying this GoldCup race.
The 56 run coming to you fromDetroit over Radio King, your

(26:19):
hydroplane station.
Bill Jerusalek here on theGarwood judges stand.
Bardall two-thirds of the waynow.
And number U-40, the defendingchampion in the lead, with uh
one of the many televisioncameras that are here hovering
along in a helicopter.
Bardall now has passed theacceleration mark and is into

(26:40):
the upper turn.
He is leading by about a mileover Miss Madison.
Madison seems to be slowing downa little bit.
Let's go down through the field.
Bardall is coming off the upperturn on his fourth lap.
Madison is just passing theoutclub, a mile behind.
About 300 yards behind MissMadison is Mitch Murnoff.

unknown (26:57):
Third.

SPEAKER_02 (26:57):
Fourth place, Dollar Bill, fifth place, a lap, uh,
half a lap behind.
Miss Angel Richard.
That was Ron Lussen going by.
And Miss Bardall, defendingnational champion, defending
Gold Cup champion.
And he is sitting very, verywell today in the Gold Cup,
leading in heat to be.
He will have 700 points if hemanages to last out this one

(27:21):
last lap.
And he has slowed down enoughthat he looks like he's staying
in real good position.
Miss Bardall in the lead as hemoves into the lower turn now by
the Bell Isle Bridge.
He's past the second markerboys.
Here's Bish Murdoff coming bythird.
Dollar Bill is still fourth.

(27:42):
Eagle Electric is fifth.
Miss Bardall is uh coming offthe corner now by the Detroit
Boat Club.

unknown (27:53):
Ron Musson.

SPEAKER_02 (27:56):
Ron Muson uh now is uh bouncing off that corner.
He puts his foot into thatBardall and charges down the
chute.
Miss Bardall, one of the mostsuccessful of unlimited hydro
plays, qualified at 117 miles anhour.
Ron Mussen, a man to watch.
He's been in three Gold Cups.
He's finished third, second, andfirst.

(28:17):
He's never been out of themoney, and he has not yet failed
to finish a heat in his Gold Cupcareer.
He has started 12 heats and he'scoming by.
Looks like he will finish his12th heat in a row.
Incidentally, Bill Mumpsyfinished his 14th consecutive
Gold Cup heat just a few minutesago.
He's moving in on one of GoldCup racing's all-time records,
held by Garwood.

(28:39):
Here is Miss Bardall now, comingoff the upper turn.
He will get the checkered flag.
It was a legal start for allconcerned.
Bardall coming off and comingdown to finish lap number five,
just as Miss Madison goes intothe turn.
Here's Miss Bardall, the winner.
Miss Bardall, the winner of EP.

(28:59):
Driven by Ron Muffin.
It's time, eight minutes and 45seconds.
Miss Madison now is in themiddle of the upper corner.
Just as Bill Cantrell and theShirnoff goes in.
Schmernoff has done riding wellat all.
He's bounced very, very badly onthe court.
And now Eagle Electric has comeright back.
Norm Evans has found some speed.
And Eagle Electric has comeback.

(29:20):
This is one of the best duels ofthe day.
Been put on here by Schumacherand uh and Norm Evans.
Madison comes over second, andSchmernoff is third, just as
Eagle Electric is dueling DollarBell in the upper turn for
fourth place.
They're battling it out upthere.
Here's Schmernoff coming bythird.
And uh Billy Schumacher is uhquite a driver.

(29:42):
Billy Schumacher rather uh tookthat turn just like uh a veteran
campaigner.
He's over the line fourth, andhere comes Eagle Electric fifth.
So although Dollar Bill finishedfourth, Bill Schumacher has
turned in some excellent drivinghere on this Gold Cup course.
He's only 21 years old and hasmany, many more races ahead of

(30:04):
him, I'm sure.
And uh he's winning quite a fewfriends here.
Uh quite a tier went up when hecame across ahead of Norm Evans.

SPEAKER_11 (30:13):
So the winner of B2B, the defending Gold Cup
champion, Ron Muffin.
His time 845.
He defeated Miss Madison by 39uh 29 seconds.

unknown (30:26):
Mr.

SPEAKER_11 (30:26):
Murdoff was third, Dollarville was fourth, Eagle
Electric was fifth.

SPEAKER_02 (30:32):
We'll have the unofficial times in just a
moment.
This Gold Cup coverage is beingbrought to you on Radio King by
Security Civisco.
Well, Miss Burnout uh supposedto be running in a groove out
here on the Detroit River.
Ron Muskin uh has done some finedriving here in Detroit in the
past.
Uh, we can recall back innineteen sixty when with uh a

(30:54):
boat called Nitrogen 2, hescored a magnificent victory in
the Silver Cup with a boat thatwas considered to be
underpowered.
And uh He has found a groovehere today.
His second heat time was almostidentical to his first, right?
Down to the second.
8 minutes 45 seconds.
Miss Bardal, the winner of Eat2B, unofficially 102.857.

(31:17):
Second place, Buddy Myers, driving in his first Gold Cup,
gave a very good account ofhimself with Miss Madison, but
just didn't have enough speed.
He finished second, 97472.

unknown (31:27):
Mr.

SPEAKER_02 (31:28):
Mirnoff, with Bill Cantrell driving, is uh
suffering from some obviousriding problems.
She came in third, 95.575.
Dollar Bill was fourth at94.076, and Eagle Electric
fifth, 93.264.
Bluechip failed to start thatheat.
So Miss Bardall now has 700points and moves into second

(31:51):
place.
Behind Tahoe Miss, ChuckThompson has 800.
The X side has 600.
Uh after uh running over a buoyon the third lap of Team 2A.

(32:16):
So Miss Burrell, the winner of2B, 102.857, Madison second,
Michurnoff third, Dollarvillefourth, Eagle Electric fifth,
Blue Chip failed to start.
Pardon me for just a second.
I had to catch my breath.
This uh is quite a spectacle, this Gold Cup race.
It's a tremendous day inDetroit.

(32:37):
85 wispy clouds in the sky.
Uh tremendous crowd.
Certainly do some of the oldtimers, uh, reminiscent of the
Carwood era, uh, when uh Detroituh was justly called the
Powerboat Capital of the World.
And uh once again with a$40,000prize uh coming off here at the
end of this race, Detroit atleast for uh this year on next

(33:00):
side, all up there tight.
And believe me, if you think thecharging and the hard driving is
over for this Gold Cup race, youare quite mistaken.
The first two heats are the veryearly elimination heats.
They are merely the skirmishing, you might say, the calm before
the storm, if you will.
It wasn't uh a very uh be calmedperiod with all of the dueling

(33:22):
out here, but nevertheless, Ithink we can expect that what we
have seen thus far was just aprelude to the things to come.

SPEAKER_11 (33:29):
Heats 3A and 3B are now being redrawn, and it will
be very, very important whodraws who, as at least six boats
are still in very, very closecontention for the lead here in
the Gold Cup race.

SPEAKER_02 (33:41):
Plenty of more action coming up on Radio King
or Hydroplane Station.
This is Bill Jersik in Detroit.
Stand by for the greatest showin power boating.
This Gold Cup coverage is beingbrought in the live cup.
Thank you very much, and uh goodafternoon to you.
Phil Jersik here on the DetroitRiver.

(34:02):
Uh I thought we would take thistime.
The five-minute gun is still afew minutes away.
We have a scheduled five-minutegun in a couple of minutes,
although no one is as yet on thecourse, but we do have plenty of
official times to give you, andI think we better run through
them.
Here is heat 2A.
Uh the winner there was TahoeMiss, and uh his average speed

(34:22):
was 106.759, and now that is thefastest heat thus far run today.
As a matter of fact, uh TahoeMiss has run the two fastest
heats of the day uh by any boatso far.
So 2A, Tahoe Miss the winner,106.759.
Uh Miss Xide was second,102.350.

(34:43):
Yale 5 was third, 99.878.
Uh Miss US5 was fourth, 87.687,and Notre Dame had to go an
extra lap uh for running overboy number 18 here in the upper
turn.
And Bill Muncie, who had a bitof tough luck when he uh just
lost control of the Notre Damefor a split second, averaged

(35:06):
81.020 and finished fifth.
And this will, of course, makehim hustle considerably to get
back into contention, and hemust, in fact, win heat 3A to
have a real good chance for therace.
Uh, the fastest lap of Heat 2Awas Tahoe Miss, the fastest lap
of of the race thus far,112.688, 112.688, and that was

(35:30):
the second lap when he movedpast the Notre Dame.
Uh, this Tahoe Miss uh didn'tshow much in the time trials,
but she has a lot uh in thatAllison engine.
And Chuck Thompson is driving avery heady race thus far, and uh
he has turned in the fastestheat time, and that was the
fastest lap thus far of therace, and was the fastest lap of
heat 2A.

(35:52):
Uh in heat 2B, the winner wasMiss Bardall, Ronnie Musson,
staying right in the groove,103.036 was his official
average.
Second was Miss Madison, 97.670.
Third was Miss Schmirnoff, driven by Bill Cantrell, 95.882.
Fourth, Dollar Bill, 93.938,just edging out Miss Eagle

(36:14):
Electric, who finished fifth at93.434.
The fastest lap on that heat wasvery, very slow, oddly enough.
104.509.
That was the first lap for MissBirdall.
Anyway, to make a seriouschallenge.
I call your attention to thelast lap of Heat 2A.
Miss Xide turned a lap at 111,and so uh the X side, which has

(36:36):
been plagued with uh somedifficulty here in the early
stages of the race, uh, came tolife there at the end of Heat
2A, and perhaps is to bereckoned with.
And believe me, the reckoninghas arrived.
Heat 3A.
Uh I don't know who was incharge of the draw down there,
but they couldn't have drawn itany better.
Here is Heat 3A, Notre Dame, driven by Bill Muncie.

(37:00):
Miss Exide, driven by Bill Brow.
Miss Bardal, the defendingchampion, Ronnie Musin driving,
Miss Smirnoff, driven by BillCantrell.
It's a rough fleet, and finallyBilly Schumacher, or shoemaker
rather, I keep uh forgetting.
Billy Schumaker, uh drivingDollar Bill.

(37:22):
Bill has had some pretty roughcompetition today, but he's
shown up extraordinarily well.
And uh the sixth boat listed forHeat 3A, uh, incredibly enough,
is Miss Budweiser.
She's not yet been scratchedfrom the race, and uh perhaps
Miss Budweiser will be back onthe course.
We don't know.
Uh there was no serious damage, but certainly the partial

(37:42):
sinking there would necessitatean engine change.
There is the five-minute gunanswered by no one at the
moment.
There is not a boat on thecourse and running at the
five-minute gun as yet.
Uh Miss Smearnoff has accepted atoll from its uh uh from its
tender for just a moment, andnow, after uh sputtering around
for a few minutes in the upperturn, Bill Cantrell is the first

(38:03):
to start.
So he's the first man out on thecourse.
And now we begin to talk aboutstrategy.
Of course, the strategy now arethe uh most of the marbles
belong in Chuck Thompson'sbasket at the moment.
With 800 points, he is sittingvery, very well, and he has
drawn certainly a significantlyeasier group of votes to compete

(38:25):
against in heat 3B than have thecontenders here in Heat 3A.
Urter Dame, Exide, and uh MissSmirnoff and Bardall will
certainly have to uh put on someterrific competitive drive to uh
place here because all of themneed points desperately to get
in near Tahoe Miss, who uh if hehappens to win 3B, will be

(38:48):
sitting in a tremendously goodposition.
So I need not uh remind you thatthis is going to be a very
desperate heat for some of theseboys, and we may see some
terrific battling.
There's ten thousand dollars inprize money waiting for the
winner.
That's a tremendous extraincentive.
Uh aside from the gold cupitself.
This is the richest gold cupever run,$40,000 in prize money.

(39:10):
Incidentally, the lap prizes Ihad listed here.
Uh Tahoe Miss has won nine lapsthus far at$100 each, Notre Dame
six and Bardal five.
And a constellation race, whichwas run in between heats of the
Gold Cup, went to such crustover Sever Mist and Mariner 2.
Uh, it was quite exciting, quiteclose to the dueling, but right

(39:30):
at the moment we are moreinterested in the Gold Cup.
Heat 3A is coming up.
It looks like a showdown.
This is Phil Jerzik at the GoldCup course.
I'll be back with a start of 3A.

SPEAKER_04 (39:40):
This Gold Cup coverage is being brought to you
by Security Savesco.
You have a preschool youngster.

SPEAKER_02 (39:47):
At this moment, all the boats are on the course and
running, and four of the top sixcontenders for the Gold Cup race
are running in Eat 3A.
Uh, we have Notre Dame with 527points, Xide with 600 points,
Mishvirnoff with 450, Bardallwith 700 points, and Dollar Bill
with 254 points.

(40:07):
So, if any one of these boats isto become a prime contender for
that final heat, they willcertainly be gunning here in 3A.
And at the same time, if anybodyelse, uh, say Dollar Bill or
Mish Mirnoff wants to make itinto that final heat, they will
have to make a very serious bid.

(40:27):
Here in Heat 3A, the one-minutegun is sounded 55 seconds now to
the start.

unknown (40:31):
The Thunderbolts are charging here on the Detroit
River.
Notre Dame is way at the back ofthe pack.

SPEAKER_02 (40:36):
Bill Muncie, Mishmirnoff on the backstretch
now is alongside of Bardall.
Maybe Cantrell will be watchingRonnie Muston very carefully.
Ron has made some good startstoday.
He's been very close.
Looking to the top of thecourse, Xide again is ahead of
the pack and will uh come downin the middle.
He's gonna be pretty early.
He's a half a minute now, and asa matter of fact, he turned now

(40:57):
and will try for a betterstarting position.
Xide will be way off on theoutside of the course.
Rather unusual for Bill Brown tocome over so far.
In lane uh one will be NotreDame.
Lane two, Dollar Bill, lanethree, Smurnoff, lane four,
Bardaugh, lane five, Xide, uhunder reduced speed as they come
down.
E3A, ten seconds away.
Here they come.
Xide will be throttled way, waydown, and will be Notre Dame and

(41:20):
Bardall under full baller asthey come down to the start.
They're off Notre Dame andBardall.
Notre Dame over first, followedby Bardal.
Gale was third, Dollarville wasfourth, and Bill Burrow in the X
side was throttled way, waydown.
He did not get a good start.
He came over last, and he islast on the outside now, running

(41:42):
full board down that chute, trying to bake up ground.
This is a long, long run to thestarting line.
It's more, or rather, to thefirst turn, Bowie.
It's about a mile, and it lookslike Bardall may have got in
there on Notre Dame.
Let's check him through thatturn.
Uh it looks like uh Notre Dameand Bardall are running about
side by side.
Notre Dame and Bardall are sideby side.

(42:04):
Dollar Bell is third.
Now moving into third is X side.
Dollar Bell is fourth, andMurnoff is fifth going through
the corner.

unknown (42:11):
They're off the first marker boy now, and Notre Dame
has taken the lead overBardaugh.

SPEAKER_02 (42:14):
Notre Dame leads Bardall by a length and a half
as they come off the exit mark, and they're a third of the way
now.
Acceleration is true uhterrific.
This is going to be a fast heat.
And Notre Dame dug in and took aterrific leap.
And now that gave Bardall the uhadvantage.
Bardaugh was running, Mustoncharging in the lead.
This is a terrific goal.
They're bowed about as they cometo the unclub, and they are

(42:35):
moving.
Oh my! Full blast into thisturn.
Bardall is bouncing! Oh, hangon! Oh run, Musson bouncing.
Notre Dame is bouncing everyalongside of one another.
X Dide is coming up on him.
X Dide is third and charging.
Oh, Bardaugh bounced veryviolently.
Notre Dame is pulling to theside of the course.
Muncey is pulling to the side ofthe course.

(42:56):
The Rick Flares are out.
Somebody was perhaps thrown outof his boat out there.
We heard a terrific loud retort.
Uh such as a power letting go.
I don't know what happened.
Uh the Rick Flares are out.
Uh we're wondering exactly why.
Muncie is still in Notre Dame,it looks like.
Yes, he is still in the boat.
And they're coming by.

(43:16):
Munsey sitting there.
Bardall is second.
And uh I don't exactly know whatit was.
Uh the red flares are out allover the course.
A magnificent duel down intothat second turn.

(43:40):
Uh with Bardall leading, NotreDame coming in a very, very
close second, and uh X side wasgating rapidly.
Bill Brown came from last placeand was just barreling up on the
pack.
A fantastic duel developing, anduh we're not exactly sure what
happened down there.
Uh perhaps uh it looked for themoment like something happened

(44:01):
to Notre Dame.
Uh Muncie did cut two buoys uhafter he spun there, but uh then
it uh we thought at firstperhaps Bill was thrown out of
the boat.
We wanted to wait and seebecause the boat was still under
f uh power.
And uh just considerable millingabout here on the judges' stand.
Everybody is muttering andwhispering exactly, trying to

(44:24):
find out what happened downthere.
And uh we certainly do not knowthe reason for the heat
stoppage.
None of the five boats appearedto be seriously damaged.
Notre Dame did have quite ablotch of oil on the right side,
but uh it did not appear thatany of the boats were uh damaged

(44:48):
too severely, and it didn'tappear that any driver had been
thrown in the water, so perhapsthis was uh somebody jumping the
gun there on a flare.
Uh we don't exactly know thereason, but we uh certainly had
a phenomenal heat in progresswhen the red flares went out.
Well, everybody is off thecourse, and uh that's it.

(45:10):
The first running is over ofheat 3A almost before it began.
It was a fine start.
Bardall and Notre Dame came overtight.
X side trailed the field butjumped into third through the
turn.
Notre Dame let off the corner, but then Ronnie Mussen and the
Bardall charged by him whenNotre Dame bounced violently on
the back shoot, and they bothwere both were porpoising and

(45:35):
bouncing wildly as they wentpast the Detroit Yacht Club.
My oh my.
Uh I just hope everybody staysall glued together over there.
It certainly was hectic.
And X side, Bill Brown had hisfoot right down to the shaft
almost on X side.
He was really barreling afterthose two leaders.

(45:56):
So, whatever the problem was, wecertainly can't speculate.
Uh we have not received anyofficial word of what was wrong
or whatever.
I see a cruiser being towedaway.
Uh I'm wondering if a cruiserdrifted into the course.
There is a cruiser being towedaway by a Coast Guard boat.
Uh Muncie swerved very, veryquickly uh to avoid something

(46:19):
down there.
We thought he spun maybe uhpossibly a pleasure boat, got
out into the middle of the GoldCup course.
Uh certainly no place to be onrace day, I'm afraid.
Well, we don't exactly know whatwe can expect next.
I see they are still going toleave Miss Shemirnoff out in the
water, so whether or not we willstart this next heat immediately
remains to be seen.

(46:42):
Well, there just is no justice, that's all I can say.
We had one of the mostoutstanding battles coming up
here uh that one can imagine.
If you can imagine uh Muncie,Mussen, and Brough all barreling
into a turn together, that'swhat we had going for us.
Uh Bardal leading Notre Dame bya bottom length, and Exide just
coming up full bore into theirrooster tails uh without

(47:05):
shutting down as they reachedthe deceleration buoy uh by the
yacht club.
And then all of a sudden, uhNotre Dame swerved to the center
of the course.
Bardal uh went to the outside, and Exide shut down rather
quickly.
The boy the boats were bouncing.
I thought for a moment thatsomeone may have been thrown
out, but apparently, and we saythis uh only trying to estimate

(47:30):
what happened, apparently acruiser had maneuvered into the
middle of the Gold Cup course.
Uh, you and I know that that iscertainly no place to be when
Muncie, Musson, and Brow aremoving in uh under a full head
of steam.
But amazing as it seems, I thinkthat's what may have happened.
He slipped past the Coast Guard.
Uh, we still haven't receivedany official confirmation, we

(47:52):
have no details.
The Smirnoff is still out in thewater, and uh, it remains to be
seen whether we will have animmediate restart or whether
they'll put the boys in thepits.
I think we had best turn it backto our studios.
Uh for the moment, there is noone else coming out on the
course.
Son of Heat 3A of the 1964 GoldCup.

(48:15):
Bill.
Well, the drama begins toheighten as Notre Dame sits dead
in the water.
Uh, we're about three minutes tothe one-minute gun.
Notre Dame is still dead in thewater, unable to get started for
the rerun of Heat 3A.
Uh, it's a shame we have to runthis one over, but the official
word was that the race wouldstop in the interests of safety,

(48:35):
and Pleasure Boat was in theupper turn.
Uh the Pleasure Boat himself wasuh not moving at the time.
He was just drifting across thecourse, and this was the reason
all of the boats swerved sowildly uh when they went into
that turn.
So Bill Muncie, who's havingsome difficulty today, uh,
almost uh claimed another uhcruiser, or not a Coast Guard

(48:56):
cutter, but a cruiser this time.
Fortunately, being the gooddriver that he is, he managed to
avert a disaster here on theDetroit River.

unknown (49:04):
We're coming up on the one-minute gun.

SPEAKER_02 (49:06):
We'll be back for the running of Eat 3A.

unknown (49:08):
This is Phil Jerzik in Detroit.

SPEAKER_02 (49:10):
This Gold Cup coverage being brought to you by
Security Civisco.
Bill Muncie can't get his boatstarted.
This is a rough break.
Certainly is one of the topcompetitors in Gold Cup
competition, sitting dead in thewater right now in front of the
pit, and he is in a veryprecarious position.

(49:30):
He is almost in the middle ofthe first straightaway, which is
no place to be after this racebegins.
Uh, it's about uh half a milefrom here to there, but still he
is out in the middle of thecourse, sideways, trying to get
Notre Dame under fire.
Eckside, Bardal, Schmirnoff, andDollar Bell are out on the

(49:51):
course.
He seems to have stood up in thecockpit.
He's moving forward now to theengine.
He's in a very bad position, andperhaps he has given up the
ghost.
There's the one-minute gun.
He's not on the course and he'snot running.
Notre Dame will not make thisheat.
3A.

(50:12):
He will have to accept the towand be pulled off the course.
A very, very tough break on theDetroit River for Bill Munsey,
who just can't seem to buy anyluck the last two years here in
the Gold Cup.
He's a four-time winner, and heis standing on the deck of Notre
Dame as the other boats now.
Begin to move to the top of thecourse, and they are
skirmishing.

(50:32):
And we have the shape up.
That was too bad.
The first stoppage.
There's another boat, anothercruiser is out on the course,
right in line of the start.
Another cruiser is out thererunning.
I don't know what he's doingthere, but we've got 20 seconds
before the start, and he got inthe way of one or two of the
boats as they came down.
Uh hexide is throttled way downwith 10 seconds left.

(50:54):
It's going to be a good startfor the Bridgall and GL5 as
they're under a full head ofsteam.
Here they come.
Everybody's throttled down.
Here's the gun.
And in a row of acceleration.
Oh my! Uh, that was what can yousay?

(51:15):
All four boats were almoststanding dead still when they
came to the starting line, andthey're off.
Ronnie Musson managed to keep upenough boat speed to charge into
the lead.
Smurov was second.
Exide was third, and we noticeXide is already moving very,
very quickly into contention.
And a very, very dejected BillMuncie on the deck of Notre

(51:35):
Dame, dead in the water in frontof the pits.
In the lead.
Let's see.
It looks like uh Dollar Bill isin the lead.
This is incredible.
Dollar Bill is in the lead, driven by Billy Schumacher.
Dollar Bill and Bardall come offthe corner with Schmirnoff

(51:55):
trailing, and Xide is way backin the pack right at the moment,
coming off that corner.
And now Bardall with RonnieMuson at the one-third mark in
the back stretch has come outinto the lead.
Ronnie Muson in the Bardall ischarging, but he is having a
rough time of it with uh BillySchumacher of Dollar Bell.
Dollar Bill giving a trim givinga tremendous account of itself

(52:18):
here in Heat 3A rerun.
Bardall in the lead as he goesby the outfit.
He has a lead of two lengthsthird Schmidhoff, and again a
stern chase for Xide.
He's last.
Bill Barrow's last, and he'strying to make up ground.
Here's Bardall bouncing throughthe turn.
Bardall not performing uh aswell as we would expect.
And uh Bardall swinging wide.
Uh Billy Schumacher and DollarBarrow cutting in.

(52:40):
And uh Ronnie Wilson had just alittle too much acceleration
that he let him off the corner.
Here comes Miss Bardall nowleading at the end of left
number one.
Miss Bardall.
Followed by Dollar Bell.
Here's Michael right in thirdplace and coming in fourth, and
really charging is Miss Xide.

(53:02):
105.
105 the average for Bardall onthe first lap.
Miss Bardall in the lead overDollar Bell by three seconds.
Miss Bardall leads.
Dollar Bell is second.
Xide is now moving up on Gale 5in the race for third.

unknown (53:15):
We're in lap number two.

SPEAKER_02 (53:16):
The rerun of Heat 3A.
A terrific duel washed out by apleasure boat on the course.
We had to stop the first runningof 3A at the end of
three-quarters of a lap.

unknown (53:26):
And now in the rerun, Ronnie Muston has things his own
way after dueling momentarilywith the Dollar Bell.

SPEAKER_02 (53:31):
Xide is now moving into third place in the lower
corner.
Off the corner now, all theboats are in the turn, and all
of them are dueling tight.
They're all within about 200yards of each other now.
Bardall pulling to 150-yardlead.
Terrific acceleration.
Bardall moves off there verybriskly.
He's already halfway down thatback shoot and just moving out
beautifully.
Ronnie Muson in miss.

(53:53):
Bardall in the lead.
Second is Dollar Bill.

unknown (53:55):
And he's piling back rapidly.
And Bill Burr on the X side isbarreling in the third now, and
he's coming up on second place.

SPEAKER_02 (54:02):
Dollarville.
Bill Burr is really giving thatX side a drive after getting a
very bad start.
He's piling by the Dollar Bell.
And Xide now is dueling.
And he slows down as they go bythe air club, and Dollarville
holds on to second.
Miss Burnall is coming out ofthe turn now first, just as Xide
and Dollarville go in.
And Bill Burr, I think, uhdecided that he'd better wait

(54:25):
and try and take Dollar Bell thenext time around.
Here now is Miss Bardallfinishing lap number two.
He's coming by three minutes and22 seconds at the end of two
laps.
He has about a nine or tensecond lead.
And here comes Dollar Bill justhanging out over Exxide.
Just barely.

(55:02):
A boat that has never gone thisfast competitively.
And by George, he has stilloutfought Xide as they go down
the first stretch.
He has still outlasted X side.
And as the Bardall comes off thelower corner in the lead, Barney
Musson continues to drive inthat groove at about 100-3, and
he bounced very, very badlycoming off that corner, but he
held it.

(55:23):
And uh X side and Dollar Bellare still battling furiously
through that corner.
Billy Schumaker, a rookie inthis Gold Cup race, who uh need
a little bit of water in thefirst heat, and then uh
outdoored Norm Evans in thesecond, has come back and has
done a great job driving, butXide has now slipped by him on
the outside, and Xide hascharged into second, although

(55:45):
Dollar Bell is staying rightwith him.
Barnall is uh now just comingdown to the end of the back
stretch on lap number three.
The Gold Cup race 1964.
X side is now moving intosecond.
Dollar Bill is third, and MishMirnoff just not performing
today, is running fourth andtrails afield about a mile
behind.
We hope you're enjoying thisGold Cup race coming to you on

(56:06):
your hydroplane station.

unknown (56:07):
Radio King.
This is Phil Drizick in theGarwood judges stand.

SPEAKER_02 (56:10):
Don't go away.
Plenty of action to come.
And Ron Hussen is going to besupplying a lot of it.
Here he goes over the line.
Bardall finishing the thirdleft.
He's running about 106 now.
He's up his speed to almost 108this time.
And in hunt pursuit now is PhilBall.
He is pouring it on with MissXide.

(56:30):
Here goes Xide finishing secondat the end of left three.
And Xide is really moving onafter Bardall.
Dellerville is third.
14 seconds.
So Bill Brown has managed tohold his position in second.

(56:53):
Actually, in the last lap, hemoved from third to second, but
he has not lost any ground toBardall, which is good.
He is still about 350 yardsbehind.
He's uh trailing by 14 seconds.
Ron Mustin apparently saw him,and he has started to perch
pretty hard now on Bardall.
He's averaging almost 107 forthis heat.
Heat 3A of the Gold Cup.
We had four of the top boatsgoing in the first running, and

(57:16):
then Notre Dame couldn't getstarted.
And uh now in the rerun, it'sBardall again.
The boat that was leading thefirst running, out comfortably,
leading down the back shoot,two-thirds of the way is Ronnie
Muston.
His rooster tail is flat.
He is riding very, very well onthis lap.
Uh he skipped a little bit infront of the yacht club as he
goes past the deceleration markand into the upper turn, but he

(57:36):
is holding a comfortable leadover Miss X side.
The boats are well fanned out, although they are all on the
back stretch.
Miss Bardall now is coming outof the upper turn just as Bill
Brough in X side is going in.
Leading by a couple hundredyards.
Halfway down the back stretch,Dollar Bill leads Miss
Schmirnoff in the race forthird.
And here comes Ron Muson nowover the line, starting the last

(57:58):
left.
Ronnie Musin driving MissBardaughl, the defending
champion.
He means business in this GoldCup race.
And he is moving into very solidcontention here.

(58:22):
And then uh Bardall outfoughthim coming off uh down the back
stretch.
Then uh on the third lap, X sidemoved into second, and now it is
Bardall X side, Dollar Bill, andMiss Schirnoff.
And now Miss Schirnoff driven byBill Cantrell is moving up very
rapidly on the Dollar Bill, andit looks like Bill Cantrell will

(58:42):
move his way now into thirdplace.
Although, once again, BillyShoemaker uh with a bolt that
right now doesn't seem to haveenough power, he's certainly
giving it all he has from adriving standpoint.
Burley Musson stepped on a padlap.
He went through that one at aminute 39, 109, so he knew the
next side was behind him, and hecharged right out.

(59:06):
Great driving by Ron Muson.
He's skipping a little bit overon the back shoot, but he knows
he's in pretty comfortable shapehere in heat 3A.
If he wins it, he'll have 1100points and will be one of the
top two or three boats.
He certainly can't be any worsethan second as he enters the
final heat.
And if anything happens to Tahoemiss, Bardall may well be in the

(59:29):
lead.
Here comes Ron Lusson now offthe last marker boy and miss
Bardall.
And the checkered flag is outfor Bardall.
He's got a very comfortablelead.
Here he comes, the winner ofheat 3-8.
And Ron was very, very pleasedat winning that heat.
That is his 13th consecutiveheat in Gold Cup competition

(59:51):
that he has finished.
And he has finished 12 of themin the first three.
Here's Miss Xide now, driven byBill Brown, coming down to
finish his East 3A in secondplace.
The margin was 22 seconds.

(01:00:12):
So Ron saw that Xide was behindhim and he really turned it on.
And now a terrific battle forthird place as Bill Cantrell,
the old tiger, tries to take a21-year-old veteran in Dollar
Bell.
And on the last lap, BillCantrell moves into third place.
And he beat Dollarville out byjust about 15 yards.

(01:00:34):
And it looked like uh the DollarBill lost some boat speed coming
off that last corner.
Bill Cantrell charged in on himand took third.
And uh there was somespeculation that uh Dollar Bill
may have twisted a quill.
Billy Shoemaker has strolledright to the pit, so perhaps
there is a mechanical problemwhich hit Dollar Bill right at

(01:00:54):
the end of that particular heat.
Heat 3A, the first running, thewinner missed barred all by
twenty seconds.
Twenty-two seconds rather over Xside.
Forty-five seconds behind wasMiss Swerdhoff, driven by Bill
Cantrell.
And forty-seven seconds behindDollar Bill, driven by Billy

(01:01:15):
Schumacher.
We will um check the unofficialtimes of East 3A and remind you
that this Gold Cup race, the56th edition, here at Detroit,
is coming to you over Radio Kingand is being brought to you by
Security Savesco.

SPEAKER_04 (01:01:35):
Security Savesco makes it very easy for you to
start to save money.
With as little as one dollarbill, or with as much as$25,000.
I'm getting my minutes off here.

SPEAKER_08 (01:01:48):
Incidentally, since we started this thing, it's now
twice.
Let's see.
Turn it off.
Now it was ran about eight and ahalf minutes.
Well, what next?

SPEAKER_07 (01:02:07):
Where the clock has uh, you know, uh share and uh
just uh Jimmy V.

SPEAKER_10 (01:02:13):
I want to get this down too.
Jimmy Volkswagen the clock forthe case.

SPEAKER_07 (01:02:22):
I don't think we said too much about her racing.
She started on J U's and she wasabout 13 or so and she raced uh
for two or three years.
I think she raced uh on severaloccasions an A-star.
Right?

(01:02:43):
And uh she was uh one of thenational champions in 1955 in uh
D.
Lake Oregon, that's that trophyright there.
Well it was third, but I meanshe was a little waterbury or

(01:03:13):
something.

SPEAKER_10 (01:03:26):
Um about all different kinds of things.

SPEAKER_06 (01:04:14):
It's more than just going.

SPEAKER_02 (01:04:16):
Yeah, uh our goal, which we had going here in the
first running of Heat 3A didn'tmaterialize in the rerun.
Uh, for those of you who mayhave just tuned in, Heat 3A, the
original running, was stoopedafter three quarters of a lap
when a pleasure boat got out onthe course, and uh a very
serious accident was justnarrowly averted when Bill

(01:04:38):
Muncie swerved his Notre Dame toavoid a collision here in the
upper turn.
The race was shut down.
We came back for the rerun, andthen uh very unfortunately for
the Notre Dame camp for ShirleyMendelssohn McDonald, Dr.
Fraser McDonald, crew chief BudMelgram, and Bill Muncie
himself, a four-time winner.

(01:04:59):
The Notre Dame could not getstarted for the rerun of E3A.
Certainly, we are not pleasedabout that.
Uh there are occasions, ofcourse, where a boat blows, and
then it's not so bad, but whenthey don't even start for the
competition, well, uh youcertainly feel rather bad that

(01:05:19):
they couldn't have at least gotin the swim.
And uh it looked like quite athing in the first running of
3A.
The second running, Dollar Billgot into the first turn first
after a very poor start by allcontenders.
Oh, the boys have been a littletoo uh jumpy here at the start
today.
They've all had a tendency to uhto come down for the start uh a

(01:05:40):
bit uh too early, and as aresult, all four of the stars
were throttled down here as westarted E3A.

unknown (01:05:48):
But Dollar Bill came into the turn first.
Bardall took uh Billy Shoemakerin the first turn, and then
dueled briefly on the backstretch and then went on to lead
all the laps and win the heat.
Uh Dollar Bill gradually fellback.
Miss Xide moved into second onthe third lap, stayed there 22
seconds behind.
Uh Mish Mirner finally caughtDollar Bill right here at the

(01:06:09):
judges' stand as they finishedthe heat and beat him out by
about a second.

SPEAKER_02 (01:06:12):
Here the unofficial times, it was the fastest heat
of the day so far.
Murdoch unofficially, 108 milesan hour even for the five laps,
eight minutes and twentyseconds.
And on elapsed time, this willstart to bring him in very close
to a home miss now.
A position which, of course, hewants to be in before the final
heat starts.
Miss Xide was second, 103.448unofficially.

(01:06:36):
Miss Murdoch was third, 99.082.
Dollar Bill was fourth, 98.720.
And uh on points now, at the endof three heats, Birdall has
1100, Xide has 900, and BillBurrow just can't seem to get
off that second place spot.
He's been hampered by some badstarts, and they have cost him

(01:06:59):
points uh in each of his threeheats thus far.
So Xide has 900, and then MissSmirnoff has 675.
That should be good enough toget all three of those boats
into the final heat.
In the running of heat 3B, whichwe expect in about another 15
minutes, we will have MissMadison still very much in the
running.
Miss Eagle Electric, Gail Fox inthe boats who made the fastest

(01:07:21):
lap in heat into the leadingmechanic of the race.
I saw a boat pull into the pits.
I wasn't sure who it was.
Uh Miss Madison is on the backstretch.
There is Miss Xide.

(01:07:44):
I wonder if that was Terry HomeMiss.
I didn't get a look at him.
Uh Mr.
Strandoff is on here.
The boat that pulled to the pitswas Termole Miss.
Term Miss was on the course atthe five-minute gun and then
went into the pits for somereason.
I don't exactly know what theproblem was, but I hope it isn't
serious.
This is no time to be caughtreturning uh for any repairs of

(01:08:06):
any sort.
There certainly is not enoughtime.
The boats must be on the courseand hunting at the one-minute
gun.
Five boats on the course.
Tarhole miss in the pits.
We're waiting for it to comeout.
The 1964 Gold Cup is at stake.
This is Still Jersey in Detroit.
You're listening to the Golf Cupracing radio King.
This coverage being brought toyou by Security Cinesco.

(01:08:27):
You have a preschool youngsterin your home.
Thank you very much, everyonelooking with expectancy toward
the pits.
Tarhole Miss is in the pits andhas not come out, and we are
within a minute or two of the ofthe one-minute gun.
We don't know the reason whyChuck Thompson pulled into the
pits.
He's leading the race with 1200points.
He has a 14-second lead onelapsed time.

(01:08:48):
This would be a terrific breakfor both Bardall and X side.
Uh especially for Rodney Muston, who currently holds a 200-point
lead over Xide.
And everyone is still lookingexpectantly at the pits to try
and see a sign of Tahoe Miss, who is not coming out yet.
This is really unbelievable.
Tahoe Miss 1,200 points on threestraight heat victories, and he

(01:09:11):
is still in the pit.
U.S.
Miss Smyrna, Xide, Madison, andBurno are on the course and
running.
They're all milling around, waiting for the start of the
final heat of the 56th runningof the Gold Cup race here in
Detroit.
And the leading boat in the raceis in the pit.

(01:09:36):
Duke Thompson, who has never wona Gold Cup race before, victim
of tough luck in the past.
We can't even begin to imaginewhat could have happened to him.
He was out on the course, cruising around, and then
suddenly returned to the pits.
No sign of Tahoe Miss.
He is not started up again.

(01:09:57):
And of course, he must be on thecourse and running at the
one-minute gun, and all theboats are shaping up for the
start.
And the leading boat in the raceis not present.
There.
He's starting up.
He's trying to get started now.
We see him in the fifth tryingto get started.
They're coming for the start.
He'll never make it.
Unless he gets there's theone-minute gun.
Tahoe miss can't get started.
He was underway, which means hewill not be disqualified.

(01:10:20):
But he doesn't have a ghost of achance of getting up here before
the start of the race.
Um, and of course, he would haveto come in no worse than second
in order to time Miss Bardo.
Were he to come in third?
Bardo would win the race onpoints if he wins the heat.

(01:10:42):
30 seconds to go.
The goal cup is not going towait for Chuck Thompson.
He is trying to get across thecourse.
He's not under any speed.
This is a tremendous turn ofevents, of course.
He had to pass his left, he wonevery heat, and with 15 seconds
left, Darnell Miss is going tomiss the big show.

(01:11:02):
They're coming down to thestarting line now.
In first place, it's excitedBardo is really underhead of
steam, though.
Is it Miss Burnoff?
U.S.
here they come.
Five seconds.
There's the gun.
It's Miss Burnoff.

SPEAKER_03 (01:11:16):
And Miss Xide.

SPEAKER_02 (01:11:20):
Miss Burn off and Miss Xide are over the line.
And Bardo is third.
And Bardo is right in thesprays.
Right with them now.
He's now moving up toward thelead.
Miss U.S.
is running in third position.
And off Miss Madison was on theoutside of the course, and we
can't see what third problem is.
Tartle misses on the backstretch.
Tartle down.

(01:11:40):
He has not yet come to thestarting line.
This certainly must rate as oneof the most tremendous turns of
fate in the history of the GoldCup race.
There have been many, but thisone is one of the most bizarre
and strangest of all.
Shame for Toddle Miss.
Bardall is ranked third now.
X side is in the lead.
Xide leading.
There are two of the boats infront of Bardall.

(01:12:02):
Eckside is first coming off thecorner.
Miss Madison is in there.
Miss Svirnoff doing.
Bardall is third.
Now we see it is uh in firstplace.
Miss Xide.
Second is Madison third.
Bardall coming up very, veryfast.
And he's fully up on uh Xide, infact.
Bardall is now second, coming upon Miss Madison, and it's X

(01:12:24):
side.
Bardall second, Madison third, forward to Svirnoff, fifth is
US, and now Miss Madison chargesback in front of Miss Bardaugh.
And the three bolts are chargingdown the stretch.
We were trying to keep our eyesthere on Carol Miss, who is just
now coming by to start.
He's coming over the line abouta minute and a half late.

(01:12:52):
Hardall is third.
Here they come down to finishthe first half.

SPEAKER_03 (01:12:57):
He can still win this race.

SPEAKER_02 (01:13:00):
Here's Xide on the line, followed by Madison.
Bardall third.
Right now.
Terrifically close building hereat the end of the first lap of
the race.
Here's Miss Burnout fourth.
MCOS is running fifth.
For Xide.
X side first.

SPEAKER_03 (01:13:22):
Miss Madison second.

SPEAKER_02 (01:13:23):
Bardall is third.
Miss Bernard needs to finishthird to win the race.
We've just been checking onpoints.
If Bardo finishes third, he willhave 1,325 points.
X side will have 1,300.
Birdall will win the race onpoints.
And uh Tarl Miss, if he finishesfifth, we'll have 1,327 points.
That means that uh Ronnie Mustonmust take second place down

(01:13:45):
there.
And he has just come up onMadison now.
It is Xide.
Madison and Bardall doublingback there.
They're off the upper turn andstarting down, the lower turn
rather, and starting down theback shoot.
It is Xide in the lead.
Miss Madison second.
Bardo is sitting in third.
If Bardo finishes third, he willhave 1325.

(01:14:05):
If Talho Miss finishes sixth, hewill have 1295.
So Bernie Lesson is alright ifhe sits back in third place just
so Toho Miss doesn't move up.
Coming down now to finish hisfirst lap is Paul Home Miss
running very rough.

(01:14:26):
Poho miss running very rough.
Here's X side leading.
Hill Purrow on the X side comingthrough the upper turn to finish
his second lap.
X side is first, Madison issecond.
Notre Dame is third.
Neal is fourth.
Uh is fourth, River, and Eaglemisses fifth.
Hill Furrow in the lane, followed by Miss Madison.

(01:14:52):
Burnoff is fourth.
The only way that Chuck Thompsonwill have a chance to win this
race is if Sarnoff or U.S.
pops out.
Then he will finish fifth.
He'll have 1327 points.

(01:15:14):
Arnoff running very, very rough.
At the end of two laps, theleader, Miss Xi.
Four seconds, the leader, MissXi.
Four seconds ahead of MissMadison.
Ten seconds ahead of uh MissBruno is there.

(01:15:35):
Incredibly enough, Carl Missstill has a chance to win the
Gold Cup race.
Yes, he can either catch MissU.S., which in his present phase
he will most certainly not do.
Or if one of the both of therunning Miss Bardall clonks out.
That's Galen uh SwordhouseBrother and U.S.
They're both running very well,however.

(01:15:56):
Let's put on through the field.
We're on the third lap of five.
The leader is X side, driven byBill Bowler coming by the yacht
club.
He has a 200-yard lead overMadison, a 400-yard lead over
Miss Fardall.
He is running about a mile aheadof Miss Burnoff and about a half

(01:16:19):
a lap ahead of US 5, who is justcruising.
In the lead, in the final heatis Bill Burrall from Seattle
driving Miss X-Dye from Seattle.
And he's having a lot of troublekeeping that X-Dide running.
Bill here.

(01:16:49):
At the end of the third lap,X-Side leads by eight seconds
over Madison by 15 seconds overBardall.
The average speed is 105.
And Tahoe misses the only chanceto win the Gold Cup race, and I
don't think Ron Lussen evenknows this.
Is if Cowhole Miss can pass MissUS and move into fifth place.

(01:17:10):
Miss US is just finishing herthird lap.
Calhoun Miss is running uhroughly.
He's been running 40 secondsbehind U.S.
He was a minute behind, then 43behind.
He's been gaining uh a lot ofground.
He still has a lot more groundto make up, however, so there
still is a chance for Carl Miss.
It's a very slim one, though,and I don't even think Chuck

(01:17:31):
Thompson knows it.
Down the back stretch of leftnumber four now is Xi, followed
by Miss Madison.
Miss Bergall is third.
Bergall is content to sit back.
And uh I don't think Ron Muskinrealizes, uh I don't think
anybody realizes that if TajoMiss finishes fifth, he will win

(01:17:52):
the race.
Ronnie Musson certainly doesn'trealize it.
He's just cruising out there.
Mick Thompson is starting totell Home Miss.
He is uh long, long way behind, but he's now 25 seconds behind
U.S.
He's gaining about 15-18 secondsa lap.
He may still do it.

(01:18:12):
I don't know.
You can't tell anything canhappen in a goal cup race.
Here's Miss Exercise coming downto finish his fourth lap.
Hill Burl.
Hill Burrow coming down tofinish his fourth lap, followed
by Miss Madison with Bardallthird.
And Ron Russin is starting tocharge a lot harder down.
I think Ron Russin sees thatTown Hall misses out on the

(01:18:33):
court, and he's charging inthird place.
He's starting to move in now.
Chuck Thompson can pass withU.S.
And if he made a legal start, hewill have 1,327 points.

(01:18:57):
Bergho will have 1325 if hecontinues where he is.
I don't think Ronaldin knows it.
And maybe Chuck Thompson doesn'teven know it.
X side is in the lead.
Madison is second.
They are running on their lastlap, but the race may be back
here at the rear of the back.
Uh the U.S.
only has a lap and a quarter togo.
Tahoe Miss has even less.

(01:19:19):
Coming off the corner now at thetop uh side of the course, it's
Xide.
One third of the way down theback shoot on his last lap
around the course.
Madison is second, Bardall isthird.
Tahoe misses coming up onMatthew S.
Tajo misses gaining on MatthewS.
This may be one of the mostfantastic finishes in Gol Cup

(01:19:39):
history.
Xide is winning the final eight.
I don't think the phone has everwon the race while finishing
last.
Talho misses margin downtremendously.
This is wild.
I am not all of this isunofficial.
Believe me, it's incredible.
It could only happen in Golf Cupboat racing.
Miss Xide in the lead.

(01:20:01):
Madison second.
Bardall is scared, but Bardallshould finish second.
Ronnie Mustom is sitting backtoo much.
If Powell miss catches EOS andhe's gaining out him, he left
1327 points.
Here's Xide over the linewinning the Farrow heat.
Xide hover.
1,300 points for X side.
1,300 points.
Here's Miss Madison second.

(01:20:21):
And here is Bardall third.
The appearance winner of theGold Cup.
It's here, the appearancewinner.
He comes over the line.
Bardo! Bardo had uh 1100.
He picks up 225.
He has 1,325 points.
Exit had 1,300.
Burrow misses coming up on U.S.
Five in the backstretch.
If he passes him, he can win theGold Cup race, and I'm not sure

(01:20:44):
that anyone knows it.
He will have 1,327 points.
He's getting at him.
Burl miss coming down the backstretch.

SPEAKER_03 (01:20:51):
Terrific staircase!

SPEAKER_02 (01:20:53):
One of the greatest comebacks in the history of Gold
Cup bulk racing out of theriver.
If his start was legal, PauloMiss can win the race.
If he passes this, he missed.
He's right, he's right to see alittle community for two.
He still has barely enough timeto stand him.
Is this further for the line?
Bob miss is frogle down! TableMiss is not coming after U.S.

(01:21:16):
Oh my! Here's US coming back, terrible missing win the backup
if he comes back to him!

unknown (01:21:21):
It's back to it! It's a five! That's the move!

SPEAKER_03 (01:21:27):
U.S.
is leading! U.S.
is leading! And he feeds it atall! Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! Oh!

SPEAKER_02 (01:21:38):
By the margin of a half of a boat length! Uh boat
length! Pardon me! By the marginof a half of a boat length! U.S.
finished fifth! Carl Missfinished sixth! And by the
incredibly narrow margin, MissBird Hall unofficially will win
the Gold Cup three for thesecond year in a row.

(01:22:02):
Oh, what a finish! Oh!

SPEAKER_03 (01:22:12):
What a finish.
There's a little more you cansay about it.

SPEAKER_02 (01:22:21):
Hickside won the final lead, finished with 1,300
points.
Madison was second with 1125.
Martell was third with 1,325points.
Spearnoff was fourth.
Miss US was fifth.
Total miss was sixth andfinishes with 1,295 points,

(01:22:44):
which will put him third.
The margin of difference, themargin of difference, a boat
length.
Oh my, oh my.
We almost won.
We did anyway.
We did anyway have one of themost unbelievable finishes in
Gold Cup history.

(01:23:05):
With Miss Bardall winning forthe second straight here, and
Tahoe Miss coming in second.
Tahoe Miss now going by.
Here's Bardall, the winner ofthe race, Ronnie Muston waiting.
It was wild, and we will be backto recapitulate the unofficial

(01:23:30):
final points in just a moment.
Bill Cierzick talking on RadioKing.
This Gold Cup coverage beingbrought to you by Security
Civisco.

SPEAKER_04 (01:23:38):
Either a five percent regular account.

SPEAKER_02 (01:23:50):
She is the defending champion and has again won the
Gold Cup.
The average speed was in theneighborhood of 104 miles an
hour.
It will not be a no-race record.
We did not break any racerecords today, but we still saw
here in Detroit one of the mostincredible Gold Cups of all
time.
My name is Bill Kersik.
Uh this is a hobby with me,motor racing and announcing.

(01:24:13):
I love both of them.
And for me, this was certainlyone of the most exciting Gold
Cups ever.
I hope it was for you, ourlistening audience.
I would like to thank all thosewho worked so hard throughout
the week to make this broadcastpossible.
Bob Shaler from the phonecompany who handled
communications on the race, andwho incidentally did such a fine

(01:24:34):
job in getting KING accumulatedthere for any eventuality.

SPEAKER_01 (01:24:38):
On the Laotian border below North Vietnam,
government troops and theirAmerican advisors have set up a
tightness.

SPEAKER_12 (01:25:05):
Were you aware of the possibility that Tom will
miss half US and win?
Well, I uh possibility, but hegot started so far behind I
noticed that I didn't think hecould do it, but I heard it was
pretty close to it.
Actually, the margin was aboutfifteen feet, they said.
That's as good as a mile for me,then.
I know.
Uh here's only part of all theowner, only uh you're certainly

(01:25:26):
to be congratulated on uh havinga fine piece of equipment and a
great crew and a fine driver.
Uh only congratulations, Iagree.
I agree on that point.
I got a good career and a gooddriver, and uh pretty good ball.

SPEAKER_04 (01:25:39):
Uh I'm very happy to have three children of the
Stephen Chester family missingfor five hours from their home
near Redondo Beach.
See you again next year.

SPEAKER_00 (01:25:52):
Well, that's all the time we have for this week,
Uncle Heads.
And actually, this season, thisis the end of season seven.
I hope you enjoyed our run, hada lot of fun conversations with
many people from around thesport, and I'm looking forward
to coming back next year forseason eight.
I keep hitting these milestones,and I'm I can't believe I'm here
