My guest for this episode is Dr Angela Lim, serial health tech entrepreneur focused on innovative solutions, who has previously worked as a Paediatric doctor at Auckland Hospital and now runs Clearhead, NZ’s most innovative workplace wellbeing provider for EAP services and more.

Angela has a wide range of experiences and networks in both the NZ and international health care systems. This includes sitting on several local and national boards, especially in the area of healthcare information technology, conducting multiple health-related research projects spanning from a biomedical to population health level, and working for the Ministry of Health. This has allowed Angela to help shape and develop a more integrated and consumer-centric health care system, to take a whole-of-system approach when answering big and strategic questions.

Her key areas of interest are in population health, inequality, healthcare governance, leadership, cross-sectoral integration, innovation and entrepreneurship.  She has been featured in various articles, reports and presentations including the NZ Herald, Stuff, TV and as a TEDx speaker.

I reached out to Angela to be a guest here because mental health is so important in the workplace or when looking for a role, and also because I was personally so inspired by her awesomeness.

In this episode we cover:

  • How becoming a boss has shifted Angela’s meaning of recruitment and career
  • Why you are only successful as the sum of your people and how businesses can support each individual
  • The importance of technology in supporting mental health
  • Acknowledging there is still stigma and real life consequences around mental health challenges
  • The lessons you should take from any failure and remembering why you are grinding
  • That women in leadership bring a level of empathy allowing people to bring their whole human self to work
  • Remember that at all levels it’s ok to make mistakes, share them, learn, and support each other, showing this vulnerability and giving this permission makes you all stronger
  • Why it's important to let go of control, especially as a woman
  • The importance of filling your cup regularly so you have reserves to support life and work challenges
