During the peak of the Tuberculosis pandemic, white nurses at Sea View Hospital in Staten Island, New York quit because they refused to care for Tuberculosis patients. As a result, the hospital recruited over 300 Black nurses throughout the country. As a result of their heroic act, these nurses were called the Black Angels.
