The Elite Sports andEntertainment Network proudly
presents Royally Quacked.
I'm co-host and Kings fan, garySpink, and my other co-host is
(00:55):
my son.
Tell him a little bit aboutyourself, cody, just in case
it's their first time.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Why do you sound like
the sloth from Zootopia at the
DMV?
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Well, because I sit
next to Quentin and he's a big
sloth fan and I guess it's kindof rolled down to me.
Yeah, he actually has a littleglass sloth on his desk.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
As long as you don't
start laughing like ha ha ha.
We already got a comment on theYouTube not YouTube, sorry
Instagram.
From King Huey he says let's goKings, yeah, woo.
From King Huey he says let's goKings, yeah, woo.
(01:48):
But everyone, yeah, welcome toepisode 77 of Royally Quacked.
I'm Cody.
I'm the diehard Ducks fan onthis pod and, like I said, I'm
excited to be going to a fewgames this upcoming year.
Already I already got two inthe works going to Awesome, I'm
(02:09):
excited, can't wait.
Well, this wasn't a desire, butI'm excited about this podcast
because the main topic we'retalking about is someone that
actually uh, not a listener, butsomeone that we met at a church
and he gave us this idea and Iloved it when he said it, when
(02:32):
he brought this uh topic up Idon't recall who who brought the
topic?
he was the operations guy atyour church.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
OJ yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yeah, oh.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, because when I
was, when I first brought up,
having the church do the podcast, so I you know, that way it's
like everyone can listen to it.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Yeah, and it's worked
well.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Mm-hmm, it has I
listen every week.
I like it.
It's worked well.
It has I listen every week Ilike it.
But you want to get into someteam news?
Sure, all right.
So we're still, you know, in theslow part of the season, but I
think the next few weeks it'sgoing to get a lot busier.
I know I got quite a bit ofstuff on mine, but three of the
(03:26):
things have to do with oneplayer from three different
sources, and then after thatit's just little by little.
You know news here.
So I'll start off with uh perElliot Freeman on the and this
is what he said on the 32Thoughts podcast on Mason
McTavish.
He said the Ducks like theplayer and believe in him, but
(03:50):
the GM and the agent are bothgrinders.
Verbeek isn't afraid to let thislinger.
Friedman said he'd be verysurprised if McTavish doesn't
stay in Anaheim.
The issue is simply cap related.
No matter what length in yearsthey look at both Verbeek and
(04:12):
McTavish's agent, pat Morrisoncan't come to terms on the AAV.
So that was from ElliottFreeman, from Eric Stevens from
the Athletic.
He says the holdup in the Macymctavish contract negotiations
is the fact, uh, the ducks wantto sign him to a long-term deal,
(04:33):
not a bridge deal.
He clarifies that mctavish willnot be getting traded.
That's eric stevens, from theathletic, and here's david uh,
david pagnotta on mctavish.
It seems to be hesitancy on theplayer's side, just on the
uncertainty of what his role is.
(04:54):
His name has been out there, they've had talks with other
teams and so two of the peoplesaying he's probably not going
anywhere and there's one it saysthat they're talking to other
teams and I can tell you this Itrust friedman more than pagnota
(05:15):
and eric stevens.
He works with the ducks well, ducks, kingsarks.
So I would trust him a littlebit more than David Pagnotta.
Hey, frankie.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
What's happened to
the Yankees Frankie?
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Wow, frankie, I see
how it is.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
I missed you too,
frankie man.
It's been a tough baseball yearfor all of us right now.
I mean, you guys started offwith a bang, but our poor angels
are just.
You talk about sloths.
They're the sloths of baseball.
They're more like bottomfeeders, I mean started
(06:00):
listening to the game and it waslike 7-2 and next thing I know
it was 20-2 or 20-3 or somethinglike that.
I go oh my God.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
He says be coming
back, pops Watch.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Well, they need to.
They got a good team.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
I haven't watched any
really Angels games this year.
The only ones I've watched, Ithink we were against the
dodgers this last time and Istill couldn't talk crap to any
of my dodger friends because, okay, yeah, we swept them,
whoop-dee-doo, but we still suck.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
We're still not in
the playoffs so you got to turn
that around and go hey, we maynot be great, but we kicked the
Dodgers butt this whole year, even into a couple games.
Last year I think we won eightin a row Was it.
So go, Angels go.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
So let's turn into
baseball talk with Anaheim Ducks
News.
Go ahead, sorry, that's allgood.
Per the NHL Players Association, beckett Seneca will represent
the Anaheim Ducks at the 2025NHL PEA Rookie Showcase on
(07:21):
September 3rd in Arlington,virginia.
So that's good to see that.
I watched a.
I watched a ducks game recently.
It was on Disney plus.
Are you talking about, like, the mighty ducks movies?
Is that the ducks game you'rewatching?
That's the one thing I canthink of was those Anaheim ducks
(07:42):
movies, and then angels.
Of course, the captain of chaosis back in the chat.
That's the only thing I couldthink of was those Anaheim Ducks
movies and then Angels bleh, ofcourse the captain of chaos is
back in the chat.
Hey, adam, oh, yeah, see, I wasright.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Oh, those are
classics though.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
And Mom comes in, go
Angels and take the wins we can
get.
That is true.
All right, the NM Ducks willhave five games exclusive to the
national broadcast games.
They'll have four TNT games andone ESPN Plus game.
And here are the dates and theopponent and what channel you
(08:23):
can watch it on On November 11thso 11-11, they'll be at
Colorado and that will be on TNT.
On December 3rd they'll be homeagainst the Utah Mammoth.
That one will also be on TNT.
And then January 13th, homeagainst the Dallas Stars.
That one will also be on TNT.
(08:44):
January 13th, home against theDallas Stars, that one will also
be on TNT.
And then they got back-to-backgames pretty much.
On February 1st they'll be homeagainst the Golden Knights and
that one will be ESPN.
And then they have another homegame against the Seattle Kraken
on February 3rd and that onewill also be on TNT.
So five national televisedgames.
(09:07):
So that's good to know.
And then we got another jerseynumber for the season.
Nikita Nestorenko will go fromnumber 62 to number 13 this year
.
So glad to hear that.
And then the anaheim ducks wasranked per the athletic with the
(09:29):
fourth best pipeline in thenational hockey league, and
here's the top 15 prospects theyhave on this.
On that for the team, numberone, leo carlson, number two,
mason mTavish, number three, beckett Seneca, four Roger
McQueen, five Cutter Godier, sixDane Solberg, seven Pavel
(09:53):
Minchikov, eight Olin Zellweger, nine Tristan Lunau, ten Lucas
Pettersson, eleven Eric Nielsen, twelve Ethan Precision, 13,
herman Traff, 14, nathanGauthier and number 15, drew
Schock.
So that was the top 15 theyhave.
(10:14):
But this is also the playersthey have outside the top 15.
They have Lassie Buelis, thedefenseman, who we drafted 60th
overall in this last year'sdraft.
Austin Brnovich, the rightwinger.
We drafted him in 24.
He was 182 overall.
(10:34):
Damian, clara Roderwin, dionisio Tyson Hines, Elijah
Neuenschwander, taron Smith, igor Sidorov and Sasha Poshashov
.
We still have all those playersin the pipeline, so it's
looking good for the Ducks, forthe future.
So a lot of players we caneither use or use as trade
(10:58):
pieces so exciting.
And then you want to go on toKings News and then after that,
after your Kings News, we'regoing to do a little bit of NHL
game player ratings.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Okay, so the national
broadcast games for the Kings
are more than five.
Obviously, we got four just inOctober.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Show it off.
Why don't you?
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Well, it brought to
light.
I forgot to include this so Ipulled it up.
On October 7th, opening nightat home against the Colorado
Avalanche will be on ESPN.
Then the very next night atVegas they'll be on TNT.
(11:55):
That's October 8th.
Then on the 23rd the Kings willbe at Dallas.
That'll be on ESPN and Hulu orESPN Plus and Hulu.
And then the 28th they'll be atthe San Jose Sharks.
That'll be also on ESPN.
Then in November, on November6th, the Stanley Cup champion,
(12:21):
florida Panthers, will be at theKings.
That will be on ESPN Plus andHulu.
Then on November 20th, againthe Kings at the San Jose Sharks
ESPN Plus and Hulu.
Then in December, on the 4th,the Bedards are visiting the
(12:42):
Kings.
On the 4th That'll be on ESPNPlus and Hulu.
And then on the 10th the Kingsagainst the Seattle Kraken will
be on TNT.
And wouldn't it be a kick ifCharles Barkley was on TNT
hockey.
Just thought that you know allthese TNT things popping out of
(13:03):
I mean Barkley's.
Just he cracks me up.
The only good thing aboutbasketball is him and Shaq on
TNT right now, for me at least.
Going into next year, on the14th of January we'll have the
Vegas Golden Knights visitingthe Kings That'll also be on TNT
.
Visiting the Kings That'll alsobe on TNT.
(13:24):
Then in February, back-to-backnights on the 25th, vegas, again
against the Kings on TNT, andthen the 26th, edmonton at the
Kings, will be on ESPN Goinginto March.
(13:45):
On the 5th we'll have theIslanders visiting the Kings
We'll also be on ESPN.
And then on April 1st, st Louisat the Kings on TNT.
April Fool's no, it's actuallygoing to happen, it's not an
April Fool's joke.
Then on the 13th of April, thelast one that Kings will be
visiting the Kraken.
That will also be on ESPN.
Going on to another news, gulfStorm announced that Jake Brown,
(14:11):
son of former Stormer andtwo-time Stanley Cup champion
Dustin Brown, wears number 32 ina preseason game.
So the legacy continues andmaybe that'll be a future draft
pick for the Kings.
And then what everybody'swondering?
(14:33):
There's two big things thatactually everybody's wondering
about the Kings.
What is this Kopitar's lastseason?
Well, this is him, anze Kopitar, about his retirement.
Not everything is quite decidedyet, but this could be my last
(14:54):
season in the NHL.
Yes, does that yes mean that ishis last?
Is he trying to play a gamewith us here and see if we catch
on to that.
And the other big news is sortof like the big thing in
California for hockey is signing.
(15:15):
You got McTaffish for the Kings, I mean for the Ducks, and then
you got Kemper, kempe, kempe,I'm sorry, kemper signed.
Yeah, he signed for what?
Two more years, right, three?
(15:35):
I do believe I said three.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Three more years.
Well, he played one.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
I thought he had
three seasons when they had
picked him up.
But Adrian Kempe still not anykind of news.
What I did hear yesterday on 32Thoughts when I was listening
to it, was he wants 10 mil andHolland is not willing to go to
(16:04):
the 10 mil yet.
I think they've got termalready situated with that
because there was not aconversation about that.
But I think Elliot says theywere at eight and a half to nine
and nine million million and Igo to me uh, you gotta sign him
(16:34):
10 million.
I mean with a new uh cap andeverything going up.
10 millions.
The eight or seven million ayear or two ago.
I mean you saw that.
Well, I think marner signed foronly 12 mil.
He could have got 14 milanywhere else he wanted to go,
but maybe he just wanted to playin Vegas.
But I think we should signKempe and it should be soon.
Let's not go into the seasonwith any doubt that he's going
(16:58):
to be a lifetime king.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
So and that's Kings
news- by the way, you're right,
kemper does have two more yearsleft on his contract.
Okay, so he is having for the25, 26 and 26 27 season.
Okay, that's.
And then adam also put withthat list of prospects how the
(17:22):
Ducks only ranked fourth, Ithink, with the Sharks and
Chicago, and who was the otherone that's drafted pretty high
up.
I know Utah has a pretty goodprospect pool because they've
(17:43):
had a bajillion picks the last10 years.
I think Montreal has a decentprospect pool.
Somebody else but?
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Well, and then again,
this is one person's opinion, I
mean.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
I don't always take
too much stock in one person's
opinion.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
I mean, I don't
always take too much stock in
one person's opinion, because ifyou watch somebody or look and
see anything about anybody elsedoing it, there's always
differences, always differences.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
So All right.
So now we're going to do aquick NHL 26 game, the cover and
everything we already talkedabout.
The cover it's going to beMatthew Kachuk and if you get
the deluxe version, you getKeith Kachuk and Brady Kachuk on
the thing.
But they came out with all theplayer ratings.
You want to know who are thetop 10 for your LA Kings Dad.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Top 10 and player
ratings Sure On your team.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
You want to guess
who's number one?
Speaker 1 (18:52):
I would say it would
either be Adrian Kempe or C
Kemper.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Well, technically you
have three players tied for
number one.
Kempe, kopitar and Dowdy areall 88 overall in the game.
Darcy Kemper is 87.
Fiala is number 87.
Philip Deneau is 86.
And Quinton Byfield is also 86.
(19:22):
Interesting, grant Clark is an85.
Mikefield is also 86.
Interesting, grant Clark is an85, mike Anderson's an 85, and
Warren Fogle is an 84.
And, as Adam said, the NHL 26ratings are a joke and I
completely agree.
So here are the Ducks' topplayers and tell me if you agree
(19:44):
with this, okay mikhailgrandlin 87 overall, is the
number one ranked for the ducks.
Jacob truba number 286 overall.
Troy terry 86 overall.
He's number three.
Jackson lacombe 85 overall.
He's four.
Luk Lukasz Dostal, number five85 overall.
(20:07):
Mctavish 85 overall.
Chris Kreider 84 overall.
Cutter Goatee 84 overall.
Leo Carlson 84 overall.
And Gudis 84 overall yeah, joke.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Well, I could see why
they had Granlin.
He had a pretty good year lastyear.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
I was looking at the
Granlin, but I mean Carlson
should be higher, cutter shouldbe a little bit higher,
dahlstahl should be higher.
I mean Dolstall was carryingthis team on his back last
season.
And then I want to see how manyplayers you can get in the top
(20:56):
10 overall.
Okay, Connor.
McDavid Number one.
He's 97 overall.
Leon Dreisaitl he is.
Conor mcdavid number one.
He's 97 overall.
Um leon dry sidle he is 86overall.
He's number three overall.
(21:16):
Leo and dostwal should be 90 orbetter.
I don't know about 90, but Iwould say like 87, 88 minimum.
Give them another year to provethemselves and if they do again
another year then yeah, theyshould be in the 90s.
Speaker 1 (21:28):
So if Kopitar and
Kempe are like 88, I can't say
could you really say Leo shouldbe higher than them right now?
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Oh, I'm saying Kempe
should probably be higher.
I think he should.
But I'm saying, oh, campaignshould probably be higher.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
I think he should be
like 89.90 yeah, but leo still
isn't in campaign's class yet.
Now he may this might be thatbreakout year.
Is that capability there?
Yes, absolutely that capabilitythere.
Yes, absolutely that capabilityis there.
But then again, mctavish, didn't he lead the team in
(22:15):
scoring?
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Yep, and he was only
85 overall.
Trouba was higher than him.
I'm sorry, trouba should not behigher than McTavish, perry
Carlson and Cutter.
No, he should not be higherthan McTavish, terry Carlson and
Cutter.
No he should not be higher thanany of them, I mean, and then,
yeah, I think you'll see adifference.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
If Dostal repeats his
performance of last year,
you'll see that rating go up waymore to next year.
He's only had that.
He only because you you do seepeople have one great season and
then fall off.
They get, they fall off.
(22:59):
I'm not saying it's gonna.
I can't see that happening tohim because I watch how he plays
the game.
I think he's real.
I think, dang, if they didn'tsign him they were stupid.
But then again, we just neverknow what's going to happen in
hockey or any other sport.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
I'm going to say this
now and this is another one of
my hot takes.
I'm going to say this now andthis is another one of my hot
takes I think this is the lastyear where people stopped being
unappreciated with the AnaheimDucks.
I think this is the year thatit's going to change, where
people are going to look at usnot being bottom feeders anymore
.
We're going to be pushing for aplayoff spot.
(23:42):
I'm not saying the D ducks aremaking the playoffs and winning,
but I feel like this is goingto be the year that changes that
dynamic of us being bottombeaters, where they're not going
to be like, oh, anaheim's alottery pick team again.
No, I think this is the yearwhere we we've changed that.
We're going to be better.
You know, we got the the right,we got the head coach, we got
(24:05):
the great assistant coaches.
I mean, yeah, we didn'tprobably sign all the players we
wanted to sign, but like I, I Ido believe in this team.
I, you know we have a numberone with dostal and carlson's
gonna become what he is, becauseyou know what he did last year
and I think, with the rightcoach, with Quenville and
(24:28):
Woodcroft, I think he can easilychange that dynamic.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
Well, you know I
listen to Locked On Kings.
I got to catch up.
I think I'm an episode or twobehind on Locked On Ducks
because you know we do a podcastabout these two teams.
So I try to get all theinformation I can.
And Eddie Garcia was talkingabout the forwards and he did
the centers in a previous oneand he had the Ducks forwards, I
(25:02):
think rated in the divisionFifth.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
Fourth or fifth I
mean wingers.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
And centers were not.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
I listened to the
center one, I think that the
Ducks center.
He had the Kraken over theDucks and I don't agree with
that.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Well, he didn't have
the kraken over the ducks with
the wingers, I know that.
But the centers, I mean but butwhen he was talking about the,
the ducks, I mean he talkedbecause he had granlin on the
third line and I mean he wasprobably one of the biggest
scoring third liners in thewhole Pacific Division.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
I mean because you
also have Warren Fogle there.
I mean both of those guys were,I mean, and he had them very
highly ranked.
I think you're going to see adifference this year.
The Ducks are going to be waymore competitive.
I mean.
I think they're on the cusp ofbecoming a playoff team.
(26:13):
If they don't make it thisseason, they could I mean I
would almost think they might bea lock for a wild card,
depending on, I mean, thecentral is so tough.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
That's why I said
bubble team like yeah, I think
bubble I think, we're gonna belike I've, we're gonna, probably
we're gonna be in the playoffrace.
You know we'll probably be,like I'm guessing, within four
or five points of a playoff, awildcard spot.
But I completely agree withwhat you just said, dad.
(26:49):
With the whole central, I meanyou got Winnipeg, who are the
reigning President Trophywinners.
You got Colorado, who haveMcKinnon and McCarr on their
team.
You have Dallas, who you knowRobinsoninson hiskin and harley
(27:10):
dushane.
You know ottinger, that youknow they're going to be up
there again, not nashville.
You never know.
With nashville they can turn iton any minute with that team
yeah, you don't know what, andyou forgot minnesota, no I was
getting there.
I was getting there, you gotta.
Let me finish.
You have Minnesota Wild With ahealthy Kaprizov.
I think that if Kaprizov washealthy all year, last year they
(27:31):
were going to be the numberthree team in the Central and I
think Colorado would have been awild card team.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
That's what.
Speaker 2 (27:38):
I would have thought
would have happened.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Yeah, he's the cog
that makes the whole offense go.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
And then you got St
Louis with Jim Montgomery.
He changed things around there.
You got Kyrou there, you gotThomas there, Binnington you
know when he's on, he's on.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Totally agree, but we
were talking about the top 10.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
I know we got way off
.
I know we got way off topic,it's okay.
Speaker 1 (28:04):
I got to tell you
when you go off topic, sometimes
those are the.
I mean, I don't know about you.
I was having a pretty good timewith the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
I was too Great
discussion, though I will say
that I totally agree.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
I totally agree.
It was a great discussion yougot McDavid right and Dreisaitl
right.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
They're number one
and number three McKinnon he's
number two 96 overall.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
Matthews.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Matthews is number
12th overall.
Really yeah, he's a 94.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
94,.
Okay, let me think here QuinnHughes.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
Number 5, number 95
overall.
I saw this earlier with Adam.
We're going to be hated, nomatter what, because we're West
Coast biased.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Yeah, well, somebody
has to be Adam.
No, because the East Coastdoesn't pay any attention to us.
That's why we need to come in,and somebody's got to win the
cup in California again, andsoon, yep.
(29:21):
I've got to tell you all threeteams, I I mean, I know the
kings are the probably theclosest there right now, but
with the talent that the ducksand the sharks have up and
coming, whoa scary okay, realquick.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
I know we're getting
off topic again, but I want to
ask this question Okay, in thenext 10 years, out of the three
California teams?
No-transcript yeah, okay, adamum, why we're laughing is
(30:09):
because adam put ducks cup 26,27.
20 years later we win the cupagain.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
That was funny I you
know, beans that I probably know
more about the Ducks than SanJose.
If they hit on all theseprospects they could be the team
in 10 years I know.
Right now I think the only teamthat possibly could do it is
(30:38):
the Kings.
I don't think San Jose andanaheim are there yet.
Maybe in the next year or two, depending on what happens with
kopitar and whatever else movesthey may make.
Um, but over a 10-year period.
If I had to bet, I would haveto put money on the ducks.
(30:59):
I would have to put money onthe ducks.
I think the Kings have it in thenext couple of years, maybe two
, three years, and I think theducks in two, three years.
There, if all those guys hitand they continue to play and
they don't trade them like theydid, Zegers they're, they're
(31:19):
going to be scary.
But you know, jose looks scarycelebrini and ecklund and now
they got what was.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
It will smith they
got sam dickinson, they got
michael misa this is my honestopinion.
If I was just going to ask you, within the next two to three
years, I would say kings, ducks, sharks, but within the next 10,
if we years, I would say Kings, ducks, sharks, but within the
next 10, if we're talking about10 years overall, I'm probably
(31:52):
going Ducks, sharks, kings, justbecause I think the Ducks and
Sharks future is a lot morebrighter than the Kings future
within the next 10 years.
Yeah, I mean, I could the next10 years.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
Yeah, I mean I could
see that for now.
Yeah, but for now I mean youcould have, like, you got Seneca
and we have Green Tree.
What we don't know, are thoseguys going to put what they put
into juniors and come in and bepossibly superstar NHLers?
(32:23):
Sometimes they are andsometimes they're not.
So I mean if, if Kopi retiredand say, green Tree all of a
sudden found it, you know nowyou got him and Byfield on the
number one line with Fiala.
You know another trip, say atriple crown line for a few
years.
You just never know what'sgoing to happen.
(32:44):
But then again, I said, withthe amount of prospects that
both the ducks and the sharkshave, that are high quality,
they're going to be scary in thenext three to five years.
So, and I think I actually dodo believe the Ducks, if
everything hits they could be aplayoff team this year and be a
(33:06):
total surprise.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
Everything has to hit
for us this year for that to
happen.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
You know, but that's
an if and a but and we just
don't know what's going tohappen.
And then you get surprises.
Yeah, I mean, I never thoughtin 2012 the Kings would win the
Stanley Cup that year.
To be honest, I don't knowanybody.
If somebody would have putmoney on it Just in January of
(33:33):
that year that the Stanley CupWould be won the Kings, if they
would have bet it would havebeen probably a thousand to one
odds.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
I can tell you this,
If I look back at it.
So I graduated high school in11.
If I had to put money on whowas going to win the most
Stanley Cups between the Ducksand the Kings, without looking
at.
I was going to say the Ducks.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
I agree with you.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
I would agree with
you, Just because I thought they
had more stars on their team.
They were the powerhouse aroundthat time and we just couldn't
finish in the playoffs.
And the Kings did.
The Kings were the hottest teamgoing in in 2012.
And you had Quick just beingunbelievable probably one of the
(34:25):
best playoff performances by agoalie ever in the playoffs.
I got my Quickie jersey on too, your Quickie jersey, yeah, you
know.
And then in 14, just you know, everything went right for you
guys.
Of course Marion Gabrick was aduck killer.
That year went right for youguys.
Of course Marion Gabrick was aduck killer that year.
And you guys made the rightpickups during those two years,
(34:47):
Like in 2012,.
You guys got Jeff Carter thatswitched things around 2014,.
You guys got Marion Gabrickthat turned things around.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
See, those are the
things we don't know, but
prospect-wise duck fans shouldbe excited about that.
So I mean I know you are Cody,I know Adam is.
I mean you guys are big Duckfans and you have every reason
(35:16):
to be excited about what thefuture holds.
Yeah.
So All right.
Let's get back to topic Back totop 10.
So I got one, two three.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
You got one, two,
three, five and 12.
Marner Marner is when is MarnerMarner is when is Marner?
Number 26 overall.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
Really.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
I think that's too
low for him.
I mean, you're forgetting somebig players.
Sidney Crosby he is numbereight overall.
Number 94 is his rating.
Kaprizov he is number 13, 894overall.
(36:09):
You're missing a guy that'susually in the Hart Trophy
winner, a guy that's won twoNorrises already and a guy
that's won almost every Selkiesince he's been in the league
pretty much and he's capped inback-to-back championships
Barkoff Barkoff number seven.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Heart trophy.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
He's in the heart
trophies.
He's a finalist almost everyyear.
He's in the Hart Trophies.
He's a finalist almost everyyear.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
You picked him on
your all-star team last week.
Right winger.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Pasternak.
That's not what I was goingwith, but he is a right winger.
He's number nine overall.
Let's just say he's alwaysrushing.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
Kucherov, he's always
rushing around.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Yes, kucherov, he's
number four, I got it.
He hasn't even gotten numbersix yet Probably the number one
defenseman in the whole league.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Number one defenseman
in the whole league, slavin.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
No number one
defenseman, overall Not
defensive slavin no no numberone defenseman overall, not
defensive defense.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Oh, mccarr mccarr,
he's number six I, I, I had
thought I said him already no,you said hughes, yeah.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
And then I'll just
give you number 10, because I
don't want to be here all day.
Um, it's connor hell.
Yeah, well, that makes sense.
And then you got Eichel at 11,matthews at 12, kaprizov at 13,
rantanen at 14, matthew Kachukat 15, reinhardt at 16, vaz
Valesky at 17, jack Hughes at 18, rowenski at 19, and Roman
(38:00):
Yossi is number 20 overall.
So that's the top 20 accordingto NHL rankings.
Jack Hughes at 18, rowenski at19, and Roman Yossi is number 20
overall.
So that's the top 20 accordingto NHL rankings.
Okay, which I don't agree withall of it, but we can move on.
I am excited for the game, though, to come out.
So let's go on to other leaguenews.
I know we don't have much.
(38:25):
I don't think we had anyextensions no signings, no
trades.
We do have one retirement TysonBerry is retiring from
professional hockey.
He confirmed with NathanRudolph of 2009.
Oh, okay, no, that did not comeout right With the Denver
sports.
The 39-year-old was a 2009 pick, third pick, third round pick,
(38:51):
number 64 overall.
He had 508 points in 822 gamesfrom 2011 to 2025.
He played with Colorado,Toronto, edmonton, nashville and
Calgary.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
Nice.
He's a good player.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
You want to do the
next one?
Speaker 1 (39:18):
Oh, the city of.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
San Jose.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
Mm-hmm.
Next one.
Oh, the city of San Jose,Mm-hmm.
The city of San Jose and SharkSports and Entertainment Group
have reached a new agreementthat keeps the San Jose Sharks
in town through 2051.
I didn't know they were leaving.
You know those whole leasedeals and everything.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
They can change a lot
of things lease deals and
everything.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
They can change a lot
of things.
As part of the deal, the teamwill undergo a $425 million
renovation of their currentarena over the next seven
off-seasons, With the Sharkscontributing $100 million,
including $25 million towardscity debt service and the city
covering the remaining $325million.
(40:02):
The Sharks will be responsiblefor any cost overruns.
Conceptual renders of a futurearena were shared by Max Miller
through the Sharks presidentJonathan Becker clarified that
they are not yet approved.
Both sides also agreed to beginplanning for a new arena to be
(40:23):
built in 2051, by 2051.
Wow.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
Yeah, big things, big
things for them.
It looks like all theCalifornia teams are doing
renovations for their arena.
I would say the duck the ducksones that were.
I mean, I've never been to thesap center so I wouldn't know.
But I know honda center neededrenovations.
(40:49):
Hopefully we get escalatorsinstead of stairs to.
That'd be nice.
I will admit that's what I do.
Like about the state staplecenter is they got the
escalators.
That's nice, true, you know.
So hopefully the hunter centertakes care of that.
Um, and honestly I wouldn't mindtrying to get one of these
things because this would befunny.
(41:10):
Um, the sharks reveal acelebrini, will smith and tyler
toffoli sleepover bobblehead set.
Yes, this last season tylertoff fully had to do a sleepover
with celebrini and will smith.
And here's the text that tylerto fully said to his wife when
(41:30):
he had to tell him tell her thenews.
He says he's texted tyler tofully text his wife this I gotta
have a sleepover with Will andMac tonight.
Lol.
She said what he says Will saidon the bus last night if all
three of us score, I have to dosleepover with them.
Where, in their hotel room.
(41:51):
They're in the same room.
That's what the wife replied,which I all.
This is hilarious.
I love that story.
I think it's hilarious thatToffoli is just being like the,
the, the cool dad with them, pretty much.
Speaker 1 (42:11):
I I can remember when
he was on the 70s line oh, adam
, I am down.
Speaker 2 (42:19):
He says he wants that
bobblehead road trip to San
Jose.
I've never been to the San Josearena, so I'd be down for that.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
That's a goal for us,
to San Jose, vegas, vegas and
even possibly Utah in the future.
Yeah, we talked about doing.
You know, maybe it'd just be aguy thing.
I don't know.
If mom's listening, maybe she'dbe interested in going, because
it would be fun.
Speaker 2 (42:47):
Yeah, so I'd be
definitely down for that.
I've already been to Seattle.
I've been to LA, anaheim Ithought there was another one
I've been to.
I swear I've been to anotherarena, but I will be knocking
(43:08):
off another one soon.
Mom says yes.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Okay, so it would be
a family event.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
Family event.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
A road trip.
We'll do a road trip um let'ssee.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Adam says ducks
versus vegas.
Veterans day weekend, I'll bethere for a veterans tournament.
Is that in that's in vegas?
Speaker 1 (43:35):
I'd be down for that
oh, I, I, I would, I would be
down to that too.
That would be fun.
Mom says someone has to keepyou boys in line.
Yeah, hey, it's those RurallyQuack guys, remember what they
did last time they were here.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
Oh, he says yes, it's
in Vegas.
Ooh, I'd be down for that.
And that's what?
October?
When is Veterans Weekend?
I don't know.
Veterans Weekend is not October, no, it's November 11th.
(44:17):
Oh, that's one of the.
Is it on a Tuesday?
It is on a Tuesday, that'sweird.
Yeah, november.
Let's continue with the leaguenews.
According to the Athletics, michael Russo, michael Backlund
is not expecting Rasmus Andersento suit up alongside him, his
(44:40):
fellow countrymen in Calgarythis season, and he put yeah,
he's getting traded.
It's obvious, backlund said atthe NHL player media tour in
Europe.
But the team wants value, hewants a big contract, so he
wants to play well.
The team needs him to play well, so just go out and play.
(45:00):
I talked to him, him too.
He doesn't want to bedistraction, so it's all good,
it's too bad, it's too bad.
It's come to this.
I don't think that they'llclose uh, they're, they'll close
on getting an agreement oranything.
But you never know, this couldchange.
We'll see.
And that's Michael Backlund onthe Rasmus Anderson trade talks.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
Yeah, he declined to
come to the Kings, from what I
understand.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Oh, he wants to go to
Vegas and Vegas.
Speaker 1 (45:38):
Everybody wants to go
to Vegas.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
I don't want to go to
Vegas, I want to go to Vegas.
I mean, I don't want to go toVegas, I want to go to Vegas,
but not for that reason.
But all right, now for the mainevent of this podcast.
Wow, 45 minutes for us to getthrough all that little news.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
Well, we got a little
off topic, but it was fun.
Speaker 2 (46:05):
This is what Adam
said.
Veterans Tournament November7th through the 10th Ducks-Vegas
game on November 8th.
Speaker 1 (46:12):
Is that a weekend?
It's a weekend.
Yep, I want to go.
We should get tickets.
I want to go.
Okay, I'm to go.
Okay, I'm down, all right, andAdam, let us know when you're
playing.
So, if we can make that workout, we'd love to watch you play
(46:33):
too.
Yeah.
I don't know if I can get thetime off, because that's too
short a notice.
Okay.
I'll try.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
I'll try to figure
out how I can switch to All
right Now, the history of theenforcer.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
Now, like I said,
you're Well, let's do a
definition before we do anythingelse, okay, okay, okay.
So I'm going to read a littlebit of a couple different
definitions.
Okay, in hockey, a goon is aterm used to describe a player
(47:13):
whose primary role is tophysically intimidate opponents
opponents, often throughaggressive and rough play.
Goons are typically known fortheir fighting skills and are
sent onto the ice to protecttheir teammates and create a
physical presence on the team.
That's one.
Enforcer is a role in ice hockey.
(47:33):
The term is sometimes usedsynonymously with fighter, tough
guy or goon.
An enforcer's job is to deterand respond to dirty or violent
play by the opposition.
When such play occurs, theenforcer is expected to respond
(47:54):
aggressively by fighting orchecking the offender.
Enforcers are expected to reactparticularly harshly to
violence against their starplayers or goalies.
And here's another part of it.
It's a different definition ofit.
Enforcers are different frompests.
(48:16):
So enforcer would be MartyMcSorley or Stu Grimson, a pest
best one I know Corey Perry, matthew Kachuk, probably even
Brady Kachuk.
Those guys are more pests thanenforcers.
Just so for you guys wonderingwhat the difference is.
(48:38):
You guys wondering what thedifference is because the pest
they seek to agitate theiropponents, distract them from
the game without necessarilyfighting them.
The pest's primary role is todraw penalties from opposing
players, thus getting them offtheir game, while not actually
intending to fight theopposition player, although
(48:59):
exceptions to this do occur.
Pests and enforcers often playtogether on the same line,
usually the fourth line.
Another related role is thegrinder, known for hard work and
checking rather than scoring.
Speaker 2 (49:20):
I think he's a pest.
No, he's more of a grinder thana pest.
I think he's a pest.
No, he's more of a grinder,he's a pest.
Marshan's a pest, kachuk's agrinder.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
Well, yeah, marshan,
he's a rat, he is a pest.
So now we have the definitiondown.
Continue, cody.
Speaker 2 (49:39):
Alright, so this is
what I'm going to read.
What I have is what I'm gonnaread.
What I have first, then you canread what you have.
And then adam who thinks he I'mpretty sure what he's gonna
have is probably better thanwhat we both have.
I'll read his last, just incase of what we didn't find was
right.
Speaker 1 (49:55):
So if you're feeling
better, if you're feeling better
at it, you can still come in.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
All right, enforcer.
The enforcer is sometimescalled a goon, fighter or tough
guy.
It is one of the most iconicand controversial figures in
hockey, lore Born out ofnecessity and nurtured by the
culture of the physicalintimidation oh, my nose is
(50:22):
acting up.
The enforcer's job was simpleProtect teammates, especially
star players and goalies, by anymeans necessary.
That usually means fist.
Yeah, he says.
His voice is still shot.
In the early days of the NHL,physical play was was part of
the game, but it wasn't untilthe 1970s that the enforcer role
(50:46):
truly crystallized.
Teams like the boston bruinsand the philadelphia flyers
leaned into brute force, earningnicknames like the big bad
bruins and the broad streetbullies.
These squads stacked theirrosters with grinders and
enforcers players who weren'tthere to score but to send a
message.
If you messed with Bobby Orr orBernie Parent, you'd answer to
(51:09):
Terry O'Reilly or Dave Schultz.
By the 1980s and 90s, theenforcer was a staple on every
NHL roster.
They usually played wing on thefourth line, logging minimal
ice time but maximum impact.
Their presence alone coulddeter cheap shots and dirty
plays.
(51:30):
Some, like Rob Prober and TigerWilliams, became cult heroes,
not just their fists, but forflashes of scoring ability.
Williams even made the All-Stargame, proving that toughness
didn't always mean a lack oftalent.
But the enforcer wasn't just afighter.
He was a guardian, aworking-class superhero, as
(51:54):
journalist John Branch oncewrote.
Someone who might not have madethe NHL on skill alone, but
earned his spot through toughgrit, loyalty and fearlessness.
Players like Clark Gilliesdidn't need to drop the gloves
every night.
Their reputation did thetalking, and legends like Gordie
Howe and Jerome Aguinla blurredthe lines, serving as their own
(52:16):
enforcers while racking upgoals and assists.
That's half of what I have.
And then this is what's goingto talk about the shift.
After the 0405 lockout, the nhlchanged its rules to speed up
the game and boost scoring.
(52:38):
Clutching, grabbing werepenalized more strictly and the
league began to favor speed andskill over brute strength.
Suddenly, one-dimensionalfighters became liabilities.
Teams couldn't afford to carryplayers who couldn't skate,
score or defend.
The enforcers' ice time shrank, their contracts dried up and
(52:58):
their numbers dwindled.
By the 2010s, fighting was onthe decline.
In the late 80s, there wereover 1.3 fights per game.
By 2012, the number had droppedto 0.5.
Major penalties for fightingfell by 25% in just one season.
The roll was gone, but nothingwas fading.
(53:19):
Then came the reckoning In thesummer of 2011, three NHL
forcers died tragically DerekBogard from an accidental
overdose, Rick Ripon fromsuicide and Wade Black under
circumstances believed to besuicide.
A year later, rob Bropert haddied of a heart attack believed
(53:43):
to be suicide.
A year later, brobert had diedof a heart attack.
Uh, a test revealed brain damageand signs of uh chronic
traumatic uh.
Oh god, the cte, I can't saythat.
Last word uh a condition linkedto repeated head trauma.
It's like the one that uhfootball players are.
Uh get a lot, um so head trauma.
(54:03):
Suddenly, the cost of being anenforcer was laid bare.
The nhl faced scrutiny.
Former fighters like uh georgelacroix uh called for for better
mental health support.
Writers like roy mcgregorquestioned whether the rule
should exist at all.
Fans who once cheered forBrawls began to ask was it worth
(54:26):
it?
Today, the enforcer is a rarebreed.
Players like Tom Wilson andRyan Reeves still carry the
torch, but they're expected tocontribute in other areas
Forechecking, scoring, penaltykilling.
The modern NHL valuesversatility, intimidation still
exist, but it's uh woven into abroader skill set.
(54:49):
The enforcer hasn't disappeared.
He it's involved from fearedfighter to fan favorite, from
protector to cautionary tale.
The enforcer legacy iscomplicated but unforgettable.
He was the hockey's muscle, itsconscience and sometimes its
martyr.
And then here's what Adam alsosaid John Ferguson Jr pioneered
(55:14):
the role in the 1960s and becamea mainstay in the 70s.
So you want to go with what youhave now.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
Well, you had about
everything I had, so I did have
a list.
Now, I'm sure there's more thanone list and I'm sure, like we
talked about the Ducks onlybeing the fourth-ranked prospect
pool, you probably have thesame thing with this, but this
(55:44):
was a top 10 off.
Speaker 2 (55:47):
Do you want me to
read Adams first and then we can
do the top 10?
Let's do that, all right.
So this is what Adam has.
Enforcer definition a person ora group that compels observance
of or compliance with a law.
What does that mean to thispodcast?
Well, let this hockey fan tellyou.
(56:09):
Remember, this is from Adam.
The enforcer is an outdated butmissing role that has been
driven out of the game.
In the game today, they haveinvolved into fighters.
The enforcer was the muscle onthe ice and was feared by almost
every other player.
The NHL was a different game.
Throughout the 1970s throughthe early 2000s.
(56:33):
For over three decades, theenforcer was the purest form of
justice in any sport, willing todrop the mitt myths in a
heartbeat to protect histeammates.
Ray Bork had Terry O'Reilly toprotect him.
In the late 70s and early 80s,wayne Gretzky had Marty McSorley
protecting him.
In the late 80s and 90s, paulCorrea had Stu Grimson.
(56:57):
In the late 90s, even TimuSolani had George Peros in the
2000s and early 2010s.
Since those days, the enforcerhas evolved, but the most part
has been taken away from thegame.
With the high-level talentblending the game to their will,
opposing teams will try toinjure them, which is why the
(57:20):
enforcer became a necessary evil.
Game-changing players neededsomeone to do their dirty work
so they could focus on the game.
Enforcers would be the ones todo the dirty work.
You would think twice abouttrying to take out a star player
when you knew someone biggerand meaner would come after you.
Most enforcers obviously hadthe skill to play in the NHL,
(57:44):
but damage control was theirmain focus.
As the game developed throughoutthe years, the enforcer evolved
as well.
The 70s had Terry O'Reilly, whowould go to such extremes as
jumping over the boards andfighting fans.
The 80s had Marty McSorley, whowould drop the gloves just
because you looked at WayneGretzky wrong.
The 90s was a bit moreinteresting because you had Ty
(58:07):
Domi, a 5'8 beast on the ice.
He took the Napoleon complex toa whole new level.
Little in comparison to thestandards of today's game, but a
mighty warrior who never backeddown.
Then in the 2000s, you hadeveryone who just would call a
straight thug.
(58:27):
Uh, donald brazier, a mountainof a man who's trained to fight
up by, by boxing.
Hall of fame, hall of famer, joe frazier.
He was more of a fighter thanon the ice than a hockey player.
With this brief history of theenforcer, here's what it meant
to the game.
The enforcer was there toshoulder the brutality of the
(58:49):
game, for superstars to shinebrighter than ever.
Gretzky was able to shine, toscore 50 goals in 39 games
because of having people likeMarty McSorley and Stu Grimson
to back him up.
Games because of having peoplelike Marty McSorley and Stu
Grimson to back him up.
Today's game has evolved intoopen ice exhibition where
players skate faster, haveflashy dekes and insane goals.
(59:15):
That would never have beenpossible 20 years ago.
But instead of having that onekey player on every team solely
for the purpose of enactingjustice, you have a new
generation of enforcers calledfighters.
Ryan Reeves, nick Delorier andthe NHL those are just a few
guys that are called upon toserve the on-ice justice, and
there are even players in theAHL, like Jacob Dowdy on the
(59:38):
Ontario Reign, that serve thatpurpose.
In today's game, enforcers areknown as the bad guys.
20 years ago they were heroesof the game.
I was once told this by a coachgrowing up about fighting in
the game.
Fighting is the purest form ofon-ice justice.
In any game, teams think twiceabout playing dirty when the
(59:59):
other team has a bigger, faster, stronger person willing to
punch you in the face becausethey can and for this podcast
purpose, george Peros is myall-time favorite Ducks enforcer
.
But for the short future, orshort stature and overall nasty
grit, ty Domi has to be myleague favorite.
(01:00:21):
And that was from Adam.
Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
That was very good.
Very good, Adam, by the way.
Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
Better than what I
had.
Yeah, and you know what's funnyabout what he said about teams
will think twice about playingdirty.
It really brought me back tohow you told me to play
goalkeeper in soccer in a way.
It really brought me back tohow you told me to play
goalkeeper in soccer in a way,Cause once you you lay that
elbow or that knee or you takehim out, they think twice before
(01:00:51):
they come into my penalty boxwith that 50, 50 ball again
every single time.
Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
And that that one guy
was just pestering you.
And I go you want to, you wantto, you want to end that?
I go.
When you're coming up for theball, you get that ball, put a
knee right in his chest, knockhim on his ass and he'll think
twice about coming in again.
And you did exactly that, and Idon't think he came back in
(01:01:20):
again, did he?
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
nope, I remember I
had one where I threw and I hit
a guy with an elbow to his noseand he complained and there was
another 50, 50 ball and he wouldhave beat me to the ball.
He was going to beat me butthen he saw me storming out and
he was like nope.
And he stopped and his coachyelled at him.
Because he just stopped.
And he just turned and lookedat his coach.
(01:01:43):
He's like I don't want to catchanother elbow again.
And I started laughing afterthat.
But Adam, that was perfect.
That was a lot better than whatI had.
Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
Here's a top ten.
One opinion it's not mine, notmine.
So he had number 10,.
Chris Simon I think that name'sbeen mentioned a couple
different times Played for eightdifferent teams.
He was a tough guy.
Dale Hunter Number nine he alsoplayed for what?
(01:02:26):
Quebec and Washington.
He was one of the firstenforcers for the Capitals, as a
matter of fact, and him and hisbrother are big in the AHL
right the Hunters.
Speaker 2 (01:02:44):
Oh, I think they own
the London Knights.
Speaker 1 (01:02:47):
That's what I was
thinking.
Speaker 3 (01:02:49):
We have two
defensemen that are going to be
playing for us the one that youjust drafted Pristevich,
Pristevich thank you, and thenWoollich thank you, and then
Woolley.
Speaker 1 (01:03:06):
I think it's.
Speaker 2 (01:03:07):
Woolley, yeah, sam
Dickinson was just there.
They just won the Memorial Cup.
Yeah, but I believe they ownthe London Knights.
Speaker 1 (01:03:19):
Yeah, and they're
doing a great job over there.
That's getting us.
Speaker 2 (01:03:22):
That's like the main,
like the New York Yankees of
the Canadian Juniors League.
Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
Yeah, so let's put it
that way.
So number eight was DaveSemenenko I think you mentioned
his name a little bit.
They had number seven, bobProbert.
They had number seven, bobProbert, and he was an enforcer,
but he was a pretty good playertoo.
(01:03:51):
One season, 398 penalty minutes.
I don't think we even comeclose to that now in today's
game.
Donald Brashear was, I know youmentioned, also a big bruiser.
Clark Gillies was number fiveand then one of Adam's favorites
, they had Ty Domi, number four, marty McSorley, obviously a
(01:04:20):
Wayne Gretzky guardian, andnumber three, terry O'Reilly,
number two, and Dave Schultz, and Dave Schultz nickname was
Hammer.
So, and that was for obviously alot of people you know my age,
yeah, and you may have heard ofthis too he, he was, uh, the, uh
(01:04:43):
, one of the enforcers for thebroad street bullies which were
the philadelphia flyers yeah soprotecting bobby clark, of
course, uh, one of the stars ofof the that flyer team, but
that's 10 and I I mean I knowthere's others that could be on
(01:05:04):
that list, from differentopinions, but the thing is is
the game was bob probe.
Speaker 2 (01:05:11):
Oh, there is.
Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
I'm sure stew grimson
wasn't one of them I think he
came in late, later than thereal tough guy years.
Yeah, you know, the guys likein the 2010 and on, you had some
tough guys but they weren'tdoing what the guys were in the
(01:05:36):
past, because the games becomemore talent rich, yeah.
So if you're going to be atough guy, you have to have some
talent.
Now, I mean, obviously you'veseen the goon movie.
I've seen about half of that.
Uh with uh, it's the guy fromAmerican pie, right?
Speaker 2 (01:05:53):
Yeah, stiffler.
Speaker 1 (01:05:54):
Uh, yeah, he.
Speaker 2 (01:05:56):
He actually played a
pretty good goons I I haven't
seen the whole movie yet he wasa nice goon too, but yeah,
that's a good way, like someonethat's willing to put everything
on the line for their team.
Speaker 1 (01:06:12):
But a lot of people
don't understand why it was
necessary.
And we hear a protection and itwas.
But If there wasn't fightingallowed in hockey, how would you
make a guy pay?
If they banned fighting, whatwould happen?
(01:06:34):
The stick play would go up andyou're talking about a lot more
possible serious injury withstick than with your fists,
about a lot more possibleserious injury with stick than
with your fists.
So a lot of reason.
A lot of people don't realizethat they've allowed fighting to
get that aggression out and tostop it without having to become
(01:06:56):
totally weaponized.
Yeah, I mean, if you thinkabout it.
I mean um, I mean, if you thinkabout it, I mean Juan Marichal
hitting Campanella from theDodgers with the bat in the head
.
Lucky he didn't kill him.
Would Scott Stevens beconsidered an enforcer?
(01:07:22):
I would think he would be moreof that grinder.
Speaker 2 (01:07:24):
Because he almost
killed Paul Curry in 2003.
Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
Yeah, well, you know,
there are some stiff hits that
happen, that cause injury, andthen people I mean obviously,
when you're slamming a guy intothe boards and they get that
major for boarding, I meanthat's, that's where Someone's
gonna pick a fight with that guy, maybe not in that game, but
the next time they play orthey're, they're gonna put them
(01:07:53):
in the boards and do the samething right back to them,
because it's to eventually stopinjury from happening and over
over physicality happening in inhockey.
And you know what, more morethan even the men, the women
(01:08:14):
love the fighting in hockey.
I mean, they're some of thebiggest fans I've seen.
Speaker 2 (01:08:19):
Well, trust me that's
the main, main thing why
Christina loves going to games.
Speaker 1 (01:08:23):
Well, she's not
unusual, yeah, you know.
And women, I think if they getinto hockey they become kind of
hooked on watching it.
I mean, you know, everybodyloves a little brawl and a
little excitement.
I mean, I definitely wanted tosee Phoenix Copley and John
(01:08:47):
Gibson go at it, that one gamewe were at.
Speaker 2 (01:08:50):
I wanted to see
Fleury and Bennington go at it
too, but no, that one I wantbecause we were live and I
really wanted to see that Adamput.
Most goons are or were verynice guys.
The documentary Ice Guardiansshows you the brutality and the
nice side of the enforcer rolemost guys in the 90s would fight
(01:09:11):
and then congratulate eachother now.
Um, I actually listened to stewgrimson's book and that was
actually a good like since Idrive it out, it's I was.
I listened more than I read itbut it was actually really good
because it kind of told you likehis side of everything that
happened, especially with, likeyou know, the expansion with the
(01:09:32):
, the ducks and everything.
Um, it was, it was a greatlisten and he, he told you like,
like, how he got into fightingand how everything happened with
his career and everything.
He talked about Bob Probert alot in that one.
So that was a great lesson andhe was saying all the guys were
good too.
He said Stevens was a bruiser.
(01:09:54):
He was like a pronger, a bigphysical player who could
destroy players with a hit moreskilled than Braun.
I can see that, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:10:09):
I had a thought and
it just went right out of my
head, but anyway, yeah, a lot ofthe guys they respected each
other even though they foughtduring the game.
Yeah, and it's competition.
You know a lot of of ourfriends off the ice.
So I mean, I I had just heard Idon't know what podcast it was
(01:10:36):
is that, uh, surprising?
Gavrikov and dowdy were prettygood buddies and oh, oh you're.
You said gavrikov and Dowdywere pretty good buddies oh.
Speaker 2 (01:10:46):
Oh, you said Gavrikov
.
And who Dowdy no?
It wasn't Gavrikov, was it.
Speaker 1 (01:10:56):
Yeah, no, it was
Gavrikov and Dowdy and they were
talking with each other andstuff.
Even though he's now a Ranger,I thought I heard it was a
different name before.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
Oh Perry.
Yeah, it was Perry and Dowdyyeah.
Speaker 1 (01:11:16):
I heard that also.
Yeah, they were friendly.
Off the ice, hard to believethe pest.
Speaker 2 (01:11:22):
Yeah, I recommend the
fans to go watch Ice Guardians
were friendly off the ice, hardto believe the pest.
Yeah, I recommend the fans togo watch Ice Guardians Shows a
whole different story or a wholedifferent side.
I'm down to watch that.
Of course, I still need towatch Mystery Alaska.
I still need to watchYoungbloods and I still haven't
finished Slapshot yet.
Yeah, see, youngbloods was thatold?
Speaker 1 (01:11:43):
school goon was the
bad guy in the movie.
Haven't finished Slapshot yet.
Yeah, see, youngbloods was that.
Old school goon was the bad guyin the movie.
Yeah, and that's a good movieMystery Alaska.
I love that.
I just love the story and howthat all happened.
It was very good.
I still haven't been able tobring myself To watch Timu's
(01:12:06):
movie Because Eddie said it washorrible.
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:12:12):
Adam, have you
watched the Minor leaguer movie
with Timu Solani?
I wanted to watch it, but afterwhat Eddie told me, I'm like
man, I don't know if I want towatch it now.
Yeah.
So, homie, I'm like man, like Idon't know if I want to watch
it now.
Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
Yeah, so, but uh,
anyways, the the tough guy, we
still have him in hockey andthey're tom wilson I would say
is probably the biggest one andhe's, he's, he's, he's a good
player too, so it's not likethat Goon movie, where that's
(01:12:48):
all he was good for.
Speaker 2 (01:12:50):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
So I mean that's how
the game has evolved.
Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
I can tell you this,
so I could tell you this.
The enforcer is they're notalways going to make it on the
stat sheet, but I guarantee youa lot of them are the fan
favorites.
Yeah, he said yeah, it's like aB rate slasher movie.
It's so bad, it's good.
(01:13:25):
Is it like that movie showgirls, where it's so bad?
Speaker 1 (01:13:32):
It's?
It's so bad it's good.
Is it like that movie showgirls, where it's so bad it's?
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
it's good have you
ever watched showgirls I.
I think it's a long time ago.
Speaker 1 (01:13:37):
Maybe it's the one
with you know, from uh saved by
the bell.
Yeah, Christina made me watchit.
Speaker 2 (01:13:44):
Elizabeth Berkley.
Yeah, it was so bad, it waswatchable, I guess, is the
better word for that one.
Speaker 1 (01:13:55):
I don't think I want
to watch it again.
Yeah, I'm good with it, butthen you know Mystery, that's,
that's a definite watch.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
uh, obviously miracle
, definitely, definitely miracle
is probably one of my favoritehockey movies other than the
mighty ducks.
But if we're just talking aboutlike documentary, kind of like
real life thing, I love themiracle movie.
I do, um, because I I liked how, uh oh, the r-rated part of
(01:14:29):
that movie was the only reasonto watch it uh, he must be
talking about the show girls.
Speaker 1 (01:14:35):
Okay, yeah I'm sure,
I'm sure that's not uh g-rated
for our podcast.
Speaker 2 (01:14:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:14:46):
But I think there was
a hockey movie called the
rookie too.
I mean, it's not the same one, like with Dennis Quaid, where
he's the pitcher, but it was a.
It was a good movie abouthockey.
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
Is it the Rookies?
I'm looking it up.
Speaker 1 (01:15:10):
Maybe I don't have
the name right, but I remember
there was a movie.
It's on the same line withYoungblood.
Speaker 2 (01:15:19):
No, it's right here
the Rookies.
Yeah, I see, I don't know who'sin it though.
Speaker 1 (01:15:27):
I remember seeing
that one.
Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
Oh, no, it's the
Rookies.
Yeah, I don't know any of theactors in it, okay.
Speaker 1 (01:15:36):
Adam says watch
Mystery Alaska.
It will become one of your topfive favorites.
Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
Do it today, cody I
won't do it today and because
here I will, I'll try to watchit this weekend especially it's
a three-day weekend um, justonly because we're going to
watch, because they're doinglike a 25th anniversary for the
harry potter movies.
It's like the anniversary andat the regal movies, like each
(01:16:05):
day they had a different harrypotter movie and we're going
tonight to watch the last movie.
So we still need to finishwatching episode six, because I
fell asleep watching it lastnight.
And then we're going to watchdeathly hallows, part one, and
then tonight we're watchingdeathly hallow, part 2.
And that movie starts at $9.40tonight and the reason why we're
(01:16:27):
going is because the ticketswere only $9.75.
Nine and three quarters Get it.
And then they have collectiblepopcorn buckets for each sorting
house and it comes with a sodacup and a popcorn like a book
(01:16:48):
looking thing and christinawants to get her slytherin.
Speaker 1 (01:16:52):
Uh, collectible okay,
more information than everybody
else needed, I think harrypotter, harry potter, potter on
TV every day.
Speaker 2 (01:17:04):
You can watch them
later.
Well, I mean, so is Mr Alaska.
It's on TV.
I could just pay for it andwatch it later.
Pay for it and watch it.
It's not free.
I already looked it up.
Speaker 1 (01:17:19):
I love you, cody, but
nerd alert I I am a proud nerd.
Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
Okay, I am a proud
nerd.
Okay, I am a proud nerd.
All right.
First of all, I'm not the HarryPotter fan.
I mean, it's not on every day.
I'm more of a Star Wars orMarvel nerd.
I mean, I even have twolightsabers.
So, yes, I am a nerd and I'mproud of it.
(01:17:47):
I don't care.
And if I had an Iron man suitevery podcast, I would have the
Iron man suit on, just to showit off.
And if anyone doubts that, I'llhappily prove them wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
Um, I can attest he'd
be wearing it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:07):
He'd wear it to work
If he could get away with it, I
wouldn't be working, I'd besaving people from everywhere,
yeah, but yeah, yeah, happy wife, exactly, but I still have
(01:18:28):
tomorrow and I still have monday.
Okay, oh well, I'm, I am.
I will watch mystery alaskathis weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:18:32):
I want to it's a
great movie yeah, and I know
young blood, young blood's goodtoo.
I think I have that on a vhs I.
I taped it off uh what's a vhs?
Speaker 2 (01:18:47):
and you know, I know
what that is.
That's a whole new podcast yeahum, that's the one with um
loblo roblo, thank you yeah, cynthia gibb, sounds like
excuses.
Speaker 1 (01:19:06):
Give it to him, adam,
for once, you're going after
him instead of me.
Yeah Go, adam go.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
I'm just gonna hide
the chat so I don't see it
anymore.
Anything else before we get outof here?
Speaker 1 (01:19:26):
Uh, no, but Anything
else before we get out of here?
No, but yeah, you know hockeywe're close, we're very close.
Golden State Rookie face-offscoming in a couple Of weeks and
we will be there.
We will be at the Ducks and theKings In Irvine.
Speaker 2 (01:19:44):
Someone else we know

We will be at the ducks and thekings in irvine.
Um, someone else we know mightbe there.
I don't want to say who becausehe says he's 50 50 on it.
He said he'll let me know, butwe will be there for the sunday
game.
And the only thing that suckedwas I was supposed to be on call
that weekend.
You were supposed to be.
I was supposed to be on callthat weekend.
You were supposed to be, I wassupposed to be, but I ended up
(01:20:06):
switching with someone.
Oh, so you that that wentthrough.
Speaker 1 (01:20:10):
Yeah, cause we didn't
talk about that.
Speaker 2 (01:20:11):
Yeah, I switched.
Well, he just ended up takingmy weekend and then on Monday
when we go back to work, I'mback on call.
I'm like I didn't care.
You could have taken my wholeweek or just taken Sunday for me

You can't ignore me.
Oh, that was funny.
(01:20:32):
We're going to have to get hima shirt, Captain.
Oh, I know.
Speaker 1 (01:20:37):
We will.
Speaker 2 (01:20:41):

We'll be there for the duckskings game.

I like I've never been to aricky face off game.
