(00:56):
Isn't that a Miami area code?
I should have run a race inMiami for this one.
Oh, tell me about all the epicfail Info at runeeddrinknet.
Let me know.
But I didn't.
I went on a wonderful daycationstay near to homecation run,
(01:17):
which I went while Dana slept in.
I went to Siesta Key and did arun for the turtles and then I
had some fantastic seafood atthe Lobster Pot and finally, I
(01:38):
capped off a wonderful day inSiesta Key and the Sarasota area
at the Siesta Key RumDistillery Tour.
So I am, I was not in Miami, but I had a wonderful beach
(01:58):
daycation nonetheless.
And before I tell you aboutthat, we need to do some shout
outs, so it's really good thatyou're listening along.
Everyone who completed thespringtime surprise races.
We saw pictures of the Will RunFor Crew, sherry aka Runs in a
(02:21):
Skirt, kelly Beckering atWunderlust and Pretzel Dust, jen
Kim and so many others, including an awesome face.
There was a social media postof Jeff Galloway just chilling,
just chilling in front of thecastle, deep in thought, and I
just have to go back and readall the captions about that and
(02:43):
I just have to go back and readall the captions about that.
He is as America's coach and mycoach as I'm making my way back
to 5K and beyond.
And we had major FOMO watchingeverybody at the springtime
surprise races.
All of the costumes were great.
Stephanie Humphrey, you andyour munchkin, you all were
(03:09):
great.
Stephanie Humphrey, you andyour munchkin, you all were
adorable and justcongratulations to everybody who
was there.
I really wanted to be there, but I had a wonderful weekend in
Siesta Key, while you had anincredible and awesome time in
Orlando.
If you want shout outs foryourself or someone you know and
it doesn't have to necessarilybe a running shout out, it could
(03:33):
be trying a new food, it couldbe trying a new beverage.
It could be a major promotionat work.
We like to celebrate all theaccomplishments here at the Run
Eat Drink podcast.
So email us, attach a littlevideo or not video, but audio
recording.
Attach a little audio recordingand send it to info at
(03:57):
runeatdrinknet about 30 secondsto a minute, and we can make you
Runcation Nation famous.
Let's celebrate each other.
Or you can call and leave amessage and we can play that
voicemail and that's at941-677-2733.
That's 941-677-2733.
(04:21):
7-7-3-3.
Now, before we talk running, Ireally have to tell you I have
been bookending my day with veryimportant routine and ritual.
I really I've been thinking alot about as I head on back to
(04:41):
5k and 10k distances and beyond.
It's been hard to come backafter, to be honest, really not
wanting to get out of bed a lotof the time.
So I've been thinking a lotabout how important the start of
my day is and how the end of myday and how the end of my day,
(05:09):
the end of my day, and how Iwind down and how I sleep, has
an impact on that, on how Istart the next day.
In fact, I was listening to apodcast, an episode with Mel
Robbins.
The new book she's got out iscalled the Let them Theory.
She was talking about a bedtimeroutine and when I reach for
magic mind mental performanceshots to start my day, along
(05:32):
with my coffee, it helps me gainclarity, it helps me get going,
keep going, avoid the energycrash.
But you know what?
Also, taking their shots at theend of my day, the sleep shots,
(05:54):
they look like the little shotsinstead of green they're
lavender, they're lavendercolored and they have lavender
in them.
They have ashwagandha forrelaxation and lemon balm and
(06:15):
chamomile and 5-HTP for fallingasleep and for sleep.
Tell you that after using boththe mental performance shot and
then the sleep shot at the endof the day, I even had enough
energy to go to a 7 pm hot yogaclass in the middle of the week
(06:40):
and usually I'm in bed by whatlike?
I'm in bed at eight and have,or I have been, lately.
Anyway, I love that.
It's not a quick fix that takesyou on a roller coaster,
feeling really up and then down, and then up and then down, to
(07:00):
make consistent changes in theway that you feel.
Helps with stress has allnatural ingredients their sleep
performance shot.
It's so good that magnesium forcalming the nervous system and
relaxing the muscles and itdoesn't make me groggy in the
(07:25):
morning.
It's not when you have a coldand you take some cold medicine
and it can linger in the morning.
Not like that at all.
So I love that Magic Mind hasexpanded into this arena of
wellness because I really thinksleep is so important to
training and to overall wellnessin your life.
So I really am appreciative tothe folks at Magic Mind because
(07:47):
they have given us a limitedtime offer that you can use

So you can have that bookendedfabulous day at a discount.
And we really thank Magic Mindfor sponsoring this week's show.
(08:32):
Let's talk running and let'stalk the 39th annual run for the
turtles on Siesta Key Beach.
And when I say on the beach, entirely 100% on the beach.
You pick up your packet as youarrive at Siesta Key Beach and
that is really the only partthat is not on sand.
(08:54):
The race took place about eighto'clock in the morning.
I got there between, I don'tknow, 730 and 745.
I would say there's freeparking at the beach and it's
just a gorgeous beach.
It has a playground set up andsome shelters, like a park would
for you, and it also has agreat place to get food and
(09:19):
beverage called the Sun Deck.
All when you arrive right thereby the parking lot.
So that is where packet pickupwas and there was like a little
mini health fair expo with someother races and some mascots and
it was just a really smoothpacket pickup.
(09:39):
And then you get out on thebeach and the soft sand is your
way out there to the hard packedsand and the start of the 39th
annual run for the turtles andit's all about those turtles
that are nesting in the sand andtrying to make it to the water
(09:59):
once they're born.
You know, I mean once they're,once they are nested and then
born and it's just.
We didn't get to see anyturtles firsthand, but we did
get to see video at one of theexpo or morning pickup booths at
the health fair and there was alittle quiz where you could
(10:24):
lift up a question and see theanswer and different fun facts
about the turtles and it wasjust, it was nice and they had
coffee set up and they hadapples, bananas, bagels, and did
I mention coffee?
Oh, yes, they had coffee andorange slices and it was just
(10:48):
fantastic.
And they had age group awards.
That there were no finishermedals but there were age group
ribbons and medals for peoplewho placed, I believe, in the
top six is what it was that Iheard when, when I was at the
post race.
But so you're in that area andthere's a bottle refill station
(11:09):
and you can use one of theirrefillable bottles so that you
don't leave trash or you canbring your own.
And we just happened to havegotten one and we might have an
interview coming up later onthis month with a founder of one
of the reusable bottles with afilter, just a fabulous little
(11:29):
bottle product that I thinkwe're going to use again and
again, actually.
But so I filled mine with waterand I headed out to the start
and I just barely made it acrossthe finish, across the start
line, to at the tail end tostart the race, and it's
entirely on the beach, entirelyon the beach.
(11:52):
So I know that will have animpact on what you wear, how you
dress.
The weather was not that humid,so I can see why they have it
in April.
In March, april you don't haveas high humidity as you do in
the later months in Florida.
So it was just gorgeous weatherand the ocean is right there,
(12:14):
just beautiful sea salt smell.
You can see the birds, you cansee some, you can pick up some
seashells, which I did, whichserved as my little finisher
medal.
I found a little shell that Iloved, that I kept, and yeah, it
was the 5k was just aturnaround, so it was all
(12:37):
entirely on the beach and youmight want to wear old shoes,
you might want to wear some ofthose five finger shoes, it just
depends.
I wore some older brooks that Iknew I could just wash right
out and let dry and they wouldbe fine.
And the volunteers at the onewater stop where you have the
(12:58):
turnaround, they had little youcan refill your bottle or they
had little cups that they gaveyou.
And then there was a trash canright there.
So there was no trash on thebeach and gosh, it was just.
The sky was beautiful and therewas no pressure at all in this
race.
You just took your time.
(13:22):
People are waving at you asthey're playing and laughing
with their families on the beachand they're dancing in the sand
and they're making sandcastles, sandcastles, and they made one.
One was like an alligator or acrocodile kind of
sandcastle-esque.
On the way back, after theturnaround that I saw it was
(13:44):
just gorgeous and what abeautiful day and I just
remember being so filled withgratitude about being able to
take some time.
I don't know if anybody elsehas that kind of impact.
When you're out on the beachyou just you smell the sea, air
(14:06):
and you have.
If you had your shoes off, youwould have your toes in the sand
and it's just so low stress andso peaceful.
And I hear from some maybecertified yoga teachers that
it's good for your stability todo some running and walking in
(14:30):
the sand.
So I think I did that formyself.
I crossed the finish line.
I took a picture.
I felt some accomplishment.
I hung around for myself.
I crossed the finish line.
I took a picture.
I felt some accomplishment.
I hung around for some of theawards.
The shirts were really greattech t-shirts bright orange and
I saw some in the previous yearswere maroon, were yellow, were
(14:51):
that kind of teal-ish, and thenit had all the sponsors on the
back and then a turtle outlinedon the front.
They're just, it was just cuteand I really like the fit of the
lady's shirt and I think thatit'll be great, as we get into
the summer months and I startearlier and earlier with longer
(15:13):
runs, to wear that shirt.
It'll be cool and I'll bevisible.
And it's not I'll be maybe thecolor of a traffic cone, but
it's not that bad.
I liked it and and it felt good, very nice material.
So I am definitely keeping thatshirt and I think a turtle
(15:36):
could be our mascot here at theRun E-Drink Podcast Towers,
because I run as slow as aturtle trying to wade through
some peanut butter or somereally thick sand actually.
And the post-run experience wasjust wonderful.
I stayed around and I had somemore coffee and I had some
orange slices and I applaudedthe runners, took some pictures
(15:58):
for some runners that placed andgot ribbons and or got medals
for being, I think, top three intheir age groups and it was
just.
I met a lot of great peoplesmiling and clapping and
cheering me on the beach andsmiling and laughing and
introducing themselves to mealong during the little after
(16:19):
party and I also took pictureswith the mascots that they had
there.
What were their names?
Oh, gilly and Shelly, andShelly was the turtle, and then
I don't Gilly, it's justadorable, and it's the.
It's the Moat Marine Laboratorythat this race is backed by and
(16:43):
that benefits from this race, and I think the 40th anniversary
could be a wonderful RuncationNation kind of meetup and really
aligned with the springtimesurprise races and really it
aligned with the springtimesurprise races.
So we I actually went to washup in the restroom and a woman
was actually changing to get inthe car to go to Disney right
(17:05):
after the race.
So Sarasota is it's got its ownairport.
It is beautiful.
There are a lot of Airbnbs anda lot of hotels around that area
in Siesta Key and they have atrolley in addition to, I'm sure
(17:28):
, uber and Lyft and so manylittle places to get food and
beverage to celebrate youraccomplishments.
I cannot recommend this raceenough and, if it aligns with
any other race or not, I wouldlove to go up the night before
(17:52):
and stay and have a nice meal, anice hearty meal, and then do
the 5K and spend some time onthe beach and then have a lovely
night in town with dinner andbeverages and just go back home
rejuvenated and anybody whowants to join me next year is
(18:14):
certainly welcome.
Info at runnydrinknet.
Let me know, we'll make a plan.
It's the 40th anniversary ofthe Run for the Turtle, so why
wouldn't we go?
It was great.
I highly recommend.
And now all this talk of running, it's made me so hungry.
(18:36):
It's really made me hungry andI will tell you and if you get
Dana alone for five minutes, hewill talk about how I love all
things seafood in terms ofshrimp, crab oysters and the
(18:56):
like.
I will, and I have been cravingsome crab legs.
I like snow crab.
Alaskan king crab is reallywhere it's at for me.
And I did some research aroundthe Siesta Key area and not I
probably could have walked therefrom the free parking at the
(19:18):
beach and then come back to thebeach and spend some time on the
beach after the meal.
But and there's also pay by QRcode parking all around the
restaurants in town.
There are Italian restaurants, there's ice cream, there's.
It's just, it's like a littlebeach town and it's so quaint
(19:39):
and so cute.
I found, doing some researchabout ratings and reviews, that
a little place called theLobster Pot in Siesta Key, which
was five minutes from the beachhas excellent crab, excellent
Alaskan king crab.
So off I went and the timingwas about perfect Once I got
(20:01):
done at the post-raise partythen I could get in the car, go
find parking.
At the time I should have justwalked there, honestly, but I
found parking.
It was not really a problem tofind parking and by the time I
found the parking the restaurantwas actually just then opening.
(20:23):
It was what?
Maybe 1130 or so, so 1145.
So I walked in and I was one ofthe first people there, so 1145
.
So I walked in and I was one ofthe first people there and it's
just, it's like.
It's like a fish house or aseafood house, a very rustic
(20:46):
oldies feel, but super clean.
The bar was great.
They had taps from CalusaBrewing, which we featured on
the show with mobster lobsterand mango cart.
They had on tap, they had just, and they had some of the
stables as well.
They had their own housemaidsangria, red sangria, and they
(21:07):
had a full bar.
So you could have anything youwant in terms of beverage.
I sat down and you could havethere's lobster bisque, which I
ended up bringing home for Danaand for me to have, and I
ordered just the.
The first thing I said toDominic, who was an amazing
(21:29):
server.
I said what is the housespecialty?
What should I come here and notleave until I get?
And he said, far and away, it'seither the boil or the king
crab.
And I said sign me up for theking crab, because that is what
(21:50):
I had been waiting for.
Those were music to my ears, those words had been waiting for
.
Those were music to my ears, those words.
And so Alaskan king crab I got,and I got two sides to go with
it and they have just thosestandard fish house or seafood
house sides.
I got coleslaw and mac andcheese and the mac and cheese
was a white mac and cheese andthey also had mashed potatoes
(22:13):
and they had greens.
So you could have any of that, but I had coleslaw and mac and
cheese.
The Alaskan king crab.
I really thought, okay, atevery place where I have ever
been, having Alaskan king crabrequires a lot of work.
And anybody who was in theRencation Nation that went to
(22:34):
Gasparilla and then went out toeat with me, and Susie and Jojo
and Dawn and Christy and Gregand Jesse, everybody and Darlene
and just the whole crew, youall got to see firsthand how I
just go to town and I know thatI'm trying to get every little
(22:56):
bit of crab out of the shell anda lot of people don't like to
order it that way because theythink it's work and it is work.
But if it's done it's worth it.
And what I mean by it's done,it's served with drawn butter
and lots of lemon and it's notsteamed until it's rubbery.
(23:16):
And my trick is to take all thecrab and get it all out of the
shelf first when it's hot andpliable.
But what was really amazingwhen it came to the table was it
was absolutely beautiful and itwas pre-cracked for me, so that
really all I had to do wasseparate along the lines where
(23:37):
it had been cracked for me andremove these huge chunks of
amazing crab, so tender, soflavorful, that brininess of the
sea, the lemon and the butter, and it was just meaty but not
(23:57):
chewy, and it's not as flaky.
Alaskan king crab is not asflaky as, say, snow crab and
when you have stone crab, whichis in season, you know what?
What is it?
From October to May, I thinkit's.
It's more solid.
(24:18):
So I would say, if it's done, the Alaskan king crab is between
the snow crab and the stonecrab consistency in terms of
meatiness.
It was tender, it was hot, itwas tender, it was hot even
(24:40):
after, because what I do is make, make them bring me extra
butter and I use a bigger bowland I just I get everything out
of the claws and into the butterand then I squeeze the lemon
over top of it and then I eat itin a glorious moment.
The first moment that you tasteit it is just seafood perfection
(25:05):
, shellfish perfection.
And the coleslaw was just yourstandard house coleslaw, but it
had that tangy dressing.
And then the mac and cheese wasthe white mac and cheese.
Add salt and pepper and it'sperfection and a bonus.
When I said to Dominic listen, what do I need to take home to
(25:29):
the husband, he said lobsterbisque, 100%.
So I got two large bowls to goCreamy, buttery lobster broth or
stock Goodness.
It just was amazing to have.
Later on, when I got home withDana and his recommendation was
(25:52):
spot on with the beverage too,as we head into the beverage
portion of our show, I got thehouse made sangria.
It was red sangria, it wassweet, it was not dry, it came
with all the fruits in the glassand I loved that.
Dominic left a straw, served itin a wine glass and it was cool
(26:15):
, it was refreshing, it waslight, it was sweet and not dry,
and I just loved it.
The one mistake I did make isnot to ask what red base they
use, like Cabernet or Brillo, but it was sweet and it was not
dry, so take my word for it.
If you like sangria, if youlike sweet sangria, red sangria,
(26:38):
you should give it a try forsure.
But the beers, the local beers, they have on tap great stuff,
and I also got.
I stayed hydrated and I hadthem.
Bring me some San Pellegrinofizzy water.
All in all, I will tell you, thelobster pot in Siesta Key five
(26:59):
stars would do it again.
Fabulous service, amazing food, and that's everything you want
in a meal after anaccomplishment like a 5K run for
the turtles.
So has this made you thirsty?
I talked about the sangria atthe restaurant, but I have three
(27:24):
words for you.
Runcation Nation, you'veaccomplished local fantastic
eats.
Now three words Free rum tour.
(27:44):
Yes, please, of course.
Siesta Key Rum has a free tour, and they have three in the day.
I signed up for the midday one,the one o'clock one.
It's about a 40 minute tour.
When you get there I will say Iarrived at one.
I should have come about maybe10, 15 minutes early, but that's
okay.
I got what I missed in that 15minute window before the tour.
(28:05):
I got after the tour.
So, either way, they took greatcare of me.
I arrived and there were aboutwhat I don't know.
There were maybe 10, 15 peoplein the tour and they gave me a
little, a tiny little sampleplastic cup of some of their
toasted coconut rum, and Iunderstand why it is an
(28:28):
award-winning rum.
It is got that toasty, caramelly, toasty sweetness, but
it's not overly caramelly, about toasted coconut being
different than just thesweetness of the raw coconut.
So I had a little bit of thatto sip on while I listened to
(28:52):
Kevin and another gentleman todeliver an amazing tour and show
us the stills and the processthat they go through to make not
only their silver rum which, dare I say, should be their
flagship rum, so smooth, dangerous, it is their flagship
(29:12):
rum, so smooth and dangerous, dangerous, it is their flagship
rum, so smooth and dangerous.
And, yeah, just Kevin'scustomer service manager there
invited us to come back and sitand chat with him about the
history of Siesta Key Rum, itsconnection to the communique.
Kevin Maroney, customerexperience manager there,
(29:33):
invited us to come back and sitdown and chat with him about
what makes it so special, tiesto the community, the history.
We're there for it and I'm goingto tell you right now.
Wicked Dolphin is amazing herein Cape Coral and the coconut
rum that we've had from there, simply awesome.
(29:55):
The key lime rum terrific.
We brought home some of thetoasted coconut, the silver, and
their coffee rum from SiestaKey.
Their coffee rum from siestakey just fantastic, natural
(30:20):
flavor, smooth, it's justperfection.
And when I asked kevin whichcocktail that we should talk
about, he looked for a long timebecause after the tour you come
back into their, their areawhere they have their retail.
They have some silopines andthey have the sila silopine shot
(30:42):
glasses and they have shirtsand they have their rum.
They have orgeat, which is iswonderful, or orgeat tomato,
tomato, oh so good.
So I was asking what drinkshould we feature during the
beverage portion of our show?
(31:03):
They have all these recipes ontheir website.
You can make a caramel applerum, teeny.
A siesta key lime pie, a siestakey kick and punch, a cocoa
nutty brew.
The great pumpkin cocktail.
The great pumpkin cocktail thatI think is a play on the
(31:26):
Charlie Brown special forHalloween Cucumber, jalapeno,
rumerito, which is spicy theylet us have a little sip of that
and it packs a little bit of apunch.
So it's incredible.
There's a siesta key watermelonagua fresca.
Oh, just delightful.
You can see their recipes andone of their still is named Carl
(31:49):
.
It's just terrific.
But so I asked him which one Ishould feature and he took a
long look and he said you shouldfeature the Sarasota Mai Tai.
So that's what I ordered at theend of the tour to taste.
And so it's Siesta Key toastedcoconut rum, siesta Key spiced
(32:12):
rum, which is, oh my gosh, it'slike the mulled wine spices in a
rum.
Oh, so good, so good.
Pineapple juice, orange juice, orgeat, which is almond syrup,
and grenadine.
And I'm going to tell you theSarasota Mai Tai grenadine.
And I'm going to tell you theSarasota Mai Tai.
It was coming to me and Kevinsaid here is the Mai Tai.
(32:36):
It's not Mai Tai anymore, it'syour Thai now.
And I just thought your ThaiMai Tai, it's our Thai, we have
a Thai.
But it was just delightful, flavorful and delicious.
(32:57):
I highly recommend that spicedrum, just on its own as a sipper
, it's so good.
Yeah, you can make some kind ofChristmassy or holiday-like
beverage with it.
I just am not at that time ofyear.
I really need to think aboutthat.
It's fantastic.
And they have some aged rumsometimes after the tour that
are left over from specialtybarrels.
(33:19):
They have some partnershipswith some local breweries where
they will give aged rums.
They'll give you somedistillers, reserve or maple
syrup barrel spiced or it.
I just they'll have some thatare not necessarily that you can
(33:40):
take home but they're left fromspecial editions that you could
try in their infinity room intoinfinity and beyond.
But it's not like that.
It's amazing.
And the bar is just fantasticand they have a quote where
(34:01):
they're barrel aging some rumthat says it's not drinking on
the job, it's research and Ithought that was great and that
is apparently from someone whopassed away, unfortunately, but
was just amazing as part oftheir staff there.
And they have a tiki vibe theinfinity room is the tiki bar
(34:28):
and have a sign up.
When they were talking it wasvery hard not to be distracted
by this.
Time flies when you're havingrum and it's just.
It's a fantastic vibe there anddelicious rum.
I the silver you could put withcoke like a whole rum and coke
vibe and you could just.
(34:49):
It's like you're tasting justCoke, so it's dangerous.
You got to be careful and makesure that you have a designated
driver or you're not leaving thehouse.
It's just good, it's just good.
And they took care of us, theymade sure everybody was going to
get home safely and it was allin moderation.
(35:10):
What can I say about Siesta KeyRum?
Stay tuned for more about theiramazing product in history
later on within the coming weeks.
And yeah, I loved our tie.
It's not a Mai Tai, maybeit's's your tie, but it's our
(35:30):
tie.
We had the tie and it wasfantastic.
So, siesta key cheers, thanksfor taking such great care of me
on the tour and I met someincredible people there and it
was just a wonderful daycationruncation.
I wish it were longer, becauseonce you put your toes in the
(35:54):
sand, you have a little bit oflocal seafood, seafood from a
local establishment that iscooked right, and you have some
delicious locally made rum.
Oh, that is a day to rememberand to enjoy while you have it
(36:18):
and to be grateful for.
