Hey, welcome to episode 315 ofthe Run Drink Podcast.
I'm your host, amy, and flyingsolo.
Today I've got a great show foryou, including shout outs, a 5K
(01:12):
and a place named after one ofour favorite beverages we love
whiskey.
This week, we bring to you theSeaWorld Rescue Run 5K in
Florida and the whiskey food andbeverages in Orlando, florida.
Yes, it is the summer, it isthe time of training, not really
the time of high volume milesand racing.
We're bringing you some localgoodness that we can drive to
(01:33):
and possibly inspire you to makesome whiskey based beverages of
your own at home when you'rekicking it back after a long run
or a long work week on a Fridaynight.
So that's what this week's showis all about.
I know it's been a hot minute.
I just want to give a shout outto our guest from last show,
(01:58):
kevin Maroney, and he is fromSiesta Key and he is from Siesta
Key Rum Yum.
I was going to say rum Yum, andI stopped myself for a minute
and I said rum.
It is yummy, rummy Rum Rum.
Yes, you know what I mean.
He was just such a pleasure tochat with via Zoom on the last
(02:23):
show.
It's a show that is near anddear to our hearts in the
summertime because you hit somany of those national days
around rum.
You have National Rum Day, youhave National Mojito Day,
national Mai Tai Day.
You just have this bevy of daysthat deserve the best rum.
(02:46):
Kevin and the folks there atSiesta Key, they are just
killing it.
I am in love with the toastedcoconut rum, the coffee rum and
the Mai Tai that I got to tastewhen I went on the tour after I
ran for the Turtles there inSiesta Key.
(03:09):
That would be perfect runcationin the Siesta Key area to have
that cap off a great race.
That Siesta Key rum is justfabulous.
Mai Tai Day is coming up at theend of August.
(03:29):
I'm just saying you may want topick some up at your local
Lickl store, at your local TotalWine or ABC, or you can go on
their website and find theirramen where it's located near
you.
Kevin, thank you for an amazingshow on a spirit that we love.
(03:52):
There are some other shout outsthat we have this week Jessica
Lynn O'Keefe and Eric Million.
We have to say congratulationson your Bridge of the Gods half
marathon.
She sent us some clips of thevistas, the views, the stairs
(04:13):
that you apparently have to dotwice.
We need to get them on the show.
To recap, that, incidentally, was also a birthday celebration.
So, jessica, fan of the show, founder and supporter of the
Runny Drink podcast, a patron ofours, happy birthday back on
(04:33):
August 1st.
We hope you had a wonderfulcelebration.
And on the topic of birthdayshout outs, christina from the
Metal Chasers, bill andChristina Craig.
They do those virtual racessupporting great causes and
supporting coaching throughMetal Chasers and it's just
(04:56):
fabulous.
Happy, belated birthday to bothJessica and Christina.
21st birthday, hope you had awonderful time.
Hope you had an amazingruncation or training, run or
food and beverage, or all of theabove.
And if you want a shout out onthe show for you or for someone
(05:17):
you care about, it could be fora birthday, a run, a training
run, a distance they have notconquered yet that they
conquered and now you want tocelebrate them, or it could be a
shout out for an amazingaccomplishment that's not
running related or that isrunning related.
(05:39):
Either way, if you want toshout out for and become
Runcation Nation famous, we canmake your friend or family
member Runcation Nation famous.
Email us at, you can write itout or attach a voice memo of 30
seconds to a minute and we canplay it on the show and make
your Runcation Nation famous.
Now, if you want to do therecording, I would say the old
(06:03):
school or old fashioned way, let's say you can leave us a
message at 941-677-2733.
So, once again, that's email usat info at runeatdrinknet or
call and leave us a message at941-677-2733.
(06:30):
Now let's talk running.
And yes, like I said at the topof the show, it is what?
Hotter than the surface of thesun here in Florida, the
humidity, the feels liketemperatures.
They're in the triple digits.
I know that some of you arefacing this dry heat, maybe in
Arizona, maybe in Arizona, thedeep humidity and thunderstorms
(06:55):
of the summer that you have totrain around.
You really do have to trainaround that weather.
You have to get up at oh darkridiculous.
Or wait until the sun goes downto get some temperature that is
survivable for your long run.
I don't know what tips ortricks you have making it
(07:21):
through this hot, this humidheat in the midst of summer, but
I know that some of you arevery resourceful.
One of our tricks is to run 5Ksfor good causes or 10Ks for
good causes, specifically themeparks.
(07:41):
Now on this show we have doneDisneyland races, we've done
Walt Disney World races, butwe've never done SeaWorld races.
Yes, this is the first time onour show that we have featured a
SeaWorld run and it's a rescuerun, so it benefits a great
(08:04):
cause the animals and their careat SeaWorld.
And I wanted to do this one.
I got up at oh Dark Ridiculousyes, I've used it twice now in
the same episode oh DarkRidiculous To drive up to
Orlando on a Saturday in June todo the SeaWorld Rescue Run,
(08:26):
which is a 5K within the park, and I wanted to see how it
compared to a Disney run.
Would there be DJs, cheer squads, music, how would the shade be?
Are the attractions running?
What is the comparison?
How are the race announcers andsize of the race?
(08:51):
Because they've had it forseveral years.
If you look on SeaWorld'swebsite, they've had it for
several years.
If you look on SeaWorld'swebsite, they've had it for a
few years now and it's on runsign up.
If you want to register for itnext year, if you are going to
be in the Orlando area taking asummer vacation and hitting the
theme parks, you can also get atraining run in Kick-ass medal.
(09:12):
I'm going to say also get atraining run in Kick-ass medal.
I'm going to say For SeaWorldit was blue and green, like the
blue and the green of the ocean.
It's sparkly, it's silver, it'sgot some heft to it.
It's as big as my hand.
(09:38):
It might be as big as Dana'shand.
The Run Sign Up website makesit so easy for race organizers.
It took me about three hours toget there from our hometown in
Cape Coral.
I got there with five minutesto spare.
The people doing the check-inprocess in the parking lot of
SeaWorld were still there and Igot to check in and I got my bib
and I was maybe one of the lastpeople to cross the start line,
(09:58):
but it gave me a chance to seethat there were not corrals per
se.
It's like a Jeff Galloway racein Atlanta when we had Barb's 5k
and they said just line up inthe front if you are a faster
runner, and then if you're inmiddle of the pack, just go in
the middle and then if you'regoing to be a walker or if
(10:21):
you've got a stroller or a petor a guide or service animal,
towards the back.
So that's the way it's set up.
There was music, there was arace announcer, a very profesh
race announcer.
Now was it the team?
If I'm doing a comparisonbetween this SeaWorld run, I
(10:45):
would like to say that SeaWorldis maybe run Disney light.
I'll say it's Run Disney Litevery light.
They are in the beginningstages.
Could they build up to whatDisney has, what Run Disney has
during Wine and Dine PrincessSpringtime Marathon Weekend?
(11:08):
Sure they could.
This one was not.
There were not thousands ofrunners.
I would say there were runnerslining up.
When I arrived, parking was abreeze.
We used the parking lot of thetheme park and part of the
parking lot was the racecheck-in and then we lined up
(11:32):
adjacent to the parking lot, lined up adjacent to the parking
lot and we were off and therewere confetti and streamers that
were green and blue and all ofthat.
There was a race shirt as well, but it was not a tech shirt, it
was a cotton white shirt withthe rescue run logo on it.
It could be good for a hot day,but not for a run because, as
(11:56):
we know, cotton and long runs, especially in the summer.
So the size of the race we'vetalked about the course was
throughout the park.
You got to see the coasters, you got to see the stadiums
where SeaWorld would havedifferent shows.
They had an educational showfor all of the participants
(12:18):
after the kids' run was over, because there was a 5K and then
the kids' run and they haddiscounts on park tickets the
day of the run.
That was great.
They had different employees atdifferent segments of the park
with handheld stuffed or balloonanimals.
So there were sharks, therewere dolphins, turtles, fish.
(12:44):
It was so cute, their staff wasso motivating and you could
hear the music, because thereare so many stadiums where shows
go on throughout the park, inaddition to the coasters and all
the food and beverage fun thatSeaWorld has to offer.
But because you have thestadiums with speakers, the
(13:07):
music was pumped in and playingthe entirety of the 5K,
self-contained in the park, noteven in the parking lot.
You had jams that were upbeatthe entire way, even if you
didn't have headphones in.
I was the very last runner tofinish.
(13:29):
I walked the whole thingbecause I am combating this
injury that just will not seemto go away my knee and my back
and, like Dana and I have this2025, we've been broken, but
he's been broken since 2024.
So I was the last runner, lastrunner, and what I loved is
(13:51):
there was a woman with her guidedog, her emotional support dog,
that was stopping to takepictures of the dog gorgeous
German Shepherd.
At some of the highlights ofthe course, like the entrance to
some of the coasters or uniqueplaces where there might be
(14:12):
character photo opportunities asa theme park guest, it was so
fun and everybody was still outthere.
When I got a picture with adolphin, which was so fun, and I
got lots of applause by thevolunteers and the SeaWorld team
(14:32):
when I crossed the finish line.
It was great.
I enjoyed that morning so verymuch.
There were wonderful people onthe course who were just there
to enjoy the atmosphere.
Was it hot?
Yes, did we get bananas andwater as post-race snacks, in
(14:54):
addition to the metal and thewhite cotton shirt?
Yes, would I do it again?
I think I would.
It's a great little summer funrun, especially if you are
vacationing in the Orlando area.
Is it as big as a run Disneyand just glammed up as a run
(15:14):
Disney race?
No, small and friendly raceshave their places.
It's like when you run theturkey trot in your local town.
You're not expecting run Disney.
You got DJs up on huge rigsevery so often, characters and
videos of Disney movies.
It had its own special charmand what I loved about it is
(15:37):
they didn't cut anybody off thecourse.
They let me finish, despite howmany times I stopped to stretch
my T-band.
So they were friendly.
It was great.
Bananas and water at the finish, restrooms galore because it
was in the park proper and itwas just a fine family fun race
(15:58):
and I would do it again.
So the SeaWorld Rescue Run, the2025 run, is still up on the run
sign up website, but it hasoccurred every year.
Look for the 2026 version Ifyou're going to be in the
Orlando area in June.
It would be a great anddifferent thing to do as a part
(16:18):
of a family vacation at thattime of year.
Well done, seaworld.
Cheers to you.
Not beverage yet.
So let's not say cheers, let'ssay all this running made me
hungry, made me starving.
So what did I do?
Later on in the day, actuallyin the evening, I went to a
(16:42):
place with a co-owner andfounder of Pure Creative Apparel
, pam Gonzalez.
She supplies our race shirts.
She supplies our podcast shirts.
She's made specialty designs.
She and Ariel have madespecialty designs for us from
Pure Creative Apparel.
They're just fabulous people.
I was in the Orlando area shelives there and picked me up
(17:05):
from the hotel where I wasstaying by SeaWorld.
She and I discovered togetherthe whiskey.
The whiskey for the first timeI had never been there and it's
not on.
There's a bar, but then there'salso a small space for live
(17:36):
music.
There's plenty of seating thatis not at the bar but has the
feel of a speakeasy but also acozy atmosphere, as if you're
coming in out of the coldweather to be by a fire
atmosphere, as if you're comingin out of the cold weather to be
by a fire.
But trust me, there's plenty ofAC there.
Their game is whiskey.
Their theme is whiskey, whiskey, this, whiskey, that.
(18:08):
And so we started with whiskeychips.
This is the description Housecooked chips, chunky, smoked
blue cheese sauce, blue cheesecrumbles, citrus, marinated pork
, balsamic glaze, diced tomatoesand scallions.
The chips were crisp, the bluecheese gave it that funk, the
balsamic glaze gave it sweetnessand the pork was meaty and
(18:30):
tender.
The tomatoes and the scallionsjust gave it that element of
freshness.
You could get that perfect bitewith all of that.
Oh was so good and it's a greatstarter for a table to share.
So we started with that.
And then we went on to theirburger list, and their burger
list is they have a whiskeyburger onto their burger list
(18:55):
and their burger list is theyhave a whiskey burger.
They have all sorts ofdifferent burgers for you to try
.
We just had one that caught oureye because it seemed unique.
I hadn't seen a burger with apoached pear on it ever.
It was a different twist on itever it was a different twist we
(19:16):
hadn't seen on a menu.
It's called the salty pear ontheir burger list and they have
a house patty arugula tomato, whiskey onions, a bourbon,
poached pear, smoked applewoodbacon, creamy brie sauce and
garlic aioli.
And we had it with a side oftheir onion rings.
(19:37):
Their onion rings were crisp.
You took a bite out of it andthe onion didn't come out of the
breading and it was just heartyand crisp and delicious.
The burger, the bun held up tothe burger.
It was the house patty, cookedperfectly.
(19:57):
The arugula added thepepperiness.
The whiskey onions had a slightsweetness and a smokiness.
The bourbon poached pear youhave that kind of graininess of
a pear but then it was soft andthen you have the smokiness and
crunchiness of the bacon and thebrie added its own level of
(20:19):
creaminess and then a slighthint of garlic from the aioli.
Hello, my friend, my beautifulfriend.
This burger was amazing and letme just tell you that we had
three courses, but the dessertwas not from the dessert menu,
it was another starter.
(20:40):
It was called the S and Spotatoes and it says sweet
potato waffle fries.
That's right, sweet potatowaffle fries tossed in cinnamon
sugar and drizzled with Amy'sfavorite caramel.
You know that's a winner.
Winner.
A starter is a dessert fordinner.
(21:02):
Yes, it was so good.
The sweet potato fry had thatelement of sweetness and then
the cinnamon sugar and they werecrisp on the outside and the
caramel was just perfect.
Like you could just drag one ofthe sweet potato waffle fries
through the caramel and it wasjust magical.
(21:23):
It was like the best sweetpotato souffle you would ever
have at a holiday.
Those kinds of flavors inwaffle fries Just amazing.
And these are only the whiskeychips, the salty pear burger and
the S&S potatoes.
(21:43):
That's just the tip of theiceberg as far as their menu
goes Amazing, delicious.
You should check out even moreof their menu and we will link
to it in the show notes.
But that's not all we had there, because it's called the whiskey
.
So guess what their specialtyis?
(22:05):
Whiskey crafted cocktails.
I had the whiskey old fashioned, which was the whiskey single
barrel jack, orange bitters, rhubarb bitters, raw cane sugar,
fresh orange and a TraverseCity black cherry and rock candy
(22:26):
stir.
This old fashioned was great.
It was smoky, but not too smoky.
There was freshness andsweetness.
If you like an old fashioned, you will like this old fashioned
.
But then we also had what'scalled the black apple.
(22:50):
You could even have whiskeyflights if you wanted to.
They were great, great.
We had what's called the blackapple and they also have
different team members thatcreate new cocktails every so
often that gets refreshed ontheir menu.
But we had the Black Apple andthat's Irish whiskey apple
(23:14):
liqueur, fresh blackberry, lemonjuice, simple syrup and
cranberry juice.
The fresh blackberries thatwere muddled there in the glass
with the lemon juice, thetartness of the lemon juice and
the sweetness of the simplesyrup and the cranberry juice
added an extra layer of thatfruit tart flavor.
(23:34):
It was dynamite.
The whiskey old fashioned andthe black apple were real
winners and the rest of theirbeverage menu looked amazing and
we were pleasantly enjoyingsome cocktails at the end with
(23:54):
our amazing meal at the whiskeyin Orlando, and we highly
recommend it.
I know that if Pam were here shewould say two thumbs up.
In fact, I think she and herfamily went to sit down at a
table and had additional itemsfrom the menu.
(24:14):
Maybe we'll have her on for abonus for our patrons to talk
about what they did have.
Stay tuned for that In themeantime.
That's a wrap for this weekend.
I just want to take this time tosay thank you to everybody who
