Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey everyone and thanks for tuning into the
Toolkit.
This is the pilot episode.
I am Jordan Budd and this willbe, I guess, my new podcast.
I've been in the outdoorindustry now for about 10 years.
I've hosted a couple ofdifferent podcasts.
We have the Rockcast on Rocksfor Rockslidecom and those are
still out there.

(00:20):
You can still listen to some ofthem that I did.
I did that for a couple ofyears and then they have taken
it over now and it's now kind ofa Mulder podcast mixed in with
some gear.
Then, more recently, I did apodcast with Meat Eater, with
Janis Patelis, called the GearTalk.
While we absolutely love thatplatform, we just decided that

(00:42):
it was a little better off in amore visual, with a visual
component to it.
Here I am today doing this.
I thought that it'd be a littlebit helpful for those that are
new to me and just for a pilotof a podcast to go into a little
bit more of my background andwhy.

(01:04):
I feel like I have somethingthat I can bring to the table.
Hopefully, see, you folks canget something from it when you
go into your next adventure Withthat.
Yeah, I'm just going to diveinto a little bit my vision for
the podcast is to cover I wantto cover the topic of gear, but

(01:25):
the reason I gave it the nameToolkit is just because, whether
it's knowledge about how to usesomething, or whether it is the
thing itself that you're using,or just knowledge of how to run
something how to run Onyx orsome mapping software or
whatever that's all a part ofyour Toolkit in my mind.

(01:48):
That's why I called it theToolkit.
Hopefully I really want tocover gear from super intricate
details to big, high leveloverviews of just what I like to
carry or what my guests like tocarry with them.
Overall, I just want to helplisteners make better purchasing
decisions for their nextadventures and things.

(02:09):
We are in my office right nowin Idaho.
This podcast is going to beYouTube based as well as audio
based.
If you're listening to this onan audio version and you would
like to see it, you can go toYouTube.
Just type in Jordan Budd andthen I'll pull it right up and

(02:31):
all these episodes will be ableto come to you on YouTube as
well.
Or there's just a lot of folksthat really don't care.
They just want to listen to iton audio.
That's why I've got it on audioas well.
First, a little background onmyself.
I grew up in Northwest Nebraskaon my family's cattle ranch.
I started out teaching myselfhow to use a camera recording my

(02:55):
own hunts when I was in highschool.
Eventually I started writingarticles and making videos with
a website called Self Filmedcom.
I gained a few years ofexperience with a camera in my
hand, taught myself how to editand was eventually given an
opportunity to film for atelevision show on the outdoor
channel called Best of the Westin Wyoming.

(03:15):
I literally dropped all of myclasses that fall.
For my sophomore semester ofcollege I headed to Wyoming for
my first ever filming job, whichhappened to be a big horn sheep
hunt.
Actually, there's a few of themright there.
Back to back that fall I filmeda few sheep hunts.
I actually edited those onesthat I filmed for the outdoor

(03:37):
channel, which was big at thetime still can, I guess.
I filmed sheep hunts and thensome elk hunts through September
and October.
I learned a ton about living inthe back country in that time
and living with what you have, dealing with what you have and
also not having too much Kind offinding that balance.

(03:58):
There were some big learningcurves and I want to cover that
in some episodes.
That's one thing that's supercool is being able to ask guests
about their learning curves, whether it's when they were
building gear or when they wereout on the hunts themselves.
More adventures, whatever.

(04:18):
I think that'll be really coolto cover as well.
I went on to film that show forfour seasons.
I would just literally go filmin the fall and then I would go
back to college in the spring, eventually offered me a
full-time job.
So I did that for a coupleyears, but four full seasons.

(04:39):
After I left the TV show Irevived my media business called
Running Water Media where Ijust went on the next couple
years to film some hunts forCrispy Boots, rocksidecom and I
had a few private clients aswell that I would go out with.
We did sheep huntsno-transcript, I would say
mostly sheep hunts.
There's some elk hunts thrownin there, some deer hunts,

(05:00):
things like that.
And then in that time I alsostarted the podcast, the
Rockcast, with the help ofRocksidecom.
It was a Rockside podcast Stillgoing on today.
They are doing mule deercontent mixed in with some gear.
It's a great podcast.
If you haven't listened to ityet, after a couple more years

(05:22):
of doing that.
I was brought on to the meateater team.
In a more recently cohostedpodcast, gear Talk with Yannis
that was on the meat eaternetwork.
It's still up.
There's a few episodes on therethat you can listen to and we
loved it, but gear definitelyhas a visual aspect to it.
So that's really what we wantedto do and that's really why I'm

(05:44):
here today trying to start thisthing up myself.
And one thing I wanted to bringup real quickly with just gear
in general is that, while it isawesome, your experience and
time in the field is going tobring you probably arguably the
most success.
Good gear is going to make youstay out there longer a little

(06:08):
bit more comfortable, probablybut time in the field is
undoubtedly probably the mostimportant.
So I literally came up with atagline while I was in Nebraska
on the ranch last month in atractor Gear is great,
experience is key.
So boots on the ground in thefield, like learning your areas,

(06:29):
learning your behaviors oranimal behaviors, is going to
contribute a large amount ofyour success in the field.
So don't take new gearpurchases.
Don't let them take up all yourgas money.
Good equipment is going to giveyou comfort and let you stay
longer, but it's not going toreplace your knowledge.

(06:52):
So, and oh yeah, something Iforgot to mention earlier was
the outfit that we also have inNebraska.
So back in high school Istarted an outfitting business
on the family ranch calledRunning Water Hunting.
A few twists and turns throughthe years aside, we now offer
fully guided hunts in Nebraskamostly for we have Whitetail, we

(07:14):
have a little bit of mule deerhunting as well, merriam's
turkeys if you're a Nebraskaresident and you're putting in
for elk, we do have elk in Unit9.
And you can actually catch anepisode we did with Stephen Clay
hunting deer a couple years agoon the meat eater TV show on
season 11.
So I have a lot of irons in thefire in the industry and

(07:36):
luckily that lets me spend a lotof time in the field, from the
mountains of Idaho to thesandhills of Nebraska, guiding,
and allows me to try a ton ofdifferent products and a ton of
different scenarios.
And my goal with this podcastis to kind of dig through what
I've used, kind of my evolutionof gear, share some of my
experiences, pick the brains ofother folks that are in the

(07:59):
industry or just out of theindustry and hunt a lot that
make the equipment and I hopethat I can help folks just have
a better experience in the field.
The first episode coming up isgoing to be a gear breakdown of
my first hunt of the year afterearly season mule deer down in

(08:22):
Utah.
So tune in for that episode.
Next, if you have any questionsor if you'd like to have any of
my questions answered, or if youhave any suggestions on topics
to cover, on things that youwant to hear, I have a couple of
super cool options lined up foryou.
So kind of the landing page ofthis thing is going to be the

(08:42):
website Jordan dash bud BUDD,which is going to serve as the
landing page, and then in thereyou can like submit a message
just like via email, or you cando something super cool, I think
you can submit a video messagevia voicemail and then I can
play it on here.
You can get a little bit of avoice time on the podcast and

(09:06):
then I can answer the questionor bring somebody on the can.
And another good way to get ahold of me is just Instagram.
At Jordan dot bud, on Instagramyou can shoot me a DM and I can
throw it into the queue forquestions to answer.
I plan on do some question andanswer podcasts, I just think
you know then the listener, likeyou guys, can really steer the

(09:29):
conversation like how you want, how you want it, like what you
want to know, things you want tolisten to.
So with that, thanks for tuningin to the pilot episode of
Jordan's toolkit and I'll lookforward to bringing you some
more content.
