This episode is dedicated to digging all of your gear out and making sure it's ready to go for season. I have a bear hunt in Wyoming coming up later this week and have been double checking all of my tents, putting new batteries in everything I can find and making sure I have tools and gear ready for the mountains. In today's episode I run through my whole gear list for the hunt, what I make sure to have in my vehicles and what I've screwed up in the past.

Also an update on my upcoming elk film with MeatEater and an update to Running Water Hunting.

SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
what's up everyone welcome back to the running wire
podcast jordan budd here and inthis episode for the bulk of it
i want to talk about an upcomingbear hunt and some of the gear

(00:20):
some of like the pre-seasonchecklist type stuff that i'm
doing to get ready for it Uh, ofcourse, like as the fall ended
last year and we like get intoguiding, there's kind of gear
strung all over, you know, between like in different totes
and things aren't exactly asorganized as they could be.

(00:41):
So it's always fun in thespringtime, getting that stuff
back out and trying to get itorganized and especially trying
to find it before a mountainhunt like this.
So I'm going to Wyoming.
I'm hunting with my buddy, JaneBales.
Um, He knows bears way betterthan I do, and I actually
haven't bear hunted that much.
So really looking forward tolearning some stuff from him and

(01:07):
just getting out and about andgetting the season kicked off.
We are filming this for MeatEater.
This will be one of my MeatEater films eventually.
I'm not sure when they're goingto get it done.
Probably end of this year orbeginning of next year, just
with how things...
work in the queue.
So yeah, it's going to be,that's going to be awesome.

(01:31):
And a little more like update onsome meteor films.
I have my Nebraska elk hunt isgetting worked on right now.
I've seen a couple of cuts andit's going to be awesome.
I'm super excited for everybodyto see that, just that kind of
whole process, how it worked tome.
It was really special to mebecause it's you know, a very

(01:54):
limited tag for Nebraska.
It's residents only.
I got to sneak into it, into theland owner pool because of the
ranch.
And so got that tag.
And I, I'm pretty sure that wedid a whole podcast talking
about kind of the whole storyand how it worked out.
But the, if you want to go backand listen to it to get some

(02:16):
more details, you can, if not,the basic cliff notes, um, are
I, I drew this tag.
It's very limited tag, veryspecial to me because of course
it's on the ranch and we havenot had elk forever.
Um, when I was a kid, we neversaw elk.
And then when we started to, youknow, it was like a huge treat.
I always thought I was going tohave to go out West to hunt elk.

(02:36):
And all of a sudden we have, andI did first, like I've killed
bulls, Wyoming, Arizona.
Um, but I had never, you know, just be just trying to draw a
tag here.
It was like super long shot forresidents.
It's, it's once in a lifetime.
Um, again, like I got to sneakin with it on a landowner, so

(02:58):
that's not once in a lifetime,but there is a, I think it's a
five-year waiting period beforeyou can start applying for it
again.
So anyways, um, yeah, I've gotthis tag, um, Never thought I'd
be able to hunt elk here.
And here I am hunting elk.
And, uh, the year previous tothat, when I was guiding my
brother-in-law actually had atag and I had, you know, like my

(03:21):
reveal cell cam trail cam set upeverywhere.
I think I was running like 30some cameras had a pretty good
inventory of what we had forbulls.
And then literally we go out toglass the night before and this
new bull, uh, Pops upimmediately.
Bugle in his head off.
Gigantic bull.

(03:42):
Tons of mass, especially on histop.
It carries it all the waythrough his tops.
And so that's the bull we weregoing to try to get.
Didn't end up that way.
Brandon shot a different bull.
And then I had a little bit of abreak before the next clients
came in.
And Leah and I actually went outto scout.

(04:03):
And we had this bull at 70yards.
Bugling his face off.
Got some fantastic video of him.
And he ended up moving off.
I didn't see him again for therest of the year.
The client shot a different bigbull, which was good as always.
And this bull that I ended upkilling this last year...

(04:29):
Later on that year, I got onepicture of him later season
after season had ended.
It was in like December orsomething like that.
But then I went out about now, probably springtime.
I'm not like a huge shed hunter, but it's especially for elk.
It always intrigues me to go outand try to pick up sheds from

(04:49):
bulls that we've had picturesof.
And I actually picked up hismatching set on the ranch, like
did not think that that wouldhappen.
So I have this matching set.
And I'm like, I'll probablynever see this bull again.
Well, I'm trying to keep thiscliff notey, but, um, so anyway,
the year that comes, I draw atag, super stoked, get all my

(05:12):
trail cameras set out.
Don't get one picture of him, have a pretty good inventory of
what I've got going on.
Like two days before season, arifle season opens.
I get a bugling video of him inthe middle of the night.
Show up.
He looks exactly like he did theyear before.
He's got this cool, like, flameythrower point thing off of his

(05:37):
swords.
And he's just, like, a supercool bull.
And I'm like, oh, God.
Like, he showed back up.
I might actually have a shot atthis bull.
I never saw him on the hoof.
Never had another picture ofhim.
And ended up killing him, like, three days later, four days
later from that picture.
He was always in the area,but...

(05:59):
um, hunting a lot of likeliteral cornfields.
Um, it's like a rainforest intheir jungle.
You cannot go into the corn.
You got to get them out andended up pulling it off.
So, uh, super cool bull.
He ended up, he's a mid threeseventies bull.

(06:21):
Uh, I scored him a couple oftimes at three 75.
My buddy Cole scored him atthree 77.
He's like, you got to keep withthe bigger numbers, but, um, big
bowl, have some history withthem.
It's going to be awesome.
Um, I will certainly talk aboutthat and like through my
Instagram or whatever, I'll talkabout that bull more as we get
closer to when that thing isgoing to launch.

(06:43):
I would say like early summer, which we're almost there.
So yeah, it'll be super fun.
So, um, that is update, uh,other update with the ranch.
I mean, we are, uh, We'rebooking right now for turkey
season next year.
If you want to get in on it, Ido have some spots left, but

(07:04):
we're rolling over some repeatsfrom this year.
And then we already had somepeople book, so I don't have a
ton of spots left.
But if you're interested inturkey hunting, shoot me a
message.
We can get you hooked up forthis next year.
This year, things went prettywell.

(07:25):
Let me see.
I had seven.
We had seven clients, six of theseven tagged.
It was a strange year.
I'll go into it in a differentpodcast.
But it seems like we had anearly spring.
The winter was warm for the mostpart.
It's been a warm spring.

(07:47):
We literally haven't gotten...
I bet you year to date frombeginning of the year to now
with snow and the rain thatwe've got, we...
maybe totaling like two inches, which is horrible.
Um, which is like a whole, wholenother subject with cows and
ranch stuff.
But I think that, uh, theturkeys were early as well.

(08:08):
It seemed like last year when wewere like hunting right around
the opener of shotgun, which islike the second Saturday in
April, I think it, uh, a lot ofthe birds were still grouped up
and it was tough to get thosetoms to pull away.
Um, This year, it seemed likeright around the opening when we

(08:28):
were hunting, they were a bitmore responsive.
And then it also seemed like itshut off quicker.
It seemed like those hens weregoing to sit on their nest
quicker, which should correlatein my mind to Tom's really
responding more.
But one thing we did have, wehave a literal metric ton of

(08:49):
jakes around.
And calling to those...
single toms at all with any kindof like aggression.
They just thought it was a jigand they would just run away.
So, um, the name of the gamelater on this year would have
been sitting in a blind withlike one hen decoy out and

(09:12):
softly, softly calling onceevery 20 minutes, once every 40
minutes, whatever.
And you're just going to have towait them out, which is tough
for people to do.
to sit and like hang out um soyou're tempted to like go try to
get in front of them and stuffand turkeys are just so like
they're driving nuts i reallydon't like them very much um but

(09:35):
we'll get into that in adifferent one so for yeah this
episode we're going to dive intothe bear hunt and just some
basic like pre-season checklistytype stuff i'm doing gonna go
through a gear list i'm gonnatry to keep it not too long and
drawn out and explainy um those,uh, the, the super explaining
ones and intricate ones can gofor, um, another, another

(09:59):
episode kind of on specificitems on here.
But first up pre seasonchecklist, obviously find all of
your stuff.
One thing I like to do withshelters, especially get those
things pitched and make surethat, uh, you don't remember
there was any spots you neededto like touch up on seam seal,

(10:19):
but especially make sure thatthat all of your stakes are
there and you're not missing anystakes.
Add to it if needed.
If there's any repairs you needto make, get that stuff done and
just get it ready for when youget in the field and you're
tired and it's raining and it'swindy, whatever.

(10:41):
You make sure you have all yourstuff there all packaged up as
far as your shelter goes to getthat whipped up and get you some
some blockage from the elements.
So that's one of the firstthings I would say to do.
And then the second one, I mean, most of the stuff I have kind of
has to do with the electronics.
So obviously make sure all yourstuff is charged, but I would

(11:05):
make sure that everything isupdated as well, especially
through your phone andeverything's talking to each
other.
So what I have down here for meis Onyx.
Make sure I go through andupdate my Onyx app.
and then make sure I have themap downloaded to the area that
I'm going.
Um, depending kind of on whatI'm doing, I have a couple of

(11:28):
different methods for this.
I go, usually go on, I go with,um, like the low detail, the
largest map you can get and justdo one of like the entire unit
if you can, or the entire areathat you're going to probably be
in that will make sure that likeall the road layers and stuff
like that are saved.
So, you know, worst casescenario, you're like, I'm

(11:50):
freaking lost.
You can have the whole thingpulled up.
So even though it's low detail, you still got all your roads and
stuff and you can, you should beable to manage to find yourself
with that.
Um, and then I, from the largeone, I go to the super detailed
one and that is where I willsnapshot like and download like

(12:13):
a certain Canyon that I'm goinginto.
Um, a certain cluster of pins.
And then you can do multiples ofthose and make it so you have
like the most high detailedmaps.
For this, because I have Jadenwith me and he knows the area
and it's not like it that big ofan area.
I did just one medium that cando the whole area.

(12:34):
It's kind of medium, mediumdefinition.
Like I don't need to know wherethis one little tree is on the
side of the hill, probably.
Hope I don't.
But it still gives me decentdetail, still includes all the
roads, and gets me the wholeunit in one map, which I kind of

(12:55):
like.
So make sure you do that.
And I would not update anythingright before you go.
I mean, I'm a week in advancehere just to make sure
everything's going to workcorrectly.
Update the app for the GarmininReach.
I think mine is the Explorerbecause I have the inReach Mini

(13:15):
2.
Make sure that is updated andthen make sure that you open it
and it is talking to yourinReach and everything is okay
there.
I've had it before to wherelike, oh man, I forgot to update
my app and I go to update itright before I go up the
mountain.
I lose service.
I get back there and go to openit and it makes me like sign in
or something like that.

(13:35):
And that is...
Because then you're typing withthe side buttons one at a time
on your inReach.
So do that.
And then, of course, like lookat your plan.
A lot of these plans are awesomebecause they're like their
freedom type plans.
You can pause them whenever youwant to.
So we end up pausing them.

(13:56):
And then we get back and we'relike, oh man, I forgot to
unpause it.
We'll get on and just make surethat you have whatever plan is
good.
It's always good to test it aswell.
Just like send your own phone amessage.
Make sure it's getting it.
Send a message back.
Make sure it's getting it.
Then you're all in the clear.
And what else?

(14:16):
Okay, my BDX app.
So I'm a big SIG fan.
My...
like my range finders are SIG.
So they talk to the SIG BDX app.
That's what I input all my datainto.
And then when I go, um, likevalidate all my ballistics,
that's what everything worksthrough.
So I want to make sure thatthing is updated and I want to

(14:39):
make sure it's already likepaired and talking to my range
finder.
Good.
Um, once you get on themountain, you do not need to
pull your phone out and reallyuse it in any manner, but I just
like to make sure it's likeupdated, um, Um, everything
looks good.
So do that.
And then of course, go out andlike validate, double check your

(15:03):
data, make sure you're stillzeroed, make sure you're, you
know, your ballistics are stillgood at distance.
Like it's all basic stuff, but,um, just wanted to mention it.
And then for me, I have a metricton of camera gear, um, Thank

(15:24):
you for watching.
make sure that thing's updated, make sure it's talking to my

(15:44):
camera.
So if I need to like do a shotor something where I'm in it, I
can control it from my phone andI can see a preview.
That's kind of my main deal ismaking sure I can see a preview
and then I can take picturesfrom that camera to my phone.
I can do that all within thatapp.
So I just want to make sure thatthat stuff's updated.
And then, um, what else?

(16:07):
Yeah.
So yeah, my Sony, uh, My, theGoPro quick app.
I can do the same thing.
Talk to my GoPro with my phone.
And here's a fun thing too.
If you have a GoPro and you havea Garmin watch, I have the
Garmin Phoenix eight and I putthe GoPro.
It's like a GoPro remote on yourinReach.

(16:32):
So, or sorry, geez, that wasconfusing.
Okay.
My Garmin watch.
I can put a GoPro remote app onthat that will talk to my GoPro.
So if it's on my head or it'sout somewhere, I can literally
control it from my watch.

(16:53):
They do make Garmin...
They do make remotes for them aswell.
I have one.
It takes a special kind ofcharger.
And do you think I can find thatthing?
No.
So I looked around a little bitand Garmin...
made an app for that, which ispretty sweet control right from
my watch.
So make sure that that stuff isall updated and talking to each

(17:15):
other.
And then, um, drone, like makesure my DJI app is up.
Um, yes, I do take a drone withme.
We do not fly them at all untilafter we're completely done with
the hunt.
And so make sure that's updatedand talking to each other.
And then I also have a sliderthat can work off my phone so I

(17:37):
make sure that app's updated andthen on with batteries and stuff
I mean anything you can thinkthat takes batteries you got to
charge them up headlamps rangefinders so I put new batteries
in my range finder I also makesure I have a good battery
anyways that's a spare so I'vegot that my headlamps all of

(18:03):
them are rechargeable now I'vemoved completely to rechargeable
those capabilities have gottenway better in the, uh, lately.
So, um, let's see what I've gothere.
So I have the black diamond, thestorm are, which is the, the
storm.
I'm pretty sure is like theirhighest lumens that don't have
like a external battery packdaily attached to them.

(18:26):
Um, and then the R is forrechargeable.
So that takes a mini, uh, usbwhich drives me nuts i which i
wish like i'm in the process oftaking everything over to usbc
because like everything is goingthat direction i have so many
usbc cables so um that one andthen a petzel um the petzel not

(18:49):
the elite the petzel actic corei really like those ones because
You actually charge the batteryitself.
Like the battery itself has amini USB port on it.
So you can have like multiplebatteries that are charged and

(19:10):
then swap them like back andforth as you needed.
So it's not just like aninternal battery that stays and
once it's dead, it's dead.
And then the Petzl Actic Core, you can actually take that
little battery pack out and putAAAs in it, which that's huge.
Um, I would do that one overthis black diamond just for that

(19:33):
reason.
Um, but I do have a blackdiamond that I'm recharging just
like, so I have another headlampjust kind of around and yeah.
So range finder, what else?
My, uh, my stair pin also takesbatteries and it's the stair pin
adventure.
So they take like CR one 23s.

(19:53):
So make sure you have those.
But in my experience, like if Iput new batteries in at the
beginning of the season, likeI'm good with those things
through the season, but I willhave backups like in the vehicle
just in case I go down.
So that's like kind of some ofthe basic ones that's for like a
checklist.
Like, you know, you should dothe, all the basic stuff like,

(20:14):
well, I would say well inadvance, like at least a week in
advance, if not maybe a littlebit longer, just so you have
time to order stuff and for itto get to you to like repair or,
rebuild some of your kit stuff.
Like I'll go through my backpackand like make sure all the
pockets are on it that I like.

(20:35):
And I didn't take them off andput them on something else
during like a smaller bag when Iwas guiding or whatever.
So just make sure, you know, allthat stuff is rolling.
All right.
So with that, I'll just likedive, uh, dive right into the
gear list.
So, uh, like a couple of bagsthat I really like using, um,

(20:56):
FHF gear just came out with acouple, well, they have some
duffel bags coming.
I think one of them is out rightnow, the 60 liter.
And I have a couple of those andthat duffel bag design is
probably the best duffel bagdesign I've ever seen.
It like It zips and then you canclip the sides down.
So it still remains prettysmall.

(21:18):
But then when you unclip thesides and unzip it, it literally
turns into a huge hole.
So like you can really open itup and like see everything in
there.
And it's the best duffel bagdesign truly I've ever seen in
my life.
And so taking a couple of thosebecause they are, they're like

(21:39):
waterproof or at least waterresistant.
I think that the zipper iswaterproof though.
Um, something to check on, butthose are awesome.
And then like those Yeti Pangawaterproof bags, I take those
too.
So, um, quick, I guess this isnot, this is, we don't really
know what this hunt's going tobe yet.

(22:01):
It could be a camping at the endof a road and doing kind of a
base camp and just day hikingout of there, or, um, it could
turn into a backpack hunt.
So keep that in mind as I gothrough this.
I'm kind of pretty versatile.
Like some of the stuff I'mtaking, like I'm bringing a
small cot, which I wouldn'tbackpack with, but I'll put it

(22:22):
in a side-by-side to take it tothe end of a road.
So, um, keep that in mind as wedo this, like that's going to be
coming.
Like I'll go through some of thevehicle can-am type stuff, but
like definitely taking mydefender because I I love that
thing and is so handy for stufflike this saves wear and tear on
your, your good vehicles and youcan just rip down a road so much

(22:45):
quicker.
So I'm going to take that forsure.
And I think we're going to beusing it a bit.
So anyways, back to, yeah, duffel bags.
So that's why I was talkingabout it.
I can shove like all the campingstuff in one of those duffel
bags and throw it in the back ofside by side.
I just don't got to worry aboutit.

(23:05):
So going to do that.
Um, clothing, obviously, uh, allfirst light clothing.
I've got, you do have to wearorange in Wyoming.
So I've got my SIG orange hat, just a ball cap.
And then I do have, I think it'sthe first light, the furnace
beanie, which is an awesomebeanie.
Love it.
And so that's what I'll do fororange and kind of my headwear.

(23:29):
And then otherwise 308 pantsstaple, got to have them.
I'll take, uh, the wick, uh,three quarter base layer Merino
bottoms to put underneath if Ineed.
And then, um, the new all seasonMerino wool socks, um, from
first light.
I talked about those before, butthose are like they're USA made

(23:52):
socks, which you have to love.
And then of course I'll havepuffy pants and then I'll have,
uh, the, I'll have rain pants aswell.
Probably going to end up beingthe omen rain pants, the heavy
ones.
It's supposed to rain.
a whole bunch, which is, doesnot make me super happy, but
it'll be fine.
And, uh, for tops like rainjacket, again, probably going to

(24:16):
be the omen might be a new one,um, that I've been wearing.
And then I just can't talk aboutit yet.
And then my basics, wick hoodie,or I don't think it's going to
be hot.
I did throw in a wick teet-shirt.
I don't think it's going to becold enough.
I'm just going to do wickhoodie.

(24:36):
Um, the new navigator hoodie.
I love that thing.
Um, people, they let us wearthem, but, uh, people were
asking me about it literally allthe time.
And I just couldn't like saywhat it was called, but, uh, now
I can, cause it's out thenavigator hoodie.
It's literally like for everydaywear plus like any of the
hunting stuff.

(24:57):
Um, it's a higher performancehoodie.
It's awesome.
So that, um, probably like aBrooks down vest, just knowing
what our temperatures are goingto be like.
And then, uh, the new suppressorshop, a soft shell jacket.
I'll bring that.
There's also a vest.
I'll bring two that I might swapoff with the Brooks, just
depending on what our temps endup being.
And then the Ankh foundryjacket, which the cool thing

(25:21):
about the Ankh foundry jacket isif it's going to be cold and
we're sitting, it's going to bealso be raining all the time.
I don't have to put a rainjacket over the top of that.
I can just take it.
And then of course, like I willbring a puffy jacket, probably
just the unc jacket and swapkind of with the, the foundry as

(25:42):
I need.
But if I were going to, if we'regoing to backpack in, like that
is what I'm taking is what Ijust went through.
The wick hoodie, navigatorhoodie, um, the Brooks vest,
probably still the suppressorsoft shell just because of, um,
I don't know because I like it.

(26:03):
It's comfy.
And then the Ankh Foundryjacket.
That's what I'd be taking.
And for boots, going to do theCrispy Brickstool EFX boot.
That's a new boot for this year, but it's basically just your
standard non-insulatedBrickstool leather.
The best boot ever invented.

(26:24):
is what it is.
There's a tons of variations onthat Brixton line.
Now they have a new Alpine pro, which looks awesome.
It's a super stiff flex.
That'd be for, you know, roughhigh country mule deer, um,
sheep go stuff like that.
Anybody that just kind ofprefers a stiffer boot.
I prefer stiffer boot.

(26:45):
Um, I, you know, I haven't hadissues with this now that I'm
looking at my ankle in a while, but I rolled my ankle real, real
bad.
Um, when I was filming fortelevision and, um, stiff boots
really seemed to help me nottweak that, but I just kind of
noticed this last year.
I didn't really notice it, buttruly like it's been a problem

(27:09):
for 10 years.
Um, but the stiff boots kind ofhelped that.
So anyways, yeah, the BristolEFX boot gonna take that bad
boy.
I did not put gators down.
Um, I'm going to take them, butI just don't like them.
I just don't like gators ingeneral.
Um, but I'm going to take thembecause it is supposed to be wet

(27:30):
and they do certainly help whenit is conditioned such as that.
So that's clothing.
That'll wrap up clothing for themost part.
Um, pack doing the, uh, trusteefar duplex frame.
I love that thing.
And I got a new, new bag fromKefaru that I'm going to be
doing a review on for rock slidethat I'm going to be wearing on

(27:51):
this trip.
And then sleep system.
So for a tent, like I said,we're probably going to be doing
like some tent camping, kind ofroadside camping type stuff.
We might even just throweverything in the side-by-side
and burn down to the end of aroad.
So for that, I just got theArgali six-person, the cell

(28:12):
weight tent.
And I set it up in the yard theother day and it is...
Very spacious.
I got the half...
I actually think it comes withthis stuff, but the main tent, a
half insert, which will be afloor and netting, which will be
good for ticks.
If there's ticks around, yuck.
And then...
What else?

(28:36):
Yeah, take the titanium stove...
for sure um that thing's alwaysnice and then there's just so
much room in for that like leahand i can stay in the tent and
then i mean jayden can stay inthere too if he wants or like
that could just be kind of likethe hangout we can have a fire
the whole nine so i like thatbut yeah so half insert and then

(28:58):
the liners to help a little bitwith condensation especially
with that new and upcoming greengrass if we're going to be
camped on that condensation canbe a a sucker.
So going to take that.
But also if I end up doing a, ifwe end up backpacking in, I've
got, um, the trustee, our gollyfour person tent with that half

(29:22):
insert.
And that's what we wouldbackpack in with.
Okay.
Um, cooking stuff going to takethe MSR reactor, um, Love that
stove.
Um, especially for like multiplepeople just like boil so fast.
It's a little bit bigger pot.
So take that.
And then just, we're doing justbasic peak refuel meals, basic

(29:45):
snacks, drink mixes, and all thethings, um, instant coffee.
Of course, we'll take some teaas well.
And for those, I'm going totake, um, I'm going to throw in,
like, we usually do the littleGSI backpacking.
um, like ultra light cups andwe'll do that if we backpack in,
but if not, like don't screwaround, just take some Yeti cups

(30:10):
of some kind, just keep stuffwarmer for so much longer.
And if we ended up backpackingin, I'm also going to take like
my MSR pocket rocket deluxe withtitanium cup.
Um, I did a video, I should doanother video and talk about
that little kit more, but thatthing is so light.
I mean, you're talking without acup or without like a little

(30:35):
four ounce canister of fuel, just the stove and that cup.
I mean, I'm at like four ouncesor five ounces for the whole
thing.
It's unreal.
So that's nice to backpack in oreven just take it with you.
Like these are going to be latenights.
So just take it with you, eatdinner on the mountain, have

(30:57):
some coffee up there.
It's just light and compactenough to do that with.
For water stuff, just using mepersonally anyway, I'm just
going to use Nalgene bottles orthe Yeti Yonder bottle.
I really like the Yeti's versionof a Nalgene because all these

(31:19):
Nalgene pockets for these packsare all made so the Nalgene
snugly fits in.
Well, the Yonder bottles arejust a smidgen smaller not as
round as that, not as big roundwise.
And so they slide in and out ofthis water bottle deals way
easier.
So like that.

(31:40):
And where am I at here?
Okay.
Yeah.
And then I'll do like a stairpen for treating water.
Um, springtime it's running off.
Like I would imagine there'sample water kind of everywhere.
So I think that that will workgood.
Um, And then I just put newbatteries in that as I have

(32:00):
marked here to make sure I did.
And I did.
And then if we do backpack in, Ihave an MSR 10 liter water
bladder that has a gravity flowfilter on it that I really like.
And then also if we're justgoing to do camping, like
roadside stuff, just like bigplastic water jugs.

(32:24):
And I'll probably just buy acase of water too, just because.
for that kind of stuff.
Um, okay.
Optics, um, obviously like bigSIG fan.
I think I've, um, I think maybeI said that already in this
thing, but yeah, big SIG fan.
So running all their stuff, uh,the Zulu 10, 10 by 42

(32:45):
binoculars, um, fantasticbinocular.
Um, I have the outdoorsman studso I can put it on the bino post
and put it on my, my tripod.
Um, So I've got that.
I'm going to run the Kilo 8Krange finder, which I have a new
battery in and an extra battery.
And then the Oscar 8, the 80millimeter spotter.

(33:05):
Love just having a spotter ingeneral, but for filming
purposes, filming through it ishuge.
And so I do that with just myiPhone and the all-in
digiscoping adapter.
So I have the all-in case on it.
And then the spotting scope hasthe adapter on the eyepiece.
And literally, if you haven'tseen one of those things yet,

(33:27):
it's a magnet and it literallymagnets to it, um, to your
phone.
So it's like a perfect alignmentevery time it's so easy.
And I love it a lot.
Um, so if you're looking to filmthrough scope, that's the way to
do it.
And then, uh, for a tripod, I'musing the outdoorsman's, the
carbon tripod, uh, standard, andI'm using the outdoorsman's pan

(33:50):
head 2.0, uh, as well, whichI've been using the pan head
from them forever.
I love it.
It's compact, still holds a lotof weight, especially the new
2.0 holds way more weight thanthe old one did.
And the 2.0 has the ability todo the outdoorsman's plate or
the ARCA.
And you can do them likeliterally the same time, like

(34:12):
you can, the head has both ofthem built into it, which I
really like.
Um, for, I mean, just ARCA ingeneral, like all my camera
stuff is ARCA.
All of, um, my spotting scopestuff kind of for the most part
is the outdoorsman's plate, butI am using a new system from all

(34:34):
in called the Nexus, um,adapters.
And basically they're like quickadapters for your spotting
scope, tripod cameras, whateveryou want to put on them.
Um, it's like a magnet, um, likemagnets down and you twist it on
to lock and then it's on thereforever or not forever but you

(34:55):
know what i mean it's like seton there and it's awesome i
think especially if you havelike a group of people or a
couple different people thathave different heads that they
really like but maybe they don'tmesh like um some of like the
camera only heads that i use arelike siriu makes them or siru or

(35:16):
however you say it and thenthose are like all arca and then
i use the outdoorsman's for allmy hunting stuff um and then
that has outdoorsman's plate orlike now the arca which is nice
but before when i only had theoutdoorsman's plate you there's
a compatibility issue and ithink people that run in groups

(35:36):
and stuff and hunt together allthe time run into that everybody
has their own preference for ahead but they all might take a
different plate And then youcan't interchange scopes.
Like I can't throw my scope toLeah and be like, yo, look at
this with through this scope orwhatever.
Cause she'll be like, ah, Ican't use it.
It won't work.
Um, this Nexus system, it's likequicker to put it on, but then

(36:00):
it's also going to standardizelike everybody's tripods, which
is what it's done for me.
It's standardized everythingfrom the cameras to the scopes
and then through all the heads.
And then I can, put them all on,which, um, like we can
interchange and use each other'sscopes and whatever.
And it just works pretty damngood.

(36:21):
So you can, yeah, look at that.
If you're interested, that's,that's a new thing that that's
why I talked about it more isbecause it's new.
Okay.
Then rifle setup.
So run the SIG cross as usual, six, five Creedmoor.
My cross, it is standard, uh,Um, but we did put a 20 inch

(36:42):
proof research barrel on it,which is awesome.
Carbon fiber.
And so, yeah, running six, fiveCreedmoor.
Um, I'm running the Sig EliteHunter, like the box ammunition,
but it is, there are 140 grainacubons.
Um, I just looked at, I need togo re-zero and re-data my rifle

(37:02):
for this.
Cause I've been running the onethirties in it this last year.
But, um, last time I wasrunning, um, the one forties
through it, I was running at 2580 for my feet per second
velocity.
And so there's that, um, withthe gun, I did add a salmon
river solutions, a full lengthArca.

(37:24):
And then at the very end, itgoes to a Picatinny rail.
It's all one piece ultra light, just like put it on there with M
locks and it's legit.
I can run, I can put my gun onmy tripod cause my tripod is has
the Arca, which is sweet.
And then I can have my bipod inthe end.

(37:45):
And it's just, yeah, it works, works really well.
I like that.
And then for my bipod, I'm goingto run the Atlas.
I love that thing.
And then I am taking a newultralight rear bag coming from
an awesome company.
You've heard from me talk abouta lot, but I love it.
And shooting suppressed, ofcourse, we've got a six

(38:06):
suppressor on there.
And then the, soft case from FHFgear I have it I did a video on
this a while back on myInstagram but I literally have
it on it's inside my can-am likebehind my head kind of attached
back there slide my rifle in andout of it keeps it out of the

(38:27):
gunk keeps it out of from wherewe're all going to be so that is
my rifle system trying to thinkI just don't think that oh the
scope jeez What are you doing,Jordan?
The Tango DMR scope is what I'mrunning on it.
318.
Love that power range.

(38:47):
I have a sniper level on it aswell for leveling.
So yeah, I think that coversthat.
And then bino harness, the FHFfob.
I've been running that.
It's a forward opening magneticbino harness.

(39:07):
I love the design of it.
I would like to think, I mean, they did ask me some things
about bino harnesses and I putmy two cents in and I would like
to think that that transferredover into a couple of things
that they've got on this thing, but they just came out with the
black one.
I have had, I literally own onefob harness.
Leah has one, but I have onethat I got.

(39:31):
It's a it's the pre-productionprototype one that I got like
maybe a year in advance of themcoming out.
And I've still been running thatfor, I don't know, they've been
out for a couple of years andI've been running that thing and
I love it so much, but then theyjust came out with a new color
black and I was like, gotta haveit.
I mean, the black just lookspretty sweet.

(39:53):
So, um, yeah, so I've got the,the harness that holds the binos
and then you can put thesethings, they call wings.
on the side of them that makethem, um, so you can attach like
different pockets and stuffpretty easily.
So I have, what am I doing here?
Okay.
Uh, so I have my range finderpocket on my right side and then

(40:16):
also on the right side, but onthe vinyl harness on the right
side is the, um, three roundrifle holder, which is nice just
for like, you know, you havelose mag or you need to single
feed or whatever, you've gotthree rounds right there with
you all the time.
And then on my left wing, I havethe E3 pocket, which is
basically just like a possiblespocket.

(40:39):
Um, I've got my wind checker inthere.
I have my outdoorsman's bino,um, the, the adapters that my
binos go into.
So I can put them on my tripodand I have a little, like just a
little Phelps diaphragm call.
You literally, you can doanything with those things.
You can make any noises.
And sometimes it's better, in myopinion, to make a natural noise

(41:04):
versus making, saying, yelling, hey, which I've done multiple,
multiple times.
It's just yell, hey, to makethem stop or to do something.
Yeah, that's where I keep myextra range finder battery.
And then I do have my headlampin there.
my headlamp never ends upstaying in there though.
It, uh, always usually ends upmaking it into my pants pocket

(41:27):
or I just throw it in the lid ofmy pack.
So there's that.
And then, yeah, on the left sideas well, attached to the vinyl
harness is the, uh, theirsidekick pouch, but it literally
fits an inReach mini perfectly.
So that's, what's in there is myinReach.
And then, uh, they just came outwith this cool new thing.

(41:48):
It's a foam pocket, uh, So it'sa pocket you can slide your
phone into obviously, but itgoes behind that E3 pocket.
It will go behind any pocket.
But I put mine behind the E3pocket.
Just it's a little more slimmerthat way instead of putting it
by my range finder.
And so I can put my phone overthere, which is good.
They also like have the slotbehind the vinyl harness, like

(42:12):
behind where you'd put your inthe back of your harness that a
phone will slip into easy.
I use that sometimes too.
I use them both.
And then the front pockets, likea front zippered stretchy
pocket.
In the front, I have my tags, alighter chapstick, and then I
have a mini scalpel knife thatlike literally tiny.

(42:37):
And then inside the pocket orthe little folding thing with
all my tags in it, I put acouple extra scalpels.
And that's just...
I like having that.
It's, it's nice to have thattiny little sharp sucker for,
um, like even if you get likestickers or something just to
have like a mini scalpel bladeskind of nice.

(42:58):
So you're not using a knife thatyou just like, you know, cut a
stick with or whatever.
And so that's a good reason tohave it.
And then second reason, it'sreally nice for like doing the
head of an animal.
It's nice having that littlescalpel.

UNKNOWN (43:14):
Um,

SPEAKER_00 (43:15):
And then, uh, I do have the, because we're going
into, there are grizzly bearsaround and it's bear hunt.
So I do have bear spray and Iput that on the bottom of the
pack.
One thing I like about that is Iface it to the right.
And then the bottle, the spraypart is actually spraying.

(43:35):
It's going to spray likeforward.
So that's the way it is.
And then it's on my right side.
Cause that's my dominant hand.
So I can flip the, thing off andi can literally spray it from
the pocket i don't have to takeit out so that that's something
to think about as well as likehow you have that thing set up
and is it usable and i'm alsobringing a gun um i am going to

(44:01):
bring the um i have a sig x10comp um So it has a compensator
on the front.
It's also compact.
It's a little bit more compact, shorter barrel than the standard
X10.
Holds 15 rounds.
That's a lot for a 10 mil, Ifeel like.
And I do have a Romeo X-Pro RedDot on it.

(44:23):
And that also has backup sights.
It has rear sight um, built in.
So you can see your front sites, which is, um, nice shooting the
220.
I'm pretty sure they're 220grain.
Um, they're the Buffalo borehard cast.
And I'm running that in aNorthwest retention chest

(44:44):
holster.
I'm a big fan of those chestholsters because, um, oftentimes
I sit down and take my vinylharness off.
If we're going to be sitting fora long time, or you're doing
stuff around camp, you take yourvinyl harness off.
So you're going to have, um, Soyou don't have it out there.
And then you, if you havesomething attached to your bino
harness and you take, then you, you're taking your gun off.

(45:06):
But, um, FHF, they came out withlike a new kind of new idea for
a, a, a pistol system on yourbino harness and, um, you can
change it to wherever you want.
So it's kind of a, it's a quickdetach system that, I'm going to
try to explain it, but you'lljust have to like get on and

(45:28):
kind of see how it works.
So there's like a tacticalcompany that uses, they use
discs.
So it's basically a disc is likeyour adapter that goes into,
let's say like a receiver, thereceiving end of the adapter can
be put on literally anything inkind of any sort of mounting

(45:53):
way.
So basically what you can do isyou can have whatever holster
you already have, you can putthe, this disc on it.
And I mean, these Kydexholsters, like if you don't have
holes for it, you can go screwor you can go drill some holes
in it.
Like that's literally what I didfor Leah's, um, X10 to, to have

(46:16):
it all set up for her.
Um, So you put this disc onwhatever Kydex holster you
already have for your gun, andthen you can then take the
receiving end of that adapter, and you can have multiple of
those receiving end adapters toput wherever you want.
You could have one on your packbelt.

(46:37):
You could have one on this FHFsystem of being under your bino
harness.
You can put one, like you canhave one for your hip belt or
for your like belt belt, notyour hip belt, but your, like
your belt that you have.
There's a tons of different onesthat you can get.
And with that disc, you canbounce between all of them.
So the idea being like, allright, you know, I am, you know,

(47:02):
hiking a bunch with my pack on,like I'm going to put my gun on
my pack belt.
So you've got it there.
And then like, oh, I'm going totake my pack off and I'm going
to go Sit down in glass, take itoff your hip belt and it slides
right into the system that's onyour bino harness.
Or I'm going to take my packbelt off and I have this little
adapter that slides into my pantwaistband.

(47:25):
Like you can put it there.
So that system is friggingsweet.
Like being able to change, likeI don't mind having one on my
bino harness, but I just tend totake it off and then I don't
have it.
And I don't mind having one onmy hip belt but then I take my
pack off and then I don't haveit.
So that system is probably oneof the best that I've seen come

(47:49):
out as far as being able to likeput it wherever you want
quickly, easily.
And then like that system isjust, it's good.
You'll just have to check it outif you're interested in it.
Um, okay.
Some, some kind of other thingslike that.
I didn't know where to put them.
Um, so our golly tracking poles,um, Um, our golly game bags.

(48:13):
And then I have a knife fromsome beta custom knives that I
like a lot.
The handle glows.
Um, it is a custom knife andit's, um, gosh, what's the new
fancy steel that everybody likesto run?
Man, it'll come to me, but Idon't, but that's what that

(48:35):
blade is.
And it's just like short.
It's, Freaking sweet.
So, um, the knife, uh, sit likebench made bug out pocket knives
when I always have clipped on,um, sunglasses, of course, got
my hat, um, uh, ear protection.

(48:55):
Like I have a couple differentkinds of ear pro, like even
though I'm shooting suppressed, like there still is a crack.
And especially if I'm at therange or if I have time, I'll
put one in because especiallythose walkers, um, you can, um,
you can hear through them andthey're not like the big Walker.
Like they also make ones thatare like big headphones.

(49:17):
These ones actually, it's like alittle black deal that like goes
around your neck and hangs onyour neck.
And then there's little earbudsthat retract out of that.
And then you can, they'repowered so you can turn it on
and you can, you know, talk topeople and like enhances things.
And then when you shoot, itblocks it out.
So I really like those.

(49:37):
And then, um, Sometimes like Ialso have just like a basic set
of earplugs that like you putthem in hot water and they like
mold to your ear.
So I'll take those sometimestoo.
Um, but obviously those are waymore basic.
I wouldn't be so sad if I lostthem, which is one of the
reasons I use them.
Um, but they, they're notpowered or anything.

(49:58):
They're just basically set atyour pro.
Um, So that, and then a tarp.
I didn't put that in here.
I will take the stone glacier, the flat tarp.
I don't remember how big it is,but it's supposed to rain, which
is unfortunate.
So having that, that I can pitchup with trekking poles and kind

(50:19):
of get everybody under it.
It's nice and get out of therain, especially with camera
gear.
And okay.
Like a possibles first aid kit.
I'm not going to get too deepinto this.
I do carry a tourniquet.
Um, just carry some cordage orsome basic like tenacious tape,
meds, band-aids, simple bandageswith like some neosporin.

(50:40):
Like I can get into all thatlater, but, um, just like, you
know, you got to have it withyou, but keep it basic.
And then, um, charging stuff.
So I have tons of stuff tocharge, so I need cables for all
of it.
So we're talking mini USB,USB-C, iPhone, make sure now

(51:04):
that everything is going likebasic USB or USB-C, make sure
that the receiving end of yourcharger is all correct as well.
It's getting more and moreconfusing, I swear, but yeah,
mini USB, USB-C, iPhone cable, make sure all the cables are
good.
I use those dark energy, justthe 10,000 milliamp packs.

(51:28):
They call them their Poseidonchargers.
I usually take a couple of thosewith a solar panel and then I
can kind of alternate like usingone while the other one charges.
And then they also came outwith, um, a little 3000 charger
that actually is mag safecompatible.
So it can snap to the back ofyour phone.
Um, or it can also just, you cando USB-C to whatever.

(51:51):
Um, but it's really small fitsin my vinyl harness, like in
that E3 pocket, like real easy,um, And then you just have
something to take around withyou all the time.
Um, just like during the day.
And then usually when I get backis when I use the bigger packs
and recharge everything.
But I talked about it before, like I've rechargeable
everything, the headlamps, um,my Garmin watch is rechargeable.

(52:15):
The inReach is rechargeable.
Um, my camera batteries, I havea USB, uh, camera battery
charger, um, I can plug intothose and charge camera
batteries.
I also have some rope lightsfrom Last Light, or I have a
couple of like little lanternlights from Goal Zero as well.

(52:36):
And those are rechargeable.
So all them things.
And then I did put in here too,I do have a Goal Zero, like a
lithium battery pack.
That's like a big, like it has ahandle.
I mean, the thing is, likeyou're obviously not backpacking
with it.
It's, um, quite large, but forrolling in on the side by side

(53:00):
or keeping in a vehicle to likerecharge when you get back, like
they're awesome.
Um, I also have a panel for itso I can set up a panel if we do
like a base camp and we can havepower for years.
Um, and then, so coolers, like Iwill bring a Yeti cooler for
like the bear meat and hide, but, uh, I usually bring like

(53:24):
another cooler that has ice init with like drinks and some
snacks and like, yeah, yada, yada, especially if we're doing,
um, roadside camp.
And we usually bring, we'll tryto do like some kind of like a
frozen meal.
Like if we make spaghetti onenight, we'll just vacuum seal it
and then freeze it.
And then you can warm that backup.

(53:44):
Um, and I usually have all thatin a cooler, but I just got a
Dometic fridge freezer and Andthat thing, it's basically, it's
like the size of a cooler.
Um, the one that I got, I mean, you know, the size of like a,
it's almost like maybe a littleshorter than like a Yeti 110,
but one side's a freezer, oneside's a fridge.

(54:06):
It is a 12 volt system and they,um, I have a battery pack for
that as well.
You could plug that into a goalzero easy.
Um, but you can plug that in oryou can plug it into a solar
panel and it's, So it justeliminates ice, eliminates water
being kind of covered, coveringeverything, and then gives you

(54:29):
the option of a freezer for someof those freezer meals,
especially like if it's going tobe hot, like some of these early
like antelope hunts and stuff.
Like I'm so excited to use thatbecause I can put it literally
in the backseat of the pickup, keep it plugged in.
And then we've got things cooledand then we don't really have to
worry about um, like iceretention for multiple days,

(54:52):
being away from, from any placeto free stuff.
So that Dometic is going to besweet for that.
Um, okay.
So, and I talked about it, liketaking the can defender.
Um, I have like some of thestuff I've done too.
I do have like a toolbox in theback.
It's like a plastic rotomoldedtype thing that has wings on

(55:15):
both sides that open up.
And, um, That's an awesome placeto put kind of everything, all
of like my things that I've got.
So, um, tow rope, bottle Jack,um, you know, like a four way,
what am I doing here?
Yeah.
Just like a, um, a four, a tireiron.
Jeez.

(55:36):
I should just actually read mylist here.
So, um, yeah, so, uh, I've got atow rope that it does have a
winch.
So I do have that going for me,but do you have a tow rope?
to extend that out a little bitand bottle jack, a tire plug
kit, a four-way or, um, yeah, atire iron, um, and avalanche

(55:58):
shovel.
So this is one thing that'spretty cool, like for snow and
stuff, like you want a snowshovel, but those little
avalanche shovels are like, they're just more compact and
they're obviously meant formoving snow.
So, um, those things are handyto have anywhere, like in your
vehicle, in a side-by-side,especially like anything like
that.
And that one that I have it likeactually the shovel or the

(56:21):
handle breaks down.
So it makes it even smaller.
And I mean, hopefully it doesn'tbuckle under shoveling.
But anyways, and then I alsohave like a mini shovel.
I'll probably throw that in justbecause.
And then I've got like a smallaxe.
I've got a DeWalt batterychainsaw.

(56:41):
Bring a couple different likefive amp hour batteries for
that.
A little thing of bar oil forthat.
And yeah, I've got an extra beltfor the side by side along with
like just some like basictoolkit stuff for that.
I have a small fuel can like aRotopax that attaches to my,

(57:04):
it's not a cage, but it's justlike a back rack thing.
I'll talk about that in asecond.
And then, yeah, I do have, Icarry a jump pack with me as
well from Uncharted Supply.
I think they call it a Zeus.
And that's another thing in thepreseason checklist.
Make sure that thing is chargedup, topped off before you go

(57:26):
out.
Because, you know, they sit fora few months and they do kind of
degrade after a while.
But if something happens, Ileave the radio on and the
side-by-side or key on or whoknows what could happen.
Having that battery pack can bedamn handy and they're real
little as well um so yeah so thecan-am and then i put a back

(57:49):
rack on it as well when we go onour hunts or i um i usually do
anyway and basically what thatdoes is it just like puts a rack
back there that gives youanother deck so you'll have like
two decks um we're packing instuff so we're going to be able
to put more stuff back there umas far as camping gear.

(58:11):
And then there's going to bethree of us total.
So it's going to be a littleclampity, but it's going to be
great.
So that's nice for stuff likethat.
And then they literally withtheir system, like you put the
rack on and then there's justlike these quick adapter deals
that lock the thing on.
So it's not like a big job totake it on and put it off to put

(58:32):
it on and take it off.
I should say.
So that's some of the lists Ihave for camping.
the can-am and then, um, takingthe black trailer obviously to
put the can-am in.
And so some things that I have,uh, for the trailer in my
vehicle type stuff, um, some ofthis is, you know, doubles, but

(58:53):
I got a jump pack and then Ialso have jumper cables.
I have a tow rope.
Um, I have a scissor jack and abottle jack in there as well as
the jack that came with thevehicle.
Um, tire iron I also have a dealthey call I think they call it a
monkey wrench and it basicallyis an extendo breaker bar type

(59:16):
thing that comes with um socketsthat they're actually like
double-sided somehow um they'relike double-sided sockets that
it will fit any vehicle and thereason I like those is they're
like deep sockets so basicallyyou know, some of these like
vehicles that have rims that youlike, can't fit a regular tire

(59:41):
iron into, um, cause it's toofat.
These sockets will go into.
So I always like just keepingthem, keeping them with, uh,
yeah.
Toro jacks, tire iron.
Yeah.
Tire plug kit.
Of course.
Um, I do have like a little Dwall air compressor, um, That
will run off 12 volts.
So it'll run off your vehicle orit'll run off the Dewalt

(01:00:02):
batteries as well.
So that thing is always nice tohave.
I do like a full socket set andthen I've got, you know, just
some basic tools.
And WD-40, of course, you haveto have that.
And then I've got gas cans onhere as well.
And then a diesel can.
I have a diesel heater in thatblack trailer so we can fire

(01:00:26):
that thing up.
if we want to warm up a bit soand then there's like some other
basic stuff like with thetrailer that I won't even go
into because we've got like itsown stove and like gotta bring
like a bottle of propane andjust like some things I won't
get into that I gotta do therebut that pretty much wraps it up

(01:00:52):
trying to think of anything thatI've missed I'm sure there's
plenty um But yeah, just tryingto like, I mean, I haven't even
got into all the camera gear.
It's kind of ridiculous, butthat should pretty much cover it
for like my basic list.
Some of the preseason checklistcovered some elk hunting stuff.

(01:01:12):
Some of the Turkey huntingstuff.
Yeah.
I would just say that this iskind of my, this is the, my, the
spring hunt that I have thisyear.
I'm excited to see, get up intothe mountains and, you know, try
some of this new gear out andyeah, just kind of get up there

(01:01:32):
and reset.
We've been real busy thisspring.
Um, calving is, it consumes mefor the month of March and April
and half of February now.
So yeah, got through that.
Luckily we're about to turn, um,Everything's about to get turned

(01:01:54):
on grass and bulls put out andstuff.
So yeah, things are going tostart.
And then we got turkey seasonout of the way now.
So things will start lighting itup for me a bit and I'll be able
to do more videos and just kindof dive in more on my gear stuff
that I love to do.
So more stuff, more stuff comingin.
Uh, if you have any questions, comments, whatever, don't be

(01:02:15):
afraid to reach out either onthe, on the website,

Um, Or through Instagram, that'sgreat.
Facebook, whatever.
