(00:06):
There we go.
Uhhuh, I should be sick andtired of this, this jaunt, this,
this canned music I playpretending that I'm on the
radio, but I actually like it.
It's positive and bouncy makesme feel good about myself and
(00:26):
the world and my place in it.
It will do that for you too.
See?
Feeling it.
All right.
All right.
Hey, this is Scott Temp Pesta.
This is the Sailing Anarchypodcast.
I wanna say number 58.
Let's see.
Yes, 58.
So there you go.
I don't how many more.
(00:46):
Who knows.
I'm just gonna keep'em rolling.
Um, just, uh, by the way, just alittle bit of housekeeping
before I get into our guest whois just.
One of my favorite guys and alltime.
Good dude, great Sailor, SoCallegend.
Um, Keith Kilpatrick is going tojoin us in a few minutes, but
good news.
I think it's good news.
Uh, I'm gonna start doing the,uh, retro boat videos again, so,
(01:10):
uh, yeah.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Of course, I, I wouldn't saythere's actually an outcry.
I, I'd say there's a little cryfor them.
Um, but people.
That like them still rememberand like, yeah dude, get that
started again.
I love those things.
So.
You know, I'm gonna get thosegoing.
They won't be nearly as trickand as slick and as nicely
(01:32):
produced as the other ones were.
But I'm really, who am I, I'mnot deserving of that level of
production quality anyway.
I'm, you know, these are gonnabe dirt bag videos and, um, with
me shooting them and, uh,fortunate enough to have a, uh,
a long time.
Friend who is a retired videoeditor and he's gonna help me
(01:52):
learn how to edit or he said, even better yet, just, I'll just
send me the file and I'll editit.
And I'm like, yeah, that soundsgood to me.
I'll do the shooting and theyapping and, uh, I'll let him do
the, the editing.
So I'm hoping, hoping, hoping, hoping by the end of it is July.
By the end of July this month,I'll, uh, I'll be doing my first
video.
So, so there you go.
(02:13):
Um, what, you're not, not thatinterested really.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Um, let's get to it.
You know, out here in the Westcoast in SoCal got this thing
that happens.
It's a race to Hawaii, uh, everyother year for Transpac, and
then the race to Hawaii fromFrisco is in the opposite year
of that.
So basically there's a race toHawaii, like every three months
(02:34):
out here in, uh, in California.
Um, and Transpac is.
Is and has already started.
And, um, there's one boat inthis.
There's some pretty good boatsin this fleet, like always.
I mean there's, you know, Iwouldn't call it the hugest
fleet, but I'd call it acompetitive fleet and maybe the.
Yeah, I don't think maybe themost famous boat in the race and
(02:58):
a, a boat that's done it a bunchof times before.
It's a, so it's a, it's a NewZealand slash SoCal legend.
The boat is of course ragtime ifyou didn't know that.
And joining me now is KeithKilpatrick, who is going to be
on board Ragtime.
Hey buddy.
Hey there.
How's it going Scott?
Good.
How are you Keith?
I'm doing good.
Yeah, so just thinking, uh,doing the final prep stuff.
(03:20):
And there's, there's a lot ofstuff, right?
There's always, it's a neverending amount of stuff, right?
Yeah.
The thing that, the thing thatworries me is that.
Is complacency.
Like, uh, I feel so relaxedgoing into this race and it
seems like each one I've done inthe last, you know, six or seven
of'em, they're like, you know,I'm not, I'm not working till 10
o'clock at night every night.
I go home in a normal hour if Iprobably have most of Friday off
(03:42):
to, to kind of just chill.
It's funny.
I worry that I've forgettingsomething, but we don't, don't
seem to, so I guess that's justwhat you, you know, of doing it
a bunch of times gets, gets you.
Well that, and I mean, the boathas been redone and I wanna talk
to you about that in a minute.
And I suspect that, you know, Molike the systems and the, and
the various things, electronicson the boat, I'm assuming those
(04:03):
are all, you know, pretty niceand new and don't need a lot of
attention and so that probablyis a help.
Or am I totally wrong on that?
You have, you had to do that?
No, no.
This boat, the Tina, uh, she,she spared no expense.
The boat is absolutely, it'sBristol inside and out, and.
Everything that needed to bedone to make this boat up to
(04:25):
date and modern has been done.
So it's, um, basically was takendown a bare bones and, and, uh,
refit everywhere in the picture.
It really nice in the pictures.
It looks stunning.
I mean, you know, I, I've zoomin on the pictures like, well,
it can't be that perfect, and Ikeep looking and zooming.
I'm like, oh, yeah, it, itreally does look that perfect.
It really is like, it's veryimpressive.
(04:46):
We, I did the sco, I think threetrans packs a ago, and that boat
was also Bristol condition.
Uh, you kind of, you know, youkind of feel bad if you drop a
wind channel or something, butRight.
I mean, and even the interior, Imean, it's, it, the boat's
teeny, it's not a very big 68foot boat.
Yeah.
And, uh, very low to the water, but the middle of the boat, I,
(05:08):
you know, I stand up straight invery, you know, very comfortable
there.
So.
Yeah, it's gonna be aninteresting ride for sure.
So honored to be on the boat.
Yes, I, it is an honor for sure.
Um, so what did, what has beendone to the boat?
I mean, the boat's been througha number of refits and I, I
could be wrong, but I think itstarted off life at 62 feet and
now it's 68.
62 or three, I think.
(05:30):
Yeah.
And then there, there's like a,a five foot scoop on the back of
the boat.
Right.
Which looks real.
It looks really integrated now.
It just, the whole thing flows.
What, what, what was done to theboat in this refit?
You know, I'm pretty new tothis, so I, I don't wanna be
quoted on stuff, but I think thebiggest deal was there was quite
a bit of carbon structure put inthe boat, and then the, and the
(05:50):
interior, I mean, the exteriorof all was taken off of all the
plywood and, and it's been, there's carbon skins on the
outside of that now too.
Oh, wow.
So, structurally so we're not,we're not worried about the
boat.
Not that we ever were worried, but she just, you know, that she
took the opportunity to makesure the boat was perfect.
So, and you know, there's a, sothere's a bit of, a bit of
(06:12):
structure has been added, butnot to the, not to the, uh,
detriment of making the boatheavy.
It's still quite light, which isgood.
I think we're like one of thelightest of all this, uh, you
know, boats our size.
Oh, I, I'm for sure.
Did they, did you guys put a newrig in it too?
Yeah, so, but that was, so it'sbeen a bit of a piecemeal
project.
I think the keel that's on theboat now was done by Alan
(06:34):
Andrews quite a while ago.
I can't remember if that even, that might be the keel that went
to Tahiti on the boat when theydid the Tahiti race in, in oh
eight.
Uh, and then this is a, this isa newer Transpac 52 rig in the
boat.
Okay.
So it's kind of odd in that, youknow.
(06:56):
You don't realize like sweatback spreader rigs are kind of
meant for fast boats.
That main sheets don't go outvery far.
Right.
And uh, yeah, I mean we're a,we're a flat running boat, you
know, we wanna run deep 1 55 1,you know, in that area when we
can.
It's kind of funny with the mainpressed all out against the
spreader so hard.
I, you know, I worry a littlebit or I worried a little bit
that maybe we would twist therig and harmed it, but we came
(07:19):
down that, that coastal cup orwhatever, the Spinnaker Cup,
whatever one it was fromMonterey to Santa Barbara.
And we, you know, we dideverything we could to try to
destroy the boat and we couldn'tdestroy it.
So we quite a bit moreconfidence now.
You know, I saw it's got a, it'sgot a fat head vein on it now,
right?
Yeah, it look, yeah, I'm notsure.
It looks good.
I'm not sure it does.
(07:40):
It looks good.
I'm not sure that we'll do astudy with, with Greg Stewart
after the race and look at what, you know, if, if, if it's worth
what we're paying for becauseI'm, I'm, I imagine it's fairly
expensive rating wise.
I don't, I don't, you know,maybe in the 14 if we're, if it
we get a lighter race, like 14,15, 16 knots, that thing might
(08:00):
be money and it might, it justmight be a joke that we have it.
So who knows?
It's probably horses forcourses.
If it's a windy year, obviouslywe're paying for something that
Yeah, you don't, we don't need.
Right.
You don't want, um, yeah.
And then Exactly.
In terms of spin sizes, what, where are they, what have you
guys done there?
I mean, the rig is obviously,it's obviously taller than the
old one, right?
Uh, it's actually the areas of,from what I've been told, are
(08:21):
very similar in sail area.
Hmm.
Okay.
So, yeah, we haven't overpoweredthe boat by any means.
You know, I, we haven't, there'snothing radical about, you know,
in fact, someone was telling me,uh, that our spinnaker are
smaller than the, it's okaythat, that 52, so, okay.
She doesn't need, she doesn'tneed the horsepower.
Doesn't seem like so.
We've got a really nice masted, you know, J zero, and we got
(08:44):
the, we've got the outriggersand all that stuff to help her
reach better.
'cause what, what we need to dois try to hang on the first
couple days because, becauseyou're short.
You're short, right?
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
And you guys are in, I mean, youguys, I took a look at your
class.
Do you guys start Friday?
Mm.
Saturday.
Saturday.
Okay.
You guys have a nice class.
I mean, it's virtually sled landyour class, right?
(09:06):
Yeah.
And, and then you guys Yeah, wedo.
And we we're the, we're thelittle boat, which I, in a race
like this, I kind of, I don'tmind being the little boat'cause
there's not really any parking, you know, you don't, there's not
parking lots to get through.
And transpac.
It's, it's the only weird, only, you know, the big jump that a
faster boat can get on you is toget out to that synoptic breeze
and, uh, like.
(09:27):
You know, that could be the onejumpstart those guys get, but
um, yeah, we just gotta hang onbasically.
Um, and not get tricky.
I mean, we, the Iwt owes us likesix hours-ish depending on the
length of the race.
Right.
You know, that's at the end ofthat race.
That's 65, 70 miles no problem.
So, right.
Mean, that's, that's a lot of,that's a lot of miles.
Unless, who knows, maybe we getout.
(09:48):
I, I have such, I have really noexpectations just yet.
'cause I have no way to havethem, but.
You know, if they, they get outthere and they're starting to
put, you know, they're two knotsfaster, then obviously, you
know, we cleat the sheets offand have a nice time.
But, uh, well, I mean, yeah, listen, so there may not be, uh,
(10:09):
light spots to run into, butthere'll be, uh, garbage patches
to, into, so that, yeah, that'salways comforting.
Um, so this race is, this raceis quite, it's not
straightforward yet.
'cause the models are really.
They're diametrically opposed.
They're coming a little bitcloser, but they're still quite
different.
Really?
So what are you guys forecastingfor Breeze?
(10:31):
Well, there's, you gotta getoutta here for one thing.
'cause the, um.
That Eddie kind of wants to comeback to you at on Saturday
night.
Like, if you don't get farenough out, you're gonna get
sucked back up by that Eddieagain.
Ooh.
And then you'll have to, you'llsit all night long until the,
the breeze fills in again.
I mean, that's one possibility.
Uh, one co one of the models, Ithink the GFS has quite a, a
(10:55):
little light spot in the, at thelobe of the, of the ridge or the
high.
And that can be tricky to getthrough.
To the point where some modelsshow it, like it's a, basically
it's a hole.
It's a whole little high and yougotta decide, try to get above
it or below it.
Oh, good lord.
So, yeah.
And then the one model has thistropical storm that's gonna be,
(11:17):
you know, is forming now, getting quite strong, like it
looks like a hurricane.
And then another model justbarely has it being any kind of
a disturbance whatsoever.
So we'll see.
We'll see what happens.
It, it sounds like it could befairly unsettled.
Um, yes.
You know, it's interesting.
I'm looking at the, I'm lookingright now at the tracker.
The boats that startedyesterday, they've had breeze.
I mean, they're all cruisingalong at seven, eight knots.
(11:39):
You know, these, these, I mean, that's really good for those
guys.
I mean, they had an ice escape.
Yeah, they, they really did.
They did.
And you guys will be fortunateto get such a thing, but, um.
But, and so in terms ofreaching, I mean obviously, you
know, you, you can't simplifythis race, but you kind of can
in that, you know, it's X amountof, you know, jib reaching for a
while or whatever sort of headsale combination that, you know,
(12:00):
people are running these days.
Pretty complicated, prettytricked.
Do you guys have, do you guyshave a setup to really, you
know, sort of enhance yourreaching capabilities?
Yeah, we do.
I mean, obviously we're not as,uh.
We're not as, uh, refined at ityet.
'cause we're, it's, you know,we're so new to the boat.
But, um, you know, we've,they've, we've got some, we've
got a nice wardrobe between,'cause uh, Stu, the guys at
(12:24):
Doyle Sales in New Zealand did,you know, did a study and, and
built a bunch of sales for us.
And, um, they all seem prettynice.
And we just got a, we got some, one more brand new, uh, kite,
north Kite, uh, just last weekjust to kind of fill in a gap
that we, we saw and, uh.
I think we've got the boatpretty well optimized.
I mean, obviously there's alwaysyou, there's always more you
(12:45):
could do.
But as a, as a starting point, Ithink I feel pretty confident
about our, our rig setups.
Uh, it's, it'll be interesting.
I mean, rarely see, I mean, there has been times when the,
when the race, it blows prettygood, but.
I think, I hope that it blowsbecause I would love to see what
you guys can do, you know, when, when you're able to sort of
square back a little bit, as youmentioned.
(13:06):
Yeah.
And, uh, and that boat starts totake off despite its shorter
length.
I mean, it's a much lighter boatand it, it, it surfs really
well.
And I mean, that'll be reallyfascinating to see how you guys
stack up with the, with theregular 70 foot sleds.
Yeah.
Like I said, our, our polarshave a.
Same speed as the GI and, andthen we've obviously gone out
and sail those polars.
(13:27):
So if you, you know, I don'tlike to get overconfident or
even read too much into thatstuff, but, you know, I gotta
believe my buddy Ernie, he,that's what he's good at.
And he said, you know, I'm, thenumbers we're seeing are good.
I mean, this is, this is verydoable for us.
So.
Yeah, uh, that's it.
But you heard of people, KeithKilpatrick just predicted a win
on Transpac.
I mean, that's, boy, a win forsomebody's gonna win.
(13:51):
You're right.
I predict someone will win.
So, so when it's light, and Iknow maybe you don't know
because you haven't really doneit too much yet, but when it's
light, you know, just like, Idon't know, you know, the six,
eight, not shit.
I mean, are you guys, are youguys at a disadvantage or are
you guys able to sort of boogiealong in that stuff?
(14:11):
I don't think so.
We're pretty wicked up.
Hmm.
We don't have any trouble withthat at all.
That's great.
From what, from what I've seen.
You know, we did a light airbeat, uh, out leaving Monterey
to go out to the, that one seabuoy, and we were up against
the, the meanie, which is, uh,you know, tp it's a, it's a 52
for offshore.
Yeah.
And, uh.
(14:31):
You know, we were able to hangright with them.
Really?
Yeah, I'm sure it was, it was,uh, disheartening for your buddy
Thorpe, but you know, it waspretty, we were pretty happy.
So I'll say now what you guyswere going up wind?
Yeah.
In about seven, like six tonine.
And we had our, we had our Jzero up and they just had their
(14:52):
regular jib up and they, youknow.
If anytime they, you know, thatboat's gonna walk away for us, I
would've thought it would'vebeen then.
Yeah.
That's pretty, um, that's prettyreassuring.
Yeah.
That's bitching.
So go ahead.
No, I You go ahead.
So do you have a, I'm assumingyou have a pretty nice crew.
I haven't really looked, but wehave, we have a, we have a
(15:14):
really good group of people, um,but you know, no, uh, no
headliners.
We've got, um.
Will who I love Sail with.
And you, you must be familiarwith him of course, because he's
a San Diego guy of, of course.
And then another guy that's aregular with us on Apel Grosso,
um, Dustin Durant.
Sure.
And myself and Ernie.
And then we've got, um, billMenninger, another SoCal legend.
(15:37):
Yeah.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yes, yes.
Yeah.
And, uh, you know, cool, cool.
Calm and collect.
And then we've got two gals, um,Sophie Cizik, who just was on
the mop pre on the last Volvo.
She's awesome.
And then Katie Pettibone, who'sbeen around the world a couple
times, and then our owner Tina.
Oh dude, that's great.
(15:57):
I mean, was there, was there aconsidered effort, uh, by, by
the owner to, you know, get acouple top female sailors on the
boat?
I think I wasn't here for allfor that.
I'm not even technically noteven supposed to be here, but,
uh.
Anyway, that's a whole notherstory.
But, so I didn't have my, Ididn't have much of a say in
the, in the picking of the crew.
(16:18):
I, you know, ipo, I speak withErnie.
We're really good friends allthe time.
And I, I think there was alittle bit of an effort made
towards having gals on the boat.
And, you know, I'm a hundred,I've sailed with gals on the
boat before.
I'm a hundred percent for it.
So, um, yeah, I, I, I think it'sawesome.
Um, what, tell, tell me aboutthe owner.
Well, I mean.
It's, I don't, I mean, I've,I've just, I'm just trying to
(16:39):
get to know her.
She's a really neat lady, veryoutgoing, uh, very successful it
seems like in everything shetries to do, or everything she
does do, uh, successful in herown right.
And, um, this, so this boat washer husband's boat, uh, guy by
name.
Chris.
Wes.
Chris.
Wes.
Chris.
Right.
And he passed away.
(17:00):
Yeah.
And then the boat was sittingand I don't know what wild hair
she got or how it all startedreally, but she just decided I'm
gonna, you know, I'm gonna, inhis memory, I'm gonna refurbish
this boat and.
And, and we're gonna take it toHawaii and, and campaign this
boat.
And so she hired Jimmy Slaughterand the boat went to Densho and
was there for, I, I gotta thinkit was like, almost two years on
(17:22):
and off.
I mean, you know, it wasn'tsolid work for two years, but
the boat was, you know, down andgetting worked on.
Um, yeah.
And she's, uh, she's hung inthere all the way with this.
And, uh, it's, it's pretty cool.
She's very, very excited about.
Um, the whole thing aboutsailing.
This is not, this isn't a oneand done for her, you know, and
(17:45):
you, I.
You know, I've spoken with herand she's not, I, she's not
blowing smoke.
She's really likes this, so it'sawesome.
I love to, it's, it's really funto go sail with enthusiastic
people that this is, you know, first time for them and they're
just, she just, and she's gonnado all the cooking, which is
nice.
One less thing.
Yeah, no kidding.
Um, yeah, I mean, you can'treplace enthusiasm, you know,
(18:07):
and just, no.
And, and then if you just lookat the, you know, sort of the
whole backstory of the boat, thehistory of the boat, and then
the fact that, you know, she'senthused about, you know, making
the legacy as good as it can bein terms of, you know, what the
boat now is and yeah, get somegood people on the boat and
hopefully you guys have a greatrace.
I mean, obviously there's a lotof people pulling for you guys.
Um, um, and in terms of like.
(18:31):
The top boats in your class, I'massuming that Well, I'm, it's a
dumbest, I'm not gonna make anyassumption, which is the rated
fastest boat in your, in yourclass.
I, the merlin's the fastest byquite a bit.
And then I think that the, Ithink the bolt and the pi wh are
very close and then the GI getsa little bit of time from them.
(18:55):
It's pretty, pretty closebetween everybody except for the
Merlin.
I mean, I, like I said, I thinkthe pie w gives us six hours and
I mean, and they're definitelythe vote to beat, of course.
I mean, those guys leave, theyleave no stone unturned.
No.
You know, of course.
Best crew our, like I wastelling Ernie.
Our best sailors on our besthelmen are not as good as their
worst helmen, you know?
(19:16):
So I know, and he's like, don'tsell yourself short.
I'm like, I'm not, I'm justbeing totally, you know, it Got
it.
Got Torbin Grail.
I mean, that guy's just, he'sphenomenal, you know, and, and
Benny Mitchell and Isler and youknow, and some other guys, I
don't know.
But yes, it's always top flight.
It's a top flight program.
There's no money.
Uh, spared.
And, you know, it's, it's goodfor them.
(19:37):
I mean, listen, if yeah, if Ihad it, I'd do the same goddamn
thing.
Um, well it's, it's a littlefunny for me'cause I'm actually
racing against my boss.
That's right.
'cause you work for the PY Whackprogram.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I work for the Disneys and Isaid if I'm staying on with, for
the rest of the season with the70, I'm doing transpac.
And if you say no, then I'm notstaying on.
(19:58):
So I'm going anyway.
Good.
And you're staying on so.
Yeah, for a little bit longer.
Okay.
I mean, the boats that boat'swrapped up in and going up for
sale, so they worked out quitewell.
That's the, that's LAC at 70,right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
The Volvo 70.
Okay.
Yeah.
Um, and so will you guys thoughbe looking, I mean, really isn't
this, I wouldn't call it agrudge match, but isn't, don't
(20:21):
you think Merlin and Ragtime aresort of like suited for battle?
You know, they're both oldschool, you know, they've gone
head to head before.
Um, I, I like that the battle ofthe classics, although they're
really nice and updated, bothboats, right.
They're just so much faster thanus on paper though.
It's like 12 hours or something.
Really?
So we really shouldn't, yeah, wereally shouldn't see that much
(20:42):
of them.
I mean, if, if we are, obviouslywe're doing, if we're staying
in, in, uh, contact with them,we're, we're gonna be doing
really well.
Um, you know, I don't know whyI, I don't get into these rating
stuff.
Um.
I would just go nuts.
But obviously they, there'ssomething they don't, that
they've done to the boat thatdoesn't do well under the,
under, you know, whatever ORRwe're sailing under it's in.
(21:05):
So, dude, we got in San Diego,I, for some reason it's ORC,
Uber All list down here and.
You know, they ditched PHRF,which at first I thought was the
greatest thing in the world.
But then when I realized howshitty my hoey 33 rates in ORC,
I'm like, let's bring back PHRF,goddammit.
But, uh, I don't, I don'tpretend to know the numbers.
I mean, I had, I had, uh, GregStewart run a little analysis.
(21:28):
Yeah.
And you know, he sends backeverything.
I'm like, uh, can you tell mewhat this means exactly?
Shit.
Um, but uh, yeah, well listen, Imean, I think I'm hoping to God
that you guys get good runningconditions because that's gotta
be where you'll shine.
And I would, yeah.
I can't imagine Merlin beingthat much faster.
(21:49):
Than you guys in that stuff.
I mean, they're longer for sure, but that's the beauty of this
thing, right?
As Chris Berman from ESPN usedto say, when they're talking
about, oh, who's gonna win?
Who's gonna do that?
And he would say, that's whythey play the game, you know?
And Exactly.
And, you know, we don't knowwhat's gonna happen here.
That's why you guys are all, ifwe knew, well, you know, why go,
(22:09):
I mean, obviously the odds arethe, the, the smart bet would be
pi whack.
I mean, you'd be a fool to betagainst them, but yeah.
You yo, use a dark horse, man.
You gotta be getting some goododds, I would think.
Yeah.
That, that little, she's like alittle toothpick out there in
the ocean.
You're not much.
Oh, that's awesome.
Well, listen, dude, I knowyou're busy getting the boat
together.
Um, uh, thanks for your time.
(22:31):
I, it's just awesome to hearabout this boat.
Pleasure.
How you guys are doing this, and, uh, I'll, oh, and you are
going to be sending us updates, are you not?
Yes, yes, yes.
We'll, and are I cleared thatwith Tina?
And, uh, you know, this boat, ifyou want to start out your,
your, uh.
Boats thing with a bang thisboat when in August will be
available.
Oh.
And she, she has no problempromo.
She, she likes to promote thisboat.
(22:52):
She's very, she's very proud ofthe boat.
She's very proud of what she'sdone.
She, there's a big social mediapresence for the boat and, uh,
she loves all that stuff.
Oh, she's not shy.
Excellent.
Excellent.
So yeah, we could do a retrovote, uh, video on Ragtime.
Talk about No problem.
Talk about.
Perfect.
That's great.
Alright buddy, listen, we'll bein touch and, and thanks my
friend.
I appreciate you.
Okay, yeah.
(23:13):
I'll talk to you soon.
You betcha.
Thanks very much.
Bye-bye.
Yeah, bye.
Keith Kilpatrick, everybody.
Um, he mentioned a guy namedErnie.
It's Ernie Rau, um, anotherSouthern California local I.
And, um, uh, I love the factthat they've got a couple of
really good female sailors onthe boat.
Um, you know, paired with somegood male sailors and, you know,
(23:34):
not a lot of ego on that boat.
I mean, Keith is one of thenicest guys to sail with.
Very pleasant, great sailor.
Done it all.
Um, you know, been on boats thathave won so much stuff.
I re, my first encounter withKeith was back when the Santa
Cruz 50 twos were brand new.
And, um, when I was stillselling sales for sobs dad by
(23:56):
the seashore, um, I got a, uh, aguy named Jeff Chandler from the
Chandler LA Times family.
He bought one and we put a tallcarbon rig on it.
And this was at the same timethat, uh, uh.
A couple or three, uh, Andrew's50 sixes were made and you know,
they were better boats than theSanta Cruz 52.
I mean, they just wore, we werenot far off.
(24:16):
I had some good folks and wewere good, but you know, it was
like a.
It was the Newport Beach crowd, you know, and they didn't have
much interest in Tempesta andhis posse in San Diego.
You know, I think they generallylooked down on us, you know, and
like, you know, like, fuck youguys.
And uh, I remember we beat'emboat for boat.
I think it was Port Varda.
(24:37):
Um, even though we owed'em sometime, we ground him down and
passed them at the end.
And, uh, the only guy, and Ididn't even know Keith back
then, the only guy to come upand go.
Dude, nice job was KeithKilpatrick.
And, um, you know, I alwaysappreciated that because he's
just a dude, right?
He's just a dude.
And, uh, everybody knows Keithloves Keith.
(24:57):
And, you know, sentimentally, you've got to be pulling for
Ragtime.
Uh, and if, and if you're not,um, you know, hell with you.
So transpac again, like I said, the, the, uh, the first class
that started yesterday and mybuddy Eric Heim is on the Cal
40.
Called restless, and as of rightnow, they are first in ORR,
(25:17):
first in division nine.
So, and they're cruising alongat 7.8 knots and Yeah.
Um, so it'll be interesting, youknow, typically in a, I wouldn't
say typically, but very oftenwhen you have these staggered
starts over multiple days, which, you know, okay.
I think they could probablyshorten up the, the distance
between the starts, butwhatever.
(25:39):
Very often these smaller, youknow, slower boats just get
screwed at the start, you know, there's no wind and they're
flopping around off Catalina andit's just awful.
Um, and so it's nice to seethese guys get off with some
push and, uh, you know, I don'tknow what the weather's looking
like ahead of them, but ifthey're able to carry this, you
know, through maybe a coupletransitions and, uh.
(26:01):
You know, start to start to getkites up perhaps.
Um, uh, you know, there's a goodchance that one of these boats,
like restless, the Cal 40 couldwin this thing overall.
I mean, it's too early to makeany call like that, but if
you're just looking at likesigns of how things might go,
it's, this is a pretty strongindication.
This might be good for the, uh,for these smaller boats, if you
(26:22):
will.
So, yeah, Transpac fun.
Um.
And, uh, you know, I'll befollowing it, of course, and I
think we'll probably try to doanother podcast on Transpac.
Um, maybe from the water.
It's very possible, so we'll,we'll have to see how that goes.
Hey, before I run outta here, let's talk about Tajima Direct.
You know who these guys are.
(26:42):
They make the best lenses.
On the planet.
You like polarized lenses?
Yes you do.
Everybody uses them.
They make the best.
I know they made a, a, a pair.
Actually I'm, you know what?
I'm due for a set.
I think I'll hit these guys upand see if I can get a sailing
anarchy discount.
Um, they'll custom make them toany frame.
You can pick a frame that theyhave and you can use that.
If you have prescription, theycan do that too.
(27:05):
Um, really good guys.
The Rosenberg family, I meanfather, son team too.
Just really good people.
Um, and so, and these things aremade for sailing.
I mean, they're not just youroff the shelf Oakleys.
Um, it's funny calling them offthe shelf, but you kind of have
been relegated to off the shelf, especially when a company like
Tajima Direct makes the customstuff that they do and they can
(27:28):
make them for you and your needsand your i's needs.
That's the best part.
Find out more.

Hey, listen, thank you forlistening.
Thanks to my guests, KeithKilpatrick.
(27:48):
That was fun.
Geez, I didn't know how littlehe knew about the boat.
Um.
But it's, you know, it's a newprogram and, uh, so they're kind
of learning as they go, which Ithink is so cool.
Um, and you know, when you havegood people on board, yeah.
You learn stuff pretty quick.
(28:09):
Alrighty, I'm outie for SailingAnarchy.
I'm Scott Tam Pesta.
See ya.
