This week, Matthew chickens out on his original topic because it was too creepy so he switches to tales of the Icelandic Huldufólk. But it turns out this isn’t just tales of fun elves who throw parties in your house while you’re asleep, it also includes slavery, man-eating cats, peeping toms, the patriarchy, and so much more. After subjecting Anna to several end of the world myths, this month Matthew swings in the other direction with the Chinese creation myth of Pangu (probably the coolest dude we've covered since Enkidu). This week it's the tale of ancient Greece's greatest inventor (he invented the axe!) Daedalus. It's a tale of his inability to keep himself (and his son) out of trouble, a recounting of his many contributions to the world (such as sex cows), and we correct a story that everybody knows but gets the wrong moral from. Plus, Matthew is a champion and Anna defeats the intro.

In this week's episode, we discuss the life of King David: giant killer, foreskin collector, wife stealer…you know just your regular old king stuff. He’s basically a serial killer but also one of the biggest heroes of the bible. (Go figure.) This week we dive back into floods with the story of Noah and the biblical flood myth. We get into the practicalities of ark construction and dung removal, how this story is the origin of racism, the crazy people who keep looking for an imaginary boat, and the terrible people who made their own arks.  Plus, Anna does an epically villainous act and Matthew meets a person! 

This month we put the “Mess” in Mesopotamia  as Matthew introduces Anna to one of the oldest stories of all time; The Epic of Gilgamesh. They talk about it’s influence on other epics (including the Bible and the Avengers), the poor judgment of the gods, the relative scariness of farm animals, and what a much cooler dude Gilgamesh’s friend Enkidu is. We start with the end of Norse mythology as we discuss the myth of Ragnarök. This myth has everything: Dragons, giants, wolves, squirrels, someone eats the moon, a ship made of fingernails, trees, and much, much more. Plus Matthew pitches some more side shows, Anna derails the whole conversation with discussion about a couple who had a bunch of kids and we make a plan for a pretty great party next year that you’re invited to!

Back from break with a big name in the saint game: Saint Augustine. He’s a guy who loved sin as much as he loved lying about sinning and we follow him from Algeria to Milan and back again with minimal asides about Columbian hippos Plus, Anna learns new skills and Matthew miraculously survives another Oxford Comedy Festival.
