Speaker 1 (00:01):
Have you ever coached
or mentored someone who just
wouldn't take action?
It's like you see theirpotential, you pour into them,
but nothing changes.
Well, today we're going to talkabout why that happens and,
more importantly, how to unlockthe desire in your team so they
actually take action and grow.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah.
So let's first break down theword desire.
When I really learned what thisdefinition came from.
It can be so much freedom andjust understanding.
There's a purpose, a hugepurpose that we've all been
given this gift of life and toreally discover our purpose.
So desire comes from the Latinde which meaning from, and sire
(00:48):
meaning father.
So at its core, desire meansfrom the father, and
historically it's been impliedthat something is bestowed upon
you, it's a calling or somethingis meant for you to seek, and
so not to make it religious, butfrom the father, like.
If you think of it like that,it's like it's a burning flame
inside of you that you know it'ssomething that you will put
(01:08):
hair on this earth to create.
And so desire just isn't randomeither.
I truly believe, and I'm sureLindsay does too.
It's inherited, you know, it'singrained in you and it's it's
waiting to be awakened.
But a lot of times what people?
What happens is people gothrough life and they never
ignite that flame to have desireor show their desire.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yes, and so you know
what's so interesting about the
reason why people don't takeaction is because desire is
usually that missing component, and so we really want to dive
into like, where does desirecome from?
Cause, like Jen mentioned, youknow the word root word comes
from the father Um.
But we also want to know, like, how can we create it on our
(01:52):
teams?
And then how do we awaken thatgrowth in others?
Because desire isn't justrandom, Um, you know it's.
It's, it is like Jen mentioned,it's something waiting to be
awakened inside of you, and it'slike when everybody is showing
up asleep inside of the salonspace, there's no magic being
(02:13):
created, there's nothingincredible happening around you,
it just feels like ho-hum.
You know we create that desirein others and how can we help
someone take action?
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yeah, you know, I
think about my desire and, you
know, growing up from a familythat didn't have a lot of money
I think that's what sparked inme from that was like I never
want to live a life where I haveto struggle with money.
And so, like when I understoodthat my desire, you know, was to
create a life where I didn'thave to struggle with money,
every single like when Iunderstood that my desire, you
know, was to create a life whereI didn't have to struggle with
money, every single action itemthat I've done since then has
(02:49):
helped shape and create the lifethat I have now.
And so, like just knowing Idon't want to go back to living
that space.
So all the extra classes, allthe extra teachings, all the
extra uncovering andunderstanding of myself, like
that really helped me tounderstand my desire and be
clear about that desire.
You know, it's kind of like thesame thing with a teammate, like
if you've ever been in a growthsession with someone and you've
(03:14):
coaching them and then they youset up a plan, an actual plan.
You think it's really great, and then they come back in like
a month later you're like well, tell me about your actual plan.
How did you do with it?
And they're like, yeah, nothing.
And you're like, oh, okay, well, I gave you some strategies, we
role played it, we mapped out aplan.
Like nothing, like whathappened.
(03:34):
And so you know, the really themost important part of that is
like they didn't lack theknowledge.
They really truly lacked thedesire, and it's hard to force
desire.
You know it has to bediscovered for within.
If you've ever done publicspeaking and you spoke to a
group and you know like morethan half of the room is just
standing there staring at you,it could be related because they
(03:56):
don't have the desire to, toreally uncover what their full
potential is.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yeah, I love that you
said that because you know that
also reminds me of your exampleof being in a growth session.
You know, because it's like youcan give everybody all of those
tools.
You can role play, you can mapout the plan, have all those
strategies in place.
You can give the most amazingspeech, um, you know, in front
of a group of people.
But when there is no desire, itdoesn't even matter, it's never
(04:29):
going to be created.
So so how can you create desireon your team?
You know, one of the one of thekey things here is to help them
see a bigger vision.
So you've got to make itpersonal, you know, because
people don't move towardssomething vague.
They need a clear andcompelling vision.
So you know, you can ask them afew powerful questions like
(04:52):
what does success look like foryou?
You know, if I could wave amagic wand, where would you want
to be in three years, or desireto be in three years, and what
kind of a life do you want tocreate?
And the reason why thesequestions work is when people
see the possibility of somethingbigger, their desire grows.
(05:13):
And so, same thing, you know youcan also take this down like
those are some bigger, biggerfuture version or vision in mind
, but like even thinking aboutsmall things, like if somebody
wants to purchase a new car, they want to take a vacation,
they want to do something likethat, showing them you know how,
hey, having, okay, you want to,you want to take this vacation?
(05:35):
Okay, how much is it going tocost?
Like, maybe you come down to,you know it's going to cost a
thousand dollars or $2,000,whatever.
It is Okay.
So that would be an additional$150 a month if you want to go
in nine months or whatever itwould be.
And so so coming up with thisvision and this plan and then
saying, okay, now how can wecreate that inside of your daily
(05:55):
plan or your monthly plan orwhatever that might look like,
because that's going to actuallyhelp create that change, you
know, then they're going tostart to see, okay, so this is
like obviously what's in it forthe guests when I make the
proper product recommendationsor service recommendations is
that the guest is excited andyou know they can't wait to
return and they have thistransformation.
But what's in it for theservice provider to do?
(06:17):
That is like then they wanttheir own desires, because what
we know to be true is like whenyou help enough other people get
what they want, you willnaturally, as a byproduct
product, get what you want inreturn.
But you have to help themunlock that desire.
Otherwise it's just all goingto remain the same and be
(06:38):
lackluster altogether.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
So good.
So another way to think aboutcreating desire in your team Hmm
, so good.
So another way to think aboutcreating desire in your team
cause it is possible is toeliminate the fear of wanting
more.
You know, I I feel like manypeople hold themselves back
because they feel guilty forwanting success, actually a
success.
I've read something I can'tremember what it said, but like,
success is the number one thingthat most people are scared of,
so they self-sabotage um, youknow, and feel guilty for what
(07:04):
they've created and it keepsthem stuck.
We even have a podcast I can'tremember the name of the podcast
A couple episodes ago, where wedid like a really cool guilt
exercise that you can do withyour team to help them eliminate
some guilt that they may beexperiencing, to clear the space
, to be able to offer newopportunities into their mind.
New opportunities into theirmind.
And because the thing is likewe go through life as as humans,
(07:27):
hearing things like money isn'teverything, or be grateful for
what you have, or success isselfish, you know.
And so when we think about, when we add story or meaning to
every story, like we kind offlip the script on that instead
of wanting more, as self isn'tselfish, it's a responsibility,
and when you grow you createopportunities for others.
And that's the most beautifulpart.
(07:48):
When I was saying earlier aboutmy childhood is like I knew I
wanted to have that incomebecause I wanted to make a big
contribution in the world, andmoney was going to be one of the
vehicles that I can that I'llbe able to do that in.
And so like it is so incredibleof you know, listening to your
team, understanding what theymay be fearful of and then
helping them rewrite this, themeaning to the stories that
(08:09):
they've created.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
That's huge when,
when you understand those
beliefs that they have and youhelp them rewrite the meaning to
the story that they've created.
You know, I think, um, thatreally can eliminate that fear
of that people have of success.
And also the name of thatpodcast that you mentioned, jen,
was I think it was New Year, new Mindset, letting Overgrow.
(08:32):
It's so good.
The guilt exercise in there isincredible for your team,
because a lot of times, peoplewon't even let themselves desire
when they do have that guiltsitting inside of their
subconscious mind, and so whenyou're able to eliminate some of
that guilt, it's like cleaningout your closet.
Then you have room to take onsomething more and to realize,
(08:54):
like hey, I deserve to havedesires, and you know, and and
having those desires really canhelp them get to the next level.
I think another way that we canalso, you know, help them, um,
create, create desire is tochallenge them with some
accountability.
So, you know, um, helping themunderstand that you believe in
(09:17):
them and helping them to set agoal that pushes them outside of
their comfort zone.
Um, because, you know, whenpeople start to see small wins,
their desire grows and so, youknow, pointing it out to them
like hey, I just want to pointout, like, your paycheck grew,
um, you know, $200 over the lasttwo weeks, or whatever it might
(09:37):
be like pointing out some ofthose wins, like hey, your
average ticket is growing.
Hey, it looks like, um, youknow, whatever it is like.
Look for those um you know keymetrics that are pointing in the
direction that what they'redoing is working, and celebrate
those small wins, because whenyou help hold them accountable
to living a better life and andreally you know, creating it
(09:59):
into reality, their desire willgrow and they will want more
things and want to contribute tothe world in a bigger way.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
I love that.
They will want to contribute tothe world in a bigger way.
I love that.
And you know, anotheropportunity too is like to lead
with passion and great energy, because desire truly is
contagious, Like if you see asuccess story of you know
someone taking something that'struly important to them and then
creating something great withthat.
Like it really is contagious.
(10:28):
So you know, if you make itexciting about growth, education
, success, your team will be too.
It'd be like going into a growthsession and you'd be like okay,
so what numbers do you want tohit this month?
I know nobody listening to thiswould say that, but like you
know, what numbers do you wantto hit this month?
Okay, let's set your goals, butlike to really get connected
(10:50):
and show them the passion.
And you know to, like Lindsaywas saying, looking at their
wins and you know to help themsee like, hey, look at the
impact we're making here, Lookat what you're doing.
You know this skill that youchallenged yourself with over
the last 30 days is going tohelp you build the life that you
want.
And so I think, as as leadersand salon owners, we have to
have that energy and passion, because everything is energy.
Energy cannot be created nordestroyed.
(11:11):
We know that, and so it canjust change form, and so, like,
having that beautiful energy isonly going to transfer to your
team.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
I love that, jen, and
, you know, I think it marries
perfectly with another thingthat's super helpful when
helping others create desire, and that's truly speaking to
their identity and not justtheir skills.
You know, because people takeaction when it aligns with how
they see themselves.
Training people's skills reallywork to shift their identity.
(11:45):
So, instead of like saying, hey, you know, jen, you should sell
more retail.
You know, approach it like youare a beauty professional who
transforms lives and peopletrust you to guide them, because
what we know is when peoplebelieve they are meant for more,
their desire follows.
Um, I think one of my favoritebooks that I've ever read that
(12:07):
really talks, you know, kind ofto helping speak to people's
identity was written by SarahSinger and it was Sarah Singer
and Nuri, I believe and it'scalled Tap into Greatness.
You know, and I think one ofthe things that stood out to me
in this book is, you know, shechanged this certain school
(12:28):
system inside of Chicago where alot of people's identities were
that they, you know, were highschool dropouts, they hated
school, all this stuff, and shejust, really, truly to me, it
was like she was speaking totheir identity.
She saw them all as tensinstead of as twos when they
walked in the door and she spoketo them like that.
Tens instead of as twos whenthey walked in the door and she
spoke to them like that.
So, instead of like gettingannoyed with your team because
(12:49):
they're they should sell moreretail and they're not, start
speaking to them as if they doand that is who you believe them
to be, and really you'll startto see their whole identity will
shift too.
You know, I think, um, I, thisis the.
The book is so good.
I remember I gave it one timeto one of my children's daycare
(13:10):
providers, just because I sawhey, here's a beautiful
opportunity for her.
She's getting to.
You know, transform lives andif she sees, you know how
important it is to speak to achild's identity like everybody
will transform in that situation.
And so you know, I think thatwe have to remember like we too,
as the salon owners, are in thebusiness of transformation.
(13:32):
We're in the business oftransforming the lives of our
team members and the way thatthey see themselves, so that
they believe they're meant formore.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Love that.
I love that book too.
That is a great book.
If you haven't read that, ahuge opportunity for you.
And so I think, as the salonowners, we have to remember is
desire isn't something you cangive.
It's something that you trulyhelp someone uncover.
Remember, desire means from thefather, and so your team needs
that vision.
They need that permission towant more of those challenges,
(14:01):
the energy and the identityshifts to truly unlock their
full potential.
You know the seeds are alreadyin there.
Your job as a leader isn't toforce it, it's to water it, to
nurture it, and that's whereyou'll really create the
environment for them to grow.

of working together as a teamto to become a six figure and
beyond service provider insideof our industry.

We can't wait to see you again.
