Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, welcome back
everybody.
This is episode number 17 ofthe Sammy Guru podcast.
My name is Jeff Springer andwith me, as always, my co-host,
torrey Torrey, say hi, hey, how's it going?
And it is.
It's actually 75 degrees todayin Phoenix.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
It is quite nice.
It is A little bit of rain.
Did you get any?
Yeah, we got a little in Peoria.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
I woke up this
morning and I thought I had
teleported to like a differentcity and state.
I was like what is going on?
I was like this can't bePhoenix, because it's not 90
degrees at 8 am.
It was like when I went outsidethis morning, it was like 65.
When we took Jonathan to schoolat 7 am I was like, wow, this
is crazy.
You know, you guys got tounderstand, like if you don't
(00:40):
live in Arizona.
We had a stretch of like sixmonths where it wasn't below 110
any of those days, like aconsecutive like five or
six-month streak from like Mayto like October, early October,
I think it even started in Aprilto be honest, it might have
been late April, it was 100degrees.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
It's just been
straight ever since.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
So, you know, we got
like a little break where it
dipped below 100 right before Iwent to STC, but then they're
like oh, just kidding, summer'snot over.
And it was back up to like 110for like three days and then it
stayed above 100.
And then like the upper 90s thelast few weeks and now, finally
, it's supposed to go back up to90, though early next week.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, that's what I
saw.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
It's not all over yet
.
Hopefully, once October is over, we'll have five months of like
70s and 80s.
Usually, november, december, january, february and March are
pretty safe for like being inthe 70s to 80s range, so
hopefully that's the case andall these clothing companies
that I like.
They send me marketing emails.
(01:41):
Like it's time to buy yourhoodie.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
I'm like slow down
man.
I don't need a hoodie for quitea while longer, probably like
the end of November I'll need ahoodie.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I don't even need a
hoodie really at the beginning
of November, because when it's70 degrees I don't really feel
like I need one.
But, like in the 60s, I'll takea small hoodie.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
No, for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
How's your week been,
Torrey?
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Well, you know it's
my first week back.
We had fall break.
The previous week Some schooldistricts even had two weeks off
, which is I am pretty jelly of.
But yeah, no, first week backand it's been a little busy.
But you know, today they had atest, so we had to chill for
like a little bit.
What was the test on?
They did it on proofs trianglecongruency proofs Awesome.
(02:29):
I like a little geometry proofright now.
I know, I know I was gettingpretty excited.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
But yeah, you
actually had the same fall break
as Jonathan.
Last week, while Nicole and Iwere gone, jonathan had the week
off, so my mother-in-lawwatched the kids.
Last week, nicole and I, wewent to Vegas from Thursday
through Sunday.
The main purpose of going wasfor the Steelers versus Raiders
(02:54):
game.
Of course, we were just tryingto relax.
The rest of the time we werethere, I had a four-night stay
offer at Aria.
We go to Vegas a lot, lot andwe gamble a lot, so you get free
rooms, you get free stuff.
I didn't pay for the ticketseither.
My host, my casino host, gaveus free tickets to the game.
So that's I mean they weren'tfree.
I lost enough money to havebought the tickets for sure
(03:18):
while I was there.
I mean, that's the whole modelright of getting perks from the
casino, but they do give us alot of really nice stuff.
The rooms we get are reallynice, the tickets, we get some
nice perks.
It probably evens out in theend.
We don't spend so much morethan the value of the perks, so
it probably is pretty close.
I would imagine Some people gocrazy and then the perks aren't
worth it.
(03:38):
We try to keep it yeah exactly, but we had fun and the Steelers
won the game against the Raiders, so that was certainly pretty
exciting.
So that's what I was up to.
I took two full days off, pretty much.
So, if you guys noticed, lastweek, saturday and Sunday there
was not any content really onYouTube.
I didn't post a video for twodays, kind of took two days off
(03:59):
fully, which I haven't done in along time, but sometimes it's
necessary to kind of keep thingsgoing, which I haven't done in
a long time, but sometimes it'snecessary to keep things going.
So this week a little bit moreof a standard show because we
had Max Weinbach on as guest, the last one Before that I had
just come back from SDC and wethrew a show together like 45
(04:22):
minutes after I got off theplane.
So I just basically told myexperience at SDC because I
hadn't prepared any kind of shownotes or anything.
But this week we have a littlemore standard show.
I have some news to talk about.
I have some hardware which Iactually have right here.
Actually, today I'm using theGalaxy Books 5 Pro 360 as my
laptop, and then I have theGalaxy S24 FE in blue here and
(04:45):
then way over here to the side, right here, we have this guy.
He's the Tab.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
S10 Ultra.
That's a cool stand.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah, I just have my
Twitter feed here for questions,
cool, so I'll talk about thatin the second half of the show.
I've been using the Tab S10Ultra.
I got it right after I got backfrom SDC, because Samsung can
never ship me anything that Iorder on time, so it was
supposed to arrive before I left, but of course they don't ever.
They wouldn't give me reviewunits for years and then they
(05:16):
won't even ship the stuff Ipurchase on time.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
What's going on
around here?
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Anyway, let's get
started with some news.
So the first piece of news herethat I have listed is, uh,
pretty exciting for most people.
We have the gift capturefeature returned to samsung
phones this week.
Uh, we talked about this whenit was removed, um with one ui
6.1.1.
This happened back in july, actually, when the foldables
(05:44):
came out, we discovered thatthere was no longer GIF capture
in Smart Select.
And we talk about this.
Show.
You like the GIF capture, right, tori?
I do.
You use it quite a lot.
So if you haven't seen it yet Iknow some people might not have
seen it yet you can go to ourarticle.
I'll drop it in the show notesand find the version number.
Go to our article.
(06:05):
I'll drop it in the show notesand find the version number, but
the version number is 5.8.56.4.
It is an update to SamsungCapture, which is the name of
the update, the name of the appthat controls Smart Select.
It is a stage rollout, but itlooks like today it's rolling
out more widely to everybody.
I got it yesterday, which wasthe 17th, and it hadn't rolled
out to many people.
I got lucky.
I was able to make a videoearly.
(06:26):
Usually I'm not lucky and I getit late.
Samsung does a stage rollout, which means you don't know when
you're going to get it.
Some people get it like alittle people at a time.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
They trickle it out
like a slow trickle, like a
faucet that's leaking and thennot like a big stream of water.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
They just a little
bit at a time.
So it's frustrating because youknow if you're waiting on an
update that you really want, itcould take you a long time.
Someone else might have it andyou don't have it.
It's just the way it goes.
Also, samsung Capture is not anapplication.
This is kind of weird and acouple of people asked me about
this on my video.
I was going to put this in theQ&A but since it's relevant to
(07:01):
this, we'll just go ahead andtalk about it.
Some Samsung apps are notsearchable in the Galaxy Store
Very weird.
So certain Samsung apps on yourphone and they're not just
system apps, some of them arejust ones that control specific
features, like Samsung Capture, which controls Smart Select.
If you don't have an update forit, you cannot go to the Galaxy
(07:24):
Store and search for it.
So, like right here on the S24FE, you know, if I go in here
and I try to search for SamsungCapture, you won't find it
unless there's an update.
So let's try to do it right nowand I can show you what it
shows if you actually search forit.
If you search for SamsungCapture, see nothing it brings
(07:46):
up Smart Switch.
Samsung Mobile, all these otherSamsung apps, but it doesn't
tell you that Samsung Captureexists.
But once you have an updateit'll be there in the update
section.
So a lot of people are like yeah, it's very strange and honestly
, people are asking me do I knowwhy Samsung hides some of these
applications from the searchview in the galaxy store?
I have absolutely no idea.
(08:07):
It's very strange.
It is certain system apps andthen other ones that control
small features, like all thegood luck apps you can pretty
much search, but the ones thatcontrol certain features you may
not be able to.
So if you don't have the updateyet and you're kind of looking
(08:27):
in the Galaxy Store and youdon't see the update, then it
doesn't mean that you don't haveSmart Capture.
Some people are saying, oh well, I don't have this app at all.
That's not what it means.
It just means that you can'tsearch for the app.
You do have it and once it getsupdates it'll be under the
Update tab.
So there's actually four newfeatures here.
(08:47):
They brought back the GIFcapture.
They brought the pin featureback to the main menu.
So basically, when you crop animage or you create a GIF using
Smart Capture or using SmartSelect, you can now pin that
thing right to your screen so itstays there.
It's like if you crop a littleimage or you make a gif, it'll
stay there while you browsearound other stuff that's now
(09:10):
like front and center.
It used to be hidden behindanother menu, so that's no
longer the case.
The third one is you can nowdrag the selected area to adjust
the position so that it'seasier to find what it is you're
looking for.
Remember this new version ofSmart Select?
It basically uses AI todetermine what it is you want,
(09:32):
and people didn't like thateither, because it wouldn't let
them force select like an areathey wanted.
It was like whatever AI thinksis best for you is like what you
get, and people were upsetabout that, which I understand.
So now you can actually likedrag the area and you can modify
the area that AI wanted.
So that's another improvementthey made, and then they also
made it.
So now you can just touch on anarea instead of drawing around
(09:57):
it, and AI will try to select itbased on just a touch instead
of a circle or whatever you dowith your finger around an area.
Yeah, some type of gesture.
Yeah, so I mean, this is nice, they obviously listen.
There are a couple issues herestill that I found when I was
doing the video on it, andthere's a video on my channel if
you want to go watch it and seehow the new version works.
(10:18):
One if you're using YouTube towatch a video and you try to
create a GIF using this feature,if you have a video playing and
you open the new Smart Select,it automatically minimizes the
video to the pop-up view, whichmakes it very tiny in the bottom
right corner.
So the GIF you make is notgoing to be good because it's a
tiny little piece.
(10:38):
You can't keep it in thedefault YouTube view.
In order to get the defaultYouTube view, you have to first
pause the video, open the GIFcapture feature in SmartSelect
and then, once you open the GIFcapture feature and it's open
with the menu, the record buttonis there.
Then you can press play on thevideo, then press record on
SmartSelect.
(10:59):
But because the video isalready playing, you might miss
part of the thing you wanted torecord because you have to press
the record button after.
So that's not really great.
I don't know.
I think this has to do with theway they're implementing Smart
Select now Instead of you know.
Before, when it lived as itsown app, it was able to
(11:19):
basically draw over and notforce that pop-up view.
But the way they'reimplementing it now is like an
extension of the Edge panel.
It's not really its own appanymore in some sense, and I
want to dig into this furtherwith some people who are
developers.
So next week I might try tohave an article or a video on
Sammy Guru and talk to peoplewho know a little more about
this than I do.
But I'm pretty sure this is notjust a problem on Google's side.
(11:43):
This is a problem on google'sside.
This is a problem samsung andgoogle.
Right, they they google the waythey implement the pop-up view
and the way samsung isimplementing smart select.
They don't play nice togetherand so it's forcing the window
to be minimized to a pop-up viewin youtube if you try to make
uh, something with smart selectwhen you have a video playing.
So if you wanted the exactsmart Select we had four months
(12:07):
ago, it's not really back fully, because before the old Smart
Select worked fine.
If you had YouTube video openand you open Smart Select, it
didn't require you to close thatvideo.
There was really no issueutilizing that, so yeah, but
otherwise some of the otherimprovements are good.
I'm sure they'll take morefeedback into consideration.
(12:28):
With this, I think the positivething is Samsung does take
feedback, whereas a lot of othermanufacturers Apple for
instance they don't really carewhat their users say, they just
tell you what you?
Yeah, they just tell you what itis that you need and they're
like you're going to do whateverwe think is best for you.
At least Samsung, they read thefeedback.
(12:50):
Obviously, people complained alot about it Starting in July,
when this rolled out threemonths, they fixed it and got a
fix.
Apple does not respond in realtime to their users' complaints.
They couldn't care less aboutthat.
So it is definitely not thesame situation with Samsung, and
so we appreciate that.
So are you glad Smart Select isback here, tori?
Speaker 2 (13:13):
I am Just a few
thoughts.
I was actually kind of thinkingI like everything with it being
back along with the updates andstuff, but it just kind of
seems like, if you really don'tknow which is, you know, I think
everything that we have thewonderful Sammy Guru here to
help us navigate throughout this.
(13:34):
But I just feel like user, youknow, usability-wise and I know
we talked about this before hereon the podcast it just doesn't
feel all like user-friendly.
You know, I know we talkedabout this before here on the
podcast it just doesn't feel alluser-friendly.
And maybe it's just because theGoogle and the Samsung are
trying to figure out, like theYouTube thing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
And some people said,
well, yeah, you could download
the YouTube video and then playit in the video player and do it
.
Well, yeah, that's a lot ofextra work.
It is a lot of extra work.
Who's downloading a youtubevideo just so they can make a
gift?
That's even more work than youknow.
You could already create a gifwithout smart select by doing
that level of work becauseremember, I showed you guys
using the gallery.
If you already have the videoon your device, you can create a
(14:17):
gif using galleries, gifcreators.
So the whole point of smartselect is that it makes it
faster.
That's there, and you can do itwhile you're watching the video
.
And obviously, youtube is theplace where the most people in
the world are watching theirvideos, so it's not like it's
just like a little deal.
People are like, well, it'sonly YouTube.
Well, okay.
But that's like where 99% ofpeople watch their videos.
That is very true.
That's like you know.
(14:38):
That's a pretty big deal.
It's not like it's some nichevideo site where people are
watching these five videos outof the billions of people on the
planet.
It's like people are watchingbillions of minutes, or seconds
of video every week.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
That is like the
go-to place.
It's kind of crazy.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
I mean, I think the
fact that this is not working
properly on YouTube is kind of abig problem.
No, I thoroughly agree.
Okay, so hopefully they willfix that.
I definitely think they willmake some improvements there,
but we'll have to see when orhow long it takes them to do
that.
All right, moving right along, next we have some uh hardware
(15:16):
news here for you guys.
Unfortunately not us hardwarenews, because this is news about
the Galaxy Z Fold SpecialEdition launch date.
Samsung officially shared theinvite for the press event with
media, not in the US, so notwith us or with any other US
media, but with the Korean mediain their home country of South
(15:39):
Korea.
They shared a invite that saysthe Galaxy Z Fold Special
Edition will arrive on October21st.
Well, they didn't say thatexplicitly.
The invite actually says joinus for the unveiling of a new
Galaxy with another innovationon October 21st.
It has a newsroom post alongwith an 11-second video which I
(16:01):
will play here for you guys soyou can take a look at it.
It has a person walking with anenvelope, knocks on a door.
They slide it under there andyou open it and you see the
phone.
They open this thing.
It looks like a piece of paperbut it's actually the Z Fold
Special Edition and it saysyou're invited 10-21.
So obviously that is telling usthat we will have the special
(16:25):
edition z-fold launching on the21st in korea.
But we also know that it's notcoming here to the us, it's not
coming to europe, not coming toany other global markets except
for china and korea.
So I mean, how excited are ourviewers, our listeners, going to
be about this?
I don't really know.
I'm sure some people areexcited just because they like
(16:48):
new tech, which I like new techas well.
But if you're in the US, it'shard to get super excited
because obviously you're notgoing to own one and you're
never probably going to see oneunless maybe you see me on the
streets because I am going toimport one.
It's going to be very expensive,I'm sure um I I think they've
(17:08):
said the equivalent cost inkorea in us dollars will be
around 2500 for retail and I'llreally buy it on ebay and
they'll mark that up to 3000 forsure, plus I'll have to pay
shipping and whatever.
But I mean the tech looksreally impressive.
The phone is going to be 4.9millimeters when unfolded and
10.6 millimeters thick whenfolded.
(17:30):
That is quite a bit thinnerthan the Z Fold 6, which is 5.6
millimeters and 12.1 millimeters.
So particularly when it isfolded, it's 1.5 millimeters
thinner, which is a very, verybig difference.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
And that's quite
large.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
That's actually about
a 20% decrease in overall
thickness, which doesn't seemlike a lot until you realize
that you know, foldables arevery thick by their nature, so
any decrease in the thickness, even a 5% decrease, is going to
be noticeable if you use it on adaily basis.
And then, of course, we talkedabout the other big improvement.
Everyone complains about thecamera on the Z Fold line.
(18:11):
Finally, they're going toupgrade the camera on this one,
200 megapixels, which isbasically the same camera that's
in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, hereis going to now appear on the Z
Fold Special Edition.
The other cameras, the UltraWide and the zoom, are not
supposed to be upgraded, butthey are upgrading the
under-display camera, the onefor the selfie, and that's going
(18:33):
to be dropped in favor of aless prominent display crease.
So basically, they're going toget rid of the under-display
camera but they will also havebasically a less crease in the
in the middle, which a lot ofpeople complain about.
That because they don't likethe way it looks.
Uh, because it's going to usethe ultra thin glass, the ufg
(18:54):
panel, which we talked aboutbefore, and this is an advanced
version of the utg panel foundon the fold six and other models
.
So TG panel found on the Fold 6and other models.
So very expensive but could beinteresting just to see because
for those of us in the US thiscould be a preview of what the Z
Fold 7 could be next year.
(19:17):
So even if this is not a phonethat you're obviously going to
probably buy yourself, for theaverage person it's not a phone
you should buy.
I'll reiterate that because oneit's going to cost a lot of
money to import it.
But then if you do spend $3,000to import it, you're not going
to have a warranty because youdidn't buy it from an official
retailer, from Samsung directly, and you're in another country.
They don't honor the warrantyif you import it.
(19:40):
That's true of every phone youimport.
I've been importing phones sinceI started YouTube and sometimes
that's a problem.
It has been a problem whereI've had a phone have an issue
and I just have to eat the cost.
There's nothing I can do aboutit because you can't get
warranty service and then alsobecause it's from Korea, there's
going to be some 5G bands thatdon't work in the US.
(20:00):
So you're not going to get 5Geverywhere, no matter what city
you live in.
Even in Phoenix, which is a bigcity.
It just doesn't have the bandsin the phone itself, so you
won't be able to get 5G.
So definitely not a phone thatyou want to import as your main
device.
Now, if you just have a ton ofmoney and you don't care and you
want a second phone to play, with, then sure.
(20:27):
Or if you of course, like myself, you can make money by
importing it and actually make aprofit potentially off of the
content that you create with it,then that it makes sense.
If I couldn't do that, Iwouldn't buy it, because it's
basically not going to be myprimary, because I want good 5G
coverage everywhere, because ofcourse I have a life and
obviously I need to be able todo work with my phone.
My phone is not just a thingthat I use to create content.
Just like everybody else, I useit for personal stuff, I use it
(20:48):
for doing other business tasksoutside of just creating my
Samsung content.
I use it for everything else.
What do you think, tori?
Overall, I mean, this lookspretty cool.
If you go back to the actualthing, you can see if I can
pause it here, right here, you.
You see right there how it'skind of.
Let me close the YouTube ad,because when you're in browser
it doesn't matter if you haveYouTube.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Premium, Even though
I have YouTube Premium.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
they still show me
ads in the browser.
You see here, that's the actualphone itself.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
The invite is on the
phone.
I can make it full screen there.
You're invited 10, 21, 21, 24,samsungcom.
What I think is interesting isit says samsungcom, but of
course that redirects you toyour local samsung website.
So if you're in korea, samsungcom takes you to the
korean site.
Yeah, a lot of people weresaying well, does that mean it's
going to stream live on the usversion of samsungcom?
(21:38):
And the answer is probably not, because why would you?
Why would you want to advertisethe event if people can't?
buy it, because they'll bepretty pissed off if they can't
right, like, why would youstream a launch to someone who
can't purchase?
That's just going to frustratepeople.
So yeah, I mean what do youthink it looks really nice.
I mean, if you look at this too, you know this event is on a
white background and you reallycan't see the crease of that A
(22:01):
little bit in the middle, butdefinitely not as bad as the
z-fold six.
What do you think?
Speaker 2 (22:06):
yeah, like uh, for me
actually, uh, you kind of
already said it, but uh, I wasjust thinking, you know, even
though, like, it's going to bein the korean market, uh, this
could really be a good previewto what to expect from for next
year's phone, um, and so I'mreally excited for it, like, and
obviously I already know it'sprobably going to be really
(22:28):
expensive another luxury uhstyle phone, but you know, I
think for us here in the us andalso in other markets, uh, I
think this is a pretty goodphone to be looking forward to.
Uh, if this is what we trulyget next year.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
yeah, yeah, I mean, I
think if they took this phone
and they upgraded the wide angleand the telephoto camera it
would be fine to call that the ZFold 7 and release it Boom.
Yeah, I mean, I don't think theyhave to necessarily do too much
else because this phone almostalmost takes care of all of my
(23:04):
real complaints about the z-foldsix.
It improves the primary camera.
It gets rid of the displaycrease a little bit.
It makes the cover displaywider.
It makes the overall thingthinner when it's folded and
unfolded.
Um, it actually makes the innerdisplay slightly wider too, so
you get a bigger canvas whenit's when it's unfolded.
Uh, it's using the new type ofglass, which hopefully will
(23:26):
increase the durability as well.
I mean, there's not a lot tocomplain about with this phone.
There might even be somesurprises that we haven't seen
yet, who knows?
Uh, I'll definitely be watchingthe event, which is unfortunate
because it's in korea and Ithink it's at 10 am korean time,
which is 2 a am in the morning,I think in Arizona.
Oh, no, no, actually it's alittle bit better.
(23:48):
I think it's maybe 9 pm.
Because they're actually 14, or15 hours ahead of us, so if I
watch it I might actually nothave to lose sleep.
That would be good.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
Yes, that would be
good.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
I mean it's not
really as exciting as a US
launch, because I won't be ableto go on and order the product
right away, because I will haveto wait for the Korean resellers
to list them on eBay, whichwill probably take a couple days
.
They don't usually get them upright away.
Sometimes they do If they knowSamsung will be sending them to
(24:24):
them right away.
Then they'll list them rightaway.
But I can't guarantee that I'llbe able to get the phone that
day ordered that day.
It'll probably take a littlebit of time.
Yeah, it'll probably take awhile, but if you guys are
interested in this phone, I willhave full content on my YouTube
channel doing unboxing.
I usually don't do unboxingsbut for this one I will, because
it's a special phone and we'regetting to see something that's
very different.
I'll have a full comparisonvideo to the Fold 6, which I
(24:46):
think everybody will want to see.
That.
I'll have some camera samplevideo.
We'll do a lot of coverage onthis phone because, well, I've
got to get the money back that Ipay for it.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
For a lot of the
other phones that we get back
that $3,000 because I'm nottrading anything in.
I'm just going to be coming offof $3,000 of the business money
to make this back.
But I'm willing to take therisk because it'll be a fun one
(25:16):
to look into.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
I'm really excited.
I mean, I'll probably never ownthe phone, but you'll get to
see it, yes, yes, but I'll getto see it.
And you know, um, I I'm justlike, I really like just the
whole folding aspect and likewhat the future is to come with
these foldable phones.
So I do think this is like whenwe talk about innovation, um,
(25:38):
and like kind of going back tolike those tms on innovative,
like innovation routes, likethis is what I kind of picture
like moving, and actually twothings about that that I want to
mention.
That's actually not Samsunginnovation roots this is what I
kind of picture moving forward, and actually two things about
that that I want to mention.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
That's actually not
in the show notes, but I had
forgotten to put in there One.
If you guys want to ask mequestions about the Z Fold
Special Edition or any otherSamsung stuff, we have a brand
new Sammy Guru Discord serverthat we just opened like a week
ago.
So far I think we've got like50 or 60 members over there, but
we'll keep growing it.
People who are having funtalking Samsung, doing some
(26:10):
Samsung memes.
We're posting photography fromour cameras, talking about the
podcast.
We have a channel to talk aboutthe podcast, to discuss what me
and Tori get into.
Every week when I get new phones.
You guys can come over thereand kind of do some Q&A.
I've been hanging over therequite a bit, so if you want to
chat with me, come and join theDiscord.
We can talk over there.
When I get the Z Fold SpecialEdition, I'm happy to like
(26:31):
answer any questions people haveabout it in the Discord.
It's a lot easier there thanvia email or Twitter or X
whatever, because you can have areal like kind of chat set up
on Discord and I kind of like itand I kind of like it.
It's going to be a good placefor everyone to hang out and
eventually we'll get it to whereit needs to be, I think by the
end of the year.
My goal is to try to get to1,000 members on the Discord by
the end of the year.
I think no problem.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
We should be able to
do that.
Yeah, no problem.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
With the S25 and One
UI 7 coming out, we'll easily
get the Discord to over 1,000 bythe other thing is Samsung.
I made a video on this as well.
Samsung came out in theirearnings call I think this was
right before I went to Vegas andthey apologized to their
investors for their lack ofinnovation.
They said we're sorry, wehaven't been doing what we did
(27:17):
in the past and it's caused ourearnings to be less than
projected, and we promise we'regoing to pick up the innovation.
And they were talking abouteverything across Samsung, not
just mobile, but they weretalking about their chips, like
Samsung's foundry, where theymanufacture the different trips
and stuff that they createdisplays, all their other
consumer products, mobile,everything.
And they were saying, basically, we know we kind of dropped the
(27:39):
ball with that and we're goingto do better for our investors,
for our customers and everythingwith that, and we're going to
do better for our investors, forour customers and everything.
So Samsung is aware of whatpeople have said about them kind
of not not going out and andreally pushing the envelope
anymore, which is kind of funnybecause this Z fold special
edition one has is an envelopein the thing.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
So maybe they're
trying, maybe they're.
I think that's, I think that'sexactly what they were saying to
be honest with you.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
Yeah, I don't think
that was an accident.
I meant to mention that earlier, but I kind of just segued into
it because I'm just a master ofthe segue.
That's why, yeah, he is.
But I think that is actuallywhy it's there.
They're pushing the envelope, Imean they said they were going
to do that they said in theirapology to the investors.
In that video I made, I talkedabout it.
I read the statement from thechairman of Samsung Electronics
(28:28):
and that's one thing.
He says we're going to push theenvelope and they pushed it, so
we'll see what happens at thatevent.
Let's see if they mentionanything about pushing the
envelope.
I know Up next, some SamsungWallet news.
I don't get too much SamsungWallet news, so this is kind of
interesting.
Samsung Wallet now has a newfeature where you can tap to
transfer cash between twoSamsung phones.
(28:51):
Apple Cash already has this oniPhones, and so I guess Samsung
felt the need that we kind ofneed it too.
It's a cool feature.
I would use it because I have alot of people.
Obviously, I know a lot ofpeople who have Samsung phones.
Some people are like oh, I knowa lot of people who have
Samsung phones.
Some people are like, oh, Ihave a lot of iPhone friends and
I use the only one with aSamsung, Not me, because I don't
surround myself with people.
No, I'm just kidding.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
I'm definitely the
first.
Everyone has Apple.
I'm the only one.
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
But see, if me and
Tori go out to dinner and he
picks up the towel, I can tap totransfer some cash to pay Tori
back for half the meal.
Now, yeah, we can do it and mywife uses it.
So I mean I would use it.
I would use it because I mean Ihave a lot of people who use
Samsung.
My mother-in-law uses it, mymother uses it.
I don't even know anyone.
Oh, I do know my brother-in-lawuses an iPhone, so we tried to
get him to convert guy.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
But so, like uh, to
do this would you just need to
have like a samsung pay set up.
Samsung wallet, yeah, orsamsung, yeah, they keep
changing the name of the damnthing I don't know why they do
it.
Google has done it too.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
It was like it was
like google pay, google wallet g
pay.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
People are like what
the hell?
Speaker 1 (29:56):
no one knows what it
is that's why you know people
get so upset sometimes withsamsung android stuff is because
there's no consistency.
Apple Pay has been Apple Paysince the beginning and so
that's why when you go to thestore all the signs say it takes
Apple Pay.
A lot of them don't even putthe Android Samsung thing
because they have to keepchanging their sign.
So much.
They don't have the budget tochange it.
(30:17):
Is it GPay?
Is it Google Wallet?
Is it Samsung Pay?
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Is it Samsung Wallet?
What the?
Speaker 1 (30:22):
hell are these things
called?
No one knows.
So they're just like, well,we'll just take that part of the
sign away, and then everyonewill know that Apple Pay means
it also takes the other ones aswell, and so we just have to
deal with it, so we have to takesome responsibility for that.
They keep changing the name ofthese services, so you can't
really blame Target that theydon't have Samsung Pay accepted
because they don't necessarilyknow what it's called and pay
(30:43):
accepted because they don'tnecessarily know what it's
called.
Yeah, sure, and it's Samsungand Google's fault too, not just
the companies that take thesepayments.
So anyway, yeah, basically itenables you to send and receive
money by tapping the backs ofyour phone.
It uses NFC to connect the twoterminals and transfer the funds
.
Select a bank accountregistered on your Samsung
wallet, enter the password tounlock it, enter the transfer
amount and then tap it to yourfriend's phone.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
Okay, cool, I like
that.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
The system encrypts
the beneficiary account number
and the sender only sees thelast four digits.
They can set up arepresentative account to
receive money without unlockingtheir phones.
So this is really great.
I definitely will use it whenit comes out.
The unfortunate news is it'snot here in the US yet.
It's only in South Korea.
(31:28):
It will be coming to more banksand globally over the next year
, so it will be in the US.
But this is another one ofthose things where,
unfortunately, we just had the ZFold Special Edition, which is
Korea and China exclusive Rightnow.
This is basically like vaporwarein the US we don't have it.
It will come, but you got torealize some people get
(31:50):
frustrated with this.
I'm more frustrated with thehardware not coming here,
because you got to understandwith something like a wallet,
there's a lot of governmentregulation required.
People don't think about this, and this is something that Max
was talking about too and wewere chatting with him about AI
stuff.
There's a lot of regulationthat goes into financial
services.
So if you roll something out in, for instance, if you roll
(32:15):
something out in Korea, or youroll something out in Europe,
you can't necessarily also thenjust port it right over to the
US.
You've got to deal withgovernmental restrictions, fdic,
all the individual banks, allthe encryption protocols that
are required in the differentcountries.
It's a lot of work and even fora nearly trillion dollar
company like Samsung it takessome time.
(32:36):
Even when you've got whateverthey have like 190,000 global
employees that still takes timeto work on those things.
So it is going to take sometime and I think probably by the
middle of 2025,.
The US is a priority market forSamsung, so we will be the
second market to get it afterKorea.
Almost certainly we won't befar down the line, but it will
(32:57):
take some time because of allthe laws here.
Now they did say they'llcontinue to expand features that
are highly useful in daily life, such as account addition, atm
deposit and withdrawal andtransfer services, so that users
can easily enjoy convenientmobile financial life with
Samsung Wallet.
So this is very interesting tome because what they're saying
is theoretically this would takea lot of certification.
(33:19):
So again, this definitelywouldn't be next year.
This would be like multipleyears down the road.
Theoretically, I could have mypersonal account, my business
account for Sammy Guru andwhatever else bank accounts in
my Samsung wallet and I couldjust roll up to one of those
banks' ATMs, tap on the accountI want NFC, tap it to the ATM
thing and withdraw my money, andso then I don't even really
(33:41):
need to carry cards, even to getcash.
Not only can I pay with myphone using debit or credit, I
can also now use it to get casheverywhere, and I wouldn't have
(34:04):
to carry around multiple debitcards and potentially multiple
credit cards based on whether ornot you're using your business
account or you're using yourpersonal.
So I think this is really cool.
Would you use these featuresonce we get them?
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Yeah, I am actually
really excited and it's kind of
funny.
I stopped by a Wells Fargo ATMon the way here and I saw
someone paying, you know, paying, uh, or not paying, but like
trying to access their um bankaccount through the ATM, using,
like, their phone to pay the tap.
And you know, I just really feellike this is a very um, uh or
(34:42):
intuitive thing that a lot ofpeople will go towards because,
like kind of like what we saidbefore, like these phones, like
they're really like a way oflife and and we use them in our
daily commutes like all the timeand and and again, like this is
like such, like a big, likeinvestment that you know, like
um, that we, as most people here, uh, on their the daily commute
(35:05):
, use them for paying with CashApp Venmo, and I just think this
would just be such a cool thing.
I am so excited to use this.
I just got to find more Samsungpeople to use it with, but I am
really excited and I think alot of people would be really
excited once we are able to getthrough all legislative and
stuff to actually bring thisover here.
(35:27):
I think this would be like abig game changer for Samsung for
sure.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
I mean, what would be
really nice is if you could tap
it between Samsung and iPhone.
But we know Apple is nevergoing to.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Yeah, we got to make
that money.
We might as well forget aboutthat.
Yeah, that's sure.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
That's never going to
happen.
Just like you know, being ableto use iMessage on Android or
use your Apple Watch with aSamsung phone None of those
things are ever going to happen.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
So you might as well
forget about all of that.
Even better.
On the watch, exactly, yeah, yeah, if you could tap watch to
watch, yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
I mean, I'm
particularly excited for the
fact that if you could have allyour accounts, I could then tap
at any ATM, pick which account Iwant to get cash out of.
I don't have to carry any cards, basically Because you still
need to carry your debit card ifyou want to get cash, even if
you have your phone.
But now I could get cash andpay with my cards pretty much
everywhere, because everywherehas NFC.
I only need to carry my licenseand my medical insurance card
(36:20):
now in my wallet and Samsung hasrolled out card now in my
wallet and Samsung has rolledout.
I already have it, actually, because Arizona was the first
state to get it, which wasreally cool.
I have my license in my Samsungwallet too.
Oh yeah, you can put yourArizona license in your Samsung
wallet.
And most medical insurancecompanies do allow you to have
like a digital version of yourcard.
Unfortunately those are prettymuch on their app.
(36:41):
Samsung hasn't gotten thoseintegrated yet, but eventually
they'll integrate those, I think, into Wallet and then you don't
even need a wallet.
You just carry your phone.
You've got your healthinsurance cards, your debit
cards, your credit cardsEverything's in Samsung Wallet
your license, and then there yougo.
But the thing is, you know?
Speaker 2 (36:57):
I get annoyed because
doctor's offices they're really
like stuck in like the 1980sbecause they still want to make
like a hard copy of yourinsurance card and I'm like I
don't have one.
I don't carry one, sorry, youknow, and that's the problem.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
We got to get it
going, you know, so that we can
streamline this, because a lotof other areas are not on board
with the tech revolution.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
That's for sure.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
There's a long time
where, like even Target didn't
have like NFC terminals.
I was like what is going on?
Speaker 2 (37:29):
that was like some
stores like as recently as, like
a couple years ago during covid, they didn't have nfc terminals
like what the hell, or evenlike all of walmart.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Yeah, I mean, they're
all all.
Walmart doesn't have nfc either.
You can't tap to pay yet andthat, and they make so much
money.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
That's always my
thing every time I go there you
make so much money.
Why don't you just do it?
Speaker 1 (37:41):
They're like the
fourth biggest company in the US
, and they can't get NFCterminals.
What's going on?
Anyway, I think this is a coolfeature.
It's not in the US yet.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
The theme of today is
I'm really excited.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
The theme of today is
things that Are coming but you
can't have yet, because they'renot here or the updates aren't
available.
That's like the number onetheme of today's episode of the
Sammy Guru podcast.
Speaker 2 (38:02):
So I'm sorry.
I think you just found yourlittle clip.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Yeah For X, that's
yeah that's also going to be the
title.
That's going to be the title ofthis week's episode Things you
can't have Samsung yeah, samsungreleasing things you can't have
Dot have.

All right, we're back from thebreak.
Let's go ahead and talk aboutTab S10 Ultra story really
quickly.
I actually have the Tab S10Ultra over here, as I said, and
(39:52):
in the hardware segment I'lltalk a little bit more about my
impressions of the new processorand everything like that,
because I know some people areinterested in how the MediaTek
is performing in there becausesince they went away from
Snapdragon but some prettyunfortunate software news the
Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is onlygoing to receive quarterly
security updates.
That is not really great for atablet that costs so much money
(40:19):
I traded in my Tab S9 Ultra.
It's like a laptop.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Yeah, yeah, exactly,
I traded in my Tab S9 Ultra.
It's like a laptop.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
I traded in the Tab S9 Ultrathis is the one I got the big
boy model, the one terabyte, andthis thing cost about $15.99, I
think.
I traded in my Tab S9 Ultra, soI got it for like I got a $900
trading credit, so I got it forlike $6.99.
But that's a very expensiveprice.
I mean, the base model is $1199.
(40:42):
Actually, I put that in thearticle here and they're only
going to give you quarterlyupdates guaranteed.
That is not great.
Remember.
The phones pretty much getmonthly updates and obviously
this tablet costs more than alot of Samsung's phones.
So I think it's unfortunate thatthey're only going to offer
quarterly updates.
So I think it's unfortunatethat they're only going to offer
quarterly updates.
(41:02):
That shows kind of that Samsungdeprioritizes their tablets
over their phones, whereas Applekind of keeps the iPad and the
iPhone on the same level playingfield.
I do think this is kind of adownside that would make.
If I was considering buying aSamsung Tab, I would probably be
less inclined to do so if I sawthis.
Obviously, most averageconsumers probably aren't going
(41:23):
to see this because it's buriedin the fine print.
I mean, that's why I had theguys write an article about it,
to bring it to people'sattention, just so they know
about this.
But a lot of people probablydidn't notice this before they
bought it.
What do you think about thestory?
Do you think Samsung shouldprioritize?
I mean, this is their flagshiptablet do?
Speaker 2 (41:39):
you think it's?
Fair to assume that it shouldget the same kind of monthly
update treatment that we get onthe phones well, yeah, um, and
because, uh, looking at it,obviously it's massive, and even
looking at it on the samsungwebsite, let me grab it.
Uh is um, yeah, yeah, bringthat big boy over here.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
Check it out, right
here.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
You know it's a very
premium.
I mean like that looks verypremium.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
It's absolutely
massive.
Holding it in portrait is justlike.
It's very weird.
Like I told you guys, one timeI did a lecture when I was at
the university like this becauseI forgot my smaller tablet.
And the students were like whatthe hell is going on?
Because it's massive.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
Look how you're gonna
hold it if you want to check it
out.
Yeah, and I I really like theweight.
Um, this is a very very nicepiece of hardware here very nice
.
It is um kind of almost likereminds me of like a surface pro
, uh, but like a bigger version.
Got the s pen too on the back.
Well, actually I have it.
I have the s.
I was wondering what that was.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
Yeah this is a.
This is the official samsung uhthe case it's the official
samsung case.
Yeah, it's got a little spot forthe s pen on the back.
I have the s pen in there on mydesk because I've been using it
to take notes.
The other day I obviously keepthis like right on my desk
because it's too big.
I'm not going to care.
This is not a portable tablet.
I keep it there for media, forfor note-taking with the S Pen
and multitasking.
(42:58):
I keep my socials up all day onthis, so that way if I want to
respond to someone on socials Idon't have to open my phone,
because it's right there infront of my laptop on here.
You can have four windows, fivewindows open on this.
Yeah, easily, easily, for sure,so yeah, so I mean, yeah, don't
you think that maybe theyshould give the same update?
Update support well, yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:16):
So like, uh, actually
kind of have a question about
that.
Actually, um, because I'm not ayou know, active like samsung,
like by you know everything.
I don't have everything ofsamsung, mostly just to have
phones and phones, um, but Iknow we talked about this on the
show before that uh, and myquestion is mostly is there a
big um, you, a population ofpeople that are out here buying
(43:43):
the Tab S's?
You know, because, you know, looking at it from Samsung,
maybe they're like, well, we'retrying to get the Tab S up to
our phone level.
So like, yeah, you know, we'regoing to be pumping out those
updates, you know, to the phones, but you know, they don't
probably don't see a need toupdate the tablets as much.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
Yeah, I hear what
you're saying, playing devil's
advocate.
I think that's probably whatthey think is that, since it's
not making them as much revenue, why dedicate as much developer
resources to developing, pushingout those updates, because that
does take extra time.
There's obviously a muchsmaller demographic of people
using Samsung tablets versusphones.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
I mean Samsung's big.
I mean like we talked about itbefore, but like we want
on-the-go.
Yeah, I don't really know,that's not really on-the-go.
I mean I love it because it'sway like overkill.
Speaker 1 (44:34):
As a Samsung fan, I
like it, but I mean, I think
they need to reevaluate thesizes of their flagship tablet
lineup.
They have the smaller Tab, S10+, but that's still 12.4 inches,
which is still big.
That's basically as big as thelarge iPad Pro.
They don't have an 11-inchoffering.
They used to Remember theydeleted it.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
They had the base
model.
Yeah, I remember that they gotrid of it this year.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
I don't know why.
Because I feel like people wantmore portable and also even
like a mini, like a Tab S10 mini, because Apple just released a
new version of the iPad mini andthat's one of their most sold
tablets.
Speaker 2 (45:08):
It's an 8-inch tablet
.
Speaker 1 (45:15):
But I think Samsung's
thing is they don't want to
sell a mini tablet because thenthat would cannibalize the
foldable sales, because if youwant a mini tablet, they want
you to buy the z fold six, because that has a bigger margin
than a mini tablet probablywould and also has more, they
could probably sell more unitsof that.
Um, if they push people to thatwho want a small tablet, that's
probably their idea.
But I think you're right.
I just think it's a shame and Ithink unfortunately, since they
don't want to devote theresources to monthly updates,
(45:37):
that's going to push more peopletowards using a Samsung phone.
Yeah, but then an iPad is theirtablet, which isn't good
because you don't want peopledipping their toes into the
Apple ecosystem, because thenthey might decide to stay and
also get the phone and thenthey're completely gone.
Speaker 2 (45:53):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (45:53):
You don't really.
You know there are a lot ofpeople who have a Samsung phone
and an Apple iPad as theirtablet, because the iPad just
has more support.
Apple puts more support intothe iPad, it's just a fact.
The Tab S10 Ultra I love itbecause obviously Apple still
refuses to do real multitasking.
So even though I like my iPadas a multitasking machine, it's
(46:14):
completely useless.
What I do with the Tab S10Ultra you can't do with the iPad
because you can't have pop-upwindows.
You can only have twoside-by-side windows, you can't
have three.
So like the multitasking I dowith the Tavistan Ultra is not
really possible, because Iusually have like X and Facebook
and Instagram and YouTubeStudio up in pop-up windows and
then I'll have like the browserand my notes app side by side
(46:36):
and so I can have all that sixapps simultaneously.
I only have two on the iPad.
So I mean personally for me,for my use case for using that
big tablet, it works, but Idon't know the tablet's a weird
thing for Samsung.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Well, you know, kind
of also bringing back when you
mentioned the price, like forwhat is it?
$1,500?
$1,599 for the top model?
Yeah, yeah, 16.
Um, you know that's a prettypenny.
They should be pumping out someupdates for it, uh, on a
(47:10):
monthly.
Uh, yeah, yeah, on a monthlybasis because, like that is a
premium piece of hardware yeahum, but and even then, like I
would say, for the averageconsumer, they're probably
getting this as like a birthdayor a christmas present, but,
like you know, like they stillwould want you know, like
something really like all right,I'm getting a monthly update,
(47:31):
I've um, I'm, you know, I'm upwith the times, not like a
quarterly update, you know, because that could be like
whenever within and also it'sfor security.
Speaker 1 (47:40):
So if there's a
critical security patch in.
January, then you're not goingto get it until April.
True.
So, like oh well, if thatvulnerability affects your Tab
S10, then oh, too bad.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
Yeah, I don't think
that's going to sit.
Speaker 1 (47:52):
Well, I guess you'll
just get that fixed in April.
Sorry to tell you, but thatvulnerability will be patched
later.
Yeah, your phone will be good, but we'll wait until April to
patch the $1,600 tablet that youbought from us.
Yeah, yeah, I'm not a big fan ofit, I mean for budget tablets.
(48:13):
I'm okay with that, becauseSamsung makes hundreds of
devices.
They can't update all of themon monthly schedule because even
with 190,000 employees orwhatever schedule, because even
with 190,000 employees orwhatever you know, it takes
thousands of employees justdedicated to doing these
software updates monthly to workon and push them out for every
model.
Because remember, this isimportant.
I always remind people of it.
People want to know, like, whycan't Samsung push the updates
and why can't Google push theupdates to every model at the
(48:33):
same time, like Apple does?
Apple makes their own hardwareand software and they only sell
like four different models ofphone.
Samsung sells like 40.
Hey, hey, hey.
Speaker 2 (48:47):
Hey, hey, hey.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
Google Assistant.
That's enough, jim and I.
I didn't ask you anything.
I'm talking here.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
I'm the expert on
this show, jim and I is trying
to give me some education, Idon't need any.
Speaker 1 (48:57):
I know what I'm
talking about Anyway samsung
makes like 50 different modelsof phones budget, mid-range,
flagship in a bunch of differentregions and a lot of them are
region specific skews.
Whether that's good or bad youcould debate, but it's
impossible to push out theupdate to every single model at
the same time.
Yeah, because, remember, theyalso don't make the hardware and
the software.
(49:17):
Google makes android, thensamsung customizes it to create
one ui, so they have to buildtheir software on top of android
, which is not their product,it's google's then customize
that and then make it fit withall these different types of
hardware that run the broadspectrum of, like you know, 1500
, $1,500 phone to $150 phone.
(49:39):
And Apple doesn't have that.
They don't, they don't have todeal with that.
So it's not reasonable.
You can keep saying like I wishit would happen.
It's like I wish I was going tobe GQ's man of the year, but
it's just not going to happen, like it's not in the cards.
Speaker 2 (49:53):
It's just not in the
cards for me.
Speaker 1 (49:59):
You know, like my
life is doing pretty, pretty
well, but that's just not in thecards for my particular journey
and so that's not going tohappen.
So people always say that inthe youtube comments too.
I read it a lot.
It's like I'm sorry that youwant that, but it's never going
to happen.
So you know, unless somethingmajor happens with the way
samsung does software, eitherthey quit using android and make
their own in-house solutionyeah or they stop offering so
many different models ofhardware and they just make the
(50:21):
S line and the fold line, theother two flagships which is
never going to happen, becausethey sell millions and millions
of units of mid-range and budgetin India and other markets.
That makes them too much money.
They won't stop doing that, butif they did, then maybe it
could happen.
But currently, as the scenariois, don't hold your breath,
that's never going to occur, yeah, no.
All right.
So the next thing is I don'teven know why I'm covering this
(50:44):
piece of news, because thisisn't news.
Someone decided that this wasnews.
I don't know if it was SamMobile or Sammy fans.
We covered it just so that wecould try to get some of the
search traffic, because that'sthe business side of this.
I think maybe Sammy fans pushthis out because they like to
cover a lot of like.
I don't want to be mean, butthey cover a lot of garbage.
That isn't really news.
So the One UI 7 beta is going tobe public, not just for
(51:05):
developers.
I guess someone got it in theirmind when Sally said that they
would cede the beta to youbecause we were at the developer
conference.
She said to all of you inDecember that maybe that meant
it was only going to be fordevelopers in December and we
weren't going to get to test itif you weren't a developer One.
Anybody can sign up as adeveloper so you could get it
(51:26):
anyway.
I think you have to pay alittle bit, because with Apple
you have to pay $99 a year, butit's not like you can't.
You can sign up.
It's not like you're going tohave a problem getting it, but
she also didn't mean that.
Very clearly, the beta hasnever been developer only
recently.
Yeah, I don't know who thoughtthis, so I guess they sammy fans
(51:48):
.
This is what this is like theirstrategy.
I'm going to start doing thisthey just go like to the
community forums, samsungcommunity forums, and they ask
the korean moderators like isthis true?
And then when they get a, themoderator some of them don't
even know.
They're just like some guy islike you know, he works for
Samsung.
Some of them are not evenreally full Samsung employees.
They're like you know, do itvolunteer?
He's like yeah, that's true.
(52:09):
And then they go and publish itas like a truth article.
I mean, we post some of thisstuff too, but only when it's
like been verified.
Try it with other things aswell, because you can't publish
every community forum reply Now,if it's been posted by them.
And then Ice Universe says, yeah, that's true, or some other
leakster, or we get anothersource that says, yeah, that's
probably going to happen.
Then we'll write somethingabout it you take that one to
(52:31):
the bank.
But I mean, I don't know.
We posted a story on thisbecause everybody else did, but
I kind of didn't want to.
To me it's all about makingsure we stay competitive.
I understand, I never had anydoubt that it was going to be
public.
But hey, if you were worriedthat in December you weren't
going to be able to get the betaunless you're a developer,
that's not true.
They confirmed that.
(52:51):
Well, the Samsung communitymoderators confirmed that, so I
don't even know how muchconfirmation all around this
story has got lots of problems.
No one ever doubted it that itwould be public.
But I promise you, if it's notpublic, if it's not public beta
in December, I will shave myhead on the podcast.
So, if they push out a beta, that's developer.
(53:12):
Only you guys can take it tothe bank.
You can mark it at 5505 inepisode 17.
I'll shave my head live on thepodcast.
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (53:22):
I guarantee you it
will indeed be a public beta.
Yeah, I don't see why not.
Speaker 1 (53:27):
Samsung also is
changing their mind on the One
UI 7 icon, so we talked aboutthis.
I didn't actually put the linkfor this to the site the story
on the site but I can go backand find it.
We've talked about this at SDC,when I got my hands on with the
phone that was running One UI7.0.
The icons people were not happywith these icons.
(53:47):
They're like what's going onwith these icons?
They just look ridiculous.
They all look disjointed.
Particularly, the one thatpeople hated the most was the
rainbow colored gallery icon.
People hated it, and so this isit right here.
Actually, that's the zoomed-inversion from my hands-on, people
were just appalled that Samsungwould potentially put this on
(54:08):
One UI 7.
And so, anyway, ice Universe,he chimed in and said in the
latest version of One UI 7,samsung has replaced multiple
icons such as gallery, phonecamera recorder, contacts,
samsung Notes, etc.
The new icons are morereasonable and better looking
than before.
Perhaps Samsung is keeping aneye on user feedback at all
(54:29):
times.
So basically he's suggestingthat people you know, after we
covered the leaks at SDC andeverybody else did everyone's
how much they hated them Samsungwas like oh well, let's go
ahead and change that, becauseno one likes that, which I had
actually crossed my mind.
We talked about this a coupleweeks ago when I came back from
STC.
You know, I was thinking maybeit's possible that maybe they
(54:50):
did like plant those phones atSTC, hoping someone would post
some leaks and then, yeah, howdoes the people feel?
yeah, and they just wanted tosee it because they didn't
really have everything running, but they had, like, the icons.
Maybe they're trying to getlike, they're trying to do like
a customer survey of like shouldwe keep these icons or not?
And they found out people hatedthem.
So the answer was no, theyshould not.
(55:12):
And then holly, who's anothersamsung influencer holly likes
tech anxious.
Holly is her twitter handle.
She said does the gallery stillhave the same colors, the
rainbow colors?
And ice universe responded no,changed it to a color tone
dominated by red, and so if youlook at the current gallery icon
, it is indeed dominated by red.
(55:35):
It's actually like a pinkish redright here yeah you can see
it's not really fully red, butit's pinkish red you guys can
see on your own phone, um, andso it's actually like a pinkish
red right here.
Yeah, you can see, it's notreally fully red, but it's
pinkish red you guys can see onyour own phone, um, and so it's
good to see that they're takinginto account the user feedback.
Um, I hope they change thecamera icon too, because I
didn't particularly like thatone.
Um, that one the one we havecurrently is good, but the one I
like it, yeah, the one they hadon the new one.
(55:56):
It basically looked like it wasa spy lens.
There was no camera thereanymore, it was basically
supposed to be the lens of thecamera, but it looked like you
were being spied on.
I think people didn't reallylike the implication of that, so
I think they got rid of that.
This guy who does renders overon X I bookmarked his.
Let's see if I can find it.
Where are my bookmarks Overhere?
(56:17):
This guy made some renders ofwhat the icons could look like,
based on Ice Universe's feedback.
So this column over here arethe possible ones for the
redesign.
So this is the ones I saw atSDC and these are the ones based
on Ice's replies that he thinkscould be what they're kind of
moving towards.
Speaker 2 (56:34):
So this is the one
that you have on your phone now.
And then this would bepotentially the new one for the
camera.
I actually like it.
It looks nice.
Me too, I think the leaked OneUI 7, for me it gives me iPhone,
Apple vibes.
Speaker 1 (56:50):
Yeah, it's like
iPhone, or the Chinese OEM
Android, like Xiaomi, yeah, kindof like that.
That's pretty much everyone'sgo.
I would like that one.
I kind of like that.
Speaker 2 (56:57):
That's pretty much
everyone's thing.
I would like that one Because I, like with the originals or
before, the One UI 7, the One UI6, these ones just kind of make
everything feel separate fromiPhone.
But I really like this concept.
If they really do go towardsthat.
I think it makes it a littlebit more updated.
Speaker 1 (57:19):
This guy is just a
graphic artist.
He's not a leaker so he doesn'tknow.
He just took the comments thatIce made and then his replies to
like Holly and some otherpeople because you know he said
they changed it to mostly a redcolor gallery and he just made
some mock-ups.
He's a graphic designer, so hemade some nice ones that he
thought could be kind of wherethey might be going.
Speaker 2 (57:41):
But some nice ones
that he thought could be kind of
where they might be going.
Speaker 1 (57:43):
But as long as
listening, I really like this.
Yeah, I particularly like thegallery icon because it actually
changes it to being more redthan pink.
Now, yeah, but it does havelike a gradient that goes red to
pink from right to left.
Speaker 2 (57:52):
Yeah, I do like that.
Speaker 1 (57:53):
So I do like the look
of this.
I mean, if they went somethinglike this, I'd be perfectly fine
with it.
It's definitely a hugeimprovement I mean the phone one
I could do with on all of themis okay, but I still don't like
the bright green and the onethat they had at sdc too much
apple?
yeah, because it's too close tothe apple version and it would
be nice to have you knowsomething that's a little more,
you know, close to samsung.
(58:14):
So if you were appalled by theicons at sC that I showed off,
then good news.
So maybe they're not going tostick with that.
The last thing is actually oneof the biggest stories.
One UI 7 offers next-levelcustomization for Galaxy phones,
and this is about the newHomeUp module for One UI 7.
(58:35):
And I made a full video on thiswhich I posted today.
It's doing quite well.
People are very interested inthis.
Basically, in One UI 7, theHomeUp module is getting an
update that allows you to tweakbasically everything to do with
animations and blur.
We've talked about how there's acertain subset of the Samsung
fan base that really cares aboutcontrolling every detail of the
(58:58):
animation when you're goinghome, and now they let you do
that in multiple different ways.
One of them is verymathematical, so let's talk
about them for a second.
The first one is simple tuning.
You can change it to one ofthree different options.
The first one is called pixelby pixel, which means basically
it's going to be a fasteranimation.
The next one is the scent of acertain fruit.
(59:19):
Feel the sweet taste of redfruit.
They are talking about Appleand iOS there.
That is an Apple reference.
This is a Samsung app andthey're saying if you want your
Samsung phone to have animations, like an iPhone.
That's what they're sayingwithout saying it.
Speaker 2 (59:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (59:36):
Choose that option,
so HomeUp will have an option
that will basically.
People have said for a longtime that they wanted iOS-like
animations on your Samsung.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
I don't, I don't
either, but if you do, you can
choose that and you can get thescent of a certain fruit.
Speaker 1 (59:49):
It's very funny.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
And then the last one
.
Speaker 1 (59:51):
There is simple
tuning.
You can either choose youranimations to be really fast, or
you can go to emotionally, which means slowly, I to be
really fast, or you can go toemotionally, which means slowly.
I don't know why they just callit slowly, but emotionally
means they like the word emotionSamsung.
I don't know why.
I guess that's a thing in Korea, like emotionally.
Anyway, that seems kind ofstrange to say to me.
But slow or fast for theanimations.
(01:00:14):
But you can also tune themusing advanced properties,
including my personal favorite, which is the cubic Bezier curve.
It's the cubic Bezier curve.
I'll find it here.
I've got to go to this guy'sprofile.
I have it in a video form butit's easier to show his
screenshots.
This guy posted a bunch of itright here, bunch of it's right
(01:00:41):
here.
So you can use this new toolcalled the interpolator, which
uses what is called the cubicbezier curve, which is used in
computer graphics and animationto determine the trajectory
along which something willtravel when you're doing a
particular animation.
So a cubic bezier curve.
Being a mathematician, of course, I looked this up because I
haven't really heard of it.
It's basically a parametriccurve, that that is
parameterized, uh, with a coupleof different points, and
(01:01:04):
usually a cubic curve has fourpoints, and so, basically,
you'll have two points that arefixed and there's two points
that you can change, which willchange the trajectory along
which the curve will travel.
And so in this case, the left, bottom and top right corners are
fixed, zero, zero, and one onein the plane, and the pink and
the green points control thebeginning of the animation and
(01:01:25):
the end of the animation.
So, essentially, when you gohome on your galaxy phone, the
icon like if I go to x and thenI go home the icon travels back
into the home screen and thisanimation will determine how
fast or slow the icon travels.
The pink point will control howfast it travels at the
beginning of the animation andthe green point will control how
(01:01:47):
fast it travels at the end ofthe animation.
Oh, okay, and they actuallygive you a description of it
down there below.
For me it's obviously reallycool because we're
mathematicians, but I think thismight be a little too technical
for people who are, likeaverage users, trying to use
home up obviously obviously theyprobably won't try to touch
this.
They'll probably just use scentof a certain fruit or the
simple tuning, yeah, this is anadvanced add-on, but I love it.
(01:02:10):
I think this is really cool.
People have been asking like wewant to control every detail of
the animations.
Well, now you can and you getthe technical the technical tool
and the mathematics behind howit's actually controlled, uh, at
the graphics level, at theanimation level.
So this is, I think, is awesome.
They also, in the HomeUp module, include new options for larger
folders.
He shows off the larger folder.
(01:02:31):
That's a new larger folder,right?
there, you can have a folderthat is a 4x2.
Pop-up folders where you canswipe the folder for pop-up.
That's something that's been in, like Nova and other launchers
for a while.
A folder that is a four by twopop-up folders where you can
swipe the folder for pop-up.
That's something that's been in, like Nova and other launchers
for a while.
They're going to bring that andfor all of you guys out there
who've been following me forthis one thing for the last year
they're bringing back thevertical app drawer.
It is in there as an activity.
(01:02:53):
It's called apps list, which iswhat it's always been called in
home up.
That will also Not somethingyou can run on your phone right
now if you have a One UI 6.1phone.
How did we run it?
Well, we used something calledAPKM, which allows you to unpack
an APK and run its activities.
(01:03:14):
That doesn't mean it actuallyworks on the phone, so if you
change any of these settings, itdoesn't do anything right now.
It just lets you see the menus.
So that's how this guy ran itand that's how I ran it in the
video that I made, but you can'tactually use any of them.
It doesn't actually changeanything.
So you won't be able to usethis until you get One UI 7,
which should be available inDecember.
(01:03:36):
When we get the beta, you'll beable to try out these HomeUp
functions and, of course, I'llmake a full video actually
showing how they work once I getsomething that can actually run
.
Here.
I was just showing the settings, but what do you think about
the options?
What do you think about theseoverall?
Speaker 2 (01:03:50):
customization choices
.
Honestly, I say having as muchcustomization as possible.
I think this is a very welcomeaddition back, and I can see a
lot of users kind of like whatyou said too, just picking the
first two easier options.
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
Most people are never
going to go into the advanced
tuning.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
I really don't think
so for, like most average users,
but I feel like there's a lotof people who do you know, are
sorry on the YouTube and dofollow us as Sammy Guru, who
would like to have that type ofcapability to control.
So I think this is going to hitall the fan service.
Speaker 1 (01:04:31):
Yeah, judging by my
YouTube feedback from the video
I posted on today, I think a lotof people who follow us and
read semi guru and watch theYouTube channel, the podcast,
they they really want me to do adetailed thing about the cubic
Bezier curve.
I talked about it briefly inthe video but they to show like
how it will change theproperties when the update does
arrive, and so I probably willdo a deep dive and talk a little
more about the mathematics.
(01:04:51):
I did some research on it.
I read again.
I mean, obviously I know whatparametric curve is, but this is
a specific one relevant tocomputer graphics and that's not
really my field.
So I'd never really seen itbefore.
But I definitely can give someinsight into what it's doing and
how it's doing it now that I'veread more about it.
So I will probably make anarticle on Sammy Guru explaining
it.
I didn't want to put it intoday's video because it's going
(01:05:14):
to be really technical and noteverybody will want it.
So I'll put it in a post andyou can read it, if you're
interested, when the updatecomes out.
So all right.
So I think we're now to achance to talk about some
hardware, and I've got threedifferent pieces of hardware
that I want to talk about, soI'll say some brief things about
each one.
I don't have a ton to say aboutit.
I mean I guess I have somestuff to say about this, but
(01:05:36):
it's not really the mostexciting product in the world.
This is the Galaxy S24 FE.
It's the blue one.
This is Samsung's budget S24model.
I've been running this nowsince I got back from SDC.
It's a very good phone.
I think it's just a veryconfusing phone.
(01:05:56):
I talked about this on thepodcast before.
It's just released at a weirdtime because it's like the
middle of October.
The S25 is coming out in liketwo and a half three months and
this phone is not that muchcheaper than a regular base
model S25.
This was $649, I think I paidfor it.
If it were me, I would justwait to get the S25 or the S25
(01:06:20):
Plus.
It's going to be a little moremoney, but I mean you're going
to get a better camera.
The bezels on this are a lotbigger.
You can see like the blackaround the screen.
The bezels are just they'rebigger.
You're going to get a bettercamera.
The bezels on this are a lotbigger.
You can see like the blackaround the screen.
The bezels are just they'rebigger than you're going to get
on the flagship lineup.
The camera's not quite as good.
You're not going to get, youknow, the same sensors that you
would get on the flagship modelcoming up in January.
(01:06:42):
The battery life is phenomenal.
So if you really only careabout battery life, I guess I
mean because this one doesn'thave as high resolution display.
It's also running a chip that'snot quite as powerful or as
hungry.
I've been running this, youknow, and it lasts a good two
days.
If you use it as your primarywithout charging it, it'll be
down to like 20, 15%.
(01:07:03):
I ran it in Vegas for a whileand used it.
I just think it's a confusingphone because it looks good.
I mean, honestly, the blue doeslook good.
There's nothing wrong with likethe look of this phone, but
you're going to get a lot ofupgrades if you opt to go with
the S25.
I don't know why, though, thatthey don't have a smaller
version of the FE, because thisis actually not the same size as
the S24.
It's the same size as the S24Plus.
(01:07:25):
Another thing that confused me,too, is when I started using
this phone.
I noticed the fingerprintsensors at the very bottom.
It's actually a lot lower thanit is on the Galaxy S24 Ultra or
the S24 Plus.
This one's actually higher, closer to the middle, and the
reason for that is I hadforgotten people on Twitter.
They straightened me out becauseif you post something on
(01:07:46):
Twitter and you're supposed tobe Sammy Grew people on Twitter
they straighten me out becauseyou know, if you post something
on Twitter and you're supposedto be Sammy Gru, people are like
why don't you know that?
Well, I'd forgotten.
The ones that use theultrasonic sensor are in the
closer to the middle.
This uses the regular opticalfingerprint sensor.
It's not the same tech.
But I will be honest, eventhough it's lower and I don't
like that, it's not that muchworse than the ultrasonic.
It is less accurate, for sure, because of course, the
(01:08:09):
ultrasonic is just a bettertechnology and that's also how
they cut the cost on a cheaperphone.
Yeah, but if you get used to itbeing lower, it's pretty
accurate.
I was pretty impressed with it.
Um, given that it's inferioroverall tech, if you're not an
enthusiast, nothing wrong withit.
It's just like if it were meand if I was devising most of
our demographic, I wouldn't buythis in october because the s25
(01:08:29):
lineup will come out for alittle bit more money,
especially if you have a coupleyear old phone which, if you're
an enthusiast, your phoneprobably isn't more than two or
three years old.
Samsung's going to give you aton of trade-in value in january
, even for tori on the s22 ultra.
They're going to give you a lotof money to trade that in.
So why buy this when you couldprobably trade in your S22 Ultra
(01:08:51):
and get an S25 Plus S25 Ultrafor probably the same price or
close to it?
Speaker 2 (01:08:58):
No, I actually have a
question on that go to like
AT&T to, you know, get a newphone or no.
I'm just in there, uh, or uh,just when I just like I'm out
and about and I'm seeing peoplepurchasing Samsung phones uh,
for the FEs I mostly see, uh,either you know teenage or
(01:09:21):
parents buying them for theirteenagers.
Uh, you know, maybe they're umfor college students and um, uh,
mostly like a like an elderlydemographic you know buys this
one.
Um, I'm envisioning probablymore so, like people getting it
around like christmas time andstuff like that.
Uh, maybe I'm just trying tofind a justification, maybe why
(01:09:44):
they may release it in octoberif that's their demographic
they're heading for.
But would you do you think thatthis is another great solid
phone for those who are liketeens going off to college?
Maybe it's like you know, aphone.
Speaker 1 (01:09:59):
Yeah, I mean I'm sure
, obviously, obviously the phone
sells or they wouldn't keepmaking it.
Speaker 2 (01:10:04):
So I mean I'm not
going to say it doesn't sell
because it probably does.
Speaker 1 (01:10:13):
It's just a weird
time for the enthusiast crowd
because it's not really the timeyou want to buy a phone when
the S25 series will come out.
If you're in the group thatcares about having the latest
phone, you're not going to wantto buy this.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Older people Do most
enthusiasts, you think, would
want this, or would they justalways want the higher grade?
I think?
Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
they probably mostly
want the higher grade for sure.
But I mean, this is a goodphone.
If you're an average user, youcare about battery life.
The only thing I would say isfor the college girls.
They might not want this, because the camera is not as
good they want that flip.
Yeah, they might want the flipor wait for the S25 as well,
because the selfie camera onthis is good.
Speaker 2 (01:10:43):
But it's not as good.
Speaker 1 (01:10:44):
So if you're like
taking a lot of Instagrammable
shots or a lot of selfieswhatever you know those, those
kind of college girls theyprobably wouldn't necessarily
want this.
But for older people like yourgrandparents or something, this
is a perfect phone.
Like, I mean, my mother-in-lawshe's not that old but I gave
her the S23 FE last year causeher phone broke and I gave her
the S23.
She's had no problems with it.
She's never said, oh, like thedisplay is not high resolution
(01:11:06):
enough or the camera doesn'treally work that much Because
she doesn't take a lot ofselfies outside of taking some
with our kids or something, andthe rear camera is still good
enough.
I mean, it's not going to begreat for, like, macro shots or
low light, but if you're justtaking photos of like your
grandkids or something, they'regoing to like that, so I imagine
you're right.
They probably sell this to aspecific demographic that has
nothing to do with enthusiasts,so they don't really care.
(01:11:27):
They're not worried about this, isn't going to cannibalize the
S25 sales they obviously knowthat it's not a bad phone.
It's a good phone for a certaintype of person, but it's just
not a phone, probably for mostof our listeners, I would
imagine who listen regularly, because it just doesn't make
sense to buy one when the nextversion is coming out.
And also there's not a big pricedifference is the thing.
(01:11:49):
So that's the main reason.
I would say, even if you aremaybe in the more casual
demographic and you happen uponthis podcast I don't know how
many casual users happen uponthe same group of podcasts but
if you do, you might think aboutwaiting for the S25 anyway,
because this one is not priced alot cheaper.
If this one was like $500, thatwould be one thing, but it's
$650.
(01:12:10):
And the regular S25 will be $799probably so after your trade-in
unless you need a phone rightnow, like if your phone is
broken, then that's one thing, but if your phone is not broken,
there's nothing wrong with it.
You could wait.
The other two pieces ofhardware I have is one.
I'm could wait.
Um, the other two pieces ofhardware I have is one.
I'm not going to hold this upthe whole time because it's just
(01:12:31):
too damn heavy.
But let's have us an ultra, which we already kind of showed
off here.
Um, this thing is absolutebeast.
I mean, I don't really have alot to say about this other than
you know it's really reallynice and the screen is less
reflective.
You guys can probably see theyput the anti-glare on it, not
the same as the S24 Ultra, butthere's an anti-glare on here
(01:12:52):
that reduces the reflections.
But the thing is it's notreally that much different than
the Tab S9 Ultra.
There's a new processor in here.
They went with MediaTek insteadof Snapdragon and that was the
main change that they made.
From what I can tell, there arereally no performance changes.
I've ran games on it.
I've multitasked, like I didwith the Tab S9 Ultra.
(01:13:14):
I use that every day too.
I've always used my tablet.
As I said before, I just don'ttake it anywhere.
It's too heavy.
I carry my iPad 11 inches mymain, especially now the Samsung
guy.
I was thinking about gettingthe smaller Tab S10, and so I
could be all Samsung, but thenthey deleted it from the lineup
so I'm still carrying the11-inch M4 iPad Pro.
(01:13:35):
It's just way lighter andsmaller and for most tablet-y
things I want to do it's better.
This is great, just sitting atmy desk, answer socials, take
notes, whatever.
Watch some media.
If I want to watch some YouTubeclips, it's good for
researching videos I want to do,but it's not great for
portability.
It's too big.
But I have noticed no issueswith the media attack processor,
(01:13:58):
no problems there.
The build and everything prettymuch hasn't really changed at
all.
So there's really not a lot tosay.
The biggest thing I would sayis, if you really find your tab
s9 ultra is just like tooreflective, this one is a big
change there.
It's a lot less reflective ifyou use it in bright areas, but,
um, otherwise there's like noreason to upgrade from a tab s9
(01:14:19):
ultra unless you're like me andyou're like you can make money
off the upgrade like why wouldyou?
it's like, why would you do it?
I, if you have an older tablet, sure, but there really is not
much of any difference.
The performance is very similar.
On the day-to-day usageBenchmarks who cares?
Benchmarks don't really matterabout day-to-day use.
When I'm talking about tellingsomeone if they should buy it or
not, we post benchmarks on thesite.
(01:14:40):
But if I'm telling you if youshould upgrade the benchmarks,
benchmarks really don't matterbecause it's about how it
performs in the day-to-day.
It's about the same.
It's not any crazy better oranything, just the
anti-reflective screen.
I'd say that's the main keything.
That I would say is a reason toconsider upgrading.
But it's not enough that Iwould spend Because, like I said
(01:15:00):
, if you trade in a Tavis 9Ultra and you want to get the
base model, I guess in that caseit's only $299, but I wouldn't
even spend $299 just for thedisplay.
If you use it indoors, whocares really about the
anti-reflective display?
Speaker 2 (01:15:16):
I probably already
know the answer to this, but
could you run Microsoft Officeor anything?
Speaker 1 (01:15:22):
Yeah, you can.
Speaker 2 (01:15:24):
My follow-up question
would be with Surface Pro being
out for a while and I knowthat's a pretty pricey price tag
, you know, over the Surface Pro, but maybe for the 1100 model
would you, or which one youthink would be more bang for
your buck, getting the SurfacePro, the latest one or that?
Speaker 1 (01:15:47):
I mean, it really
depends on, I guess, what you
want to do, right?
I mean, the service pro isalways going to be better for
content creation.
If you want, for contentconsumption, though, this is
better because it's got a betterdisplay I mean, the ammo
display is beautiful, it'santi-reflective it's just an
overall better panel forwatching like videos and stuff
netflix, youtube, whatever, um,but obviously if you need to do
like creation, you can't runlike adobe premiere pro on here,
like if you need to watchingvideos and stuff Netflix,
(01:16:07):
youtube, whatever but obviouslyif you need to do creation, you
can't run Adobe Premiere Pro onhere.
If you need to edit videos andstuff, you're going to need a
full laptop.
The better competitor for thatwould be and that's a good segue
the Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360,which I also got at the same
time that I picked up the GalaxyS24 FE and the Tav S10 Ultra.
(01:16:28):
This is the Book 5 Pro 360.
Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
And yes.
Speaker 1 (01:16:32):
I still have the
Galaxy Book Edge.
This is the thinnest 360 BookPro that Samsung ever released.
It is not as thin as the GalaxyBook Edge and it's not quite as
light, but it's only like halfa pound heavier.
But this one does have theIntel Core 7 Ultra in it, so
actual Intel and not Snapdragonchips.
(01:16:53):
So that means this can actuallyrun everything that you want,
like Google Drive desktop.
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:16:58):
Oh, you know, that's
what we like, right away it
actually has some power forvideo editing.
Speaker 1 (01:17:03):
Now I still like the
Snapdragon Elite Galaxy Book
Edge and I'll tell you this onebattery life's not as good.
Of course, that's the mainreason I haven't used Windows
laptops as my primary and why Iuse my MacBook.
The battery life has never beenas good on Windows laptops.
That laptop over there the Edgegets close to my MacBook.
This one still it's good.
(01:17:23):
It's better than you know olderWindows laptops that I've owned
and that I have, but it's still.
The battery life is not quitewhere the MacBook is, but the
performance on this is better.
The screen is better.
There's some slight differencesin the screen.
Obviously, the chiparchitecture.
This one is much more forcreating.
You can use this for creatingon the go.
(01:17:44):
Plus, this one has the S Pen.
It comes in the box with it andthis one actually has
touchscreen and you can write onit with the S Pen, just like
you can your tablet or yourphone.
Speaker 2 (01:17:52):
But you need to carry
the S Pen separately.
Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
Yeah, yeah, you can
stick it to the side, but mostly
people carry it separately andyou can fold this back.
That's why it's called a 360.
It actually folds back entirelywith the hinge.
You can use it in tent mode ifyou want to watch videos.
It's a very, very versatilelaptop.
Very nice piece of hardware.
I mean, I think Samsung'slaptops are highly underrated.
Speaker 2 (01:18:15):
I talked about it a
lot.
I don't know very many peoplewho do buy Samsung laptops.
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:18:21):
I mean, honestly, if
I didn't love my MacBook, the
MacBook Pro is just.
I mean, I know people don'tlike Apple because it's the
Samsung podcast, but you've gotto give Apple props to the
MacBook and the Silicon, theirlaptop.
I can get like 16 hours off ofa charger and that's editing 4K
video and doing all of my stuffthat's insane.
(01:18:42):
I can't even get.
Maybe on the Edge I can getnine.
That's still almost half andthat one doesn't't have.
Maybe that laptop has maybe 10of the power of my macbook pro.
So you know I'm getting twiceas much battery life with 10
times the power.
I mean it's hard to switch fromthe macbook pro.
As a creator because I editvideo.
I do so many things.
(01:19:03):
If I didn't have to edit videoand have the crazy battery life
on the go, I could use this inmy daily laptop.
Windows has actually gotten tothe point where I could use it
as my daily driver.
It's just the MacBook Prohardware and the battery life
combination is so good.
Maybe eventually Windows willget there.
I'm not opposed and actuallyfor my day-to-day integration
(01:19:23):
it'd be better because I useSamsung as my main phone, my
tablet, right now at work.
But I have to switch the iPhoneto do some stuff with the Mac,
like if I want to get photosover.
Then I wouldn't have to worryabout the integration because I
have phone link on here.
It pairs my Samsung phone to myWindows and I can text message
from there.
I can actually browse my phoneand use phone apps, android apps
(01:19:45):
on here.
Great laptop, I would say.
If you are in the Samsungecosystem and you're not like a
crazy power video editing stufflike I do, buy this.
It's great.
It's like $1,600.
Speaker 2 (01:19:56):
Yeah, that's going to
be my follow-up.
Speaker 1 (01:19:57):
I mean, this is
almost the tablet is almost as
expensive.
Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
Yeah, and this has
got way more that's why it's
crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
It's like this is
cool, but this is like a toy.
That's why it's crazy.
It's like this is cool, butthis is like a toy, whereas this
is actual tool that you coulddo all of your stuff with, and
you have the S Pen here too.
Like you don't lose the S Pen,you still get it.
Speaker 2 (01:20:13):
Yeah, I like that, I
like that, so like this is like
great.
Speaker 1 (01:20:21):
I mean, obviously, if
you have both.
One other thing you can do ifyou have both is you can use
this couch.
So I have two displays.
I have the tablet.
Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
But I mean, not
everyone has the luxury of
having a $1,600 tablet to gowith their $1,600 laptop.
Speaker 1 (01:20:32):
I'm just saying, if
you do, there's a great
integration between the Samsungproducts and they do work.
But it's like if you have tochoose one, obviously you should
get the laptop, not the tablet, because they're almost the same
price.
Speaker 2 (01:20:52):
No, just to follow up
, just kind of thinking about
that and I haven't exploredanything in the Samsung realm of
laptops, but kind of thinkingfor, just like our average
consumers as well in the Samsungecosystem, if someone was
wanting to maybe at some pointget a Samsung laptop, what would
be, you think, aconsumer-friendly option to go
with?
Speaker 1 (01:21:08):
I mean I honestly I
think, once they fix some of the
compatibility issues with theapps, for most average users,
that laptop over there the oneI've been using in the podcast
for the last five months, thesnapdragon x elite version or
the galaxy book edge is amazingbecause it's a way cheaper than
this one now.
I think it's like 1100 or100 or$1,000.
And that's like right aroundthe.
(01:21:30):
So then you actually get intothe comparison of well it's and
I know people are going tomention this you can't compare
the Galaxy Book Edge to theMacBook Pro, which I know I did
earlier, because their one is$4,500, my MacBook and the
Galaxy Book Edge is $1,000.
If you compare it to theMacBook Air, the Galaxy Book's
Edge is actually pretty one forone Again, except the MacBook
(01:21:51):
Air has a pretty big batterylife advantage because of Apple
Silicon, but performance-wisepretty close.
So I would say, like if you'rea college student or you're just
a casual user who's not doingmuch video editing, you're
mainly doing web browsing, youknow excel, that stuff.
The galaxy book edge is a wayto go.
They've had sales that broughtit down to like eight or nine
hundred some places I saw bestbuy.
(01:22:12):
Um, this one would be more likeif you are doing light video
editing like photoshop, uh, ifyou have like a little more
serious, like this is you'regoing to be your work laptop and
your personal like.
If you have a job thatdefinitely needs some kinds of
software and you have to do somecreation and stuff, you want to
buy this one for sure.
But if you're just doing it foryour personal stuff, like
photos, maybe you just use likeAdobe Lightroom or something in
(01:22:33):
the browser and you're mainlydoing browser based and like
spreadsheets, word processing, like college stuff, buy that one
and they have educationdiscounts at Samsung.
But make sure you go to ouraffiliate link on sammygurucom
on the page.
You go to our affiliate link onsammygurucom on the page.
That's about the book edge.
We have a link that in thedescription.
If you do want to buy one, youcould make us some money and
then we'll be able to keep doingthis podcast, because we take a
(01:22:55):
lot of time to prepare thispodcast and, to be honest with
you, the podcast doesn't makethat much money yet this is one
thing the podcast still loses alittle money, but I'm dedicated
to it, I believe, in the longrun.
So we're going to keep doing itand I just enjoy talking to Tori
for an hour and a half everyweek, but you know we could
always use that extra money tomake the podcast profitable.
(01:23:15):
Let's finish off with somequestions.
I saw one earlier which I'llanswer.
I don't know if I even saw anyothers.
Oh, and I'll talk about this.
Someone said how's the healthtracking between the Samsung
ring and watch?
Which one's more accurate?
I think I addressed thisbriefly on a past episode.
I think if you have them intandem, that improves the
accuracy, but I think the watchis probably better for most
(01:23:38):
things, whereas the ring isbetter for sleep.
Speaker 2 (01:23:41):
So like the ring is
better for sleep, obviously.
Speaker 1 (01:23:45):
That's what it's
optimized for, um, and I think
also um.
Actually I was gonna have mywife agree that she would do the
.
I've wanted to do this but Iobviously can't write this
article.
There's no, I don't know anyonewho's done it is estimate the
cycle tracking capability of thewatch in the ring for women,
because obviously women make upmore than 50 of the world
they're actually the majority.
That's an important feature andI can't really cover that
(01:24:06):
because obviously I don't havethe ability to cover it, but
nicole told me she would try tohelp me with that, so try to
write that up.
I don't know how many ladieslisten to the show, but I think
that'll get a lot of interest ongoogle search because I bet a
lot of women look for that.
I haven't seen the otherarticles dedicate the attention
to it, so probably because a lotof websites don't have a female
writer who could or would bewilling to delve into the
(01:24:27):
feature.
But I found that the watch isprobably better for a lot of
things.
But if you do have them both, that definitely increases the
accuracy of the step counting, which is definitely the
shortcoming of the watches Toriand I talked about in the
beginning.
They need to improve that, either the software or the
sensors on the hardware for nextyear.
But I mean overall, I find tobe pretty good.
(01:24:48):
The other thing that I wantedto address is this I made this
post about the oleophobiccoating on the Samsung Galaxy
phones.
This is something that hasbothered me for a long time, is
one of the issues that I sayexists with Samsung phones.
You may have seen this tutorialbecause you have a phone that's
a couple years old.
(01:25:09):
Samsung's only phobic coding isnot that good.
If you own a phone for at leastnine months, it's going to look
like a smudgy mess anytime youuse the phone for more than like
two minutes and it doesn'tmatter if you wipe it down all
the time.
It doesn't matter if you washyour hands all the time.
It's not because my hands aredirty.
(01:25:29):
I posted this picture on x andI got some people I had to, you
know, block because they weresaying dumb things and like oh,
that's hand lotion.
Ha ha, it's not, it's.
I use the phone for two minutes.
It always looks like that.
I could wash my hands literally10 times before you always have
oil on your hand, doesn'tmatter how many times you wash
them, and the oleophobic coatingis supposed to make sure those
don't show up.
Samsung, whatever they do tolaminate their displays and the
(01:25:51):
oleophobic coating on theirglass is not as good as other
OEMs.
I hate to say it, but Apple, xiaomi, google I use all these
other brands never seen thishappen, even after a few years
of use, whereas the Samsungphones after nine months I've
owned this phone since Januaryit looks like this.
Now a lot of people are saying,oh well, it must be your phone
(01:26:12):
or whatever.
It's not.
There's a bunch of people.
If you read through the hair, this one got a lot of
impressions.
It's got 84 likes, eightbookmarks, a bunch of retweets
and a bunch of people replyingsaying, yeah, the same thing
happened to me.
Have you seen this story on your, yeah yeah, yeah, I was trying
to call Samsung to be better, and people are trying to just
pretend that there's not anissue.
(01:26:32):
There's definitely an issue here.
No, there is.
Now, don't feel bad for me.
As I said, I'm in a goodposition.
I have three S24 Ultras, so Ijust put my SIM in a different
one.
The one I took a picture of onTwitter is my titanium one.
I used that one since January.
This orange one I bought toactually run the 7.0 beta, but
now it's not even coming untilDecember, so I just took my main
(01:26:53):
SIM and popped it over here.
Now I've got no oleophobicissues because this one is
basically brand new and this onewill be good until I get my S25
.
So don't cry for me.
You don't need to cry for meRiver.
Speaker 2 (01:27:04):
I'm good trying to
advocate.
Speaker 1 (01:27:05):
People are commenting
like I've got a solution.
You could apply oleophobicsolution from Amazon.
I know all that stuff.
I'm not going to do thatbecause I have a fresh phone
right here.
I don't need to.
But I was trying to advocate forthe average consumer who
doesn't have three $1,300 S24Ultras they could rotate between
, because it's annoying.
This is the main one I used forthe last nine months and now I
(01:27:27):
can't really use it.
It's actually very annoying touse it.
So that's why I switched to theorange one.
I didn't want to, because it'sa pain to switch between the two
phones as my main one, becauseI've got to move my messages and
everything over.
It's not as easy as you'd thinkbecause even though my accounts
are logged in the call historyand all that stuff, I've got to
(01:27:48):
migrate between there, whichisn't necessarily always
attached to the SIM.
So, to answer some of thequestions that were on this
thread no, it is not grease, itis not lotion.
My hands were not dirty.
I do use some cleaner.
It's called Woosh Cleaner, butit's non-alcohol,
non-ammonia-based cleaner.
Some people were saying maybeyou used a harsh chemical
cleaner, Did not?
Woosh is completely safe.
I use it on all my other phones.
(01:28:08):
I love Samsung, Obviously.
I just want them to be better.
So I mean I wouldn't go aroundslandering Samsung, saying this
is a problem with Samsung andnot other OEMs, because of
course I want Samsung to be thebest, but the fact is I've never
seen this happen on any otherphone that I own.
Speaker 2 (01:28:23):
Yeah, like I think
and we talked about this maybe
two or three podcasts before, but I mean for an average
consumer, when you're buyingthis, this is an investment, at
least for five years, you know, like most keep them around like
at the tail end of five, butmaybe three, you know, because
(01:28:45):
now all these services, yeah, Ithink three to five years is
probably pretty.
Speaker 1 (01:28:48):
You know people also
comment sometimes and say, well,
five years, there's no onekeeps their phone five years.
You'd be surprised actually youwould be surprised how many
people have their phone for fivenot only five, but seven years.
Speaker 2 (01:28:59):
Yes, I see a lot of
people still using galaxy s8s.
Speaker 1 (01:29:02):
So all of you guys
who are enthusiasts, some of you
are not quite in touch withreality I sometimes I'm not
either.
Where you're like, oh, tori hasan S20 Ultra.
That's a super old phone, no itisn't.
It's not that old there arepeople still rocking Galaxy S8s
on the regular?
I promise you so.
It's not that old to say fiveto seven years.
Some people do keep their phonethat long.
(01:29:23):
If you were using this at thetail end of five years, what is
it going to look like?
This is after nine months.
Yeah, I'm trying to advocate forthe people who are spending
their money on this.
Who?
don't have money, exactly whodon't have the luxury of having
a bunch of devices because theydo it for a living, like I do.
It's great for me, don't?
I mean, I wasn't putting thisout there to get sympathy for me
.
I just pop it into a new phoneand I'm good to go.
(01:29:45):
It's a little inconvenient, butI don't have to go out and
spend a whole bunch more moneybecause I already have these
ones for testing.
Anyway, I want to talk aboutthat because this one kind of
blew up and a lot of peoplechiming in about how I had
lotion and stuff in my handswhich I don't.
No, lotion, nothing, that'sjust oil.
The oleophobic coating ispretty much worn off over time.
Anyway, the oleophobic coatingis pretty much worn off over
(01:30:06):
time.
Anyway, I think that's prettymuch it.
Anything else, tori, that youwant to add for this week?
No, I'm going to go out thereand I might freeze to death.
Speaker 2 (01:30:13):
It's probably like 69
degrees here, because it's
already 6 pm.
I don't even have a jacket andyou've got shorts and flip-flops
on and the flippies.
Speaker 1 (01:30:22):
Yeah, I'm probably
going to have to mosey over to
urgent care get that taken careof Along the way, and before I
do that, though, I'll remind youguys this week keep expanding
your galaxy.
