Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back
everybody.
This is episode number 12 ofthe Sammy Guru podcast.
My name is Jeff Springer andwith me, as always, is my
co-host, torrey.
Torrey say hi, how's it going?
We're back another week.
It's been a long week, I think,for Torrey.
Torrey was just telling me hissituation.
It's been a busy weekSamsung-wise as well.
One UI 6.1.1 dropped, so I'vebeen busy covering a lot of
(00:20):
stuff.
We're probably going to have alittle bit shorter episode today
.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Tori and I are seeing
a stand-up comedy show tonight,
but we didn't want to leave youguys out in the cold with no
Sammy Guru podcast.
That would be pretty rude.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
We don't want to be
rude, so we're going to go ahead
and do the show.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
It'll probably be
around an hour, but getting into
it, tori, so you can telleverybody else who told me
before the show so what's beengoing on with you this week oh
yeah, uh, you know, just withthe uh height of everything, uh,
you know we had a um few uh,you know, like fake bomb threats
or stuff you know, circulatingwith schools and stuff.
But you know, uh, uh, I'm justvery fortunate that the school
(00:57):
I'm at, um, they really uh, youknow, um tried to do their best
to like look into everything andtake, uh, threats and things
very seriously.
And, uh, you know, we try to dotheir best to like look into
everything and take threats andthings very seriously.
And, you know, we're justtrying to encourage parents to
just really just make sure that, like, they talk to their kids
about, you know, making falsethreats and things like that,
just because you know it is avery serious thing, especially
(01:21):
in the world that we live intoday.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yeah, you can never
be too careful with that.
I mean so much stuff that doeshappen around the country,
obviously so glad that nothingreally happened there.
But I mean, fortunately that ispart of working at high school
and even sometimes working atthe university.
There's been stuff over theyears when I worked at the
university where there wereincidents either around campus
or on campus and stuff like that.
(01:44):
So I'm glad that that workedout.
Anything else, I mean we'reheading out to see Dusty Slay
tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
I know I am really
excited.
It has been a while since I'vebeen to a comedy show and I am
greatly looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
I'm a big fan of his
Netflix stand-up, so I asked for
everyone to come.
We're both Alabama fans, as wetalked about.
I got my shirt on.
Dusty Slay is actually fromAlabama and one of his stand-up
bits he talks about how his dadis a huge Alabama Crimson Tide
football fan, so I thoughtwearing the Alabama shirt to the
show might be a good idea.
Luckily, the show is like justright around the corner here
(02:18):
from the office here in downtownPhoenix, so it's not like we
have a long way to go, but it'salso the end of our workday so
we've got to get some food.
So, that being said, let's jumpinto the news, not waste too
much time, and let you guys getright to the meat of the show
today.
So, first of all, big news thisweek, as I said, one UI 6.1.1,
which is one of the two updatesthat we were really waiting on
(02:41):
getting, is now rolling out toSamsung Galaxy S24 series.
It's only in Korea right now,but of course it will be coming
to the US and we, of course, covered the full thing.
Sumit has a full write-up ofthis on the website, highly
recommend.
As usual, he puts togetherthese huge guides of everything
(03:02):
you need to know.
He has all the features listed.
I've made a bunch of videos onour YouTube channel.
Sumit and I have both beenworking like crazy around the
clock since Wednesday to coverthis, but his article is
exhaustive.
I have some videos showing themoff, kind of in video form.
Tori, some somewhat good newsfor you the S22 Ultra will
(03:24):
receive some of the features, but not all the features from
the update, so there's a littlecontroversy about this.
Yeah, sorry, not all the GalaxyEye features, which we'll talk
about in a second.
Some of the ones that arecoming from the Z Fold 6, which
I have right here all of thosefeatures that came out when it
was released.
Some of those are coming to theS22 Ultra, but it's not clear
(03:46):
exactly which one.
So they're getting a lot of thecamera features like Portrait
Studio and some of those otherfeatures, but Samsung left the
S22 Ultra and the S22 series asa whole off of their press
release for devices that areofficially getting the update.
So we don't know when and wealso don't really know
specifically which ones.
We're assuming because someother people have said on the
(04:07):
samsung community forums.
A moderator said that the s22ultra would get sketched image
as well, which is one of thecoolest features I think we've
talked about in the past.
You draw something and aiconverts it but we don't know if
it's going to get all the otherones and really bad news for
s21 users.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
I was actually about
to ask about that.
Someone asked in the communityforums hey, what about our S21
peeps?
Yeah, we got some action too.
Yeah, yeah, the S21 is notgetting apparently hardly any of
the features I don't think it'sgetting even the camera
features, oh no.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
So the S21 Ultra is
getting left out in the cold for
these specific Galaxy Eyefeatures.
But keep in mind, though, theS21, just because it doesn't get
these features from 6.1.1, wedon't know if some of these
might be introduced in 7.0,because Samsung has these two
timelines and of course this issome speculation, but a couple
of other people have speculatedon this as well Sam Mobile and
(04:56):
some other Samsung outlets.
Just because it's not gettingthe 6.1.1 doesn't mean it might
not get some of those featuresin 7.0.
It would just be a lot later, maybe in like December, when
that stable update comes.
They had two updates.
They were doing back-to-back,so they can only support so many
models with 6.1.1.
So if you look at the full listwe have kind of a full list on
(05:17):
the website, like I said, thatSumit put out You've got S22,
22+, 22 Ultra, getting some ofthe features, not all of them.
The S23, S24 series, z Fold 5,and Z Flip 5 will get pretty
much all of the features.
Those are the ones that areconfirmed to get all of them, as
well as the Tab, s9 series, s9,s9 Plus, s9 Ultra, because
(05:38):
that's the flagship tablet.
The rest of them are notguaranteed to get all of them,
but they will get some portionof the update kind of picking
and choosing.
And if you look at the listthat he talked about, there are
various kind of pieces that wediscuss, like which features
will come to which phones.
It's kind of hard to go througheach individual one, but to
(05:59):
kind of give you the timelineand some of the more exciting
features right now it's rollingout in Korea on September 9th,
which is Monday.
We're recording this on Friday, the 6th by the time you guys
listen to this podcast, whichwill be Monday, you will have,
hopefully, if you have an S24device in the US, it should roll
out to the US and Europe onMonday.
That's what Samsung said.
(06:20):
And if you have a S23 deviceFold 5 or Flip 5 or Tab S9
series September 12th, so that'snext Thursday.
So all of you guys who havenewer Samsung devices from the
last two years should get it inthe US and Europe at least by
the end of next week.
(06:40):
Now that doesn't mean it's goingto roll out globally to every
region by the end of next week.
Samsung typically is relativelyfast compared to historically
where they it's going to rollout globally to every region by
the end of next week.
Samsung typically is relativelyfast compared to historically,
where they would take months toroll out an update, but it'll
probably still be a couple weeksIf you're not in Korea, us,
europe those are the three bigregions that usually get it
first.
You might be waiting up until,I would say, maybe the 19th of
(07:01):
September.
They'll finish probably rollingit out.
So just to remind you guys ofsome of the big features that
are coming, I made severalvideos, sketched image, which we
talked about.
I think that's a fun feature.
I've actually used it more thanI thought.
I mean, the main reason I'veused it more than I thought is
because Jonathan likes to playwith it.
He likes to draw like we'resitting at a restaurant and he's
bored and doesn't want to sit,you know, because he's a
(07:23):
four-year-old, I pull out thes-pin like, hey, you want to
draw some dinosaurs and have aiconvert them and see what it
thinks they look like?
He likes to say, let's see whatthe phone thinks this picture
looks like, because that's whathe thinks it's doing.
It's like interpreting which Iguess it is like the ai is
interpreting what it thinks yourdrawing is.
Sometimes I'm a terrible artist, so I draw a dinosaur and it
thinks it's like a giraffe orsomething.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
He thinks that's
hilarious.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
So I mean it's a
great feature.
If you have kids, they probablywill like sketched image.
The other ones that I think arereally useful is that you will
get new circle-to-searchfeatures.
We talked about some of theseGoogle features that are rolling
out with circle-to-search.
Samsung specificallyhighlighted them in the One UI
(08:06):
6.1.1 changelog as coming inthis update.
Two of them are one that me andyou would be very interested in
, especially you, since you'restill teaching math.
Well, maybe you're notinterested, but your students
would be advanced math problemsolving capabilities.
Now, when you use circle tosearch, when there's a math
problem on the screen, you canwatch my latest video because I
did it live in the video.
If, yeah, I put it, I did adouble polar integral like calc
(08:28):
three integral.
If you do circle to search onthe screen, not only will it
show you like suggested videosand places online, it'll
actually let you submit thesolution using a one button to
all of the homework solvesystems, whoa.
So now you have a one clicksubmit to like mathway, wolf,
chegg, like.
It'll submit it to all of themfor you and you don't have to do
any work.
So it makes it 10 times easierto cheat now using Circle to
(08:51):
Search.
It's called Advanced MathProblem Solving.
That's what Google calls it.
What we really call it is thedumbification of our youth,
because now no one will know howto do a polar integral.
I mean, a lot of people don'tknow now, but no one will know
because they won't do it,they'll just have it do it.
It was really easy to get thesolution to a pretty hard
integral and, yeah, you can useall the tools in one place, like
(09:12):
you don't have to leave Googlesearch now you just just press
down circle to search and likeboom, there's your, your
solution right there.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
I'll show it to you
later too.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Maybe I'll insert a
clip from the video here into
the podcast.
And then the other one whichwe've been waiting for so long
is the circle to search musicwhich we talked about many times
, which is cool, Like if he hasa song playing nearby or on your
own device and you hold downthe circle to search button at
the bottom, then it pops up alittle music note at the bottom
which will let you getinformation about the song.
(09:42):
Now the thing about this is Ihave the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which
I actually just got in heretoday.
We're going to talk about it inthe hardware segment here, that
is.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
It doesn't even have.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Circle to Search
music.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
yet, and this is
Google's phone- so I don't know
what's going on with the Circleto Search music, like the
rollout.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
So I said in my video
like yes, we're going to get
these features, they're going tobe inside of the update for
6.1.1.
But I don't even know if that'snecessarily true.
It may not be true, becauseSamsung seems to be rolling them
out, but Google is pushing someof them from the server side
too, and so I don't actuallyknow.
Hopefully they come, but it'slisted in the changelog Weather
(10:24):
effects on wallpapers.
So your wallpaper?
Oh, go ahead, tori.
What?
Speaker 2 (10:27):
were you going to say
?
Speaker 1 (10:29):
No finish that, and
then I actually have a question,
so another feature was thewallpecker automatically
adjusting to the time and dayand weather conditions.
I actually got an update lastnight on the S24 Ultra.
Here I've got three phones onthe table, this one.
I got the update.
It's like a one gigabyte updatewhere it shows like if it's I
mean, obviously it's never goingto snow in phoenix, but if
(10:49):
it's- snowing outside or rainingsometimes it doesn't hardly
even rains here some some weeks, months.
Uh, it shows you the weathereffects on the screen so not
that cool in phoenix, but it isreally cool, like if you live.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
I mean I don't know
if it is cool.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Yeah, like if you
live in Colorado, it's snowing a
lot.
But yeah, I don't know if itreally is cool, so you know,
we'll see what happens.
So the next thing that I wantedto mention too go ahead, ask
your question first.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Sorry, oh yeah, you
know.
So, as we were just kind oflike talking about all the
updates and like the newerversions of getting that these
phones will be getting, and Iwas just kind of reflecting on,
like all right, well, my s22 youknow I was getting some, but
not all of them, and even morefor the s21 I feel like, as an
average consumer and sinceyou're a, you know, an
(11:36):
enthusiast and have really spenta lot of time like just
researching and knowing aboutphones a lot of us want well, if
I'm not getting all the updates, when is a good time for me to
upgrade phones?
Speaker 1 (11:50):
That's a good
question, and I think this opens
the question to something thata lot of people ask in terms of
Samsung now advertises that ifyou buy a new phone, you get
seven years of software updates, and I think when the S22 Ultra
came out it was five years, andsome people say, well, 22 plus 5
is 27.
So my phone should still begetting all the updates, because
(12:10):
the 27 is not out yet, right,so this is basic addition.
Everybody can add 22 plus 5.
I mean most people can.
So the question is, why?
And it's because for theaverage consumer who looks at
that, they think, well, fiveyears of software updates means
every software update my phonewill get, and that's not what
Samsung means.
They mean security criticalupdates.
(12:32):
They don't mean feature updates.
So unfortunately there's somefine print in these, like you're
going to get software updatesfor X number of years.
And when they say seven yearsfor the S24, they don't mean
that your S24 is going to begetting the new version that the
S30 gets, because that's notgoing to happen Probably.
A lot of things can't get pushedbecause newer processors allow
new capabilities.
(12:52):
That's the whole reason thatnew software comes out with new
hardware.
A lot of the AI stuffspecifically like the new
processors, like the newSnapdragons, have an AI
coprocessor which allows it toprocess some of this stuff
faster.
And if you were to do that onS21, it would grind your phone
to a halt Because some of thatstuff AI wasn't a big deal
(13:13):
really with the S21 yet becausethat was at the beginning of
COVID time and there wasn't alot of AI push back then, so a
lot of AI tasks weren't beingdone on device yet, and so it
would really destroy theperformance of your phone.
So it's not like Samsung's notbeing like.
Oh, I just want to nickel anddime everyone, which, of course,
they do want to make money, butthey can't really push some of
these features to something likethe S21 because the processors
(13:35):
aren't in a position to handleit and still get good battery
life, like you would have aterrible experience with your
phone.
So in my opinion, to answer thatquestion because it's a good
question I think every threeyears is a good upgrade cycle
for people these days.
That's my personal opinion, just kind of doing this every
day and kind of thinking aboutwhere phones are from a maturity
(13:55):
level of hardware and balancingthat with, like, software
features.
If you upgrade every threeyears, you're always going to be
mostly on the most recentsoftware feature set wise, like
you're going to get all thenewest features, and that's
basically where you are right.
Like yes 25 is coming out, soit's probably a good time for
you to upgrade.
Like you, you did an upgradefor two cycles and that was fine
because you pretty much havegotten all the features for the
(14:17):
last few years and now thatyou're starting to miss out on a
couple of key features, maybeit's time to upgrade as as the
average consumer who wants to.
You know who's an averageconsumer who still cares about
their tech and they want theirphone to still be relatively
current.
I'm not talking about, like yourgrandmother, who just uses it
to like text you every like twoor three days, or maybe video
call you once a week.
(14:37):
Obviously, they don't need toupgrade their phone every three
years.
They could upgrade it every sixor seven years and, and as long
as it works and the battery'sstill operational they don't
care.
But I'm talking about people whoare in the working person's
demographic, like maybe 25 to 55.
You care about your phoneworking, you have family, you've
got a job, you need it to workat a pretty high level and you
(14:59):
want the features to becompatible.
So that's a good question.
The other features that arereally interesting you've got AI
, writing assistant, chat assistand now the Galaxy S24 Ultra
and all those other phones thatget the AI features for 6.1.1,.
They're getting the smartsuggested replies that the Z
Flip 6 had where it wouldsuggest, on the cover screen,
like some replies.
(15:20):
But here's where they get youwith this.
Samsung is definitely trying tomake some money here.
They're only going to give youthe smart suggested replies on
the S series and the Fold.
It's on the Fold 6 now I haveit on here.
It wasn't on here until I gotthe recent update.
That was only a flip featurebecause it was on the cover
screen.
But now, if you have a Fold oryou have an S series, you only
(15:43):
get suggested replies if youhave this guy right here.
No, you need to have a watch 7or watch ultra one of the newest
watches because the smartsuggested replies will only show
up on your watch.
Basically, they're thinkinglike that's a small screen, just
like the flip, so it makessense, whereas maybe it doesn't
make as much sense for a bigphone like the fold or the s24
ultra, but that's a little bitof a cash grab.
They're like yeah, you couldhave this cool feature with
(16:04):
AI-suggested replies to all ofyour WhatsApp messages and your
other text messages, but only ifyou buy the latest watch.
As far as I know, it doesn'twork on like Watch 6 or Watch 5
Pro.
Like even one-year-old watches,which is that's not.
I don't know.
That's not great.
You've also got a couple ofother cool features for
productivity.
You've also got a couple ofother cool features for
(16:25):
productivity.
You've got enhancedmulti-window Smart Select also
will offer suggested actionsbased on what you suggest.
Easily copying and moving files.
Basically, you can just choosethe destination in a pop-up
window and easily return to theoriginal folder when done.
These are features that I wouldpersonally use a lot because I
do a lot of productivity on myphone, so those are things that
(16:49):
I would enjoy.
And then a lot of the camerafeatures which, like I said I
told you a lot of these aregoing to come to the s22 ultra
as well.
Um, the portrait studio autozoom for, um, the flex camera.
This is a z flip feature only, but it'll come to the older
flips.
Uh, instant slow-mo, as far asI know.
I think the s22 ultra isgetting that.
A lot of people are speculatingabout the S22 Ultra.
It's kind of funny because Imade a post where I was calling
(17:10):
out the fact that Samsung didn'tput the S22 series in the press
release for One UI 6.1.1.
Because they didn't.
It said here's the supporteddevices, and there was no S22.
It wasn't there.
So the average consumer wouldlook at that and be like, oh,
I'm not getting it.
And so of course I said in thearticle it's still likely it's
going to get some features, because we had heard from a
community forum moderator thatsome of them would happen.
And then after I post that SamMobile, they make a post like
(17:33):
some people misconstrued the S22will still get some features.
I was like whoa guys.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Hey, don't subtweet
me.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
If you're going to
say something, go ahead and call
me out.
Go ahead and link to the postso we can get some of those
valuable backlinks.
We need the SEO.
If you're going to piggybackoff my post over here, at least,
at the very least, just hit uswith the backlink.
We're trying to get some stufftoo.
We love you guys as well.
It's all friendly competition, but at least a little backlink
(18:00):
for us.
Anyway, lots of other stuff.
I highly recommend readingsmith's post.
It's super long, I think it'slike 3,000, 3,500 words, but
it's great.
And also the videos I have.
Uh, what do you think toriexcited about?
6.1.1?
I mean obviously less sobecause you're not getting every
feature.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
I'm getting
everything, but you know, I I
really am, uh, and because, like, I really like and I was kind
of reflecting on this earlierjust how much ai and ai
capabilities are starting to,you know, creep more and more
into our lives and like lookingat the usefulness of it, and so
(18:33):
I'm excited especially with that, the sketch to draw feature.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
That's what I'm
really looking for, yeah,
sketched image.
It's a great feature.
I mean, I think you'll have funplaying with it too.
I mean, like I said, obviouslyif you have kids or if you have
a nephew or something like that, they're gonna love it.
So, you know, pull that out.
You know the holidays arecoming up.
It's a great way if you have anewer galaxy phone to impress,
even if you don't have kids, butlike your younger nephews or
other younger family members.
(18:57):
When you're at the holidaygatherings, just bust out the s
pen, start showing them somecool stuff, like, like my son
loves that.
He loves Pixel Studio, on thePixel as well.
Like he thinks the AIgeneration stuff is really cool.
Now, obviously I don't want to.
I don't, we don't spend a tonof time doing it.
Just because I don't want tolike, I don't want to skew his
view of reality becauseobviously it's AI generated
content.
I want him to be more creativehimself, but I'm like, you know
(19:31):
it's fun, but I try to explainto them exactly what it's doing.
I think that's important too.
Obviously, I'm not going totell anybody else how to parent
their kids, but try to explainto your kids, like, what's
happening when it does it.
It's hard to explain to afour-year-old, but as he gets
older, try to educate him alittle more, because I
personally don't want my kids tobe shoving stuff into their
polar integrals into the Circleto search, and that's the only
way they get their homework done.
I'd like them to know some stuff.
Ai is a great tool, but it'snot necessarily the only tool
that we need access to.
I think you would probablyagree as well.
(19:55):
So that's One UI 6.1.1.
That was the massive story.
We've got tons of stuff on it.
We've got like 10 articles onthe website with everything you
could ever want to know, including the really long one
with the whole features detailed.
I've got three videos up onYouTube.
I've been absolutely busting mybutt to get content up with
features that are lesser-known,features that you might want to
know about.
I covered some camera samples.
(20:15):
That's the other thing.
I forgot to mention Our oldbuddy Ice Universe.
We don't have it here yet, buthe lives in the Asian region.
He got the update.
He took some pictures andposted them on twitter, so I
went through those in the videoand analyzed them a little bit
for the improvements.
I will say for those who haves24 ultra good things coming.
This camera update looks likeit's pretty big.
We were promised great cameraimprovements with 6.1.1.
(20:37):
It looks like they delivered, because the zoom looks better
overall, better dynamic, betterperformance in low light.
The only thing that makes me alittle upset, though, is he
didn't take any nighttime shots, although I guess you know, to
be fair, I know how it worksLike he got the update and he
took them immediately.
It was daytime there, yeah, sohe didn't have time.
He wanted to get them upquickly because you know he's
(20:58):
got to make that Twitter moneytoo, just like everybody else
got to make their money makingcontent.
So you got to be first, you gotto get the impressions, you got
to get paid, but it'd be niceif he would added some nighttime
shots he could have by now.
I've been so busy I haven'tlooked but check out my video,
going over kind of in detail mythoughts.
Of course, when I get it nextweek I don't have it, but when I
get it, the night time shotsand we'll go through those next
(21:22):
week on the podcast.
Hopefully next week we'll havea longer show, since Tori and I
won't be kind of headed off toan event Next up on the news
list, and this is a huge one.
I just included this onebecause I personally am excited
about this native Google Driveapp is finally coming to the
Snapdragon X Elite laptops, which would be the one I have
(21:43):
right here on this table theGalaxy Book 4 Edge.
You guys have heard me, in fact, I think, if you go all the way
back to the very first episodeof this podcast I had gotten
talking about it.
Yeah, I had just gotten thislaptop and I think the very
first hardware segment we didwas me talking about this laptop
and I said I love the laptop.
Battery life's great.
I could honestly use it over myMacBook if I wanted, except for
(22:04):
one big thing there is noGoogle Drive app.
None Like you can't install aGoogle Drive desktop on this
because it doesn't compile withSnapdragon.
It's been announced now byQualcomm's CEO at their
developer conference that Googlehas worked with them to develop
Google Drive 4.
And Jim and I is going off onall my phones because I said
Google yeah, so Google'spartnered with them to develop
(22:28):
Google Drive for the Book 4 Edgeand it's coming, but it's not
coming right now.
It says Q4, and usually whencompanies say Q4, they mean
around December 31st of 2024.
So you can expect it on orbefore December 31st, but I
wouldn't put any stock in itbefore then.
In fact, usually when companiessay Q4, they assume that people
(22:49):
will forget about it around thetime of the holidays and then
they'll have some time to waituntil, like, the last week of
December Probably not the 31st,but, you know, between Christmas
and New Year's.
If you have a Book 4 Edge or aSnapdragon laptop, just go on
there and check for it.
It'll probably be theresometime between the 25th and
the 31st.
That'd be my guess.
So that's really good news.
Though I'll start using thislaptop way more, actually
(23:16):
because I like it when I go out, when I'm on the go and
traveling.
My MacBook is still my favoritemachine for productivity.
It's just a beast.
You can't compare them.
This laptop is $1,600.
The MacBook was $5,000.
You can't really compare.
There's a huge price difference.
But this one is lighter, performance is great, battery
life is still great and formedia consumption I actually
like it a little better.
And it integrates with mySamsung phones.
I get all my messages.
(23:37):
I can control my phone fromhere using Samsung's continuity.
So I like it when I go out andI'm just running errands, when
I'm at a coffee shop ortraveling.
So really good, I'll use it alot more.
What else?
The Galaxy Z Fold SpecialEdition.
First images have arrived, andI don't think, tori, you had a
busy week so you probably didn'tsee them yet.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
No, I have not.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Here's the exclusive
look that Android Headlines
provided.
We wrote it up, but AndroidHeadlines had the exclusive
first look.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
This is the image
right here of the Galaxy Z Fold
Special Edition.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
So you guys will see
it there on the screen.
A couple of things to take awayfrom this.
And I called this out.
I wrote this article because itactually was breaking during
the day, us time so I was up,samit was asleep One of the rare
times where he's at theopposite is usually true,
because usually news is breaking, samsung News breaks Korean
time, but this actually leakedAndroid headlines.
(24:31):
It's a US website, just like us, and they had exclusive here.
By the way, if anybody hascontent you guys want to leak,
sammygrewcom, jeff, atSammyGrewcom, we need some
exclusive leak partnerships andhey, I got a little bit of money
potentially.
You know I'm just saying, likethese other websites, I got a
little bit of money potentially.
You know, I'm just saying, likethese other websites, I got
some resources.
(24:53):
So if you have some exclusive, information and you are a leaker
and you're listening to thispodcast and you're like, hey, I
need to make some revenue.
Well, we can talk, jeff atSammyGrewcom.
That's all I'm saying.
Anyway, android Headlinesexclusive.
They have a few things that youcan notice.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
First, it's a heck of
a lot thinner than the z-fold
six.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
Yeah, I actually put
a picture of my z-fold six in
folded form with the hinge sideby side, but it's way thinner
than this, this one, this deviceis already thin, like look at
it I mean yeah, no, yeah, youguys can see it, but that looks
even thinner yeah, I mean, itreally looks like I mean I know
samsung won't skimp on the hingedurability, but it looks
dangerous kind of.
I mean it looks dangerously thinbut it looks nice.
(25:34):
I mean, obviously, when it'sfolded it's going to satisfy one
of my big complaints, which isthat when it's folded it's
thicker than an S24 Ultra.
I want it to be the same size.
It's only supposed to be.
I put it at the end of thisarticle 10.6 millimeters thick.
So only a few millimetersthicker than an S24 Ultra.
Barely thicker.
That is insane, first of all,and then the other things you
(25:57):
can notice.
The cover display is a lotwider.
It kind of looks like almostthe width of an S24 Ultra.
It's not quite but it's almost.
And it's actually wider thanthis guy which we'll talk about
in the hardware segment.
This is a Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
This guy already has a prettywide cover display.
The brushed titanium look onthe back.
Do you like the brushedtitanium look?
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Troy, I do it looks
nice, huh, it looks like a very
nice quality phone for what, I'massuming you're paying.
If it were to ever come to theUS, you'd be paying.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
And you know we're
going to pay a lot of money to
import it because all the peoplewho will let you import it
they're going to jack up theprice even more than it costs in
Korea because they know youcan't get it.
So, when I go to buy it fromlike eBay or another retailer,
it's probably going to retailfor the equivalent of like two
grand $2,200 in Korea, oh forsure.
And then it's going to chargeme like $3,000.
They're going to be like sorry, that's the $800, not
(26:54):
availability tax, so you can'tbuy it in your country.
And then so, first of all, thatis actually titanium, because,
remember, sumit covered the leakwhere there is a titanium
backplate on this phone.
So that's actually titanium.
It's not just a brushedtitanium.
Look, it is titanium.
Oh, that's cool.
The other crazy thing is it hasS-Pen support still, despite
(27:15):
being this thin, which is crazy, because the digitizer that has
to fit in the display has totake up some space.
So this is actually like atechnological marvel.
I mean, samsung puts this out.
I mean they're basically sayingF you to us and everybody else
who criticized the fact thatthey can't innovate anymore.
They're like Johnny Ive theyjust did it.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
They're like Johnny
Ive, they just did it.
They're like Johnny Ive, orwhoever said that at Apple.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
I forgot who it was.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
They just did it.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Phil Schiller from
Apple.
He said can't innovate my ASS.
That's what they're saying tous.
They're saying we can'tinnovate and obviously, if that
happens, if this phone lookslike this, if this is real and
the S Pen works flawlessly onthe main display, I'm impressed.
I'll shut up, I take backwhatever.
I said the last few weeks, Imean the last few weeks when the
Fold 6 launched.
(27:56):
I take it all back, because ifthe S Pen works, that's a modern
technical marvel, the digitizerfitting in there, all the other
foldables, right, they don'thave S Pen support.
So, like the Vivo, all thoseones in China, and the Pixel,
they don't have S Pen support.
So of course they can bethinner than the Z Fold 6,
(28:17):
because the digitizer for the SPen doesn't have to fit in there
.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
So if they do this.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
This is insane.
Plus, not to mention 5megapixel under-display camera.
On the front huge upgrade.
The rear camera housing looksdifferent than the Fold 6.
Here, yeah, front huge upgrade.
The rear camera housing looksdifferent than the fold six.
Here you can see this one'smore rounded on the fold six.
This one's a little moresquared off like yeah, it
doesn't and it's also a lotbigger.
And we know why it's a lotbigger it's because it no longer
has a 50 megapixel primarysensor it's got a 200 megapixel
(28:45):
primary sensor, the same oneit's in the s24 ultra, so this
would be, uh, probably samsung'sbiggest, most impressive
innovation in a long time.
Unfortunately, retailavailability looks like it's
gonna be china and korea, so youknow they are gonna make their
best phone or the mostimpressive innovation wise since
(29:05):
the original z-fold, andthey're not gonna release it
globally, which is frustrating.
But if you are the averageperson, you don't want to import
one, which again don'trecommend it, unless you just
have multiple phones.
You've got a lot of money toblow, you don't have to worry
about money and you don't careif the 5G works.
So you need all three of thosethings See.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
I'm in the unique
position.
Speaker 1 (29:29):
I'm not bragging, but
we do this.
I do this for a living right,so it's a business expense.
I could write it off.
I don't necessarily care if the5G works, because I do have a
bunch of other phones and it'sto make content, to bring you
guys the review of the phone.
So for me it's a write-off.
It's not something that get 5Geverywhere If you use any US
(29:54):
carrier, and some of them won'teven work.
Verizon's not going to work onthis at all, because Verizon
never works on internationalimports.
It's basically going to beT-Mobile and AT&T, and only
T-Mobile is probably going tohave wide 4G capability.
Almost none of them are goingto have 5G, fully 5g.
So anyway, uh, this is uh veryinteresting.
(30:16):
Um, I, I can't wait to get one.
Supposedly it's launching nextmonth.
We will bring it, we willcompare it, we will make videos,
we will talk about it on thispodcast.
So make sure you're subscribedto all the things youtube, the
website, everywhere we got sammygrew is all over the place.
We're taking over the wholeinternet.
Before we get into the secondhalf here of the stories, I'm
(30:36):

(31:59):
advantage today.
All right, guys, we are back,so we've got a few more news
stories.
Then we're going to talk aboutPixel 9 Pro Fold Terrible name,
briefly touch on the iPhone 16event and then we got a couple
questions to answer, so quickstories to run down before we
finish.
Samsung is really phasing outSamsung messages.
We talked about this many times.
(32:19):
It turns out I was wrong.
Hey, I always admit when I'mwrong.
I'm not like some people on theInternet as.
I've said before some of theseguys double down when they're
wrong and they're like I was notwrong, it's just something
changed.
No, I was wrong.
I said when this originallystarted happening.
I apologize to Apex as well, mycolleague on YouTube, sally,
and he's a great guy.
He made a video saying it lookslike Samsung messages are going
away.
(32:39):
I made the post saying thatdoesn't look like.
There's no evidence of that andthere wasn't at the time but
saying they probably won't getrid of Samsung Messages.
They are.
So they're now pushing bannersinside the Samsung Messages app
to people who are still using itas the default, saying you need
to switch to Google Messages.
So Samsung is actually puttingthat in their own app.
(33:00):
So that suggests to me it'sabout time to jump off that
sinking ship.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
It's like the Titanic
.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
It's like Leonardo
DiCaprio action.
You're about to be out on theraft.
Someone's going to leave you tofreeze to death, so you might
as well go ahead and migrateover to Google.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Messages.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
We have a tutorial on
how to do that.
Luckily See, that's a greatsegue there.
You've got to always be closing.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
That's the key Always
be closing A B C right.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
So we have a tutorial
.
I'll drop in the show notes.
It's probably time to go aheadand just migrate on over there.
No, problem.
It's a great app.
Nothing wrong with GoogleMessages.
I just was hoping they weren'tgoing to really do that, but it
looks like they are.
You can now do a bunch of othercool stuff with Circle to
Search, and this is actuallymaking me think that Samsung
might get rid of another Samsungfeature in favor of a Google
(33:45):
feature.
We talked about Smart Selectbefore, where you can crop
images, and I told you how I useit for social media, like
cropping instagram posts andstuff and sharing to twitter.
Well, now you can do the samething with circle to search.
So google announced that youcan now crop images on your
screen, share them directly tosocial, save them to your
devices basically everythingthat smart select has done for
years and so now I wonder, like, eventually, is samsung just
(34:08):
going to say smart select, wedon't need to maintain it
anymore, because Google alreadyoffers that service?
Circle to search is built intoiOS, so just tell people to use
that.
I mean, I hope not.
I'm not saying that's whatthey're doing now, but this was
a new feature and the other newfeature, which is very useful.
I know my wife's going to lovethis, because my wife always
asks me like when I send her alink that has a QR code in it.
(34:30):
She's like well, how am Isupposed to scan the QR code if
it's on my actual screen?
Yeah, Like if you see a QR codeon a poster somewhere.
You use your camera, no, that'sfine and it works.
But like, if someone sends youa link and there's a QR code and
you want to access it, she'slike how do I do that?
Well, now, circle to Search andthe QR code, it'll take you to
the link directly.
That's cool, so that's a goodfeature.
(34:51):
So Google's adding like a ton ofstuff to Circle, to Search.
It's only really been out sinceJanuary because it launched.
Like we talked before, googlegives Samsung a lot of
exclusives because they're suchbig partners, mainly because, as
we said before, samsung'skeeping Android afloat.
There'd be no reason to developAndroid if Samsung wasn't around
.
So Google's like hey, we bettergive them some exclusive
(35:15):
partnerships, because if theydon't keep making hardware,
there'd be no reason for us tokeep making android.
So no, um, basically theylaunched it with the s24 and
they just rolled out tons ofstuff.
We've now got qr codes, um,basically smart select now music
circle to search translation incircle to search uh, cheat on
all your math homework in circleto search.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
You got all this
stuff like it's like advanced, I
mean that's not even basiccheating.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
It's like a next
level cheating.
So they got some crazy stuffgoing on now this is an
interesting story, so me postedthis one.
Apparently there's a rumor nowthat samsung may not be doing
the XR headset we've beentalking about that.
It might actually be smartglasses instead of a headset
(35:56):
Interesting this would beinteresting.
I think more people because meand Tori were talking about this
would people wear this like outin public.
If it's a big headset, no one'sgoing to do it.
But, if it's just smart glasses, like if they look like
sunglasses or regular glasses, more people would, because, I
think you might remember, snapchat had the partnership
with Rayman, or whatever you getsnap glasses yeah, yeah, yeah,
(36:19):
I saw a decent number of peoplewearing those, I mean I'm not
really part of the Snapchatgeneration because I'm 38.
But if I were 10 years younger,I might have owned a pair of
Snapchat sunglasses.
I see no reason to buy itbecause, again, if it's a
product I'm not going to usemyself.
I still love tech, but if I'mnot going to use it myself and I
don't think I could make moneyreviewing it, I'm not going to
(36:40):
buy it.
There's those two things.
I really want it, in which caseI'll buy it and I don't
necessarily feel like I have tomake a video because I just
enjoy the hobby of tech or if Idon't necessarily find a use for
it myself.
But I know I could make moneydoing video on youtube and
people would be interestedbecause it's samsung, then I
will.
Um, these definitely fall inthe second category.
(37:01):
It's not something I feel likeI would buy if I wasn't doing
youtube.
I will buy whatever productsamsung releases in the vr xr
category just because it'sSamsung.
I reviewed the original SamsungGear VR.
I don't know if you remember, tori, it was probably before you
started using Samsung.
They had a VR product.
It was just a headset where youcould actually clip your phone
(37:22):
into it and you could use yourphone as the screen.
It was called the Gear VR andit was a long time ago, like
back in the I don't know, say, note 5 days around that time.
It's a long time ago and itactually did pretty well.
It was around for like threegenerations.
People liked them.
But that was a product where Ireviewed it, but I didn't use it
a lot after I reviewed itbecause it's just not my deal.
(37:42):
But I'm always willing to givenew product categories a chance
Because hey, like I said,sometimes I'm wrong.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
You know chance
because, hey, like I said,
sometimes I'm wrong.
You know not that often, but ithappens.
It happens just like with themessages thing.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
So I could say, well,
I don't like smart glasses, but
then I get them and be like, well, smart glasses are the bees
knees.
And then I can go on and tellyou guys about it on youtube.
So you know, if it's a productI don't necessarily love, but
it's still samsung and I knowit's going to be interesting to
the general Samsung user, I'llstill do it.
I'm not sure Sumit wasspeculating that maybe they
would have two different XRproducts.
(38:17):
Maybe one's a headset and one'sa pair of glasses.
I don't know, but I think thisnew leak makes me think that
some of the other leakersbecause Ice Universe hasn't said
anything yet, so he's the onlyone that like.
If he says it, I 100% believeit.
But he's not said that this isdefinitely launching in October.
All he's really said is thatthe full special edition, the
(38:41):
S24 FE and the Tab S10 seriesare going to launch in October.
He never said anything aboutthe XR headset or glasses.
I'm starting to think, given howmurky the leaks and rumors have
been on this, there's noconcrete details.
We don't have any actualpictures.
Usually, if something was goingto release in October, we'd
already have all the stuff, because we already know
everything about the fullspecial edition.
It's been leaking like a leakyfaucet for the last month.
(39:03):
We now have everything.
We've seen the design, we knowthe cameras, we know the
materials.
We know the cameras, we knowthe materials, we know the
processor.
I don't think this is going tocome out in october.
I mean, that's just my thought, because I mean otherwise we
would know for sure, like whatthey're going to launch.
Yeah, but maybe we'll let toritry it when I get the headset or
whatever it is, because youknow he's played with some vr
stuff you said you've tried someso he can bring like a more
(39:24):
experienced side.
We can both play with it.
Um, me and tori can try, try todo some tag team reviews on the
site.
I really want to try that, atleast for one product, because I
think that'd be interesting.
Here's the enthusiastperspective, here's the casual
consumer perspective.
I think we're definitely goingto do that for the S25 Ultra
because we're both going to getone.
I think that'd be a really funone, because then you can see
(39:45):
this guy who does Samsung forevery day of his life, for work,
thinks this.
But this guy who is a mathteacher at high school and uses
it, you know, for his everydaykind of work, but isn't the
maximum enthusiast, thinks this.
So in January we'll probablyboth get one and kind of talk
through that.
The last couple of rumors herethe Galaxy S25 series, which of
(40:07):
course we were just talkingabout, we're going to do the
review on.
We have this rumor.
I wrote this post up.
Every year this rumor getsstarted and it's never true.
Ice Universe says that it istrue this year.
So I'm going to say I believeit.
Okay, but for the last fouryears, every year someone says
the next S phone will not haveany Exynos processors around the
world.
That's Samsung's in-house chipand every single one will use
(40:36):
snapdragon.
And the last four years peoplesay that in like september or
october, and then we get tojanuary and it's like oh well,
no, in like half the regions inthe world the plus and the base
model have exynos and only theultra has snapdragon everywhere.
So this rumor got put out there.
I forgot by who, but I wrote out, I wrote up post so you can
check out the link on thewebsite.
And then I was very skeptical.
I said you know, this issomething we hear every year so
(40:57):
I wouldn't put too much stock init.
But I went back and updated itbecause Ice Universe chimed in
on X a little bit later and saidthis is actually true All of
them will run on Snapdragon.
This is great news for you guysaround the globe.
This is great news for you guysaround the globe.
It's not big news for our USlisteners because we get
Snapdragon regardless becauseQualcomm is a US company and
Samsung partners with them inthe US, because they get
favorable terms because it'stheir domestic market, but in
(41:20):
other markets Samsung can buyprocessors from themselves
cheaper because SamsungSemiconductor is a subdivision
of Samsung.
Samsung is a massive company andthe mobile is just one business
and Semiconductors is asubdivision of Samsung.
Samsung's a massive company andthe mobile is just one business
and semiconductors is another.
They actually all run asseparate business units, which
is interesting, but they allpool the revenue to the big
Samsung.
It's interesting how Samsung isstructured, but you know,
(41:42):
obviously, if Samsung Mobilewants to buy Samsung
semiconductor products, they say, hey, samsung, samsung, they're
like that Spider-Man meme.
They're looking at each otherand then they sell themselves a
processor for a really cheapprice and it's a really good
deal.
So I don't know.
Ice Universe says it, I'll sayI believe it.
Maybe you should believe it ifyou're in a region where you
want to buy an S25, non-ultraand you don't like Exynos, which
(42:07):
most people don't.
They prefer Snapdragon becauseof some of the benchmarks and
the thermals.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Good news.
Hopefully you won't have todeal with Exynos this year.
Speaker 1 (42:15):
That'd be really good
.
Okay, so let's transition nowout of the news and into the
hardware.
A little bit of shorter news.
Corey and I usually just rambleon for like an hour about the
news, but since we've got to goto the show and get some dinner,
let's talk hardware, because Ido have an interesting piece of
hardware in here for you guys.
Today I got the Pixel 9 ProFold here.
Looks really nice, which isvery nice.
(42:36):
Here's how it looks unfolded.
Show that to you there, tori aswell and it is a great piece of
hardware.
I do have some things to sayabout the software.
As you guys can imagine, I am asoftware guy.
I mean that is kind of how myYouTube channel started was
reviewing software and apps andall that stuff.
So, first of all, it has abigger screen.
It's hard for me to hold themboth back here with a mic, but I
(42:58):
am making a video on this whichwill be up next week.
It has a bigger screen whenunfolded than the Z Fold 6.
It isn't as tall as the Z Fold6, though the aspect ratio is
still a little more square, butit is a lot less square than the
original Fold from Google lastyear and the cover display is
obviously a lot wider than the ZFold 6.
I can actually probably hold upthe two cover displays side by
(43:20):
side because they're a littlebit smaller.
Holding them up in unfoldedform is a little harder side by
side, just because I have togrip both of them with the mic
here in front of me.
But here's what I want to sayabout this.
I was wrong about the camerabeing amazingly better than the
Z Fold 6.
This camera is good.
I do think it's probably betterthan the Z Fold 6, but it's not
(43:44):
as good as the 9 Pro XL, whichwe knew, because they don't have
the same camera sensors.
But what you'll notice here isthat, you know, just like a lot
of the other folds that are herein the us, it doesn't have,
like a you know, massive, youknow four camera array like some
of the chinese manufacturers, and it's not as good as, like
you know, it's not as good asthe vivo foldable.
I have the xiaomi mi mix foldfinally coming.
(44:06):
I imported one today.
I have so many, many phones Igot to do something.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
I got to do something
with these phones.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
I mean there are
people who have more than me,
like Flossie Carter, but not toomany people.
I have way too many stacked upin this office and then I have
more at home.
I just forget about phones, like Tori when he said he wanted
to try a flip phone.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
I forgot.
Speaker 1 (44:26):
I even had a Razr.
I was like, hey, I have a Razrthat I haven't booted in like
months.
Do you want to just have thatand you can just play with it?
I just forget that I even havethem.
But here's what I want to sayabout this the hardware is great
, but the software on this phoneI don't want to sugarcoat it it
still sucks for a book-stylefoldable.
This is why Samsung is aheadwith book-style foldables.
So right now and again.
(44:48):
We talked about the specialedition earlier.
This is going to change in likea month when that comes out.
But their hardware is, in myopinion, behind everyone else,
even the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
This hardware is better becausethe screen is wider.
I don't want to say thatunfolded it's better, but the
crease is less noticeable thanon the Z Fold, it's less
(45:08):
noticeable than on the Z Fold, for sure.
This one is not as noticeablewhen you look at it straight on
than it is on the z-fold.
It's less noticeable than onthe z-fold, for sure, um.
This one is not as noticeablewhen you look at it straight on,
uh, than it is on the full, um.
So that's one thing, but thesoftware is just.
I'll tell you a couple things, because you know we don't have
forever, but let me tell yousome things that bother me.
On the z-fold six, you can seta different wallpaper on the
(45:31):
outside screen versus the insidescreen.
Now, of course, being the idiotthat I am, I didn't do that
before this video, before thepodcast, because I had forgot
that I was going to talk aboutthis, but let me just show you.
Here's an awesome dragonwallpaper that Jonathan was
looking at.
He wanted me to set.
Now I have a dragon wallpaperon the main display and then,
(45:52):
when I fold it, I got thisbeautiful mountain wallpaper,
both from one for wall slash, thematic Our good friends one
for studio, shameless plug.
Right there, go check out theirapps, which will be in the show
notes as well.
You can't do this on the pixelfold, and not only that.
So if you look at the screenhere, let me actually clear all
the notifications so you guyscan see the wallpaper.
You see, I have this other oneon the lock screen, this one
(46:15):
with this guy.
Yep, it's like a lion, a femalelion or whatever yeah.
This was also from Thematica.
When you open it, the aspectratio, look how much zoomed it
is.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
It clips the
wallpaper.
Speaker 1 (46:27):
It's like the whole
thing.
Yeah, it doesn't do that on thefull.
The aspect ratio sets correctly, and this is almost every
wallpaper app.
It's not just Vuke's apps, sohe's not doing anything wrong.
I tested other ones.
Not only that, and here's theother part.
That's terrible.
You can't even have separateapp layouts for the inside
versus the outside.
What Like the?
(46:49):
app layout that you have on theoutside.
See how I have like these fiveapps or whatever on the home
screen.
If you scroll over, I havethese five apps on this screen.
Those apps have to be the sameas the ones that are along the
bottom on here.
If you delete an app from inhere, like if I delete, let's
say I delete Slack I mean, obviously I have to put this
back later because that's whatwe use for the website
communication but say I deleteSlack and then I go to the main,
(47:14):
the cover display.
Check it out Slack is gone onthe cover display too, If I do
that on my Z Fold 6, I can setthe two app layouts separately,
because who the heck needs touse the same apps on the cover
as they do on the interiorscreen?
My outer apps are all mycommunication apps because I'm
doing stuff on the go on thecover, and the inside ones are
like my games and my media, myshopping, all the stuff that I
(47:35):
want to use like on the bigscreen, like when I'm scrolling
through like Amazon or eBay, Iwant to see bigger product
photos or I'm playing a game orI'm watching Netflix or YouTube.
I don't want all those on thecover because I'm not going to
watch YouTube on the coverscreen.
I don't understand this.
It doesn't make any.
And also, customization is onething, multitasking is another.
(47:57):
You can't do multitasking likeyou can on Z Fold.
No one does it like Samsung.
So you can't have three windowsopen, even on the Pixel Fold.
It's got a bigger main display, but you can't do three windows
On the Z Fold 6, I can open upthree windows and have like five
other windows open and littlepop-up windows that I can put to
the side.
I can only do two on the PixelFold Very limited little pop-up
(48:26):
windows that I can put to theside.
I can only do two on the on thepixel full very limited, and uh
, it's, it's not not great.
Um, yeah, so I mean, I justthink, as much as I like the
pixel fold hardware, I don'tthink I could use a foldable for
productivity that right nowisn't made by samsung yeah, it's
, that isn isn't made fromSamsung, because I don't get
multitasking which what deviceis made for multitasking more
than a book-style foldable?
It's got the biggest screen on aphone, so that's the number one
(48:46):
thing you want to do with abook-style foldable is do all
your productivity, and then youcan't set up separate app
layouts.
So I can't even use the coverscreen and the interior screen
in different ways, which is thewhole point.
Isn't the point of having abook style foldable, like the
cover to screen is for whenyou're on the go and then when
you're like somewhere and youwant to enjoy your content or
whatever, you open it up?
Yep, you should be able to havedifferent apps on your home
(49:09):
screen because I don't have tosearch through, find my media
apps in the app drawer and allthat stuff all the time.
Plus, the Pixel doesn't haveapps, edge or anything like
Samsung and One UI either, soyou can't quickly access them.
You can access them from thetaskbar, but there aren't other
easy ways to access themone-handed.
So camera looks a little better, but I mean, I'll be honest with
you, I was expecting this toblow me away and I do like it,
(49:32):
but given that it's the sameprice, almost as the Z Fold 6,
for similar storageconfiguration.
Google doesn't give you as goodof trade-in.
Even though the special editionis coming, and obviously not
coming to the US, I would stillsay, if you need a foldable
right now, I would still buy theZ Fold 6.
I don't like the narrow coverdisplay, but the camera isn't
that much better on here.
(49:52):
If the camera blew me away, Iwould say, well, maybe I would
lean towards this cause, thewider cover screen plus the
camera, but the camera doesn'tblow me away.
It's, it's a little better, butit's not like so much better.
So, uh, I like it, but uh, I'mgoing to say Samsung is still
ahead and, uh, if the fold, it'sall over for everyone.
(50:19):
Like we said in the lastepisode, samsung is going to
clean house of every otherAndroid manufacturer with
foldables, just like they didwith the Galaxy S6 with slab
phones, where they're like hey,htc and LG, motorola, time to
pack your stuff.
Might as well get out of theAndroid phone game because we're
just going to take over thewhole space.
That same thing is going tohappen with foldables.
If the Special Edition and the7 basically look the same and
have the same features, plus OneUI 7 will come to the special
(50:42):
edition before it becomes the 7.
So it's going to be game overif that's the case.
Iphone 16 event previewthoughts.
I only have one thought.
I don't really have a lot tosay about this.
We'll talk about it after theevent next week, because
there'll be some funny stufffrom the event.
There's always funny stuff inthe Apple events to make fun of.
My only thought is like boring, super boring, going to put me
(51:05):
to sleep, boring style.
I think Samsung planned it sothat One UI 6.1.1 comes out in
the US and the S24 on Monday, because that's the day of the
Apple event.
So they want something.
They still want Samsung in thenews.
That's probably why they did it, which is great, because I'll
be playing with 6.1.1 and makingvideos and then I'll just watch
the Apple event later, becauseI know it's going to be like
this is our phone, same phonefrom last year.
(51:27):
It's got two megapixels more onthe camera.
We invented a new word for thissoftware feature, but it's a
feature that Samsung has had for10 years, and we put a slightly
faster processor in here, butthe phone still can't take
advantage of it because it hasno multitasking capabilities.
Ios 18 gives you the ability tomake your icons look completely
(51:47):
ugly by turning them all dark, but you still can't add custom
icon packs.
I just summarized the wholeevent for you.
You don't even need to watch itnow.
Yeah, no, he really did.
Basically, here's the samephone from last year.
It comes in a different colorso that you can tell that you
bought the new one and wastedyour money by upgrading to a
phone that's the same.
The camera's improved by acouple megapixels.
We renamed a couple of softwarefeatures that Samsung released
(52:10):
10 years ago to use them as abudward to market the phone and
a bud word to market the phone.
And iOS 18 now lets youcustomize your icons, which
Android has let you do for 15years, but you can't even
customize them fully, so isn'tthat completely useless?
Anyway, that's pretty much thesummary, so you don't really
need to watch the Apple event, but I'll watch it anyway so we
(52:31):
can talk about some of thefunnier pull quotes that they
have there.
So we kind of did pretty wellin time 53 minutes here.
We've got a couple of questionsin the Q&A.
Tori, you have one from ourfriend Galaxy.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
Nexus.
We apologize for getting thename wrong.
Speaker 1 (52:43):
So he told us we were
like G-L-X-Y, we were like
spelling it out like some idiotsover here on the Sammy Guru
podcast.
We apologize, but, tori, you'vegot the name right and you've
got the question queued up right.
Tori, do you want?
Speaker 2 (52:54):
to go ahead and read
it to us?
Speaker 1 (52:55):
Yeah, I do.
We appreciate these greatquestions.
By the way, it makes the Q&A alot easier for us to do.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Yeah, it does, and
you're always on it, so thank
you.
So Galaxy Nexus, he says Do youguys think it would behoove
Samsung to partner up withMicrosoft?
Slash Bing AI?
That's a good question.
Speaker 1 (53:27):
First of all, I love
the choice of the word behoove.
Love that word, it's a greatword so I commend that.
I'm a big fan of that word.
So a couple of things.
I think I mean it would be aninteresting partnership.
I mean they kind of alreadyhave in some sense partnered
with Microsoft because obviouslythey released this co-pilot PC,
the Snapdragon PC, with theBook 4 Edge.
(53:48):
But the thing is, you've got toremember, they also are
partnered with Google Google.
So it's not like Samsung can'tjust go out and partner with
Microsoft and bring co-pilot AIto the Galaxy phones and be like
Google sucks OpenAI sucks useBing AI.
It's great because Google stillmakes Android and they also have
a bunch of Google features ontheir phone and every Android,
(54:10):
at least in the US and Europe, uses Google services.
So you can't just be like, well, google sucks.
And then the users will be like, but wait, isn't Gmail the
default email app?
Isn't Google Messages now thedefault?
You told me to switch fromSamsung to Google Messages, so
that would be a little confusing, I think the thing at the end
of the day is, I think Samsunghas a good strategy.
I think Galaxy AI for on-devicestuff, along with Google for
(54:34):
like circle to search and stufflike that.
Plus, you can bring Gemini.
I think what Samsung should dois they should convince Google
to license some Gemini featuresto them, not convince them just
like force them, because, again, what choice do they have?
Like Samsung keeps the wholeAndroid ecosystem afloat, just
be like, hey, we're going tostop using Android, or you know
not that, but just you knowstrong.
(54:55):
Arm them into saying, hey, wewant some Gemini advanced
features that people have to payfor on other phones, we want
them exclusively to Galaxy.
So if you buy an S25, not onlydo you get all the Galaxy Eye
features.
You're going to get Geminiadvanced features for free.
You'd have to pay for GoogleOne.
They could do that.
I mean, they really couldGoogle.
What are they going to do?
They're going to be like oh no,we want the features to sell
(55:15):
some Pixels.
The number of phones Samsungsells and the value of Android
is like billions of dollars overwhat the Pixel lineup is worth.
Pixel is great and it brings ina little money.
It lets them showcase what theythink Android should look like
for hardware.
But if Samsung wanted this, they could get it.
I think Google is way ahead interms of AI over Microsoft, so I
(55:39):
would kind of prefer theypartner with Google and keep
doing Galaxy Eye as well.
Speaker 2 (55:42):
What do you think,
dory?
No, I agree as well, you know, again kind of like as we're kind
of talking about earlier, withjust how AI is kind of creeping
in and just having more easilyaccessibility.
They already built into thephone and so.
But I do agree that you know wecan't bring in all this stuff
and also be like hey, google, you also suck.
Speaker 1 (56:02):
Yeah, that'd be a
contradictory message.
Yeah, it would be like yeah, use being AI, it's the best.
Speaker 2 (56:09):
And then, like you're
signing to your Gmail account
in order to set up your Androidphone.
Everything is like connected,it's like everything is google,
and then you get to the lastpage.
Speaker 1 (56:22):
It's like man don't
use any google ai services.
That's garbage.
Only use copilot bing.
We're partnering with microsoft.
Hashtag sponsored.
Yeah, you can't.
Really.
I don't think that'd work no,it wouldn't you can have your
hands in a lot of buckets, butthose buckets are just a little
too contradictory, you know.
Speaker 2 (56:35):
Yeah, especially if
you have Google everything but
that one.
And so no, I would actuallylike to see it, you know,
because I'm starting to see alot of like.
Everything is like AI andthere's so many different AI
things to use.
I feel like, you know, consumers will gravitate a lot.
(56:59):
If it was just like one reallybig thing that was easily
accessible, who knows, we couldbe AI.
Speaker 1 (57:05):
Yeah, maybe not even
real people doing this podcast.
Speaker 2 (57:07):
I know we could be AI
right now.
We could be listening to ananswer from two AI chatbots.
It's possible.
Speaker 1 (57:14):
It's possible.
Yeah, it's possible.
Yeah.
Speaking of AI, last questiontoo, I want to give a shout out.
I don't know who this was.
I'm going to look it up and putit in the show notes.
Someone asked me last week andthis is scary, I don't know if
they work for Samsung, but ifthey do, hit me up because, like
I said, and I told you that Iwas discussing with the owner of
(57:36):
SamMobile about how they shouldmake the tablets just like
laptops and run DeX mode Someonemessaged me on Twitter, or it
was in a comment on Twitter, andthey said do you think Samsung
will add a Galaxy AI button?
Then on the keyboards?
We talked about their expensivekeyboard for the Tab S10 so
that people can easily get intoGalaxy AI, because we were
talking about how Galaxy AI iseverywhere, and I didn't really
(57:58):
think about the question untilthe day.
But then I opened our websitethis morning after I got up from
sleeping and Sumit had covereda new story.
And guess what the story saysSamsung announces that they've
added a Galaxy I button to theTab S10 keyboard.
Yep, boom.
Speaker 2 (58:13):
Whoever?
Speaker 1 (58:13):
did that impressive.
I got to find it andcongratulate you in the show
notes.
Speaker 2 (58:17):
I don't know who it
was.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
But if you work for
Samsung, definitely get in touch
with us.
Speaker 2 (58:22):
But that's pretty
scary so.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
Samsung has confirmed
there will be a Galaxy I button
on the Tab S10 keyboard.
So if you buy, I mean I willprobably buy one for the review,
but I don't know that anyoneshould buy the first part.
It's $350 for the ultra.
Yeah, I don't know about that.
Like that's expensive.
I hope they drop the price,Like the one for the tab S nine
ultra.
I have it but I did not want topay three, 50 for that, Cause
(58:44):
it's like it can't use it as afull laptop.
So maybe if they make it sothat it runs decks out of the
box and it's galaxy shortcutbutton, Maybe it'll be more
valuable.
But yeah, I don't know aboutthat.
Anyway, Tori, any otherquestions that you saw?
Speaker 2 (58:59):
No, it was just that
one, and will the S21 get the
update Right?
We answered that earlier.
I'm sorry to tell you that itlooks like that's a resounding
no.
Speaker 1 (59:11):
The S21 will be in
line to get more software
security updates, but how manymore feature updates it's going
to get I don't know because it'salmost four years old.
At this point I would recommendyou know I'm not telling you
what to do but if you have anS21 and you care about tech and
you can afford it, samsung'sprobably going to give you a
pretty solid amount of trade-infor the S25 Ultra, I would guess
(59:32):
, because they really want tohit the S21, s22 users.
You'll probably get $700, $800for your phone.
That's way more than it's worth.
Might as well pull the triggeron the S25 Ultra and, if you do
always be closing, go tosammygrucom slash preorder to
get a mystery box and you canget a free case cleaning kit,
desktop phone stand, all thatother good stuff when you do
(59:54):
preorder.
We've already got 750 peoplesigned up, so it's going to be
our biggest launch ever.
We can't wait, Huge surpriseswhich I'll be announcing
throughout the fall, on thepodcast as well, with some new
stuff that we're working on.
We're working on a ton of stufffrom the website.
Good things are coming.
If you guys like cases, I'mgoing to be getting into the
case business along with ourgood friend over at One4Studio.
(01:00:16):
So if you guys like cases andyou like his wallpapers, I'm
just saying I can't say too muchyet, but I'm just saying that.
I'm not saying but stay tunedto the podcast and the website,
because we're going to be doingsome cool stuff leading up to
the S25 launch.
Anyway, tori and I are hungry.
We got to go.
We're going to go eat someChinese food, come back here and
get ready to go.
Have a relaxing night.
(01:00:37):
We hope, hope you guys have OneUI 6.1.1 by the time we talk to
you guys and we just want toremind you guys this week to
never stop expanding your galaxy.
