Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back
everybody.
This is episode number 16 ofthe Sammy Guru podcast.
My name is Jeff Springer andwith me, as always, is my
co-host, tori.
Tori say hi, hey, how's itgoing?
And I just got back from theSamsung Developer Conference in
San Jose and it was quite a show.
We're going to talk today justpretty much about my experience
at the show.
(00:20):
So those who follow me, who arenew followers, welcome to the
show.
If you're listening for thefirst time, I know between the
last 24 hours I got like 900 newfollowers on X, tons of new
subscribers on YouTube.
The website's got a bunch oftraffic because we broke some
huge news at the SamsungDeveloper Conference.
So I'm going to talk about theexperience of the trip, how I
(00:44):
found One UI 7.0 running on somedevices.
But before we get into that, tori, how was?
your week.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
You know it has been
a very busy where we have fall
break next week.
So I'm on fall break now.
I made it through, but at aprice of staying up late to work
on grades.
Getting grades in, uh that is.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
I think grading is
probably one of the least fun
parts of teaching yeah, gradingand evaluation in general yeah I
mean it's nice when you'regiving the exam, because that
day you don't have to doanything I mean it's like it's
always nice when you go in theexam day, like I get the day off
, sort of, yeah, which is nice.
I do kind of miss that, becauseshe's like with sammy guru, I
don't ever get the day off, sortof which is nice.
I do kind of miss that, becauseshe's like with Sammy Guru, I
don't ever get the day off whereI can just go in and be like
(01:28):
hey, I get to sit here today and, just like you know, people are
just going to be doing work andI'm going to be chilling.
Usually, though, you're doingsome planning and stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
It's still nice to
have that day where you know
you've got some time to whatelse you been up to anything
else, just grading probably yeah, yeah, just grading and physics
.
My exam one this yeah comingweek, so uh all the class you're
taking right, yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
So I have that, then
a quince tomorrow and another
one, uh, the next weekend, um,but you know, I'm really looking
to just relax there.
You go, go, just relax andchill.
I need to rejuvenate, that'sthe key, yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
We actually recorded.
So, interestingly enough, werecorded episode 15.
And it hasn't been posted yet.
So it's going to be kind ofweird because this is episode 16
, but it's actually going to beposted as episode 15.
And then episode 15 will beposted as episode 16.
The reason for that is one Ijust got back from SDC and I
(02:31):
figured this is topical.
People want to hear about itright now, since there's a lot
to talk about with OneUI 7.0 andthe stuff I found there, and
then the other podcast we did.
That was actually originallyepisode 15, we did that with Max
Weinbach.
We actually did it earlier thisweek, yeah, uh, and I was going
to edit it while I was in sanjose, but then crazy stuff
happened and I couldn't.
So I was going to delay itanyway, but since that one's not
(02:54):
time sensitive, I figured Icould post it next week.
Uh, and I'll also be going tovegas next week.
So then tori and I don't haveto like log on and do it
remotely.
We can just wait and I can postthe one with Max next week.
So if you guys are waiting, maxWeinbach did join us.
We had a great time.
Did you have a?
Speaker 2 (03:13):
good time talking to
Max.
I had a really great time.
I'm super excited for you guysto see it once it comes out.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, we learned a
lot of cool stuff about.
AI Max is a very, very bigexpert in the AI field in terms
of he knows a lot about notnecessarily all the back-end
stuff, but he knows enough ofthe back-end stuff and also the
intuition of how people use it,and he has a lot of really good
insights in terms of how thetech meets the needs of the user
(03:39):
.
And we talked a little bitabout Apple versus Samsung and
what Samsung is doing right, what Samsung is doing wrong and
if there's anything that theycould do better, particularly
when it comes to AI, but alsowith regard to devices and
things.
Tori, you've been holding downthe giveaways for the website
while it's gone so thanks forthat.
(03:59):
People still able to get theirgiveaway entries while I was
traveling, because I definitelywould have forgotten to do them
if Tori wasn't taking care ofthat.
So if you guys enjoy the dailygiveaway opportunities, then you
can thank Tori, because I wouldhave forgot while I was in San
Jose, that's almost for sure.
So let's go ahead and talkabout it.
I briefly told Tori the story, but I'm basically going to be
(04:21):
telling Tori the story as I tellyou guys, because I haven't
told him the whole details.
This is my first San DiegoSamsung Developer Conference, sd
.
So I said San Diego.
I think when I was there too, Iwas like SD, I always think San
Diego, samsung DeveloperConference, sdc.
It's the first time I ever went, which is surprising.
(04:50):
But remember, you guys have toremember I taught as a professor
before I did this whole timeand this is usually in the
beginning of October, Likethat's right around like exam
time.
I can't be like just leaving, like my students be like oh yeah
, I'm just going to go for threedays to California.
So when I, when this wasn't myfull time job, I never went
because I didn't really have theopportunity and I wasn't like a
rude professor I'm not going toleave my students there to
review with a sub or somethingfor their exam.
(05:12):
I just wouldn't do that kind ofthing, even though I could have
gone and I would have went.
So this is my first time going.
I flew on Wednesday evening.
I got there at like 7 o'clockCalifornia time, checked into my
hotel.
There was a lot of talk fromvarious leakers, including Ice
Universe.
(05:32):
People were saying that weprobably wouldn't see any One UI
7.0 stuff.
So my morale was a little lowbecause I was like, hey, I
decided this last minute.
So luckily my wife is veryunderstanding and supportive of
what we're doing with thebusiness and she supports me.
I felt really bad because Idecided this last Thursday at
(05:52):
the last minute that I was goingto go to SDC.
And that's kind of late noticewhen you have two kids right,
because if you've got two smallkids, you know your partner's
then got to take care of all oftheir stuff and we have a baby
and a toddler those are distinctneed sets and my son's in
school.
So I'm like, do you mind?
You know, can you handle it?
Is it going to be cool if I go?
(06:13):
And she's like, yeah, go do it.
If it's going to be good forthe business, you know, go.
And I was like, okay, well, I'mjust going to go for basically
48 hours and really only goingto be gone like less than 48
hours.
So my morale was low Cause it'slike I just spent 1500 bucks,
came here, there's probablygoing to be no mobile news.
I'm going to show up.
It's going to be aboutrefrigerators and ovens and all
that stuff, by the way have youever seen?
(06:35):
we'll talk a little bit aboutsome of the other stuff I saw
later in the show, once we getpast the big stuff, cause wasn't
one UI 7.0.
It's just that we got so muchtraffic and so many people were.
I mean, I was getting like atone point like hundreds of
tweets like every minute and Icouldn't reply to people.
I'm sorry if someone tweeted meif you're, if you're like a
longtime follower and I didn'tsee your tweet.
It wasn't on purpose.
There's all these new peoplefollowing me and just they're
(06:57):
asking me questions Some peoplevery rudely, by the way, which I
don't appreciate.
We can appreciate, we'll talkabout that later.
Some people just like poststuff and I'm like, hey, I'm not
an animal man, calm down.
Yeah, anyway, um, we talkedabout that.
Have you ever seen theconnected refrigerators that can
like, uh, samsung hasrefrigerators where it can?
It can tell you, like if you'reat the grocery store, how much
milk you have, down to like thefraction of an ounce no, we'll
(07:19):
talk about that later.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah, it's really
cool.
I feel like I buy multiplethings because I'm like do I
have that?
Yeah, I'm already at walmart ortarget I mean presumably.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Hopefully it would
save you a lot of money, because
the refrigerator costs likefive thousand dollars so it
would need to save you a lot ofmoney over time to pay for
itself because otherwise it'sabout 3 500 to 4 000 more than a
regular refrigerator.
Regular refrigerator is like 800to 1,000 bucks, so it's like
four or five times the cost, butit is really cool and I saw
(07:50):
some other demos with that tooAnyway got up in the morning on
Thursday which was yesterday atlike 7 o'clock Because usually
when I go to shows like CES aswell I'm always itching to get
there, because I'm the kind ofguy like I don't like to be Like
rushed and I also necessarilydon't like huge crowds People
which isn't great for like techshows because there's huge
(08:10):
Crowds of people so I like to belike one of the First people
through registration.
It's like I'm not fighting andalso I can get in there and also
thinking like you know, maybethey're going to have Some kind
of breakfast.
I figure it wouldn't be kind ofextravagant, but I figured they
might have something.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
It's Samsung, they're
a multi, almost trillion dollar
company.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
They can probably
afford to have a little bit of
breakfast.
So I didn't get any breakfastfrom the hotel and I walked over
to the engine center.
It was only like a quarter milefrom my hotel.
I got up and showered, walkedover.
The doors were supposed to openat 8.30.
So I figured a lot of peoplewould be there right around 8.30
.
I got there at 8.25.
There's like no one thereexcept the Samsung employees.
(08:47):
So I guess everybody else whocomes maybe had come before.
Other journalists anddevelopers probably knew maybe
like Samsung is kind of slowwith the rollout.
So I got up there and they'relike we're not ready, you can't
come in until like 8.40.
And I was like but it says 830and they're like well, we're a
little behind, and so I was like, okay, so I sit outside of the
convention center they have areally cool banner.
(09:08):
I'll put the picture up here.
I'll put them in as I talk, some pictures that I took so you
guys can see.
I took a lot of pictures ofvarious things, took a selfie
outside with the SDC, theSamsung logo, in the background
and they have like a little coolblob emoji that is like one of
the mascots of SDC.
I took a picture with that inthe background and took a
picture of it, you know, just byitself, and then just kind of
(09:29):
waited super hot there, by theway.
I thought I was getting a break, you know, usually like the Bay
area is like a lot cooler thanPhoenix.
And so when we landed, I waslike, let me check out the
weather, it's probably going tobe like in San Jose.
I was like, man, it's only,it's 109 in Phoenix, it's not
that far off Like I thought itwas going to be in the 70s here,
(09:49):
like when I usually go to SanJose, like it's cool in San Jose
or San Francisco, it's cool inboth of those, which is, you
know, really weird.
Anyway, I was standing outthere in the heat because it's
already pretty high.
It wasn't 102 at that, that wasthe high, but it was probably
like close to 90 degrees at thattime of the morning, even
because it was so warm.
(10:09):
And so then I go in there at840 and they're like okay, you
can go ahead and scan, got mybadge and all that stuff, and
they give some nice swag.
I'll put some pictures too, because some people wanted to
see some of the swag.
I actually lost a piece of myswag in the shuffle of all the
crazy coverage.
I lost a really nice piece, which I'll talk about later.
They gave us stickers, a totebag that has a Samsung developer
(10:32):
conference logo on it.
Then there was keychainseverywhere.
I got five or six keychains.
Samsung loves keychains.
I guess they had a stationwhere you could make your own
keychain with.
I guess they had a stationwhere you could make your own
keychain with the SDC logos.
They had older ladies who arelike I guess it's their hobby
ironing on patches, like you dofor Girl Scout or Boy Scout
(10:54):
vests.
You have the patches you irononto the vest.
They had little patches withthe SDC logo and you could pick
the ones you want.
And there was two oldermiddle-aged whatever it is.
It was their hobby.
They were sitting there.
I guess they volunteered theyweren't.
Samsung employees must havebeen local and that you hand
them the patches and thekeychain, they would iron them
on in real time.
So I got that one.
There was a bead one, where youcould make your own with beads
(11:16):
and then they had like six, youknow like four other ones they
gave out at the various stations.
So I have, like I don't need tobuy a keychain for a long time.
I might even throw some in themystery boxes because I have a
couple of the duplicates, sothey gave us some swag.
I went up to the area upstairs, which is where the conference
actually was, and they hadbreakfast area and I was blown
away by the breakfast area.
(11:37):
It was befitting of abillion-dollar, almost
trillion-dollar company.
I was impressed the breakfastarea was legit.
Um, they had like I mean itwasn't like hot breakfast, but
they had everything you couldwant.
Like they got donuts of likeevery type.
I mean like if you want a donut, they had it like the guy
cruelers like tiger tails.
(11:58):
They got, you know, bear claws, claws.
Cream-filled donuts, chocolatecream-filled, strawberry
cream-filled, like jelly donut.
They got everything in donuts.
And then, not only that, theygot bagels.
They got like seven to tendifferent types of bagels.
They got like five differentkinds of croissants.
They've got all kinds of freshfruit.
They've got like a drink barwith 20 different kinds of drink
(12:20):
.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Oh, wow.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
They had entire
individual cartons of milk.
They were in cartons like youcould get your own carton of
milk.
Uh, it was like a large one too.
I don't know how much it wasbecause I didn't look at the
actual volume, but it was large.
Juice, apple juice, every sodayou could want.
They had pepsi and coke.
Like this was like it was legit.
And that that's not even theend of the food story I'll tell
you guys, there was.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
There was more food
throughout the day which.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
I did, yeah, I did
partake in in more of the food.
I usually I've been on a dietso I usually haven't been eating
garbage, but because I wascovering all the seven dollars
stuff, I probably ate too muchgarbage.
At the conference and they hadsuch amazing.
The food they catered wasimpressive, but the breakfast
was kind of the start of that.
So then I walk over and Isitting like in the meeting area
they have like a place whereyou can do some work.
(13:06):
So I'm like sending some tweets, interacting with some
followers who want to, you know, and also just kind of engaging
with people, showing some of thepictures I had already taken.
I don't think I took a pictureof the breakfast, cause I was at
that time I was thinking aboutthe conference and other stuff,
but I wish I had in retrospectgotten a picture of that.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Yeah, I would have
loved to have seen that.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
I sat down on that
side and then right in front of
me is the lady I forgot her lastname.
I feel bad, but Sally is hername, that's what she goes by.
She is like the head of One UIdesign and she's sitting there
with a stack of papers and acomputer, talking to a colleague
.
So I sent a tweet and I'm likeI just saw Sally.
(13:47):
She has her one UI seven ohspeech prepared.
It looks really long, it lookslike we're in for a crazy day.
So that got a lot of reactions.
And then I was like no, I'mjust kidding, but she does it,
she did.
I'm like I did see her when shehas a stack of papers and so
that I I'm like all right, let'sgo inside.
I go inside because I assumesome people are like going to go
in the keynote.
They open the keynote at like 9, 15 or 9, 20, um, the keynote
(14:09):
room.
They wouldn't let anyone whowasn't a samsung employee in
before that.
But uh, they opened it up and Ifigured there'd be like a lot
of journalists like in the frontrow.
So I was like I want to get inthe front row too.
I'll try, and I go in therelike no one.
So I'm like, well, I can justgo and get the best seat.
So I asked the lady who was likethe staff is like in front of
the seating.
I'm like, can we go in Becausethere's no one here, like, is it
(14:30):
okay?
And she's like, yeah, go ahead, get whatever seat you want.
So I sit dead center front row, right right there.
Maybe they all think there'sgoing to be no 7.0 news today,
so that's fine.
So I wait.
The keynote starts.
Jh Hahn comes out.
He talks about the overallvision of the conference.
(14:52):
The name of the conference wasAI for All, so we already knew
it was going to be a lot aboutAI, which we talked about last
week, I think on the podcast orwhen you and I last chatted.
We expect that.
There's a lot of AI stuff, but Istill thought that meant that
we could have a lot of One UIstuff, because Galaxy AI is
obviously in One UI, so it wouldmake sense still to talk about
(15:12):
One UI Plus.
They've talked about One UIevery year at SDC since it
started.
Ten years ago is when theystarted this conference every
year.
So a couple people come out Ithink Sally's like third,
everyone's hyped.
I'm tweeting like sally's here,let's go.
Everyone on twitter is superhyped, getting excited about it,
and she's like.
She's like I bet you guys allknow what I'm here to talk about
(15:34):
and everybody in the audienceis like whoa, yeah.
And then she's like one ui 7.0is our next version of our
mobile os and it's coming inbeta form later this year, by
the end of 2024.
And everyone like the room likethe air just got taken out of
the room she's like, but I wantto share a few details with you
today, and she talked aboutthree main tenets that have the
(15:56):
new design.
One they're going to redesignthe home screen so that you can
make it easier to place iconsand how to customize your icon
grid.
Two, so that you can make iteasier to place icons and how to
customize your icon grid.
Two, they're going to changethe animations, make it more
fluid, that kind of stuff.
And three, they're going tomake it more emotive.
Samsung loves using words likethat to evoke emotion.
By that I think they're meaningchanging the blur and the way
(16:18):
the animations interact and go,how things pop in and out of the
screen, which is somethingGalaxy users have wanted for a
long time.
But then you know it doesn't.
But then you know, that wasgreat, that was like the
positive news.
She told us some of the thingsthat we were already expecting,
even though they weren't details, they were very vague, so
people were disappointed aboutthat.
But then she's like, yeah, thebeta later, this by the end of
(16:38):
the year, and the stable versionnot coming until the next
galaxy hardware early 2025, andthen everyone's just everyone on
twitter and x is mad becausethey're like, oh no we're not
even going to get the stableversion at all on the phones
from 2024 um before the nextrelease.
So basically, if you want oneui7 the earliest you can get it
(17:02):
you've got to buy galaxy s25.
There's no choice, becauseotherwise they're going to wait,
just like 6.1.1, they don'troll it out to the previous
earphones until after it'salready on the new ones.
So everyone's upset about thatand she's like, well, that's all
I have to share for you guys, have a great day.
So it's like three minutes.
I took some really nice photos, they're like, but I shared
(17:23):
those on x and I was like, yeah, here's some photos from the
three minutes.
I took some really nice photos, they're like, but I shared
those on x and I was like, yeah, here's some photos from the
three minutes of one ui sevenstuff, literally in the keynote
so then the rest of the time, you know they just have a bunch
more speakers and they're alltalking about stuff.
I'm listening because you knowI'm interested in other tech
stuff, but like a lot of it'sstuff that you know it's not
like super exciting.
Like one of the guys is outthere to talk about like how AI
(17:43):
can impact digital signage.
It's like digital signage, likeI mean, how many people care
about digital signage?
I mean digital signage.
I guess that's cool if you needto buy digital signage for your
business, but I already have awooden sign back here.
I don't need digital signage.
I like my wooden sign just finefor now, and we don't service
customers, so I don't needdigital signage.
And then he talked aboutappliances.
(18:04):
I listened to that a little bitbecause I do like the connected
refrigerators.
They talked a little bit abouttheir new technology with
SmartThings that will allowYouTube music to synchronize
with your smart lighting so thatyou can actually have your
lights change as your music goesoh, that would be really cool.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
I feel like people
would really like that Boom
chick boom, chick boom.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Everybody scream.
The lights will change.
They already have the abilityto do that with your TV, to
match the TV with the lighting.
They introduced that at CESActually, I was at that press
conference a few years ago andso now they have the smart
lighting syncing with your audiotoo.
It only works with YouTubemusic, not with Spotify or
anything else.
Yet that's because they have astrong partnership with Google,
(18:42):
and so I actually stopped bythat station, which I'll talk
about in a second.
That was actually so.
All these people came out.
I listened briefly, I took afew more pictures, but really
nothing else about mobile.
A few other things about smartthings, a couple other things
about Galaxy AI.
They did say that they're nowrenaming all of their operating
systems to One UI, so, like theoperating system on, everything
(19:03):
will be called that.
It's only been for mobile inthe past, but now refrigerators,
washing machines everythingwill run one UI.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Do they give a reason
for that?
Speaker 1 (19:14):
I think it's just
yeah, they're basically saying
to make it more uniform to havemore brand identity.
So people know if they hear oneUI.
It's like that's Samsung.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah, they wanted to
create some brand I like that,
yeah, that's a good move.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Yeah, and then they
talked a lot about privacy, of
ai and stuff, which is allimportant, but unfortunately, as
a site that covers likeconsumer tech mainly and that's
how we get our clicks and ourhits in the interest, does it
not like this exciting storiesto write.
Now, if we had a full team, people ask me, like, why don't
you write some of those smallerstories?
Well, it's obvious.
I think about it from abusiness perspective.
I got a very small team rightnow.
(19:49):
It's me and Sumit.
Basically we have a couple ofpart-time writers.
Tori contributed a review.
He does other stuff for thesite, but we have a small team
right now in terms of thecontent team on Sammy Guru and,
of course, I make all the videocontent.
So if you have a small team, you can't cover all those small
stories because you're takingaway the chance of covering
stuff that has higher value.
It's not about the fact that Idon't want to cover everything.
(20:10):
Obviously, android, authority, sam mobile they can cover
everything because they got like15 to 20 writers that are
writing content.
If I had 20 writers, I wouldcover every single text story
that had the word samsung in it,because I just, I just like
each of you write five articles,or write a hundred articles a
day if necessary, if there'sthat much stuff to cover.
And then you know, someone cando long form, but I mean we
(20:33):
don't.
We didn't have that many people.
So we have to cover what's likereally near and dear to
people's hearts in terms of whatpeople are interested in, and
our audience is mainly mobile.
So me it's been covering someTV stuff too, and I like TVs and
I like smart home.
So we will try to cover that.
As we expand our writer base, you know we will cover more
stuff.
It's not like I'm not going tocover other Samsung products,
(20:53):
but these are the things thatget the most interest.
So the keynote ends and it'slike 1120.
It's about an hour and 20minutes, cause it started at 10
AM.
It at 10 am.
It's like okay, what am I goingto do now?
So I look at the schedule.
There's a lot of cool stuff todo.
So I was like I was going to goback to the hotel, but I'm like
no, I flew all the way here, Ispent a lot of money.
I'm not going to go back to thehotel and work, because I could
do that in Phoenix.
I might as well stay.
(21:25):
They had some cool stuff whereyou could win prizes.
They had all these stationsthat had numbers and if you
visit each station, there was asamsung employee who had a qr
code around their neck and ifyou visited the station and
actually partook in the station, you could scan the qr code and
get some points and then, if youget a certain number of points,
you can go and trade it in atthe giveaway station.
There was a giveaway desk andyou could collect one of three
prizes.
You you could get a keychain, but they were already giving
(21:45):
away a bunch of keychains forfree Another keychain.
It was a little nicer keychain, but I was like I don't want that
because I'm already getting it.
I already saw that they gave mea bunch in the original swag
bag.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
And is there another
keychain?
Speaker 1 (21:56):
No, no, the next one
you could get was a water bottle
, a tumbler like one of thoseinsulated ones.
I was like I'll take that.
That's the one I was going toget.
That was the middle one is 1500points.
And then the last one was acharging pad with the SDC logo.
I was like I got 15,000charging pads.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
I was like I.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
The SDC logo on it is
cool but like, what am I going
to do with it?
I already have so many.
I was like I might even usethat, so I'll get that.
So I went around, did a lot ofthe bingo stuff.
(22:31):
I saw some cool stations, including the one with smart
things and the music syncbetween the YouTube music, like
I told you about.
I talked to the Samsungemployees about the stuff, tried
to learn some stuff.
We'll probably write a storyabout that too, because I
thought it was kind ofinteresting how they integrated
that with YouTube music and someof those things.
I stopped by the androidautomotive station.
Um, they actually had an audiand you know I have an audi.
So yeah, they had an audi inthere like actual car on the
(22:52):
convention center floor.
And that's because samsung ispartnering with harman kardon,
which does the a lot of theaudio for audi and other car
brands, to make a third-partyapp store for android automotive
.
And I actually learnedsomething because I didn't know
the 2025 audis run androidautomotive.
You might not know this story, you probably know about android
(23:13):
auto.
Yeah, that's what it lets youmirror your phone, but android
automotive is actually means thecomputer on your car is now
running android, so you nolonger need to mirror your phone
.
As soon as you pair it viabluetooth, all of your contacts
and stuff will sync and youbasically have a full version of
android on your car.
So when I found this out, I waslike told the guy like hey,
(23:33):
well, man, that's terriblebecause I spent a lot of money
to come here, not to spend moremoney because I want to upgrade
my car to the 2025 model right,I was like you guys are making
me waste even more money here, because I really want Android
Automotive.
I want it since I saw it.
I actually saw AndroidAutomotive a long time ago when
it first was announced by Google, because I went to Google IO
another conference in 2018.
(23:53):
And that's when they firstshowed it off in a Volvo and I
was like man, when that comes toa car that I like I'm going to
get that.
It took seven years and I waslike man.
I wish you wouldn't have toldme that.
I was like now I'm going tolose more money because I really
want it.
I was like I'm not going totrade in my current Audi Q8 for
a while, but I was like maybe ifthey give me a good enough deal
, I would, because I mean, android on the road is cool.
(24:15):
You can run full Android appslike Outlook, you can run
YouTube, you can run GooglePhotos all on your car display.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
See, that would be
really nice, and I think that's
what consumers want.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Yeah, that would be
cool.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
So I saw that that's
really what they want.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
I saw that and so I
did a few of the bingo things
and then I went and got my bingoprize.
I went and got the Tumblrtraded in my 1,500 points.
I got it.
It was in a little box, and sothen I went.
Once I got my Tumblr, I went andgot some lunch down the road at
(24:47):
a deli because Samsung hadcatered some stuff and it was
really good.
So I told you the food was good.
They had good food.
It just wasn't stuff that Iparticularly like because you
know they have limited options.
They had a banh mi sandwich.
It looks great, but I'm not ahuge banh mi fan, yeah.
And then they had chickenCaesar wrap and I just don't
like caesar dressing, so theydidn't have any other options.
They look really good.
They were obviously gourmet.
(25:07):
People look like they werereally enjoying them, uh, and
they had other stuff with it too, like they had gourmet chips
and some cookies in there too,and they had the same drink bar
they had for breakfast.
It looked great, but I was likeI don't want that.
So I went and got a sandwich.
I got a blt at the thing so thenI, there were some students
that were there at San JoseState from San Jose State at the
(25:30):
conference, I guess Samsunginvited some students, and so I
was looking on X and, of course, because I always post about
Samsung stuff, x alwaysrecommends Samsung posts for me,
and one of the students I guessI'm assuming it's one of the
students that was there becausethey didn't know what it was
tweeted a photo out and I wasjust searching for like Samsung
stuff.
I was trying to see if anyonehad found anything interesting
(25:51):
at the conference, because I waslike, should I go back?
What should I do?
Someone tweeted out a photo andthey're like look at this, look
at these quick settings, lookat these settings, or look at
the design, and I was like thatdoes look different.
And so then I looked at theirphoto.
(26:11):
They weren't media, though.
They had no idea like what thiscould be, and so then, I was
only halfway done with mysandwich, I took the rest of it,
threw it away.
I was like I got to get backthere and find this.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Well, yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
Before some other
like media outlet or other
publication or YouTuber who'sthere finds it and writes it all
up.
So I was looking at theirpicture, like looking for the
clues of where they took thisphoto Like they took a pretty
poor quality photo.
(26:41):
And so I walked all around andI noticed that in the photo it
had the side of a laptop in it,and so I had seen earlier,
before I went to get my food, that the coding lab and that's
actually one of the things I wasthinking about doing later was
going to the coding lab andchecking that out.
Basically, they had littlecoding labs where a Samsung
employee would walk you throughhow to do some basic coding
tasks, because this is adeveloper conference, right,
these are guys who like to code, they want to learn how to use
(27:01):
the new tools.
That's the whole point of theconference.
And so I looked around andthere's like 13 different coding
lab stations and so each ofthem had four phones they were
all S24 Ultras and stations, andso each of them had four phones
.
They were all S24 Ultras and sothat means there's like 50 or
something S24 Ultras.
So I looked around a bunch ofthem and I did a couple of the
labs and I didn't see this phonethat had I assumed was One.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
UI 7.0.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
I just knew it had to
be, and so I did a couple of
them.
And then the third one Ihappened to do I came upon was
SmartThings Coding Lab, numbertwo, station number two.
It was code a application thatwill place a 3D render of a
piece of furniture inside yourSmartThings home so you can see
how that furniture looks inrelation to the other stuff in
(27:46):
your house.
I sat down and I asked the guy.
I'm like, yeah, can I do this?
He's like yeah, he's walking methrough it.
And I look at the phone andboom, it's got the battery icon
from One UI, 7.0.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
And I was like
jackpot.
I was like jackpot.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
we found it.
So this is the phone that theyobviously took the pictures of.
So once I started doing thedemo, I'm there pretending to be
a complete moron, like I'venever done any like command line
code in my life.
And of course, tori, you knowI've done plenty of programming.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Like I'm not a
complete idiot.
It kind of sounds like linearalgebra.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Yeah, I mean I taught
MATLAB, I took C++.
I mean I did a PhD program inapplied math.
I've done a lot of programming.
I'm not a mobile app developeror a web developer, but I've
done a lot of object-orientedprogramming.
I know how to use command line.
So I'm there pretending to be acomplete moron that I can't
figure out Because basicallythey had it so that anybody
could do it, even if you're nota developer, I assume, because
(28:44):
they had students and mediathere.
They wanted to make it not tootechnical, so you just had to
copy and paste code.
But I keep taking a break.
There's like 10 steps and someof them are really easy.
I keep taking a break betweeneach one to open the phone up
and go out of the SmartThingsapp and take pictures of, like,
the icons, the settings, thenotifications the camera UI,
everything that I could possiblythink of.
(29:04):
Yeah, and while the guy is likelooking he's like wondering what
I'm doing, and so I finallyfinish it and I go and I tweeted
out after I was walking I waswalking back to the
collaboration area where all thetables were to work on your
laptop.
I tweeted out.
I said I just used a phone withOne UI 7.0, smiley face and I
started getting tons ofimpressions on Twitter.
(29:25):
People were like Pixar didn'thappen.
You're lying blah, blah, blah, all that stuff, and so I sat
down, wrote up my first articleabout the quick settings and the
notification page because Iknew that would be probably the
biggest story, and then, unfortunately, I highly regret I
didn't watermark my first fewimages that I posted, including
a picture.
Someone asked me I think theone Sid, who's another guy who
(29:47):
does Samsung like software leaksand stuff on Twitter.
He asked me for pics.
He said pics or it didn'thappen and of course you know if
someone says that that's whatthey say.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
If someone says that
you have to deliver, you have to
post a pic, you have to deliver.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
Even though that was
stupid on my part, because I
shouldn't have done that.
I posted an un-watermarked picof the phone with way too much
of it showing around softwareinformation screen that shows it
was actually 7.0.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Yeah.
But you can see the laptop inthe station.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
So when I tweeted
that out, obviously the other
outlets who were there Sam,mobile and authority they then
were able to go and find itbased on my pick, because my
pick was a lot better than someof the original, the one that I
saw originally on Twitter, causethat wasn't someone who even
really knew.
I don't think what they werelooking at.
Yeah, so anyway, I alreadywrote it up, so we got a bunch
(30:34):
of traffic from that initially.
Then everyone's like blowing upasking for more and more and
more, and so I was like well, Idon't know.
One thing that crossed my mindwas sorry, here I've got to take
a drink because I'm basicallytalking.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
I'm talking the whole
time today.
Usually we'll have to backforth, but since it's story time
today with me, I gotta take alittle drink there, sorry.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
So I'm like, um,
sorry, he's gonna interject me
here this is kind of a differentformat of the podcast, which I
like because, it's a littledifferent.
These next two podcasts are kindof different format, which is
cool, um, so I was thinking like, should I write more of it up?
Because also samsung finallyhad agreed to review our website
, or their PR people topotentially maybe get us on the
(31:16):
future media list for likehardware events, and so I was
like, well, I don't necessarilywant to make them mad, and if
this wasn't supposed to be onthose phones and I, I basically
reveal this info, but but I'mlike also it's in public, like
anyone could have done this yeah, like these.
Anyone could have got thesephotos, not just me as media.
You just happened to beateveryone to it I didn't break an
(31:36):
embargo or anything.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
So I was like yeah, I
should write up more stuff.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
So I go back to the
station.
I noticed that at that stationthere's four of them at station
two.
So four phones had One UI 7.0.
Out of the 52 S24 Ultras thatwere in the coding lab.
All the other ones were running6.1.
So I don't know how this onestation ended up with 7.0.
I'm thinking because thisversion of the SmartThings app
(32:01):
maybe needed 7.0.
Maybe the new version ofSmartThings only runs on that
particular target.
I don't know.
But yeah, so I go back and theguy who was helping me, the
samsung employee, he's like, uh,he's like you're gonna, you're
back again.
I was like, yeah, I just reallylike this demo.
I was like, I was like I feellike I missed some of the steps,
like I'm trying to understand, like you know, for my particular
(32:25):
applications, that I'mdeveloping like how, how this?
Works.
I need to take a few notes andso he's like oh okay, no problem
, We'll give you a little time.
So this time I was able to gothrough and do more and take um
some, some more pictures of theicons, other stuff like that
camera UI.
So I go back, I read anotherarticle up and about the icons
(32:47):
post that nobody else has gottenan article up yet at all.
Um, at that point I go back um.
And also I forgot to mentionone of my ex-followers who's
following me for a long time.
He was at the conference too.
He works for, I think, thecalifornia department of
corrections, and they usesamsung as like an enterprise
thing.
So he goes to the conferenceevery year.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
He's a he's like a
mobile device enterprise manager
.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
That's his job.
I met up with him and so he was, like you know, there with me
walking around some of this time.
I forgot his name.
I remember Neil.
Neil is his name.
I don't remember his ex handle, but had fun hanging out with you
, by the way, neil.
So he's sitting back over therewith me and like the area where
you type with the laptopsitting down and we're
discussing it.
And then we saw the ice creambar and their ice cream bar was
(33:33):
insane.
So I told you the food wasinsane.
The midday ice cream bar wasprobably on par with the
breakfast or above.
They had a place where youcould create your own sundae.
They had hand scooped ice creamfirst of all.
This is not like this, wasn't?
like store this wasn't likestore-bought ice cream.
This was like cold stone orbetter you know level.
This is this was-bought icecream.
This was like Cold Stone orbetter level.
(33:53):
This was definitely handmadeice cream and they had two
stations one where you couldmake your own sundae and one
where you could make your ownice cream sandwich cookie.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
That's what I would
have picked the ice cream
sandwich cookie.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Yeah, and they did
not like you'd be like, oh,
maybe how many toppings did theyhave at the sundae station?
Like two or three.
They had like 50.
I'm not even kidding.
It was basically like the samenumber of toppings as Cold Stone
Like they had waffle conepieces gummy bears, sprinkles,
reese's Pieces, reese's PeanutButter Cups they had like
(34:27):
everything, like five differentkinds of nuts.
It was insane.
And then they had sauces toocaramel sauce, chocolate sauce,
strawberry sauce, everythingthat you could possibly want.
And for the cookies you're likeoh, they just got like sugar
and chocolate chip.
They got like 12 differentkinds of cookies.
There was like snickerdoodlesugar, chocolate chip, white
chocolate chip, macadamia andpeanut butter.
(34:48):
So I got some of the dessertbar, even though I shouldn't.
But I peanut butter.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
So I got some of the
dessert bar, even though I
shouldn't but I was like this istoo good, I can't pass this up.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
When am I going to be
able to, when am I going to be
able to enjoy the Samsungcatered dessert bar?
I was like I need to thinkabout what my next move is in
terms of covering stuff, cause Iwas like what else should I
cover?
Cause I still had knew I stillhadn't gotten everything that I
could, because basically I wastrying to make sure that you
know that the guys you knowweren't upset about me doing it
and I wasn't trying to make itobvious that I was just playing
(35:15):
with the phone and that I wasstill trying to pretend to do
the demo.
Plus there's other peoplewaiting to do the demo at
certain points, so you don'twant to take forever because
then people are going to getupset this is a developer
conference.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Yeah, probably more
attention.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
And this wasn't a One
UI 7 demo.
That's what some people on Xdidn't understand.
They're like why didn't you getmore content?
Blah, blah, this is not a oneui7 demo.
They don't.
I don't know if the employeeseven knew it was running 7.0 or
realized or what, but it was notintended for that.
It was for smart things, thefurniture like the furniture
render thing.
It was not for people to lookat the new os.
(35:47):
So this time neil went back withme and, uh, the same guy who
helped me was there again.
I'm back a third time and thesame guy who helped me was there
again.
I'm back a third time.
And the guy's like, oh, you'reback again.
I was like, oh, my friend wantsto do it this time.
And so Neil sits down and doesit.
And the guy's like, oh, you canwalk him through it because
you've done it a few times.
I'm like, yeah, I could do that.
And so Neil does it while I'mstill taking more pictures and
(36:08):
videos of the phone, gettingsome more information.
And then, finally, I asked theguy at the station.
I was like, man, I'll be honestwith you, I'm really interested
in the new UI on here.
I was like I cover SamsungMobile on my news outlet.
Do you guys care if I take somemore photos and maybe some
short videos so I can see theanimations?
And so the guy says, oh, Idon't care.
(36:29):
She's like you should haveasked me in the beginning.
He's like I would let you justplay with the phone.
He's like I don't care.
And so I started taking somevideo, getting the animations
and all that stuff.
And that's when I then gotenough to make a YouTube video
which I made later in the day.
That's where I got the coupleof hands-on clips.
But I was still trying to bevery respectful because there
(36:49):
were other people trying to dothe demo.
So even the guy told me I couldsit there and do it.
I wasn't going to take like 25,30 minutes because it's a
crowded conference.
People want to do stuff.
They don't care that I'm tryingto cover One UI 7.0 and get
some views and clicks and allthat stuff.
And also this time when I went Isaw the guy from Sam Mobile.
I know I think it's Adnan fromSam Mobile.
(37:10):
He was sitting on the othercomputer at the station across
from me.
He was doing the same thing.
So he finally he had found ithe had found the phone from my
picture and he was doing hisvideos his hands-on as well.
So I was like I've got limitedtime.
So at that point I was likeit's time to make our exit.
But then neil was like, hey,the giveaways are going to
happen, the big giveaways, andwe've got some raffle tickets.
(37:32):
I had like 10 raffle ticketsbecause on my way back from
lunch, some students who areleaving I guess they had to
leave for the day or somethinggo back to class, I don't know
what they were, from san josestate.
They're like we're not gonna beable to stay for the raffle
drawings.
Do you want these?
And I was like, well, yeah, sure, I'll take them.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Yeah, I didn't know
if I was staying, but I that
time it was 4 pm.
Better to take them than not, just in case.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
Yeah, it was 4 pm,
and so we went over there and we
sat down.
They gave away some good stuff.
I mean, I wouldn't have stayedif it was like another keychain
because I already had six, so Ididn't need any more.
But they gave away a Z Fold 6,z Flip 6.
They gave away a 49-inch gamingmonitor, another 49 inch ultra
(38:13):
wide galaxy bud, three pro, twogalaxy watch ultras and two
galaxy rings.
And so me and Neil had I don'tknow how many tickets we had
between us.
We both sat there, we think.
So I stayed for 15 minutes forthe drawing, watch everybody
else collect their prizes and goscreaming to the stage and get
their stuff.
What I don't understand too, isthey handed the people their
(38:33):
prizes and so, like two thingsthe person who won the monitor,
they had to carry it off thestage, I'm assuming for tax
reasons, so they don't have togive them a tax form or et
cetera, and so they couldprobably say the value is less
than the 1199.
So they have to issue a taxform.
But then also the people whowon the galaxy rings they just
to issue a tax form.
But then also the people whoown the Galaxy rings they just
(38:54):
handed them a box.
How did they know it was goingto fit them?
Yeah, right.
Are they going to exchange itLike what if they gave you a
size 9 and you need a size 12?
What if they give you a size 12and you need a size 9?
Like I don't understand aboutthat I don't get that Like the
phone and you, are you going totake the 49-inch monitor home?
Like, if I'd won the monitor, Idon't know what I would have
(39:16):
done with it because I can'ttake it back on the plane.
I don't know what I'm going todo.
I mean, I would love to have it, but I would have taken it.
That would have get out of here.
I got to go back and make avideo.
I was really torn because therewas a coding at.
(39:38):
There was like an after partyfor the show starting at 530.
And I knew I could probably goback and get more content from
the phone.
There's a couple of things Istill haven't done that I wanted
to do and I'll talk about someof my regrets in a few minutes.
Um, that I should have done butI didn't.
Um, but I was like I got to goback and make a video because
someone else is going to postthis on youtube.
(39:59):
Uh, who competes with me, likesake tech or someone like?
that and I know hotel wi-fi slowso I went back.
Luckily I was staying at thehilton.
They have pretty good wi-fi.
I paid an extra 20 to bump itto the premium Wi-Fi so I was
able to shoot a video, upload itand post a video of all my
hands on by last night I think,at like 7 pm California time.
(40:20):
So it took me three hours toget everything shot, edited,
uploaded, processed andeverything.
And so, yeah, that video didreally well.
Of course it got a lot ofsupport.
But then everybody else gottheir videos up too and
unfortunately I I do have someregrets about the way everything
kind of shaked out, because youknow, at the end of the day I
should have done a few things.
(40:40):
So what did?
What did I actually cover?
A lot of you listening to thepodcast probably already know
because you're probablyfollowing along on on x.
I basically leaked all of thenew icon designs, which are some
people had suggested and showndesigns you know renders of
before those.
Those are all confirmed.
There's a new gallery iconthat's very polarizing.
It's like a rainbow color.
It looks like the Apple iOS one.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Oh, I like that.
Remember when we talked aboutthat.
I like that.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
Yeah, we talked about
that a long time ago, like the
beginning of the podcast, backin like June or July, about how
that was rumored, we confirmedthat New notification and quick
settings.
So now when you pull down thenotification shade you don't get
quick settings andnotifications together you
actually have to get separatepages, like on ios, so these
will be on the right andnotifications on the left so if
(41:24):
you swipe on the right you'llget quick settings and on the
left you get notifications.
They're also more rounded thanbefore.
The camera UI has changed, sonow the buttons and stuff the
toggles are at the bottom tomake it more easy to use one
handed, which we talked aboutbefore as well.
That was confirmed.
Um, they changed the phone appa little bit.
There's some new icons there.
(41:45):
They changed the power menu.
Um, there's a new feature calledgalaxy avatar, which is, I
think, just a renaming of ARemoji.
Um, I'm not sure it's anentirely new feature.
Ar emoji has existed for awhile.
Sam mobile wrote up an articleabout this once.
Obviously, like I said, thatguy I had notnan, I think this
is his name.
(42:05):
Um, he was over there checkingout the phone once he realized
where it was.
Um, obviously he wrote up apiece about that being exclusive
feature.
I'm not sure it's anythingreally that new, though, because
I looked at it and I was goingto make a piece about it too,
but then I was like I think thisis just an ar emoji rebrand.
Probably should have wrotesomething about that somewhat
regret that.
Um, yeah, I mean, that's themajority of stuff.
(42:27):
Oh, the new quick settingstiles.
They're customizable, just likeon iOS.
You can drag them around andchange.
You know what the size of themlike the size of the tiles, you
can move them around inside thequick settings so you can change
it to your liking.
Kind of different panels.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Yeah, I mean, people
are going to like that, people
like that it.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
People are going to
like that.
People like that.
It adds some nice customization.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
You have to get them
the customization.
Speaker 1 (42:46):
Yeah, so I wrote all
that stuff up.
We showed it off in the videos.
The animations look reallyfluid.
There's a lot of things thatare unfinished in this version.
It was clearly a very earlybuild.
Obviously, it's not even a beta, because they said the beta is
not coming until the end of 2024.
So you've got to understandpeople who are messaging me on X
.
They're like what about?
You know?
I thought it was going to besmoother than iOS.
(43:06):
What about the final blurs ofyou know in and out of apps?
That stuff's not all done.
This is October.
If the beta's not even cominguntil December, like you can't
expect this to be anywhere nearfinal build.
This is obviously a developerbuild, test, build an internal
build.
There's stuff missing.
There's a media controller nowinside the quick settings as
well, which you can add in there.
(43:27):
That's actually why in my videothere's some dead space down
there.
Someone realized that.
Now my three biggest regrets.
One I went into the widgets andI was playing around.
Remember, when you're doingthis in real time, it's easy for
you to say, when you look at myvideo or you're on X, you're
like, oh, you should have didABC, why didn't you do it?
But if you're in the middle andyou're trying to write up four
(43:47):
articles, take hands-on video inthe middle of a really busy
conference and you're trying tomake sure you get the best stuff
you can.
It's not that easy.
It wasn't like this was acontrolled demo specifically for
One UI 7.0.
If I was on the Samsung medialist and they're like well, jeff
, we would like to invite you toour hotel suite or our
(44:08):
convention center private roomand let you see a cool tour of
One UI 7.
And then I missed some stuff, Iwould say, yeah, you guys
should say, jeff, you're a pieceof crap, you're garbage, you're
a terrible reporter.
If I had like hands-on time ina controlled environment, like I
had 30 dedicated minutes and Ihad time to prepare and I didn't
cover the right stuff, yeah, that's career criticism.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
But I didn't.
I didn't know it was going tobe there.
Speaker 1 (44:30):
I had limited time to
do it.
It wasn't ideal circumstances.
This certainly wasn't acontrolled hands-on, where I was
supposed to be dealing with 7.0.
And I didn't know ahead of time, so I missed a couple of key
things.
I didn't place a widget on thehome screen.
I did go into the widgets.
The widgets have like a newblur.
Look to them.
I didn't put them on the homescreen to see exactly how they
(44:51):
look.
I know a lot of people wantedto see that I didn't set a timer
or do any other live activitiesbecause, remember we talked
about Samsung might be bringingthe dynamic island to Samsung
phones where it's kind of like alive activity, it's going to
live in the notification bar.
I really should have set a timerto see if that happens, because
that would have been a hugestory.
(45:12):
I didn't do that, uh.
And then the other one isinside of the home settings.
I was comparing them to my s24ultra running one ui 6.1.1 and I
thought that the home settingslooked the same.
But I went back and watched myown video and I realized there's
a brand new option in therethat says widget and icon style.
And that is the really bigrumor that Ice Universe had,
(45:35):
where you would be able tochange the size of the icons and
the style of the widgetsdirectly from inside of there
and that those icons would alsochange with dark mode being
turned on or off that would bereally nice I did a lot of
people keep dark mode on I lovedark and they want to be able to
, you know obviously I say darkmode all the things.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
You know perhaps dark
mode all the things oh yeah,
yeah, I've talked about all thethings.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Google all of it,
just all so I didn't try that
either, and so those are thethings that in retrospect I wish
that I had tried, because thoseall would have been big stories
.
But again, if you go and lookat all the things I did cover,
it's easy to focus on what Ididn't.
And I wish I would have, because no one else is probably
going to have a chance to use adevice running 7.0 again,
(46:21):
media-wise, until December.
So it is a pretty big regretbecause we might be two months
away from being able to playwith it again and I wish I had
gotten a little more info.
But given the time constraints,I wrote four articles on my own
.
I didn't have a team in SanJose with me.
Sumit is my team, but alsowhile all this stuff was going
on, sumit is sleeping becauseall this started happening
(46:43):
around 1.30 in the morning,India time.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
Yeah so.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
Sumit.
All this started happeningaround 1 30 in the morning india
time.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
Yeah, so samit is
passed out like he can't help me
with anything.
Speaker 1 (46:51):
So I can't like I
can't feed articles like ideas
to him and pictures to be likesamit, you write it up.
I'm having to write thesearticles in between doing
hands-on stuff so I could getout content and then go back and
make a video.
Not an easy thing to do at all,but I had a lot of fun doing it
.
The main overall regrets like Isaid a few things I didn't get
(47:11):
to check on.
Wish I had done that, wish I hadmaybe cropped my photos a
little better in the beginningso that we had a little more of
a head start, or that I hadwrote more content and released
it all at once before you know, the bigger outlets found it, and
also some bigger YouTubers, ofcourse it all at once before you
know, the bigger outlets foundit, and also some bigger
youtubers, of course, sake tech.
He took the hands-ons and thenmade his own video, which is now
outperforming my video, whichmakes me really angry because he
(47:34):
wasn't even at the event.
He didn't really discoveranything.
He just has 1.4 million subsand so then, not angry at sake
tech, keep in mind and sake tech.
We're cool angry at the youtubealgorithm for the garbage that
they allow to happen.
I mean, obviously I broke allthis information originally on X
and on our website.
You would think that the videothat originally broke it would
get a little more weight, butapparently no.
(47:55):
So if you have more subs like,oh well, he's just showing a
hands-on video that he tooksomewhere else and that other
guy posted a video, but we don'tcare, just give it to the guy
who has more stuff.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
So no shade to
SakiTech.
If I were him I'd just we wouldget there, jeff, yeah.
Speaker 1 (48:08):
I would do the same
thing.
Oh yeah, I mean I gave peoplethe opportunity as well to go
over and use the phone and getother hands-on footage, so I put
it out there.
But I wish I had maybewatermarked my early images
faster and I wish I had alsoheld back a little bit until I
had more content because, honestly, a lot of the other
media people seem to have beengone.
(48:29):
I don't know that they wouldhave found this necessarily.
Maybe they would have I mean,I'm not saying that 100 I, you
know, if I didn't break it, noone would have.
Yeah, but there were pictureson x that some other people have
shared.
Like I said, I think it was astudent maybe who was there who
didn't fully know what it was, yeah, and then it got reshared.
So they might have saw that, maybe, and they would have found
it anyway.
But certainly the fact that Ishared it made people find it
(48:50):
faster because I have a lot morereach and also a lot more
people in the Samsung communityknow who I am.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
So they were paying a
little more attention?
Speaker 1 (48:59):
Yeah, they were
paying a little more attention
when I tweeted it out versusthose other photos that I had
saw at lunch.
Never got to finish my luncheither, which was unfortunate.
I was hungry.
I went back and I even thoughI'm on a diet I ordered
Smashburger and DoorDash.
While I made my video I wasvery tired, as you should.
I helped Sumit get picturesthat I had taken to write about
(49:22):
10 more articles on some smallchanges, some of those other
things that I told you guys thatwe found, like I said, small
changes.
Some of those other things thatI told you guys that we found,
um, like I said, very smooth.
A lot of people want to know myoverall impressions.
I was very impressed with it.
It's much.
The animations are nice.
People are saying, oh well, they don't look like they have
ios quality blur and left toright movements.
It's not finished and also it'searly developer build that was
running on a dev demo device ata developer conference.
(49:45):
You can't expect it to beperfect.
No, it doesn't look like iOS.
Smooth level of smoothness, yes, but the transitions and the
way that they play with oneanother, which so many people
are interested in, is not quitelike iOS yet.
But, it is a very niceexperience.
I thought the software was verypolished, considering it's not
(50:05):
even in beta form.
Some people asked some otherquestions which I will address
because I didn't get a chance totest some of these things
Someone asked about.
Are there new notificationsounds or chimes?
I didn't test that because Ididn't want to really be like
playing loud sounds in thedeveloper area and try not to
disturb other people.
I was trying to be at leastreasonably respectful, even
(50:26):
though I was trying to get somecoverage for the site.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
I'm not a douchebag
Try not to be a douchebag.
Speaker 1 (50:31):
Maybe other media, I
don't know, wouldn't care, but I
didn't do that.
Someone asked about batterylife.
How the heck am I supposed toknow battery life?
It was plugged in on the table.
I didn't use it, so I don'tknow.
Once people asked about that, Iwas puzzled.
I was like table, like I didn'tuse it, so I don't know.
Once you asked about that, likeI was puzzled I was like how?
am I supposed to know what?
Yeah, no right.
How can I test the battery life?
It wasn't even off the charger.
(50:52):
It was plugged into a demotable and I didn't.
I didn't.
I have no idea what the batterylife is like.
Um, the battery menu doesn'tseem to be much changed from
before.
A lot of the other things arenot that far changed.
The settings menu is redesigned, but a lot of the internal
settings in each of the menusare almost the same as they were
before.
There's not like a crazy amountof changes, so there's still
(51:14):
some stuff that looks similar toone ui 6.1.1 one thing we was
kind of figuring yeah, becauseit's an early build, right.
Yeah, they did make one reallycool change which I put in my
video.
I made a second video thismorning.
I woke up at 6 am this morningin california and made another
video before I got on my flight.
Um, I found a really coolchange in my video that I had
missed originally.
The galaxy ai menu isredesigned and now all the
(51:38):
galaxy I functions arecompletely tied to the apps that
they're used in.
So instead of saying noteassist, inside galaxy Eye it
says Samsung Notes, so you knowwhere you can use it and instead
of saying it has the iconcorresponding to that.
So instead of saying BrowserAssist, it says Samsung Internet
(51:58):
, because basically the reasonthey did that too is that some
people think, oh, I could use itin Chrome.
Well, no, browser Assistdoesn't work in Chrome because
it's a Galaxy Eye feature.
It only works in the Samsungbrowser.
So, that's probably why I havescreenshots of that too.
I'm trying to watermark all ofour images and I'll put them in
a folder.
A lot of people have beeninterested in asking me to share
things.
For everybody who supported andwas respectful and asked good
(52:20):
questions, I appreciate it.
For the people who are justlike post more, post more pics
of One UI 7.
Speaker 2 (52:26):
That's not how that
works.
I don't like that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (52:29):
No, not how that
works.
I'm not a machine, I'm not adog Like if you want something
and you ask, nicely, if I haveinformation about it, I'll try
to get it, but not if you'rejust like do this, that's not
how it works here.
No, not here.
Not sure what else I can sayabout One UI 7.
I'm trying to think of any ofthe other things from the
(52:51):
stories.
I mean, I wrote five articles,I made two videos.
Now we're recording a podcaston it.
Tomorrow I have the newsletter, which will have everything
compiled from everything that Ilearned.
I definitely did not wastemoney.
We definitely made money andimplied value it turned out to
be a pretty good businessbusiness trip.
(53:11):
I thought during the keynotethat I wasted money.
I thought I was just going tobe kind of a chill day.
My day took a 360 like really,or 180 really quickly.
I was like I'm just going torelax, do nothing and maybe get
a few prizes, and it just kindof took a 180 and I had to go
and do crazy work.
I was super tired, which was agood thing.
Oh, and I did lose.
(53:32):
Remember my Tumblr?
I got for free, yeah.
I lost that because when I wasat the deli eating and I saw the
photos and I picked my stuff upand ran back to the convention
center.
I left the Tumblr at therestaurant and when I tried to
call and get it they didn't haveit.
I bet, yeah, Someone took it.
(53:52):
Oh yeah, no, it wouldn't havebeen that large Someone someone
pilfered my, so if anybody hasone of those tumblers from SDC,
I'll buy it from you for a fewbucks.
I wanted it, but uh you know thecoverage I got was probably
more valuable.
Speaker 2 (54:04):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (54:05):
But yeah, I mean, I
basically took my second half of
my sandwich, just threw it awayquickly, refilled my drink,
grabbed my backpack and mywallet and my phone and jetted.
I left the box that had myTumblr.
It said SDC24.
Someone probably came by in thedeli and they were having their
sandwich like hmm, tumblr.
They're like finders, keepers,losers weepers.
Speaker 2 (54:25):
No seriously, the
whole Tumblr game is very big
these days.
You got Stanley dominating, soand Imitator so definitely at an
event like that, they'reprobably going to sell.
If you laid it around, it'sgone.
Speaker 1 (54:39):
They're going to sell
my SDC Tumblr on eBay.
Yeah, I'll probably be able togo on there and buy my Tumblr
back.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Yeah, I know, buy
your Tumb.
I'll probably be able to go onthere and buy my Tumblr bag for
$100, though Not a coupledollars.
Yeah, no, no, no.
Speaker 1 (54:48):
It's going to be $100
.
It's going to be like exclusiveSamsung Developer Conference
Tumblr Only $100 plus $10shipping.
I'll be like dang, I could havehad that for free.
I got it for just doing sometasks, but yeah, I mean I saw a
lot of other cool stuff aroundthe conference.
There's a couple pieces of swagthat I didn't have time to get
because I started doing the 7.0coverage.
They had a couple other totebags.
(55:08):
They had a SmartThings one, aSamsung Health.
They did have one otherkeychain, which is actually one
of my favorites, but I alreadyhad six, so I didn't care.
I wanted it.
Speaker 2 (55:16):
No, you should have
got it the.
Speaker 1 (55:17):
Samsung Health one.
I think they ran out by thetime I got sleep animals.
You know the sleep ring.
It shows you your sleep animal.
They had the lion and the sealon the keychain, so it had the
those animals on the keychain.
I thought jonathan would likethat too.
Yeah, no, you, definitely, youprobably really would, yeah, so
I did get jonathan and nathanielsome souvenirs, though, while I
(55:38):
was there I got jonathan somedino flash cards that have 3d
effects on them oh, he's gonnalove that, yeah, and then, then
I got.
Nathaniel a book and a stuffedanimal.
It's a stuffed octopus.
Jonathan has one of thosealready from Mandalay Bay.
Anyway, I don't know Anyquestions for you about the SDC
trip.
Speaker 2 (55:57):
No, I mean it seemed
like a fun trip.
I know you covered all of themobile stuff, but from doing the
entries I do see the appliancesand stuff.
You know you really did kind ofgrab my interest with the
fridge, like I think I've seenlike maybe a commercial or a
demo video of it before, butlike that's a really cool thing.
(56:21):
And I feel like Samsung.
Even though, like I only reallyview Samsung as being
innovative in the phones, I feellike they're also innovative in
their appliances.
Speaker 1 (56:31):
They are.
Yeah, I think they don't focuson smart things enough.
This conference was a lot aboutsmart things.
It seems like they're trying topush to do that more.
All their appliances integratewith mobile and thehings
framework.
Speaker 2 (56:43):
Is that so Because,
with our mutual friend Jonah, he
had the washer, the fridge, theoven, the dishwasher.
Would those apps be through theSmartThings?
Yeah, all of the.
Speaker 1 (57:00):
Samsung appliances
are connected through
SmartThings.
That's like their smart homenetwork that connects everything
and yeah, you can integratethem really well, like the, the
fridge particularly is reallycool.
I really would like to get oneof those fridges.
I probably will eventually.
Um, I don't know how muchcontent I can make on it,
because I know how much peoplewill care.
I mean, I care, I think it'scool yeah, I mean it has sensors
in there, like sensors thatweigh how much you have for each
(57:22):
object.
Um can tell you how many youhave of each fruit or something.
It's got little cameras andsensors that weigh things in the
fridge.
Now keep in mind, you do haveto put them in the same spots If
you're someone who puts yourmilk back in a different spot
every time then, it's not goingto necessarily work.
You've got to put them right inthe spots they're supposed to be
(57:42):
in in order for it to work.
I mean there's no other way, because otherwise, if you put
the orange juice where the milkgoes I mean technically, I guess
there's probably some ways theycould go around that, but I
think how it currently works, you need to put it in there.
Speaker 2 (57:53):
It also has a huge
screen on the front of the
fridge too.
Okay, yeah, it shows you yourcalendar.
Speaker 1 (57:58):
You can either watch
YouTube on it, and you know you
can make a phone call from theretoo because it pairs to your.
Galaxy phone.
So, like you know, I'd like toget it for Nicole too, because,
like, if she's making dinner orsomething, I'm making dinner too
.
Speaker 2 (58:10):
Guys can make dinner
too.
I just picture likeThanksgiving time a really busy.
You know whoever's in charge ofmaking Thanksgiving dinner,
like and having to.
You know, oh, hey, can you callso-and-so, Can you swing by
Walmart or whatever, because I'mshort on this.
Or even, hey, can you look inthe fridge.
Speaker 1 (58:30):
Exactly because you
can look in your app and figure
out if it's in there because ofthe camera.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Yeah, that would be
revolutionary, I think.
Speaker 1 (58:36):
Yeah, I mean, I'm not
saying I can't make
Thanksgiving dinner, you know mywife has to do it.
Speaker 2 (58:43):
It's the thing.
If she makes it, everyone willenjoy it.
Speaker 1 (58:47):
But if I make it, all
the people we invite will never
come back for Thanksgivingdinner.
I just let her handle it forthat reason.
Speaker 2 (58:54):
You're a good manager
.
I can make like seven things.
Speaker 1 (58:57):
But Thanksgiving
dinner is not really in my
wheelhouse.
I can make spaghetti.
I can actually make shrimpgumbo because I'm from Alabama,
of course.
I can make pepper steak likethe kind you get at PF Chang's.
I can make that pretty well.
Chili, I make chili.
I can make a couple differentother kinds of pasta too, like
fettuccine, alfredo, like shrimplinguine, that kind of stuff.
(59:20):
All stuff that's pretty simple.
Yeah, like you know, cookingand basting a turkey is a little
bit out of my wheelhouse, soit's tough.
You know, it's not easy to getthe right flavor in turkey.
It's tough.
I tried it one time, a small onelike a turkey breast, when I
was single back in the day.
It didn't go very well and Iended up going to Boston Market.
Speaker 2 (59:40):
Which are closing
everywhere in the valley.
Speaker 1 (59:44):
I don't know what's
going on with them.
I love Boston Market, you knowit's too bad?
Speaker 2 (59:47):
Yeah, me too.
But you know, I thinkThanksgiving turkey is probably
one of the most criticized likefood.
Yeah, you've got to get itright.
Speaker 1 (59:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you
can't phone it in on a
Thanksgiving turkey.
Speaker 2 (59:58):
Yeah, that's why it's
so important.
You know she doesn't, becauseshe doesn't want to eat my
turkey either.
Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
So you know, at the
end of the day she's not doing
it for me, she's doing forherself, because if I make it,
then she's got to eat it andpretend that she likes it
because I'm her husband.
But if she makes it, then it'sgoing to be good and everyone
will actually enjoy it.
No one has to pretend that theylike the food.
So I think that's a win foreverybody.
I think so too, and then seeit's all about reciprocity in
relationships.
When she gets a new phone or anew device and she doesn't want
(01:00:32):
to go through the arduousprocess of doing the setup,
she's like, hey, jeff, you dothat like 15 times a month, why
don't you just go ahead andtransfer all my contacts over,
set up all my apps and do allthat?
And I'm like sure, babe, I'lldo that for you.
Keep set up all my apps and doall that.
And I'm like sure, babe, I'lldo that for you.
Keep that in mind when you makethat delicious Thanksgiving
turkey for me all those devicesI set up for you.
Speaker 2 (01:00:51):
It's all about
reciprocity.
It is, it is, it is.
That is how the world goesaround Every tech device you get
.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
She doesn't want to
set it up because she doesn't
like that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
She's like you take
this one, the new one.
Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
Go ahead and move
them over.
She's like in the morning I'llhave a new phone and it will be
just like my old one in terms ofall my contacts.
I'm like, yeah, it will be,because that's what I do.
I do that all the time.
So, yeah, I mean overall, I hada great time going back next
year.
No, hopefully we don't get backblacklisted by Samsung for
posting this stuff, I mean theSamsung employee working at the
(01:01:30):
booth.
I didn't get his name, but helooked very important.
He told me that it was okay.
Actually, he probably wasn'tlike executive level, but hey
also I was thinking I mean, ifwe do get on the media list, hey
, I'm not going to say we are.
Hey, I'm not going to say weare, because I've been trying
for years and I mean, now wehave a website, maybe we have
some hope.
I've heard some positive.
You know, stuff is being made.
Speaker 2 (01:01:50):
Progress is being
made about.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
We might, but if we
do, I would really love to get
you know who I'd really like toget on the podcast.
Sally yes, I don't thinkanyone's ever interviewed her
and we cover one UI, like that'swhat we cover.
I wonder if she would do aninterview.
Speaker 2 (01:02:07):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
Obviously she speaks
very good English.
She always does the pressconferences and talks about One.
Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
UI.
Speaker 1 (01:02:13):
So it's not like she
only speaks Korean, whether or
not she'd be comfortable orwilling to do.
It is completely up to her, ofcourse.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
But that would be
like.
Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
That would be like
the dream guest for the map man,
because we could like interviewher about like what if we could
get her here for 7.0?
We could like interview herabout everything that went into,
like all of their designchoices.
That's what we need.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
That's the guess I
was thinking about that earlier.
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
Is that actually
going to happen?
Probably like 0.2%, 0.002%chance of that happening.
But hey, if they put me on themedia list, I'm going to reach
out about it and be like hey, here's an interview request for
you guys.
I'm on the list.
Now I have an interview requestand they're like oh, who do you
want to interview?
I'm like, oh, you know, justthe head of Mobile UX, that's
all that's all.
No, not a big request oranything.
(01:03:05):
Like if she, I'm super tiredbecause I've been flying and
traveling and Tori's super tiredbecause he's been grading.
Speaker 2 (01:03:12):
Yeah, grading.
Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
We're going to cut it
at one hour three minutes today
, Next week, Max Weinbach, thatone.
We already really did it, so Ican tell you it's good.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Yeah, it's really
good.
Go ahead, tori.
No, I that one.
We already really did it, so Ican tell you it's good.
Yeah, it's really good.
Oh, go ahead, tori.
Oh no, I just I, I thoroughlyenjoyed uh getting his knowledge
.
Uh, he had a very different umperspective and outlook.
Obviously, you know, I'm justlike a average consumer, but I
mean really, you guys should bevery excited for that podcast,
yeah, when it comes out.
Speaker 1 (01:03:44):
I enjoy it too, and
even a different perspective me,
even though I have a lot ofinsight in the tech community.
Max is interested in some ofthe areas that maybe I'm not as
into and also, since I only doSamsung mostly, he has a lot
more insight into some of theother manufacturers, and
particularly Apple, because Idon't spend as much time diving
into the Apple space.
So I think you guys will reallyenjoy that particular kind of
conversation.
We had a good time.
(01:04:05):
We learned a lot of stuff, sodefinitely check out that We'll
have more guests for sure.
Whether or not it will be Sallyor not, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
I can't promise that.
Speaker 1 (01:04:12):
But I can promise
there will be more guests
because I've talked to somepeople who are willing to come
on already and we'll line thoseup later this fall.
But hey, if we can get Sally, some other people may have to
get bumped because she getspreferential she gets
preferential time like if, ifshe wants to do it.
Like you know, I don't know ifshe's in in the us or korea full
