Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back
everybody.
This is episode number 13 ofthe Sammy Guru podcast.
My name is Jeff Springer andwith me, as always, my co-host,
tori.
Tori say hi, hey, how's itgoing?
And you guys can see overTori's shoulder.
Over here in the backgroundthey are watching the video.
Anyway, you can see the SammyGuru with Jeff Springer sign.
We promised a custom sign andthere it is.
If you guys follow me over on Xprobably saw it earlier this
(00:21):
week I posted it, uh, over there, so you guys get a little sneak
peek.
Uh, it's made of a complete, you know, solid wood made here
in the us and california.
I had a company named planksigns make it.
So just a shout out to them.
I think they did a really, really good job, honestly, on
the sign.
So if anybody needs a customsign, like for your business or
(00:42):
anything, I would highlyrecommend them.
I'm actually thinking about thisone's going to go in the
backdrop of the podcast.
We haven't mounted it yet, sothat's it's.
It's only been a couple daysand I've been busy covering
update stuff this week, butwe're going to get it mounted
next week.
I've thought about getting onefor the main youtube like studio
area too, to have it in some ofmy shots where, like, I'm
talking in front of the camera, maybe have one of them in the
(01:02):
background too.
So we'll see.
Really good job, though I wasimpressed with the quality.
You like the sign, tori, oh.
I love the sign I shared thatwith the Sammy Guru team, also
on Slack.
I think most people on the teamseem to like the sign overall,
so I think it's a pretty solidinvestment.
What have you been up to thisweek, tori?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
You know it has been
a very busy week at the high
school.
Grades were due this week, sothat's what I was really busy
trying to do before I got here.
But I did finish on time, stillgot a few more things to do
over the weekend but yeah, it'sbeen a pretty busy week, mostly
(01:40):
overall at the school.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Are these like
progress report grades?
Is that where it's coming from?
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, yeah, because
we do progress every three weeks
.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It's not the end of
the quarter, right?
Yeah, no, no, no, okay, no, no,no.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
So the next one is
going to be the report card.
Okay, yeah, yeah, this is justprogress.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
So yeah.
So I this morning I forgot tomention that this morning I went
Jonathan's first parent-teacherconference at his school, the
private school.
They do them like every fiveweeks for the younger kids to
check in on their progress.
So me and Nicole kind of metwith his teacher.
He got a great report.
So that's one of the reasonswhy we took him to the museum.
We told him if he had a greatreport from the teacher and he
(02:18):
did that we would take him.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
He loves to go to
Natural.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
History Museum in
Mesa because he obviously likes
dinosaurs and that's the placeto go if you're a dinosaur fan.
So that's what I was doing mostof today.
Took most of the day off to dothat.
Ran around the valley, made ahuge loop all the way from Mesa
back to my house in NorthernValley, back to the office in
the center of Phoenix and thendrive home a little bit after
the podcast.
But hey, this is what we dobecause we love you guys.
After the podcast but hey, thisis what we do because we love
(02:44):
you guys, that's why I'm here.
I made the drive back down here, oh yeah, for the love of the
game, that's why.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
But yeah, really
proud of Jonathan.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
So that's really
awesome that he's doing well
everything academically and alsokind of just getting used to
the routine of being in school, because a lot of younger kids
have a hard time sitting andstuff like that.
Since he was at home with us,he didn't go to preschool or
daycare or anything.
He's always been home with us.
We were, you know, want to makesure he settled in and it seems
like he is so really happyabout that.
Next week we're going to seeTransformers.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
We're taking Jonathan
.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Tori and I are taking
my son to see that new
Transformers one the animatedTransformers.
Even though it's animated, itlooks really good.
Honestly, I've seen thetrailers.
I think if you're aTransformers fan of the real
live-action movies, you probablywould like Transformers 1 as
well.
I've seen a lot of adultstalking about it who are fans of
Transformers, and it looks likesomething that should be a
(03:35):
pretty good movie for both kidsand adults.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
I think so.
That should be pretty fun.
We saw Beetlejuice last weekend.
Yeah, we did second one, but Iwon't do any spoilers in case
you haven't seen it.
It was pretty good thoughoverall yeah I thought some of
it could have been a littlefunnier.
It wasn't as funny, I think, asthe original movie maybe.
But I mean, you know it'salways hard to like.
You can't top a classic I meanthe second one I mean the only
one that I would say that everreally get got close.
(04:00):
For me is like back to thefuture too I thought it's
actually better than back futureone.
Honestly, that was one of thefew sequels that I ever saw
where I was like.
That is definitively better, inmy opinion anyway, than the
first one.
The first one's still good, butusually, like with the sequel,
you don't expect it to be waybetter, but it was really good
for sure.
I encourage you like, if youlike the original beetlejuice,
you should see it.
I mean, there's a lot ofcallbacks to the original movie
(04:23):
and I think also the plot is alittle similar to the original
one, but there's some Eastereggs throughout the plot and a
few surprises.
So I would say if you likecomedy, slash, horror genre and
you like the first one, thenit's probably a good idea to go
check it out.
So let's go ahead and jump intothe news.
It was an eventful week and, ofof course, the elephant in the
(04:44):
room, the second half of theshow.
Today, after we talk about allthe samsung stuff, because this
is a samsung podcast we aregoing to talk about the iphone
16 event a little bit, becauseyou know they are the main
competition here for samsung inthe us and I think, even though
I don't want to become an applewebsite in any sense ever I
never will.
That's a promise we should stopby about the competition,
(05:06):
because I think it's fair totalk about the competition.
A lot of other Android sites outthere which I really hate, you
know, in the last few yearsthey've started like covering
Apple stuff too, just becausethey want to get clicks.
We won't ever do that.
I promise you that I'll quitdoing this before I start, just
like putting up Apple content.
This is Sammy Guru.
You doing this before I start?
Just like putting up Applecontent.
(05:26):
This is Sammy Guru.
You'll see comparisons.
You might see some critiques ofApple and how they compare to
Samsung in terms of competitionand what maybe Samsung could
learn.
But you're not going to see mecovering like get your Apple
iPhone here, click on my link tobuy your iPhone or buy your
Apple cases from Sammy Guru.
We're not doing that.
I mean, other people got tomake their money.
I get it, but that's not mymonetization strategy.
I do a lot of things to makemoney to keep the website alive,
(05:49):
but that's not one of them.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
So just that's a
promise.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
So, going through the
news here that I put together
from the stuff we covered on thewebsite this week, we've got
the Galaxy S25 here.
Sorry, I had to go away to kindof click on this Galaxy S25
first.
Leaks are here, so these aretheir official renders and I
wrote this story up.
This is another exclusivebetween Android Headlines and
OnLeaks.
We saw last week they had anexclusive on the Galaxy Z Fold
(06:21):
Special Edition.
They're paying out a lot ofmoney to Onleaks for these
exclusive renders and I guess Igot to get on like paying people
some money to get someexclusives.
Like I said last week.
I guess, so, but take a lookhere at the render story.
This is the base model of theGalaxy S25.
So we're not talking about theUltra, and in fact they did get
an exclusive on the Ultra too,and we'll look at that.
We'll look at that, but there'snot really any surprises there
(06:43):
that we don't already know about.
In terms of the Ultra, it lookspretty much like what Ice
Universe said.
There's a few variations whichwe can talk about, but I mean
this one looks kind of just likethe Galaxy S24, except if you
notice here on the back thesecamera rings, they look like the
camera rings on the Galaxy ZFold 6.
So like they've taken theGalaxy Z Fold six camera ring
(07:06):
design and copy pasted it over.
Uh, I don't know.
I mean it looks pretty elegant.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
In fact, if you look,
it looks really nice and simple
yeah, it looks simple.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
I like it.
If you look here, though, therewas one breaking story that we
covered after I made the podcastshow notes.
If you look over and take alook at this article Ice
Universe.
He basically came out and ownedOnleaks, you know they're all
leakers they like to go back andforth.
They've got like a leaking wargoing on and so Onleaks you know
(07:37):
he gave this exclusive toAndroid headlines.
But then Ice Universe came onlast night on Twitter and he
said well, those leaks are okay, but there's one problem with
them the bezels aren't thinenough.
The real bezels are this thin, and so if you look at this image
right here, you see this is thephoto on the right.
This is the one that IceUniverse says is really the true
bezel size versus on the leftis what OnLeaks put out to
(08:01):
Android headlines, and you cansee there is obviously a very
big visual difference.
There's a huge like reductionin the bezel sizes.
Um, I mean, I would much prefer, obviously, the right versus
the left, because it just looksmore pleasing.
And the bezels the one thing Ithink uh, I know ice universe
loves this because he talksabout it like all the time, it's
one of his most favorite topicsis he likes to talk about
uniform bezels, which meansthey're all symmetric, like you
(08:24):
don't have a fatter bezel at thetop versus on the side.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
These look a lot more
symmetrical.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
On past Samsung
phones there's been the case
where, like, the top and thebottom bezel would be one
thickness and then the sidebezels would be one thickness,
and then that ends up being, youknow, kind of weird.
It's kind of weird when youhave like different.
It doesn't look pleasing.
I mean, it doesn't necessarilymake the phone perform poorly or
anything like that, but it justdoesn't look as good.
So I mean, overall, I'm prettyhappy with this.
(08:52):
I will say, though, if you goback to the base Galaxy S25 and
you look at the camera rings, Idon't think the Z Fold 6 camera
rings look as good on here asthe camera rings that were on
the S24.
I mean, check it out, I havethe S24 Ultra right here.
The camera ring design looksthe same on the base model and
the Ultra.
So look at these.
(09:13):
They look more elegant.
Like you see how the metalaround them, versus like the
textured, doesn't look aspremium in my opinion.
I just I really prefer these, like the camera rings on the
Ultra.
These are the same ones thatare on the base Galaxy S24.
I don't know, I mean thatdoesn't seem like an upgrade to
me.
It doesn't look as premium.
It actually looks a littlecheaper, in my opinion.
I would prefer they not havedone it on the Z Fold model as
(09:36):
well, but I definitely don'tlike it on the S line.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
What do you think,
tori, for me overall, like sorry
for me overall, like I'm sorry,uh, for me overall.
Just kind of looking at it, um,what I like about the back is
that it does look, uh, verysimple.
But I'm looking at the rings, yeah, um, I is like you have the
simple design in the back butthen, like the rings just kind
of look like a little bit out ofplace.
(10:01):
But what I do really like isthe?
Um, just like the curvature ofthe phone, because, like you
know, we don't have the straightedges.
Like that just looks reallynice, um, from the back.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, so apparently
this is going to be basically
flat now, mostly flat, and theother thing that you can't
really see from this view, butif you look from the side view
of this image down here thatandroid headlines had for the
render this particular one, likeyou can see, and here too, like
you can see that this lookslike very, very thin.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
And it is very thin,
it does.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
I think it's like 7.6
.
Let me click back to thearticle and I'll tell you guys.
I believe there's so manydifferent specs that I have to
memorize from all thesedifferent phones leaking out.
But yeah, it looks like it's7.2 millimeters thin.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
I wrote this article.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Samit did and I wrote
this one, so I should know.
But, like I said, there's somany different things.
7.2 millimeters is insanelythin.
This is the thinnest, and Ithink I did some research when I
wrote this.
This is the thinnest and Ithink I did some research when I
wrote this.
This is the thinnest one thatSamsung's put out since the
Galaxy S6.
But I think back to that phoneand I mentioned this in my
article.
It's back to the Galaxy S6 Edge, which was the one that had the
(11:15):
.
That's when Samsung first didlike the really dramatic curve
on both sides.
That phone was almost too thinfor me.
It felt a little sharp in thehand and maybe a little not as
like solid because it's so thin.
Stenness is good until, like itseems fragile you know what I
mean?
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Yeah, like, what is
the thickness of the S22?
I really like, even like withdata case, it feels really nice
to, I think, the S22.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Ultra and the S24
Ultra are similar.
They've got pretty.
It's pretty much quite a bitmore than this.
It's 8.9 millimeters, so that's1.7 millimeters thinner.
That's almost 2 millimeters.
2 millimeters is a lot.
When you're talking about phonewidth, I mean that's going to
make a big difference in thehand.
Yeah it is, I don't know.
I mean, since they're doing theflat-looking sides and the top
(12:04):
of the display, it might be okay, because if I think back to the
S6 and the S6 Edge, the reasonthe S6 Edge, I think, was so
sharp is because it was theirfirst time doing curved displays
and because they curved it somuch.
The S6 Edge had a huge curve.
They went to the extreme withthat phone because they were
trying to emphasize.
Here's the thing we can do.
(12:24):
We can make curved glass now.
It was like the first timeanyone had ever done it.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, that hooked me
onto it.
That's why I wanted to get thephone.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
But it wasn't really
necessarily the right decision,
because they only left like alittle tiny sliver of a metal
frame and so, because it wasjust a little metal frame, it
was like when you held it inyour hand, it was like poking
your hand, it was like, you know, pretty sharp feeling.
They're not going to have thatthis time because obviously this
is not super curved, it's notcurved glass.
So you might have enough frameand maybe it won't be a problem.
(12:51):
Samsung has also come a longway in terms of their build
quality and industrial design inthe last 10 years.
You know it's been 10 yearssince then.
Basically, I don't think it'llbe a problem.
But I was just thinking aboutreflecting on those phones.
Those are actually the firsttwo phones that I covered on
YouTube.
It's been over 10 years, sothose are the first two I
covered.
So I spent a lot of time withthose phones, since back then,
(13:14):
you know, no one was sending mephones and I didn't have the
budget to buy every phone thatcame out like I do now.
Basically, back then I had thosephones and that was it.
I was just making videos onthose phones, case videos,
everything I could find aboutjust the S6 and the S6 Edge.
I bought those two phones andthat was all that I had for the
year.
I couldn't afford anything else, so I just made a bunch of
(13:35):
content on them.
So we'll see.
I mean I like the designoverall.
I don't like camera rings.
I wish they would reconsiderthat.
I mean I don't like camerarings.
I wish they could reconsiderthat.
I mean I don't think at thispoint.
Unfortunately, at this point, itpretty much is what it is
because by November the phoneswill introduce mass production
in the factories to be ready fora January shipment.
(13:56):
Because when you're shippingobviously millions, tens of
millions of phones, you can'tjust do it like a week before
the announcement.
You've got to start like two anda half three months ahead of
time, so the design pretty muchhas to be finalized, I imagine,
at this point in order for youto ship it.
So I don't think it reallymatters what we say, but I'm not
(14:16):
a huge fan of that.
I mean, once you slap the caseon it, you don't notice it that
much, honestly.
So if you're a case person I amI mean it won't matter too much
.
If you get the galaxy s25, theregular one should still be, uh
fine.
And then, uh, here's a picture,uh render, another one of the
(14:36):
galaxy s25 ultra.
There it is with the thinbezels and the s pen next to the
galaxy s25 um, and it looksgood.
The S25 Ultra looks amazinglynice.
We don't know yet if the cameradesign on the back is going to
match that of the Galaxy S25regular, but I would assume it
is probably.
(14:56):
It seems like from Onleaksrenders that that is the case.
You would think that theyusually match the camera ring
design among all of them becausethey try to keep the design
language very similar.
But overall, I mean I think theS25 Ultra is shaping up to be a
pretty nice overall upgrade.
I mean, I know a lot of peopleare saying, well, they're not
doing anything.
But if you look at what theydid compared to what Apple did
(15:18):
in their last event, which we'regoing to talk about in the
second half of the show, they'reactually doing a lot of things
Apple did.
And half of the show they'reactually doing a lot of things
Apple did.
You don't talk about doingnothing, I mean aside from just
like adding a new processor anda couple new camera features and
that's the end of it.
Apple did almost nothing.
So I mean Samsung's at leasttrying.
They're not keeping the designexactly stagnant.
They're trying to appeal to thelittle things that their user
(15:41):
base wants, like slimmer bezels, the rounded corners, but not
fully rounded, because somepeople like the square.
They're trying to find thesweet spot.
They're at least trying toiterate on the design.
Apple's put out basically thesame exact slab of industrial
metal the last four years withno real refinements, which there
(16:04):
are definitely some things theiPhone could use.
In my opinion, while theDynamic Island is okay, it
doesn't look good compared tothe punch hole on the S24 Ultra,
like this little punch hole atthe top is way less obtrusive
than the Dynamic.
Island.
I don't like.
I mean I've used.
Obviously I have an iPhone andI ordered an iPhone for
comparison, which, like I said,we'll talk about in the second
half but I mean I just don'tlike the way the Dynamic Island
(16:27):
looks.
That's just me personally.
So let's see what else we got.
Let's go down to the next storyOne UI 6.1,.
Bad news for Samsung SmartSelect fans, and this is one
that I covered just now onYouTube.
I posted a video a little bitearlier as well.
So One UI 6.1.1 started rollingout last week.
(16:49):
We spent a lot of time talkingabout it.
I said once we talk to you guysagain, a lot of people should
have it.
It rolled out to all the GalaxyS24s in the US.
I have it on here.
It has started rolling out tothe S23s, z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5
as of yesterday.
However, bad news for people inthe US, it's not here yet.
It's in Korea and I reallyhaven't seen it anywhere outside
(17:11):
of Korea.
So our European listeners andwe do have some, so shout out to
you guys in Europe.
I see the statistics of wherewe have listeners from and the
podcast hosts that we have orwhere people listen from.
We've got a decent littleEuropean audience.
We've got like 20 or 30 peoplelistening from Europe, so I
don't think anyone in Europe hasit yet either.
So if you have an S23 or Fold 5, flip 5, let me know.
(17:32):
But while One UI 6.1.1introduced a lot of great
features, it also removed somefeatures, and one of the
features that people are justabsolutely livid about being
removed is Samsung removed theGIF creator or GIF, whichever
one you like.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
I like GIF.
Some people like GIF.
I mean, I like GIF too Peanutbutter because choosy moms
choose GIF.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
But I choose GIF when
I'm talking about animated
short clips of video.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
But hey, I mean, I
like GIF and GIF Change their
own.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Just the peanut
butter you know it is what it is
.
But anyway there used to be theability in One UI 6.1, so
before this update to have anedge panel, and I don't know if
you've ever used the edge panels.
The edge panels live over hereon the side, Tori.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Oh yeah, I use it all
the time.
That's like one of my favoritethings.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
That's why I want it
so actually if you go on your
phone and you go into the edgepanel settings like if you
actually click into the settingsfor the edge panel, like
there's a little settings cog-If you look at all these little,
panels right here.
There used to be one calledSmart Select, so it should be on
your phone.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
There should be one
called Smart Select.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
If you go hit the
settings cog right there and
then scroll through and you'llsee one called Smart Select.
Oh yeah, I see it.
So if you choose that, you'llnotice that there's this option.
It's not on mine, it's beenremoved.
In the One UI 6.1.1 updatethere's an option called
Animation, and so what thatoption used to allow you to do
is you could have a videoplaying on the screen like a
(19:05):
youtube video, and you couldjust tap on animation and it
would let you it wouldintelligently know, like where
the video was if you had it inpicture, in picture or whatever,
yeah, and it would record up to15 seconds, however long you
wanted up to 15 seconds, andimmediately turn that into a gif
.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
That you could then
share to social media.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
So people love this
because a lot of times you don't
have to go to an actual videoediting app to go ahead and
create a GIF.
This was a lot faster.
So people who like to shareGIFs and create them not only
for social media, but for theirmessaging and whatever with
friends, they like this tool alot and it was useful.
And Samsung, for some reason, removed it entirely.
(19:43):
So not only is GIF Maker gone, the animation tool they also
took away the entire SmartSelect panel from the Edge panel
.
What they did is they replacedit with a new Smart Select,
which is this icon right here, this blue icon.
It's the Galaxy AI EnhancedSmart Select.
So now, instead of youselecting a portion of the
(20:05):
screen manually, if you just tapon something, it'll try to
figure out what it is you wantusing AI, but you can also
circle something if you want.
However, no more animation tool.
So nowhere in these optionsdown here do you have the option
to turn something that's avideo on the screen into a GIF.
If you have a video on thescreen, it'll actually push the
(20:27):
video away if you try to use thenew Smart Select and basically
tell you no, you can't use itwith videos because you can't
create GIFs.
Now you can use sketched image, but.
I think the GIFs are a lot moreuseful when it comes to Smart
Select than sketched image, so alot of people are super mad
about this being gone thansketched image, so a lot of
people are super mad about thisbeing gone.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
All the different
sims, we're going to make our
GIFs Exactly Whichever one youprefer.
Yes.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
But I mean a lot of
the YouTubers that create
Samsung content Apex, who Italked about before, soggy Tech,
who's obviously the biggestSamsung YouTuber, and then
myself.
We all made videos about this.
I did provide a workaround andthere is one videos about this.
I did provide a workaround andthere is one.
I'm not going to go through thefull thing here because it's
like it's like seven or eightminutes.
I do have a video on it Plus.
You know, always be closing.
Got to get some more views forthe video.
(21:10):
So, yes, go to the show notes, click on it and check it out.
But I'll tell you the briefidea.
If you don't want to watch thevideo because you are listening
to the, what you can do is youcan use the screen recorder app.
There's a screen recorder stillon your samsung phone, in fact.
Just go up to the quicksettings, uh, and then you just
(21:31):
go through here and then you'llfind the screen recorder.
It's up in your quick togglesand if you have your youtube
video playing on the screen, just hit screen recorder and
record the screen.
And then what you can do is,once you hit screen recorder and
record the screen if you gointo the gallery, so if you go
into the gallery.
You could then tap down here inthe options on the three dots
(21:52):
menu, and then down here there'san option to create a GIF from
that.
So you can create a GIF usingthe gallery.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
I see.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Now the problem is,
if you only want a part of a
clip like if you want apicture-in-picture YouTube video
and you only want a part of ityou're first going to have to
use the edit button in here tocrop the video, because it will
be full screen.
If you use screen recorder oryou could crop it in the screen
recorder You're still going tohave to do a crop somewhere and
then use the GIF button.
So this is like a four-stepprocess now.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yeah, step process
now.
Yeah, and then you know there'sa lot of clicks along the way
instead of like with theanimation tool and smart select.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
It's just like boom
choose how long you want to
record, hit, stop, boom and thenyou could immediately share it
to social media.
There's a share button whereyou could immediately share it
to twitter, instagram, facebook,a message, whatever text
message, whatever you want.
So people are immediatelyadmittedly and rightfully a
little PO'd about thisparticular feature because they
(22:48):
want it back.
Now the good news is Sumit andI we're out here doing our
reporting.
We're doing our due diligence.
Samsung has commented on this.
I forgot about this because youknow I cover so much stuff
sometimes I forget.
That's why I'm glad to haveSumit I'm really glad that he's
here and on board, why I'm gladto have some meat I'm really
glad that he's here and on board.
Last month, when the s20, thez-fold 6, came out back in july
and early august, people noticedthis on the fold because, of
(23:10):
course, the fold 6 got one ui6.1.1 first and the flip 6.
People were upset about it backthen and I had forgotten about
it until it came out again forthe s series.
But samsung did issue astatement saying that they are
going to bring this back, so youdon't have to worry.
It won't be gone forever.
Samsung listens the GIFanimation capture is returning
(23:33):
to the Galaxy, so they did issuea statement that this will
return.
Now the question is when.
They didn't say when.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
So if you read this,
article back from Augustust 8th.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
They did issue a
statement saying it was going to
come back, but they didn't saywhen or with what update.
We can only guess.
Probably with the one ui 7.0update we will see it come back.
So the good news is you can usemy workaround to do it the long
way for like another few monthsand then probably when 7.0
comes out and we'll talk aboutthat later it's delayed, the
(24:07):
beta's delayed again.
So who knows when?
But if it comes out, probablyby the end of the year for the
stable update, I would guess.
Still, you know, christmaspresent you can make your gifts
again using.
Smart Select.
Hopefully they bring back thewhole panel, because there were
a couple other features theyremoved.
They actually removed the ovalselection tool.
Because there were a coupleother features they removed.
They actually removed the ovalselection tool.
With the new Smart Select youcan't actually get an oval or
(24:29):
circular shape.
No matter where you circle onthe screen, it always turns it
into a squircle.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
A squircle, yeah.
Or a rectangle.
That's a rounded rectangle.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
It won't let you do a
circle or a square.
And I have to wonder I wasthinking about this In the back
of my mind, I was thinking aboutthis like in the back of my
mind, I keep thinking about this.
I'm going to make a video aboutit eventually.
Are they like gearing up Ithink I said this last week to
kill smart select in favor ofgoogle circle to search and like
replace it.
Because why do you think theygot rid of the oval and circle?
Because what is google calltheir tool that does this circle
(25:03):
, circle to search.
So they're trying todistinguish between Smart Select
and Circle to search.
They're trying to make a casefor why these are both useful,
because they're trying to showyou that they're not really
different.
But they're trying to show youthat they're different because
Circle to search lets you sharescreenshots and stuff too, just
like Smart Select.
Now we talked about this lastweek.
I don't know, maybe they'regearing up to like.
(25:30):
Either they're trying to make acase for why they should keep
them or they're gearing up forthe eventual like google
messages thing, where you knowyou know they migrate.
You're just like it's time toleave samsung messages, guys
it's time, it's time it's timeto get going.
You.
You got to get going over togoogle messages.
We're merging over with google.
It's a team effort over here,so I don't know.
Maybe they're going to try tolike, maybe they're going to try
to kill.
Uh, smart select.
(25:50):
I hope not, because I know alot of people like it yeah, I
have a quick question.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Yes, for us s 22, 23,
21 users, can we still use it
as it's always been working?
Speaker 1 (26:02):
uh, for now, I mean
the s 23 users are getting 6.1.1
, so if they take that update,it'll be poof gone remember s22.
We remember we talked aboutthis last week we don't know
fully yet and we still don'tactually.
And it's, it's a good update.
We have a lot of s22 listeners,not just tori, but there's a
lot of people who startedfollowing me with the s22 and
(26:24):
the answer is we still don'thave a definitive answer from
Samsung.
Remember, the original pressrelease doesn't even mention the
S22 for 6.1.1.
But there was also a statementfrom a couple of moderators on
their community forum who dohave inside knowledge of the
updates, who said oh yeah, theS22 series is getting some of
the features.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
We just don't know
when.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
So there's no time
frame, and we also don't know
which features.
I mean this might be a featureyou don't want.
Maybe you want to keep the oldSmart Select.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
I know that's
something like.
Yeah, like you know us S22people Be like we'll just take
the old Smart Select.
Speaker 1 (26:54):
You can just keep the
Galaxy Eye optimized version of
Smart Select.
You know this is an instancewhere I don't know like I mean I
get it A galaxy.
You know AI needs to beeverywhere now, I guess, because
people have to make money, butthis is a place where I don't
know that AI really needed to bepart of SmartSelect.
No, like, no one said.
Like you know, I have a hardtime selecting the thing I need
(27:16):
with the rectangle or the ovaltool.
I need AI assistance, like youknow, like if you want to crop a
picture like the S Pen wasalready there, if you have an
Ultra.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
The.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
S Pen does a perfect
job of cropping it Like I never
thought like I need AI to makesure this is perfectly cropped
for me.
So, this is a situation whereit's like I don't know that I
really need AI in thisparticular feature and maybe in
this case it got in the way ofbecause they probably couldn't
figure out a way like for the tohelp with the gift creation.
Yeah, and also to workperfectly with that, so that
(27:46):
might be what prevented it frommaking its way in yeah.
And they're like we'll just cutit and then see if people don't
cry about it, then we can.
Just, you know, we don't haveto worry about that.
It's not a headache, but thenpeople did cry about it.
So now they've got to figure outhow to keep people happy and
still keep the AI stuff inSmartSelect.
So that's pretty interesting.
So I know some people are upsetabout that.
(28:07):
Let us know what you guys thinkin the comments.
There's this story here whichwe've been talking about this
for a while and I think me andTori have hit this story on the
head.
We are Samsung business modelinvestigators, financial
investigators over here.
We've discussed many times onthe podcast how Samsung has,
since the Fold launch, startedturning their business strategy
(28:31):
into mimicking Apple in a lot ofways, in that they try to play
it safe less innovation, try toget bigger profit margins by
reusing the same design Not tothe degree of Apple still, like
I said earlier, but definitelyto the degree where it's not
like every year we're just goingto blow up the design and make
a completely new phone, becausethat's what they did for a long
time, until the Galaxy S6, everyyear, the Galaxy S was a
(28:55):
completely new phone.
You never knew what was goingto happen when you watched the
event.
Since the Galaxy S6, it's beena consistent evolution.
There's been some years wherethere were bigger jumps than
others, but from the S1 all theway up to the S6, every year
it's like, oh my gosh, what'sSamsung going to do?
This year?
They could do literallyanything, and now it's not the
case.
(29:15):
So this story came out from acouple different people saying
that Samsung is now completelytargeting Apple and the iPhone
as their competition and they donot see Chinese Android
manufacturers as being acompetition segment for them.
So what this basically means isSamsung.
(29:36):
Basically, samsung is sayingand this leak came out from a
couple of people, including, Ithink, ice Universe commented on
this originally.
But basically what this meansis Samsung is saying we're
giving the middle finger toeveryone, says we need to
innovate to compete with Xiaomiand Huawei and Vivo.
They're like we don't carebecause those companies are
(29:56):
beneath us.
We're Samsung.
We sell a much larger volumeglobally than those companies.
We don't really care too muchabout that.
We only have one thing in oursights and that's overtaking
Apple.
In the markets where we don'talready beat Apple and of course
that includes the US, a bigmarket where they don't they are
(30:17):
way behind Apple here.
Samsung is way ahead of Apple inother regions.
They're on par or ahead ofApple in most European regions.
They are ahead of Apple inIndia.
They are ahead of Apple inChina actually, and most of the
Asian markets as well, but theUS and Canada, two markets where
Apple has still got astranglehold and so they want to
(30:39):
try to come for them.
The firm doesn't want to lookat any other brand as a
competitor.
The sales of all the chineseultra flagships combined are
less than samsung's single ultramodel.
So samit did a little researchand I believe that I mean he
said here that, uh, that if youcombine like xiaomi's ultra
phone, vivo's ultra phone, allthe huawei, all those, the sales
(31:02):
they're still less than the S24Ultra.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
I believe that.
So you think about it inperspective why would Samsung
focus on competing with thosebrands when obviously they
already stomp them into theground by doing what they're
already doing?
You want to focus on what'sgoing to get you and this makes
sense the market share from thecompany that actually is beating
you in a bunch of importantregions.
Make no mistake, I mean I'm notsaying this cause I'm an
(31:26):
American or live in the U?
S.
The U?
S is the most valuable regionwhen it comes to, you know, tech
budget.
You know Because there's a lotof people here who will just go
out and buy a new phone everyyear.
There's a lot of disposableincome and a lot of people who
don't care about spending thatdisposable income.
China has disposable income too.
Trust me, I understand China iswealthier than the US and we
(31:47):
owe them some money.
I understand that in a lot ofareas, but a lot of people in
China the culture is not to goout and spend all your
disposable income.
So even people who have havesome they're not as willing to
like spend all that on,necessarily, smartphones.
So the us is a really bigtarget market because a lot of
people here, even people whodon't have the disposable income
will go out.
(32:07):
I mean, you know, speaking ofthe iphone launch this morning,
you know lots of people probablywent out and bought a you know
new 1200 iphone who probablycan't really afford to buy a
12001,200 iPhone.
They'll buy it on like apayment plan.
And that's not me saying youknow that people shouldn't enjoy
their phone.
But the fact is, you know, ifyou're making $25,000 a year, is
it a great idea to buy?
(32:27):
Is it a great idea tonecessarily buy a $1,200 phone
every year If you need one everythree years because you know,
obviously that's fine.
But I mean some people buy themevery year regardless, but in
China and other markets theydon't do that.
So I mean it's a very valuablemarket and so they're basically
trying to reclaim not only themarket here.
But Korea has started to liketurn a little bit more towards
(32:49):
not only Apple but also some ofthe other, like Samsung.
I mean Android manufacturers, and obviously Samsung very much
hates that because Korea istheir home market.
They're like Korean teenagersshould not be using anything but
a Samsung device.
So when TM Rowe goes outsideand he sees an 18-year-old
Korean girl using a Xiaomi phoneor using an iPhone.
(33:10):
He's going to be super upsetabout that.
He's like every single personbetween 16 and 35 in Korea.
They need to have a Samsungdevice because that's Korea.
I find this interesting.
What do you think, dora?
I mean, we've talked about thisat length, but I mean, does
this make sense to you, whatthey're trying to do, what this
report says?
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Yeah, no for sure In
order for them.
I mean because I think wetalked about this on the last
podcast episode as well.
I know we have been kind ofseeing similar trends of them
kind of making designs that arelike less innovative, to try to
appeal more to what they'reseeing.
(33:52):
Maybe Apple users, you know, because, like they ship out the
same phone every year, essentially, you know, and
people are still willing to buya new color.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, just different pastels of
colors and so, uh, yeah, likeyou know, samsung has to be
looking at that.
But again, kind of what wetalked about before, uh, what
(34:12):
this generation like is allabout is like that marketing and
like I just feel like samsungjust hasn't been there in the us
front and so I I still think,uh, they can still be innovative
and whatnot, but man, they justgot to get their products and
stuff more accessible, um, toconsumers.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Um of this like
generation, I think they would
see the sales go up for sure andI think I mean I think this
whole statement here that thesevarious insiders mentioned I
think all of us, even people whodon't have inside information
to employees that are insideSamsung, can see this, and we've
kind of analyzed it from thebeginning that Samsung is really
tailoring their strategy morein line with Apple, to go after
(34:55):
Apple.
So basically they're sayingthey're coming for Apple now.
I mean, they've always beencompeting with Apple but in some
sense, you know, samsung alsowas also always trying to be
like the top Androidmanufacturer.
Yeah, I think this is nowSamsung saying we are the top
Android manufacturer.
We know that no one canchallenge us.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
No, one will Not
ready to be the top, no one will
challenge us.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
So now we're like
ready to let go of that.
We don't have any interestbecause no one else can really
compete for that spot.
Now we want to be the overallnumber one smartphone seller in
every possible region that wecan, including Korea and North
America, are their two mostimportant One because it's their
home market, and then, like Isaid, the US.
Just so many people willing tospend disposable income on new
smartphones, so obviously thathas a chance to make them
(35:40):
hundreds of billions of dollarsevery year because people just
keep upgrading.
And that's great for thembecause it makes them lots of
revenue.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
Yeah, and like I mean
now that we've been kind of
going to the movies and stuffmore on, like at least every
time I've been in the last I get.
Honestly, since the unpackedevent, there's been commercials
for Samsung.
Yeah, we saw them in thepreviews every time before.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Yeah, it's that one
where it's like can you?
Speaker 2 (36:02):
kick it.
Yes, you can.
Can you kick it?
Yes, you can I do like thatcommercial.
Speaker 1 (36:08):
So you know they're
working on their marketing
because yeah, they are.
Honestly, that's the firstsamsung commercial I can even
remember like as being catchy orsomething that stuck in my mind
over the last like four or fiveyears.
They used to have some goodones.
I remember the one that theyhad when apple first came out
with the notch they made, theone where the guy had his
haircut like a notch.
Do you remember that?
no, no yeah, they had acommercial.
(36:28):
Make that mean that once he.
I think they should not do that.
I don't want to spend forevertalking about apple or samsung
marketing, because we're goingto talk about apple in the
second half, but I don't thinkthey should make the ones that
make fun of Apple, because ifyou want to be on the even
playing field with someone, youdon't go around making fun of
them, because if you considerthem your equal right, you don't
go on like trashing their work.
That should be in anything andthey've been doing less of it,
(36:50):
but they still and we'll talkabout this in the second half as
well.
But they tweeted out every year.
They tweet out during theiphone event, like making fun of
what apple's announcing.
They shouldn't be doing that.
No, like you don't, you don'tneed to comment on it.
Like, if you consider yourselfbetter, then you don't need to
comment on that.
Like you don't see, like coketweeting out on their twitter
account like pepsi's trash andyou know what's up with that
(37:13):
blue can yeah or whatever.
They don't do that right becausethey don't need to get like
coke and pepsi.
They know like their equal levelof premium that some people
prefer each one, you know andlike even if you are below
another brand that you want toaspire to come over that, on top
of that brand, like, forinstance, sammy grew, for
instance.
I obviously would like toaspire to be above sam mobile.
(37:36):
We would like to overtake themfor that top spot.
But I recognize they're aboveme.
But I still don't trash Sam.
Oh, I respect the work thatthey do.
You know I'm not going to goout and trash my competitors, no
matter where you are in theladder.
I don't think it's a good lookto go out and trash your
competitors, but especially whenyou're in one of those two top
spots, right, like, if I wasgetting the same amount of
traffic, for instance, asanother website, I certainly
(37:58):
wouldn't be trashing them thenbecause, like, that makes me
look bad and it doesn't reallydo me any good.
Right, it's only like, if you'reway below someone and you know
you don't have the talent toever jump them, then you resort
to, like, trashing them becauseyou think that will do something
like insecurities, yeah, I meanI would never trash someone who
is performing better than me,because I believe I have the
(38:18):
talent to eventually take thattop spot and I I don't, I don't
want to sell myself short by,just you know, running smear
campaigns so I would like to seesamsung stop stop doing that.
Um, I want to spot like thisagain.
This is quick.
I talked about it last week, but sumit made this amazing
article on everything you shouldknow about one ui 6.1.
I highlighted it last week, butit's so good.
(38:40):
He keeps updating it.
We continue to update it withall of the hidden features.
He found some more features.
I found some more features.
So if you want to learn aboutall the features that you have
in One UI 6.1.1 on the variousphones that got it, it's also
got the release dates for eachof these individual ones.
It's also got which models aregoing to be supported.
(39:00):
All that information is thereand you can find it right there.
Before we get into the secondhalf, we've still got a couple
of news stories.
We're going a little longertoday because last week we cut
you guys a little short becauseof the comedy show, but before
we get into the second half ofthe show, kick up those other
news stories and talk a littlebit about hardware and the
Xiaomi I mean sorry, the iPhone16 event.
(39:20):
Let's go ahead and take a briefbreak to hear from the sponsor

All right guys, we are back anda couple more quick news stories
(40:48):
before we get into the hardwareand then reactions to the
iPhone 16 event.
First of all, one UI 7.0 isapparently delayed.
I talked about this a littlebit but a lot of leakers confirm
this, including ice universe.
People keep asking me I'mtalking about it even though I
don't really have a real update.
The update is there is noupdate.
But people keep asking me, likewhen is that beta going to come
(41:11):
out?
When are we going to get it?
Because obviously 6.1.1 was thefirst thing everyone was
waiting for and then, once wegot that, people are like well's
the beta coming out?
Because that's going to haveway more new features than 6.1.1
.
Because this is a main platform.
When it goes from 6 to 7 as thefirst number, that's a bigger
update.
The .1.1 means it's a smallerupgrade for software.
So this is going to be massiveand Samsung apparently is taking
(41:34):
a long time because, as we weretalking about and actually one
of the questions that Tori hasqueued up for the Q&A TM Rowe
has been overseeing, apparently, the 7.0 release.
He's really been looking overthe coding team's shoulders like
you guys need to change thatpiece of code there.
Make sure you put a semicolonthere.
He's really worried, I guess,about this, and we'll talk a
(41:57):
little bit about why that mightbe in the Q&A.
That's why it's taking solong.
Also, google pushed back therelease of Android 15, which we
talked about before, to thePixel.
Android 15 is not even on thePixel.
They have Pixel 9, pro Pixel 9,whatever the heck.
It's called Pro Fold, pixelFold 2.
(42:18):
It doesn't have Android 15 yetbecause Google hasn't even
rolled that out to their ownphones.
So yeah, 7.0 is delayed.
I don't know when it will beout.
My gut tells me it'll be outlike the beginning of October or
late September.
So like we still have anotherlike two or three weeks, I'm
crossing my fingers they don'trelease it.
When I go to theSteelers-Raiders game, because
(42:39):
I'm going to be super upset, I'mgoing to write T and roll a
letter.
He's not going to be on myChristmas list because I do not
want to have to take my cameraequipment to Vegas for the
weekend in case there's anemergency 7.0 beta release,
because I'll have to cover it.
If it's already out and I'vealready covered it, then I can
leave my camera at the office athome and go enjoy myself for a
(43:00):
few days.
But if it's not out, I'll bringmy camera, stuff.
But I really hope by October9th they've pushed that out and
I've already covered all thefeatures so I can enjoy the time
off with my wife.
But my luck, they'll wait andit'll come out like the moment I
get to Vegas or like in themiddle of the game while I'm at
the Steelers-Raiders game.
(43:21):
They'll push it out and they'llbe like, oh, 7.0 is out, it's
breaking.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
And then I'll have to
live stream all the 7.0
features in the middle of an NFLgame.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
That'll be
interesting due to the noise.
We have a couple of otherimportant leaks about the S25
series.
It's rumored we talked aboutthis before that the Galaxy S25
devices will all use theSnapdragon chips.
So people are wondering what'shappening with the Exynos 2500,
because that's Samsung's nextinternal flagship chip.
It's already been benchmarkedon some of the benchmark
websites like Geekbench.
(43:54):
Apparently, if QualcommSnapdragon makes it into all the
S25 devices, exynos 2500 is notdead, but it will be used with
the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 nextyear.
So it's not like they're goingto kill that internal chip.
That'd be really stupid, because they spent a lot of
money to develop it.
I wouldn't think they would.
I know everybody kind of wantsthe Snapdragon globally for for
(44:17):
their s25 device.
So the good news is you'reprobably going to get it.
It looks like, because iceuniverse confirmed it.
You know anything he says likeI'm willing to risk whatever
amount of money that I have thatit will be true, so I would
think that everybody's going toget their wish.
Finally, um, galaxy s25 ultracamera upgrade may not improve
(44:38):
everything, so apparently, apparently and this is making
some people angry it's onlygoing to get an upgraded
hardware sensor for theultra-wide camera.
A lot of people wanted thethree-time zoom camera sensor to
be upgraded, but it looks likethat's going to be kept the same
as on the S24 Ultra.
So personally, I agree, I tendto use my zoom camera more than
(44:59):
I do my ultra wide.
What about you, tori?
I'm curious, do you use zoomover ultra wide?
Do you know the difference?
I had the ultra wide like getto get a wider shot where either
zoom which one do you think ismore useful?
Speaker 2 (45:11):
I me personally I
mostly use zoom.
I don't really use the wide.
Uh, it just seems like a betterfeature or a better tool or
quicker tool for me when I'm inthe moment of trying to get a
good shot.
Speaker 1 (45:23):
Yeah, I mean I think
most I think.
I mean I would be curious LikeI might put this poll this might
be next week's newsletter poll, because this is a good question
and I'd be curious about, likeuser habits.
I've never really heard anyonesay like on socials or my
comments, that they use ultrawide more than the zoom.
I feel like most people wouldsay zoom is more valuable.
Yeah, just seems intuitive tome.
I mean because, like, if you'refar away from something and
(45:45):
like on a sign you want to zoomin, you can see what's on it if
you have a good quality zoom, either digital or optical.
Um, particularly for those ofyou who have families, like I do
, if you have kids or if youhave pets, like capturing
capturing kids from far away, like doing various things, like
when we took Jonathan to theslide park and like he's up on a
slide and I want to get like ashot of him coming down the
slide but I can't get like rightat the bottom because there's
(46:07):
other kids sliding down.
I need to use my zoom lens.
Like ultra wide is only goodfor like artistic, like
landscape shots?
Speaker 2 (46:14):
Yeah, I agree with
that which is great.
Speaker 1 (46:15):
But like I don't take
like 90% of the photos I take
are of my kids or my family.
I think that's true for mostpeople.
Like they're family, they'refriends, right, you're not
taking like, unless you're likeAnsel Adams or whatever.
Like you're some kind ofphotography savant, right,
you're not out here just takinglike landscape pictures of, like
(46:36):
the cityscape or, if you livein a rural area, like the
countryside, you're not doingthat.
That's not probably what you'reusing your phone for, but I'm
curious what people think I mean.
Of course, there's also theother use, flossy Carter.
For those of you guys who watchhim on YouTube, floss.
He calls the ultra zoom, likethe 100x zoom, scumbag zoom Zoom
on some other things.
I think we all know what we'retalking about there, but that's
not the purpose I'm talkingabout.
(46:56):
I'm talking about the shorterzoom, like the 3 to 10x, that,
being improved, would be biggerthan the ultrawide.
So I think people have alegitimate gripe to say that
they're a little upset that theone they chose to upgrade was
the ultrawide.
I would prefer the zoom overthe ultrawide and I think most
people probably would agree withthat.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra couldoffer marginally faster charging
(47:19):
and satellite connectivity.
So we've been waiting forSamsung to do satellite
connectivity, because Apple didit last year, google did it this
year on the Pixel, and so ofcourse, they had to do it too
eventually.
Satellite connectivitybasically allows you to, like
you know, for emergency servicesand things like that you can
use it to like message?
Speaker 2 (47:37):
That's my question.
Yeah, yeah, what is that?
Tori was wondering.
Speaker 1 (47:43):
Tori's like, would I
be able to walkie-talkie with
astronauts with this?
Because Tori's like that wouldbe a really cool feature.
Speaker 2 (47:49):
It would be.
Speaker 1 (47:50):
That's not what you
can do, though, oh man, if you
could turn on your phone and belike is this the International
Space Station Am I talking to?
Is this, captain Picard?
Speaker 2 (48:01):
Yeah, If you could do
that that'd be a great feature.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
I mean, I think
everyone would want to buy the
phone.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
Captain.
Picard Space Station Everyonewould want to buy it.
Speaker 1 (48:08):
Everybody would want
to buy it for that reason?
Speaker 2 (48:09):
Oh for sure.
Speaker 1 (48:13):
I'd be using my phone
all the time be like beam me up
, scotty, but that'sunfortunately not how it works.
But it is a pretty usefulsafety feature.
I think we can agree with that.
Satellite connectivity is afeature that has come to all
these various phones.
The other interesting feature, which probably interests people
more than the satelliteconnectivity it's highlighted
here this is a regulatory filing, which is where we get most of
(48:34):
these leaks.
Sumit found this.
We look at the FCC filingswhere they have to file it with
the government, like what's onboard.
But the more interesting thingis we might have faster charging
.
So it appears that Samsung isgoing to have 15-volt, 3-amp
charging, which is still 45watts of power, but the S24
(48:56):
Ultra has 9 volts, 5 amp and,for those of you who didn't take
a physics, electricity andmagnetism course, which I'm
taking right now and I justcovered you multiply these two
numbers to get the power number, which is the wattage yeah, the
power, but it is important thatthe first number is larger than
the second.
So 15 volt, 3 amp charging meansthat it's a more efficient
(49:18):
charging.
So the higher voltage meansmore efficient, which also
usually means lower temperaturewhile the phone is charging,
which would mean probably fastercharging speeds, because those
of you who know how phones workin practice, if the phone gets
hotter then it automaticallystarts charging slower to cool
it down so it doesn't overheat.
So higher voltage with the samewattage technically should mean
(49:43):
that the phone will chargefaster because the efficiency
will be higher.
Now is it going to be a lotfaster than if you actually
increase the wattage number?
Of course not.
Increasing the powerautomatically means it charges
faster, but sometimes at theexpense of destroying your
battery due to thermals andthings like that.
So all these people who arelike you know some of the
(50:04):
Chinese phones.
You might not know the story.
Some of them charge like 100watts.
I think like Vivo is like 100watts or 110 watts or something,
but like that's not good foryour battery.
I don't care what anyone saysOver time if you keep the phone
for more than, like, a year anda half the battery is now going
to be like 80 of its previousoriginal capacity?
oh, yeah, for sure.
So you know you really need tobe doing some battery management
(50:25):
, like when you charge it withsamsung phones.
You don't need to do that.
So the interesting thing hereand I was going to save this for
the iphone segment, but it'sabsolutely hilarious and since
we're talking about this, applesomeone discovered this week I
saw this on x in like the fineprint, the iphone 16 pro
actually has 15 volt, 3 ampcharging as well.
(50:47):
The iphones have never had morethan 25 watts, so that means
that it also has 45 watts.
And apple didn't even mentionthis in the keynote.
Like this is one of the biggestupgrades for the iphone and
they didn't even talk about it.
Like they talked about allthese things that probably
almost no one cares about, andthen they didn't talk about,
like what could potentially beone of the most useful upgrades
(51:09):
reasons to buy the phone.
It now charges what is notgoing to be twice as fast, but
like one and a half times faster.
Like that's a big deal.
The iPhone.
Speaker 2 (51:16):
Remember, jeff,
they're going to buy it anyway.
Speaker 1 (51:19):
That's true, I guess
they're like should we include
this slide about bumping it upto 45 watts from 25 watts?
They're like ah, at least youwon't buy it anyway.
We don't need to tell themabout that.
They're like probably theydon't even know what 45 watts
means.
So you know no need to complain.
They don't even know what anextra 20 watts will matter, so
we won't put that in the keynote.
Just tell them about all thefancy AI features and about how
(51:40):
Siri lights up the screen whenthey press the I button.
Just show them the new color.
That's like the same gold aslast year, but just two shades
darker.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
And they'll be like
oh my gosh, I need to spend
$1,700 right now.
Speaker 1 (51:53):
And then just tell
them they can wake up at 5
o'clock in the morning to orderit, and they and then just tell
them they can wake up at 5o'clock in the morning to order
it, and they'll be like, oh, I'mgoing to be up at 445.
And I was unfortunately notbecause I wanted to be, but
anyway, this is very interesting.
This actually does make me,leading into our iPhone
discussion, somewhat excitedabout getting the iPhone now,
because when I get my iPhone 16Pro Max next Friday I should
have it, by the way, when we dothe show next week and we also
(52:16):
have some exciting news at theend of the podcast.
That's the thing to keep youkind of teaser there.
We've got our first guest andwe're going to talk about that
at the end of the podcast todaywhen we wrap up the Q&A.
But I should have the iPhonenext week, but I can now plug it
in and charge and do somecharging tests to see how much
of a difference the 15 volts, 3amps makes.
Does it actually improve thecharging speed over 9 volts, 5
(52:37):
amps?
It should because of theefficiency.
But this would let us get apreview of kind of how the S25
Ultra is going to improve interms of its charging speed,
because it's going to have thesame specs.
So very interesting and doesgive me a reason to like be
excited about getting the iPhone, because I wasn't that excited
about it showing up next weekother than the fact that it's
(52:57):
just new.
But it doesn't do anything thatmy Samsung phones don't do and
I don't like using iOS.
So it's like I need a reason tobe excited about opening it,
and here it is.
So let's talk a little bit aboutthe iPhone 16 event rewind
discussion.
We already talked a little bit,but let's talk about some of
the other things.
So there's essentially two orthree reasons, I guess, to
(53:18):
upgrade.
So I have the upgraded specshere that they have just on my
phone.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro Maxessentially have bigger display
sizes, so from 6.1 and 6.7 to6.3 and 6.9 this year.
So you've got a 0.2-inch biggerdisplay.
They're almost just as thin andlight, although they are
(53:38):
slightly heavier by a few grams.
Obviously, if you increase thedisplay size, you have more
material.
It's going to be a littleheavier.
Even Apple can't make it largerand still make it lighter
unless you use a crazy differentmaterial.
And then, of course also, theresolution has gone up a little
bit, has gone up a little bit.
You've got on the 16 Pro Max,2868 by 1320, which is up from
(54:01):
the 2796 by 1290 from last year.
That's just a function ofraising the display size, of
course again.
And the other thing is they'vegot a big battery boost.
So the battery life is ratedfor 27 hours of video playback
and 22 hours of stream videoplayback and 22 hours of stream
video playback and 85 hours ofaudio playback for the 16 Pro
(54:23):
and the 16 Pro Max is up to 33hours of video playback and 29
hours of stream video playback.
However, apple never mentionsregular daily use.
That's what I hate about theirbattery life.
It's like they tell you howlong it'll last if you just
continuously play a video.
Who turns on a YouTube video ontheir phone and just leaves it
there all day?
That's not how people use theirphones.
So, and what's reallyinteresting about this is that,
(54:47):
while the battery, you know lifedoes appear like it's going to
be better.
They also didn't mention thecharging, like we said, why
didn't they mention thatupgraded charging?
It has 45 15 volt, 3 amp, likeyou'd think they'd mention that
with the battery, like yeah, ohyeah, we've got bigger battery,
we also have better charging.
Those two things together wouldbe like that'd be enough to get
a lot of people to buy, but Iguess, since tech audience is
(55:09):
not their target demographic-we'll just mention the battery
is bigger because peopleunderstand that like you don't,
know
Speaker 2 (55:15):
what wattage means
like there's like battery,
bigger, last longer and largerdisplay and lighter phone.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
They're like you last
longer have a great day.
It's got the new A18 Pro chipand, of course, apple's chips
are incredibly fast.
But here's the thing and thisis a discussion I think I always
have when I talk about Apple Iuse a MacBook Pro as my main
laptop.
We've talked about that before.
That's because on Apple'slaptops they have the best
processors, but they don'trestrict what I can do with it.
(55:42):
Mac OS lets me do whatever Iwant.
Guess what?
The iPhone?
They got the most powerfulprocessor.
It's better than Snapdragon formost tasks, but they don't let
you do anything.
Ios is locked down nomultitasking features, no
customization features, no S-Pen.
The processing power is allwasted.
It's basically like if you wentout and bought a Lamborghini or
(56:07):
a Rolls Royce my favorite car.
If I could buy any car, I wantthe Rolls Royce.
Cooling On SUV $600,000 SUV.
If you went out and bought thatcar but all you did was park it
in your driveway and drive itto the grocery store once a week
and that's all you ever did.
You never went anywhere else inthat car, why would you buy a
$600,000 Rolls Royce to drive itback and forth to the grocery
(56:28):
store?
You could buy a $25,000 basicSUV from any company and do the
same thing.
Speaker 2 (56:35):
You're not going to
any events, you don't have
anyone to impress.
Speaker 1 (56:38):
Why are you buying a
$600,000 SUV, even if you could?
So it's like why do I care thatI have an A18 Pro chip that's
faster than the chip that's inAndroid phones, but the Android
phone can still do 100 timesmore stuff because of the
software.
Honestly, if Apple would makeiOS 18 so that it actually has
productivity features and gamingfeatures and a lot of other
(56:59):
stuff that you can do withAndroid, they would have a real
case of you know, being aquality opponent.
But I mean, until they do that,it's a moot point.
They've got a new camera andguess what?
They've got a 48-megapixelultra-wide camera.
They improved the ultra-wide,so you can see the pattern.
Samsung's going to do thatbecause apple did.
(57:20):
Uh has 4k, 120 frames per second, dolby vision, video recording,
also in slow-mo.
These things I do care aboutbecause I mainly use my iphone
for b-roll video, because Idon't like to use it as a phone.
I just use as a video camera.
Uh, once I do my cameracomparisons.
So these are pretty coolfeatures.
The two camera features to meare like the most useful.
But it's funny because iPhoneusers, whenever Android phones
(57:41):
started getting high megapixel,ultra-wides, like when Samsung
did it a few years ago.
They're like oh, that's just agimmick, no one cares, and now
the iPhone 16 Pro has it andthey're like oh, that's the
greatest feature I've ever seen48 megapixel, ultra-wide.
I'm going to go out there andjust take pictures of the
landscape all the time,everything.
I'm gonna be shooting 4k, 120frames per second video all the
time, even though the videos aregoing to be like 30 gigabytes.
(58:04):
So people right, if they boughtthe base storage model, they're
gonna run out of storage afterlike four videos.
But you know, I mean thesepeople just like they bash
android for adding features andthen when apple eventually does
it, they're like oh, this is thegreatest feature ever.
We needed this feature.
Take my money of course, theyadded the new desert titanium
color, which I did buy on my promax.
It's the gold that's like twoshades darker than the old gold
(58:27):
they used to have.
Why it's interesting, I don'tknow.
It's just, it's just adifferent shade of gold.
It almost looks kind of like abrownish gold.
And then, course, the otherfeature is a bunch of Apple
intelligence features.
But guess what?
Here's the kicker UnlikeSamsung, who actually released
most of the Galaxy AI featureson the S24 Ultra when they first
rolled out it Galaxy Eye,apple's not rolling out most of
(58:50):
the AI features for like thenext three months.
So you're going to buy a newiPhone 16 Pro.
You're going to get it nextweek, on September 20th.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
You're going to get
it next week, on September 20th,
You're going to unbox it andthen they're going to say well,
thanks for giving us $1,300,$1,400.
Speaker 1 (59:05):
We'll go ahead and
get those new features to you
for this new phone by December.
So don't expect to use all thefancy new software features for
Apple Intelligence, their AI,when you unbox your iPhone next
week.
If you bought one becausethey're not coming, I do have it
because I'm running the beta onmy iPhone 15 Pro, which we
actually use for B-roll in thepodcast.
It does a good job.
(59:25):
The iPhone does a good job forvideo.
If someone said to me, shouldyou buy the iPhone as a video
camera that can also do otherstuff, I would say yeah it's a
good video camera, that is agood description Jeff, Is it a
good phone?
That is a very good description.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
Is it a good?
Speaker 1 (59:38):
phone?
Not really.
Is it a good video camera thatcan also do a few other things?
Then yeah, honestly, if peopleask me, if they're YouTubers,
what device should I buy as anintro camera?
Get an iPhone Pro model?
I mean, they are great at video.
They're better at Androidphones than video most Android
phones.
That's the one thing that theyexcel at, and Apple puts a lot
of focus on that, and they arebut they're not great phones.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
They're a great video
camera that you can use as a
professional camera.
Speaker 1 (01:00:05):
But you can do a
couple other things, like
connect to the Internet, but interms of like notification
management, getting any workdone, actually playing games,
like 90% of the stuff I do withmy actual phone, the iPhone is
pretty bad at doing it.
That's how I would summarizethe iPhone.
So do I let people always askdo you like iPhones?
I do as a video camera, I justdon't like it as a phone.
(01:00:25):
You know people are like Jeff, you hate iPhones.
No, I don't.
I like, just not for thepurpose that Apple created it
for like as a portable videocamera.
Also will happen to let mecheck the Internet or send a
message if I need to.
It's great.
I wanted to share this one.
I posted this over on X earlier.
I posted this over on X.
It's a funny meme because Italked about Back to the Future
(01:00:48):
earlier.
Check this out.
It says, literally every timeApple releases anything, android
users hey, I've seen this one.
What do you mean?
You've seen it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:56):
It's brand new from
the first back to the future.
They're watching the new.
Speaker 1 (01:01:00):
They're watching the
jackie gleason show and marty
mcfly is like hey I've seen thisone.
Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
It's a rerun.
Speaker 1 (01:01:06):
They're like what's a
rerun?
How do you mean?
You've seen it, it's brand newthat's exactly how I feel every
time I see the new iphone, likeI was sitting there listening to
them talking about like 48megapixel ultra wide camera I'm
like man, I had that like three, four years ago.
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
It's a cool feature
that I've had for a long time.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
It's not just not
that interesting to me you know,
I mean, unless you like, like abrand new, you know, like if
you want a shade of gold that'stwo darker shades than the
previous gold one they list.
I mean that's, if that's whatyou call innovation, then you
should buy an iphone.
But I mean I don't call thatinnovation.
I mean the gold doesn't lookbad.
But like releasing a gold, likeif they release like a like a
dark orange iPhone Pro titanium,I'd be like that's pretty cool,
(01:01:46):
I mean, even though I I stilldon't think that's innovation.
But I mean releasing gold.
They've had gold iPhones foreveryone's all hyped about it.
It's already sold out, by theway, the Desert Titan titanium,
of course, because they just gobuy whatever you know.
So, anyway, not really thatimpressed.
What do you think, tori, aboutthese new iphone features?
Anything that you know makesyou think that you need to go
(01:02:07):
get an iphone today no, not atall, man, not at all.
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
Uh, you know, if you
love them, you're gonna buy it.
Uh, I don't, you know, I,anyone who has an iphone who are
looking to upgrade, they'regonna buy it.
Uh, I don't foresee them reallytaking in new people unless
everyone else in their friendcircle are already using iphone
(01:02:32):
and they want to be able to usefacetime and obviously have um a
video camera.
Exactly, yeah, if obviouslyhave a video camera.
Speaker 1 (01:02:39):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:02:40):
If you need a video
camera.
Speaker 1 (01:02:42):
I mean actually.
I mean honestly, you got tothink about like from a video
camera perspective, not to harpon it.
It's actually cheap for a goodvideo camera.
I mean because a real likeprofessional YouTube video
camera is going to cost you alot of money, Like my main video
camera over there, the Sony a7IV.
The camera plus the lens costslike five grand there.
The sony a7 IV, the camera plusthe lens, costs like five grand
.
So if you spend only twelvehundred dollars on an iphone, it
(01:03:03):
makes pretty similar qualityvideo.
Now I mean for macros and stuffit's not.
I mean that's why it costs fivegrand versus twelve hundred on
the phone, not for macros, butfor most of the stuff you could
do with youtube it's just asgood.
Plus you can use it for otherthings.
If you look at from that valueproposition, it's not bad.
But if you want the absolutebest phone that you can buy that
does a lot of stuff and allowsyou to get work done and play
games, it's not the phone youshould buy.
(01:03:24):
That's just my opinion.
Speaking of games, that's agreat segment because we're
going to talk about one of theother big pieces of news this
week, because you know you canplay games on your Samsung phone
, but what if you want to playconsole-quality, console quality
games?
We have some announcement thisweek from Sony, who used to sell
Android phones, but now theymainly focus on their TV and
PlayStation business PlayStationPro, ps5 Pro coming up for
(01:03:45):
pre-order later this month.
What day was it, tori?
You told me the day.
Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
Oh yeah, I think it
was like the 29th here.
I'll just double check for my,you know.
Yeah, so the PS5 Pro is comingout.
Speaker 1 (01:03:54):
I believe it's what.
$699 is the price.
They jacked the price up a bit.
Yeah, $699.99.
$699.99.
And you know these are going tobe crazy hard to find they will
be Kind of like the iPhone.
People just go out and buythese on launch day.
They don't even read the specs, don't even know if they need it
.
They're just like my friendsare getting one.
(01:04:15):
I need it.
I got to have A littleunfortunate for me because I
just got around to buying a PS5like five months ago and I've
been playing it and enjoying it,but now I knew this was coming.
So I mean, of course, you know,I'm 38 and obviously I've got
kids so I don't have a ton oftime to play games.
But it would have been nice ifI should have waited to buy the
PS5 Pro.
I mean I still could buy one.
I'm in a good position where Icould afford to buy one and
(01:04:37):
probably sell the other one.
I probably could sell the ps5for maybe 300 bucks 250, yeah,
yeah and so I think.
Well, actually I don't know.
I should ask you sorry becauseyou've paid more attention to
this are the games backwardscompatible with the regular ps5?
I would think they would belike yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:04:52):
Well, so the thing,
uh, and which is why it's so
controversial, is for the PS5Pro, there is no disk drive.
You can buy a disk drive, butit is separately sold.
How much is that?
That I don't know.
I don't know the price on that.
Speaker 1 (01:05:12):
It's probably $100.
Probably, yeah, let's look itup.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got to know.
Speaker 2 (01:05:16):
Now it's the cash
grab here, people are very upset
about that, and also the standis also sold separately.
Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
Oh, wow, yeah.
The PS5 Pro disk drive lookslike it's going to be $80.
Okay, $80.
That's the rumor anyway.
Yeah, $80.
That's the rumor anyway.
Yeah, $80.
That's what it says.
That's like Apple-level cashgrab, where they're like, you
(01:05:44):
know, we don't put a charger inthe box and then the one that
you need is $70.
I'm like whoa man calm down.
Like whenever I buy.
Like I said, I use a MacBookWhenever I go to the Apple store
, like if I need to buy a sparecharger or something from my
MacBook Pro.
Speaker 2 (01:05:56):
The lap charger is
like $180.
Speaker 1 (01:05:58):
I'm like geez man.
Wow, what the heck.
How can the charger cost that?
Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
much.
Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
I mean, it has a cool
cable and the design looks nice
, but I could get a much cheapercharger from Anker or something
.
What the heck?
That's a lot of money, man, notincluding the disk drive or the
stand Seems like a pretty bigcash grab.
Speaker 2 (01:06:14):
It does.
The feature is that now you canplay games in 8K.
Is that what it is?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's going tobe 8K.
They also have, let's see hereI got to pull up, okay, all
right.
Yeah, it's going to have alarger GPU and AI driven
upscaling, okay, well, I mean, Iguess here's my question though
(01:06:35):
, because you know to tie thisback to Samsung a little.
Speaker 1 (01:06:38):
I mean, I don't mind
talking about tangentially
related stuff occasionally onthe show, because obviously it's
a part of we, don't?
You know we like cover Samsung, but we have other interests too
.
But I mean here's my questionhow many people?
I have one, but I mean I coverSamsung stuff and I do tech for
living on YouTube.
I have an AK TV.
How many people actually havean 8K TV that can take advantage
(01:06:58):
of the 8K?
Because if you buy it and youdon't have an 8K TV, you might
as well just keep the PS5.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
You might as well
just keep a regular PS5.
Speaker 1 (01:07:05):
That's what I don't
understand.
What was the other featuresaside from the?
Speaker 2 (01:07:08):
8K, just a larger GPU
and the AI-driven upscaling,
whatever that means.
Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
I think that means
basically, if you have 4K TV,
it's going to try to upscale itto 8K using AI, but it's not
going to look as good.
I mean, the main benefit ofbuying it would be if you have
an 8K TV, but 8K TVs are stillpretty expensive.
Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
I mean mine was an
investment that I bought from
Samsung.
I don't remember how much itwas.
I got a good deal obviously, because I do stuff with
Samsung's PR and things.
I mean I got a good deal on it,but I think the retail price of
the AK TV I bought was $8,000.
It's not cheap.
I didn't pay $8,000.
I paid like half or less thanhalf of that, but I paid closer
to what the 4K price of theequivalent one is.
(01:07:49):
I have the 85-inch AK TV, butit's not cheap.
So I think most people probablydon't have one if they go buy
the PS5 Pro.
So I just wonder.
My question is I mean, obviously I guess I need to get
one, since I have the 8K TV butif you don't have the 8K TV,
what's the huge difference?
We'll have to see.
We'll see when people get themand review them.
(01:08:11):
Is the upscaling really goingto matter?
If you have a 4K TV, it'll beinteresting to see what the
difference is between them.
As someone who doesn't reviewgame systems, obviously I don't
I'm just saying that I know 8ktvs don't have a huge adoption
rate yeah because samsung makesthem, but they don't sell a high
volume of that.
I know that because I know a lotabout samsung's business model.
Even outside of mobile.
They don't sell a huge volumebecause they're so expensive.
(01:08:32):
I mean the 8k one that I haveis eight grand.
That's like the cheapest onethey sell.
I mean their AKTVs go all theway up to like $20,000.
And they have one that's like98 inches I think that's like
$50,000.
There are people who have crazymoney who don't care, so they
buy those, but not your averageperson is buying $50,000.
Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
AKTV.
Speaker 1 (01:08:53):
So we'll see.
Let us know what you guys thinkabout PS5 Pro.
Let us know what you guys thinkabout.
Ps5 Pro.
It seems very expensive, though, considering if you want to buy
the disc drive it's actually$780 plus tax.
You're looking at about $860,almost a grand for a console.
If you don't have an 8K TV, I'mworried about how valuable that
(01:09:16):
will be of an upgrade.
I guess, since I have it, maybeI'll get one and sell my PS5,
and then I can talk about theexperience Because I'll play
Tekken on it.
If Tekken's going to play in 8K, that'd be cool and I'd love to
play some Tekken 8 in 8K.
Yeah, that would be.
Maybe I have Tori over, we canplay some 8K, yeah, tekken 8.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
I give it a try with
the EK, the Iron Fist.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
Tournament App of the
Week real quick Gallery Labs.
I don't even know if you knowthis story, so this is another
one where it's like let's see ifTori's ever heard of this.
So inside your gallery app, ifyou open gallery on your phone.
Speaker 2 (01:09:51):
So I'm going to go to
gallery.
Speaker 1 (01:09:53):
Yeah, so you guys
might know this if you follow my
channel.
Samsung has a hidden menucalled gallery labs inside of
gallery and you go to thegallery itself and tap down here
where it's the other threelittle lines.
If you go to the settings, scroll all the way down to the
bottom where it says aboutgallery.
If you tap on about Gallery andthen you're going to do is tap
(01:10:13):
on the gallery text and theversion number repeatedly,
You've got to keep doing it.
It's going to say Now EnablingGallery Labs.
Speaker 2 (01:10:22):
You've got to tap on
it, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:10:23):
Yeah, and so now,
once you do that, if you go back
to the previous menu at thebottom, you're going to see this
Gallery Labs menu.
If you scroll all the way down,it's going to say Gallery Labs.
Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
Did you see it?
Okay, so this latest versionalready installed?
Speaker 1 (01:10:40):
Okay, I do not see it
yet Let me see real quick.
You may have to once you.
Let's see if we can get thisfor Tori.
You may have to say you wantGallery Labs to be turned on
once you actually tap it, ormaybe oh, there he is.
Oh, it says one more GalleryLabs will be enabled.
We didn't tap enough times.
(01:11:02):
You really have to go in on it.
So now it's at the bottom there.
So if you go into Gallery Labs, there's actually some new
features here in OneUI 6, 6.1.1.
Tori, you have the old version,so, yeah, you can see the
features that were there beforeand they removed a couple
features.
So I made a video on thisthat'll be posting next week.
They now have the show sticky, date and data and location, the
(01:11:24):
slideshow with selected items, which allows you to select some
items and then create aslideshow just from, like, some
pre-selected photos inside thegallery, and then they also have
the hamburger menu in thebottom.
So what this does is it lets youmove the uh, little three dots
menu for your photos.
Yeah, to the to the bottom.
(01:11:45):
So if you tap on a photo, like, let's go here, tap on a photo,
the three dots menu will bemoved to the bottom here.
If you look on yours, if you goto a photo, if that option is
not turned on, it's gonna thephoto is gonna have the three
dots menu at the top instead ofat the bottom.
So if you just go to one photo, yeah, see how the three dots
are at the top.
Oh yeah, so you can move it downto make it easier for
one-handed use.
(01:12:06):
So there's a couple of newfeatures in here.
I just wanted to bring them topeople's attention.
They also removed one feature.
If you go to your gallery labs, you should see a feature called
Remote Gallery inside GalleryLabs.
This was a feature Samsung hadproposed that would allow you to
essentially view your photosfrom another device on the same
(01:12:28):
network.
Yeah, so you could be on yourGalaxy Book 4 Edge that I have
over here.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:12:32):
And you'd be able to
like, remotely go into your
phone on any other device that'son the same Wi-Fi, even like an
iPad, and view your photos inthe gallery.
Oh, but this photo, thisfeature never worked, ever since
they put it in the labs.
Yeah, Labs are basicallyexperimental features that
they're trying, so you can neverexpect they're going to work
forever yeah, I see the uh, thelittle.
Speaker 2 (01:12:53):
Yeah, there's a
warning.
I mean you can ignore thewarning.
Speaker 1 (01:12:56):
The warning is like
oh no, your phone's gonna die
not really.
I mean it basically.
Something might not workforever though, because if you
try it, this stuff they'retesting.
If they don't like the feature, they just delete it and they
don't give you a warning, sothey're not making any
warranties that'll stay forever.
But of course, as we saw withsmart select, they just delete
it and they don't give you awarning, so they're not making
any warranties that it will stayforever.
But of course, as we saw withSmart Select, they just delete
features without telling youanyway.
Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
So it doesn't really
matter.
They just do it from anywhere.
They don't care if it's in thelabs menu or not, they're like
we'll just delete it from themain menus too.
Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
But yeah, that's
disappointing.
I was hoping that would workeventually.
They put it in there last yearthe remote gallery and then they
just took it out and didn'ttell anybody they were going to
take it out.
But that's been removed, aswell as a couple of other
options that were less popular.
But if you guys want to playwith some features that are
hidden in One UI 6.1.1, theseare kind of buried in the lab
(01:13:45):
section so they're not in thechange log.
But I did a video and I'll haveit out sometime next week.
I forgot to mention maybe I'lltalk about this a little bit
next week, since I skipped overit and we should really get to
the Q&A.
But I have the Pixel Watch 3 XLin the house right here.
This is the new Pixel Watchpaired into the Pixel 9 Pro Fold
.
It just came in this week.
(01:14:07):
It's a very cool watch.
They used to have a reallysmall face on it.
It it's a very cool watch.
They used to have a reallysmall face on it.
It's like tiny the last Pixelwatch and I couldn't use it.
So now they made the facebigger, so it is usable.
It's still not nearly as big asin fact we can kind of hold it
up.
I mean, I can hold it up nextto Tori's Galaxy Watch Ultra.
You guys can see the size kindof difference.
We can kind of hold them uphere.
(01:14:30):
Yeah, I mean because it doesn'thave the casing around the side
.
They're similar, but the watchultra is still bigger and it's
going to be a little more rugged, so like, if you want.
I mean, honestly, the thingabout this watch is, while I
like it, the bezel is likecompletely exposed.
You know you can see like it'sall glass.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
There is no real like
like durable casing, like on
the ultra.
Speaker 1 (01:14:53):
You can see it real
nice.
Yeah, you can see it just fromlooking at this one.
Like if you bang this into likea door or something like, you
have a good chance of cracking.
This is all glass right here.
That's all the screen so youhave a good chance of cracking
this one.
I've already banged into a fewthings, got a couple scratches.
I only had it for four days.
So while this one looks elegantand it does look good- on the
wrist, for sure the durabilityis questionable.
(01:15:14):
Like if you're doing stuff evenif you're like me and you're
busy and you're going in and outof doors and running around all
day doing stuff, you don't evenneed to be mountain climbing or
snowboarding or whatever, justdoing regular daily stuff, like
as a job.
You're probably going toscratch this up and hopefully
not crack it, but I'll try to doa full comparison to this to
the Galaxy Watch Ultra, becauseyou can use this with your
(01:15:35):
Samsung phone, so it is anoption for you.
It doesn't have to be used witha Pixel device because it's any
Android phone.
So if you're interested and youlike the design of this better
than the Galaxy Watch, I'llprobably do a full comparison
video and we'll probably try totalk a little more about because
that might be a 20-30 minutesegment.
We can get into some fitnesstracking, because I know we
talked about the fitnesstracking with the Watch Ultra.
It was not as accurate.
(01:15:56):
I'm doing some testing so we'vegot to see if this one's better
.
It uses Fitbit, which is builtin on the Pixel Watch, to kind
of do the step tracking.
Otherwise, let's jump into thatQ&A.
Speaker 2 (01:16:13):
Tor, you've you and
Hector, you've got a couple
questions queued up.
Let's hear those questions.
Let me get out of Gallery Labs, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:16:17):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
So first off, we have
Galaxy Nexus giving us a really
good comment about the show sofar.
But moving into his question,he's asking do you guys think if
Samsung loses more ground inthe foldable market next year
(01:16:39):
with the Z, fold 7, flip 7, itcould mark the end of TM Rowe's
tenure as the head of theirmobile department?
I've heard he's been a littlebit more hands-on as of late
since the July Unpacked event, and I'm wondering if he isn't
feeling the pressure.
Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
Yeah, so this is a
good question, as usual.
Another question, kind of aboutthe business side of Samsung,
which we do like to talk about alot on this podcast.
I enjoy talking about thebusiness side of mobile.
Yeah, I think TMRO is under alot of pressure, particularly
because you know he's the leaderof the mobile but he's not the
end-all, be-all leader ofSamsung.
(01:17:18):
We've talked about this before.
Like, samsung is a massiveconglomerate.
Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
They do TVs,
refrigerators, dishwasher
everything Name it, includingthe kitchen sink.
Speaker 1 (01:17:26):
Literally, they sell
kitchen sinks.
So you know he's under pressurefrom the president of Samsung
Electronics, which is his boss, and he wants obviously
innovation and to really kind oftake over Apple, as we talked
about earlier we talked aboutthis earlier as well he's
overseeing One UI 7 directly.
He's in the lab and they'retalking to the people like you
(01:17:47):
guys got to be fixing this andthat and that's why it's taking
longer to get the software.
I think the S25 Ultra and 7.0,well, 7.1, which will probably
be the version on the S25,because they usually do 7.0
releases on the old phones andthen the new S line gets like a
little upgrade with some newfeatures.
That will be a make or breakmoment, I think, for him,
(01:18:11):
because a lot of people rate himvery negatively compared to DJ
co, which we talked about lastweek, and comparing the two just
because DJ co is moreinnovative.
So I do think he's on the hotseat.
Just like you know, footballcoaches when they're losing
teams, losing is like you got tostart winning or you're going
to get fired.
Speaker 2 (01:18:23):
I wanted some games
Like you.
Got to start winning somelaunches.
Speaker 1 (01:18:25):
You got to start like
showing some massive numbers
because, like, he's been steady.
But samsung, you know, is kindof like alabama, like me and
tori's favorite football team.
We don't want to win nine gamesand go to a bowl game.
We expect to win nationalchampionships every year.
Yeah, like, samsung is not tcl,you know, they're not lg, they
don't expect to win nine games.
You know, metaphorically, theyexpect to win every time.
(01:18:47):
They want to be on top of thesmartphone sales chart.
So I do, I I think.
What do you think?
Where you think?
I mean, I think samsung fans ingeneral are growing tired of
the complacency.
So I think, even though theywant to play it safe, I think
they need to bring someinnovation, you know, and I
think the z-fold special editionwhich we talked about last week
, with all those upgrades, maybethat could be a big chance for
(01:19:08):
him.
Speaker 2 (01:19:09):
Yeah, I think so too,
and I think we talked about
this maybe on like the second orthird episode of our podcast
here.
But what people know Samsungfor is that innovation in the
phone game, and it really hasjust been a very consistent like
all right, you have the series, now you have the foldable.
(01:19:30):
We're just going to keep itmoving, not really any changes,
and they're kind of focusing ontheir you know, user ability,
which is what Apple focuses alot on.
Speaker 1 (01:19:42):
I know Apple's
phoning it in there because
they're releasing features threemonths after the new phone.
So, Apple's trying to see howmuch little they can do to still
make phones.
They're like maybe we can justsay the features are released in
12 months and then by the timewe get to the next one they'll
forgot about it.
Yeah, we can just sell them thenext phone.
Speaker 2 (01:19:58):
Yep, and so you know,
yeah, like kind of what you
said, though I just thinkthey're not probably number
growth.
Especially, you have this widerange of you have this really
expensive foldable phone andthen you have just s series and
they're just not probably notgetting any new people already
(01:20:20):
on the samsung train and so he'sprobably feeling some pressure
of, hey, you got to get.
I think it's a combination ofyou need to get more people um
buying, which I think is whywe're seeing more commercials.
I think there's probably, ifhe's really managing and
overseeing the new One UI,there's probably a lot of
(01:20:41):
pressure on increasing userability and there's probably a
lot of pressure on him just tokeep the phone market going in
general.
So I do think there's probablya lot of pressure on him.
Speaker 1 (01:20:53):
Yeah, and I think too
we talked about this on another
episode as well but I thinkhe's also under pressure to
start getting poached Appleusers to the foldable phones
before Apple releases theirfoldable phone.
And we've heard that that couldbe 2026, so he's only got one
more launch, maybe before Applereleases a foldable Could be
2027, but he might as wellassume 2026, because once Apple
(01:21:15):
releases a foldable iPhone.
Like all the Apple users are notcoming to Samsung, no.
So you need to poach them nowso that you can say, look, we've
got this cool piece of hardwarethat you want that you can't
get from Apple before Applestarts putting that out, because
Apple, like I said before, onething they will do is they'll
have polished hardware when theyrelease a flip, because they're
going to release the flippableiPhone first.
(01:21:36):
That's the foldable they'regoing to do.
They won't have much of acrease, I promise you.
Apple's waiting until they can.
That's why they're waiting.
I guarantee you, apple, theyprobably looked at the flippable
phones and they're like we'dlove to do it, but that crease
looks unsightly and that's justnot the Apple way.
They're all about clean design.
Speaker 2 (01:21:54):
The same design.
Once they come up with a design, they just recycle it.
Speaker 1 (01:21:58):
But when they
introduce something new, which
is like every 15 years or so,it's clean and they make sure
it's refined to the point wherethere's no big glaring issues,
especially from a visualstandpoint.
So Samsung needs to try to getthose and I think, tm Rose,
under a lot of pressure from thehead of Samsung Electronics,
we've got to get some of thoseApple people over here while we
(01:22:18):
have this hot piece that Appledoesn't have and they don't have
foldables.
Speaker 2 (01:22:22):
They want it.
I mean, my friends who I talkto, who have iPhones, they're
like, we really like the foldand the flip.
We think it's so cool that youcan do that.
It's just that I'm not willingto give up FaceTime or whatever
the case may be.
But I do think they are on theright path of again trying to
(01:22:45):
have those catchy commercials, trying to have a younger,
because, like in all thecommercials that they've shown,
like there's been like a younger, like probably someone in their
early 20s or in their 20s,trying to capture that, because
if they can get them on thephone, I almost think that they
should show in some of their adsalternatives that you could use
(01:23:07):
instead of FaceTime.
Speaker 1 (01:23:08):
Oh yeah, and iMessage
on Android.
What do you think about that?
Doesn't that be a good strategy?
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
Yeah, actually I do
that.
Speaker 1 (01:23:13):
That's what people
care about, yeah like if they
showed like, because Google Meetis the main like default video.
Like if you showed people likeyou can have the same great
experience with Google Meet.
And if Samsung and Googlepartnered to make it basically
I'm not saying they should makeit exactly, but make the UI look
similar to FaceTime you couldmake those people comfortable.
And then RCS is already now onthe iPhone.
(01:23:34):
So basically you could say well, the iMessage features are
going to be almost the same anda lot of them are.
If they could work to makethose even more similar, samsung
could sell that.
And now you've got the greathardware plus you've got some
features that make peoplecomfortable, because I do think
iMessage and FaceTime peopledon't realize, like for the
younger people that's like a bigdeal.
Yeah, it is a big deal To me,it's hard for, like people, my
(01:23:54):
age, so if you're my age, youknow, even, maybe even Tori's
age.
But for, like, the 20-year-oldstudents now like that I taught
at the university they likedon't want to be a green bubble,
yeah, yeah and they don't wantto be the person that's like
holding up the group video callbecause they don't have FaceTime
.
You know they don't want to beleft out.
So you know the ability to showpeople some of the workarounds
(01:24:16):
and there are some.
I've made some on my channel, but they're not being advertised
by Samsung.
You have to actually seek thatout yourself.
And, unfortunately, most of theApple users who would
transition over they're also alittle scared because they're
not that techie and they think,oh well, if I go to Android, I
need to learn more, I need to bemore technical which.
I think is like a stigma, likeAndroid's, like you need to know
more, not really.
(01:24:38):
I mean, there's a lot more youcould do if you want.
But Samsung is easy to getonboarded.
They just need to make thatkind of out there put that out
there?
Speaker 2 (01:24:46):
Yeah, I think so too.
So, samsung, if you'relistening, listen to Jeff.
He has some good ideas.
He's listening to this, forsure.
Speaker 1 (01:24:53):
He's got open his
Galaxy Z Fold 6, and he's like
oh, he's got it right here.
He's got the translate up, sohe's translating this into
Korean right now.
He's just got the podcast up onYouTube.
On the other side, he's got theinterpreter.
He's using his features from6.1.1, get real-time listener
mode.
Translating it to Korean from6.1.1.
Speaker 2 (01:25:14):
Get real-time
listener mode translating into
korean.
So you're welcome.
You're welcome, tmro.
Speaker 1 (01:25:16):
We're trying to keep
your job float man, yeah man hey
, I like dj co, but I I'm tryingto keep your job.
I know obviously you only makelike 20 million dollars a year.
You need the money obviouslyprobably don't have enough money
yet, so we're trying to helpyou out anyway.
What was the other question,dory?
Speaker 2 (01:25:30):
but yeah, um, all
right.
Next question is from benny new.
Uh, again, we're trying tofigure out.
Speaker 1 (01:25:37):
Uh, exactly, trying
to piece this one together.
I have a couple of ideas, but Ididn't know exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:25:41):
So as this is uh, I
can make a part of a photo, a
clip.
Uh, where can I find these onthe S24 Ultra?
Speaker 1 (01:25:50):
So I have two guesses
.
The first guess is he may betalking about the fact that on
the new version of One UI 6.1.1,if you have a photo that has
like a person in it, like here'sJonathan Day, roaring at me at
the museum, I told him to actlike a dinosaur.
He's outside the NaturalHistory Museum.
One thing I think he might betalking about is if you want to,
(01:26:10):
to clip out a person and makeit like a sticker, or you can
share it.
You can long press on the imageand it will allow you.
Once you long press, it willtake the person and pull the
person out and you can now turnthis into a sticker.
You can save as a sticker, copyit, share it.
You can also save as an imageor you can edit it.
So if you want to save it as asticker now, the next time you
(01:26:31):
do your messages you can insertlike that little thing as a
sticker.
Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
So that's one thing.
Speaker 1 (01:26:36):
I think he might be
talking about that and see if
you can actually make differentsticker styles.
Vintage cartoon.
Actually, I've never seen thisbefore.
Is this new?
I'm discovering new featureshere on the podcast.
I guess I might have to make avideo about this, because I'm
going to screenshot this.
I've never seen it.
I didn't know they haddifferent sticker styles.
This might be a new feature in6.1.1.
I had not tried to make asticker yet, so well, hey, that
(01:26:58):
might be another video comingnext week.
The other thing that I couldthink that he might be talking
about is if you have a photo andyou open this inside of the
gallery, you can actually createif you swipe up on the photo.
There will be an option thereon certain photos to create
what's called live effect.
Do you see live effect there?
(01:27:19):
If you tap on live effect, whatit does is it adds like a
motion effect to the photo andso it looks like the photo is
like panning around theenvironment.
You see how it's moving, yeah, yeah yeah, like it adds like a
moving photo, so it adds like amotion effect to your photo and
then you can save that as a copyor you can share it to social
media.
So I also have a video on thisbecause it's part of the new
6.1.1 features.
(01:27:40):
Those are my two guesses.
If I didn't answer what youwere asking, vinny, you can
certainly reach out and try toclarify.
But those are my two guesses ofwhat he was talking about
either clipping the images froma photo and making it a sticker
or a separate image, or doingthe live effect, and so both of
those I have videos on.
I'll put them in the show notes.
Answer that question for youguys.
(01:28:01):
I think those are the questionsright, those are the ones we
have?
Speaker 2 (01:28:05):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1 (01:28:06):
Definitely keep
giving us great questions.
We love the Q&A.
Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
Yeah, just put them
in the comments, the more
questions we get.
Speaker 1 (01:28:13):
I'm always happy to
reserve more time for Q&A and do
a little less hardware someweeks, because I mean I always
have new hardware but if it'snot Samsung-specific I don't
have to talk about it Like this.
I want to talk about it, but wedon't have to if we have more
Samsung questions.
I want to close the show.
One next week.
Hopefully we'll have the newpodcast orientation with the
sign set up.
At least we're going to havethat.
Two next week we're going tohave our first guest on the
(01:28:36):
podcast and I'm trying to workout the time with him, but he's
already agreed to do the show.
Max Weinbach a lot of you guysprobably know him.
He has about 250,000 followerson X.
He was basically a Samsung guycompletely about eight years ago
ago.
He was only 16 years old.
(01:28:57):
Eight years ago he starteddoing samsung leaks.
When he was 16, um kind of blewup.
Um, he did a lot of stuff withsamsung firmware and uh.
Then he kind of grew up and gotother interest and started
dabbling in other tech.
He got a, he went to college, got his degree and now he's an
analyst actually for a companythat evaluates text products.
He has a pretty cool job.
He is an iPhone user as well.
Now he uses both Android andiOS.
Speaker 2 (01:29:18):
We won't hold it
against him, but since it is,
iPhone week.
Speaker 1 (01:29:22):
I wanted to talk to
someone who is an avid iPhone
user Because obviously I haveone, but mine, mainly, is only
used for video.
I don't use it on a daily basis.
I want to hear what he has tosay in his take on iOS 18, apple
intelligence, samsung versusApple, since obviously he used
to be an all Samsung guy.
His thoughts on that should bean incredibly interesting
(01:29:44):
podcast, so I'm really happy toget him as our first guest.
I listened to some of the otherideas because I asked people on
X like who they wanted to see.
He was one of them.
There's a couple other guys Ireached out to, so we're going
to start having more regularguests going forward.
Not that me and Tori aren'tinteresting, but I think it's
time to start mixing it up withguests because you know,
podcasts are all about guestsand now you guys kind of know us
pretty well, I'd say, and we'vekind of settled into doing this
(01:30:05):
as a pair.
So now it'll be interesting toget someone else's thoughts on
all this stuff we talk about atSamsung every week.
Otherwise, anything else, tori.
Speaker 2 (01:30:15):
No, just our
catchphrase.
Speaker 1 (01:30:16):
I think that's about
it, I mean, the only thing left
to do this week is to remind youguys to never stop expanding
your galaxy.
