Nikki (00:01):
It's been a long day at
work, you say to yourself.
As you put your car on park, you turn the keys and take them
out of the ignition, you pull onthe driver's side handle and
the door opens with ease.
You get out of the car and slamthe door shut and push the lock
button on your keys twice justto make sure that it is in fact
(00:21):
locked.
Your car beeps twice, confirming that it is locked,
and then you begin to walk downa dirt path.
As you walk down the path, youcheck your watch 102 am.
You read aloud.
You roll your eyes.
I should not have taken thatextra three hours at work.
(00:42):
A moment or two of walking more, and you come across a large red
covered bridge.
It is lit from all sides butstill has an element of mystery
to it.
You take two cigarettes out ofyour pocket and a lighter and
make your way over to the sideof the bridge.
You take a lighter out of yourpocket and light one of the
(01:04):
cigarettes that are in your hand.
You then take it and put it onthe ledge in front of you.
You take the other cigaretteand pretend to light it, and
then bring it up to your lipsand pretend to smoke For a few
moments.
Nothing happens.
Then the cigarette on the ledgelights up and smoke comes out,
almost as if someone wasstanding right beside you
(01:26):
smoking.
The cigarette lights up a fewmore times.
Hello Tennessee, you say to theair in front of you.
This is just one of the manytales of the haunted and
historic Socks Covered Bridge inGettysburg, pennsylvania.
Hello and welcome to theSanctum of Strange.
(01:59):
This is episode three.
We're still in Gettysburg, buthaving fun After the orphanage.
We were pretty pumped Emily, jane and myself that is so we
decided to go to Socks CoveredBridge.
This is a very dark bridge Well, not literally, but its history
is dark.
(02:19):
When we got to the bridge itwas something out of an old
thriller or horror movie wherethe main character is running
from the person chasing them andthey come across a bridge to
hide.
Is it just me?
Maybe?
Maybe I've seen too much TV, Idon't know.
But you can find photos atsanctumofstrangecom, definitely,
(02:43):
and they'll also have photos ofour expeditions and adventures.
Construction of Sox Bridgestarted in 1854.
According to the legends, threeConfederate soldiers who were
convicted of being spies wereunalived from the beams in the
bridge and their bodies werefound by Union soldiers who were
(03:06):
patrolling the area.
Jane said a few years ago whenshe and her family went to the
bridge they did the cigarettething, like I told you about
Tennessee, to see if the rumorswere true.
They lit a cigarette and put iton the ledge of the bridge.
It started to give off smoke.
They lit a cigarette and put iton the ledge of the bridge.
It started to give off smokeand started to burn, like
someone was right there smokingit.
(03:28):
The locals call him Tennesseebecause a local ghost hunting
team called him that Seemed toget his name from one of their
EVP devices.
Socks Bridge was very well lit,but I assume it's because it's
(03:48):
over a little lake and theydon't want you to have a lawsuit
, which is, I mean,understandable.
They don't want you to drown oranything like that.
You know, get unalived onaccident, something like that.
When we went there there werefew people exploring the bridge.
It's a quiet area but totallyspooky.
You can walk up and down thebridge no problem and for an
(04:08):
older bridge which is just alittle, I wouldn't say a little
over 100 years, it is over 100years old, I believe it's 150
plus.
It still looks very good for100 years plus.
The back half of the bridge islike a field where people were
walking around.
I walked up and down the bridgea few times, taking it in.
(04:29):
Jane laid on the back side ofthe bridge there's like a cute
little area.
It's like a little off-ramptype thing so she sat on the
edge of that.
There was a spot to sit and laynext to the water.
Emily walked up and down thebridge and then also hung out on
the backside of the bridge.
(04:49):
I made one half a turn andfaced the little lake.
It was peaceful and quiet.
Saying that sounds so strangeand surreal due to its dark
history.
I hope that the spirits andghosts of the area got to
experience some peace.
After looking out on the lake afew more minutes, I turned and
(05:14):
looked at the bridge's woodenbeams.
They were old and well wooden.
I scanned the rest of thebridge and a few people were
going up and down the bridgetaking photos and videos, I
assume trying to get photos ofthe ghosts or spirits or
whatever else is around there.
Another few minutes went by andI joined Jane and Emily.
(05:38):
We decided that the ghosts andspirits were probably tired and
nothing was going to happen, sowe decided to go to the
battlefield.
Sometimes that does happen.
When you go to a place that'ssuper crowded, with a bunch of
people coming in and out, different energies shifting and
different auras and experiencescoming in and out, sometimes
(06:01):
it's just too much for thespirits and ghosts.
That's why when you see ghosthunters, like a TV show or
something, there's onlytypically one group of people
that go into the area.
The battlefield was on our wayhome, which was a good thing,
because all of us were gettingvery tired.
(06:21):
Jane pulled the car over and wewalked across the dark road to
the battlefield, which is closedat nights.
So around it is a wooden fencewhich we all stood on top of and
looked out at the open field.
There was a very big tree toour left and countless other
trees in the distance.
Across this long stretch ofland, on either side are statues
(06:45):
, a few run-and-down houses.
I would have liked to go on atour of the battlegrounds, but
they were closed at the time.
We went and unfortunately inthe morning we would have had to
go home.
We went and unfortunately inthe morning we would have had to
go home.
Anyway, we looked out onto thebattlefield as far as our eyes
(07:06):
could see.
For a few moments I didn'treally see anything.
I was a little disappointed,I'm not gonna lie, until I
looked over at the tree to myleft.
It looked like a soldiercarrying an old weapon running
across the field to the tree.
I pointed to the soldier, butunfortunately he was already
gone in the blink of an eye.
(07:26):
I didn't think that Jane andEmily saw the soldier, which
they unfortunately didn't.
I thought it was really coollooking, but it was also kind of
weird.
It was like a shadowy soldiery.
It was kind of like you couldsee through him.
It was very weird, like neverhad that experience before.
(07:48):
So we all stood on the fence'sbottom section for a little bit
longer.
The air had gotten cold at thispoint and none of us were
really prepared for it.
If I'm being quite honesthonest, I was in a hoodie.
It was very cold.
I'm just gonna let you know itwas cold.
It was the middle of October.
(08:08):
It was cold.
We were all pretty cold, like Isaid.
So we decided it was time to goback to the cabin and rest.
We packed a little once we gotback in order to make it easier
for us in the morning and thenwe all proceeded to fall asleep.
The morning came and we packedthe car with our stuff and
(08:30):
checked out.
We decided to eat breakfast andstop by the ghost tour
headquarters, and Jane picked upa shirt for our friend Olive.
Before getting in the car toleave Gettysburg we all said a
little mantra.
So here's the thing Sometimesif you don't tell ghosts that
they can't come with you, theywill come with you, and we
(08:51):
definitely didn't want that.
I don't know about Jane andEmily, but I have a cat and he
would not like it if I brought aghost home.
Let me rephrase that my motheralso would not like it.
If I brought a ghost home, Iwould probably be kicked out.
The ghost would also somehow bekicked out with me.
We would have to find a placeand I would charge the ghost
(09:12):
rent.
So our mantra was like this weappreciate the experiences, but
no ghosts or spirits can comeback with us, or something along
those lines.
We thank them for their timeand their patience with us, and
just the experience in general, and then headed home, and that
(09:36):
is the story of our trip toGettysburg.
And that is the story of ourtrip to Gettysburg.
So now it's time for somestories and encounters from
other people who have gone toGettysburg.
Some of these stories are fromour tours when we went
throughout the town.
Others are kind of from theinternet Credible sources from
(09:58):
the internet.
But, as always, please takethis with a grain of salt.
And now we go back to thehaunted orphanage, or well, at
least next door to it.
Imagine having a job close to ahaunted place.
Now imagine the activity yourjob would have if it was right
(10:18):
next to the orphanage.
Our story is just that Next tothe orphanage there used to be a
shop and they would stay openuntil about 9, 10 pm every night
.
In one instance a woman let'scall her Mary was walking all
alone, was working all alone inthe store.
(10:40):
Well, mary had just moved toGettysburg and didn't really
have that much of an idea, Likeshe knew about the stories and
stuff, but she just passed themon.
She was just like, okay, yeah, guys, whatever, sure.
So she really had no idea howhaunted the place next door was,
ie the orphanage.
(11:00):
Meryl was closing up the shopto go home one night.
She went to the front door andlocked it, turned the open sign
to closed and pulled the curtaindown.
Past the window, she turnedaround and headed to the office
to count the till, which is thedrawer that she had put there a
(11:26):
few moments prior.
Mary sat down and started tocount some of the money in the
till when she thought she hearda door open to the shop.
Uh, but that was impossiblebecause she had just locked it.
But that was impossible becauseshe had just locked it.
She was retracing her steps inher mind when she heard
footsteps in the shop.
(11:47):
Okay, now that was reallyimpossible, because she
definitely knows she locked thedoor.
None of this is making anysense.
I don't understand, she wasthinking to herself.
She flew up from her officechair and ran to the front area.
She stopped, her eyes went wide.
Nothing, she thought how, how,how is that possible?
(12:12):
That does not make any sense.
There is no way that that ispossible.
She rubbed her eyes.
I must be tired, she thought.
The night after was prettyunremarkable.
However, the door opening andthe steps continued for a few
(12:33):
more of her shifts.
She told her boss, and althoughher boss said he believed her,
there was nothing he could do,which, in his defense, is true
he couldn't do anything aboutthe ghosts.
Well, for the most part, anyway.
The straw that broke her wasthe same events happening,
(12:55):
except one night the events gotworse.
She heard the door slam andfootsteps, just like the other
nights.
Except one night the events gotworse.
She heard the door slam andfootsteps, just like the other
nights, but this time they wereaccompanied by a male voice.
She stopped counting the tilland put the money down.
She went to the entrance areawhere she thought she had heard
(13:16):
the voice, but again, like everyother night before, there was
nothing.
She rolled her eyes and took adeep breath and headed back to
the office.
You have got to be kidding me.
She said.
I just want one night of them, just leaving me alone, have one
regular shift without footstepsand without.
(13:38):
When she got to the office, nothing was.
As she left it.
There was money everywhere.
It was like someone came in andthrew all the money up in the
air.
The safe was open, which, before she left it, was closed.
It was open and all the moneyfrom in there was all over the
floor.
(13:58):
Her chair was pushed all theway back and was tipped over,
and the wheels were stillspinning.
All of the cabinets were openand random objects from inside
were hanging out of the cabinetor somehow hung onto the
cabinet's corner.
She stared in disbelief.
(14:20):
Now if something like thishappened to me, I'd probably be
like what is happening?
Can, can, can, can.
Can you not like I?
I just I just counted thismoney.
Are you gonna count it with me?
Like ghost?
If you're not going to count mymoney with me, please don't
mess up my money.
Okay, deal with cabinets.
The cabinets are fine, you canmess with them, but I just
(14:42):
counted this money and now youtook it all out and spewed it on
the floor and now it's all overthe entire room Like come on,
ghost.
I'd be a little pissed off, butthat's just me.
She took her phone out of herpocket Mary, this is not me and
called her boss.
She quit on the spot and walkedout of the store and to her car
.
She sat and waited for her bossand walked out of the store and
(15:07):
to her car.
She sat and waited for her boss.
Her boss finally came and Marygot out of her car and handed
her boss the keys without sayinga word.
She then got back in her carand drove away, far, far, far
away from the shop and fromGettysburg.
Like I said, I'm not gonna lie,if I was in mary's situation I
might have done the same thing.
Hopefully mary has found a jobthat isn't quite as active and
(15:33):
treats her decently.
I'm not talking about her boss,I'm talking about the actual
building.
I hope the building that she isin.
If she is in a building working, I hope it treats her well
because she deserves it.
You know, we all deserve alittle peace and quiet when
we're working.
(15:53):
For the last story forGettysburg, at least for now.
We might go back at some pointin the future.
I don't know yet, but it takesplace in the orphanage.
I don't know yet, but it takesplace in the orphanage.
It happened on a tour and we'regoing to call this big,
muscular guy Charlie.
So he's big, muscular and abiker and he has long hair and
(16:24):
today he has decided to put hishair in two pigtails, one on
either side, and he also hasthem braided.
So Charlie and his family areon the orphanage tour and it's
just like a normal tour, kind oflike ours.
Nothing paranormal happened, atleast not yet.
Then the tour group descendsdown into the dungeon and things
(16:45):
get a little strange.
Charlie stands next to one ofthe beams that are holding the
roof up.
He leans against it and he'sjust looking around the room
examining everything the stonewalls, the benches on all the
sides and the tour guide isexplaining more of what the
(17:07):
children endure at the orphanageby Rosa Carmichael, and Charlie
feels something tug on his leftbraid.
He looks down and nothing'sthere.
He's like okay, that was alittle weird and shrugs it off.
This happens again, but thistime he looks around the room to
(17:28):
see if anyone noticed anything.
And of course, why would anyonenotice anything?
They're all enamored by thetour guide.
She's talking about Rosa andwhat she did to those children
and it wasn't.
You know, it's not a very goodexperience for those poor
children, so naturally no onesees anything.
(17:51):
Of course, the tour guide askedthe group, like ours.
She asked the group to turn thelights off and they all agreed,
exactly like our tour, whichwas very interesting.
The room got dark and quiet, didn't have me or anyone else
talking to the ghosts this time.
(18:12):
I still would have loved totalk to Tommy, but you know he
just didn't want to talk andthat is okay.
I forgive you, tommy, don't youworry, you could hear a pin
drop.
Everyone looked at the room andnothing was moving.
After a few moments, the tourguide turned the lights back on
and Charlie jumped Stop pullingmy hair.
He turned around and everyonelooked at him.
(18:35):
They're like what, what is goingon with this dude?
Like, why is he?
What's going on?
So this man, charlie, nothing, nothing spooks Charlie.
He doesn't believe in theparanormal.
That's why he went on this tripto prove that stuff like this
didn't exist.
And he wanted to bring hisfamily with him to be like guys.
(18:58):
I don't know what you thinkthese people are trying to fool
you with, but it doesn't existat all.
Zero percent.
I don't know what, how gullibleyou people are, but it doesn't
exist.
It was to prove that the stuffdidn't exist.
Charlie calmed down and thetour continued.
(19:22):
Calm down and the tourcontinued.
After Charlie's yell, all theactivity stopped.
It was kind of like a light bulbmoment, except instead of
turning the light bulb on, youturn the light bulb off.
Unfortunately.
I'm sure everyone else wouldhave loved to have an experience
, but Charlie was.
You know, I assume Charlie waslike not having it that day.
(19:45):
The tour was finally over andcharlie walked up to the tour
guide you in this place hementioned he motioned over to
the orphanage have really turneda non-believer into a believer.
That was such a weird andstrange experience.
It was so weird that from thatpoint on the tour guide made
(20:09):
sure to tell the strange storyfor years to come.
I actually heard this story inour tour when it was happening
and I couldn't believe that thisbig, bulky biker dude with
pigtails and braided hair that'snot the funny part, I just find
(20:30):
him big and bulky biker dudewas afraid of a ghost.
Like he wasn't afraid, he justdidn't know what was happening.
And I can't blame him at allfor it, because I also would
have loved to have someone pullmy pigtails, but I don't have
that long of hair like thisgentleman Charlie did, or like
(20:52):
my friend Jane did.
I'm sure if we hung aroundthere a little more her hair
would have been pulled, becauseshe does have long ponytails and
braided hair, which Iunfortunately do not have.
Me and Emily both do not havethat.
So I hope that you have enjoyedthe first few episodes of the
(21:14):
podcast and Gettysburg.
I hope that if you have thechance that you go and visit.
Regardless of ghosts oranything paranormal, it is a
very pretty place.
I recommend the chocolate shopbecause it's got ice cream.
I mean, who doesn't love icecream?
I recommend the Christmas treeshop because it just makes you
feel all warm and tingly inside.
I recommend all the mom and popshops there the little place.
(21:38):
We got coffee early in themornings, all of it.
Just the people were so niceand friendly and they would love
striking up conversations andit was just a really genuine
experience.
Even if it wasn't for theparanormal, it was a really nice
experience.
The campground that we stayed atwas absolutely phenomenal.
(22:00):
I just loved it, minus theacorns.
I mean, the acorns took alittle bit of getting used to,
you know, crashing on ourceiling every night, but for the
most part we did get used to itand we were able to sleep.
We had a blast, and I hope youguys did too.
I don't know what story is next.
(22:21):
To be quite honest with you,I'm gonna do some research and I
will let you guys know.
But if you have stories likethe ones I told you today or the
ones I've been telling you, please don't hesitate to write
to me.
I'm always open to either aparagraph or a sentence or
(22:44):
anything.
I just love talking and makingnew friends.
