When a quarter tossed in a fountain brings Jaye face-to-face with local legend Millie Marcus (played with Southern charm by Golden Girls' Rue McClanahan), she inadvertently uncovers a decades-old deception at the heart of Niagara Falls history. The Barrel Bear muse leads Jaye down a rabbit hole of mistaken identities, exposing that Millie wasn't actually the first American woman to survive going over the falls in a barrel – that honor belongs to the flannel-wearing, no-nonsense Vivian (Oscar winner Louise Fletcher).

What follows is a brilliantly crafted exploration of identity and the fear of being trapped. Written by television heavyweights Tim Minear and Bryan Fuller, the episode masterfully parallels Jaye's anxiety about her future with the lives of both Millie and Vivian – one living a glamorous lie, the other unable to escape the shadow of her stolen accomplishment. Meanwhile, Jaye finds herself at odds with Mahandra, who's determined to preserve the myth that defines their hometown, revealing deeper tensions in their friendship as Jaye struggles to share her supernatural reality.

Eric's storyline adds another dimension as he grapples with calls from his past life, eventually making peace with his new identity in a symbolic gesture at the falls. The episode delivers some of the series' sharpest dialogue ("How long have you been using the Republican Party as a lesbian dating service?") alongside genuinely poignant moments, culminating in a funeral scene that cleverly resolves the central conflict while honoring both women's stories.

Watching this episode, you'll understand why many fans consider it one of Wonderfalls' strongest offerings. Its exploration of authenticity versus pretense, combined with stellar guest performances and meaningful character development, showcases everything that made this short-lived series so special. Episode seven of season onebarrel bear barrel bear.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
I like the barrel bear.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
I was hoping he'd come back around barrel bear
barrel bear is is has beenaround for a while, yeah, and,
interestingly enough, has spoken.
It's not even like.
This is the first time thatBarrel Bear has spoken to.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Jay, I think this is the third time.
Right, at least the third time, because it was very early on
Barrel Bear makes an appearancein almost every episode.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
I think Crime Dog it didn't.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
but If they're not in Wonderfalls, he's not going to
Well, but she has one in hertrailer now too.
Well, she does now.
Well, she did a couple episodesago, did she?
Yeah, he was part of, wasn't healso singing about the bottles
of beer on the wall?
but remember that was the oneepisode that was filmed last got

(05:40):
it but played early, so thatmay be why the barrel bear is
there, you know the continuityis I was reading an AV club
review where they talked abouthow, like nice, where they
talked about how it didn'tmatter that they were airing

(06:02):
them out of order because all ofthe initial episodes were like
standalones, and I'm like, howdo you figure?

Speaker 1 (06:11):
wow, that's because I disagree exactly.
Av club let's, let's, let's getthe people from av club on here
.
Let's have, let's have a groupdiscussion.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Let's fight them, let's, we will fight you.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
We are's fight them, we will fight you.
We are calling you out.
Av Club.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Wait, let me find the person's name.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
All right, here we go .
While you do that, I'm going tostart the introduction of
episode seven, barrel Bear.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Okay, I'm going to pet Mulder here because he's
standing next to me, looking forattention, either Chapel or
Chappelle, I'm coming for you.
Excellent you, I'm coming foryou excellent, you've been
called out Les the last time Leswrote for AV Club was in 2021,
so I don't know.
I'm going to google Les and seewhere he is now please do so

(07:01):
anyway.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
So this episode, barrel Bear, which is the 7th
episode in the series, notnecessarily filmed that way, or
this one, again, not aired on UStelevision.
Jamie Babbitt is the director.
Interestingly enough, jamieBabbitt also directed nine

(07:25):
episodes of only murders in thebuilding.
Oh, I know, I, I know that show.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yes, exactly I love that show.
Uh, I, I'm sorry, I wascorrected.
Les chapel was still writingfor av club in 2024 oh, okay,
but that's the only place I canfind him, because that also
seems to be the name of anEnglish footballer and manager
born in 1947.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Fascinating.
Maybe they're one and the same.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Also a musical artist , second career.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
So this episode written by one of your favorite
people, tim Minear, yeah, andBrian Fuller, huh.
So this is like an OG kind ofepisode written.
Maybe that's why I liked it somuch, because it was written by

(08:20):
those two and we talked aboutthe guest stars yeah, rue McC.
About the guest stars yeah, rueMcClanahan.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Yes, and Louise Fletcher.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
You may recognize the name Rue McClanahan, Not only
from her starring role in thisepisode of Wonderfalls which was
probably the pinnacle of hercareer certainly not as blanche
devereaux no, no, that was amuch lesser known.
Much, I mean hard, I mean comeon who's who's watched that show

(08:58):
golden?
Come on who's who's seen goldenGirls?
Okay, everybody, literallyeveryone.
Literally everyone who does notlove Ruma Clannahan?
I mean, blanche is justprobably one of my favorites.
Yeah, I mean, betty White isBetty White.
Sure, she's in another strata, but Ruma Clannahan is definitely

(09:22):
funny.
And, yes, louise Fletcher, alsoknown as Nurse Ratched yes From
One.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
And not just from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Oscar winner Oscar winner who struggled in her
career, after One Flew Over theCuckoo's Nest because she was so
convincing as Nurse Ratchedthat she was typecast yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
I loved her in this episode, as did I.
I thought she was fantasticAgreed, so we will get into that
a little bit more.
So let's talk about thesynopsis.
What is the story of thisepisode?

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Well, Blanche Devereaux, whose name is
actually.
Wait, what was her last name?
It's Millie Marcus, millie,marcus, millie.
Marcus, now that's alliterationyes, millie Marcus Um.
She is known as the firstperson who went over the falls

(10:25):
in a barrel, the first woman whowent over the first American
woman to go over the falls in abarrel over the barrel and live
very important.
Very important.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
That is the punchline asterisk to that, to that, to
that, uh, uh, that claim to fame.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
So she becomes the focus of Jay's good doing, good
deeding.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Deeding done, good deeding done, good deedy do
Zippity doo da Anyway.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Should we record these after work?
Maybe not, we haven't even beendrinking.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
I know my God yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
So she's outside, she throws a quarter into the
fountain.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Yes, she Return it to her.
Or bring it?
Yeah, return it to her.
Is that what?
Yeah, I think so, think so.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Barrel bear says yeah , so of course she assumes she's
returning the quarter toblanche and she goes out and
pulls the quarter out of thefountain yes gets a ticket and
then, and then, blanchedisappears.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Yep, and we're just going to call her blanche for oh
, she's definitely just blanchejust blanche.
Yeah, um so, but yeah, blancheis nowhere to be found after jay
reaches in and books out thequarter, pulls out the quarter,
but then she yes, she gets aticket for for doing that.
So is that when she becausethis was one of my favorite

(12:01):
moments Is that when she pushesthe barrel bear into the
fountain?

Speaker 2 (12:06):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
And you just hear the barrel bear gurgling.
Yes, she's talking, Poor thing.
She's so frustrated with thebarrel bear that she's.
She knows she's trying to dogood, but then she gets punished
for it by by getting a ticket?

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Yep, she's getting a fine.
Yes.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
And that one that nicely wraps up at the end of
the episode as well, which Ithought was good.
Yep, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Getting another ticket.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Glittering, so it's interesting.
So the whole kind of storylineto this episode is that Millie
Rue, Blanche, all those namesBlanche is the one claiming to
be the first American woman togo over the falls and live.
And everyone believes that to bethe truth, everyone.

(13:01):
Because because they, they, they, they show the whole
backstory as to what happened,um, what?
What happened to cause that?
Um, deception?
Yep, but there's another womanwho claims that she is actually
the woman who went over in thebarrel and lived.

(13:21):
Yes, so, and that's LouiseFletcher's character.
So, so nurse ratchet goes overthe falls.
So now they're just nurseratchet and Blanche Uh correct.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Nurse ratchet goes over the falls, yes, while she's
recovering from having goneover the falls and lived and
lived, uh, they swap her with.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Blanche with Blanche, and blanche then stands out
there and and goes on to take, takes off her bathing cap,
unfurls her luxurious hair andand everyone cheers, yeah that
that she has made it over thefalls and lived.
Yep, and so she.
So she's been riding this storyfor her life Like this is her

(14:08):
identity.
Yep, there was really nothingelse past this.
This is just who she was.
Now she's kind of faded out ofthe limelight.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Right.
No one really knows or careswho she is or what she has done
knows or cares who she is or orwhat she has done, and so jay
thinks that what she has torestore is her fame.
So she sets up a book signingat wonderfalls well, it's not a
book signing, because there's no, oh no, that's right, it's an
autograph, a photo.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
Autograph photos, yes um, no one's interested, no
one's interested.
So so let's talk about the, themain storyline here.
So let's break it down.
Um, break it down, break itdown.
Oh so it was.
When was it?

(14:58):
When was the the altercation, the, the, the the conflict?
Was it when they were at theCLAW setting up for the CLAW
meeting?

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Concerned Ladies of America West.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Concerned Ladies of America West East Coast Chapter,
east Coast Chapter.
So Darren and Sharon are bothmembers of the Concerned Ladies
of the American West East CoastChapter.
I think it's just of AmericaWest Of America West, yeah, yeah
yeah, not of the American West, correct, of America West,

(15:32):
america West Got it, becausethat's why I think it's just
Concerned Ladies America WestGot it.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
Concerned Ladies of America West.
Concerned Ladies of America.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
West East Coast chapter.
Got it, got it now Okay, so,anyway.
So I think that's when Vivianshows back up, nurse Ratched
shows up and starts raising aruckus.
Isn't, it is that when she comesbecause she said she wasn't

(16:03):
going to buy a ticket to theevent- yep so she, she raises a
ruckus saying you know how dareyou know, I'm really the one
that went over the falls, and sothis really causes kind of a
rift between Jay and Mahandra, right and Eric too.

(16:26):
It kind of gets tied into theit's drawn into the whole thing
as well.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Yeah, well, I mean, eric seems interested in
anything that'll pass the timesure?

Speaker 1 (16:36):
um, so so jay and mahondra are on opposite sides.
Jay is trying to restore the?
Um, what's the word?
I'm looking for the, the memoryof, kind of restore the memory
of Vivian, nurse ratchet to, to,to get her story out there,

(16:59):
that she's actually the true, true hero.
Yeah, heroine, she's trying towrite a wrong.
She is.
She's trying to write a wrongand just and fix history and
make people aware of the factthat a nurse ratchet is the one
that went over the falls, thefirst American woman to go over
the falls and live.
And Mahondra is determined topreserve the myth that it was

(17:27):
Blanche who went over the fallsand lived.
So they're fighting back andforth trying to do this and
mayhem ensues.
Blanche finally figures thatshe's going to.
She determines that even at herage she is going to go over the

(17:51):
falls and kind kind of make ittrue that she's.
She went over the falls and andlived yeah, except then she
doesn't, then she doesn't.
The barrel slipped.
Because the barrel slipped andthe barrel went over and they
assumed she was in there, jay, because jay and nurse ratchet
saw the barrel all broken up andassumed that Blanche went over

(18:15):
and has perished.
And this brings me back to it'sa little piece of trivia-ish
sort of thing, but what Ithought was really funny.
Did you pick up that Mahondrasaid that her father was the one
responsible for fishing corpsesout of the river after they've
gone over the falls?

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
I was like that's a funny tidbit, like that's a
funny like character developmenttidbit that like I just really
enjoyed because that's the kindof stuff that I like.
I like this, this weird kind ofcharacter, um, but you, you've
never met the father rightyou've never met mahandra's
father, um, but now all you knowabout him is that he was the.
He's the, the fisher of corpsesout of the river after they've

(18:59):
gone over the falls.
Great, great little, greatlittle tidbit of information, um
, what are, what are some ofthem?
So that that's the main plotline what, what?
So?
What are?
What are your thoughts on onhow that, how that played out?

Speaker 2 (19:16):
I enjoyed that.
Um, you know they have blanchecome swanning in, yes, every bit
the southern charm like she's.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
She's very, very it's .
It's like she's playing blanche, it's like she's playing
blanche.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Is she's not as saucy as?
Blanche no but she's still acelebrity in her own.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
She's a legend in her own mind.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
Right, I feel like she's like a silent movie star,
yeah, like kind of kind of thing, like that's and she has that
kind of what did they?
Keep referring to.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
Vivian, as like flannel.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Well, she's the flannel, she's got the man shirt
and man pants and baggy men's,baggy men's pants or something
like that.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Oh my God, um, yeah, yeah, I liked.
I liked the story, I liked thewhole switcheroo that happened
and, um, I liked the parallelthat they drew to Vivian kind of
being stuck in Niagara fallsand Jay's fear of that same
thing happening to her Right, which I think is part of why
even though it's what the museswant, it's why Jay goes so

(20:22):
hardcore toward trying to helpVivian get out, because that's
the life she fears she'll have.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
Vivian.
Vivian's kind of been trappedin in Niagara Falls because
Falls, because of this, and Ithink Jay sees a lot of herself
in Vivian, yeah, and, like yousaid, that's kind of her
motivation for helping her getout of town.
Yeah, which I thought wasinteresting, because then it

(20:51):
also ties into Eric as well.
Yes, yeah, which I thought wasinteresting, because then it
also ties into Eric as well, because, because they talk about
Eric, new Eric and old Eric, right.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Eric, ignoring every phone call that's coming in.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
From his old boss, from his family, from his wife.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Well, he's not ignoring them.
Mahondra was answering thephone.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Mahondra was answering taking messages.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
It's like your mother called.
She's very concerned about you.
So Mahondra is answering hisphone but it ties back into Eric
because they talk about him nowbeing he's got like a new start

(21:37):
in Wonder Falls in NiagaraFalls, right, but he's like my
wife picked this place, right.
So it's almost like he'strapped there as well, right
there as well, right, like he's.
He kind of got abandoned thereby his, his wife and the fooling

(21:59):
around with the Bellman, yeah, and so now he's trapped as well,
but he's he's struggling tryingto figure out which life he
wants.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
Yeah, and I think, I think Jay's trying to figure out
the same thing.
Sure, and I think even Mahindra, yeah, and I think I think
Jay's trying to figure out thesame thing.
Sure, and I think even Mahindra, yeah, she likes it.
They're better than Jay.

Speaker 1 (22:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
But I still don't think it's necessarily where she
wants to be longterm.
It's just where she is now.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
Right.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
And kind of where she's always been Sure.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
She's kind of the townie of.

Speaker 2 (22:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
And she's never I don't think she's ever really
left.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Yeah, yeah Because she makes the references to
Dartmouth and Jay having gottenout.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
Dartmouth, wasn't it Dartmouth?
Brown Brown Jay, yes.

Speaker 2 (22:49):
Brown, can we do this all in one word Dartmouth.

Speaker 1 (22:54):
Nardog.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
Circle Center Ball Yep and we've gone off the rails
.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
We've gone right to Cable Guy, mm-hmm, yes, anyway,
gone off the rails, we've goneright to cable guy.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
Yes, Anyway, off the rails again some more.

Speaker 1 (23:21):
Yes, so I think, I think a lot of people are.
It's.
It's fascinating because a lotof people are dealing with the
same emotion, same issue, in indifferent ways.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
And it's really interesting to see how all that,
how they all kind of have aresolution to, to that, yeah,
and yet, which I thought wasreally good- Rue.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Millie Blanche has come back to Niagara Falls
because she doesn't have thatplace in the world, right, so
the it's interesting to see thedichotomies.
I do think, and probablybecause this was written by Tim
Minear and Brian Fuller, it's abetter written episode than a

(24:08):
lot of the others.
Yeah, um, and you do see kindof the duality of like.
Mahandra loves the history ofNiagara Falls.
That's why she's so obsessedwith Millie and what Millie kind
of represents, whereas Jay isjust looking to escape it and
she can't.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
I think some of it with Mahandra is that she's just
being contrary to Jay Justbecause, again, because it comes
up right at the very end of theepisode that Jay doesn't really
open up to her anymore.

Speaker 2 (24:49):
Which is and we talked about this a little in
the last episode heartbreaking, because Jay finally does say,
okay, you know how I told youthat the inanimate objects are
talking to me and they are, andthey tell me to do stuff, and
blah, blah, blah.
And Mahandra's like, well, I'llbe here when you're ready to
tell me, right, like it was kindof.
And also this the one thingthis episode really lacked was

(25:11):
Aaron.
I agree.
The one thing this episodereally lacked was Aaron, I agree
, but I think it just wasinteresting.
And again, this is a duality.
It's not necessarily brought upin this episode, but I think
it's interesting to look at that.
Aaron just so wholeheartedlybelieves her, but it's because
of something within him, right, and Mahondra just doesn't.

(25:32):
And again, I think that's ofsomething within him, right, um,
and Mahandra just doesn't.
And again, I think that'sprobably something within her
that just, I think she's almosthappier hanging onto the idea
that, like there's somethingthat Jay isn't telling her,
right, rather than I think, theconcept that Jay is changing,
because there's a lot ofreferences to like when did Jay

(25:54):
become the good person?
And Mahandra is like the badperson that Jay used to be or
the disaffected person that Jayused to be.

Speaker 1 (26:02):
Interesting.
Hmm, yeah, I mean it's, itreally is interesting, I think
the the relationship betweenthose two, because I mean some
episodes of Mahandra hasn't evenbeen there, yeah, so so it's
it's interesting to to see kindof that expanded relationship

(26:23):
which I thought, which I thoughtwas really good.
But I don't know, I think, youknow, I, I think Mahindra is
kind of happy with her life.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
Ish, I don, I think Mahandra is kind of happy with
her life.
Ish, I don't think she's ahundred percent happy.
I think she wonders what therecould be yes, sorry, yes, I
think she wonders what therecould be for her outside of
Niagara Falls.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
I think she's well.
It's interesting because she'sseeing.
She's seeing all these peoplethat have left Wonder Falls and
have come or Niagara I keepcalling it Wonder Falls, keep
leaving Niagara Falls and comingback to Niagara Falls.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
Right.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
And maybe she's, maybe she's wondering what's
like you said, what's out therefor for?

Speaker 2 (27:14):
her.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
Right, like what?
What?
What would happen if she leftNiagara Falls?
And maybe she's afraid to?
Maybe she's afraid to leave,it's safe there and maybe, and
maybe that's why she's sodetermined in saving the history
, even though it's wrong.

Speaker 2 (27:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:31):
Because that's, that's all she knows, like
that's, that's's, that's hercomfort zone, yep, and so she's.
If she sees that fall apart, then what does that mean for her
right?
So it's a big crisis of for forher.
Yeah, interesting, um, what are, what are the subplots of this?

(27:54):
I think eric and the phonecalls yes, eric, and the phone
calls um love that band, I thinkanother one, welcome, eric, and
the phone calls um to thesecond stage.
Everybody, eric and the phonecalls.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
The whole claw.
Thing.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
The claw.
Yeah Well, the claw, yes, theclaw thing I thought was so
funny.
It was just again, just anotherbizarre little tidbit.
Oh and then, well, becausewe're probably going to talk
about it in the funniest things, yep, about using the Republican
Party as a lesbian datingservice.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
Yeah.
So Jay says how long have youbeen using the Republican Party
as a lesbian dating service?
Yeah.
So Jay says how long have youbeen using the Republican party
as a lesbian dating?

Speaker 1 (28:40):
service Just great.
Yup, Such a, that's such a goodline, Again, again, I think I
think the writing of thisepisode was really solid um
which was good.
I don't.
I don't think there was muchtroublesome.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
They were calling her flannel granny.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
Flannel granny Wow.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Lovely.
There was not a lot ofcontroversy in this episode.

Speaker 1 (29:08):
No, there was nothing that I found like downright
insulting.

Speaker 2 (29:09):
And there's been something in almost every
episode up until now, so goodjob, oh okay, well, I'll talk
about this when we get tofavorite Okay.
So good job, oh okay.
Well, I'll talk about this whenwe get to favorite Okay.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
We'll get to that.
Yeah, I really liked.
I really liked how the episodewrapped up because it tied.

Speaker 2 (29:26):
That was very yeah.
I was actually initiallyconfused about what they were
doing.
Were you, yeah, yeah, what soduring the funeral?
So should we just talk aboutwhat it?
Is first, and then I'll tellyou what I so they so millie,
slash rue right, slash blancheum ends up dying of, I guess, a

(29:53):
heart attack a stroke something.

Speaker 1 (29:54):
It's never not too late, it's not too.

Speaker 2 (29:55):
It's never too late, it's not too late, it's never
too late.
And then she just keels over.

Speaker 1 (30:01):
And they have.
It's never too late.
Because she because, becauseMillie's character is going to
expose the truth she's going togo on this tour with Vivian and
tell the truth and tell thetruth Right, because she's
saying it's not too.
She has this.
She had this kind of epiphanywhen, when the barrel went over
and she was standing on the sideof the falls, realized exactly

(30:22):
what Vivian had actually doneand how truly important that was
.
So she was going to let theworld know that Vivian was the
one that really went over thefalls and lived.
And again, it's not too late,it's not too late.
And then she just keels overand dies before she can go in

(30:42):
and rewrite history.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
So then we have a funeral scene.
Yes, there is an urn up at thefront.
Yes, there is.
There is a pastor, preacher, priest, whoever talking about
the deceased.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
And then they reveal that they are burying or having
this funeral for vivian, vivianso funeral is for vivian and I
was just super confused untilvivian then came out looking all
glamorous, right um, dressed asmillie exactly, and goes to go

(31:20):
on tour.
And then the driver realizes ohmy goodness, you're the one who
went over the falls the firstwoman to go over the falls and
live and asks for an autographand she starts to sign vivian
and she's like, oh, I'm gonnahave to work on that that's
right.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
She goes out as millie.
Yeah, so it's fascinating, because I love Jay is just like.
She's like yes, I know you haveto go out and lie, so you're
going out and saying that you'rethe woman that went over the
falls and lived, which you are,but you're saying it as Millie.
So you're not she's like.
I know it's messy, but it worksyeah.

(32:04):
But I love the tie-up at the endwhen they try to figure out
what to do with the ashes.
And I thought it was reallytouching because Millie finally
got to go over the falls in abarrel, even though it's the
barrel bear's barrel.
She's dead at this point, butshe gets to go over the barrel,
except maybe for an elbow.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
She spilled some of the ashes on the register.
So maybe everything but anelbow, that's right.

Speaker 1 (32:30):
That's right, I forgot.
And then so they have thatmoment, so they tie up Millie's
story, giving her some closureeven in death, giving her some
closure even in death.
Eric has the epiphany that heis now Eric, not then Eric,
right.
And so now Eric is going tostay here and be happy and live

(32:52):
his life.
And he declares that he likes,he says he likes a lot of things
.
And then he says to Jay, jay,and I like you.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Yeah, and he flings his phone into the falls.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
Yes, as it.
As it's ringing, yeah, Maybethey'll call back, but I love, I
love how Jay goes.
I didn't laugh at when whenEric tells tells her that he
likes her.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:16):
So it's like.
It's like I really am lookingforward to seeing where that
goes.
But they tied up.
So they tied up Vivian, theytied up Millie, they tied up
Eric, yep, and then they kind oftie up Jay and Mahondra in that

(33:36):
moment that you were talkingabout earlier when Mahondra was
like you know, I'm really hurt, that really hurt that you used
to tell me everything and nowyou've been so kind of shut down
and so then Jay just lets itall out there.
She's like remember when I toldyou that wax lion was talking

(33:58):
to me?
It really talks to me.
And, as you said, mahandra waslike okay, when you're ready to
tell me the truth, I'll be here.

Speaker 2 (34:05):
Yeah, the dismissal is just heartbreaking.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
Well, she's used to Jane not being open and honest.
I guess, and so she's like youjust tell me something so absurd
.
It's like clearly you don'twant to tell me, like, so I
think I think that's kind of howhow Mahindra picks takes it is
that okay, you made up somethingso absurd that I know you

(34:30):
really, you really aren't readyto tell me yet.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:34):
Well, you didn't just say I'm not ready to tell you
or anything like that.
You you like, you just want.
You went all the way in theopposite direction and and did
that.
So that's that's how I kind oftook it.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
All right, so let's talk about.
You want to talk about yourfavorite moments?
Yes, okay, hit me with yourfavorite moments.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
Okay, so Millie doing the photo signing?
Yes, this is sad.
This is sadder than that hookerwe saw getting beat up by that
other hooker.
She says at least a hookerfight would draw a crowd.

Speaker 1 (35:07):
I wrote that down somewhere myself.
I thought that was such a greatone.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
That was really funny when she threatens the wax lion
she'll stick a wick in his butt, Can you?

Speaker 1 (35:18):
say make me a candle.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
That was good.
Uh, I had the thing about theabout, uh, mahondra's father
fishing the corpses.
Yeah, that was right that was areally interesting tidbit I did
also um, like when Alec toldJay he could make sure there's
always a place for her at winterfalls.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
And she's like, oh no , I love.
So one of one of my things wasI love when, uh, when Millie
right near, the right, near theend, right before she dies, she
goes.
What made me think I could jump, jump the falls.
And then from outside you hearMahandra go a bottle of Merlot,

(36:11):
that sounds about right.
Yeah, that's fair, I mean, every, every stupid thing usually
starts with, with withsignificant drinking, so so that
was that was pretty par for thecourse.
Like I said, I loved when shekicked with significant drinking
, so so that was, that waspretty par for the course.
Um, like I said, I loved whenshe kicked, kicked the barrel
bear into the, into the wishingwell, yes, um, and he's, he's
gurgling as he, as he's fallingin um that one.

(36:32):
Yeah, and how long have youbeen using the Republican party
as a lesbian dating service?

Speaker 2 (36:41):
Another one of my favorite lines the concerned
ladies of America West East.

Speaker 1 (36:44):
Coast chapter just made me giggle Claw and, like I
said, darren and Sharon alwaysmaking the little hand claw
gesture that's like, like that'stheir little thing to each
other, like I wish that they hadunderstood what they wanted the
family dynamics to be likeearlier on.

Speaker 2 (37:01):
Yeah, because I think they could have done a better
job from the outset of makingthem a tight knit but
dysfunctional family.
Yes, instead of just being sokind of initially unkind and
dismissive.
Yes, about Jay, I agree.
Yeah, because there are partsnow where, like, I've really

(37:21):
come to like Darren he obviouslyloves his kids.
I agree Because there are partsnow where I've really come to
like Darren.
He obviously loves his kids.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
Darren's been a really good character.

Speaker 2 (37:28):
And Karen, she puts on airs and oh, she's not going
to write a book with Millie, butshe does love her kids.
She had the meeting.
I mean, she took the meeting.
She didn't have to do that.
So I feel like they've done amuch better job in writing.
The family.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (37:46):
But it took, I'd say, a solid five episodes to get
there, Right, and that'sunfortunate, because that's
right when they canceled it.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
Right Now, I feel like the episodes
post-cancellation have been farmore solid and consistent than
what you saw on television.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
Yeah, I don't know how they chose those as the ones
to air, especially when theywere out of order.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
Right, yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
I was watching these episodes on YouTube.
Episodes on YouTube and in thepreviously on for muffin Buffalo
.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
They showed the scene of Jay and Eric at the falls
from barrel pair.
Oh did they?
Yeah, oh, wow.
So I feel like this was anotherone where they were swapped
around.

Speaker 1 (38:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
Um, interesting, I'm pretty sure, because I was like
wait, didn't I already see thispreviously on um, so I was
confused, but I wish they hadn'tdone so much episode shuffling
with this series.
I feel like it might have donebetter if they hadn't I agree.

Speaker 1 (38:56):
So what about this episode?
Worked what didn't work, whatdidn't work, what didn't work?
I think we talked a lot aboutwhat worked.
Yeah, I think we've alreadytalked about that the family
dynamic.
I think the writing has gottenmuch tighter and consistent.

Speaker 2 (39:08):
Yeah, I actually really liked, I think, all of
this.
I think the what didn't workfor me I already talked about,
which is the way Mahandrareacted to her.

Speaker 1 (39:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (39:17):
I just don't think it's.
I don't think it's in character.
I understand she's hurt.
I understand she feels acertain way about Jay, but, like
I don't know if, my best friendturned to me and said hey, I've
been hearing these likeinanimate objects talking to me
and they were like dead seriousabout it, I'd listen.

(39:38):
Right, and I mean they've knowneach other a long time, right.
We're supposed to think.
They went to school together, they grew up together, whatever.
Why wouldn't you give them thebenefit of the doubt?

Speaker 1 (39:52):
Give her the benefit of the doubt, like I said to me
I see it as it's something soabsurd that it sounds like she's
.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
It sounds like she is just making something up to
avoid the topic.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
Exactly, yeah, exactly right.
That that's how I see it.
Like I'm just I'm going to tellyou the most absurd thing in
the world, yeah, and it'd belike, okay, you're not ready to
tell me, right, like there's,there's, there's, there's,

(40:26):
there's, there's, no, there's noold jay, kind of normal jay and
and between there's got to besomething between the, the,
between the truth, or what wasnormal jay and what is jay
saying?
Animals are talking to her, right, like there, there's got
to be something, some truth, inbetween those two.
So I think that's's how shesees it.
It's just, you're telling mesomething so absurd that it's
just the truth is somewhere inthere, but you're not ready to

(40:47):
tell me yet, right?
But she actually is telling herthe truth, yeah, 100%.
And that's why it's like Ithink it's just too much to
handle.
I mean, aliens exist, but a lotof people aren't ready to hear
that.
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
Obviously.

Speaker 1 (41:02):
Obviously, that's just facts.
Clearly, I've seen enoughepisodes of X-Files to know that
aliens exist.
Please, anyway, all right then, any last thoughts on this
episode of Barrel Bear?
Any last thoughts on thisepisode of Barrel Bear?

Speaker 2 (41:21):
I thought this was quite a casting coup and
certainly better than Eddie.
What's his name?
Eddie K.

Speaker 1 (41:29):
Eddie K Thomas.
Yeah, rue McClanahan.
Louise Fletcher.
Louise Fletcher.

Speaker 2 (41:34):
This is like an Oscar winner.

Speaker 1 (41:36):
Yeah, and a Golden Girl, mm-hmm.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
My God, this is like like this is some serious, like
I was delighted to see roommcclanahan.
That's some legit casting itreally was um.

Speaker 1 (41:52):
I mean, we had, uh, what's, what's her name?

Speaker 2 (41:55):
um carrie preston which, which who's a great
actress great actress.

Speaker 1 (41:59):
she probably wasn't as well known at the time.
No, definitely not, but thosetwo should have been.

Speaker 2 (42:04):
Yeah, for sure, oh, absolutely.
I mean, this was years past.

Speaker 1 (42:06):
One Flew.

Speaker 2 (42:07):
Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Golden Girls.

Speaker 1 (42:09):
That's why I loved Pushing Daisies with Swoozie
Kurtz.
And who was the other one Ican't remember.
I can't think of her name.
I'm going to look it up rightnow, so bear with me.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
Okay, so I'll just keep talking while you do that.
Yep, and I mean, you know youalso had Christian Chenoweth,
who is basically just Broadwayroyalty and was at that point
too.

Speaker 1 (42:30):
No, you're absolutely right.
Yeah, I mean, you had such agreat cast.
I mean Kai I mean Kai McBridewas on.
Oh gosh, yeah, love him.
Susie Kurtz, christianChristian channel with.
Um well, who was the other?
Ellen green.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (42:52):
Yes, she has some fantastic actors, like on that
show Um.

Speaker 2 (43:01):
I mean, she was Audrey, yes, in the film
adaptation of little shop ofhorrors.
She is amazing.

Speaker 1 (43:11):
She is amazing, they all are amazing.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
I mean one of my favorite episodes of pushing
daisies, and now we've justgotten to another Brian Fuller
show.
But is the one where they're inthe car singing Birdhouse in
your Soul Like come on?

Speaker 1 (43:29):
I know Any parting thoughts for our audience of a
few.
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (43:37):
A handful.

Speaker 1 (43:38):
Thank you to all of you who are listening.
We really appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (43:41):
Yeah, seriously, I know we tease, but we love we
tease, but love.

Speaker 1 (43:48):
I don't think I have anything else.
No, Again, the episodes.
I think it was reallyinteresting.
It was interesting enough,motherfucker, interestingly
enough, motherfucker.
What I find interesting is thatthe episodes that aired were
really inconsistent and reallychoppy.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
And they started to really pick up steam afterwards.
If the show had been given achance, oh well, let's give it a
thumbs up, thumbs down.
I think I know what both of usare doing.
I think we're definitely bigthumbs up on this episode, so
and I think I said this a fewepisodes ago.

Speaker 1 (44:26):
Yes, I, I think the show is just generally better
when it does include wonderfalls yes like jay in her
natural habitat, which is rightnow wonder falls correct I agree
, yeah, when they try to do likeother things like that, like
the crime dog episode was alittle, was a little, all over
the place, yeah when they don'tgo to wonderfalls at all.

Speaker 2 (44:49):
I feel like the episodes suffer for it.

Speaker 1 (44:51):
Yeah, I agree again, again.
I mean, that's your, that'syour home base.
You, I mean, kind of want tostick with that, yeah, which I,
which I think they should haveand they're doing now.
So again, like I said, I thinkit's getting much better Agreed.
All right.
All right, then, wonderful.
