Hij kende een jeugd vol verwaarlozing en onveiligheid. Hij zocht een thuis bij defensie en ontwikkelde zich telkens verder totdat hij behoorde tot een elite groep mannen dat wereldwijd de meest gevaarlijke missies mag volbrengen. Vanuit huis uit leerde hij al dat hij altijd zelf zijn problemen mocht oplossen, dat hij er alleen voor stond, en dat bleek een geweldige eigenschap te zijn bij de Special Forces. Analyseren, anticiperen, en actie ondernemen. In zijn werk zag hij de meest gruwelijke dingen, maar nu dat hij gestopt is met zijn werk komt hij er achter hoe groot het trauma uit zijn jeugd is dat hij met zich meedraagt. Rene wil graag zijn verhaal vertellen over zijn jeugd, zijn trauma's, maar vooral ook over zijn mentale welzijn. Hij heeft pas sinds een paar jaar geleerd om te praten over wat hem bezig houdt en hoe hij zich voelt. Pas nu leert hij dat er mensen zijn die om hem geven, die hem willen helpen. En dat wil hij ook aan anderen meegeven: praat! Want dan pas weet je dat er mensen zijn.
