In this weeks Quicky of the Self-Love Podcast, Kim explores the importance of developing observation skills as a tool for personal growth, discussing how stepping back from emotional triggers can lead to better understanding and management of one’s emotions. She delves into scientific concepts like pattern interrupts and neuroplasticity, sharing practical techniques such as the “observer breath” and sensory rituals to help manage emotional responses and create new neural pathways. Quotes: One of the most empowering skills any one of us can develop is learning to be the observer. What if we practised zooming out and becoming the observer? Stepping back from the emotional charge and watching the moment with curiosity rather than judgement. It is like rising above the scene, seeing yourself and the other person from a higher vantage point. Triggers activate neural pathways that have often been strengthened for years. When we pause, we get an opportunity to break that automatic loop. This is neuroplasticity in action. Your brain rewiring itself through awareness. Even a three second pause can shift your physiology from fight or flight into rest and digest. When you pause, when you become the observer, when you zoom out, observation opens the door to transformation. I call it the zoom out breathe. Take one, slow deep inhalation and take a step back or upwards, as if you are watching the scene. Name what’s happening: Say to yourself ‘I’m noticing this activation or trigger.’” This shifts you from being in the emotion to actually observing it. Ask yourself: What does the best version of me choose next? Is this really true? Another thing I like to say in my head is, ‘Wow, that’s interesting.’ Anchor through sensory rituals. Essential oils like lavender, neroli, frankincense or your favourite Twenty8 blend can create a physical anchor. Celebrate the pause. You are literally reshaping and rewiring your brain. These micro victories of not reacting can compound into deep embodied change. Becoming the observer isn’t about detaching. It is about holding yourself with compassion. When you observe your thoughts and emotions without becoming them, you truly gain true freedom. Self love isn’t something you just feel. It is something you practise in these exact moments you are tempted to react.
