Linton Bergsen where you willshatter your limits.
I am not much into theself-help industry as much as
I'm into the self-realizedindividual, which is you, what
matters most to you, how you getthere and the obstacles that
may be in your way.
If you would like to be part ofthis podcast and part of that

(00:22):
discussion, I welcome you herewith an open heart, open mind
and open arms.
So, without further ado, let'sget on with the podcast.
Welcome to the Self-Realized,Shatter Your Limits podcast.

(00:45):
This is episode number 106.
Why silence is your secretweapon for success.
I am your host, Linton Bergsen, and today we are going to dive
into a topic that I sincerelybelieve is very often overlooked
in the noise of this modernworld in which we live, with
social media and everything elsethat we are involved in Why

(01:08):
Silence Is Your Secret Weaponfor Success and can actually
give you a slight edge that youmay not be aware of.
Let me ask you a question.
Contemplate on this for amoment, when was the last time
you truly experienced silence?
Now, I'm not just talking aboutthe absence of noise, but an

(01:33):
actual moment in time where youallowed your mind to settle,
your thoughts to pause and yoursenses, which is very important
to reset, because we live in aworld, as we both know, obsessed
with hustle, constant ongoingcommunication, ongoing,
relentless productivity, wheresilence is definitely not the

(01:57):
norm and can honestly feeluncomfortable, I'm sure you are
aware of that, even threateningat times, but let me make a
suggestion to you.
I'm going to suggest thatsilence is not just a break from
the world and the chaos of theworld, but it is, in fact, a
powerful tool that you can useto propel you toward your

(02:23):
greatest achievements.
I would, in fact, call it anunderestimated superpower.
There is science behind silence.
Research has shown that silencejust isn't relaxing, it's

(02:58):
absolutely transformative.
That's what we're looking forwhen we embark upon getting
involved using silence as aweapon for success.
Silence can do many differentthings.
Right now, I'm going to giveyou four areas of your life that
silence can affect profoundly.
Number one it can boostcreativity.
It allows your brain to createnew connections.

(03:21):
If you take moments of silenceduring the day and you walk away
from a situation, sometimes youmay go for a walk in nature.
Or if you're at work, you justtake a break at lunchtime and an
idea comes to you, a solutionto a problem that you were
looking for.
You may have experienced thatin the shower, for example.

(03:41):
You're thinking about an idea,a situation and something comes
to you.
Because you're allowing thatspace, that silence, to work for
you productively, to give youan edge while you just relax
taking a shower.

(04:01):
Number two silence helps yourhealth.
It can help you reduce stressand lower your cortisol levels.
Very, very important to beginto use silence, to decompress.
In moments of silence, to takea deep breath, to become aware

(04:25):
of your state of mind, becomemindful, even if it's just for
two minutes during the day, youwill be able to reap the

(04:49):
benefits of what silence bringsto you even just for a little
while at a time, because you andI can definitely use anything
to help us reduce our stress.
Number three is interestingbecause I don't think a lot of
people always realize this, butsilence can help you enhance
your memory and learning becauseit's giving your mind space to
process information.
You can't just keep crammingyour mind full of information.

(05:11):
There has to be specificmoments of silence, downtime and
quiet to process theinformation that you are now
learning and you are committingto memory, because if you don't
allow that space and that time, you get overloaded.

(05:31):
So take periods of silence tohelp your learning process,
enhance your memory and onceagain be more relaxed about what
it is that you're learning, that is new, and that doesn't
just apply to learning newsoftware or something like that.
It also applies to being in newrelationships with people,

(05:53):
because you're still learningpersonalities, you're still
learning how to work with people, and that applies personally
and professionally.
Number four is improved decisionmaking.
Silence definitely helps youwith improved decision making.
Why?
Because it is helping you to bein tune with your intuition,

(06:19):
which the self-realizedindividual is always trying to
do.
I mention developing intuitionin many of the episodes because
the self-realized individualunderstands that is the
cornerstone of a successful lifedeveloped intuition, listening
to the inner voice, in momentsof silence in moments of

(06:42):
solitude you are able to tuneinto that still small voice that
can guide you into a morecreative as we mentioned earlier
decision-making process, combined with reduced stress and
allowing space for you toprocess information.

(07:05):
Combining all of these together, you'll definitely make better
decisions.
When you think about some ofthe world's most successful
people visionaries, artists, leaders they swear by moments of
solitude and quiet reflectionbecause they use silence, which
you can use as well as animportant reset button in your

(07:29):
life, personally andprofessionally, as a way to
access deeper insights andclarity, that you could not
receive in any other way.
For example Steve Jobs infounding Apple talks a lot about
self actualization and how heused intuition a lot in his
decision-making processes tocome up with the right solutions

(07:57):
that he was looking for as hedeveloped the company ongoing.
He used the termself-actualization.
Self-actualization andself-realization both have in
common the important concept oflistening to yourself and
developing once again thatintuition which is honed in

(08:21):
silence.
I mentioned at the verybeginning of the episode, at the
very beginning of the episode, silence giving you a slight edge
, a superpower.
Let's take a look at silence asa strategy.
Sometimes we don't think of itthat way and how it can in fact

(08:44):
give you a competitive edge.
And here's where it gets reallyinteresting.
We live in a culture todaywhere everyone is basically
shouting to be heard, but thosewho master silence really do
stand out.
That is why silence can be yoursecret weapon in three
different areas that I'm goingto give you that can impact your

(09:07):
life personally andprofessionally.
Number one in negotiations, pausing before you respond gives
you the ability to give a moreconfident and thoughtful
response to what is being saidthan if you just react without

(09:29):
that pause, that critical momentof silence.
Why?
Because it gives you a momentto digest to what is being
presented and said and you areable to respond and not react,

(09:54):
which is a subtle but criticaldifference between a positive
negotiation and a negative one.
Number two in your own personalleadership and leadership in
general, leaders who listen morethan they speak build trust and
respect, because when you arelistening more than you speak,

(10:17):
you are effectively in silence, absorbing what is being said,
not just by the words, but whatis being truly communicated by
that individual, from themeaning behind the words.
And when you listen to peopleand they truly feel heard by you

(10:42):
, you will build trust andrespect with them and they will
build trust and respect withNumber three problem solving,
which can be in the samecategory as creativity.
The best ideas that you willever have mentioned a little

(11:03):
earlier emerge in the quietmoments between distractions.
I use the word distractions onpurpose, because it is so easy
for you and I to get distractedand influenced by things that
are not going to help us problemsolve the right way.

(11:24):
Make sure you don't getdistracted by negative people,
negative influences, naysayers, social media likes and dislikes
and everything else that we canbe distracted by when you are
problem solving.

(11:45):
You really want to harness thepower of silence.
Why silence is your secretweapon for success is because
you know how to harness itspower.
I am going to give you somepractical ways how to harness
that power and make silence workfor you.
So here are some actionablestrategies that you can use.

(12:09):
Number one you can start yourday and I would strongly suggest
this with just five minutes ofsilence.
Make that a habit no cell phone, no music, just you and your
thoughts.
It will change your life.
Number two practice every dayas a habit mindful listening In

(12:39):
conversations.
Focus truly on hearing theother person, without planning
your response.
Number three schedule.
Make it an important point toschedule downtime.
You can call it white space, wherever you would like to call
it in your calendar, where youblock out time for reflection,

(12:59):
even if it's just for a fewminutes.
Sp end some time in silence.
You can harness that power ofintrospection and reflection to
discover what it is you wouldlike to do on going in a
positive way about thesituations and circumstances you
find yourself in currently itdoesn't have to be a long period
of silence, down time, whitespace, whatever you'd like to
call it, but do schedule it sothat you have that time set

(13:35):
aside on a regular basis.
Number four whenever you canembrace silent walks in nature,
it will change your life.
I mentioned this in manydifferent episodes because it
does have a profound effect uponyour well-being and your state
of mind, your mental health.

(13:58):
Leave your headphones at home.
Don't walk around with yourheadphones plugged into your
ears.
Enjoy the sounds of nature andlet your mind wander.
Just be free, just roam free inthe recesses of your mind and
allow things to come to you, percolate up within you and let

(14:19):
that still small voice, thatintuitive voice, the spiritual
part of you, the Godconsciousness, the cosmic
consciousness, whatever you wantto call it let that begin to
communicate with you and guideyou in a more prominent and
meaningful way in your lifeongoing.
Number five is veryunderestimated, but powerful,

(14:45):
very powerful.
Use silence as a response.
In tense situations a pause canbe more powerful than words and
it also gives you theopportunity to think before you
speak, because once you'vespoken, you can't take the words

(15:05):
back, and silence is a powerfulresponse and sometimes it
speaks much louder than words.
Just the look that you givesomeone, without any words, can
be extremely powerful.
In order to have silence workeffectively in your life and

(15:29):
have it as a secret weapon foryour success.
I would strongly suggest to you.
There is a part of us thatsometimes has to overcome the
fear of silence, because silencecan be very uncomfortable.
It can bring up thoughts andfeelings that we'd rather not

(15:51):
deal with.
We would rather avoid.
But that is exactly why silenceis so powerful.
When you begin to lean into thesilence, you confront your
inner world, you gain greaterself-awareness and also
something that is underestimatedyou build resilience.

(16:15):
And if you want to discovermore about building resilience,
I talk about that in episode 96,Discover the Power of
Resilience.
I suggest it's very importantto acknowledge that growth
doesn't happen in the comfortzone.
It never does.

(16:35):
It happens in the quiet momentswhen you're willing to listen
to yourself.
The introspection and thedowntime gives you that ability.
I'm going to give you achallenge for this week.
That is not difficult, but Ihope that you find time to

(16:58):
implement it.
Carve out 10 minutes each dayfor intentional silence.
No distractions, nomultitasking, just you, your
breath and you in the presentmoment.
Notice what comes up, noticehow you feel afterward and, if

(17:20):
you're feeling bold, bring amoment of silence into your next
conversation or meeting and seewhat shifts in that moment that
you have had the courage tochoose silence.
Silence is not emptiness.
It is filled with potential.

(17:42):
It's the space where your nextbig idea, guided by intuition,
the inner voice, your next bigbreakthrough, your next level of
achievement and success iswaiting to be discovered,
released and unleashed into theworld by you.

(18:06):
And that is when you willrealize for yourself why silence
is your secret weapon for yoursuccess.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
