Your faith is your ultimate happiness hack personally and professionally. In this episode I discuss how Harvard Professor Arthur Brooks researched the foundations of human happiness, he identified four key habits: faith, family, friendship, and work. You can view his YouTube video at this link https://youtu.be/w8a0T5XLrXc?si=6cz4dgRKJpJcU0xO But there's something profound about faith I suggest that sets it apart—it's the only happiness factor entirely within your control.

Unlike relationships that shift, jobs that change, or circumstances that fluctuate, faith provides an unwavering foundation. It's that "underlying stream of supportive energy" carrying you through life's challenges. The self-realized individual understands this intuitively, recognizing themselves as their own greatest resource while acknowledging the divine presence working with them.

The ancient wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita reveals something equally powerful—fearlessness tops the list of 26 qualities needed for spiritual transformation. When you combine faith with fearlessness, you create an unshakable foundation for genuine happiness. Most unhappiness stems from this gap: knowing your potential but lacking the faith and courage to fulfill it.

Cultivating this spiritual connection requires intentional practice. Through stillness, solitude, and silence, you access your internal "spiritual powerhouse." This isn't religious dogma but practical spirituality—creating space to hear that intuitive voice guiding you toward your highest expression.

Ready to transform your well-being? Make spiritual connection everyday your priority. Step away from society's expectations and narcissism. Expand your soul through a deeper relationship with your authentic self and the divine presence within. Subscribe now to continue this journey of self-realization and discover how spirituality's power can transform your sense of well-being.

Linton Bergsen (00:01):
Welcome to the Self-Realized Podcast with
Linton Bergsen, where you willshatter your limits.
I am not much into theself-help industry as much as
I'm into the self-realizedindividual, which is you, what
matters most to you, how you getthere and the obstacles that
may be in your way.
If you would like to be part ofthis podcast and part of that

(00:23):
discussion, I welcome you herewith an open heart, open mind
and open arms.
So, without further ado, let'sget on with the podcast.
Thank you for taking the timeout of your very busy day to

(00:49):
join me on episode number 95 ofthe Self-Realized Shatter your
Limits Podcast.

Happiness Hack (00:54):
Spirituality's Power to Transform your
Well-Being.
In this episode's show notes Ihave left a link to a YouTube
video with Arthur Brooks, whoteaches at Harvard University.
He's a behavioral scientistdedicated to the neuroscience

(01:15):
and social science aroundhappiness.
He says that may be a weirdtopic to teach at a business
school.
I would suggest not, becauseeverybody wants to be happy at
work.
I would think here are fourhabits that he mentions in the
15-minute YouTube video that hefeels, due to his research and

(01:36):
background, are important toyour well-being and happiness.
They're in no particular order.
The first one he gives is faith, the second is family, the
third is friendship and thefourth is work.
I'm going to focuspredominantly on the very first
one, number one, which is faith.
How does faith and happinessactually correlate?

(01:58):
Well, in the video he suggeststhe reason being that you need
to transcend yourself and makeyourself small and the universe
large, and that is part ofhappiness to cut out our
narcissism and pay attention andbe in awe of what is greater
than us.
He suggests there are lots ofways you can do that.

(02:19):
You can study differentphilosophies.
Obviously, you can take a walkbefore dawn, cut off all of your
devices, get involved in sometype of meditation, but you do
need to do something to getsmall and not let the
narcissistic world take overyour soul.
Now, that is his suggestion, based on his research in social

(02:40):
science and neuroscience.
For those of you who listen tothe podcast regularly, you'll
know that I've mentionedconsistently on different
podcast episodes how importantit is for you to begin to access
and activate that deeper partof yourself.
Whether you call it spirituality, whether you call it God,

(03:03):
whether you have a particularreligion that you follow, the
actual journey of theself-realized individual is
deeply based in faith, establishing the faith in
something bigger than yourself,as mentioned earlier in the
podcast episode that ArthurBrooks had mentioned in all of

(03:23):
his studies of the foundation ofhabits for happiness.
Establishing faith simply meansthat you believe that there is
something working with you inyour life that can help you
overcome situations andcircumstances that are beyond

(03:43):
your control.
Because you understand throughan intuitive process, because
faith defies logic, that yourwell-being, your sense of
happiness, is not dependent onexternal circumstances, not

(04:09):
dependent on externalcircumstances, but your internal
awareness of your own faith, ofactivating something, call it
spirit, god, universalconsciousness, to work in and
with you at all times as aguiding light.
The self-realized individualunderstands they are their own
greatest resource.
Establishing faith can comefrom many different areas in

(04:30):
your life, many different ways.
You can establish it throughreligion, if that is what you
prefer.
That is not everybody's path, but if it is your path.
Arthur Brooks, as I mentionedearlier on in the episode, he is
a Roman Catholic.
He establishes faith throughthat religion, biblical stories,

(04:51):
the Bible, Christ.
It is obviously a very deeplyfaith-based book that there is a
force, god, working within youand with you to overcome any
situation and circumstance thatyou find yourself in that you

(05:11):
may not have a solution to.
In the beginning of the episodeI mentioned that there were four
things that Arthur Brooks hadmentioned and I do hope that you
have time to look at the video,it's only 15 minutes that he
had looked at establishing, through his own research, habits
for happiness.

(05:32):
They were number one faith, number two, family, number three
, friendships and number four,work.
I'm going to make a suggestionto you about happiness that I
feel very strongly about.
The number one habit that youneed to establish and cultivate
is faith, and the reason I saythat is is because your

(05:54):
happiness really cannot dependon family, friendships or work.
I would disagree with that, because family members, their
behaviors and situations canchange.
The family you were born intoyou may not even get along with.
Friendships can change.
People can turn on you.
Certain friendships work for awhile and then may not work at

(06:17):
all, depending how you evolveand they evolve.
Work environments can change.
You can have a job one day andhave no job the next.
So all these other habitscontribute, I understand, to
your happiness, but they're notas important as the number one
habit to cultivate, which isfaith.
Why?
Because faith is the only thingyou have complete control over

(06:43):
as to how you act and not reactto circumstances you find
yourself in.
That's why I have it as anumber one happiness hack.
It's the only thing you reallydo have control over how much of
it you have or don't have andthat is a shortcut to happiness,
which essentially is what ahack is.
It's giving you a shortcut.

(07:04):
Cultivating faith is a hack tohappiness, which essentially is
what a hack is.
It's giving you a shortcut.
Cultivating faith is a hack tohappiness.
It's not always seen that way,but if you contemplate that for
a moment, I think you wouldagree.
If you have faith and youunderstand how to maintain that
faith through differentdisciplines prayer, meditation,
quiet time however, you decideto maintain your spiritual

(07:28):
engine, your deep resourcewithin yourself that is your
center, your powerhouse of calm, collective thinking and action,
then, from a place of faithwhich you control, you can deal
with the fluctuation in familyrelationships, friendships, work

(07:48):
, health, all these differentenvironments that will change
around you that you cannot haveany control over.
So, disciplining yourself andunderstanding that, spending
time alone, which I talk a lotabout, spending time in solitude
, visiting, acquainting yourselfwith the spiritual powerhouse

(08:13):
that is around you, within you, wanting to constantly and
continually communicate with you, making that a number one
priority is the single mostimportant contributing factor to
happiness in your life.
And the reason I say that toyou is because when you develop

(08:34):
faith, when you own faith withinyourself and that faith is
inside of you that, no matterwhat happens, you can handle any
situation that comes up,because you know that through
faith all things are possible, because you've tested it out,
you've built the muscle andyou've put the time into

(08:55):
developing faith through theonly way you can, which is
stillness, solitude and silence,to hear the voice and feel the
presence of that which loves youthe most.
You can call it, as I'vementioned, god, you can call it
spirit, you can call ituniversal consciousness, but you

(09:18):
know when you feel it, becauseit defies all explanation.
And that's really whatcultivating faith allows you to
have in your life is to have asense of well-being and
happiness, even though externalcircumstances may not be quite
as you would like them to beyour happiness.
The hack for happiness, as theepisode is called, is developing

(09:41):
faith, making that your numberone priority.
Not making money, which isimportant.
Not developing friendships Allthese things are important or
focusing primarily on familyrelationships, because all of
those can change in a moment.
The number one hack forhappiness is saying to yourself

(10:02):
I need to prioritize my timealone.
I need to prioritize my time inprayer.
I need to prioritize my time inbuilding faith.
I need to prioritize my time inprayer.
I need to prioritize my time inbuilding faith.
I need to prioritize my timewhen I'm building my time alone,
activating and accessing myintuition, which comes from

(10:24):
activating and developing yourfaith.
Intuition and faith go togetherthat still small voice that
speaks inwardly to you in yourdarkest moments about what you
should and shouldn't do, comesfrom developing faith.
There is a flip side to faiththat is important to understand
for your own happiness is thatin order for you to have faith,

(10:49):
you're going to have to have acertain amount of fearlessness.
Now, for those of you who arefamiliar with the Bhagavad Gita
and the discourse betweenKrishna and Arjuna the Bhagavad
Gita being the great scripturefrom India that a lot of people
mention and talk about inspiritual realms and just

(11:11):
generally when it comes totalking about philosophy and
well-being, the Bhagavad Gitacomes up very often.
If you're not familiar with itand you feel so inclined, you
might want to pick up a copy.
Take a look at it.
It's a very interestingdiscourse between Krishna and
Arjuna and the philosophy oflife.
In the Bhagavad Gita, there are26 qualities that are suggested

(11:35):
for an individual to transcendinto the higher realms of
consciousness and developthemselves beyond just the
everyday material life,spiritualizing their existence
at a deeper level.
In order to do that, if I askedyou to spiritualize your

(11:57):
existence at a deeper level, what would be the number one
quality out of these 26 wouldyou think would be at the top of
the list?
In the Bhagavad Gita?
A lot of people sometimes saylove, understandably.
Actually, the number onequality required to spiritualize

(12:23):
your existence is fearlessness.
That is, what is the number onequality out of the 26.
So, looking at today's episodetitle Happiness Hack:
Spirituality's Power toTransform Well-Being I would
suggest to you that we look at acouple of hacks here that allow

(12:45):
you to transform yourself andyour well-being and using
spirituality's power to do so,that, using faith and
fearlessness together, you canhave a very happy life.
Contemplate on that for amoment.
If you think about having ahappy life and accomplishing

(13:05):
what it is you really want to dowith your life, would you not
agree with me that you have tohave faith, a happy life and
accomplishing what it is youreally want to do with your life
.
Would you not agree with methat you have to have faith and
be fearless in order to feelalive and able to complete
anything that you set out to do?
So if you were to begin toreally work on happiness and

(13:27):
begin to have some real hacks tomake it work, you will begin to
work on your faith and yourfearlessness.
Does that make sense to you?
If you agree, then you know thereason maybe you're not as
happy as you would like to beright now is because you're
living in fear and you don'thave enough faith, because

(13:50):
there's no way your dreams canmanifest into reality if you
don't allow faith to overridefear to be all you can be.
It is greatly underestimated, when we talk about hacks for
happiness and spirituality'spower to transform well-being,
that those two predominantfactors faith and fearlessness

(14:15):
are keys in order for you tohave true happiness, to own and
work with and apply in your lifethe faith part of it.
We know.
We can obviously read aboutthat in scripture.
We can hear about that inspirituality.
We know we may have faith, notonly faith in something bigger
than ourselves, as suggestedearlier, but faith in ourselves.

(14:38):
And taking literally a page outof the book of the Bhagavad
Gita, which is a great scriptureand renowned worldwide for its
vast knowledge and wisdom, thatthe number one trait to you
transcending yourself on amaterial, human level and living

(15:01):
and being all you can be isfearlessness.
So we have, if you would liketo say in a biblical sense or in
a general sense.
We know that faith is a bigpart of what's recommended
religiously, spiritually, in allour lives.
Have faith.
We hear that a lot beingfearless is also a very big

(15:24):
spiritual component that we hearin other scriptures.
Once again, combining both is atrue hack to happiness, not
always talked about, but now I'mpleased to say that there is
neuroscience and social sciencethat I've left for you in the
show notes, as mentioned earlier, that you can refer and reflect

(15:45):
on as to it being moremainstream and people realizing
that.
Okay, in my workplace and in mylife, faith is a very important
part of my fundamentalhappiness, of my fundamental
happiness.
I've added fearlessness inthere because personally, in my
own life, I don't see how youcan really be happy if you're
not prepared to confront yourfears.

(16:06):
Walk into the unknown, beeverything that you can be and
step into this world and intothis life with faith and hope in
yourself and your future tobecome everything you know you
can be.
And I say that you know you canbe because wouldn't you agree
that a lot of times you'reunhappy or feel unhappy because

(16:30):
you're not living up to your ownpotential, that you don't feel
you're being all that you can be, that you're not really
connected with why you are here, your sense of purpose?
You know there is more to yourlife than you're actually
experiencing and living and alot of times the only reason

(16:51):
that you are not living yourpurpose is because you don't
have enough faith in yourselfand you're filled with fear.
Don't have enough faith inyourself and you're filled with
fear.
So cultivate faith and overcomefear.
Take some risks.
Begin to cultivate arelationship, as mentioned
earlier in this episode insomething bigger than yourself.

(17:14):
Make it your number onepriority.
Get away from society'sexpectations, get away from the
narcissism and expand out yoursoul and go on a deep soul
journey, which is the journey ofthe self-realized individual,
the embedded soul, the purespirit of you, and work on that

(17:35):
relationship within yourself, because that's where spirit
resides and spend the time, effort and energy prioritizing
what it is you need to do foryou and your own well-being.
You cannot cultivate faithwithout downtime for yourself

(17:58):
and building a relationship withsomething other than just human
beings, something outside ofthis realm of existence, because
that is where faith lies.
Prioritizing that, I cannotemphasize enough, is a game

(18:19):
changer and will change how youface every situation in your
life.
It is the only thing you cancount on is the faith that you
have cultivated as a stream, anunderlying stream, and that's
what it's going to feel likewhen you encounter situations

(18:41):
and circumstances in your life,an underlying stream of
supportive energy that youcannot logically explain, that
you have no control over.
Faith is an enormous current ofenergy, but, like anything, you
have to plug into it.
That is what I already want youto apply from this episode.

(19:01):
Spend time plugging in tosomething bigger than yourself.
Make it a priority.
Let it flow through your system, through your nervous system,
so it becomes an integral partof who you are.
And when you need faith, it'llbe there because you've put the

(19:21):
time into cultivating it andfaith overcomes fear.
And when you have both of thoseworking with you and for you in
your life.
You will find that they arebeautiful hacks for your
happiness and are the keys foryou unlocking your spiritual
power to transform yourwell-being.
