Springfield, IL– On July 6, 2024, 36-year-old Sonya Massey called 911 to report a possible intruder outside her home. Deputies Sean Grayson and another officer responded to the call. After finding no intruder, they entered Sonya’s home.
The situation escalated when Sonya, who had a history of mental health issues, approached her stove to remove a pot of boiling water. Deputy Grayson, fearing she might use it as a weapon, threatened her and ultimately shot her in the head leading to her death.
Even more egregious- The Massey family was not told that Sonya had been killed by a sheriff’s deputy until 24 hours later. The investigation would later reveal a deputy with a troubling disciplinary record.
In this episode, we delve into the circumstances leading to the shooting, the subsequent investigation, and broader implications of police-involved killings, which also raises concerns of community policing, police conduct and accountability.
Listen to Season 7: Episode 3 to find out how this tragic case unfolds and where the case stands currently.
Rest in Peace Sonya Massey - Gone but Never Forgotten 🕊️🙏
