Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hey the Refiner, Welcome to Severed, the Ultimate Severance Podcast.
This is your host Stalin S with a note about
this week's podcast episode. It's another rerun. Vinnie P and
I are gearing up for the final rewatch of season two.
We're preparing to break down the enormous finale, Cold Harbor.
It's gonna be huge. I'm planning for three podcast episodes
(00:22):
to cover the one hour and twenty four minute finale.
This is what you can expect from Severed over the
next few weeks. This week is part two of the
episode one rewatch. Then starting next week, there will be
three straight weeks of finale breakdown that will take us
right into Thanksgiving. Over the holidays will be more reruns
and possibly a season wrap up. Starting with the new year,
(00:43):
be listening for more origins episodes. We're already planning to
break down the Jim Carrey Kate Winslet movie The Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, plus a big overview look
at the Prisoner TV series from the nineteen sixties. You've
been incredibly faithful to us, certainly going to return the favor.
I've noticed that a number of hobby and fan made
(01:04):
podcasts will start a rewatch, but then abandon it somewhere
along the way. I'm a completist with a sense of
responsibility to you as the listener. We won't leave you
hanging Severed. We'll complete the season and we're going to
try to help fill the void between now and the
start of season three with more origins, episodes, and as
many interviews as Minny p can get lined up. So
(01:26):
if you're ready, Refiner, it's time to revisit part two
of the first rewatch episode of season two, Hello Miss Cobell.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Severed, the Ultimate Severans Podcast.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Welcome back to part two of Hello Miss Cobell. No formalities, Refiner,
no long winded welcomes you know wire here, Let's get
right back into it. It's time to reopen the file
called Hello Miss Cobell. Last time, Melchik had just put
Mark on the severed elevator. Meltchik is standing ominously and
the lobby as the elevator doors are about to close.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Goodbye Marks.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Wait we get another double zollie, this time with a twist.
As the switch begins, we cut to a point of
viewshot looking through Mark's eye. The pupil completely closes to
black there's a reverse angle looking at Mark's eye, an
extreme close up as the pupil reopens, cut to Mark's face,
(02:35):
and we're back on the severed floor. The first time
I saw this added part of the transition, I was
thinking it had something to do with reintegration. Nope, what
they're showing us is the pupil reset that happens each
time a severed worker rides the elevator. The pupil closes
completely and perception goes to full black. Regabi will explain
(02:55):
the importance of this a couple of episodes from now.
When the elevator opens, Mark his back on the severed floor.
A new, very large painting has been installed on the
far wall. We'll learn this one is entitled Here Pardons
His Betrayers. At first look, it doesn't seem like a
lot of pardoning is happening. Before Macrodaths have been buried
in sand up to their necks. Kere, dressed in a
(03:18):
military uniform, is standing over them. He's holding a sword
stained with blood. It looks like they're about to be beheaded.
Artist Danny of Viles created the painting. He's the real
life O and D worker responsible for some of Keirr's
most memorable art, Danny, was inspired by Soviet era propaganda art.
The buildings up to the right are supposed to evoke harmony.
(03:38):
Kobel's hometown of Salt's Neck, the location of the lumen
ether factory will visit Salt's Neck in the episode Sweet Vitriol,
the sun is giving kir a halo. The reds and
rusts in this painting were a draw for both Jeremy
Hindel and Ben Stiller. Red, according to Hindel, is the
color of love this season. According to propmaster Katherine Miller,
(03:59):
it's all so the color of the revolution. The cover
of Rickens's book was the first real pop of red
scene down here on the severed floor, you remember how
riled up it got the Macrodats. An interesting theory to
come out of this painting involves the wound on each
Macrodat's head. His bloody spot at the temple of each
refiner is reminiscent of the wound harmony created by retrieving
(04:23):
Pete's chip. I don't think Keer was doing chip ectomies
via sword, but it's an interesting observation. Mark's a bit
freaked walking into the lobby the camera does his slow
whippan off the painting and goes into a couple of
slow moves around Mark. He might be heading down the
hall when the elevator Dylan, Mark, did it work? It works.
(04:45):
Where are the others? No? No, no, Dylan didn't think
he'd be coming back. Mark says he's been back a
couple of days already, and.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
They had a whole new team.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Dylan asked if Kobell replaced them. Cobell's gone.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Melchick's in charge.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Seth Meltchik is the man who, in Dylan's perception, tackled
him and cut up his best belt. In reality, this
is the following Thursday. It will be one week tomorrow
since Dylan and Miltchik headed out in the security office.
Such is the weird time distortion for innies. Dylan says
the tackle was fair. He did tackle Seth first, but
(05:17):
I fuck with his belt well to be fair, cess
belt wasn't being used to lock any doors. Dylan crosses
the room to check the title on the new art,
Pardons Betrayers. Just as Dylan is checking the new pick,
the elevator arrives again. The elevator door opens to reveal
John Taturo and he Irv is standing at Bert's door.
(05:39):
In his perception, when he sees Mark and Dylan, there's
confusion in his eyes.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Dude, are you okay?
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Irv is hesitant and shaky as he silently steps into
the lobby. He stops in front of Mark like he's
going to say something, then continues on down the hall,
irving what happened. Dylan's any perspective, of course, makes it
all about the Benjamins. Dude, what's wrong? You pour up there?
We will discover it's Dylan's Audi and the George family,
(06:06):
who are probably the least well off of the macrodats.
Mark wants to follow Irvin Dylan, but he's hesitating. He
keeps looking at the elevator, whispering come on under his breath.
Once he's given up and turned down the hallway, that's
when it happens. Helly in Blue comes running out of
(06:27):
the severed elevator. Mark turns back Hi, and this is
where the Helly Helena debate begins. It's our first look
at Helly r this season. Refiner, is this really Helly
or is it Helena? Egan? The debate would rage for
a month. There were hashtags and heated discussions all over
social media. Finally, at the end of Woe's Hollow, we
(06:49):
were given confirmation this is not Helly R. We are
looking at Helena Egan and it will only be Helena
Egan for the first four episodes of the season. Since
Helena is actually chipped, it was necessary to initiate the
Glasgow Block. Glasgow's a device control routine which prevents a
severance chip from switching even when it passes through a
(07:12):
severed barrier like the elevator. Some folks were asking online
who is holding the switches open for this block? Well,
it doesn't work the same way as the OTC. The
Glasgow block can be put in place by a single
operator and it's not necessary to hold anything open. It's
turned on for as long as you need it. When
it's no longer necessary or it will prevent a drowning,
(07:35):
it gets turned off. Let's track the Helena clues. It
became a huge online debate, but I never for a
second believe this was Helly R. I took a lot
of heat from my stance during the epicaps. For me,
the first indication was right here, this is not Helly
Hugging Mark right off the elevator. Look at the hesitation,
(07:55):
the disgust after that kiss at the end of What's
for Dinner? How could this possibly be the same person?
Mark tells her, Yes, and it was crazy. Mark was
so worried about her. Was she worried about him? She
doesn't say. She's more concerned about how long it's been,
or at least how long he thinks it's been five months,
(08:16):
maybe more so. Mark bought at least some of the
story from SAS office everybody else. Mark tells her to
come on as he's running off in the direction of MDR.
When Mark and Helena come through the big MDR door,
it's ten after nine. He was expecting to see the
new MDR crew around the diamond desk in the distance.
IRV moans Irving Dylan is standing outside the bathroom door.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
He won't come out.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
RV now knows Bert's gone from down here and he's
not available up there. IRV needs a moment. Mark tells
him to take his time. IRV and Dylan are both
their innies for the first time since the OTC. Dylan
wants to know what's going on. We're not in trouble,
Mark says, amazingly No, he at least partially believed the
(09:04):
picture and the story from the newspaper. He said, we're famous,
which sets Dylan up for a great line.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
All of us equalier, one of us is like the star.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Love you Dylan and narcissistic freak. Mark's still confused about
the almost firing. He says he sabotaged the new people.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
You people, So what the fuck happened up there?
Speaker 1 (09:22):
From any Dylan's perspective, there would be a lot of holes.
Mark looks around for Miltchik. He's worried they want to
listen in as the Macrodats tell each other what happened,
because they don't really know what happened. I mean, what
if they're listening Dylan, which Helena takes like a queue.
This is that's not Helly clue number two. As soon
(09:43):
as Mark raises a concern about them being bugged, Helena
turns to the wall where there used to be a
visible camera.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Wait, what happened to the security camera?
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yeah, okay there Helena wait to point out their change
in security measures, So the visible one is gone? How
many hidden ones are there? As Helena is pointing out
missing security camera, herv finally emerges from the bathroom. He's
been crying and is wiping his nose.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
You okay.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
There's a cut to a long shot while Dylan is
waiting for an answer. A tiny voice speaks up.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Hi, everyone, I'm miss Swan.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Mark is already used to the very young assistant floor manager.
Dylan can't hide his surprise. Watch Zach Cherry in this scene.
He doesn't say a word, but he steals the frame
with his turns and facial expressions. Even the Folly guys
get in on it, adding the rustle of his suit
as he turns.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
Mister Melchik's waiting for you in the breakroom.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
All of them in the breakroom. This doesn't sound like
any fun. We cut to a follow shot with miss
Wong striding through the hallways at a steady clip. We
can hear Dylan in voiceover before there's a reverse cut
to the MDR crew.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
What the fuck is going on? Why is she like eight?
Speaker 1 (10:50):
I don't know, Dylan, Helena and Mark are three across
in front. IRV is silently trudging along behind. Helena is
playing dumb like she's trying to figure this out.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
So they've replaced us for a couple of days.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Uh yeah, you know, like you decided in the boardroom
on Friday night. Dylan wants to know who played him.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
They weren't like specific counterparts.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Yeah, but they kind of were. Gwendolen was Helly, Dario
was Dylan, Mark w Deserve and Marks as always is,
Mark s they were weird. Dylan says he shouldn't feel bad.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Feel bad, yeah, for ending their lives.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Fuck somehow, Dylan is sure they deserved it. More creative
shots through the halls of lumen. Ben Stiller could not
get enough when it came to Severed floor hallways. The
set was so dense with hallways. There are numerous stories
of cast and crew getting lost inside York studios on
their way to the day's shooting location. As our Macrodads
make their way to the break room, you might want
(11:49):
to go wash your hands refiner ten times a day.
Remember Severed will be right back.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
This is Mark Geller kier Egan on Severance. When I
want to hear the latest details about the company I founded,
I listen to Severed, the Ultimate Severance Podcast.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Although very new, Miss Wong seems to be pretty sure
of herself when it comes to navigating the Severed floor
here would be that's not Helly Clue number three. It's
a little more subtle. She doesn't have the Helly walk.
Helly ar is no fan of heels. She trudges around
the severed floor. Helena is more at ease on her heels.
(12:32):
Brittlauer has set an interview. Since Helly doesn't dress herself,
it's almost like she's rebelling against these clothes she has
to wear. Britt says she thinks about Helly wearing her
clothes like she's wearing a basketball uniform. Ms Wong uses
her key card on the door labeled break room. This
is not a room filled with pleasant memories for any
(12:52):
of the refiners. Ah, but this isn't the first season
under that awful harmony Kobell. This is the second season
which includes the friendly reforms of mister Seth Miltchik. After
a bit of hesitation, Mark is the first through. IRV
brings up the rear. He fixes Miswong with a challenging
gaze before entering the hallway. It's not very pleasant. Mark
(13:14):
is making his way down the same darkened hallway as
what he remembers. The other refiners are gamely following along.
You can hear the same low thud of machinery. See
the same intimidating door with the black vent panel. Mark
pushes through to discover a smiling Seth Miltchik in a
game room. The music becomes whimsical. This is the former
(13:35):
psychological torture chamber known as the breakroom, now repurpose. It's
all part of mister Miltchik's friendly reforms. The purple chairs
are a Mark Nousen design from two thousand and two
called the Nimrod. They're here and we'll also see Nimrod
chairs of a different color in the family meeting space.
The Nimrod chair uses a blow molding process normally used
(13:58):
for things like water bottles, works for a close shape
with a single hole. Then Nimrod is offered by Hive
for two and forty five dollars each with free shipping.
According to Season two set decorator David Schlessinger, the Nimrod
was not the first choice for seating in this room.
Originally the room was described with bean bag chairs for seating.
(14:19):
I can see the bean bags for this seventies feel.
Also the friendly teen hangout kind of vibe. They seem
to be going for in this room. From a practical standpoint,
actors don't like them because you can never look good
sitting in a bean bag chair. Nobody does not to mention,
they're a nightmare to get in and out of. On
top of that, the sound department would rather you not
(14:40):
use a bean bag because they are noisy. David also
said it was agreed that Nimrod delivered more of the
lumen esthetic than the bean bags ever could. The centerpiece
of this room is a front projection television that was
cutting edge technology in the mid nineteen seventies. This is
the Advent Video Beam one one thousand. Advent was founded
(15:01):
by legendary audio engineer and entrepreneur Henry Kloss in nineteen
sixty seven. If you remember Advent, they produced everything from
high end loudspeakers to headphones to this TV, but Advent
would be closed by nineteen eighty one. The plug and
play Video Beam was listed for three thousand dollars in
(15:22):
nineteen seventy eight, pricey by today's standards, outrageous at the time.
To put that in perspective, the average US household income
in nineteen seventy eight was right at fifteen thousand dollars.
This advent unit was far from portable. The projector base
weighs one hundred and forty pounds and the screen is
sixty pounds. The base is designed to be one hundred
(15:45):
inches just over eight feet from the curve projection screen.
Scattered around this weird rumpus room are posters. The famous
Dylan hang in There poster was the only one described
in the script for this room. It's purple, staying with
the purple color scheme of the chairs. David Schlessinger loved
the idea of the poster, but he said, there's no
(16:05):
way you can have just one. If the only poster
they created for the whole room was the hang in
their poster, it would put too much emphasis on it.
It's too weird. They needed to scatter posters with various
messages all around the room. Need more posters, no problem,
We've got severance heavyweight creatives on speed dial. Dan Erickson
scripted the new posters. Painter Danny Aviles was brought in
(16:28):
to create custom illustrations. He was strongly influenced by Soviet
era propaganda visuals. Graphic artist Tanzy Maschad pulled text and
illustrations together to create the final versions. Tansy has been
a part of the Severance organization from the beginning. She's
also the designer who created the Lumin logo and the
cover of Rickens book, The You You Are. If you've
(16:50):
heard these Severed Origins episodes covering the movie Brazil, propaganda
posters were heavily featured there too. If you haven't, make
sure to check out Severed or Origins you'll find Severed
podcast episodes focused on those things that influence Dan Erickson
during his creation of Severance, Grin and Bardit is the
(17:10):
only CEO themed poster. It's name checking forth CEO Baird Egan,
along with a very smiley line drawing of old Baird.
He's pointing his right index finger. The way he's doing it,
his hand is also forming an L for Lumen. Of course,
there's be ever Mary a cure quote for the poster.
Kir has the body of a honeybee. The chambers of
(17:32):
his honeycomb include the Lumin logo. I'm a frolic Aholic
is having fun with one of the tempers, the character
of Frolic the Jester is sitting at a table with
a Lumin employee. They are both smiling broadly while enjoying
a beverage. No Malice Palace is the only landscape oriented poster.
It features a Lumin employee kicked back and relaxing while
(17:54):
the temper Malice is knocking at the window. Finally, there's
a line drawing of kir reaching out shake your hand.
Instead of Live Laugh, Love, the headline is live Laugh
Lumen with a period after each word. Although not visible
on screen, I did see another CEO themed poster design
on display at Lumen, well not exactly Lumen, but at
(18:18):
the Bell Labs complex. They hosted what was dubbed a
Mysterious and Important event on the weekend of April fourth
through sixth of twenty twenty five. As a part of
this display, there was an additional poster featuring another Lumen CEO.
This one said Myrtle, Myrtle, Myrtle, with exclamation points after
each word. It includes drawn pictures of Myrtle Egan both
(18:41):
doing a Rosie the riveter pose and I think dabbing
Myrtle looks like a good time. Each poster has the
footer line. This motivational sentiment has been provided by Lumen
Management and Joy. The refiners enter warily looking around the new.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Space macrodata refinement. Welcome back.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Interesting how just a couple of days ago Seth claimed
Mark was the only one willing to return to work
after the OTC. Miltchik is a smiling usher. Yes, if
Irving could have a seat in the back, tall glass
of water. In an aside to Miltchik, Marcus says, it
looks like the board reconsidered his terms and animation screen
(19:23):
is running to the left of the projection screen on
it is the new positioning phrase Lumen is listening. Ideally,
this means Lumen is listening to the concerns of their
employees and responding. Alternatively, this could be taken to mean
Lumen has doubled down on Mike's and recording equipment. They
aren't going to miss another uprising. As the four refiners
(19:43):
settle in, Miltchik tells them what they're about to see
will be shown to all new hires after today. I
highly doubt this, but it adds to the story of
their uprising being so effective.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
I hope it will give you a sense of Lumen's feelings.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
Miltchik points a remote at the video beam bay and
steps out of the way. It was an added feature
but the video beam did have an optional remote. The
three minute and fifteen second animated video they're about to
watch came about because of a lack of security footage. Initially,
the story of the Macrodad uprising was going to be
told through security footage showing the various scenes we'll see
(20:18):
in the animation. Since Luman isn't a real company with
a real security system, getting this footage meant somebody would
actually have had to have shot it, like back during
production of the first season. Once it was determined no
one had shot any security footage for pretty much all
of these scenes, production designer Jeremy Hindall had an idea.
Instead of trying to recreate and shoot these scenes, which
(20:41):
would be a huge time consuming task, Hindall suggested making
a cartoon out of it. The Macrodats are emotionally pre teens,
they should love animated content. Hindall pitched this option to
the production team. Exec producer Ben Stiller said he had
a personal connection with Duke Johnson from Starburn Studios. Johnson
had been the director behind Charlie Kaufman's twenty fifteen stop
(21:04):
motion animated feature and Now Me Lisa in the World
of Severance. The Lumen animation team kicked this video out
over a weekend. In reality, work on this Lumen video
took months. It was some of the earliest footage created
for Season two of Severance. This animation was created entirely
using stop motion. This means each character had a corresponding
(21:26):
posable puppet. There are twenty four frames of film in
a second. Stop motion requires that each puppet be moved
one twenty fourth of a second. Shoot a frame, then
move the puppets. It's incredibly painstaking and time consuming. It
is almost identical to the process Adam Scott's Ben Wyatt
character used for the animation he created in Parks and Rack.
(21:46):
Like with the one hundred percent file completion animation of Kere,
Ben Stiller cut a rough voice track for the animators
to work from. Unlike the one hundred percent animation, they
did bring in another voice to record the final Ben's.
Stiller's first choice for the voice was former President Barack Obama.
Stiller told this story on The Jimmy Kimmel Show. I
didn't ask him a person I knew someone who knew
(22:09):
his lawyer, and his lawyer said, I can relay the
request if you write an email. Obama, in a pretty
cool move, responded directly to Stiller. He claimed to be
a huge fan of the show. He loved season one
and said he was looking forward to season two. But no,
don't think I have time in my schedule to make
this happen, And like, what, what's more important?
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Then? Come on doing the voiceover for the animated building
and sun.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
But it was pretty cool that he responded. It's very
cool that he responded. Yeah, Stiller had to settle for
his second choice action star Keanu Reeves. Initially uncredited in
the role, it didn't take long for people to identify
the voice. The video opens on the words luman is
listening keyed over animated landscape. A flying keer, much like
(22:56):
the one from one hundred percent Animation, rockets through the frame.
He's flying towards the Home del Complex building. The camera
decelerates and drops down, so we are looking directly at
one of the sides of an animated Bell Labs building.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Oh hi, you probably don't recognize me from this angle.
Speaker 1 (23:14):
This angle is from one of the reflecting ponds. The
side of the building where Mark usually parks doesn't have
a reflecting pond. I'm the Lumin Administrative Building Branch five
oh one, and you're sitting in me right now. Johnson said.
One of the earliest problems they had to contend with
involved how a flat sided glass building would talk. Instead
(23:35):
of molding in a mouth, they opted for magnetic stick
on facial features. This was easier to work with than
a molded mouth and gave them a wide range of expressions.
The building says, his official name is a doorfull, so
you can just call me Lumen. Five oh one seems
like the wrong number for this branch. All indications are
(23:55):
KIR is the first and original Lumen location. We'll even
see the evolution of the buildings on this site in
a moment. Maybe it's part of some larger corporate wide
numbering scheme. For instance, maybe all administrative buildings are designated
five hundred level buildings. The worldwide flagship ADMIN building for
the company would be number one in this series, so
(24:17):
it receives the designation five oh one. Remember how Mark
w said he was working at five X. The five
may have indicated another admin building, only this one has
an experimental severed floor. I've gone through a lot of
changes since my siring here in eighteen seventy siring is
a word we'll hear again. Down on the testing floor,
(24:37):
various versions of the lumin HQ building are flipped through.
The building claims to have always maintained a love for
its workers, both unsevered and severed. In the animation, the
huge relief sculpture of Cure in the atrium winks. The
animation indicates the severed floor is one level below the
(24:58):
main atrium floor. Based on the elevator control panel we
saw in the security office in season one, this isn't
even close. There are thirteen floors identified from the top
of the elevator shaft at Judd's guard desk down to
the severed floor. The elevator to the testing floor goes
down from the severed floor at least one more level.
(25:19):
The building tries to pump up the hometown crowd. Not
to brag, but my basement floor is one of the
premiere severed workspaces in the two hundred and six countries
from which Loomin operates. I hate to argue with Keanu
or the building, but that's not right. There are one
hundred and ninety five recognized countries according to the UN,
(25:39):
one hundred and ninety three are members. Palestine and the
Vatican are listed as observing. Interestingly, there are two hundred
and six bones in the human body. Whoever wrote the
video might be getting their number facts confused. Some commenters said,
the lights on this globe indicate Lumen is operating from
island locations or possibly just out in the ocean. This
(26:01):
is an interesting observation, but I don't think the animated
globe was intended to be a super accurate indicator of
Lumen locations. An unidentified animated severed floor worker runs into frame.
The building becomes menacing, but then softens. Hey, no running
in my halls that tickles the worker. Gulps HERV gets
(26:24):
a huge laugh out of this rather lame joke. But
what makes a building truly happy? This is where the
animation addresses the revolt. We see a down angle shot
of the diamond desk. Animated versions of the MDR crew
are refining away, but we hear they are dissatisfied with
their severed lives. They conspire to mount what Lumen historians
(26:45):
will forever call the Macrodat uprising. The animation shows multi
armed versions of Mark and Helly are working like crazy
in the security office. Mark glances over at Helena, who
looks uncomfortable righteous The animation shows IRV climbing up on
the diamond desk. Then there's an actual recording of Irving
(27:05):
from season one.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
It's Burnley's placed to the.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Crowd animated Irv's hair bursts into flame. Animation director Michael
Grandberry from starburn said, a quick scene like this one
took weeks of testing to figure out. How do they
switch from normal hair to the fire version? What is
the fire made of? How are they getting lights flickering
from inside it? The problem solving was never ending. This
(27:30):
scene might look familiar if you're of a certain age.
In the Rank and Bass Christmas specials from the nineteen sixties,
the character of the Heat Miser had flaming hair and
backup dancers. This character was definitely an inspiration for Ben
Stiller when it came to creating the look of this scene.
IRV is not as thrilled about his dancing avatars as
(27:51):
he was with the tickles joke. There's a recreation of
Mark's impatient speech at O and D, complete with original audio.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Ear still working in the dark.
Speaker 1 (28:03):
They did a great job with Felicia's puppet, but Where's
Bird and Love? The elevator door is open, and Helly
throws herself in Marcus's arms for an animated recreation of
that kiss. They even throw some heavy pink lighting over
the scene.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Shit.
Speaker 1 (28:20):
Yeah, Dylan was waiting for his waffle party when this
went down. I would call this that's not Helly Clue
number four. Jack Helen's subdued reaction to the kiss and
Dylan's comment, you know, looking over at Mark or even
looking embarrassed. She just looks down without emotion. This is
our second piece of actual audio from the uprising. Several
(28:40):
folks have asked, if Leuman was recording all of this,
why didn't they just put a stop to the uprising
before it ever started. I think this goes to the
question of staffing on the severed floor. You can have
all of the surveillance equipment in the world, but it's
worthless if no one is there to monitor it. Doug Graener,
the one guy who we know might have been watching
and list by this time, is dead. I think Lumen
(29:02):
recorded this information because they automatically record everything. The problem
was no one listened back to it. I would bet
they found these recordings well after the uprising had occurred.
The Lumen building tells us this macrodat uprising yielded bounteous reforms.
Even the building talks like cure. We see unidentified Lumen
(29:24):
designers laying out blueprints. What are some of these reforms?
Speaker 2 (29:28):
These include tasty new snacks like fruit leather, cut beans,
Christmas mints and salsa.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Animated Dylan chows down on some of the new Christmas mints.
They're so good, he's practically orgasmic. Real Dylan isn't impressed.
He looks like he wants to deny liking them, but
the narration rolls on quick as side. Some folks had
never heard the term fruit leather. Fruit roll ups are
fruit leather. Fruit leather is made by puring fruit then
(29:56):
drying it until it has a rubbery texture. Next on
the the big list of reforms is the Lumen hall pass.
This is presented as an incentive, but we don't get
any details. In Lumen's very literal interpretation, the hall pass
is a pass that allows the innies to be out
in the severed floor halls. The modern slang definition of
(30:17):
hall pass has taken on a very different meaning. The
twenty eleven fairly Brothers movie of the same name brought
the term to a wide audience. The modern slang meaning
for hall pass is an agreement between a committed couple.
It says they can have sex outside of the relationship.
This is usually a temporary or one off situation, as
dictated by the hall pass. Seeing Helli grab Irv's hand
(30:40):
as they fly off together cause some viewers to wonder
just what kind of hall pass Lumen was awarding. For
some reason, pineapple bobbing is now a perk. We see
an animation of Helly and Mark with their hands bound
bobbing in a big tank for pineapples. It looks more
like torture than a perk. Pineapples become a huge and
(31:01):
iconic part of the next episode, then we never hear
about them again. The up angle view of Helly's face
going into the water has been identified as foreshadowing for
Woe's Hollow. Interesting side note. They have nothing to do
with production of the actual TV show, but the Odyssey
company that produces the new Ben and Adam Severance podcast
(31:22):
is named Pineapple Street Studios. Their logo is a pineapple
an influence. Maybe the timing was right to our brand
new playful mirror room. Nothing about this mirror room looks
playful like the pineapple bobbing. This feels more like torture
than a perk. A goat and two rabbits are drinking
(31:43):
from the reflecting pool. The building is ruminating. He says
he's been by this reflecting pool his whole life. Yet
it took the quiet courage of four NDR heroes to
shunk who I really have? The shot zooms to the
covered doorway at the bottom of the Building's all four
of our original NBR crew are standing there waving, And
(32:04):
of course, if you're going to start the video with
flying Kere, you really need to end it with flying Kere.
He zooms out past the Lumen water Tower, which is
also animated.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
They made quite a splash, they sure did, water Tower.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Can you grabbed headlines for his voice work on the building,
which I think maybe slighted our water tower a little bit.
The voice of the water Tower is Saturday Night Live
cast member Sarah Sherman. The Long Island native, has been
an SNL cast member since twenty twenty one. She's currently
in her fifth season as a featured part of the
historic SNL fifty cast. How hard. Are they selling the
(32:41):
idea this revolt was a good thing for Lumen pretty hard?
I thank your for the macro death uprising. They're embracing it,
at least in this video. I know Seth claimed this
was going to be used as the new intake video,
but I don't see this being shown to anyone else. Ever.
There's a swell of music, dramatic zoom out from the building,
(33:04):
and cig over that thanks Keir for the Macrodet uprising.
The MDR crew is stunned the point of silence. Bilin
slowly and tentatively applauds, but stops when the others shoot
him a look. What a great time to take a
few moments and really savor these new improvements. Refiner Severed
(33:27):
will be right back. Hi. I'm Adam Scott.
Speaker 5 (33:33):
I play mark s on Severance, which you likely already
know since you're listening to sever to the Ultimate Severance Podcast.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
The wide shot of the room reveals a lighted balloon
in the corner. This one is yellowish. There's another one
to the opposite side of the room that's purple. Some
commenters have identified these colors as crem, brulet, and puce.
The lighted yellow balloon reminds me a bit of the
balloon that acts as security in the prisoner. A large
weather balloon is constantly monitoring the inhabitants of the island.
(34:06):
After the video, Miltchik steps center stage. He's apologizing to
the Innis. He claims they've had their differences, but.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
I want you to know that I truly respect each
and every one of you.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
He doesn't want to be their jailor. Miltchik reveals a
radical new policy on the part of Lumen. Each Innie
will have the chance to resign by the end of
the day. Not this decision will be made entirely by
the innie. If they don't work on their file, he'll
know they've decided to resign. No ill will with a smile.
(34:40):
He even claims he might buy their Audia drink at
a bistro one day. There's a wonder cut to Helena here.
I think maybe he has had a drink with her
at a bistro. As Seth is exiting, he reiterates the
new policy about no cameras or microphones right. He claims
the breakroom is a safe space where the Innis can
talk privately.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
Privacy shouldn't mean packing into a supply closet. Like so many.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Sardines, Seth is playing to a very dead room. The
Macrodeths all look at him mutely. In the reverse shot,
you can clearly see the lighted purple balloon in the
corner just to the left of Mark's shoulder. Seth gives
them a bit of a pep talk before he leaves.
He hopes they will all stay to be a part
of what they've helped build.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
A new quarter first start.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
And they'd better get a move on. Tomorrow is the
end of the first week of the new quarter. Mark
gask gives Seth a reassuring nod before he leaves. It
all seems pleasant enough, but there's a far deeper rift
here than what can be healed with a nod. Helena
is the first to speak after the door closes.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
What the hell was that massive asshead game?
Speaker 4 (35:48):
Is?
Speaker 2 (35:48):
What that was?
Speaker 1 (35:49):
The Nies may be young, but they're not dumb. Dylan
wants to know what the hell the others saw up there?
No more messing around. What's the deal? Mark scans the
walls mutely, the microphones in here. I call this that's
not helly Clue number five. She consistently pushes the no
listening devices narrative in an attempt to get them to talk.
(36:10):
Dylan is jaded.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
Yeah, he says a lot of shit, So just fucking whispering, okay.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
Mark launches into his tale of attending the Ricken book
reading you know rickenhal Yeah, and he's related by Audi's
brother in law. Oh and for some unknown reason, they
both know Kobell.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
That's insane.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Mark says, that's not all. He tells about finding the
wedding photo and how the woman in the photo is
Ms Casey.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Miss Casey is your wife, my Outy's wife.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
This is an important distinction. It becomes monumentally important at
the end of the season.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
But she's dead.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
They pause for a moment to process Mark's information, and
she's down here. Mark tells about going to wellness.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
It's gone.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
This doesn't compute with Dylan. Mark says, there is no mistake,
it's truly gone. Helena tries to offer some stilted and
phony sympathy.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
Are you okay?
Speaker 1 (37:03):
This causes Mark to turn his attention to Helena.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
What about you? What did you see?
Speaker 1 (37:07):
This had become a huge question in my mind, especially
since I was suspecting this woman of fraud. There's no
way Luhmann would let Helly r tell her real story
to the Macrodads, knowing she's an Egan, would give this
severed floor folk far too much power. In order to
make sure Helly's true story didn't get out, they sent Helena.
You'd think Helena might have prepared something in case she
(37:30):
was asked this question. She has such a low opinion
of Anny's I don't think concocting a lie even crossed
her mind.
Speaker 4 (37:37):
So the inside of a really fucking boring apartment.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
So does this mean she lives by herself? Helena says
yeah and continues with her description. She's kind of getting
into it, like it's improv She claims to have been
watching some nature show on TV, wearing sweatpants and a
T shirt. The other Macrodats want detail. Ellen asked if
this shirt maybe promoted a band or did it have
a pocket.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
It was like a safe the gross shirt.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
So far, so good, irv as Then what this is?
Where Helen's narrative falters.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
Then I went outside and found a guy. She looked
like a gardener.
Speaker 1 (38:14):
She told this guy everything, and he, in turn is
going to pass it along to his brother, who's a cop.
Mark is nodding. He's trying to give her some support,
but this story really sounds made up. IRV has an
issue with her story. A lot of people had an
issue with her story. Night is weird. The fact that
it's the middle of winter also makes it even weirder.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
I think so maybe as a did her chop during
a day.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Numerous heated online discussions were launched by this night Gardener comment.
I saw it as Helen is privilege, showing the first
person a little rich girl like Helena would imagine encountering
out in the yard would be a gardener. Others said
it was maybe a little odd, but it didn't prove anything.
I even saw a couple of posters who claimed to
actually be night gardeners. They're rare, but they do exist.
(39:03):
Helen's defense of her story kind of sputters out. Mark
turns his attention to IRV. What did he see? IRV
can't answer, it's still an open wound. He deflects the question.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Suppose he's serious about letting us.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
Leave any IRV is in the same position as Audi Mark.
He's grieving the loss of a significant other. IRV is
considering ending this version of himself so he doesn't have
to endure the pain of losing Bert. The refiners all
look shocked as the ramifications of his questions sink in.
Helena asks, this time, what did IRV see?
Speaker 3 (39:41):
It's not a world up there.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
That's what I saw.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
There is a certain sense of safety built into the
any existence. Dylan looks concerned for his friend.
Speaker 3 (39:51):
Come on, man, you can tells.
Speaker 1 (39:54):
I don't know if he can. It's just too personal
and too painful. Helena says it's okay, even if it's bad.
Without a word. IRV leaves the break room. The other
three sit there stunned for a few moments. We catch
up to IRV out in the halls. The others are
in hot pursuit IRV. I just want to walk for
a bit, but he's walking in the direction of the
(40:15):
severed barrier. Dylan tells Mark and Helly to head back
to camp. He can talk him down.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
I'll get you part.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
Dylan runs on ahead in Irv's direction. Mark and Helly
turned back. They start out talking about IRV, then Helena
changes the subject.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
Did you guys look happy wedding photo?
Speaker 1 (40:32):
Mark says they did, but then he considers who he's
talking to.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
I never like miss Casey, and I never felt that way.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
Helena gives him a reserve. This conversation is a bit
perverse when you consider who Mark is talking to. This
is Helena Egan Audi, who knows about Cold Harbor and
the testing floor and whatever the heck Luman has been
doing to Gemma for years now.
Speaker 4 (40:58):
So what are you gonna do?
Speaker 1 (40:59):
Sure the any for their pathetic plan so you can
easily thwart them, Right, Helena, you gotta get her out
of here. Wait to keep it vague, mark any. Mark
then sounds like he's trying to convince himself it's his wife, right,
Helena agrees.
Speaker 4 (41:13):
And assuming she's still here, ah.
Speaker 1 (41:15):
Wait to be all positive there, Helena. Maybe they shipped
her off to Grand Rapids. We then get that's not
Helly Clue number six.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Though technically strictly speaking, she's not your wife.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
Helena then proceeds to divide Any from AUTI and assigned
value to each side for sure, because worthless Any could
never come up with something as precious or valuable as
a ring. Mark then makes an argument guaranteed to cause
an Egan to see red.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
Except you know, we're the same ish person.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
What are you talking about? You dirty? Any Innis are
subhuman in the Egan's view, they are the drones we
shove down in the basement. Then we force them to
do our dirty work. Mark says the difference is between
he and his audi are mushies. It's mushy. You can
practically see the short hairs stand up on her neck.
There's nothing mushy about it. Innies are innies and Audi's
(42:10):
are real people.
Speaker 4 (42:11):
We're not the same.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
Actually, she tries to clarify. She means, it's the difference
between us and the Audi's. Nice save Helena.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
And speaking for myself, I don't think we owe them shit.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
She claims. Ms Casey is one of us. If Mark
decides he wants to get her out of here, which
is a bit frightening, So you're staying. Oh yeah, she's staying,
and she's going to cause some major trouble. Dylan has
caught up to IRV a the severed barrier hallway hold alone, Dylan,
He reminds IRV he can't leave until the end of
(42:42):
the day. IRV turns to Dylan.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
I fail at the objectives.
Speaker 1 (42:46):
Objective is another indication of irv's military career, although we've
still not gotten any definitive proof he served.
Speaker 3 (42:54):
I went to go find Bert.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
IRV tells Dylan that Audi Bert is married, or at
least with some one.
Speaker 3 (43:00):
I saw them the window.
Speaker 1 (43:02):
IRV should be happy because Bert's happy.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Yeah, but.
Speaker 3 (43:07):
Seems like you're probably not right.
Speaker 1 (43:10):
IRV claims the last time he was happy was when
all he knew was MDR. Bringing real world emotions into
this sheltered life isn't a good idea. He never should
have tried to be happy.
Speaker 3 (43:22):
I'm going to Dylan.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Dylan grabs IRV and physically restrains him. It's not leaving,
so stop calling it that. It's dying. It's killing your
inny forever. Dylan and IRV are face to face, pushing
each other. Herb stops resisting and puts a hand on
Dylan's shoulder. You're a IRV then gives Dylan a big
bear hug. When Irv's mouth is right up by Dylan's ear,
(43:45):
he whispers something to him. He tells Dylan he woke
up in his apartment.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
I was standing in front of some kind of easel.
Speaker 1 (43:52):
Which sets Dylan up for one of the funnier lines
of the episode.
Speaker 3 (43:56):
Fuck, there's easels up there.
Speaker 1 (43:58):
I'd love it if they paused right there to let
Dylan explain what he thinks easels are. IRV describes the
painting of the black hallway. He tells about the elevator
at the end with the down arrow.
Speaker 3 (44:12):
He concusss of them.
Speaker 1 (44:13):
IRV doesn't know why, but he wanted Dylan to know
about it before he left. IRV tries again to get
through the barrier. Dylan is a force to be reckoned with.
He holds IRV in place in his ear. He tells
him it's not outy Burt. He needs to be concerned
with big deal if Outy Bert has a hot husband
or whatever.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
Any Bert is the guy you feel for, and I
know because I encourage the.
Speaker 1 (44:36):
Courtship well eventually, but not until after locking him in
the conference room and leading him through the hall shackled
like a prisoner. After all of that, then Dylan encouraged
the courtship. IRV looks pleadingly at Dylan. He wants it
to be over.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
I want the pain to be.
Speaker 1 (44:53):
Walking through that barrier and never returning to this place
means any Irv's pain will be gone for good. Unfortunately,
it also means any IRV will be gone for good.
Dylan says, Bert wouldn't want that, do you know, Because
I don't want that. Without saying it, Dylan is saying,
I love you, bro, he is sad. Dylan then tries
(45:14):
to be pragmatic instead of emotional. He says, if irv's gone,
he's gonna be less productive, so that's why RV needs
to stay. Irv's face softens as he realizes what Dylan
is really saying to him. Dylan he pauses to push
Dylan's glasses up on his nose. The glasses thing is
such a great move. It conveys RV's feelings towards Dylan
(45:39):
in one simple, intimate motion. I wonder if it was
written that way, or did Turo or Stiller or even
Zach Cherry come up with it.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
I'm a favorite perk.
Speaker 3 (45:51):
Don't bring them.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
Into this, Dylan says he just knows if Bert were
still here, he'd be telling IRV to stick around and
find out what's going on. This intense moment is broken
by a small voice from off camera.
Speaker 3 (46:04):
Thing.
Speaker 1 (46:04):
MS Wong is standing at the end of the hall
next to the fire extinguisher.
Speaker 3 (46:08):
Mister Melchick would like to see.
Speaker 1 (46:10):
Dylan is hesitant to leave, but he follows mis Wong.
He looks back over his shoulder to IRV, not knowing
what irv's decision is going to be. Cut to a
computer screen animating on and off like a screensaver. Is
the phrase hello, miss Kobell. Hey, it's the title of
the episode.
Speaker 3 (46:26):
I know, but they said it would be corrected by now.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
Ah, the joys of setting up a new office. Seth
is on with tech Support. Tech Support doesn't care if
you are the undisputed god of the severed floor.
Speaker 3 (46:37):
It should be mister Miltchick.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
Yeah it should be, but hey, what are you gonna do?
I love how the intimidating mister Miltchick is completely at
the mercy of tech Support. He then spells his name
with the mr at the beginning. Ms Wong enters and
interrupts the end of the call.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
Well what should you please see that it's taken care of? Yes,
thank you.
Speaker 1 (46:59):
Seth hangs up, but tells mis Wong if he gets
a call about his welcome screen, put it through immediately.
Dylan pushes past mis Wong into the office. These second
season innies are a pushy's sword.
Speaker 3 (47:11):
You wanted to see me.
Speaker 1 (47:12):
This is the first time these two have really been
together since the finale showdown. At the security office, Dylan
walks in with a bit of a swagger. You can
tell from his voice he's spoiling for a fight. Seth
is cool. He says he did call for Dylan and
excuses Ms Wong. Dylan is concerned about the destruction of
property he experienced last Friday.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
You can apologize about the belt.
Speaker 1 (47:33):
Seth smirks a bit as he comes around the desk.
Speaker 3 (47:36):
Your wist's name is Qutchen.
Speaker 1 (47:37):
Dylan's achilles heel as an innie is his family. Knowing
he has a family seeing his son during the OTC
in his closet. It's all combined to change Dylan's attitude
about being an inny. What all thoughts of his belt
are forgotten. Seth has opened a door to a back room,
so he wanted you to know. We first saw this
(47:59):
door during the first episode, but we didn't go through it.
Harmony came out of this door at the start of
her meeting with Mark s. What we didn't get to
see was the back room behind this office. The writers
and creative people knew it was there. This is just
the first chance we've had to go back there. Seth
motions for Dylan to follow. Come with me, Mister Miltchick
(48:20):
apologizes for not hearing Dylan's needs. Wow, this back room
is packed with stuff. It's also meticulously organized with file
and divider boxes on the shelves. Mosha Grose from Reset
Locations told me those small divider boxes that line the
back wall were a find out at Bellworks. When the
production team was scouting the location, they came across a
(48:42):
room where a number of these old file organizers were stored.
They had been used by Bell going all the way
back to the nineteen sixties. Severans couldn't pass them up,
so here they are. The furnishings in this room are
from Olivetti. Season two set decorator David Schlessinger said they
had a number of pieces from Olivetti that were used
throughout the production. We'll see more from Alivetti in Jemma's
(49:05):
office at Gann's College. In order to give this room
a cohesive look, David said he had all of the
metal furniture and shelving units powder coated, Seth steps to
an angle drawing board, he enrolls a set of blueprints
with the title Audy Family Visitation Suite is.
Speaker 3 (49:21):
A blueprints for a new renovation of which I chose
not to inform.
Speaker 1 (49:25):
Your colleagues because none of Dylan's colleagues have a family.
This is a perk seth can hold over Dylan's head
without anyone knowing he's being manipulated. The plans are very complete.
There's the memory wall, ergonomic seating, a courtyard out the back,
and planters. We can also see where the two Nimrod
chairs will be located in the main meeting area.
Speaker 3 (49:46):
It's called the Audi Family Visitation Suite.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
Dylan asks if he can see his family here. Miltchik
answers in a very lumin way.
Speaker 3 (49:55):
If you take the name of the room at face value,
I'd say yes.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
As I pointed out in the eppicap for this episode,
if you'd taken the name of the break room at
face value prior to this season, you'd have thought it
was a great place for a cup of coffee. Dylan
is blown away by the idea.
Speaker 3 (50:11):
Holy fuck the holiest.
Speaker 1 (50:14):
Since the rest of the department is single, this will
be there little secret miss to avoid any possible resentment.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
I hey, for your friends to tune against you after
all you've done for them.
Speaker 1 (50:23):
Hey, he did sacrifice his best belt. In the outer office,
Miss Wong is playing some kind of rudimentary sorting game
on her workstation. Dylan's brow is furrowed as he silently
leaves the office. Mister Miltchik closes his inner door without
a word. Once the door has closed, Miss Wong retrieves
something from the top drawer of her desk. We can't
(50:44):
really see it here, but this is the cure water
toy she plays with pretty regularly. In his office, Seth
is fuming. He keeps watching Hello Miss Kobell animate on
and off his screen. We cut back to the outer
office for a close up of Miss Wong's toy before
Don we get into the behind the scenes details about
mis Wong's toy. I think we need one more wellness
(51:06):
session here, Refiner. Severed will be right back.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
Hello, Refiners, this is your beloved leader Ker Egan. Actually
it's Mark Keller, who plays Ker Egan on Severance. For
the latest Don Stopping the Mdr Rebellion. I like to
check in with Severed, the Ultimate Severance Podcast.
Speaker 1 (51:30):
We're looking at a close up of a tiny carved
Kere encased in water. He's dressed in an old tiny
red and white striped swimsuit. There were alternate designs, like
one of Kre with a mohawk. There was also Kir
with his arm extended statue of liberty style. It was
Ben Stiller who selected this version of Kir as the
one in the game. He loved the old timey look
(51:53):
of it. Plus this figure made sense. It was somebody
who should be in water. This water filled ring toss
game fabricated specifically for the show because they don't make
real ones this big. It's intentionally about the size of
a smartphone as a comment on society's preoccupation with smartphones.
What would a kid do to entertain themselves on the
(52:14):
severed floor Now? Since they can't have a smartphone, they
get a water filled cure game. Artist and sculptor Pinko
Platikonov handles all of the show's sculpted objects. He carved
and painted the cure swimmer by hand. The figure was
then attached to the toy. The rings are the severance
colors red, green, and blue. These rings correspond to the
(52:36):
tempers of woe dread and malice. There aren't no yellow
rings because yellow is the color of frolic. Eliminating Frolic
from her game is symbolic as Wong is being asked
to give up her childish ways. Even though it's a prop,
this game really works. It can be played since this
is the game as Wong is forced to destroy and
(52:57):
celebration of her Wintertide fellowship. They had to make multiples.
There were a dozen of these games created. Ten of
them got smashed bits by the jame bust. Two have
been preserved. I'm kind of hoping they give one to
Mark Geller, after all, that's him in there catching those rings.
We cut back and forth between mis Wong playing her
game and Seth fuming at his computer. Finally, Seth reaches
(53:21):
for the power switch and clicks off the offending animation.
Back int MDR, we see some heavily manicured fingers fumbling
for a Rockers switch. Why it's Helena Egan, an experienced refiner,
fumbling for the on button. This is that's not Helly
Clue number I don't know what are we up to now?
Seven And that's just in this one episode they really
(53:43):
wanted us to catch this deception, but there were so
many people who rejected the idea. This could be an imposter.
Mark smiles at her as he takes his seat, and
the clock over Mark's shoulders says it's about nine forty
six am. With breakroom videos and hallway revelations distracting, it's
taken the Macrodaths some time to get settled in. Okay,
(54:03):
Dylan says, yeah, he's okay, but he's alone. Where's Earth?
There's a pause, Then we hear from off camera right
here IRV is coming through the other door to MDR.
As IRV approaches his workstation, Dylan asks if he's okay.
I'm ok Dylan must have gotten through to him in
the halls. There's a great the bands back together feel
as they all take a seat around the Diamond desk.
(54:26):
Sure IRV is ready to bolt and kill his Inny forever,
and Helly is secretly Helena, and Dylan is hiding the
fact he's going to get to see his Oudy family,
and Mark is considering reintegration so he can find his
dead wife. Even knowing all of these things, it's still
pretty great seeing them together around the Diamond desk. The
(54:46):
tune We're hearing is called God Walked Down by the Allergies.
The Allergies are a Bristol, UK based funk duo. This
tune is from their twenty sixteen album called As We
Do Our Thing two What Somehow Dario forgot his head Cube.
(55:13):
Dylan picks up the car block of wood with Dario's
smiling face peering from it. He looks questioningly at Mark.
Mark just shakes his head. Dylan flips the head cube
and its base into his top drawer. No need to
explain weirdness over. We cut to a close up of
(55:36):
Mark's face as he's getting into refining. The tune is
ramping up. Reverse cut to Mark's screen. This is the
first time we've seen Mark with the file Cold Harbor
open on his terminal. He's currently at sixty seven percent.
This file and Mark's progress on it will dominate a
large part of this season. Needing a cliffhanger, Refiner wanting
(55:59):
something to make your head explode? Oh, Stiller and ericson
have got you covered? We move in closer and closer
on the numbers. Mark bins a batch and it advances
the progress bar another percentage point. He's at sixty eight
and we see the display change. It's still monochromatic, but
the quality is different than the Refiner screens. We can
still see the bins. This is still Cold Harbor. It's
(56:22):
just being monitored somewhere else. They're not showing us the
full screen. At first, we get an eye body temp
is ninety eight point six if you're not in the US.
That's a solid thirty seven celsius. Looks like heart rate
is eighty. Then we get the full screen. Oh wow,
that is definitely miss Casey, right, I mean Gemma. This
(56:44):
is our first hint that whatever Mark's doing is actually
somehow affecting Gemma, who is truly alive somewhere else in
this massive building. The file Cold Harbor is the key
to the point. It will be the name of the
finale episode. There's a zoom in on Jemma's eyes than
a zoom in on Mark size. Throw in a number
(57:04):
screen and we squeeze to black, roll credits and crank
up the tunes. Season two of Severance is off and
running Refiner. I'm very excited that we are backed with
full rewatch episodes. I plan to continue dropping a new
rewatch episode on a regular basis, but these early epps
are so loaded with info it might be every other
