Tone Motivates (00:00):
What's up, beautiful people?
It's the one and only ToneMotivates.
Back with another episode ofShades of Tone, and today I
wanted to discuss theintersection of self-discovery
and authentic living.
Now I saw a really dope quoteby Carl Jung and it basically

(00:21):
says the privilege of a lifetimeis to become who you truly are.
And that went so so well withthe topic today, so let's get
into it.
What does it mean to truly liveauthentically?
So I remember being in a roomfull of people at a corporate

(00:42):
event, smiling, nodding alongand doing everything I thought I
should do to fit in.
But deep down, I felt like Iwasn't really being myself and
it hit me.
Was I living authentically orwas I just going through the
motions, trying to be whatothers expected?
I knew I'm a generally sociableperson, but I started thinking
of all the things I enjoyed inmy personal life that may be

(01:05):
frowned upon and it hit me.
I was trying to be what othersexpected.
This episode is all aboutexploring the intersection of
self-discovery and authenticliving.
We'll dive into what it meansto find yourself and how living
true to who you are can bringmore fulfillment and peace into
your life.
Why this topic matters, you ask.
Well, in a world full ofexpectations from society,

(01:28):
family and even ourselves, finding out who we truly are and
living authentically can feellike a challenge, but it's also
one of the most rewardingjourneys we can take.
So what is self-discovery?
Self-discovery is about peelingback the layers of who you
think you should be and gettingto the core of who you truly are
.
It's about understanding yourvalues, passions, fears and

(01:51):
desires.
When was the last time youasked yourself who am I really?
What do I want from life?
It's easy to get caught up inthe daily grind without checking
in on yourself, grind withoutchecking in on yourself.
A common myth aboutself-discovery is that a lot of
people think self-discovery is aone-time event, like a sudden

(02:12):
aha moment.
But in reality it's a lifelongprocess.
You're always evolving, andthat's okay.
The more you grow, the more youdiscover about yourself.
It's basically like playing aNintendo game, or, like I like
to call it, sonic the Hedgehog.
You beat the first level andRobotnik's not in that level.
But as soon as you get to thesecond level, robotnik's there

(02:32):
and you have to beat him inorder to level up.
And that's the same thing withlife Soon, as you pass one phase
, you have another one to gothrough and you're going to keep
doing that until the day thatwe die.
And even at that point we'restill leveling up and we're
still phasing.
And I can give you another story.
I thought I wanted to be a partof corporate America but I

(02:54):
noticed with more responsibilitycame more of a spotlight that I
didn't really want.
I felt like I was living twolives and I went years
downplaying what made me trulyhappy, doing what I thought was
expected of me as a mother, oldest daughter and a pillar in
my immediate environment.
Once I started bumping into oldfriends and feeling nostalgia

(03:15):
of the memories we talked about,I started to realize a part of
me had laid dormant for at leasta decade.
It was then I began to uncovermy true self and Tone Motivates
was unleashed.
Let's chat about the barriers ofauthentic living the pressure
to conform.
One of the biggest challengesto living authentically is the

(03:38):
pressure to conform to otherpeople's expectations, whether
it's from family, friends orsociety.
We're often taught to be whatothers want us to be instead of
being ourselves.
On the opposite end of mycorporate life, I consistently
put myself in danger, growing upbeing extreme and defiant.

(03:59):
It was plenty of times Ishouldn't have made it home by
being with the wrong crowds orin the wrong places, knowing it
didn't sit right with me.
I used to say yes to things Ididn't really want to do because
I thought that's what wasexpected of me, but each time I
did I felt a little further awayfrom who I truly was.
Next is the fear of rejection.

(04:19):
Another barrier is the fear ofrejection.
We're afraid that if we showour true selves, people might
not accept us or like us.
But here's the thing the peoplewho are meant to be in our life
will accept you for who youreally are.
Think about where in theirlives they might be holding back
.
Is there an area of your lifewhere you're afraid to fully be

(04:40):
yourself?
What would it look like to letgo of that fear and step into
your true self?
The link between self-discoveryand authenticity.
Once you start discovering whoyou truly are, it becomes easier
to live authentically.
When you understand your values, passions and purpose, you can

(05:01):
make choices that align withyour true self.
Living authentically meansliving in alignment with your
core values and beliefs.
It's about making decisionsthat feel right in your gut,
even if they go against whatothers expect.
I climbed the ladder of acompany for 10 years and walked
away from it in 2023.
I felt like I wasn't able to betruly myself because of the

(05:25):
policies and procedures I wastied to being a part of their
company.
I remember deciding to pursue apassion that didn't make sense
to others, but it made perfectsense to me.
That was one of the first timesI truly felt aligned with who I
was.
I want you to reflect on onetime or how often you make
choices that align with yourauthentic self.

(05:47):
When was the last time you madea decision that felt 100% true
to you, without worrying aboutwhat others thought?
Some practical steps forself-discovery.
Step one reflect on your values.
Start by reflecting on yourcore values.
What's most important to you?
Is it honesty, creativity,freedom, kindness?

(06:09):
Knowing your values helps youmake decisions that feel true to
who you are.
Step two explore your passions.
What lights you up?
What activities make you losetrack of time?
Exploring your passions is akey part of self-discovery
because it points to what trulymatters to you.
Step three embrace solitude.

(06:32):
Sometimes, the best way todiscover who you are is to spend
time alone.
Solitude gives you the space toreflect without the influence
of others.
Take a walk, journal, meditatewhatever helps you tune into
yourself.
Step four question your beliefs.
Ask yourself do I believe thisbecause it's true for me or

(06:56):
because someone else told me itshould be true?
Self-discovery often involvesunlearning beliefs that don't
serve us.
I invite you to try to applyone of these this week.
Choose one of these stepsReflect on your values, explore
a passion or spend some time insolitude and notice what you

(07:17):
discover about yourself.
Let's chat about the rewards ofauthentic living.
Firstly, you have morefulfillment.
You have more fulfillment.
When you live authentically.
Life feels more fulfilling.

mold that doesn't suit you.

true self.
Deeper Connections Authenticliving also leads to deeper,
more meaningful relationships.

love and accept you for who youare, not for who you pretend to
be.
Once I left corporate America, Ihad the time and space to

(08:00):
concentrate on my endeavors.
I dabbled in sound and actingmodeling, voiceovers, helping
people with business startups.
I was featured in magazines, was offered all kinds of
partnerships in addition tobeing a writer, mindset and
wellness coach, host, interviewer and rotating co-host
on podcasts, before starting myown.

(08:22):
more at peace, but I alsonoticed that the relationships
in my life became more genuineand supportive.

please.

When you're faced with adecision, tune into how it feels
in your body.
Does it feel light and exciting, or heavy and constricting?

.
